Designed to navigate smaller ports of call, the Coral Princess travels to remote destinations around the world. Although it debuted in 2003, the ship's most recent refurbishment in January 2019 helps it stay on par with mainstream competitors.

With 895 crew members and 2,000 passengers, the ship offers a more intimate setting than its larger siblings. Standout amenities include the Lotus Spa, a poolside theater for Movies Under the Stars and a sports court.

In terms of lodging, 80% of outside staterooms are equipped with balconies. You'll find flat-screen TVs and minifridges in all staterooms, while those in Mini-Suites and Suites are granted more space and larger balconies. What's more, each guest aboard Coral Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

When it comes to dining, guests can choose from six venues, including the main dining room, three informal eateries and two specialty dining restaurants. Guests can also splurge for a private four-course meal on their balconies (for an extra fee). Princess Cruises now offers a Dine My Way experience. It allows passengers to customize their dining times for each day on board as well ordering and delivery food and beverages to your room.

Coral Princess departs from ports around the world for sailings in Australia, Hawaii, Canada, the Panama Canal and more. The ship also has several world cruise itineraries.

After about 3 (4?) years of NO World Cruises due to covid, the world cruises from Australia are back! 😁 and this time on a different ship! the Coral Princess! 🚢

The last time I did this thread in 2018 it was the Sea Princess!

On Tuesday 6th June 2023 Coral Princess sets off from Brisbane and for her epic 108 day round the world cruise!.

Bon Voyage!

Wishing you all a really fantastic time as your departure date approaches ever nearer.

I am starting this thread early this year to cover those getting on the Coral Princess in Auckland on 31st May 2023 and on in Sydney on the 4th June 2023.

What a great time you are all in for!!

Here's the fabulous 108 day itinerary...

It will be wonderful following world cruise blogs once more.  I wish all passengers a healthy joyful voyage.

(I continually follow one blog from Sitka Alaska, whose world cruise was stopped in Fremantle,  at the beginning of the pandemic.  Sadly he was  removed from a current world cruise, because he was critically ill.  He is now safely home in Sitka, Alaska.)

The 2024 Sydney departure is 30th April - very early for a world cruise.

We doing some cruising in Japan and SE Asia from end October but that feels like a long way away. We were so spoilt last year with all the Princess restart cruises operating through winter.

Sounds like we who are stuck on land for various reasons will have some great blogs to read re the 2023 WC. I appreciate your efforts anyway as I am sure many others will do.

Coral Princess Review, An Intimate Ship To Enjoy Globally

The Coral princess cruise ship in port

The Coral Princess cruise ship was launched in 2003, and while she sailed the waters of North America for the majority of her life, she now calls Brisbane, Australia, her home port. I had the chance to review the Coral Princess on a 14-day sailing in North America before she relocated south.

Currently, the Coral Princess offers itineraries around Australia and New Zealand between November and April. Then, she positions through the Middle East to London, England, where she sails to Northern Europe.

Guests can take a world cruise of up to 110 days or get exclusive offers on Transatlantic sailings and roundtrip South Pacific cruises from Australia or New Zealand.

About The Coral-Class Vessel

Like her sister ship, the Island Princess, the Coral is a Coral-class vessel owned by Princess cruises, a subsidiary of the Carnival Corporation. With a passenger capacity of 2,000 and a crew of 895, guests can expect good customer service with a low passenger-to-crew ratio.

Coral Princess Lido deck

While built in 2003 for the Panama Canal, Princess refurbished the vessel in January 2019, adding luxury guest beds with pillow tops. She later received an upgrade to MedallionClass and joined the Princess fleet with the  Ocean Medallion technology.

More than 70% of her 1,000 staterooms have balconies, allowing you to enjoy the scenery no matter where you sail. Being a smaller vessel, she is best suited to those who prefer an intimate onboard atmosphere.

Princess refurbished her sister, the Island Princess, adding more staterooms but eliminating some common areas. While this wasn’t popular amongst guests, Princess decided not to mirror that renovation on the Coral.

Aft of the Coral Princess in port

So, the Coral Princess retains her original passenger capacity and remains spacious, like when she was built.

If you prefer a vessel with more venues and attractions, the larger Majestic Princess   or Royal Princess might be more suited to you.

First Impressions

While needing a refresh, Coral’s public areas are spacious, clean, and well-maintained. With only twelve decks, you’ll find it easy to memorize the deck plan and access to dining areas.

The vessel has three swimming pools; the Lido, the Lotus Pool, and one in the sanctuary. The indoor Lotus Pool was quite lovely and wonderful for itineraries with cooler weather. Two hot tubs were adjacent to the pool. While the area is heated, I didn’t find it overly humid compared to other ships.

