7 on your side's tips to protect your trips with travel insurance.

Nina Pineda Image

NEW YORK (WABC) -- We are in the middle of heavy summer travel right now, and with so much uncertainty in the skies, more people than ever are turning to travel insurance.

"Big picture is you need it," travel consultant Janet Molenaro said.

Molenaro insured two trips recently, one group running with the bulls in Spain last week and the other a mom and daughter on a Sweet 16 trip to Disney World next month.

Why do they both need travel insurance?

"It does weather delay, travel delay, medical emergencies," Molenaro said. "If you are sick before you go on your trip, you cancel and get all your funds back."

How much it costs to cover your vacation depends on two factors: the cost of the trip and the age of the clients.

Generally, it's about 7% of your entire trip's price tag.

For example, to insure Jen Laner and her daughter Hannah's $3,500 birthday getaway to Orlando that included flights from Newark, hotel, and park tickets for Disney and Universal, they paid $240.

"God forbid they can't go," Molenaro said.

Travel insurance can protect the non-refundable portions of your vacation like tours, lodging, and cruises.

"You may sleep at JFK for a couple of days and you'll miss the boat, and you're out," Cook Travel owner Blake Fleetwood said. "Typically, the cruise line won't give you anything. If you're out, you're out."

7 On Your Side first interviewed Fleetwood on the Upper West Side in February of 2020, just weeks before the pandemic's worldwide spread. At that time, he did not recommend that expense of cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance.

"It is not a practical solution for most people," he said at the time.

Fast forward two years, and he's changed his tune given the current circumstances.

"You'll spend $600-$700, but it's worth it," he said. "I think it's worth it."

Now, very wary travelers would rather bite the bullet and spend 10% the cost of their trip instead of getting burned.

"Particularly if you're coming back from Europe or so, and you find that you have COVID and you have to stay another five to 10 days, that can be pricey," Fleetwood said. "Make sure your plan covers that."

The big takeaway is to go with a large well-known company, and always read the fine print and reviews to see how they stack up when reimbursing claims.

"If you are one of those people who is more nervous, then I recommend that cancel-at-any-time insurance," Molenaro said.

Will travel insurance cover you if you catch covid abroad here's what to look for in your policy.

Many companies now offer specific COVID travel insurance. As you plan your trip, here's what to look for while choosing a policy.

KGO logo

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The new travel restrictions announced Thursday may be just the beginning of tightened rules -- not only in the United States, but other countries too. If you're traveling in the next few weeks, especially abroad, experts say be ready for more limits, even border closures that can disrupt your trip.

So will travel insurance cover you?

This may be a time to get some insurance. There are specific COVID-19 policies that cover everything from a potential quarantine, to medical expenses to canceled tours. And with the new rule requiring a negative test result within 24 hours to come back home, experts say plan now.

RELATED: How omicron COVID-19 variant is changing holiday travel plans

Globetrotters were just beginning to come out of isolation, when the new variant brought a fresh set of travel restrictions. And experts say be ready for even more rules during the holiday travel rush ahead.

Travel insurance CEO Omar Kaywan says some countries may enact new restrictions, or even close borders if the new variant spreads.

"We are walking into the next six weeks of complete uncertainty. There's a lot of last-minute decisions that are being made, a lot of restrictions are being put in place by many countries," he says.

VIDEO: Travelers react to 'stress' of new omicron variant, possibility of new restrictions

channel 7 news travel insurance

New rules already require passengers to show a negative COVID test within 24 hours of their flight back to the U.S.

"This is something that they need to plan, and they need to start as soon as possible, wherever their destination is to book their appointments ASAP, because this is a requirement. and you will not be essentially getting on a plane coming back home, if you don't have your proof of negative COVID-19 test," Kaywan says.

A positive result could mean being stranded overseas in quarantine. Border restrictions may mean losing money for tours, lodging and transportation.

However, many companies offer specific COVID-19 travel insurance.

If you're going overseas, check for policies that cover:

  • Expenses in case you are quarantined
  • Medical coverage if you get sick from COVID
  • Cancelations for lodging, tours transportation and airfare
  • Finally, look for policies that let you cancel for any reason, such as not wanting to travel during a COVID surge.

"From what we've seen in the last couple days people are continuing with their travel plans and they'll see how it goes and what it's going to end up being," Kaywan says.

One thing that's still to be announced: what type of rapid test will be acceptable within that 24-hour window. 7 On Your Side will keep checking so you're ready if you're traveling over the holidays.

7 Best Cheap Travel Insurance Companies in April 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Finding the cheapest travel insurance is often a priority for travelers hoping to protect themselves and their finances while away from home.

