Recapping Stop One of the Freeride World Tour 2024 in Verbier, Switzerland

freeride world tour final verbier

We witnessed the true power of strategic improvisation this weekend. With poor snow causing a worthy cancelation of the Freeride World Tour’s (FWT) original First Stop in Baqueira Beret, Spain, the team was left with a tough choice: should they bag the first stop and move on to round two or do you pack up and move? Being the stellar team that they are, the FWT organizers decided to rally the troops and head for familiar territory; Verbier, Switzerland. As we saw on multiple different runs, the snowpack was still quite punchy in Verbier, with skiers often being thrown a bit on their landings. Riders had to adapt to the conditions, but with good coverage and very durable snow, we got ourselves the show we had been waiting for. The Freeride World Tour is back!

In the Ski Women’s field, there may have been more air time than snow time. Our top three women logged some serious flight miles on several features throughout the course. One of the American favorites, Molly Armanino, grabbed third place with a creative line that took her into fresh snow on the looker’s left side. She found a rather snowboard-influenced line that had been ridden by a few of the boarders, but she made sure to put her signature touch on it. Among other drops, Armanino found a technical double that required a left turn in the middle. High roller in the building! 21-year-old Manon Loschi of France secured second place. The young gun qualified last year but was forced to sit out due to injury. She clearly wanted to start the season strong and showed no sign of reserve. Three massive cliffs combined with powerful turns at speed earned her a 94.00, 14 points better than the next closest Armanino. It was Poland’s Zuzanna Witych who took the day, however. Her strength was on display as she strong-armed her way through the course, even gapping Loschi’s bomb hole on her final air. Shoutout to Justine Dufour Lapointe for her giant backflip. That soft base we mentioned earlier threw her for a loop as she put the trick to her feet and was greeted with a front punch tumble. We can’t wait to see her stomp it next time.

“I have no words; I am so surprised. I loved this line from the first time I saw the face, but I didn’t expect it to be that big. I never imagined the scenario of leading the rankings, and I really want to keep pushing myself. I love Verbier – it’s such a mecca for freeriding and home to so many good riders, and so to win here is just mind-blowing!” – Zuzanna Witych, 2024 Verbier Pro winner

In the Ski Men’s field, we were treated to a stacked podium, as one could expect. The roster was 22 contestants deep, each one posing a true threat. Shout to Japanese ripper Tenra Katsuno who dropped first and held the hot seat for quite a while, eventually finishing fourth. We can’t wait to see more from him. It was veteran Kirstofer Turdell who delivered a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it type run to grab third place. The Swedish stud is no stranger to massive airs and controlling speed like none other. He lined up a couple of huge cliffs and capped the run-off with a lofty backflip. Style guru Finn Bilous of New Zealand snuck into second place, beating our Turdell by one whole point. His freestyle background blended with a love for big mountains makes him such an entertaining skier to watch. Bilous stuck a giant step down 3 as well as a laid-out flat spin, linking both tricks back to back off neighboring features. Max Hitzig took home first place. In his second season on the tour, the German riding out of Austria brought the heat. He floored it into everything he eyed up, stomping a large right 3 without hesitation! Of course, we’ll dish out some FREESKIER bonus points for his beautiful kosak to end the run.

“It was a really special and technical run. Normally, I like flatter terrain, but I enjoyed the steep slopes here, it makes you concentrate. I wanted to start with a solid run this year, and my plan is to have fun this season and try my best. I look forward especially to the new stop in Georgia.” – Max Hitzig, 2024 Verbier Pro winner

Below, you’ll find the podium results, winning runs and a full photo gallery of the event.

Mountainwatch | Press Release

Verbier, Switzerland – March 23, 2021: Among one of the strongest rosters in Xtreme Verbier history, the 2021 kings and queens of freeride were crowned today . Due to snow conditions, athletes in all categories started at 3,020m (instead of 3,300m), but that certainly didn’t stop them lighting up the lookers-right of the Bec des Rosses – leaving judges and viewers in awe and wanting more. With 15,000 points up for grabs for first place (instead of 10,000 with the other stops), athletes were under even more pressure to perform for the honour of lifting the FWT world champion trophy.