Lotus indoor pool on the Coral Princess

The outdoor Lido Pool and three hot tubs feature a large-screen TV for watching Princesses’ movies under the stars. However, you won’t find a waterslide, climbing wall, or water sports area for children.

On the Coral, the dining rooms weren’t located at the vessel’s aft, like most ships. Instead, you can find the Provence dining room mid-ship on deck 6 Fiesta and Bordeaux dining venue on deck 5 Plaza.

What I found problematic was that hallways didn’t go through on these decks. So, you couldn’t walk through from the bow to mid-ship on those floors.

To access the dining rooms, you had to walk up or down one flight of stairs and then down or up again.

The Promenade Deck featured a complete circuit around the vessel. I like that on ships. It’s a great place to walk, get some fresh air, and work off that extra dessert.

Most newer ships have dead ends on the outer decks, so it’s a feature I greatly appreciated.

Coral Princess Venues

Mid-ship, the Piazza was a hub of activity with live music, shopping, and special events through the sailing. While only three stories high, it provides a great venue to sit and watch the action. On the bottom deck, a beautiful bronze fountain added tranquility to the otherwise dead space.

Tranquil fountain in the Piazza on the Coral Princess

The ship hosts the captain’s party with its signature champagne waterfall in the Piazza during the first sea day. It’s a great time to enjoy a complimentary drink and meet new friends.

One of the most memorable events was the egg drop competition . This challenged participating guests to make something to suppose a raw egg, which would hopefully survive the drop from the top of the atrium to the floor below. No surprise; most of them ended up scrambling!

The Princess Theater and Explorers Lounge had scheduled lectures, Broadway-style programming, and comedy shows.

While Princess Cruises attracts families, their adult-only sanctuary allows guests to enjoy a kid-free zone. The sanctuary spans three decks at the ship’s aft, from decks 12 to 15 (Aloha, Lido, and Sun), with the pool on the lowest deck.

Coral Princess sanctuary adult-only pool

Guests can purchase half-day, full-day, or multiple days access. For an upcharge, you can also opt for a cabana for the ultimate luxury.

The small ship had the usual fitness center, Lotus Spa, basketball court, Links mini-golf, casino, and teen and youth center on deck 12.

There were a few bars around the ship; the Wheelhouse, Crooner’s, Lido Bar, and Lotus Bar, to name a few.

Coral Princess Staterooms

Staterooms vary in size from a 158 sq. foot interior to a 932 sq. foot suite. There are some accessible cabins for wheelchair guests.

I stayed in an interior for 14 days. In comparison to other lines, the room was tiny. Other than the bed, there was a small desk and no sofa. Storage was limited too.

Coral Princess interior stateroom

Their outside staterooms are similar in size. While the balcony staterooms are roomer at 212 sq. feet (including the balcony), you still won’t have a couch.

Many Princess Cruise ships only add a couch when you book a mini-suite. We enjoyed a  mini-suite on the Majestic Princess , and it was hard to go back to anything less than that.

The mini-suites, club class cabins, and suites have bathtubs instead of showers. If you’re cruising with little ones, you may prefer to upgrade to get this feature. They also have two televisions, one in the living area and one in the bedroom.

Full suites have priority boarding and disembarkation, upgraded linens and toiletries, premium balcony furniture, plus a host of other perks.

Princess recently introduced their “Princess Upgrade” program inviting selected guests to bid for a better stateroom.

Aerial shot of the Coral Princess

While we were recently invited to bid on our upcoming cruise, we chose not to because we were cruising with family and wanted to keep our cabins close together.

Staterooms To Avoid

If you’re sensitive to noise, there are specific staterooms you should avoid. These include the following:

  • Cabins adjacent to the laundry room. P623 (deck 6), E717 (deck 8), D720 (deck 9), C710 (deck 10), and B711 (deck 11).
  • Almost all the cabins on deck 5 are underneath the casino and busy traffic areas.
  • All staterooms on deck 6 are close to the casino.
  • Mid-ship cabins on deck 8, numbered 312 to 334 and 311 to 335, are over the Wheelhouse Bar.
  • Many staterooms on deck 12 are over the Horizon Buffet and pool areas. You could hear staff scraping and moving the chairs and loungers across the floors.

Dining On The Coral Princess

No ship review of the Coral Princess is complete without a review of the food and dining options. Passengers can choose a fixed time or “dine my way.” Since I cruise with food allergies , having a set dining time at the same table with a consistent server is always safer.

Complimentary options include one of the dining rooms on decks 5 and 6, the Horizon Court buffet, a pizzeria, the International Café, and the Lido grill.

