Frequently Asked Questions

What is a carver.

The Carver is the ultimate urban vehicle for those who want to travel smarter. The Carver combines the benefits of a car and a scooter into a sensational, new driving experience.

What do I have to watch out for when operating a Carver for the first time?

The Carver behaves differently than any other vehicle you know! It is important to realize that the Carver is an enclosed scooter and not a car. For your own safety and that of others, it is important that you carefully follow these safety instructions:

  • Prevent abrupt steering movements!
  • Correct with smooth steering movements.
  • Take corners from the outside inwards.
  • Remember that the Carver widens when tilting.
  • Adjust your speed to a walking pace when cornering sharply or at an angle, or in dangerous situations.
  • Never deliberately cause the Carver to lose grip.
  • Reduce your speed in windy weather.
  • Acknowledge the acoustic safety signals and adjust your driving behavior immediately.
  • Always remain seated in the Carver, even as a passenger, while moving.
  • Never use the Carver off-road, on unpaved roads/subsurface.

For whom is the Carver designed?

The Carver is designed for people looking for an innovative and sustainable form of personal transport. Ideal for urban areas or just outside the city, the vehicle offers a unique combination of the manoeuvrability of a scooter and the comfort and safety of a car. It is an excellent choice for people who are looking for an eco-friendly alternative to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles and want to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in cities. Moreover, the Carver saves drivers time in traffic, thanks to its ability to bypass traffic jams and efficiently navigate busy city streets.

Where is the Carver designed and manufactured?

The Carver is a Dutch product, meaning that it was designed and developed in the Netherlands. Production, final assembly, installation of all electrical circuits and final quality control takes place in Southeast Asia.

Where am I allowed to park my Carver?

Parking rules depend on how you registered the vehicle.

Carver Base and R+ (moped) A moped may park along the road where permitted and in parking bays. The parking rules for normal cars also apply to the Carver. A moped may not be parked on the pavement.

Carver S+ (three-wheeled motor vehicle) The parking of a three-wheeled motorbike is different in each municipality. As a result, some municipalities only allow you to park along the road where permitted and in parking areas. Other municipalities also allow you to park on the pavement. Contact your municipality for the relevant rules.

Note: Many municipalities are currently reviewing legislation on parking. If you are not sure what the rules are, contact the municipality.

Where am I allowed to drive the Carver?

The traffic rules depend on the type of Carver you drive and how this vehicle is registered.

Carver Base and R+ (moped) With the Carver Base and R+, you are under the moped category and must drive on the carriageway. The speed limit on the carriageway for a moped is 45km/h. On roads of 80km/h or higher, there is regularly an exception where the road is prohibited for slow traffic and therefore also for mopeds. This exception is indicated by a C9 sign. Drivers of a moped are not allowed to use highways and freeways. Carver S+ (three-wheeled motor vehicle) With the Carver S+, you fall under the three-wheeled motor vehicle category and must ride on the carriageway both inside and outside built-up areas.

Note: Legislation for this type of vehicle changes rapidly. So check with the municipality if you are unsure of the rules.

From what age can I drive a Carver?

Carver Base and R+ (moped) The Carver Base and R+ are classified as mopeds in the Netherlands, UK, Malta, Italy, Germany and in Belgium so you can drive a Carver from the age of 16 with your AM licence (scooter licence). In Spain, you can get an AM licence from the age of 15 and in France, a special licence (Permis AM) allows you to drive a Carver from the age of 14.

Carver S+ (three-wheeled motor vehicle) The Carver S+ is classified as a three-wheeled motorbike in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and Belgium, the minimum age 18 and you need a car licence B (obtained before 18 January 2013) or a motorbike licence A. In France and Spain, the minimum age is 16 and the required driving licence is B1.

Note: Legislation for this type of vehicle changes rapidly. Always contact the municipality if you are unsure of the rules.

Which type of driver’s licence do I need?

Carver Base and R+ (moped) In the Netherlands, the UK, Malta, Italy, Germany, Spain and Belgium, you can drive a Carver with an AM licence (scooter licence). In France, you can drive the Carver with a special Permis AM licence.

Carver S+ (three-wheeled motor vehicle) In the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and Belgium, you can drive a Carver S+ with a car licence B (obtained before 18 January 2013) or a motorbike licence A. In Switzerland, the minimum required driving licence is category B1 (small and three-wheeled motor vehicles weighing up to 550 kg) or A restricted (motorbikes with a maximum power of 35 kW). In France and Spain, the minimum driving licence required is also category B1.

