Oman Tours & Vacations

Wide view of the Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman, with mountains in background

Less affluent than many of its oil-rich and decidedly showy neighbors, Oman’s modern development has been comparatively slow-paced with a laidback affability the country’s pay-off.

Crumbling Portuguese forts and tranquil fishing villages line the coast’s secluded shorelines, magnificent desert dunes and oases mottle the interior and traditionally garbed Bedouins can be spied drifting through the spice-filled souqs. Best of all, with their chunk of the Arabian Gulf having long served as a stopover point to centuries of merchant traders and explorers, the Omanis make for consummate hosts, ever keen to show off their country’s wares.

Best time to visit oman.

When it comes to the country’s weather, Oman is often divided into two regions – north and south – to account for two very different climates. Mid October to mid-March, when the weather is pleasantly warm, the mountain scenery clear and the rains light, is the best time to visit the more crowd-drawing north. Throughout the remainder of the year, the heat and humidity can be really quite oppressive – particularly along the coast. This being said, southern Oman receives some respite during the khareef (the monsoon that lasts from mid-May to mid-August) that transforms Dhofar (the local name for the south) into a stunning plot of greenery.

History and government

Early history.

Oman’s colossal history (archaeological evidence suggests that parts of the country have been inhabited since the Stone Age) tracks from eras of remarkable prosperity and regional influence to self-imposed isolation, civil strife, foreign occupation and pretty much everything in between.  From as far back as 5000 BC, the land amassed great wealth due to its trade in frankincense, myrrh and, later on, copper. With this wealth, however, came foreign interest, and between the 6th century BC and the 7th century AD the country fell under the control of three Persian dynasties – the Achaemenids, Parthians and Sassanids – before becoming totally enamored with Islam. Introduced by Amr ibn al-As, a disciple of the Prophet Mohammed, the faith flourished under the Bani Nabhan dynasty for 500 years.

Recent History

At the beginning of the 16th century, keen to exploit the disunity that had spread through the country and expand their own trade routes, the Portuguese arrived. Largely content with commanding coastal sentry points and building forts (many of which still stand), they made few ventures into the interior and, as a result, were eventually ousted by conspiring inland tribes. Oman then challenged the Portuguese in East Africa and West Asia and gained numerous coastal forts and a foothold in the lucrative slave and spice trades. This allowed Oman to rebuild its wealth to great success. The Al Said dynasty assumed power in 1749 and, despite centuries of interfamilial squabbling, still holds it today.  In July 1970, having ousted his father from power in a bloodless coup, Qaboos bin Said al Said dismissed the conservative isolationist policies that had characterized his father’s rule and set the country on course for modernization and economic reform. Oman’s society has since found a balance of having a deep respect for tradition, a practical regard for technological progress and enviable health care and education systems.

Top 5 Omani souvenirs

Like the rest of the Arabian Gulf, coffee drinking is an integral part of everyday life in Oman. Notably thicker and spicier than the typical western blend, this refreshment is always offered to guests upon arrival and customarily served in graceful, long-bodied pots called dallahs. Traditionally fashioned from silver in Nizwa, bronze models are more standard these days, though no less elegant. Some really old dallahs also contain small pebbles inside the lid, which both announce the boiling of water and alert company to anyone lifting the lid to add poison! Bring back one of these as the perfect kitchen addition for those who regularly suspect their friends of plotting to kill them.

Ever had dinner guests who have stayed on long after you want to go to bed? If so, you may also like to acquire yourself an Omani incense burner – or majmar. Ornately carved silver orbs used primarily for burning frankincense, a majmar is produced when the final round of coffee has been served and – rather unsubtly – wafted around a guest’s body to signal that their departure is desired. Think of it as the equivalent of yawning loudly and saying: ‘so, should I call you a cab then?’

3. Khanjars

In times past, when it was forbidden for Omani men to wear jewelry, the shrewd among them got around this by taking to having their weaponry decorated. The result is khanjar, the curved silver daggers that now stand as the nation’s most iconic emblem. Featured on both the national flag and the one rial note, khanjars are these days mostly worn at symbolic occasions. Unsheathing it does still signify that you are seeking revenge or would like to assassinate somebody however - so don’t just whip it out to spread the garlic sauce more evenly across your kebab.

4. Henna tattoo

Henna tattooing is common among Omani women and can make for some very beautiful – and temporary – bodily decoration. The designs generally fade after five days or so, though make sure you go to a reputable artist who uses a traditional henna recipe. Some modern hennas have had chemicals and dyes added to hasten the drying process, which can result in stinging, scarring and even health risks. Be particularly wary of black henna.

5. Frankincense

If it was a good enough gift for baby Jesus, it should be good enough for Aunt Mildred.

Cell roaming connections are in place with many international phone companies, though coverage isn’t all that reliable in rural areas.

