The Port of Thunder Bay is located at the head of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway system and at the heart of the North America Continent. Nestled on the shores of Lake Superior, the city is the largest community on the lake and is recognized as one of Canada’s great outdoor cities and a world class tourism destination. Experience the harmony of a city rich in wide-open green spaces, parks and wilderness – yet a major centre for visual and performing arts, culture and entertaining.
Superior by Nature
Thunder Bay is the home to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park , one of Canada’s great natural wonders. Passive and active outdoor enthusiasts can explore the biological diversity of this great park that protects the harbour. The City is a gateway to some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness and only several kilometres from the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area , the world’s largest freshwater conservation reserve.
Within the city limits are over 150 developed parks, 34 km of recreational trails, walkways and shoreline waiting to be explored. The city’s southern landscape is dominated by the towering 482 m Mount McKay , known in Ojibway as Thunder Mountain. Visitors can trek the skyline walkway with a magnificent view of the city and harbour. Kakabeka Falls , dubbed Niagara of the North, is a majestic 40 m high waterfall and steep, rock-walled river canyon. Eagle Canyon offers Canada’s longest suspension bridge and zip line, offering unparalleled views and thrills.
Exploration Heritage
When the North West Company built Fort William in 1798, it quickly became a lively community of Scottish traders, French voyageurs and Native trappers. Today, a colourful cast of authentically costumed characters recreates life from that era at Fort William Historical Park – the world’s largest recreated fur trading post and a Top-10 Canadian attraction. Anishnawbae Keeshigun, a traditional pow-wow held annually at Fort William Historical Park offers colourful glimpses of our Native culture.
As the regional economy evolved, immigrants from around the globe were drawn here by new industries, but the forest industry was a special attraction for the Finns. Even today, Thunder Bay boasts one of the largest settlements of Finnish people outside Finland. The ethnic diversity of our community is evident in the omnipresent saunas and the unique shops throughout the community.
Enjoy sensational shopping and delectable dining situated amongst beautiful views and unique and friendly neighbourhoods. A stroll through the various business districts will give you a sample of the city’s many unique retail and culinary offerings. Visit one of the many galleries and craft studios or sample unique culinary creations, including fresh local fish and Thunder Oak Gouda cheese, one of Canada’s finest.
Take a walk through the Past at Founders’ Pioneer Village . An early 1900s heritage village has been recreated with intriguing artefacts on display throughout the site. Hillcrest Park offers a panoramic view of the harbour and the famous Sleeping Giant. The Thunder Bay Art Gallery houses a significant permanent collection of First Nations art that promises to be the highlight of your visit. Additionally, exhibitions by regional, national and international artists offer something for everyone. The Centennial Botanical Conservatory offers a vast glass and concrete structure that houses displays of tropical plants, desert cacti and seasonal flower arrangements. Gateway Casino Thunder Bay, just steps from Marina Park offers visitors a chance to win at one of its many card tables and over 450 slots.
The city is a gateway to Lake Superior expedition cruising. The Pool 6 deep water 268 m (880 ft) long pier, coupled with the Thunder Bay International Airport’s exceptional airlift capacity through Air Canada, Bearskin, Westjet, Northwest, Porter and Wasaya Airlines, make the city an ideal option for cruise departures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Parking and pre-tour tips.
Parking and Pre-Tour Tips for Your Sail Superior Experience:
1. Parking Locations: Avoid parking at the pier ends where “Authorised Boater Parking Only” signs are placed; those spots are for boat owners. Instead, consider parking options like:
- Across from the skate park
- Near Bight Restaurant
- Around the Delta hotel area
- In the boat launch area, right then left first exit in the Pearl St roundabout.
2. Arrival Time: Arrive and get ready to board 10 minutes before your scheduled tour time.
3. Be Prepared: We recommend using the restroom before your charter. Restrooms are located in the water park building. Note that they might not be generally open before 12 pm.
By following these tips, you’ll have a smooth and enjoyable start to your sailing tour with Sail Superior.
What to Wear for a 90-Minute Sailing Tour with Sail Superior
What to Wear for a 90-Minute Sailing Tour with Sail Superior:
1. Sunglasses & Hat: Wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun’s glare off the water.
2. Non-Slip Shoes: Put on comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction to stay steady on the boat’s deck.
3. Windbreaker: Bring a light windbreaker or jacket. Even if it’s warm, the wind can make it feel cooler on the water.
Remember, the weather can change fast, so these essentials will keep you comfortable during your short sailing tour with Sail Superior.
On the Catamaran, no heeled shoes, shoes that leave marks. You will be asked to remove inappropriate footwear before boarding. If in doubt bring some soft Croc type shoes, clean white soled runners. Going barefoot is fine but can be chilly.