It is not permitted to drive the Carver or the Cargo with a trailer.

What certification does the Carver have?

The Carver Base and R+ have European type approval for vehicle class L2e. The Carver S+ has European type approval for vehicle class L5e.

Specifications

Is the carver 100% electric.

Absolutely! The Carver is a 100% electric vehicle. This means it uses no fossil fuels and produces no harmful emissions.

What is the range of the Carver?

The Carver Base and S+ have a range of 100 km. The Carver R+ has a range of 130 km. It is important to note that several factors can affect the range.

For example, the outside temperature can affect how well the battery holds its voltage. To counter this, the Carver has a heating element near the battery to optimise the temperature. In addition, the weight of the vehicle and your driving style can also play a role. When driving through hills or through the city with a lot of braking and acceleration, the battery will run down faster than when you drive at a constant speed on flat terrain.

What are the dimensions of the Carver?

The dimensions of the Carver Base and R+ are 2.89 m in length, 1.49 m in height and 98 cm in width.

The dimensions of the Carver S+ are 2.89 m in length, 1.49 m in height and 1.06 m in width.

What’s the Carver’s maximum speed?

The Carver Base and R+ have a top speed of 45km/h, while the Carver S+ can reach a top speed of 80km/h. It is important to note that several factors can affect these speeds. These include load weight, weather conditions, driving style, road surface and slopes. All these factors can affect the power consumption of the electric motor.

As with all electric vehicles, battery level can affect a Carver’s maximum achievable speed. As the battery level drops, the vehicle may not be able to deliver maximum power. This may result in a lower top speed.

At lower temperatures, a battery cannot retain energy as well, which can lead to reduced range in winter compared to summer. Your driving style and traffic conditions can also affect your actual range and maximum speed.

When the battery has only 20% energy left, it automatically enters energy-saving mode and the maximum speed becomes lower than 80 km/h.

A feature of the Carver is that it recovers energy by regenerative braking itself. This helps get even more kilometres out of the range. For more information on sustainable driving with the Carver, visit our sustainable driving page.

What kind of engine does the Carver have?

The Carver Base and R+ have an electric motor with a maximum power of 2 x 2 kW and maximum torque of 2 x 150 Nm. The Carver S+ has an electric motor with a maximum power of 2 x 3 kW and a maximum torque of 2 x 150 Nm.

In what colors is the Carver available?

However, it is important not to leave loose objects in the Carver while driving. The Carver Cargo has a 500-litre cargo space at the rear and behind the driver’s seat there is room for luggage.

Is it safe and allowed to transport a baby or child in the passenger seat?

By law, the driver and passenger are required to use the available seatbelts. All passengers under the age of 18 years and whose height is below 1.35 meters, need to make use of an officially certified children’s safety seat. Carefully follow the instructions provided with the car seat. When in doubt, ask the manufacturer of the children’s safety seat for advice It is forbidden to carry more passengers than the amount of seat belts allow for.

Can I transport two small children on the passenger seat?

To charge the Carver you take the cord, found at the back of the vehicle. This cord is attached to the vehicle and rolls up automatically. Charging can be done via a regular 230 V outlet, or via a charging station with an adapter cable.

How long does it take to charge a Carver?

Carver R+ and S+ 80% charging time: 3 hours Carver R+ and S+ 100% charging time: 3 hours and 45 minutes

Carver Base 80% charging time: 4 hours Carver Base 100% charging time: 5 hours

Is it harmful to the battery if I charge my Carver when it’s still 30% full?

No, the Carver uses a lithium iron phosphate battery. This type of battery does not lose any of its quality or capacity if you charge it when it’s half full. To preserve the life of the battery, it is recommended to regularly charge the battery to 100%.

Can I charge my Carver at a car charging station on the street?

You can charge your Carver at a charging station with a converter to 230 V. We offer this via our webshop as an extra accessory. It is not possible to Fast Charge the Carver via a fast charging station.

Does the Carver make use of regenerative braking?

Yes, the Carver makes use of regenerative braking, thus the battery will recharge some of its power while descending or braking.

What is the battery’s life span?

Unfortunately, there is little to say about the expected life of the battery at this time, we have not yet been able to test this in practice so it is unknown how the battery will perform over a longer period of time. It is expected that the battery will last at least ten years, but that is still an estimate at this time.

Where can I insure my Carver?