What are the toilets like in Oman?

City, Wadis and Desert

Well, I have not much more to say other that all was simply perfect. The operator was very responsive and helpful; the hotels, tours, tour guides and meals were exactly as described; and the sights were breathing. My tour guide was Yaqoob, a very experienced, attentive and nice professional that was able to give a 5 star picture of his country. I'd love to go back and see what else Oman has to offer. I loved it!

Incredible Oman Tour

Incredible Oman

I went on this adventure with my best friend in February this year and it was amazing! We absolutely loved it. Our guide, Abdulaziz was beyond knowledgeable and took so much time answering all of our group‘s questions and explaining a lot about the history of Oman. It is such a wonderful adventure because you experience so many different sceneries - From strolling through Muscat city, on to Wadi Shab and sleeping in the desert, Misfat Al abriyeen (a village in the mountains) etc. I honestly can only recommend this adventure to anyone that visits Oman, we would 100% do it again.

Excellent guide Hussein. 60 % of the positive expérience of the tour. In general I was satisfy by the tour. Well organized. Probably too short though to cover well the destination. Fortunately I extend alone 3 more nights in Muscat at the end. The negative points were: 1. too long answers to my questions before my decision to take prt on the program. it made me in the position of booking the flights at the last minute, increasing my costs. 2. The fact that I wasn not informed in advance that I joined a group that have already made the UAE tour before mine only on Oman. 3. The bus used was much too old with no suffisant climation at 35C.

Mountains, Deserts and Coast of Oman Tour

Mountains, Deserts and Coast of Oman

This tour is a good way to see Oman beyond Muscat. Lots of time in cars, but some of this, such as driving through the desert and the canyon are part of the experience - it isn't just let's drive from A to B. There was downtime/own exploring time built in which was great as you can take advantage of the beaches or pools at the different locations - very welcome as it was so hot!

Treasures of Oman 6 Days – Oman Tour Package

We really enjoyed the trip overall. We saw and experienced a lot and could ask the guides anything we wanted. They were very eager and flexible to meet our needs. We had two different guides for each of the three days. With the first one we had to organize and pay for all entrance fees and drinks ourselves. This is contrary to the agreed terms. We have spent so total safe again 55 Rial extra. The program was not really known to both guides and it was sometimes positive and sometimes negative deviated from it. So we had no Dune bashing and had to pay for the Dolphin watching (which was not organized at all) and the Camel ride. The trip was not planned wisely. For example, we arrived at the market in Nizwa when everything was over. The short city tour in Muscat on Saturday did not take place at all. Thus we never saw the big mosque. This would have been one of our highlights, which we really wanted to see! The second guide was much better educated, explained more and could answer our questions precisely. Thus, we learned much more about the country and its people. We learned from this that it is not good to book a trip through two agencies involved. We also advise against changing guides during such a short trip.

We had a great time on the Pearl of Arabia tour. The tour contained a good mix between culture, nature, landscape and sights. Our guide and driver Said showed us the best spots and took us to the most delicious restaurants. He gave us detailed information about the country, culture, cities and the sights. It was a very pleasant tour with Said with nice experiences. We can highly recommend the tour for everybody that likes pre-booked tours and want to explore Oman.

The guide Khalil did his best to brighten the tour and for that I give him credit. As for the tour itself it was somewhat ruined by the weather.

Best Time to Visit OMAN

Your weather guide to pick the best season for your tour..

cheap oman tours

Season : January and February is “winter” in Oman, and is usually considered the best time to visit. The weather around Muscat can be comfortably crisp and sunny, while the temperatures down south near Salalah are pleasantly warm, with clear skies and calm seas.

Rainfall : Rain is possible in the north these months, but occurs only rarely with less than 1 inch per month and lots of sunny days in between. However, rain is almost unheard of this time of year in the south.

Availability : January and February are peak travel months! Make sure you book a few months in advance to get preferred accommodations.

cheap oman tours

Season : Apart from Spring Break, March and April are considered a shoulder season as temperatures and humidity begin to slowly climb up, and crowds diminish.

Rainfall : Rain is possible in the north, but unlikely, with just over half an inch per month. Sunny weather can be expected every day in the south.

Availability : Apart from Spring break week (in both Europe and America), this is a wonderful time to see Oman while the weather is comfortable, rooms are at a reduced price, and most sites are uncrowded.

Keep in mind : If you want to observe the rose harvest, and rosewater distillation process in Jebel Akhdar, the last few weeks of April are usually the best time to come.

cheap oman tours

Season : Oman is mostly desert, so it makes sense that the summers are warm! Up north around Muscat and Musandam, the temperatures soar well-above what most consider comfortable, humidity is high, and crowds disappear. Down south, however, summer is an entirely different experience, as mists from the sea transform the rolling hills into something more akin to Ireland than what most imagine to be Arabia. Expect lush, dripping foliage, a fair amount of mud, and amazing springs and waterfalls. Tourists from many countries come to experience the season which means festivals and other activities abound .