On the Sailboat, most shoes except heeled shoes are ok.
On the Zodiac, runners/ hiking shoes and most anything except heels. You may be going ashore, its good to have trail shoes.
Drinking alcohol on our boats
ALCOHOL & DRINKING on a vessel. Our monohull Frodo is licensed, and as such we are bound by the law in regards to monitoring your intake and service. If you are coming from a pre drinking function and are intoxicated you will not be allowed to board, this only relates to those in your party that are visibly intoxicated and not the entire group. We will deny service on board to anyone who is becoming intoxicated. We will insure that you have a designated DD or someone who is picking you up afterwards. It is our Duty to keep you safe. If your tour is cancelled due to any conflict with the above laws and policies you will not receive a refund or credit for your tour. Boating is a great place to have a drink, it is a dangerous place to be intoxicated. If you think you or your party will drink excessively we kindly ask you not to book a tour with us.
Can We Bring Our Own Alcohol?
Since our boats are fully liquor licensed, personal alcohol is not allowed. There is a selection of wines, local craft beers, and ciders onboard. Should you desire something specific, simply let our captains know and we’ll do our best to arrange for it to be on the tour (at additional cost). All tours will be outfitted with servers as well as customized plans for cash and open bar services.
Catamaran tours: This is boat is not licensed and is a bareboat charter. Consumption of alcohol is only legal while the boat is at the dock or at anchor. Guests may bring their own alcohol. Strong spirits and red wine is not allowed. Remember the crew are there to keep you safe. If you think you or any of your party intends to drink to excess we kindly ask you to not book a tour with us.
Boating is a great place to have a drink or two; it is an extremely dangerous place to be intoxicated.
The Superior Rocket is not licensed and no alcohol will be permitted.
Are There Age Restrictions?
Sailing charters are an adventure for all; from the young to the young at heart. For anyone under 2 years of age we ask that you bring a PFD (personal flotation device) along and know that they’ll be seated with you for the duration of the tour. If you don’t have one, we will supply one upon arrival. Anyone 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult and will be supplied with a sanitized PFD upon arrival.
With private Zodiac tours, similar rules apply. Everyone is welcome with special considerations taken by the crew to maintain a safe, comfortable and exciting environment. Those under 2 will be asked to come with a properly fitted PFD while the rest of the group will be supplied with one upon arrival. The route and intensity of the ride will remain at the Captain’s discretion to ensure safety for all.
On mixed or non private Zodiac tours we do limit the age and size of children, and may even recommend some adults take a pass. This is because the ride is advertised as a thrill speed ride and we will be heading out into the lake to meet any conditions that arise. Customers are expecting this and we cannot safety take small children into these conditions.
*Zodiac trips may not be suitable for pregnant women or those with serious neck or back pain. Let us know at the time of booking and we’ll help you find the perfect tour to experience this great lake! Trips up the Kaministiqua river are generally very relaxed and can be enjoyed by everyone.
What Happens If It Rains?
Part of the wonder of the Lake is its ever changing conditions; the weather is no exception. Unless there is substantial thunder and lightning just prior to the tour and a ‘Small Craft Advisory’ issued by Environment Canada, everything will remain as scheduled. Be sure to monitor the weather prior to the tour and bring appropriate attire to stay as comfortable as possible. Our captains have the final say and will reach out to you in the case of a postponed tour.
If it starts to rain mid tour, we have covered spaces to shelter you, come in and let the captain and crew brave the weather. Some of the best photographs and images are when the weather puts on a show.
Can I Smoke and/or Participate in Recreational Drugs on Tour?
To maintain the safety and awareness of everyone onboard, no smoking/vaping or recreational drug use of any kind is permitted when on the vessels, or on any of the adjacent docks or waiting areas. Failure to follow this rule will cause the immediate end of your tour and return to the dock. Any fares will be forfeit.