Discuss insurance options with your Carver dealer or check our insurance page .

What’s the duration of the warranty?

The warranty will be due only in case of defects or production’s noncompliance of the product, and only when the product has been used under the terms established in the user manual .

What’s not included in the warranty?

Tires are not included in the warranty.

What actions would nullify the warranty of your Carver?

15 Best Things to Do in Carver (MA)

West of Plymouth, this bucolic town in Southeastern Massachusetts is in a swampy landscape. In fact, 50% of Carver’s area is made up of wetlands.

From the 18th century, this made the town a prime spot for bog iron, dredged from the ponds and forged at iron works.

When that industry went into decline, the town’s wetlands became cranberry bogs. By the turn of the 20th century, a fifth of all cranberries grown in the United States were harvested here.

Cranberries are still a part of life in Carver. The town’s biggest attraction is on the shores of vast cranberry bogs, and there are a few commercial operations in the area that you can visit around harvest time.

The massive pine barrens and abundant wetlands in Carver have staved off development, and allowed the town to keep its rural character—even the summer farmers’ market is in a grove of tall pines.

1. Edaville Family Theme Park

Edaville Family Theme Park

One of the oldest heritage railroads in the United States is still going strong in Carver. This is the star attraction of Edaville Family Theme Park, founded in 1947 by one Ellis D. Atwood on his sprawling cranberry farm.

Steam-powered trains chug along a two-foot gauge railroad that bends through a landscape of cranberry bogs, which become ever redder as the season progresses.

Over time the railroad has been accompanied by lots of other attractions. A big one is Dino-Land, where you’ll tour through woodlands inhabited by more than 20 lifesize dinosaurs.

The theme park also has the license for Thomas the Train, and Thomas Land USA has 11 rides based on the classic children’s TV show.

There’s indoor fun at Ellis’ Playhouse, as well as an arcade, a giant indoor model railroad, and a museum that delves into the history and culture of cranberry farming.

2. Myles Standish State Forest

Myles Standish State Forest

On the southeastern corner of Carver and spreading into Plymouth is the largest public open space in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Named for the Mayflower passenger and military adviser for the Plymouth Colony, Myles Standish State Forest is more than 12,000 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak forest, hiding lakes, kettle ponds and cranberry bogs.

This is all a vast natural playground where you can hike, swim, fish, paddle, hunt, camp and set off on a horseback ride. Perhaps the best way to encounter the forest is on a bicycle, as there are 15 miles of easy paved trails, looping around those beautiful ponds.

3. Cranberry Bogs

Cranberry Bogs, Carver

Stick a pin in a map of Carver and there’s a good chance you’ll land on cranberry bog. One way you can get to know the town a little better, and understand the unique process of cultivating cranberries is to visit one of these farms.

There are two in Carver that open their doors to the public, depending on the season. You’ve got Red Meadow, which we’ll talk about a bit later.

Also here is Edgewood Bogs/Cape Cod Select, where you can purchase fresh and frozen cranberries, as well as gift boxes from the store.

Just across the line in Middleboro, Benson’s Pond allows visitors to experience the cranberry harvest first hand, and you can put on a pair of waders to become a “Cranberry Bogger for the Day” in fall.

4. King Richard’s Faire

King Richard’s Faire

The largest and longest-running renaissance fair in New England takes place in Carver. First held in 1982, King Richard’s Faire is on permanent property, spread across 80 acres of pine forest.

Normally taking place on weekends and Monday holidays in September and October, the fair is centered on a 16th century-style marketplace with a big cast of minstrels, magicians, fire-eaters, puppeteers, jousting knights, aerialists, and more.

There are eight performance stages here with something fresh to see throughout the day, along with artisans selling handspun pottery, unique jewelry, leather goods, and tons more. Food is at the heart of the experience, including classics like a spit-roasted turkey leg.

5. Red Meadow Farm

Red Meadow Farm

In the last few years this farm in Carver, with seven acres of cranberry bogs, has been taken over by a couple who had previously worked in the technology industry in Boston.

Cranberries are the main crop at Red Meadow Farm, but there’s also a pumpkin patch, apiary, and a flock of Painted Desert and Katahdin sheep.

You can call in at the farmstand, opened spring 2023, for a host of cranberry-related goodies, and a big choice of local and regional products. Eventually there will also be a wine, mead and cider operation at Red Meadow Farm.

