A London Underground sign

As more Londoners return to venues and offices around the capital, surely that’ll mean a few more bus and Tube rides, too.

Perfect timing! On March 1, Transport for London ’s fares will see the biggest price hike in a decade …

While the (average) 4.8% rise in ticket costs may be inevitable due to the pandemic, it’s useful to know how much you’ll be shelling out for your daily bus journey or Tube trip going forward.

Here are the current prices – and what they’re going up to.

How much does the London Tube cost?

Right now, a single Tube journey in one zone costs £2.40. By March 1, the cost will rise by 10p to £2.50.

How much you’ll need to pay for a single fare or ticket really depends on where you’re going, though. TfL has a single fare finder which will tell you the cost of your planned journey.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Daily caps will rise, too, but again how much by will depend on what zones you need to travel through – and whether you need to travel Anytime or during Off-Peak hours.

For Daily Anytime caps, the change will be as follows:

Zone 1 only: £7.40 currently, rising to £7.70

Zone 1 – 2: £7.40 currently, rising to £7.70

Zone 1 – 3: £8.70 currently, rising to £9

Weekly caps (covering Monday to Sunday) will also rise, going up to:

Zone 1 only: £37 currently, rising to £38.60

Zone 1 – 2: £37 currently, rising to £38.60

Zone 1 – 3: £43.50 currently, rising to £45.20

Zone 1 – 4: £53.20 currently , rising to £55.20

Zone 1 – 5: £63.30 currently, rising to £65.70

Zone 1 – 6: £67.70 currently, rising to £70.30.

The more zones you need to include, the more chance there is your daily/weekly cap will be higher. It can also vary depending on whether or not you need to travel through Zone 1.

How much are London bus fares?

Two London buses going to Liverpool Street and Edmonton Green

Bus tickets for a single journey are set to rise from the current price of £1.55 to £1.60.

The daily cap, covering journeys happening in the space of 24 hours, will rise by 30p. It’s currently £4.65, and from March 1 will be £4.95.

And the weekly cap is going up to £23.30 – which is £1.40 more than the existing £21.90.

These price rises will also apply to the caps on London’s network of trams, too.

Fortunately, the Hopper Fare will still be in place, meaning you can change to another bus or tram within an hour of tapping in, and only get charged for one journey.

Full list of fare hikes from March 1 across bus and Tube network

  • Cost of pay-as-you-go Tube journeys within zone one will go up by 10p to £2.50.

London Public Transport Journey Planners

These are the best apps and tools to plan a journey by public transport in London. We recommend using the options listed below instead of Google to plan a journey.

Citymapper is the most comprehensive public transport planning app for London.

It’s available online or as a free app for ios or android . The online version is now rather limited. The app is much better.

The route planner shows all transport options including cycling, walking and local trains.

The adult Pay as you go Oyster card/contactless fares for each journey are also shown. This make it easy to find the cheapest route.

Transport for London’s TfL Go app is a sleek design and easy to use . It’s the easiest app to find and live departures for underground trains and buses.

It also has a route planner showing options for

  • fastest route
  • an alternative route (usually bus)

Select ‘Status’ for delay information. You are then able to see if there are any problems on a particular train or underground line.

It defaults to an excellent live tube map, which finds your closest tube station. Click on the underground station, then the name of the station to get the times of the next tube trains.

Click on ‘bus stops’ to see times of the next buses from bus stops near you.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t give fare information. But it’s recommended if you don’t need to know the fare.

Transport for London’s online journey planner

Transport for London’s online Journey Planner shows the quickest way from A to B.

It’s possible to choose bus/tube/train only routes. It also gives you the Pay as you go Oyster peak/contactless and off-peak fares.

Do bear in mind that the default is the quickest route, which is not always the cheapest. For example, to Heathrow Airport:

  • under ‘Edit preferences’ deselect ‘National Rail’ to exclude the expensive Heathrow Express train.
  • Deselect ‘Elizabeth line’ if you want to exclude that as well.

Early morning or late-night journeys

To be somewhere at a specific time, especially if it’s in the morning or late at night, use the TfL Journey Planner

Mobility issues

If you have mobility issues, you can narrow down your search options to find the best route with:

  • Escalators but not stairs
  • Stairs but not escalators
  • Step-free access to platforms
  • Full step-free access

If you just need a tube map and don’t want to use an app, download a pdf tube map to your device.

Customers using contactless payment cards across London can now conveniently view their journey history and check or top-up payments on the go…

app

Customers using contactless payment cards in London can now view their journey history on the go following the latest update to the free Transport for London (TfL) Oyster and contactless app .

Half of all Tube and rail pay-as-you-go journeys in London are made using contactless payment cards or mobile devices. More than 17 million pay-as-you-go journeys a week are made across public transport services; providing value for money, flexibility and convenience.

The success of contactless payment in London is leading more cities to introduce the technology as a convenient method of paying for travel.

Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer at Transport for London, said: “We’re delighted that so many Londoners have already downloaded our app, making it easier to check journey history and top-up on the go. This latest update follows feedback from customers and is part of our work to make travelling in London simple and convenient for everyone.”

TfL has updated the free app – available to download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store – to enable customers to view their journey and payment history and see if they have any ‘incomplete’ journeys. Customers can use their smartphone to quickly add pay-as-you-go credit or season tickets to their Oyster card.

Since the app launched in September 2017, more than 800,000 downloads have been made.

Customers can add their contactless payment card to an online account, personalise cards or devices and hide features that are not required. New features on the app illustrate updated maps and design changes to improve the customer experience.

Chief Executive of London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Colin Stanbridge, said: “We support any improvements to make London’s public transport network easier, cheaper and more attractive to use: in doing so, benefitting commuters, tourists and the economy as a whole. Using contactless cards to travel has made great strides in this area and this update to the app would appear to take these changes a stage further.”

TfL is now working to introduce further improvements to make all the functions of the app available to customers using concessionary cards such as Zip and Student photocards. Future changes are expected to make it easier in requesting refunds.