Prosciutto and melon appetizer, and surf and turf entree

Also in the Lido deck is the popular ice cream bar. While the pizza was free to eat at the pizzeria, ordering to your stateroom incurs a small fee.

Princess also offers 24-hour room service, and during the cruise, you can order food and drink using your Medallion.

Meals in the dining rooms are classically elegant. Even on non-formal nights, guests dressed the part for dinner, and the seating felt intimate even when sharing a table. My food selections were well presented, nicely portioned, and flavorful.

Princess catered well to my food allergies, and their gluten-free bread was one of the best I’ve tasted across different cruise lines.

All my meals during my 14-day journey were delicious, but I felt Princess excelled in their presentation of desserts. Their chocolate journeys invite guests to “indulge in chocolate journeys,” and I DID!

Princess Cruises chocolate journeys dessert

Alternatively, the Coral princess has three specialty dining restaurants. Located on deck 7 (promenade), Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria and Bayou Cafe and Steakhouse offer fine dining. The Italian restaurant charges a USD 25 fee, and the latter a USD 29.

I found the pricing extremely reasonable, considering RCI Ovation of the Seas charges USD 64.95 for their steakhouse and USD 49.95 for a meal in the Italian restaurant.

I tried both the Bayou Steakhouse and Sabatini’s and was thrilled they could make my food gluten and lactose-free.

To add a little romance to your cruise, the “Ultimate Balcony Dining” allows you to enjoy a fantastic meal while savoring the views in an iconic location.

On an extended cruise, it’s nice to have the option of doing laundry without paying hundreds of dollars. By doing laundry, you can pack half as much. The Coral has self-serve laundromats on decks 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Laundry facilities are busiest on sea days (especially the last) and formal nights as everyone attempts to iron their “Sunday best.”

With the addition of the Ocean Medallion, you no longer need to carry quarters to pay for laundry but can scan your Medallion instead.

Entertainment

The onboard entertainment was good, from the comedians to the Broadway-style shows in the Princess Theater. The performances were always well attended, and it seemed like everyone enjoyed them.

Sitting and listening to bands and music in the Universal Lounge was lovely some nights. I was thankful Princess Cruises didn’t remove this aft venue to add more staterooms, as they did on the Island Princess.

The Explorers Lounge was a great space if you love dancing in the wee hours.

I particularly enjoyed a cooking demonstration that provided some entertainment with comical twists. Afterward, guests could meet the chefs and had the option to purchase a signed cookbook.

Unfortunately, the Coral Princess has had a turbulent history, with two “announced” fires. In 2013, an incident caused a fire in the engine room, which was put out quickly and caused minor damage.

Seven years later, in 2020, another fire occurred in the engine room again, but luckily there were no injuries.

As most passengers know, fire is the biggest concern for cruise ships, so they’re built with high-tech detection systems and compartments to contain fires quickly.

So, you can imagine my surprise when I was cruising through Glacier Bay National Park when a staff member announced a fire in the Lotus Spa.

On the Lido deck of the Coral Princess

Standing on the Lido deck admiring the glaciers, I could see smoke rising from the ships aft. The captain instructed us to evacuate the spa area immediately.

Knowing that only two cruise ships a day sail in Glacier Bay and I hadn’t seen the other one yet, I had visions of the “Titanic” movie. Looking down into the water riddled with icebergs, I knew it was just about the worst place to have a fire globally.

Luckily, the crew extinguished the fire quickly, but it was a valuable lesson in what COULD happen on a cruise ship.

Overall, I enjoyed my cruise on the Coral Princess. I’ve always been a fan of mid-sized vessels because I prefer their intimate feel. Being an older ship, this Princess ship offers excellent value for those who cruise on a budget.

Thanks for your review, it was very helpful as we are doing the circumnavigation cruise around Australia in October. This will be our first cruise on a large ship as we have previously only cruised on the Windstar yachts.

Forever Karen

That's a cruise I'd like to do someday. Have a wonderful trip.

What a disappointment the champagne fountain was!! They only poured enough champagne to fill first 3 rows of glasses & used it as another money grab for photos.

The last two Princess ships I've been on haven't done the champagne fountain.

Tuesday 21st of February 2023

Just completed a trip on the Coral Princess Brisbane to New Zealand and return. I have to say wow what a trip . The Staff on-board were fantastic . The Ship was spotlessly clean. Meals on-board were plentiful and a great range of types . We missed two stops due to Cyclone Gabrielle but full credit to the Captain who kept us and his crew safe . Thanks to all staff for making this trip truly memorable.

Coral Princess Itineraries

Coral princess review, review of coral princess.

The 2002-built Coral Princess cruise ship is the first of the two Coral-class Princess Cruises liners, with sistership Island Princess .