Rainfall : There is the chance of rainfall in May in the areas surrounding Muscat, but almost no chance of rain at all in June or July. If you’re traveling south though, expect wet weather from the end of June to about mid August.

Availability : With the sweltering heat, you can pretty much guarantee there will always be space in the hotels up north, and at the best prices you will find all year. However, over half a million travelers (mostly from Oman and  surrounding countries) descend on Salalah Jun-August each year to experience the cooler weather, and green landscape, so book early if you want to come south this season.

Keep in mind : If you choose to take advantage of the summer prices up north, be sure to practice good hydration and sun protection.

cheap oman tours

Season : September and October are considered a shoulder season as temperatures begin to slowly cool down up north, and the weather dries up down south.

Rainfall : Rain is almost unheard of this time of year across the country.

Availability : This is a wonderful time to see Oman while the weather is comfortable, rooms are at a reduced price, and most sites are uncrowded.

Keep in mind : If you want to see any of the 500 bird species spotted in Oman, October is one of the best times to see many species on migration.

cheap oman tours

Season : The weather this time of year is comfortably warm, and dry across the country, and nights can get a bit chilly in the desert, and mountains.

Rainfall : Wet weather is very unlikely, though possible, as less than half an inch per month of rain lands on Oman this time of year.

Availability : This can be a busier in time to visit Oman, especially during holidays at the end of November and December. Be sure to book early to ensure you get your preferred accommodations.

You are visiting a land and culture where the people place great stress on modesty, particularly in the way women dress. While they are accustomed to many types of visitors, we would desire that your sensitivity and modesty would result in an enhanced level of acceptance and better communication with the people in whose land you are to be a guest.

For women, we recommend you avoid revealing or sleeveless tops. We also recommend you bring the option of loose, longer-than-the-knee pants or skirts. For men we recommend a few collared shirts and some long pants be included.

The easiest way to get local currency is to bring a bank card and withdraw cash as needed. You will be able to find Banks and ATMs in every major city. Oman is a partly cash-based society. Hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, and some more touristy businesses in Oman’s main tourist cities will accept major credit cards, but most smaller stores do not.

We recommend that you keep a ready supply of cash, including small change for taxi fare when desired and miscellaneous tipping on hand during your stay in Oman. If you do pay by credit card, we recommend that you double check the receipt before signing, as working in an unfamiliar currency can allow you to be charged more than you may expect, either intentionally or inadvertently.

If you have a member of your tour who has a serious condition, you may want to bring food with you based on the seriousness of the allergies. We also have no control over what insects you may come into contact with. If you are in any questionable circumstances, you will want to be extra careful.

There is a difference between a tour guide, and a driver in Oman.  Tour guides are licensed to give historical and cultural tours of Oman while drivers simply get you where you need to go! For our tours, however, your driver will also act as your guide throughout Oman. All our excellent drivers are licensed by the Oman Ministry of Tourism for guiding services. They act as your personal cultural ambassador and are very knowledgeable about the sights and history of the country. All of the drivers that we work with speak English, and will be able to communicate well with you. Please let us know if you need a driver to speak another language, as some options are available.

Coming to Oman during Ramadan will affect your trip. There will be less options for restaurants during lunch, as most restaurants are closed during the day. Alcohol will not be served. Shops will open up later in the day with people sleeping later after staying up to break the fast. While tourists are not expected to fast, eating and drinking in public is illegal in Oman during Ramadan. Non-Muslim guests can enjoy meals in their hotels, in certain restaurants, or out in nature away from the view of local people.  For more about how Ramadan affects your tour, read our post about  travel to Oman during Ramadan.

Oman uses the UK 3-pin electrical sockets (Type G) and outlets are 220–240 volts, so be sure to pack the necessary plug adaptors for your mobile phone, camera, laptop, or any other electronics you may travel with.

PLEASE NOTE: Travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. North American sockets supply electricity at between 110 and 120 volts, far lower than in most of the rest of the world. This being the case, North American appliances are generally built for 110-120 volts. That doesn’t mean that your specific appliance isn’t already compatible with the higher voltage or that you won’t be able to use your appliance in Oman…you will just need to make sure that your appliance will be able to facilitate 220-240 volts and that you have the appropriate adapter plug.

Traveling to Oman on a budget: how to get the best out of your trip

Camping in Oman is appealing for the self-sufficient – and the budget-conscious, too © Abie Davies / Shutterstock

Known for its rich cultural heritage, wildly beautiful landscapes and the heart-warming hospitality of its people, Oman is not a country you might associate with traveling on a budget.

After all, it shares borders with the United Arab Emirates , where neighboring Dubai is known for its pricey attractions and experiences geared towards wealthy visitors. But if you’re open to independent travel, it’s easy to go backpacking in Oman or otherwise travel around on a budget.