6. Sampson’s Pond

Kayaking

Next door to Edaville Family Theme Park is a 310-acre Great Pond, a popular spot for water activities in the warmer months.

There’s a free paved launching ramp at Sampson’s Pond off Lake View Street, and this is a great place for some paddling with coves, little islands and interesting rocky outcrops.

The boat launch is a popular hangout on warm summer days, and the pond is one of two designated swimming locations in the town.

You may be interested to know that Sampson’s Pond was actually marshland until the turn of the 19th century when it was excavated as a source of bog iron. Even today there’s a rusty tint to the water thanks to the presence of iron ore in the soils.

7. Savery Avenue

Savery Avenue

Something well worth checking out near King Richard’s Faire is a preserved stretch of historic road, recognized as the oldest divided highway in America.

This was opened in 1860 by one William Savery, whose plan was for trees on the edge of the road and through the middle to provide “shade and ornament for man and beast”.

At the turn of the century Savery Avenue was macadamized—paved with compact layers of crushed stone—and today a long section of the road has been preserved in a parcel of town-owned conservation land.

Away from the avenue there’s a knot of trails leading off into the stunning mature pine woodland. The high canopy is the perfect nesting site for birds like black-capped chickadees, pine warblers and blue jays.

8. Shurtleff Park

Coffee in the Park

Opposite the Town Hall in the center of Carver there’s a public park in a beautiful stand of tall pines. In summer Shurtleff Park is the setting for the Carver Farmers’ Market, which we’ll cover in more detail below.

At any other time this is a lovely place to pause for a moment, and maybe enjoy a coffee or picnic from one of the establishments close by.

Take a moment to admire the Soldiers and Sailors monument, erected in 1910. The park was presented to the town in 1908, and has always been a venue for outdoor events, many of which coincide with the market.

9. Johns Pond

Beach

Another place where families can cool off in the summer months is this natural pond, just over 20 acres in size.

Johns Pond has a mix of residential developments and working cranberry bogs on its shores, with a beach area on the south side. The water is relatively clear and is surprisingly warm in July and August.

In terms of fishing, the pond has decent counts of largemouth bass and panfish, despite its relatively small size. Alongside the beach there’s a gravel ramp where you can launch your cartop boat or canoe.

10. Carver Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There can’t be many farmers’ markets around with a prettier location than the one in Carver. This takes place in a grove of lofty pines at Shurtleff Park in the municipal center of the town.

Held on Sundays, mid-June through October, Carver Farmers’ Market is a heartwarming community event, incorporating live music and family activities into the experience.

On a normal week you can shop for fresh produce, fresh baked breads, pastries, seasoning mixes, preserves, salsas, and a big choice of handmade crafts. A great time to pay a visit is in fall, during the cranberry season.

11. Erickson’s Ice Cream Cafe

Ice Cream

Open May to mid-September, this ice cream stand at 287 Tremont Street has been in business since 1969, and is an integral part of summer in Carver.

Away from the roadside, Erickson’s Ice Cream Cafe has a gorgeous outdoor area where you can enjoy your frozen treat, with rows of picnic tables bordered by a lawn and tall trees.

The ice cream served here is the award-winning Richardson’s Ice Cream, made not far away in Middleton, MA. At any time there are more than 50 flavors available, with fall varieties like pumpkin and cranberry later in the season.

To mix things up there’s a selection of frappes, freezes, sundaes, lime rickeys, tonic floats, and banana splits.

12. Off the Wall Kidz

Ball Pit

There’s a branch of this regional chain of indoor playgrounds in Carver. Off the Wall Kidz is akin to a children’s museum, combining age-appropriate play structures with experiential exhibits.

In that vein you’ve got the Pretend City, where kids can navigate streets and role-play at amenities like a supermarket and clinic.

The Arcade has all kinds of old-time carnival games, along with newer video games, while the custom-designed play complex features a labyrinth of bridges, slides, soft climbing equipment, and trampolines.

There’s also a giant ball pit with some 25,000 balls, and a separate toddler play area, ringed by a soft barrier for extra peace of mind.

13. The Cole Property Trails and Bog Roads

Hiking

To see more of the area’s signature wetlands and cranberry bogs you could explore this conservation property on the Plympton-Carver town line.

The Cole Property is deceptively large, on more than 240 acres of former agriculture. The looping blue trail leads you into this beautiful tract of pine forest, and passes the edge of an active cranberry bog.

