Cruises for 18-Year-olds (With or Without Parents) 2024

As you may already know, many cruise lines stipulate that you must be 21 years or older to travel alone on a cruise ship.

Therefore, 18-20-year-olds can only go on a cruise with another adult aged over 21. Most often, this will be a parent or guardian.

However, this can be a tricky age because those over 17 are deemed too old for organized onboard teen activities, and those under 21 are too young to drink and enjoy the bars and nightclubs to the max.

Young Woman Happy To Be Cruising Without Parents

It’s well worth looking into which cruise lines provide the best all-round activities and facilities to keep yourself or your 18-20 years sons and daughters entertained, even if they do have to go with parents.

We have also researched all the cruise lines on which you can travel solo at 18 years or with friends under 21.

Rest assured there are plenty of great options for the 18 to 20 age range.

Best Cruise for 18-Year-Olds

As a parent of an 18-year-old myself, it’s been worthwhile having a fresh look at the best options to keep all family members happy and entertained.

The best cruise lines for 18 to 20 years olds have a wide range of activities and lots of them.

So no matter their interests, there will be something for them to do.  Even if it’s something new they have never tried before.

Many 18 to 20 years olds will enjoy the typical onboard activities, including:

  • Deck parties
  • Dance ClassesLounging in and around the pools
  • Enjoying the water parks
  • Entertainment shows (including all the adults-only shows)
  • Playin ball games like basketball, tennis, golf
  • Fitness Centers
  • Spa treatments

Hopefully, the roundups below for the best cruise lines for 18-year-olds will help narrow your search.

You just then need to focus on the ideal ship with the activities you know most appeal to the 18-20 age groups.

Royal Caribbean for 18 to 20-year-olds

Royal Caribbean ships are some of the largest in the world, but even the smaller (but still large) ones are full of activities ideal for 18 to 20-year-olds.

Example activities on RCL include :

  • Bumper Cars
  • Ice Skating
  • Indoor Sky diving
  • Rock climbing Walls
  • Surf simulators

Note: Not every activity listed above is on every ship in the fleet.

Water Features

Royal Caribbean ships have great water features on their cruises, but one that stands out, in particular, is the Perfect Storm, a megaplex of slides like no other, which is on about five of their ships.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas Top Deck

Private Island

A stop-off at Royal Caribbean’s private island CocoCay will be a day to remember for any age, especially 18 to 20 years old.

CocoCay offers another range of activities and pools, or you just relax on the beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line for 18 to 20 years olds

Norwegian Cruises have a range of sports activities onboard that are very popular with 18 to 20 years olds.

Example activities on NCL include:

  • Climbing Wall
  • Go Karting track
  • Racing Simulators
  • Rope courses
  • Virtual Reality

Dressing up for a theme can be lots of fun, especially when combined with great music.

Themed party nights popular with young adults on NCL include:

  • White Hot Party (Glow Party on some ships)

Some NCL ships have awesome Aqua Parks with multiple pools, hot tubs, and some multi-level water slides, including one called Free Fall, which is claimed to be one of the fastest water slides on the seas.

Carnival Cruise Activities For 18-Year-Olds

Carnival Cruise brands itself as the “fun ship,” and that includes fun for 18 to 20-year-olds.

Carnival cruises are full of activities, examples including:

  • Fitness Machines
  • Mini Bowling
  • Rope Courses
  • Video Games

Carnival cruises tend to have great water play features, including at least one water slide.

If you’re single, Carnival is one of our top picks for 18 to 20-something singles cruises .

Disney Cruise Line for 18 to 20-year-olds

Everyone loves Disney or something Disney-related, right?

Whether it’s still princesses or Marvel and Star Wars, there’s so much to entertain the 18 to 20 age range, even if its primarily targeted at children and families as a whole.

Bearing that in mind, if you’re thinking of taking an 18, 19 or 20 year old, probably best to check with them first.  It’s an age where they feel they might have outgrown Disney for now.

Disney Cruise line has a special meet-up for 18 to 20 years olds, called the “ 1820 Society ”.  This is to get as many in this age range together, break the ice and get them socializing and having fun as soon as possible.

The first meet-up is in the Cove Cafe, an adults-only coffee shop.

If you are or have a child in this age range, it’s worth making an extra effort to get them to go to the first meet-up, even if a little apprehensive, as the Disney crew will soon make them feel at ease.

If the club is successful, which is generally is, you might hardly see your 18-year-old for the rest of the vacation. They’ll be off having fun.

All 1820 Society arranged activities are free.

You can find more information about the Disney 1820 Society by DCLfan here .

What to Look For – For Good 18 to 20 year olds Cruise

Bars and nightclubs.

While they may not be able to drink alcohol until they are 21 (unless in international waters ), most cruise lines let 18-20 years into the nightclubs and surrounding bars.

If they are new to bars and nightclubs, they offer an enjoyable enough experience without alcohol.

So whether it’s the disco or the Karaoke bar, there should be options for them to hang up and have fun.