The vessel (IMO number 9229659) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310376000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Coral Princess cruise ship

The 2000-passenger ship Coral Princess, together with sister ship Island Princess, is an aberration for Princess Cruises. The line launched only two cruise vessels of this size before joining the rest of the industry in building ever more massive ships (like those in the Grand-class). Not part of either the group of biggest-in-fleet ships or the mid-sized Sun-class vessels, Coral Princess falls somewhere in the middle and in many ways, it represents the best of both.

Coral Princess mixes the exotic (international crew members, stylish Italian dining venues, celebrity-style spa treatments) and the familiar (cruising's ubiquitous buffets, poolside umbrella drinks, cocktails and bingo).

Decks and Cabins

Most Coral Princess staterooms (1000 total, in 34 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (581). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 20. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2, including the terrace).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The two main restaurants onboard Coral Princess serve up traditional 5-course evening meals. The line offers set seating at 6 and 8:15 p.m. in the Bordeaux and flexible anytime dining in the Provence Restaurant. The menus in both venues are the same with favorites, such as Executive Chef Martial Diffor's fettuccine alfredo, beef wellington, deep-sea cod in coriander butter sauce, twin broiled lobster tail. All meals are prepared to order. Menus in the main restaurants also offer vegetarian choices and Lotus Spa innovative dishes, with healthier options like chilled yogurt and tamarind soup with grated lemon zest, filet of baby turbot with fennel Pernod sauce and tropical fruit smoothie with lime.

Guests who prefer more formal fare can choose the sit-down service in the Bordeaux dining room for breakfast and lunch.

Follows the complete list of Coral Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Bordeaux Restaurant (ship's forward Dining Room; dinner only)
  • Provence Restaurant (ship's forward Dining Room for Breakfast 7-9 a.m., Lunch 12-1:30 p.m., Afternoon Tea 3:30-4:30 p.m.; features Anytime Dining for Dinner between 5:30-8 p.m. or 8-10 p.m. and "Chef's Table" private dining)
  • Sabatini's Restaurant (Italian specialty restaurant; reservations recommended)
  • Bayou Cafe & Steakhouse (specialty restaurant)
  • The Bar & Grill (complimentary fast food)
  • Horizon Court (self-service buffet restaurant, complimentary)

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

On either side of the Fiesta and Promenade Decks are the two grandest venues of Coral Princess: Princess Theater and Universe Lounge. Tucked between the two are the majority of lounges and bars, including the clubby Explorers Lounge, the Wheelhouse Bar which is more sedate, the retro Crooners martini bar, Churchill's cigar lounge and the casino, with its various table games like blackjack, poker, roulette and state-of-the-art slots. By day, ScholarShip@Sea program focuses on enrichment with a wide range of programming. There are dance classes, lectures on bridge and fashion, computer instruction. When Coral Princess gets to the Panama Canal, passengers are provided with a lecture about the canal's history and how it works.

Coral Princess Wiki

The vessel (STX France/Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number C32) has volume 91627 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 8015 tons, max draught 8,3 m. The powerplant is based on 2x Wartisla marine diesel engines (model 16V46C) plus a gas turbine (model General Electric LM2500) with combined output 62,7 MW (84055 hp). The propulsion is CODLAG (combined diesel-electric and gas). The registered shipowner is PRINCESS CRUISE LINES LTD, while the registered manager is BRITTANY SHIPPING CORP LTD.

Princess Cruises Coral ship is the first of the company's two Coral-Class liners, with sistership Island Princess . Ship's christening ceremony was held on January 18, 2003. Its godmother was Mireya Elisa Moscoso Rodriguez de Arias - Panama's first female president (mandate 1999-2004).

The boat has environmentally-friendly engines - more silent, less vibrating and with lower emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The engines are mounted in the funnel, freeing space for more public places and facilities.

During summer, the ship offers 7-day Alaskan itineraries from homeports Vancouver BC Canada and Whittier Alaska . Being one of the "Princess Panama Canal cruise ships", Coral Princess spends autumn, winter and spring on Panama Canal transition voyages . The ship offers 10-days or 2-week itineraries visiting ports in Aruba, Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico Riviera. The two Princess ships Coral and Island are the fleet's only Panamax vessels that cover all standards for transiting through the Panama Canal.

In 2017, Coral Princess did its maiden season of Panama Canal cruises through the new locks (inaugurated on June 26, 2016).

During drydock refurbishment 2019, all Coral Princess staterooms were upgraded with the company's "Princess Luxury Bed". The new "cruise bed" was developed in collaboration with PhD Michael Breus (commonly known as The Sleep Doctor) and the designer Candice Olson. The new cabin beds feature a luxury pillow-top mattress, individually wrapped coils (reducing surface sway) and hypoallergenic duvets.
