Flight of Parched Pig Beers at the Brewery Tour on the Carnival Horizon

Taking a Brewery Tour on a Carnival Ship

Last Updated on August 6, 2022

Microbrewing and craft beer have seen an explosion of interest over the last few years. Interest has bubbled over from just a niche audience to a much more mainstream appeal. Carnival noticed that its guests weren’t happy with just standard beer offerings and in 2016, introduced the first brewery at sea aboard the Carnival Vista in the RedFrog Pub & Brewery. It was the first time custom brews were made at sea, and in the following years, breweries were added to the Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama as part of Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse.

Carnival offers you the complete craft beer experience by providing brewery tours during the cruise. It’s almost a “hidden” tour; you barely see it mentioned except for one line, “ParchedPig Brewery Tour” in the FunTimes, but if you’re a beer enthusiast, it’s totally worth it.

What is the brewery tour?

The Parched Pig Brewery Tour is a 2-hour session where the ship’s brewmaster will walk you through the process of making beer, explain how the program started, give you a tour of the facility, and let you taste 5 beers. At the end of the session, you receive a parched pig souvenir glass and a voucher for a free beer later that week.

How much does the Carnival brewery tour cost?

The tour is only $30 per person, and, in my opinion, it’s totally worth it. It’s a steal considering that you get to sample all 4 draft beers, plus the seasonal brew. If you want to try all the beers, this is the way to go. The 16 oz pours are typically $6.75 each, so this is cheaper, AND you get an extra beer later on and souvenir glass.

Parched Pig Souvenir Pint Glass

How to go on the Carnival brewery tour

Usually, if you’re looking to do an activity on the ship, you book it online or through the Carnival Hub app in advance. The brewery tour is different; you have to wait until you’re on board and sign-up manually. To sign up, you just talk to the bartender at the Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse and sign your name and room number on a sheet.

Flavortown Bar on Carnival Horizon

The brewery tour was high on our list of activities and one of the reasons we were excited about the Carnival Horizon, so we high-tailed it to Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse on Deck 5 as soon as we boarded the ship. The bartenders were all busy, so we walked through the restaurant and went outside for the free BBQ lunch on the Lanai. Once we filled up on some delicious BBQ ( see the menu here ), we went inside and talked to the bartender about the tour. At that point, they didn’t have the sign-up sheet yet, so we went back after dinner that evening.

When we went back, they had a sign-up sheet ready, and the tour was on the next day at 2:30 pm. They said if there’s enough demand, they add additional times on the other sea days, so you shouldn’t have a problem booking a tour.

The brewery tour experience

Guys Pig and Anchor on the Carnival Horizon

We started by going to Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse a little before 2:30 pm. Unlike excursions, you don’t get any tickets to your cabin, so you have to remember when it is. There wasn’t much direction, but we saw a few people in the back of the restaurant, so we walked there. About 7 tables of 4 were arranged with a reserved sign and flight glasses, so we knew we were in the right place.

The brewmaster showed up a little after 2:30 and kicked off the tour. He used to be employed by Brew Hub, the company in Lakeland, Florida, that first developed the beers with Carnival. He took over the position as brewmaster on the Horizon when the original brewmaster moved to the new Carnival Panorama to set it up. The brewmaster was not “corporate” at all; he was a laid-back guy who just focused on making some great beers for the guests.

The brewmaster kicked off the tour by having us sit down at the tables. A majority of the 2-hours is actually spent sitting at the tables and sampling the beer; the production facilities themselves are relatively small, so they don’t take long to go through. As he talked through his points, he poured some pitchers of beer and passed them around. Every two tables, or about 8 people, split a pitcher, so there was A LOT of beer to go around.

Flight of Parched Pig Beers at the Brewery Tour on the Carnival Horizon

The brewmaster started by explaining how beer is made. If you’ve been on a brewery tour before, it’s something you’re probably well aware of, but he tells it in an interesting way. Then he explained how beer is made on the Horizon specifically, from scheduling to brewing.

After we tasted all the beers, we looked at the facilities. First, we saw the beautiful copper kettle out front, where they boil the mash. Then, we went into the cooler to see the beers in the fermenting vessels. It’s a relatively small room and barely fit the whole group. We finished the tour by getting our free glasses and certificate for a free beer.

Key takeaways from the brewery tour

  • The brewery onboard concept started when Carnival tried to overhaul their whole drink program to get away generic drinks. If you notice, on Carnival, each bar now a separate menu with unique beverages and offerings. It started with the higher popular Alchemy Bar and has continued since then.
  • Brewing on board is not that different from brewing on land. The biggest difference is all the certifications and paperwork he needs when disposing of the waste.
  • This Brewery only uses malt, hops, water, and yeast. They don’t add other flavorings like fruit or additives.
  • The Brewery only makes a portion of the beer on the ship. For other venues, the cans or draft are bottled by the Brew Hub brewery in Florida.
  • Each ship has a dedicated brewmaster who keeps up production during the cruise and makes their own seasonal offering.