Teenagers chatting at cruise ship bar

An ideal cruise ship for some 18 to 20 years old is one with many different sports activities.

The more choice, the better, so they can participate in their favorite sports, whether it’s time on the basketball court or finding something new to try, like golf or rock climbing.

Some cruise ships will also run tournaments and competitions.  Ideal for those with a competitive streak.

Adult Only Time

Like some older adults, even younger adults 18 to 20 want the option to get away from younger kids running around screaming (in fun).

The above-listed cruise lines, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, and  Disney, have spaces and decks restricted to 18s and over.

This also includes going to adults-only live shows, a comedy which is top-quality entertainment they can enjoy.

Depending on your views on gambling, 18-year-olds can test out the casinos and poker rooms onboard the ships. (Alaska sailings a minimum of 21 years of age).

Playing the casino responsibly or getting involved at the poker tables can be great fun.

(Assuming always you’re encouraging responsible gambling).

Bring a Friend

If your 18 to 20-year-old is an only child or there’s a big age difference between siblings, consider letting them bring a friend to hang out with.

True, you might see less of them as a family overall, but that will only be because they are off enjoying themselves.

Choose Larger Ships

When it comes to choosing a specific ship from a cruise line with 18 to 20-year-olds in mind, the large the ship, the more activities you can expect to have onboard.

Also, the newer or recently refurbed ships in the fleet of the cruise lines I’ve highlighted tend to be more suited to younger adults.

Mixer Events Specifically for 18-20 years olds

Whatever cruise ship you go on, see if the cruise line has any ice-breaker events specifically for 18-20 years olds.

Ice-breakers are a great way to get them mixing and socializing as soon as possible, and they can discover the ship’s activities together and no doubt end up enjoying it all more together.

Disney Cruise Line: Offers the 1820 Society, as we covered above.

Other 18 to 20-Year-old Cruise Lines Activities

Some of the other cruise lines, which may not be as all-around fun and ideal as are best picks, also cater directly to the 18-20-year-old range in some ways.

Celebrity Cruises – Offers a  “Gen NXT” Meeting Hotspot for ages 18 – 21 to get to know each other a bit better from the first night.

Cruises For 18-Year-Olds Without Parents

The vast majority of cruise lines require 18 years olds to be traveling with an adult over the age of 21.

However, if traveling at 18 and as well as 19 and 20 is your goal, whether traveling solo or with friends, we have found the best options for you.

What Cruise Can You go on Alone at 18

We have found five cruise lines that allow 18-year-olds to travel alone or with friends under 21.

P&O for 18-year-olds

If you are in the UK, P&O cruises are a particularly good option for 18- to 20-year-olds.

They have a wide range of sports options, including

With some great entertainment on top.

Also good for booking 3 to 5-night Sea Breaks getaways in and around Australia.

The 6 best cruise lines for young adults

Megan duBois

Travelers between the ages of 18 and 25 often get overlooked on cruises. They are too old for the teen clubs, even if they are still in high school at 18, but may be too young to drink at the onboard bars. Many cruise lines forget that 20-somethings still want to meet their onboard peers in group settings arranged by the cruise line — especially if they're traveling with older family members with different vacation interests.

The best cruise lines for young adults often have meetups that allow them to make friends quickly on the first night; have a cool, laid-back vibe in adults-only areas that they can finally access after graduating from the kids clubs; and have some sense of adventure built into the itinerary.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Young adult cruisers can find a party around every corner on Carnival Cruise Line or adventures off the ship with Royal Caribbean International. Even solo cruisers will find cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line that are designed just for them, with communal spaces ideal for making friends.

Here, we list the six best cruise lines for young adults ages 18 to 25. Plus, we outline a few key things you should know when picking a cruise line, especially if you are younger than 21 (or traveling with someone who is).

3 things young adult cruisers need to know

Booking restrictions.

Some cruise lines do have restrictions for travelers looking to book a sailing if they are younger than 21. For instance, Royal Caribbean sets the minimum age to sail unaccompanied by an adult on cruises from North America at 21. (You only need to be 18 years old to sail from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.)

Before booking with any cruise line, you'll want to check the minimum age requirement of the cruise line to be sure you or someone in your group meets the requirements.

Drinking age on cruises

On most sailings from the U.S., guests must be at least 21 years old to drink alcohol on the ship. One exception to this rule is Margaritaville at Sea , which allows guests who are 18 to drink once the ship is in international waters or on Grand Bahama Island.

If you're sailing from a country that allows legal drinking at 18, as many European countries do, check the drinking policy for those who are younger than 21 for that particular sailing or cruise line before booking. For example, Disney Cruise Line allows 18- to 20-year-olds to consume alcohol on closed-loop sailings departing from any European country. Parents or guardians just need to sign a consent form.

Be warned, though, that consuming or even buying alcohol for those younger than 21 is a serious offense that can lead to forced debarkation on sailings that say the age for drinking is 21 and older.

Cruise line alcohol policies

Cruise lines generally frown on bringing your own alcohol on board, limiting bottles and charging corkage fees. Check your specific cruise line's policies because they are all different.