But is it better to err on the side of affordable travel insurance or opt for a more comprehensive plan? That depends on your needs .

On average, a comprehensive plan that covers some combination of trip cancellation and interruption costs, medical coverage and baggage protection (and perhaps a number of other things) will cost you 5%-10% of what you paid for the trip, according to NerdWallet partner Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace.

That means a comprehensive policy for a trip that costs you $3,000 could run you anywhere between $150 and $300. Factors like the cost and length of your trip, the age of the travelers and how much protection you want can significantly influence what you pay for your plan.

Ultimately, Squaremouth recommends “the least expensive policy that offers the coverage [travelers] need.”

Factors we considered when picking cheap travel insurance plans

We considered a few factors as we looked for the most affordable travel insurance plans.

Price: If your goal is to find cheaper travel insurance, you want the price to be affordable.

Breadth of coverage: The best budget travel insurance is typically going to be a plan that offers a wide range of protections at an affordable cost, ensuring you’re protected with at least some coverage for a wide range of scenarios.

Uniqueness or customizability : While many travel insurance plans have similar protections, some stand out for particular coverage that can be helpful to certain travelers, like those needing to Cancel For Any Reason , those going on a cruise, or travelers with preexisting health conditions. We didn’t spring for the priciest plans with broad, deep coverage; instead, we picked those that meet a sort of budget "sweet spot" when it comes to cost efficiency.

An overview of the best cheap travel insurance plans

We looked at travel insurance quotes for a hypothetical 10-day trip to Italy in October 2023. The traveler is a 40-year-old man living in North Carolina who spent $2,000 on the trip, including airfare.

Reliable but cheap travel insurance providers

1. axa assistance usa (silver plan: $70).

channel 7 news travel insurance

Why we picked it:

The $500 missed connection benefit is great for cruise and tour participants. It covers additional transportation, accommodations and meal costs when you miss a cruise or tour departure.

Full trip cancellation and interruption coverage, along with up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket medical costs and baggage coverage.

Among the lowest prices we found.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than AXA's $70 Silver plan, a Gold plan only costs $19 more and gets you deeper coverage amounts and up to $35,000 in collision rental car insurance.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (ExactCare Value plan: $56)

channel 7 news travel insurance

Cheapest plan we found while still offering a wide array of protections.

Includes a preexisting medical condition waiver.

Add-on rental car collision coverage optional for $10 per day. You can pick how many days you want the additional coverage — it’s not all or nothing.

At $56, this plan comes in at less than 3% of the $2,000 trip cost.

3. IMG (iTravelInsured Lite plan: $77)

channel 7 news travel insurance

Treats COVID-19 like any other illness, which is to say, if your claim accepts flu, strep throat or appendicitis as an acceptable, covered condition, the coronavirus is, too.

Covers costs related to trip interruption up to 125%

Higher than normal limits on dental expenses, at $1,000. If your teeth are your Achilles heel (or your biggest fear), this plan might be for you.

The iTravelInsured Lite plan doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles that other plans do, like rental car coverage , Cancel For Any Reason coverage or waivers for pre-existing conditions. But you’ll have relatively solid across-the-board trip protections.

4. John Hancock (Silver plan: $93 for a mid-tier plan)

channel 7 news travel insurance

Mid-level plan (as opposed to a basic plan) at an affordable price for travelers who want more coverage without paying too much.

Includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on for travelers wanting flexibility. It is a bit pricey, at half the cost of the insurance ($46.50 extra for a $93 plan).

Reimburses up to $1,000 for lost baggage , far more than many basic plans.

Add-on rental car coverage for $9 per day.

At $88, John Hancock’s basic (Bronze) plan isn’t particularly affordable. But for just $4 extra, you can tap into the benefits of a mid-tier plan at still less than 5% of the total trip cost.

5. Nationwide (Essential plan: $76)

channel 7 news travel insurance

Includes a preexisting conditions waiver.

Add-on rental car coverage for $90.

Covers trip interruption at 125% of the trip cost while providing comprehensive emergency medical and baggage coverage.

6. Seven Corners (Basic plan: $75)

channel 7 news travel insurance

On top of standard trip protections, it includes a relatively affordable Cancel For Any Reason option for $31.50 extra.

If you plan to rent expensive sporting equipment, you might consider paying $10 extra to cover lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed gear.

COVID-19 coverage reimburses you for costs incurred if you have to quarantine .

Rental car coverage comes in at an affordable $7 per day.

Seven Corners’ Basic plan stands out because it offers a little bit of everything, appealing to athletic travelers, those who need affordable trip protections, those who want the flexibility to cancel for any reason and those still concerned about getting quarantined due to COVID-19.