If you want to spend more time outdoors you can continue east, where the connecting white trail soon links with the orange trail, tracing the rear of a residential subdivision and some marshland, before looping back towards the cranberry bogs.

14. Carver Community Playground

Playground

Another excellent little attraction in Carver’s center is this top-notch playground that has only recently been unveiled on the King Property behind the town hall.

Completed surrounded by a fence, the Carver Community Playground has been rated as one of the best for miles around.

The space is divided into areas for children aged 2-5 and 5-12, and as well as the expected climbing structures, slides and swings there’s all kinds of additional fun.

Children can play with interactive musical installations, or make the most of the trucks and diggers in the sandbox. There are benches all around for parents, as well as a covered picnic area where everyone can take time out during the fun.

15. Camden Trail – Indian Brook Conservation Land

Hiking Trails

Near Sampson Pond and Edaville Family Theme Park there’s an unfrequented parcel of town-owned conservation land, acquired in 2003.

The entrance to Indian Brook Conservation Land is easy to miss from the roadside on Indian Street. There’s a small information kiosk here, at the start of the Camden Trail.

This heads north into the woods, before forking into several branches that have been linked by a newer trail, so you can spend about half an hour on a gentle walk. On the way you’ll pass vernal pools, and a picturesque section of Indian Brook.

Just returned from our vacation to Negril, Jamaica! Had an excellent time and thanks to Michelle at Carber Travel for the excellent recommendations including restaurants, club Mobay, and resort!! So important to me to use a reputable, reliable and honest travel agent!! Thanks again and we starting to think about our next trip!!

Photo of Nancy K.

This agency charges $50 per airline reservation even if they book your land. They do not tell you in advance We were a family of 6 , traveling to multiple destinations . In addition, the owner manages to omit important details that will cost you money- ie he neglected to tell me that a travel voucher I agreed to was non refundable , even if I paid the penalty. He also booked us seats on a new flight, when I simply asked him to change our existing flight , charging another$300 commission! Yes, I was surprised and outraged !

Most regrettably, I engaged Carber Travel to book a recent family vacation for six people traveling to multiple destinations, on multiple flights. Regret#1 $50 Agent Fee Carber Travel imposes a $50.00 "agent fee" for each airline seat they book, which I was unaware of, and the agent, Sandy D'Gabriel, neglected to mention. Generally I book my own flights, ( .....A simple process for any seasoned traveler; browse flights online, click on the selected flight, enter credit card information , print the ticket), although I have used travel agents in the past, they did not to the best of my recollection, impose any airline booking fees .Since there were six of us traveling , each flight we took incurred a fee of $300.00. While my son selected most of our flights, Carber Travel was handling our land arrangements, including hotels, tours and transfers, so I stupidly asked D'Gabriel to book the flights which my son had selected , thinking that would simplify coordination. Regret #2 Non- Refundable Flights Originally our plans called for flights from Newark to Tel Aviv on El Al , Tel Aviv to Cairo on EgyptAir, Cairo to Newark, with a layover in Vienna on Austria Air, Cairo back to Tel Aiv on EgyptAir, for me alone, and lastly Tel Aviv to Newark for me alone on United . Sandy D'Gabriel booked non -refundable seats on all the flights, except United, for which I used my United miles, neglecting to mention that the seats were all non- refundable . After October 7th when we were forced to change our plans, I first became aware of the non-refundable nature of our booked seats. Israel had to be cancelled, and a cancellation fee of $270 per ticket was imposed by El Al for each seat. D'Gabriel told me that El Al was also offering vouchers in lieu of the paying the penalty.I paid the penalty for my son and his family , but regardless of the fact that our travel plans were changed due to raging war, D' Gabriel refused to refund the $50 per seat agent fees . Egregious at best! I opted to take the 2 year voucher offered by El Al for myself, assuming that if the war continued I could cancel and then pay the $270.00 cancellation fee. NOT TRUE. D' Gabriel neglected to mention that accepting the voucher meant I had to use it within the 2 year period, or I would forfeit the entire price of the ticket , $2780. The Austria Air non- refundable seats came with another surprise - no cancellation fee option. We could either use the seats or forfeit the entire cost for all the tickets Regret # 3 Losing Control of Travel Plans By engaging Carber Travel to book the original flights , I lost the ability to make any changes to these flights . Only Carber Travel could now make changes. Another important omission by D'Gabriel. We substituted UAE for Israel , so I hoped our EgyptAir tickets from Tel Aviv to Cairo could be changed to and EgyptAir tickets on a flight my son selected from Abu Dhabi to Cairo. I called EgyptAir , and they said it could be done, but only Carber Travel could do it. I was therefore forced to call Carber Travel to ask D'Gabriel to make this change for us, since I could not make it myself. Instead, he made NEW reservations for us on EgyptAir , imposing another $300 in agent fees for the Abu Dhabi to Cairo flight for 6 people . He said the proposed change could not be made. My list of regrets continues , but if you have read this far , you are unlikely to engage Carber Travel to book your flights, and if you do , at least you will know what to expect. It is possible that travel agents today are beginning to charge airline booking fees , and perhaps it makes sense for a company booking a conference for dozens of employees or attendees, arriving and departing at different times, but in my case, considering the circumstances , I feel imposing these fees without disclosure was not only unwarranted, but egregious.