A first piece of advice: pick the right season for your trip  – and don’t even think of visiting in summer (June through August), even if cheap plane fares seem enticing. Given the extremely hot days, you’ll find it nearly impossible to spend them outdoors amid the country’s splendid natural beauty.

An empty paved road (with a camel crossing caution sign by the side) stretches out into the desert of Oman

If you’re already in the region, a road trip is the cheapest way to get to Oman

Many travelers want to spend a few days exploring Oman after visiting the UAE, with its numerous flight connections. But the cheapest way to get to Oman from the UAE is by car.

Tourists can enter Oman through five land-border crossings with the UAE, of which two are in Abu Dhabi and one each in Dubai, Sharjah  and Ras Al Khaimah . Since the borders are sometimes temporarily closed or open only to residents, it’s best to contact Oman’s Ministry of Tourism  before you set out.

The drive from Dubai to Muscat takes just over 4 hours. You should have no problems entering Oman through the border checkpoints as long as you meet the COVID-19 vaccination and PCR test requirements . Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival for Oman ; otherwise, you can apply online in advance.

You’ll need to inform your car rental company in Dubai about your plans to drive across the border, check that the insurance coverage includes Oman and obtain a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) – a document that states that you have the rental company’s explicit permission to drive the car across the border to Oman.

Spend time outdoors

There’s a good chance your trip will begin in  Muscat – and it’s worth spending a day or two visiting famous sights such as the Mutrah Souq , Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque , Al Alam Palace and the Royal Opera House Muscat . Unlike its Gulf neighbors, however, Oman’s true highlights lie outside of town, in its extraordinary landscapes.

Top things to do in Oman include the craggy limestone peaks of the Hajar Mountains , wadis (valleys) with turquoise pools and farms, cliff-top villages in Jebel Akhdar and the rocky Ad Dimaniyat islands surrounded by waters full of coral reefs and tropical fish. Luckily, most of these places are free to visit or cost as little as OR5 (US$15) per day where a permit is required.

Skip the tours and travel independently

Even if it’s your first time visiting this part of the Middle East, it’s easy to avoid group tours and travel around Oman without a guide, both of which can be add up quickly. Depending on your interests and how many days you’re visiting, you’ll have no trouble planning an itinerary focused on nature, adventure, culture – or a little bit of it all.

The roads connecting the main towns are in excellent condition and have signs in English. Should you find yourself lost or needing assistance, Omanis are likely to go out of their way to help.

Along the way, if you’re interested in activities that are best done with a guide, such as the climbing the  Jebel Shams summit, hiking through  Wadi Shab  or diving in the  Ad Dimaniyat Islands , you can book a day trip or excursion so that you get the most value out of the experience while still allowing yourself the flexibility (and budget-friendliness) of independent travel.

Pack a tent and sleeping bag

Wild camping is free and permitted nearly everywhere on public land in Oman. The country is full of incredibly scenic spots, from white-sand beaches and plateaus with breathtaking canyon views to quiet fishing villages – all beautiful places to pitch your tent and sleep under the stars.

Camping in Oman is safe, which is why it’s also popular with tourists from around the Gulf countries. It isn’t just for tourists, either: many families in Oman often go camping, especially during the cooler months from October to March. If there’s a group camping nearby, don’t be surprised if one or two members (always men) come over to talk, offer tea or even freshly caught fish roasted on a bonfire. Hospitality is a way of Omani life.

Since it can get quite chilly while camping overnight and conditions might be windy on the beaches, bring layers to keep warm. There is a risk of flash floods in the wadis, especially after rain, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and warnings when and where you decide to set up camp.

Camping isn’t allowed in nature reserves like Jabal Samhan and the Ad Dimaniyat Islands without a permit. Additionally, you’re not allowed to camp at the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve or on the Ad Dimaniyat Islands from May through October to protect nesting turtles.

Don’t expect official campgrounds with toilets and showers – camping in Oman is for the self-sufficient. Tents, rooftop tents and camping equipment can be rented from operators like Nomad Tours and Active Oman or bought at supermarkets such as Carrefour and Lulu Hypermarket in Muscat.

Assess your rental car options

Given the limited public transportation in Oman coupled with affordable fuel costs (OR0.25 or US$0.64 per liter), renting a car will afford you the most cost-effective way to get around Oman. Keep in mind, though, that rental costs can vary widely depending upon the type of car you pick.

A 4WD offers maximum convenience and flexibility, allowing access to remote mountain villages and the desert, but it’s much pricier at OR23–96 (US$60–250) per day, compared with renting a 2WD sedan at OR10–20 (US$26–52) per day. To save on costs, consider whether you really need a 4WD.