Here’s what went down in the 25th edition of the Xtreme Verbier:

SNOWBOARD WOMEN

FWT21 World Champion: Marion Haerty (FRA)

Marion Haerty (FRA – 1st Place) completed an astonishing perfect season in FWT21 – the first athlete ever to do so – taking a win at every event. She put down a fluid run with three solid airs taken with her characteristic confidence. Katie Anderson (USA – 2nd Place) produced an express line for her first time on the Bec, with a couple of drops and a method grab to lock in second place. Erika Vikander (USA – 3rd Place) showed off some technical riding in the steeps and completed a fluid run top-to-bottom.

“I don’t think about the record or the awards. I just think about how I like to snowboard. I want to push myself and the level further, and maybe that’s why I won today. I’m not in a competition against the other girls, only against myself.”

— Marion Haerty , FWT21 Xtreme Verbier Winner

FWT21 overall rankings in snowboard women:

  • Marion Haerty — 35 000 pts
  • Katie Anderson — 26 400 pts
  • Erika Vikander — 24 000 pts
  • Manuela Mandl — 20 800 pts

FWT21 World Champion: Elisabeth Gerritzen (SUI)

Hometown hero, Elisabeth Gerritzen (SUI – 1st Place), earned her second Xtreme Verbier Crown and the FWT Title with a huge performance on the Bec. Elisabeth put herself straight into a precarious zone and made the most of it with two big airs up top. She then charged the rest of her line at speed and finished with a massive air. Reigning FWT champion, Arianna Tricomi (ITA – 2nd Place), ripped a fluid line with multiple features.

She started with a smooth drop in the steeps and followed this with a double into a technical zone with a mandatory air to exit, then a 360 before the finish line to put the icing on her run. Hedvig Wessel (NOR – 3rd Place) went straight into the guts of the gnar and chose a super technical line incorporating multiple airs in the steepest zone of the face.

“I was semi-happy about my run, but it didn’t feel as good as my line in 2019. It was nervous moments waiting for the overall rankings to show up. I knew it would be tight, and I didn’t think it was in my reach to take the overall win, so it was really unexpected and an amazing surprise… Knowing that no women skier has ever won twice on the Bec, it became my goal, so I’m stoked to make it happen and to feel comfortable in the steep terrain.”

— Elisabeth Gerritzen , FWT21 Xtreme Verbier Winner

FWT21 overall rankings in ski women:

  • Elisabeth Gerritzen — 27 620 pts
  • Hedvig Wessel — 27 600 pts
  • Zuzanna Witych — 22 800 pts
  • Juliette Willmann — 20 915 pts
  • Tracy Chubb — 18 945 pts

SNOWBOARD MEN

FWT21 World Champion: Victor De Le Rue (FRA)

Victor De Le Rue (FRA – 1st Place) made short work of the Bec, sending a full-throttle line with zero hesitation to take the Verbier Crown and the FWT Title. Victor first pointed a huge double drop and linked this with a floaty 360 straight into another cliff at warp speed. Cody Bramwell (GBR – 2nd Place) put down another dominant performance with a solid line. He started with two airs in the steeps up top, then linked a risky 360 above some serious consequences into a big air with no hesitation.

If this wasn’t enough, a laid-out backflip off the bottom wind-lip secured the second position. Blake Moller (USA – 3rd Place) found an innovative line and sent a wild 360 into the exposure then pinned the rest of the face in full control, finishing with a floaty air to lock in the podium.

“It was a weird beginning to my winter with a broken shoulder and all the resorts closed in France, meaning I didn’t ride much. I had two bad runs in Andorra, then went to Austria wanting to do a run I was stoked about, which put me in the first place. That boosted me up, and in Verbier I tried to stay in the same state of mind, forget about the competition and just do the run. And it went perfect!” — Victor De Le Rue , FWT21 Xtreme Verbier Winner

FWT21 overall rankings in snowboard men:

  • Victor De Le Rue — 31 400 pts
  • Blake Moller — 27 600 pts
  • Cody Bramwell — 27 120 pts
  • Camille Armand — 18 240 pts
  • Nils Mindnich — 17 715 pts

FWT21 World Champion: Kristofer Turdell (SWE)

Kristofer Turdell (SWE – 1st Place) completed his season goal and dream of winning the Xtreme Verbier with an epic display of his strength and big mountain dominance. Kristofer charged a crispy clean line, which featured multiple airs up top, a picture-perfect cliff in the middle and a backflip to finish. Former Xtreme Verbier Champion, Wadeck Gorak (FRA – 2nd Place) unveiled a line loaded with airs and huge tricks. Wadeck started with a big double in the steeps, linked this with a 360 and finished with two trademark backflips to claim the podium.