Discover Duluth, Minnesota
The Sioux and Chippewa were the first to settle in the scenic hills that overlook the far western shores of Lake Superior. By the mid 1600’s, it was a fur trading outpost that was then claimed for France by Daniel Greysolon Sieur du Lhut, the French soldier and explorer for whom the city is now named. Stepping off ship today, your guided exploration begins with the Aerial Lift Bridge which stands guard over the harbor and then continues along the North Shore Scenic Driver, from where you’ll have commanding views over the city and its picturesque setting on Lake Superior. You’ll ascend to Hawk Ridge to learn about the unique natural phenomenon that occurs here annually as raptors migrating from the Arctic crest the ridge and seemingly come to a halt in mid-air as they encounter the vast expanse of Lake Superior below. Back in town, enjoy a guided walk along the waterfront to Leif Erikson Park to see an amazing replica of a Viking ship and then tour the Duluth Depot, which houses the unique collection of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore more of Duluth’s vibrant waterfront at your own pace. Meals B+L+D
The Keweenaw Waterway + Houghton
Comprised of natural lakes and waterways as well as artificial canals that were dredged in the 1860’s, the Keweenaw Waterway traverses the Keweenaw Peninsula and provides a shortcut for freighters hauling ore from the rich copper mines of the Peninsula to larger cities along Lake Superior. Today you’ll off ship in the village of Houghton, situated midway through the Keweenaw Waterway, for a tour of the famous Quincy Copper Mine. The mine operated for nearly a century, right up through World War II, and offers the rare chance for visitors to actually enter the mine itself! After lunch, you’ll visit the Houghton Lake Historic Village to see a restored vintage homestead and tour the Fireman’s Memorial Museum. Meals B+L+D
Marquette, Michigan
Set on the northern shores of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the lands around Marquette were well known by French missionaries as far back as the 1600’s and in later centuries by intrepid fur trappers. With the discovery of iron deposits in the mid-19 th century, the town of Marquette began to grow and prosper and by the late 1800’s steamships were also bringing summer visitors to fill the city’s hotels and resorts. Stepping ashore today in this historic town, your sightseeing will include the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and the still-operational Famous Eagle Mine site. At the Baumer Heritage Center, informative and entertaining exhibits will offer further insight into Marquette’s development from furs and mining to modern-day tourism. Meals B+L+D
Through the Soo Locks into Lake Huron
A delightful day of cruising is enriched by engaging talks with our onboard Great Lakes experts. Elegant dining in two distinctive venues, our ship’s Open Bar with house wine, spirits and beer, and convivial conversation with your fellow travelers add to the experience. Today our ship will transit through the historic Soo Locks, where freighters, barges and tugboats traverse the 21-foot drop of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The first lock here was built in 1855 and the canal was navigated by 27 vessels during its first year of operation. Today, more than 10,000 ships hauling 86 million tons of cargo pass through these historic parallel locks each year, even though they’re closed during the winter when ice shuts down shipping on the upper Great Lakes! As we navigate from Lake Superior downward through the locks, our experts will be on-hand to offer colorful historical insights. Once we reach Lake Superior, we’ll continue our voyage toward Mackinac Island. Meals B+L+D
Mackinac Island
This morning, the mv Victory II will dock in St. Ignace where you’ll board the Star Line Ferry to Mackinac Island. From the Mackinac waterfront, a horse-drawn carriage tour is a great way to experience the Victoria-era ambience of this National Historic Landmark. Learn about the island’s history and see turn-of-the-century homes built by early captains of American industry. Then hop off at the Grand Hotel and take in the views from its famous verandah, the longest in the world! In the elegant main dining room, you’ll enjoy the hotel’s lavish Grand Buffet Luncheon. Also today, you’ll tour Fort Mackinac - set high on a bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. Built by the British in 1780, taken by the Americans in 1796, and reclaimed by the British at the start of the War of 1812, your guided visit offers rich insight into colorful chapters of American history. Then return to the waterfront where the ferry will take you back to St. Ignace to reboard the mv Victory II . Meals B+L+D
Little Current on Manitoulin Island
After breakfast, you’ll step ashore in Little Current, Ontario. This charming town is the gateway to Manitoulin, the largest freshwater island in the world. Learn about the island’s nautical heritage and its natural history as you make the scenic 30-minute drive to the Immaculate Conception Church. With a unique in-the-round architectural style that evokes a teepee and the circle of life, this church is the spiritual focal point of the local community and brings together the beliefs and customs of the native Ojibwe culture and the Catholic Church. Later at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, you’ll enjoy a guided tour through the art galleries and enlightening state-of-the-art exhibits of this heritage museum. If you wish, you can browse in the Foundation’s artisan shop and participate in a smudging ceremony, an ancient purifying ritual that uses the smoke from cedar, sage, sweet grass and other plants that are regarded for their healing powers. A narrated drum and dance performance offers further insight into Ojibwe cultural traditions. We’ll return to the mv Victory II for lunch. With insights from an expert local resident, this guided cruise through Georgian Bay’s 30,000 Islands region promises an experience that is both enlightening and fun. Travelers with a taste for even greater excitement can join an available Flightseeing Adventure in modern 3-passenger aircrafts that will take you soaring above the blue waters, rugged shores and forests of the 30,000 Islands.