Choosing the Right RV Cover Fabric

Materials are Available for Every Type of Environment

There are a variety of different RV cover materials to choose from. Which is best for your RV will depend on your environment. If your area experiences a lot of sun, you’ll want a cover that provides strong UV protection like the ADCO DuPont Tyvek Plus Wind. If your RV will be sitting under heavy rain, you’ll need a cover that beads rain and provides thorough breathability, like ADCO’s SFS AquaShed Designer Series covers. If your area gets a lot of ice and snow, a durable cover that provides superior winter protection, like the Classic Accessories Skyshield, is recommended.

Measuring Your Travel Trailer RV for a Cover

RV Cover FAQs

If you’re looking for an RV cover, it’s likely that you have some questions. We share answers to the most common questions below.

Is an RV Cover Worth the Effort?

RV covers protect your motorhome or travel trailer from damaging UV rays, mold, ice, and other hazards that come with storing. Some might suggest waxing your RV a couple times per year, however doing so does not offer the same level of protection as a cover. RV covers are specifically designed to fit your RV, preventing wind from sending debris across the exterior, causing scratches. Covering your RV will reduce the expense of maintenance and repairs, extending the life of your RV.

Will a Cover Scratch My RV?

It’s possible that a cover could scratch your RV if you’re using a cover that’s significantly too large for your RV or if it’s not properly installed. But a properly-fitting cover will not scratch your RV — it will actually prevent scratches from debris. Before installing your cover, clean your RV to remove all dirt and debris and use tie straps to prevent the cover from flapping in the wind.

Which RV Cover is Best for Protection from the Sun?

While several types of fabric are excellent for UV and sun protection, we recommend ADCO’s DuPont Tyvek Plus Wind. This cover features a top roof panel that is specifically designed for intense UV exposure. Triple-layered polypropylene sides allow breathability to prevent mold and mildew.

What’s the Best RV Cover for Winter?

Winter RV covers need to be especially durable to withstand ice and snow as well as UV rays. We recommend Classic Accessories Skyshield. The Dupont Tyvek roof is completely weatherproof, while the sides are made of a rip stop fabric that can easily handle high winds.

What’s the Best RV Cover for Rainy Areas?

Water-prone areas require covers that channel water away from the RV as well as provide breathability to prevent mold and mildew. ADCO’s SFS AquaShed Designer Series is designed specifically for climates with a lot of rainfall. The top panel beads water on contact, preventing it from pooling, and the triple-layered polypropylene sides provide breathability.

Why do You Not Sell Waterproof Covers?

RV covers that are completely waterproof aren’t breathable, and trapped humidity can cause a mold problem. We carry quality water-repellent covers because they allow essential airflow that prevents humidity from accumulating under the cover.

Will a Cover Cause Black Streaks on My RV?

Moisture causes black streaks to appear on RVs. Completely waterproof covers that aren’t breathable may generate black streaks, but a breathable, water-resistant cover will actually prevent black streaks.

How Do I Install an RV Cover?

Installing an RV cover is fairly simple. Just follow these five steps:

  • Clean your RV to eliminate all dirt and debris.
  • Starting at the front, place the cover on the roof of the RV, Then roll it out toward the back end.
  • Next, working from the front and going towards the back, pull the cover over the sides of the RV.
  • Secure the bottom of the RV cover under the front and the rear of the RV.
  • Finally, use tie-down straps to keep the cover secure.