7. Travelex Insurance Services (Basic plan: $71)

channel 7 news travel insurance

Straightforward: What you see is what you get. This plan’s coverage has fewer rules and caveats than many.

While not sporting the highest coverage amounts, it offers a solid range of protections to ensure you get at least something back when your travel is disrupted or you have a medical emergency.

Offers add-on rental car coverage for $10 per day.

At $71, the Travelex Basic plan’s cost is just over 3% of the $2,000 trip’s cost.

If you want to get travel insurance at the cheapest possible rate, here’s a trick. Put $0 as your trip cost, Stan Stanberg, co-founder of comparison site Travelinsurance.com said in an email.

“When excluding trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage the cost of a travel insurance plan goes down significantly,” Stanberg said.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical, trip delay , missed connection, baggage and other protections.

You’ll often find comprehensive travel insurance plans cost 5%-10% of your total trip cost, according to Squaremouth. This will often get you full trip cancellation and trip protection, baggage protection, emergency medical coverage and often other benefits.

Typically, the more you pay, the broader and deeper the coverage.

For many plans, you can purchase travel insurance up until you depart. However, to get access to the most protections possible, booking two days to two weeks after making your initial deposit is the best rule of thumb.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical,

, missed connection, baggage and other protections.

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

News Center 7 investigates: Will travel insurance cover pandemics differently from now on?

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, people are again cancelling their travel plans.

According to a report from CBS News , a recent survey shows 27 percent of respondents postponed a trip due to COVID-19 and 54 percent said the Delta variant has made them less interested in traveling right now.

But before travelers book or cancel their next trip, they should be aware of changes in the travel insurance industry.

Debbie Boyle said she and her husband planned a “bucket list trip” to New Zealand and Australia. The couple was supposed to go for a month in 2020.

Then, the pandemic hit.

Boyle said a lot of the hotels, airlines and other vendors refunded them — but not all. She said they were still out about $4,000.

>> The Drone Difference: Technology’s Role In Restoring Power Outages

But they had travel insurance, so they were feeling good.

“Oh yeah, no concerns,” Boyle said. “Something happens, God forbid, we’re covered. We get all of our money back.”

But Boyle said the insurance company denied their claim twice.

>> I-Team: Pandemic changes how military trains

“Of course, there’s no verbiage in there for pandemic. Nor did we think to look for that, right? I think that caught the whole world off guard,” she said.

News Center 7 spoke with the dean of Cedarville University’s School of Business Administration, Jeff Haymond, for some added perspective on this story. Haymond is also an economics professor at CU and holds a PhD in economics from George Mason University.

“I think it’s really helpful to take a look back at what we have insurance for in the first place,” Haymond said. “We insure ourselves to prevent unacceptable loss. And ‘unacceptable loss’ differs for different people at different income levels and … what will affect them.”

As for Boyle, she said she kept fighting and finally got reimbursed, but that she’ll think about travel insurance differently from now on.

“Trip insurance sounds like a good thing,” she said. “Now, I’m going to think twice about the fine detail and really question them about pandemic-type situations. If we buy travel insurance again, I’m going to go through that thing with a fine-tooth comb.”

>> I-Team: Will ending foreclose ban impact everyone’s home prices?

Bottom line, Haymond says, when it comes to travel insurance: if you can’t afford to eat the cost of the trip, don’t plan it in the first place. Haymond says be able to budget for the trip and self-insure. He adds, don’t buy insurance for something you can afford to lose.

“There’s some people that … if they were to have to eat a $400 plane ticket, that might mean they can’t make a car payment,” Haymond said. “That might mean they can’t make a house payment. That’s starting to get into unacceptable loss. Then, it might make more sense (to buy travel insurance). But for most of us, we want to try and budget so we can handle those kinds of losses because they are relatively rare.”

News Center 7 wanted to know if travel insurance will cover pandemics differently moving forward. There are two kinds of travel insurance policies: “Standard” and “Cancel For Any Reason” policies, which, despite the name, don’t cover every reason.

Before COVID-19, typically, neither covered pandemics. Currently, most “Standard” policies still don’t, but many “Cancel For Any Reason” policies do. But there’s a lot of gray area.

______________________________

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: So, what do “Cancel For Any Reason” plans typically cover?

A: “Trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delay, emergency medical care, and even emergency evacuation,” Mark Friedlander, with the Insurance Information Institute, said.

Q: What if your trip gets extended because you have to quarantine and can’t return home yet?

A: “Potentially, once again, it depends on how the policy is written,” Friedlander said. “Some have worked that in.”