For example, Disney Cruise Line allows those who are at least 21 to bring two bottles of wine or six beers onto the ship with them in a carry-on bag on embarkation day and again at each port of call. Carnival Cruise Line allows cruisers 21 and older to bring one bottle of unopened wine per person on board in their carry-on luggage on embarkation day only.

If you decide to try to sneak on more alcohol than allowed , security can confiscate and discard it. Most cruise lines will open bottles of water, mouthwash and other clear liquids to confirm it's not contraband alcohol.

OK, enough of the rules and regulations. Here are our favorite cruise lines for young adults.

Best cruise line for a party: Carnival Cruise Line

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its lively atmosphere and party vibes. Sailings on Carnival are among the most affordable, which can benefit young adults looking for a fun vacation on a budget.

Along with fun fast-casual dining spots from celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O'Neal, Carnival's so-called "Fun Ships" have an abundance of shows, trivia challenges and outdoor activities that appeal to younger cruisers. On Carnival ships, those 18 and older can gamble in the onboard casino but cannot order drinks at the many themed bars unless they're at least 21 years old.

Carnival doesn't typically offer planned events for cruisers ages 18 to 25. Travelers looking to meet similarly aged travelers can connect with shipmates on Facebook groups dedicated to their sailing and arrange an unofficial meetup with other young adults on board. Active shore excursions, the fitness center and the hot tub on the adults-only sun deck are great places to look for peers during a cruise.

Best cruise line for young adult meetups: Disney Cruise Line

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Even though Disney Cruise Line is known as the family cruise line, young adults may be on board because they have younger siblings or their family enjoys visiting Disney parks. Cruisers who have aged out of Vibe, the teen club for 14- to 17-year-olds, will find their own "secret" onboard club known as the 1820 Society.

Cruisers ages 18 to 20 who want to participate in the planned activities can see all the available happenings on the Disney Cruise Line app once they're on the ship. Young adults should attend the first meetup, which is where introductions and icebreaker games happen. Throughout the cruise and even on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, meetups and activities are scheduled for the age group.

Another plus for young adults is that Disney only requires guests to be 18 years old to sail unaccompanied. That means you and your friends don't need a parent chaperone for a weekend cruise filled with late-night dance parties in the District and brunch at the adults-only Palo restaurant .

Best cruise line for young foodies: Celebrity Cruises

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Young adult cruisers who get excited about international cuisine and craft cocktails will enjoy Celebrity Cruises , especially its newest Edge-class ships. The line is a good choice for multigenerational trips, especially as its fares might be beyond a 20-something's budget.

Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond and the upcoming Ascent are filled with hip venues, such as Craft Social with its dozens of boutique beers and Eden with its innovative, nature-themed cocktails. If you want to feel the ocean breeze on your face while sipping a martini, head to the Rooftop Garden, where greenery, plush loungers and ocean views will keep you coming back throughout your cruise.

Dining at the many onboard restaurants is also a treat, with venues specializing in sushi, backyard barbecue, French bistro classics and handmade Italian pasta. If your budget doesn't allow for specialty dining, you won't get menu fatigue with four main dining rooms included in the fare. Each restaurant is themed around a different country's cuisine, including Greek, French, Italian and new American.

Best cruise line for quick sailings: Royal Caribbean

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Young adults may struggle to take time off from work or school to do a weeklong cruise. With Royal Caribbean , travelers in their late teens and 20s can take part in two- to five-night sailings from the U.S. or Europe that have affordable rates. Even better, some of the line's largest and attraction-laden ships sail these shorter itineraries, so you won't have a chance to be bored.

Cruises from Florida often go to Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , which adds even more value to the cruise by adding a hassle-free beach day into the destination mix. On the island, lunch is free and you can use your shipboard beverage package to cover your drinks. Plus, the inviting pool and many beaches are great places to hang out and enjoy the water. You must pay extra to ride CocoCay's many waterslides, zip line or tethered hot air balloon.

On board the ships, young adults can meet others at the sports court for a pickup game of basketball or pickleball. The nightclubs and lounges are fun spots to dance and sing with new friends. The minimum age to sail without an older adult in the cabin for cruises departing from North America is 21.

Best cruise line for an adults-only atmosphere: Virgin Voyages

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Young adults looking for a kid-free vacation should check out Virgin Voyages , an adults-only cruise line where the minimum age to book is 18. Gratuities, Wi-Fi and sassy group workouts are included in the fare. Each of the three (soon to be four) ships have many restaurants, such as Pink Agave for Mexican and Gunbae for Korean barbecue, all of which are fee-free.

At sea, guests ages 18 and older can enjoy an alcoholic beverage, but while docked in any U.S. port, the minimum drinking age on board is 21.

One of the most exciting moments of every Virgin Voyages sailing is Scarlet Night, when the entire ship is decked out in red thanks to added red lights and red crew outfits. Guests are encouraged to don their crimson best and attend a late-night dance party on the pool deck.