If you plan on doing a few guided trips or staying overnight at places such as Sharqiya Sands or Jebel Akhdar, a sedan should suffice as most operators and hotels can pick you up from the nearest paved-road-accessible town.

Choose locally owned accommodations

While you’ll find plenty of international hotels in Oman even beyond the big cities, if you want to save on costs, pick hotel apartments and locally owned guesthouses instead. Though not as fancy, hotel apartments are spacious and air-conditioned, come with kitchens you can cook in and include modern amenities like TVs and wi-fi.

Smaller guesthouses are located in villages and housed in traditional stone dwellings, which means they have loads of character. You’ll also enjoy delicious homestyle meals. For a stellar example of the genre, make a reservation at  Misfah Guest House  in Misfat Al Abriyyin.

Sun hits golden sand against a blue sky on the geometric formations of the Sharqiya Sands dune

There’s a desert camp for everyone, but book well in advance

Many travelers visiting Oman for the first time are keen to spend a night at a desert camp at Sharqiya Sands – and rightly so. Few other experiences compare to watching the sun disappear behind rose-gold dunes and thousands of stars light up the night sky. Not surprisingly, they’re very popular during the peak season (November to March), so even if you otherwise love spontaneity, try to book your desert camp stay well in advance of your trip for the possibility of getting a better deal on rates.

Oman has a wide range of desert camps to choose from, so you’re almost certain to find something that suits your budget. The more luxurious ones, such as the Desert Nights Camp (beginning at OR75 or US$195 per night), have modern, air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms and showers, and even tented villas with private pools. At cheaper camps such as Bidiyah Desert Camp (beginning at OR29 or US$75 per night), you can still have a great experience even with simpler amenities and food.

You can eat well on a budget

Outside of restaurants in international hotels, eating out in Oman isn’t too expensive. At cafeterias, coffee shops and small family-run restaurants, you’ll find dishes from throughout the Middle East that are both delicious and easy on the wallet. For an affordable breakfast or snack, head to neighborhood bakeries and choose from sandwiches, savory patties, croissants and cakes.

Thanks to a huge migrant population from South Asia, you’ll also find hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving affordable Indian, Pakistani and Nepali dishes like chicken gravy with paratha, biryani and momos.

If you’re staying at a hotel apartment with a kitchen, shop for groceries at supermarkets and cook your meals to keep costs down.

The 6 Best Oman Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Oman is a Middle Eastern country located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and is bordered to the northwest by the United Arab Emirates, to the west by Saudi Arabia, and the southwest by Yemen.

This is not your usual country, and you will see why we say so as we dive deeper into the article. We will talk about the six best tours to discover the best of Oman easily, but before that, let’s get a glimpse of auspicious Oman.

A bit about its diverse landscape and natural beauty: Oman has unbelievable natural treasures ranging from the rugged Hajar Mountains in the north to the rolling dunes of the Empty Quarter in the south to its very diverse bird collection that seems to have come from three different continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is a secret paradise for bird lovers and watchers looking for new species now and then.

But one of its best natural treasures is undoubtedly its people; Omanis are one of the most peaceful people in the world, and this is evident in the silent nature of most cities in the country, if not all of them. Do not be surprised when you are greeted with a bowl of fresh dates and an archy smile upon your arrival at your hotel.

Unlike many other Arab countries, Oman is gifted with miles of pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic desert landscapes. It is like a perfect combination of the dunes of Dubai, the marvelous beaches of Mexico and the giant mountains of Japan. That’s a full package and even more!

In its capital city of Muscat, you will find charming Old Towns, with winding alleys and historic buildings, as well as a bustling market that sells everything from spices and textiles to gold and silver jewelry.

One of Oman’s most famous attractions that you will find so interesting and soothing to watch is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the heart of its capital city. This mosque is one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of over 20,000 worshippers. Well, this, to some extent, is not a surprise for a country that has 85% of its 5 million population as Muslims.

With all that we have said so far, we have not yet touched the history and culture of Oman. This ship-makers country is believed to have been one of the oldest habitats of mankind, with archaeological proof dating 100,000 years ago.

Yep, didn’t we tell you this is not your usual country? You can explore the city’s many museums and art galleries, including the Bait Al Zubair Museum and the Oman National Museum, to learn more about the history of the country in much detail.

And we can go on and on and on…

But we will leave the rest for your discovery and encounter. How about that?

For now, let’s tell you the biggest secret sauce to getting the most out of your trip to this tranquil country. The best way to get Oman’s deepest and most authentic experiences is to get on a group tour with friends and family, a partner, or even alone.

Experienced tour guides will lead your way to the best places, eventually giving you the best experiences you might have missed otherwise. From trouble-free preparations to comfortable explorations with your highly knowledgeable guides leading the way, you will surely have an epic time in Oman.

Without further ado, here are the six best tours to discover Oman with ease.