Aymar Navarro (SPA – 3rd Place) proved he is one of the most powerful freeriders around, sniffing out the biggest double on the face and sending it to the moon.

“I don’t know how to describe it. The excitement and nervousness you build up before the competition makes it hard to sleep and eat in the morning. Then, suddenly, it’s over. I over-planned my line but did a second face inspection this morning and altered it. I am really happy to link this line together.” — Kristofer Turdell , FWT21 Xtreme Verbier Winner

FWT21 overall rankings in ski men:

  • Kristofer Turdell — 31 720 pts
  • Ross Tester — 30 800 pts
  • Carl Regnér Eriksson — 24 320 pts

Freeride World Tour Aims For Friday Yeti Xtreme Verbier Finals Start Date

T he Freeride World Tour is planning to host its final event—the Yeti Xtreme Verbier—this Friday should weather conditions cooperate.

"After today's call with our meteorologist, Friday still appears to be the best option, with only very low winds and a thin cloud layer forecasted," the FWT wrote in an Instagram update shared yesterday afternoon.

Beyond Friday, the FWT's forecaster anticipates heavy snow will blow into Verbier, Switzerland. On Monday, the weather should clear, but the FWT is concerned that the planned venue might be unsafe after the stormy conditions, presumably due to avalanche risk.

While holding out for the fresh snow might sound like the best call, the FWT's already learned a tough lesson while tangling with the competition face: the imposing Bec des Rosses.

Last winter, event organizers decided that the venue was suitable for competition after a similar late-season storm, thanks to unstable snow conditions. The FWT ultimately canceled the competition to avoid risking the athletes' safety.

This season, though, the FWT appears to be treating the Bec des Rosses with extra caution, meaning we should be in for an incredible show this week as the women and men duel for the overall titles in their respective fields.

Stay tuned for additional updates.

9 Riders secure their spot for FWT25 at the Open Faces Obertauern FWT Challenger

freeride world tour final verbier

FWT Challenger by Orage finished for the season, securing the final spots for FWT 2025.

The FWT Challenger by Orage has officially wrapped up for the season, following the final event in Region 1 today. After a short delay, athletes took to the slopes at the 2024 Open Faces Obertauern FWT Challenger and delivered stunning performances, albeit in tricky conditions. This means that the roster for FWT 2025 is now complete, signaling the end of a stellar FWT 2024 season. The test continues next year for the select few who have qualified, and all eyes will be on them to see if they can challenge the world’s best freeriders in the FWT.

2024 Open Faces Obertauern FWT Challenger winners

In the Ski Men’s category, Joan Aracil (AND) put down a clean run with massive drops and huge stomps to take the win, which was especially impressive given the challenging conditions today. Mila De Le Rue (FRA) – daughter of FWT legend Xavier – claimed her first FWT Challenger win in the Ski Women’s category with an incredible run, including a huge backflip to bolts. This freeride prodigy is definitely one to watch in the near future.

freeride world tour final verbier

Noémie Equy (FRA) earned her third win of the FWT Challenger season in the Snowboard Women’s category, showing the judges her true class with a fast and fluid line, connecting loads of features with tricks and stylish turns. In the Snowboard Men’s , Rémi Benamo (SUI) found a fast and steep line, combining loads of tricks with technical riding to finish in first place ahead of a strong field.

FWT 2025 qualified riders from Region 1

Following consistent and high-level performances, here are the riders from Region 1 who will join FWT 2025, and have their shot at the World Title alongside the world’s best freeriders...

Virgile Didier - FRA

Virgile had an extremely impressive season, showing the consistency and level-headedness needed to compete at the highest level. Along with two podiums – and a fourth place today – in the FWT Challenger series, he also claimed two wins and a third in FWT Qualifier 4* events in 2024. This well and truly earned him the top spot in the rankings and a place alongside the world’s best next year.