Adventurous passengers can get matching ink with their besties at the onboard tattoo shop or attend a risque show at night. This is definitely a cruise to take with your partner or peers, not your parents.

Best cruise line for young adults traveling solo: Norwegian Cruise Line

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Solo travelers are often overlooked and, frankly, outpriced on many cruises. With single supplement charges, solo cruisers pay the same total price for a room as two people sharing a cabin.

Norwegian Cruise Line changed the game with its Studio cabins. These 100-square-foot inside rooms are designed for one, so travelers won't be paying extra. Studio guests also get access to the Studio Lounge, a communal gathering space with big-screen TVs, drinks and snacks. Not all NCL ships offer solo cabins ; studios are available on multiple ships, including Norwegian Escape, Epic, Encore, the new Norwegian Prima and the upcoming Norwegian Viva.

On board, cruisers will find plenty of fast-casual and table-service dining options, including one of our favorite food halls at sea, Indulge Food Hall on Norwegian Prima and Viva. Active young adults will enjoy the go-kart tracks , virtual reality game rooms, waterslides and lively dance clubs found on many of Norwegian's newest ships. If you prefer to relax with a book and enjoy the ocean breeze, you can do that, too.

Bottom line

Whether on a family trip with younger siblings or older parents, a party cruise with friends or a relaxing escape with your significant other, young adults can find ships that speak their language. We recommend these six lines for 18- to 25-year-olds, but even on other ships, a good attitude and an adventurous spirit will go a long way toward making a trip you didn't choose extra fun. Young adults can find plenty that appeals to them on most cruises — with or without mom and dad.

As an 18-year-old, you may have trouble meeting passengers your age while cruising during the off-season. However, if you cruise during the holidays or over the summer, several 18-25 year olds will likely be onboard.

As an 18-year-old, you won’t be able to cruise on Princess alone. However, you can cruise on Princess if someone above the age of 21 accompanies you.

Overall, Princess is a great cruise line for someone looking for a laid-back and enjoyable experience.

What Is it Like to Cruise as an 18 Year Old?

As someone in my early twenties, it hasn’t been too long since I’ve cruised as an 18-year-old. Whether it’s your first cruise or your first cruise as an adult, cruising is a fun experience and a great way to travel.

Here is my firsthand experience of cruising as an 18-year-old:

Meeting New People

As an 18-year-old, you can no longer go to the teen club. This can be difficult for teenage cruisers who spent years hanging out in the kid’s and teen club on cruise ships.

This means that you’ll have to make an effort to meet people by going to bars and clubs, participating in activities, and talking to other passengers on the lido deck .

Making friends on a cruise isn’t very hard as a young adult. However, you must step out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to strangers.

Drinking and Gambling

Since most cruise lines require guests to be 21 years old to drink, you cannot consume alcoholic beverages. However, you can still have a good time without drinking on a cruise ship.

In fact, I went on many cruises before the age of 21, where I had fun without consuming alcohol. You can still enter the clubs, bars, and casinos and participate in the nightlife.

If you’re into gambling, you can go to the casino. The casino is quite busy in the evenings, and it’s a good place to meet new people.

Choosing a Cruise Line

When it comes to a cruise vacation, choosing the right cruise line can make or break your trip. It’s important to research the cruise line in advance and to choose something that fits your budget and style of travel.

Check out Virgin Voyages, NCL, and Carnival if you want a fun party ship. These cruises tend to attract younger cruisers, and they are tons of fun!

Royal Caribbean and MSC are perfect for you if you’re looking for a cruise line with a balance of fun activities, good nightlife, and relaxing areas. These cruise lines attract a mix of families and older cruisers who are young at heart!

Princess and Celebrity are great choices if you’re looking for a relaxing, upscale cruise experience. These cruise lines offer great service, tasty food, and have many areas to sit back, relax, and recharge.

Final Thoughts On The Best Cruises For 18 Year Olds

Well, there it is, everything you need to know about cruising as an 18-year-old!

Cruising as an 18-year-old may seem intimidating. However, it isn’t as challenging as it may seem.

A cruise is one of the best options if you’re an 18-year-old who wants to travel and explore new places. Instead of organizing a big trip, you can pay for a cruise, and most of the planning is done for you.

On a cruise, even if you’re cruising solo , you will always have food and a place to sleep, and you can book excursions through the cruise line. This makes cruising is a stress-free style of travel.

The great thing about cruising is that meeting new people is easy because everyone is on vacation. If you choose the right cruise, you will meet many people your age and make new friends.

Whether solo traveling or with your family, a cruise is a great time, and you will enjoy it!

In this post, I shared the best cruise lines for 18-year-olds bothn with and without parents. As a young adult who has been on over 30 cruises, I also shared my cruising experience as an 18-21 year old.

The Best Cruises For 18-Year-Olds (Without Parents!)

Looking for that first cruise holiday without the parents hanging around?

Or maybe you’re the parent and you’re sending off your kids with your blessing as they enter adulthood and want to enjoy a cruise with a bit of independence.