We imagine your journey will begin with a relaxing swim and end at the enthralling Beach of Fins. If you miss swimming at Bimmah, why not try again here or walk along the long white sandy beach? The crystal clear waves of the Indian Ocean will make you want to dive in. The beach is ideal for enjoyable activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. You can also try your hand at those.

We are confident that you will enjoy your time at the beach, but now it is time to go on to the wonderful Wadi Shab. The next morning, you’ll have the chance to tour Sur, where you’ll be transported back to the age of the Arabian Dhow Factory. Traditional wooden Dhows are being built, and the historic strongholds are a true tribute to Oman’s rich history and culture.

Muscat City tour with Hajer

"Thank you very much Hajer, we had a wonderful time with you and truly enjoyed your company! We were two adults with two children 7 and 9 and Hajer made it fun and vey interesting for the whole family. She showed us beautiful spots and introduced us to delicious local dishes. We felt very safe with her as a driver and guide and can highly recommend her tour for families with kids of any age. Of course our two boys loved being driven around in a Maserati, listening to some trendy music as well. An overall amazing experience wich we can highly recommend to anyone. Thanks 🙏🏼 "

local Hajer

Excellent private Muscat Tour!

"We booked a private half day tour in muscat. She picked us up in our hotel and we loved the big, clean and beautiful car! Hajer is extremely friendly, she knows the city very well, her english is brilliant, she's a very safe driver and a great photographer too ;) We felt very comfortable and she even bought a delicious coffee and typical local snacks for us and this during Ramadan! We really appreciated this generous gift to us and we would always book her again. We had a great tour and we can highly recommend her!"

guest Nina

A must-book Muscat tour guide!

"I booked the Full coverage Muscat city tour with Hajer as my guide. I felt like I was chatting to a new friend showing me her home city while telling me the cultural history of Muscat's buildings, structures and landscapes. Among the must see sights Hajer took me to, I got to see things that aren't featured in travel guides or YouTube videos. Hajer was also able to tailor the experience to my personal preferences which was fantastic. This tour was the perfect way to orientate myself to this wonderful city and I was able to make the most out of my remaining time here. I highly recommend engaging Hajer for your Muscat experience - you won't be disappointed. "

guest Tin

A perfect start to our Omani Holidays :-)

"The perfect start with our personal guide Hajer already began before our departure to Oman: We (a couple from Switzerland, age around 35 years) spontaneously (approx. 10 days before) decided to go on a tour of Oman (8 days, only northern part). A lot of the tour was already planned but according to the short preparation time, we still had many unanswered questions and unplanned details in our tour. This was so much welcome and appreciated 😊 Hajer not only answered all of our questions patiently via “With Locals Chat” and gave us tips, but also spoke to me on the phone. This previous experience already felt like visiting a friend when we arrived. She also gave us the crucial tip to decide our hotel in Muscat, which we didn't regret 😀 Since we had a long overnight flight with a stop in Istanbul and only arrived in Muscat at 3am, we wanted to get some sleep before going on the city tour with Hajer on the first day. This was absolutely no problem for Hajer. She was completely flexible right up to the last minute, so that we were able to get some sleep and have breakfast at the hotel before she picked us up. Another pleasant surprise was the car she picked us up and drove us around. I don't want to say any more about the car, you'll see for yourself. At least for my husband this was also part of the experience😉 The tour itself was very exciting and varied: Over all, there was a lot of driving through the city. But this is due to the city itself, because it is huge and the relatively few sights are scattered far and wide. As Hajer is a very experienced driver we felt always secure in the city traffic and it gave us a good foresight to our own driving experience with the rental car. With Hajer we could see the most important sights of the City within really less of time (5h), as she knows the routes and places. We would have been lost, if we needed to do it on ourselves by car, by foot it is nearly impossible. Beside the main sights like Sultans Palace, Mosque (depends on time/only morning), Opera House, Matrah and Matrah Souk, Hajer showed us some local places and didn’t forget our bellies. So we made some stops in between at a Halwa Sweets store (kind of preferred Omani sweets), where you could try a spoon of every pastry for free and also have some Omani coffee. We also stopped at a typical «Omani drive in» to have some Karak (black tea, milk and saffron – absolutely delicious) and some kind of Samosa and some typical bread with cream cheese and honey. What Hajer introduced us as well, is the Omani culture, of driving by, stay in the car and let you deliver all the things to your car window, even if its not looking like a drive-in 😊 That knowledge saved us a lot of embarrassing moments on the route and also so time. After all these things, Hajer brought us up to the Mutrah Fort, where we could perfectly see the sun going down over the city and the Marina. Just magic 😊 Last but not least we went to the Souk. From my before «Souk-Experiences» the walk through was a little bit too fast, but for my husband it was perfect, as he does not really like shopping. So, if you like Souks and all the Shopping and bargaining the tour is a first and good overview, but you need to come again by your own or need to advise Hajer, that you need more time. Then, she will be a perfect shopping-advisor, as he knows the prices and is not afraid to argue with the vendors. After a very impressive tour of Muscat, I asked Hajer about our plan to make a Ad-Dimaniyat-Island tour the next day - we didn’t book it in advance, as we wanted her recommendations. Right away she called a friend, which told us that no tours will be happen the next three days according to the wind. So we needed to skip our plan and change the route. Together with Hajer we decided to go to Wadi Shab the next day what was planned for our return day to Muscat on the last day of the tour. But our renting car wasn’t ready, because we booked it just for tomorrow. Hajer managed to get us the same renting car from the same firm we prebooked for one day earlier for the same daily-prices. Then there was the next problem: I had some trekking shoes for the Wadis but no water shoes. I wanted to buy them in Switzerland in advance, but as there was no Season, I couldn’t do it at the store in this short pre-booking time. And we also didn’t have the time to go shopping for these on the first day in Muscat. So well, Hajer showed once again her heart and the truly amazing kind of Omani hospitality: She offered me her own water shoes, to take them with me to have the Wadi experiences, and to leave them back at the hotel reception, where she will get them back after. If this is isn’t true commitment to hospitality… I don’t know, what else could be…. 😍 Over all: You will see that Hajer is practiced to do this kind of tours and feels like a professional. But you can always customize your tour by telling your wishes to Hajer or ask some questions. You will never have the feeling (like in other countries) that it’s kind of a selling (instead it is the total difference, as Hajer pays what she offers). And, it is not her main job: She did a lot of previous works as a Consultant for Sports (FIFA, WM Bahrain, etc.) and she still has this main job. So you can really feel that she does this sightseeing tours by heart. So, long story short: We can only recommend Hajer for your City-Sightseeing in Muscat for the fullest. It will be perfect. 💕 Lots of Love. Larissa & Olav"