I’m super happy! It’s a dream to qualify for the Freeride World Tour. I don’t have a lot of words right now… it’s crazy that I will compete on the Pro Tour next season! Virgile Didier

Tiemo Rolshoven - GER

At only 19 years old, this young rider has already racked up a string of FWT Junior and Qualifier wins before entering the FWT Challenger series this season. He continued this form with a huge win in Kitzsteinhorn, followed by a fifth place in Avoriaz and eighth today, which was enough to leave him in second overall and book his ticket in the big leagues next year.

I’m speechless, to be honest. The pressure was immense, but it feels amazing to have this pressure off my shoulders now. Tiemo Rolshoven

Joan Aracil - AND

After a slow start in the first two events, Joan found his form – and a new gear – and went from strength to strength in his FWT Challenger campaign. A fourth in Avoriaz kept the dream alive for the young man from Andorra, and a win today rocketed him up the rankings and into qualification territory.

I don’t even know how I feel right now, I’m still in a bubble. I was tense at the starting gate, and thinking about the rankings, but now I have qualified for the Freeride World Tour! Joan Aracil

Mathys Fornasier - FRA

In just his second year of FWT Qualifier competitions, Mathys secured enough points for a FWT Challenger ticket, of which he took full advantage. The highlight of his season came from a huge win in Avoriaz, which put him on the radar for qualification, and he did enough today to make it happen.

How could I feel better? It’s just amazing! I put down quite a bad run, but at least it worked out. I’m so happy! Mathys Fornasier

Jenna Keller - SUI

With three second-place finishes, Jenna earned her place at the top of the overall rankings. This Verbier local is no stranger to freeride competition – with four competitive seasons under her belt, and multiple podiums – giving her some much-needed experience heading into the FWT next year.

I’m a bit surprised – I didn’t expect to get this far this season. It was actually supposed to be my last season competing, and I was planning on retiring after this competition! I have no words… I just need to wrap my head around the fact that it’s not time to retire for me. Jenna Keller

Lena Kohler - GER

Only 200 points behind was Lena Kohler, who claimed two wins – Monterosa and Kitzsteinhorn – out of four starts, and a sixth place today. Her powerful skiing was one to watch this season, and is the kind of approach that promises results on the FWT.

I’m overwhelmed; I can’t stop crying. This is just crazy. Lena Kohler

Snowboard Women

Noémie equy - fra.

Noémie absolutely dominated the category this season, claiming three wins from four events – and a throwaway third – to finish 1,200 points ahead of the next athlete. This young rider from Val Thorens has stacked up the silverware this year – also earning two wins and a second in 4* events – proving she is the real deal, and one to watch for many years to come.

Snowboard Men

Enzo nilo - fra.

Enzo had a disappointing FWT 2023 season, which saw him miss the cut and drop back down to the FWT Qualifiers. However, it didn’t take him long to rekindle the form that got him there, delivering an ultra-consistent season in 2024 with two huge wins in Kitzsteinhorn and Avoriaz, and a sixth here today that sealed his spot on the FWT 2025.

SNOWBOARD MEN

I’m so stoked! The Freeride World Tour, baby! It was so hard and the snow was so sticky that I almost fell three times, but I eventually made it on my feet. Enzo Nilo

Rémi Benamo - SUI

Rémi was another athlete who enjoyed incredible consistency this year, with a throwaway sixth in the opening event, before claiming a third in Kitzsteinhorn and a third in Avoriaz. However, he needed something big today to qualify, and delivered under immense pressure to claim victory and a FWT ticket.

I’m so excited. I can’t believe it; this is amazing. Congrats to everybody! Rémi Benamo

freeride world tour final verbier

And that’s a wrap for the FWT Challenger by Orage season, with all the comps in both regions now complete. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated and captivated both fans and judges, with a special acknowledgment to the winners and FWT-qualified riders. They demonstrated resilience under pressure, earning themselves the opportunity to join the esteemed list of FWT World Champions.

With the season now complete, it’s time to reflect on the incredible action witnessed, and the promising year ahead in 2025. Stay tuned to the FWT channels and www.freerideworldtour.com over the summer months for any updates.