18 year olds on cruise

When I was 18 I spent a fantastic two weeks in Ibiza with my friends. We never thought of a cruise, but that would have been just as great. I’m sure!

Not every cruise line treats 18-year-olds as full adults though. So in this guide, I’ll let you know which cruise lines allow guests under 21 without parents, and what makes them a good choice.

Can you book a cruise at 18?

You can book a cruise when you’re 18 years old, and travel without your parents, but only on some cruise lines, and it depends on the destination too. For most cruises with a US port, you’d need to be 21 or older to be able to travel without a parent or other older passenger, but there are some exceptions

women having drinks at Carnival Cruises

The rules for cruising on your own closely mirror those for drinking age. So if you’re considered a minor then you’re not usually able to cruise on your own, and in the US, and on certain American-based cruise lines, anyone aged 20 or younger is a minor.

Thankfully those rules don’t apply everywhere. There are some cruises where 18-year-olds can travel without parents, and they can also drink alcohol at sea . Even when cruising from Florida. Yay!

What’s it like to cruise at 18?

YouTuber ShipFaced first started cruising without his parents at the age of 18. He went on Symphony of the Seas with a friend and also took a solo cruise at 18 on MSC Bellissima.

He commented: “Thinking about going from cruising as a teen to cruising as an adult can be a daunting thought. Not having the teen areas to meet people and most significantly having to plan the holiday all on your own. As an 18-year-old I did cruises solo and with friends and really enjoyed both styles.”

“You will make mistakes. For example, I got off at Genoa and got a connecting flight back home when there was a direct and therefore got stuck in Paris airport for hours. Despite that, it’s okay to make mistakes and you will learn from them. There is so much variety now for cruising as a young adult and there are so many companies and ships to choose from, it’s an amazing way to travel as an 18-year-old.”

What cruises can you go on alone at 18?

Generally, British cruise lines will allow guests to travel once they are 18 years or older, while select European and American cruise lines will allow guests to sail to European destinations, such as MSC, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Here are all the options for those aged 18, 19 or 20 to cruise without parents. I’ve ordered them starting with the best options…

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages is the best cruise line for under 21s looking for a party atmosphere. The ships are all adults-only, with 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds welcome to join the fun.

Virgin Cruise ship - Scarlet Lady

Expect deck parties with well-known DJs on select sailings, beach parties, nightclubs, risque entertainment, drag brunches, and themed events that are fantastic fun.

Virgin Voyages pool

There’s a fantastic menu of drinks to choose from and 18-year-olds are allowed to drink alcohol. The United States doesn’t allow under 21s to drink, but as soon as the ship is 12 nautical miles away from the US and in international waters , the bar is yours.

2. MSC Cruises (avoiding the US)

MSC Cruises is another great choice for those under 21 who wish to travel without their parents. But, you’ll only be allowed on cruises that don’t include ports in the US.

MSC Virtuosa

MSC ships have a lively atmosphere on board, with good evening entertainment, a wide variety of dining options, and plenty of bars where you can grab a cocktail. MSC Cruises are pretty cheap too so they’re a good option for students or anyone who doesn’t have a ton of cash to splash.

MSC Virtuosa water park

MSC Cruises’ drinks packages are pretty reasonably priced and 18-year-olds on non-US can also drink alcohol.

3. Royal Caribbean (avoiding the US)

One of the biggest cruise lines in the world, Royal Caribbean is an excellent choice for 18- to 20-year-olds who want a good atmosphere throughout their whole voyage. These are the ships packed with the most daytime activities, including rock climbing and surf simulators.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships

And then at night, there are some really cool bars and lounges where you can relax, while different ships have karaoke venues, escape rooms and more. Plus there’s always a nightclub if you fancy a late one.

4. Disney Cruise Line (avoiding the US)

Disney Cruise Line does accept guests who are aged 18 and over on European cruises, but you won’t be able to drink if you’re not travelling with your parents. Still, a Disney cruise is not a booze cruise!

Disney Wish

Choose a Disney sailing if you love everything to do with the House of Mouse – you can expect amazing live entertainment, fun restaurants and some exciting daytime activities including water slides. A lot of the features are aimed at younger children though, and be aware that Disney cruises are expensive .

5. P&O Cruises

P&O is one of the biggest cruise lines operating out of Britain, and they have a mix of ships to suit different audiences. If you’re aged 18-20 you can either choose to sail on one of the two adults-only ships, or pick a family ship if you want the newest options such as Iona and Arvia.

Arvia

I’d say that the family ships are actually better, as you’re more likely to meet people your own age. The adult-only ships are much smaller and tend to attract the over 50s.

Arvia in particular has some cool features like a high ropes course, mini golf and an escape room.

mini golf and high ropes on Arvia

There’s a good mix of daytime activities if you want to relax, and at night there are some interesting bars that offer a more lively atmosphere.

6. Celebrity Cruises (avoiding the US)

Celebrity Cruises is a premium cruise line with ships that are modern and sleek. Expect innovative features including a moving bar on the side of the latest ships, real grass lawns where you can unwind, and stunning dining venues.