Gabe’s Carver Gnarvester Review: Camp + Shred

“I can pick my way up tight lines, ride skinnies, drop ledges, and then unpack and make a cup of pourover…”

carver travel

I had been mulling on the idea of a fatbike or the new plus-sized Krampus as the ideal mountain biking camp rig for a while when I had the chance to test ride a Krampus from Geno at One On One bikes in Minneapolis. Minutes later I was hooked on the 29+ format and was chasing squirrels and taxicabs through the metropolis. A few weeks later I got my own Krampus from the fine folks at 21st Ave Bikes here in Portland and was blown away by the bike. Sure, it was a solid camping rig just like I expected, but what I couldn’t believe was its technical terrain prowess. I’ve always preferred techy steep lines, dabbling in trials and rolling big drops instead of hucking them. All of a sudden I was riding this rigid bike that felt more at home in boulder fields than my 7″ trail bike did.

Carver Gnarvester Review

The Krampus is a fantastic platform but a year later I was looking for some upgrades. Slacker geometry. Tucked rear wheel. Larger seat tube diameter for a dropper post. Tapered head tube. Thru axles. The fact that Carver’s Gnarvester was titanium didn’t hurt either, so I impulse bought one when my size popped up on Ebay last fall.

Carver Gnarvester Review

Again I was shocked at what a different ride it gave me. Most notably the rear wheel tuck—fully loaded I can lift the front end effortlessly and drop ledges much smoother. I swapped in a Fox Talas 34 from the stock carbon fork adding a great deal of weight, but what a relief after battering myself on the rigid Krampus in Idaho for 17 days last summer. It can drop the front end from 150mm to 120mm for steep climbs and has the Climb/Trail/Descend modes which I use constantly. I shaved 1mm off the fork bridge with a file to prevent tire rub and so far the super tight clearance has not been an issue in the mud at all. The Reverb dropper post is leagues better than the 27.2 KS Lev I was running previously. The sliding dropouts and breakable chainstay are well-made though they tend to creak. I’ll never set up the bike as a single speed, but they’ve been useful for adjusting knob clearance for different tires. The thru axles stiffen the whole bike up noticeably, preventing the flex rub on chain/chainstays. It would be nice to try it in a 27.5+ wheel size too: I didn’t mind the giant wheels on the Krampus, but the slacker geo of the Gnarvester make its height painfully obvious. That and the graphics are terrible.

Carver Gnarvester Review - Bikepacking Porcelain Rocket Frame bag and Seat Pack

But the Gnarvester rips. It’s a well-designed, solid, aggressive, modern mountain bike.

Carver Gnarvester Review

Many people prefer the ECR as a camping rig, but I’d rather favor a bike’s shredability over its campability. Geometry makes a much bigger difference when riding trails than it does on gravel roads. I’ll stick with aggressive mountain bike geometry and finesse my contact points to make the bike comfortable during long days in the saddle rather than tame down the core of the bike’s essence.

Carver Gnarvester Review - Bikepacking Porcelain Rocket Framebag and Seat Pack

And it camps surprisingly well. I had Scott from Porcelain Rocket make a cuben frame bag and extra svelte cuben Mr Fusion to accommodate my dropper post and double seatpost DIY hack. I’m stubborn, and decided to make my own handlebar roll with some PVC stand-offs, straps, and cowhide glued to HDPE sheeting. I’ve got a 20mm SON hub powering my B&M Luxos U that’s a fantastic dynamo light with USB port for charging my phone, steripen, headlamp, and camera batteries. That’s plenty of storage for a 5 day trip of moderately tolerable weather. If I’m bringing camera gear I generally end up riding with my HMG 2400 Southwest backpack as well. To round out my tacky rodeo clown aesthetic I made my own furry cowhide rims strips and set up my Maxxis Chronicles with a split tube tubeless system.

Carver Gnarvester Review - Bikepacking Porcelain Rocket Frame bag and Seat Pack

The Carver Gnarvester really does live up to its name, I can pick my way up tight lines, ride skinnies, drop ledges, and then unpack and make a cup of pourover. It’s an extremely versatile bike and I’m excited to see how the Plus platforms revolutionize not just the bikepacking world in the coming years— but the whole mountain biking realm.

Here’s why experts don’t think cloud seeding played a role in Dubai’s downpour

With cloud seeding, it may rain, but it doesn’t really pour or flood — at least nothing like what drenched the United Arab Emirates and paralyzed Dubai, meteorologists said.

Cloud seeding, although decades old, is still controversial in the weather community, mostly because it has been hard to prove that it does very much. No one reports the type of flooding that on Tuesday doused the UAE, which often deploys the technology in an attempt to squeeze every drop of moisture from a sky that usually gives less than 4 or 5 inches (10 to 13 centimeters) of rain a year.