guest Larissa

Hajer is AMAZING

"We started out in the morning when Hajer picked us up from our hotel. From there we started hitting the sites one by one with Hajer providing local insights and stopping here and there for local treats (karak chai with saffron!). Her knowledge and company made the trip even more interesting than had we just gone on our own. This was a great way to see the city sites and to make a friend for life. Thank you Hajer!!!!"

guest Hamaad

What a cool guide!

"I really enjoyed my day with Hajer. She was super flexible, thoughtful and made me feel like cruising around Muscat with an old friend. As a female solo-traveller I especially enjoyed experiencing Muscat with a woman. Hajer is a true local, knowing everything and everyone in this city. Highly recommended! "

guest Anette

Felt Like a Local!

"We had a fanatstic afternoon with Hajer. She made us feel like we were old friends just arrived in town. She showed us her favorite places and answered all of our questions about life in Muscat. We took a scenic boat ride from a small beach through a stone arch and looking up at hidden beaches. She also shared some of her favorite cliff-side views of the shoreline. We grabbed coffee and snacks and went to see sunset on a nearby village beach with kids playing nearby. There's too much to share it all! It was a magical day and we'll remember it as a highlight of our visit to Oman. "

guest Laura

Magical day with Yousuf

"We had such an incredible day with Yousuf. He was so knowledgable and great fun. On top of all that, he managed to save a boy from drowning at the Wadi! He’s a bit of a super hero! After the wadi trip we went out into the desert. This was such a special trip. He drove us over the dunes which was such fun and a big adrenaline rush, then set up camp on top of one of the dunes so that we could watch the sunset which was just magical. He went over and above to make our day special and I can’t recommend him highly enough Thanks Yousuf "

guest Jo

Highlights of Muscat

"My friend and I loved having Hajer as our guide. As two females with little knowledge about Oman, it was a small comfort to have another female guide in a country we visited for the first time! She was able to customize our tour slightly to tailor to our interests. Oman is also a very driving friendly city for tourists, but it was nice having a local who knew all the best routes. She also was able to bargain for us at the souk when buying spices. Highly recommend you book with Hajer! We'll be visiting Oman again."

Oman Travel Guide: Ultimate 10-day Travel Itinerary

Oman Travel Guide: Ultimate 10-day Travel Itinerary

Oman is a country at the border of the United Arab Emirates. It’s a 1-hour flight from Dubai or a 9-hour flight from Amsterdam and brings you a real Arab experience. Oman has countless sand dunes, green ravines filled with palm trees, huge mountain ranges, emerald green natural pools, and a massive part of the country is located on the seaside. Read this complete Oman travel guide.

Oman is really well developed; the majority of the people speak English and are modern in their way of thinking. Infrastructure is one of the best out there, but they don’t want to be the next Dubai. The buildings that are built have the original Arab look with a modern touch. If that wasn’t convincing enough, the country is voted as one of the cleanest and safest countries in the world. This 10-day route will take you around the best highlights of Oman.