Jenni with Celebrity APEX cruise ship

A Celebrity cruise would be a good choice if you have a healthy budget to spend and you aren’t looking for too many daytime activities, but you’d like a contemporary cruise experience.

7. Marella Cruises

Marella Cruises is a British cruise line that offers a good mix of daytime and evening activities, although nothing too wild or youth-oriented. Still, 18-year-olds are welcome on the ships and are allowed to drink as well.

Marella Cruise - Explorer

The ships do all have a nightclub too, as well as various bars, so while it’s not a really young atmosphere there are plenty of places you can relax and have fun. Plus Marella’s all-inclusive options are very affordable for the young adult on a budget.

8. Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador Cruise Line is a relatively new British cruise line that is aimed, by its own admission, at the mainly over-50s crowd, although all adults aged 18 and over can book.

Ambassador Cruise Line Ship - Ambience

Don’t expect a party atmosphere on board. But if you are looking to travel and explore, and you like the idea of no-hassle cruising from the UK without flying, it’s worth exploring the sailings on offer.

9. Fred. Olsen

Traditionally, Fred. Olsen cruises have been most popular with the older market, but 18-year-olds are welcome onboard. I’ve recently sailed on a Fred. Olsen cruise and it wasn’t what I expected. I was one of the younger people on board and I’m 38!

Fred. Olsen Borealis Cruise Review

Again, don’t expect a party atmosphere. If you’re an 18-year-old who enjoys quiet relaxation, craft activities and exploring destinations then yes, consider a Fred. Olsen cruise. But this isn’t the cruise if you want to get a bit rowdy.

Cunard is the quintessential traditional cruising experience and, being a British cruise line, guests are welcome to book without their parents once they reach 18.

Cunard ships

With a Cunard cruise, you should expect more of a formal atmosphere than you’d find on other cruise lines on this list and the other cruisers will be mostly retired people. If that appeals, and you’re not looking for ships to be packed with innovation or thrilling daytime activities then certainly take a look.

11. Carnival

Technically, you can also cruise with Carnival if you’re aged 18 to 20, including ports in the US – but you have to be married and travelling with your spouse. That’s the only time that guests under 21 can travel without someone aged at least 25 with them.

Carnival cruisers

Can you drink on a cruise at 18?

There are some cruise lines where you can drink when you’re 18, but it depends on the cruise line and the itinerary – again, if you’re cruising to the US then you can’t drink even on the rest of the cruise, unless you’re on a Virgin Voyages ship.

women drinking beers

You’ll probably want to note that some cruises also only allow 18- to 20-year-olds to drink beer, cider and wine – so no spirits – while others ask parents to sign a waiver saying they’re happy for their 18 to 20-year-olds to drink alcohol. But the parents have to be on that cruise with them.

So, if you’re 18, 19 or 20 years old and you want to book a cruise without the old folk hovering around you, there are a selection of cruise lines you can choose from, provided you stick to mainly European destinations.

Can an 18-Year-Old Cruise Alone?

The general policy for most cruise lines requires that at least one person in each cabin must be 21 years or older. However, like the ocean tides, this rule ebbs and flows depending on the cruise line.

Now, let’s drop anchor on a few specific cruise lines. Royal Caribbean is a fan favorite and allows 18-year-olds to sail unaccompanied on their cruise ships, provided they have a permission letter from their parents or guardian. Isn’t that something to yodel about from the crow’s nest?

carnival cruise activities for 18 year olds

Next up, we have Carnival Cruise Line , known for its “Fun Ships”. Here, you can only sail alone if you’re at least 21. But don’t abandon ship just yet, 18-year-olds! Carnival Cruises permits passengers between 18 and 21 to sail if they are accompanied by someone 25 years or older in the same cabin.

Switching sails to Norwegian Cruise Line requires passengers under the age of 21 to be accompanied by a passenger 21 or older in the same or a connecting stateroom.

Other cruise lines have their own rules, too. So, while you may be able to take command of your own voyage on some cruise ships, it’s always best to double-check the age policy of the specific cruise line. Now, isn’t that a nautical mile of information to take in? Sail forth, young sea dogs! The ocean of knowledge is vast, and we’ve just begun to navigate it.

  • Explore Independently : Shore excursions are great, but don’t be afraid to explore ports on your own (or with new friends). Just remember to be back on time!
  • Budget Wisely : Keep track of your onboard spending. Those small purchases can add up!
  • Have Fun, Be Responsible : Enjoy your newfound independence, but remember to respect the ship’s rules and your fellow passengers.

Hoist the anchor, and prepare for a voyage filled with excitement, adventure, and unforgettable memories! It’s your journey, so make every moment count!

That’s a wrap, shipmates! We’ve navigated through the ins and outs of cruising for 18-year-olds, from understanding the age policies of different cruise lines and exploring the best cruise lines for young adults to diving into exciting onboard activities and shore excursions. We’ve also charted the course for understanding cruise ship safety and etiquette and even shared a treasure chest of tips tailored just for 18-year-olds.

ins and outs of cruising for 18-year-olds

So, to all the young adventurers, consider a cruise vacation your next great journey. There’s a whole ocean of experiences waiting for you. Grab your sea legs, embrace the spirit of adventure, and set sail on the voyage of a lifetime! Happy cruising!