“It’s most certainly not cloud seeding,” said private meteorologist Ryan Maue, former chief scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “If that occurred with cloud seeding, they’d have water all the time. You can’t create rain out of thin air per se and get 6 inches of water. That’s akin to perpetual motion technology.”

Meteorologists and climate scientists said the extreme rainfall is akin to what the world expects with human-caused climate change, and one way to know for certain that it was not caused by tinkering with clouds is that it was forecast days in advance. Atmospheric science researcher Tomer Burg pointed to computer models that six days earlier forecast several inches of rain — the typical amount for an entire year in the UAE.

Three low-pressure systems formed a train of storms slowly moving along the jet stream — the river of air that moves weather systems — toward the Persian Gulf, said University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann. Blaming cloud seeding ignores the forecasts and the cause, he said.

Many of the people pointing to cloud seeding are also climate change deniers who are trying to divert attention from what’s really happening, Mann and other scientists said.

“When we talk about heavy rainfall, we need to talk about climate change. Focusing on cloud seeding is misleading,” said Imperial College of London climate scientist Friederike Otto, who heads a team that does rapid attribution of weather extremes to see if they were caused by global warming or not. “Rainfall is becoming much heavier around the world as the climate warms because a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture.”

WHAT IS CLOUD SEEDING?

Clouds need tiny water or ice droplets called nuclei to make rain. The weather modification method uses planes and ground-based cannons to shoot particles into clouds making more nucleai, attracting moisture that falls as snow and rain. Usually silver iodide is used, but it can also be dry ice and other materials. The method, first pioneered in the 1940s, became popular in the U.S. West starting in the 1960s, mostly for snow.

It can’t create water from a clear sky — particles must be shot into a storm cloud that already holds moisture to get it to fall, or to fall more than it otherwise would naturally.

The desert nation of the United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain ever recorded there after a deluge flooded out Dubai International Airport, disrupting flights through the world’s busiest airfield for international travel.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?

A recent study of aerial seeding found a clear precipitation pattern on a radar that mirrored the seeding and offers evidence the method works. But exactly how effective it is remains unclear , scientists say.

The physics makes sense, but the results have been so small that scientists just can’t agree on whether it is fair to say it really works, said Maue and Mann.

Atmospheric forces are so huge and so chaotic that technically cloud seeding “is way too small a scale to create what happened,” Maue said. Extra rainfall from cloud seeding would have been minimal, both said.

WHO USES IT?

Despite not knowing its efficacy, governments in drought-stricken regions like the U.S. West and the UAE are often willing to invest in technology like seeding in the hopes of getting even a small amount of water.

Utah estimates cloud seeding helped increase its water supply by 12% in 2018, according to an analysis by the state’s Division of Water Resources. The analysis used estimates provided to them by the contractors paid to do the seeding.

Dozens of countries in Asia and the Middle East also use cloud seeding.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spent $2.4 million last year on cloud seeding along the overtapped Colorado River. Utah recently increased its seeding budget by tenfold.

SO WHAT CAUSED THE DELUGE?

That part of the Middle East doesn’t get many storms, but when it does, they are whoppers that dwarf what people in the United States are used to, Maue said.

Huge tropical storms like this “are not rare events for the Middle East,” said University of Reading meteorology professor Suzanne Gray. She cited a recent study analyzing nearly 100 such events over the southern Arabian Peninsula from 2000 to 2020, with most in March and April, including a March 2016 storm that dropped 9.4 inches (almost 24 centimeters) on Dubai in just a few hours.

The 2021 study said “a statistically significant increase in the (whopper storms) duration over southeast Arabian Peninsula has been found, suggesting that such extreme events may be even more impactful in a warming world.”

While cloud seeding can work around the margins, it doesn’t do big things, scientists say.

“It’s maybe a little bit of a human conceit that, yeah, we can control the weather in like a Star Trek sense,” Maue, who was appointed to NOAA by then-President Donald Trump, said. “Maybe on long time scales, climate time scales, we’re affecting the atmosphere on long time scales. But when it comes to controlling individual rain storms, we are not anywhere close to that. And if we were capable of doing that, I think we would be capable of solving many more difficult problems than creating a rain shower over Dubai.”

Borenstein reported from Washington, Peterson from Boulder, Colorado.