Oman is a huge country, and to see the entire country, you will probably need 2-3 weeks. We narrowed it down to a 10-day self-driving route. This is one of the best countries to drive around yourself. The infrastructure is perfect, the people are super friendly, and petrol is affordable.

Day 1 – 2: Explore Muscat

Muscat is Oman’s capital city and home to many expats. It hosts the impressive Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Muttrah Souq, and the Royal Opera House.

Sultan Qaboos Mosque

The Sultan Qaboos Mosque is Oman’s most important spiritual site. This architectural masterpiece opened in 2001. It’s required for both men and women to wear long sleeve tops and long pants to the ankle. For women, bring a scarf to cover your hair.

The mosque’s entrance is free. It is open to non-muslims every day from 8 AM to 11 AM except Friday. Friday is prayers day.

What to wear in Oman

Oman is very modern and open in what you wear. They don’t give you a set of clothing rules once you enter the country. It is respectful to always cover up your upper body, shoulders, and wear shorts or skirts over your knees.

Again, Omani people are very modern and they will only really ask you to cover up when you are on a religious site.

A person stands surrounded by flood water caused by heavy rains, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday.

Dubai floods: Chaos, queues and submerged cars after UAE hit by record rains

Passengers report being stranded in the desert city as the international hub struggles in the wake of unusually heavy rain

Don’t blame cloud seeding for the Dubai floods

Dubai is wrestling with the aftermath of extraordinary torrential rains that flooded the desert city, with people describing harrowing stories of spending the night in their cars, and air passengers enduring chaotic scenes at airports.

Up to 259.5mm (10.2in) of rain fell on the usually arid country of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, the most since records began 75 years ago . The state-run WAM news agency called the rains on Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949”.

As the sun returned on Wednesday, along with it came stories of people stuck in cars and offices through an arduous night.

“It was one of the most horrific situations I had ever experienced,” said one Dubai resident in his 30s, who did not want to give his name, after his 15-minute commute turned into a 12-hour ordeal on flooded roads.

'I want to go home': passengers stranded by Dubai extreme floods – video

At Dubai’s airport, one of the busiest for international travel, with nearly every flight repeatedly delayed, Emirates passengers were told to stay away “unless absolutely necessary”.

Frustration from those already there began to build.

A large crowd formed at a connections desk, clapping and whistling in protest as they waited for information.

“They are completely lost, it’s complete chaos – no information, nothing,” fumed one passenger, who did not want to be named, after a 12-hour wait, Agence France-Presse reported.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. One couple called the situation “absolute carnage”. They spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalise critical speech. “You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the Metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport.”

The BBC reported other passengers were diverted to Dubai World Central Airport – also known as Al Maktoum airport – telling the broadcaster they had been “living on duty free” and that water was in short supply.

One furious British traveller told PA Media that once his flight was diverted to Dubai World Central, he had not been given any food or water either. “It’s just been an absolute disaster. We’re stuck here and seven hours without a single update is inexcusable.”

Emirates, Dubai’s flagship airline, posted on X on Wednesday night: “Customers should expect delays with departures and arrivals” and that while some passengers had been able to get to their destinations “we are aware that many are still waiting to get on flights”.

Cars sit abandoned in a flooded street

The airline cancelled all check-ins and announced that it would continue to suspend services until Thursday morning, apologising for the disruptions. Those on FlyDubai, Emirates’ low-cost sister airline, also faced delays.

Dubai airport posted on X early on Thursday that flights had resumed from Terminal 1 but urged people to travel to the airport only if they had a confirmed booking, as flights continued to be “delayed and disrupted”.

Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, acknowledged the issues with flooding on Wednesday. “It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye.

Neighbouring countries were also hit by heavy rains earlier this week, including Oman, where 20 people have died, including 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult.

Soldiers were deployed to badly affected areas of the sultanate, which rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian peninsula, to evacuate people trapped by flooding.

Schools will stay closed in Dubai until next week, authorities said, underscoring the difficulty of the clean-up.

In an unusual direct intervention, the UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered “authorities to quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused”, official media said.

The president also gave orders for affected families to be transferred to safe locations, said a statement carried by the WAM news agency.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, wrote on X about “efforts being made by teams of citizens and residents that continue day and night” as the city’s media office posted video overlayed with dramatic music of officials conferring in groups and water pumping appearing to take place in the background.

Photos too were posted of what it said showed water flooding into desert areas.

Similar scenes were visible around the Gulf state including in Sharjah, in neighbouring Dubai, where people waded through main streets and paddled around on makeshift boats.

At least one person was killed in the flooding. A 70-year-old man who was swept away in his car in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the country’s seven emirates, according to police.

The UAE government announced that remote working for most federal government employees had been extended into another day because of the impact.