Do any cruises allow 18-year-olds?

Many cruise lines allow 18-year-olds to sail unaccompanied, although policies can vary. Some, like Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises, permit guests aged 18 and above to cruise alone. Others, such as Disney Cruise Line, require at least one person to be 21 or older in each cabin. Always check the specific age policies of your chosen cruise line before booking.

Can a 21 and 18-year-old go on a cruise together?

Absolutely! An 18-year-old and a 21-year-old can definitely go on a cruise together. Most cruises, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Carnival Cruise Line, allow passengers aged 18 and up to sail unaccompanied. However, for certain activities or areas, like casinos or bars, the minimum age might be 21. So, both can enjoy the exciting amenities, but certain restrictions might apply to the younger cruiser.

Can you drink on a cruise at 18?

The legal drinking age in many countries is 18, most cruises, including Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, set their minimum drinking age at 21, especially for cruises departing from U.S. ports. However, some lines like MSC Cruises and P&O Cruises allow 18-year-olds to drink alcohol on certain itineraries where the legal drinking age of the port is 18. Always check the specific policy of your chosen cruise line.

Does Royal Caribbean allow 18-year-olds to drink?

Typically, the lowest drinking age on most Royal Caribbean cruises is 21. However, for cruises departing from certain international ports where the legal drinking age is lower, Royal Caribbean may reduce the onboard drinking age to 18. This varies by itinerary and is subject to change, so it’s always best to check the specific policy of your Royal Caribbean cruise before setting sail.

In fact, just take a look at the memorable thrills Carnival Vista ® has waiting for your entire family as you cruise from Galveston to the crystal blue waters and perfectly sun-baked beaches of the Caribbean.

As you’ll see, a cruise to the Caribbean promises to be the time of every kid’s life with amazing entertainment, non-stop fun, and our famous cruise dining options that they’ll be talking about for years.

Family Fun Made Easy

Did you ever think it would be possible to find a family vacation that offers so many exciting experiences, you might have trouble choosing which to try? Well, the good news is that while on your Caribbean cruise , you can go ahead and try them all! And when we say Carnival Vista makes family fun easy, just a sampling of what awaits you onboard usually more than proves our point.

  • SkyRide ® lets you soar above the deck as you pedal across a safe but thrilling course against a fellow cruiser for racing supremacy. By the way, SkyRide ® also gives you the best ocean views of anywhere on the ship, so we won’t blame you if you throw the race to soak in those Caribbean sunsets.
  • What do you get when you cross a fun-filled cruise ship with the wettest waterpark imaginable? WaterWorks is what you get, and we promise you that its twisting and turning waterslides are every bit as fun as your imagination tells you they are.
  • SportSquare ™ lets you put your competitive spirit on full display as you square off against your family members and other cruisers in mini-golf, volleyball, hoops, billiards, or just about anything else that will get those competitive juices flowing.
  • Speaking of SportSquare ™ , Ropes Course  tests your athletic chops with a challenging, fun, and safe obstacle course that is thrilling, exciting, and sure to get your pulse racing.

  • Of course, there’s always room for an action-packed Video Arcade to bring out the fun for everyone. Open 24 hours a day with everything from classic favorites to the newest games, our Video Arcade is a sure-fire way to find some family-friendly fun while cruising to a Caribbean paradise.

A Seussian Good Time

Nothing says family fun like the word-twisting, color-bending, and shape-shifting world of all things Dr. Seuss. Thankfully, Carnival Vista’s Seuss at Sea ™ is a portal into that whimsical world with themed dining, activities, and events that kids of all ages adore. Naturally, parents usually find themselves with big grins painted across their faces as well.

Start things out with a bang with Seuss-A-Palooza Story Time ™ , an interactive reading of one of the author’s classics where you become part of the story. Once the family is feeling especially Seussian, take part in the truly one-of-a-kind Seuss-a-Palooza Parade ™ . Walk next to your favorite characters as you march down the deck and celebrate all things Dr. Seuss.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Seuss Bookville ™ is a completely unique experience that lets your little ones soak in their favorite books in a room decked out with memorable characters, dizzying colors, and shapes that will make them feel as if they’re sitting inside the book they’re reading.

Programs For Every Age

Whether on an exciting Caribbean cruise or back home hanging out with friends, socialization is a big part of a kid’s life. Kids want to be around other kids, no matter their age, even during a family vacation onboard Carnival Vista.

And as you might’ve guessed, Carnival already thought of that and has several programs specifically geared to making sure kids of all ages enjoy every moment on your family vacation while sailing the Caribbean Sea.