Q: What if the government issues Stay at Home orders or shuts down airlines?

A: “In most cases, that is not covered,” Friedlander said.

Q: What if you get cold feet?

A: “That’s one exclusion that remains today. You cannot cancel a policy for being fearful of travel,” Friedlander said.

Jeremy Murchland is president of the insurance company, Seven Corners. It actually covered pandemics before COVID and still does.

“We have our trip protection plan, our travel protection plans,” he said. “We don’t exclude pandemics so, again, if a pandemic comes up and your trip’s interrupted or you get sick, it’s just covered like any other illness.”

Most standard policies still don’t cover COVID specifically, but now many “Cancel For Any Reason” policies do.

If you want pandemic coverage, look at “Cancel For Any Reason” policies. But, even then, they have exceptions, so read the fine print. And make sure they clearly cover pandemics and epidemics.

“Cancel for Any Reason” policies are typically 40-60 percent more expensive than a “Standard” policy. Plus, you usually won’t get back 100 percent of what you spend. It’s usually closer to 75 percent, but there are exceptions, so shop around.

Two questions to ask :

  • What are the requirements to cancel?
  • How many days ahead do I have to cancel?

Washington files suit against travel insurance company

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson today filed a lawsuit against one of the world’s biggest travel insurance companies.

He’s alleging deception and discrimination against people with mental health issues.

That’s what Ashley Oman, who bought travel insurance from Allianz, experienced when she planned two plane trips to Detroit to visit art schools.

Oman told us she lives with anxiety and depression from post-traumatic stress disorder.

“It turns out that I was having some issues when I was out there, and I wasn’t going to be able to make the second trip out,” she said.

Allianz refused to pay her claim for the second plane ticket she couldn’t use.

“You aren’t covered for any loss that results directly or indirectly from any mental or nervous health disorders like anxiety, depression, and others,” it stated in a letter, denying the claim.

Oman lost $424. She said she didn’t know about the mental health exemption.

“No, I did not. That was not clear when I purchased the policy,” she said.

The alleged deception is just one of the reasons Ferguson has just filed a lawsuit against Allianz.

“If you get an Alzheimer’s diagnosis after you bought this insurance and after you bought your plane ticket, and you have a doctor proving you should not travel because you have that Alzheimer’s diagnosis, they won’t refund your money. You know, I don’t know what kind of a company does that, but it’s not right,” Ferguson said.

And whether it’s travel insurance or anything else, Ferguson said Washington Civil Rights law bans discrimination on the basis of mental health.

That’s why Oman supports the lawsuit.

“It’s so important because with, with these types of loopholes in these companies, that is, it’s just unfair, and it’s a scam,” she said.

Allianz has yet to respond to our request for comment.

Family frustrated after cruise insurance paid out less than what policy cost

ATLANTA — Most travelers think buying travel insurance policies is the safe, smart choice in case something goes wrong.

Channel 2 consumer investigative reporter Justin Gray is learning that even if you have a policy, it may not protect your once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Most cruise lines offer travel insurance you can add on as part of the package, but it will typically set you back hundreds of dollars, and still may not pay out like travelers are expecting.

Wyletta Mitchell thought the $400 travel insurance policy she bought from Aon Insurance would protect her $9,300 Alaskan cruise for her 20th anniversary.

“It said that our trip was going to be covered 100%,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell and her family missed their flight connections, which meant they missed their boat.

Nearly a year later, they have only received $322 back from the insurance policy, which is less than she initially paid for the policy.

Channel 2 Consumer Advisor Clark Howard , a former travel agent himself, says you should always shop for separate, third-party travel insurance.

“My ironclad rule: Never, never, never buy trip coverage from a cruise line. You pay too much and it’s always junk,” Howard explained. “The brochure will tell you all the wonderful things, but it’s the contract...that has the bad stuff.”

Another traveler, Larry Asher, told Gray that although he was able to catch up with his Norwegian Cruise Line trip late after flight delays, he thought his policy would cover all the extra travel and hotel costs.

“We were expecting to be compensated since we did buy everything through the cruise line,” Asher said.

Instead, Asher’s $700 Aon policy got him a flat rate of $1,000, which, after the cost of the insurance, netted him a little over $200 in compensation.

Aon released a statement to Channel 2 Action News that read, in part,

“Every travel protection plan is different, so we encourage consumers to review their policy’s terms and conditions…Most policies offer a free-look period – typically 10 to 15 days – during which the consumer may cancel the plan and receive a refund without penalty.”

Howard also suggested that instead of a travel insurance policy, consider getting to the port a day or two early and treat the cost of a hotel as your insurance policy.