  • Think of Camp Ocean ™ as summer camp while cruising through the beautiful Caribbean. Kids from 2 to 11 get to play with others and enjoy a safe and supervised atmosphere with kid-friendly meals, movies, games, activities, and so much more.
  • For our preteen and early teen cruisers, Circle C ® is a hang-out spot made just for them with music, movies, activities, and plenty of comfy places to just kick back. Circle C is a safe, fun, friendly environment that lets your 12 to 14-year old do what they do best — chill out with kids their own age and have fun.
  • Older teens also have a dedicated spot while onboard Carnival Vista. Club O2 ® is a place like no other, equal parts nightclub, arcade, and rec room with music, dancing, sports, movies, and everything a 15 to 17-year old would want for some fun, just while cruising to a tropical oasis.

  • Carnival hasn’t forgotten about mom and dad, either. Night Owls ® is another safe but fun environment for kids six months to 11 years old when it’s date night for the folks. Kids love staying up late, playing with other kids, and enjoying some good tunes, games, movies, and contests, all while mom and dad enjoy everything that our incredible ship has in store for them as well.

Dining Options as Big as the Caribbean

Last but certainly not least, the fantastic dining options onboard Carnival Vista ® have something that even the most finicky of eaters will love. From fine dining to quick but delicious, finding something everyone will like quickly turns from hassle to convenience with the endless variety of delectable dishes a Carnival cruise offers.

  • Guy’s Burger Joint mines the culinary imagination of the famous TV food personality to craft amazing fresh-off-the-grill burgers, hand-cut fries, endless toppings, and an inviting atmosphere that will quickly become everyone’s favorite.
  • How does some fresh, made-to-order Mexican food with handmade tortillas and salsa sound? BlueIguana Cantina ™ features tasty tacos, overflowing burritos, and a relaxing environment that overlooks the alluring Caribbean.
  • Kids and pizza are about as synonymous as they come. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered with our Pizzeria del Capitano , open 24 hours and always ready to make a delicious pie with your choice of toppings, hand-tossed dough, and only the freshest ingredients.
  • As every kid will readily attest, there’s always room for dessert. At Swirls , Carnival’s 24-hour ice cream joint lets kids pile the toppings on top of soft-serve ice cream or frozen yogurt stacked as high as gravity will allow. Swirls is always a welcome treat, whether in between onboard adventures or to cap off a busy and exciting day.

  • For our Dr. Seuss devotees, Carnival’s exclusive Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast ™ lets imaginations run wild while kids enjoy colorful and delicious dishes inspired by their favorite books. Don’t forget to take a picture and spend some time with your favorite Seussian characters.
  • You’re never too young or old to indulge in a sweet treat or two every now and again. That’s why Cherry on Top is such a favorite spot while onboard. An endless variety of candy, snacks, gifts, and plenty of sweet surprises make our confectionary shop a place that kids can’t help but gravitate towards — go figure!

Suffice it to say, a family cruise to the Caribbean onboard Carnival Vista ® will make lasting memories for kids and parents alike. With almost too many activities and good times to list, kids will love every moment they spend onboard, no matter their interests or age.

That said, there’s no time like the present to start planning your trip and chart a course to Galveston because Carnival Vista ® is waiting for your arrival.

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Book a cruise on  GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Winner: Tie

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

"Ice Spectacular" show on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

The 10 Best Cruises for Teens in 2024

C ruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

Raw HTML : GTS form Travel

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

Royal Caribbean International

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

If you're hanging out in the new Surfside neighborhood on Icon, a dedicated space for young families, teens will have easy access to the supervised teens-only club, Social 020, from this open-air space.

When you head ashore to Perfect Day in CocoCay, one of the best  cruise line private islands , teen cruisers will find plenty of fun land-based activities like Thrill Waterpark and 1,600-foot-long zip lines. Be sure not to miss another thrilling experience: Up, Up and Away. The helium balloon ride soars 450 feet above the ground to the highest vantage point in the Bahamas , offering incredible panoramic views of the island and surrounding turquoise waters.

Holland America Line

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

The Kids Club is complimentary for guests. The space is open daily, and you'll also find teen events around the ship. When it comes to dining, there are many teen-friendly dining options – where teens can even enjoy mocktails like nonalcoholic mojitos – at venues throughout the ship.

If you're cruising to Alaska with Holland America or other adventure-filled destinations, look for excursions that will appeal to younger family members like zip lining tours, trail hikes, float trips, helicopter tours and wilderness safaris. Alaska is a teen favorite, especially in Skagway (one of Alaska's top destinations ), where travelers can get a thrill out of dog mushing with a team of Alaskan huskies, taking a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, or going on a rock climbing excursion.

Princess Cruises

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. These offerings include Discovery Family and Animal Planet shore excursions and onboard entertainment like "The Voice of the Ocean," a musical competition.

Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. More indoor fun can be found at Thrill Theater (on Horizon and Vista ), an immersive cinematic experience where you'll feel the seat rumble, the wind blow through your hair and even a spritz of water during the action-packed video.

Celebrity Cruises

This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. On Caribbean sailings – especially when school is out for summer or on holidays – Celebrity has additional family-friendly shore excursions on its five- and seven-night sailings.