How were the Parched Pig beers?

Tap Handles for Parched Pig Beers

The general consensus was that Carniva’s Parched Pig beers were pretty good. They are definitely more complex than the canned domestic beers on board but not as innovative or unique as some other craft breweries. They did produce a solid beer, though that ranks relatively high on Untapped , an app for beer lovers.

Parched Pig Toasted Amber Ale

craft beer boat tour

Untapped Rating:  3.52

Description:  “Balanced and smooth, this versatile beer has a rich, toasty malt character with biscuit and caramel notes.”

My take:  It’s a beautiful amber color and was very smooth. The light caramel notes were definitely there.

Parched Pig Farmhouse Ale

craft beer boat tour

Untapped Rating:  3.55

Description:  “Refreshing and fruity with mild spice character. This complex beer with a dry finish is perfect for a hot summer day.”

My take:  Probably one of the best beers of the bunch for drinking on deck in the Caribbean. It’s light and dry, with a bit of fruitiness to it.

Parched Pig West Coast IPA

craft beer boat tour

Untapped Rating:  3.61

Description:  “High hop content makes this beer bitter and bright, with citrus and pine flavors and aroma notes.”

My take:  If you like hops or IPAs, this one is for you. It’s quite bitter, and you definitely get the citrus and pine coming through without it tasting like a bottle of Pine-Sol.

Parched Pig Smoked Porter

craft beer boat tour

Untapped Rating:  3.71

Description:  “A full-flavor robust beer. Brewer with roasted grain and malts smoked in our wood smokers on board.”

My take:  I’m not a porter fan at all, but this beer was my favorite. I was shocked how much I enjoyed it; in fact, I used my free coupon to get a full pour of it later on in the cruise. The smokiness really added depth, and it perfectly complemented the BBQ they served in Pig and Anchor Smokehouse.

Other Beers:

Depending on your sailing, there might be some other beers available. The Carnival Panorama has the Parched Pig Blond Lager, which has a 3.69 rating on Untapped. We’ve also tried the seasonal Christmas Dunkleweizen, a favorable, spicy blend that was probably great for the holidays (our cruise was in March, and they were just finishing off the last batch). They’ve also done a Pumpkin Ale for fall that people rave about.

What Carnival ships have the brewery tour?

This tour is available on the Carnival Horizon , Carnival Panorama , and Carnival Mardi Gras . It will also be available on the Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee when they launch.

There is a similar tour available on the Carnival Vista , but it’s at their Red Frog Pub & Brewery, where they brew the ThristyFrog beers, not Parched Pig.

Flavortown Bar on the Carnival Horizon Pig and Anchor Smokehouse and brewery

What beers do the other Carnival ships have?

3 cans of craft beer, Parched Pig and ThirstyFrog

If you’re not on a Carnival ship that has a brewery, don’t worry, you can still try quite a few of the custom Carnival beers. The Parched Pig West Coast IPA , Parched Pig Toasted Amber Ale , and Thirsty Frog Caribbean Wheat are available in cans and draft across the whole fleet. They also have a special Carnival Birthday Beer to celebrate their 50th anniversary and a new Beach Lager .

These beers are brewed by Brew Hub in Lakeland, FL, and then loaded on board. Want to stock up? You can pre-order these for your cabin at $24 for a 4-pack ( see listing here ).

What’s the difference between Parched Pig and ThirstyFrog?

Parched Pig is the name of the beers developed for Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and are the ones brewed on the Horizon, Panorama, and Mardi Gras. The ThirstyFrog brand was the first beers developed to be brewed onboard the Carnival Vista. They have 4 standard beers available.

  • ThirstyFrog Red:  Light, clean, frothy, and a little bold, this craft beer offers balanced character and whispers of toasted malt.
  • ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat:  With hints of spice and orange, this brew is as sunny as the weather on a tropical cruise. With its crisp, refreshing flavor, you’ll want more than one on a hot day.
  • ThirstyFrog Java Stout:  Calling all coffee lovers: this stout beer features flavors of roasted java and dark chocolate for a bold, rich finish.
  • ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA:  Between ports, nothing quenches the thirst of craft beer lovers like this extra-hoppy IPA. Hints of tropical fruit offer a delicious fragrance and flavor.

Guide to Milwaukee Brewery Tours – Drink Like a Local

Around the turn of the century, the city of Milwaukee produced more beer than any other city in the entire world –  Beer pretty much built the city of Milwaukee! While some of the big names have closed their doors, the brewing tradition in Milwaukee is still alive and strong.

Well before the microbrewery trend swept across the country, Milwaukee has always been home to some great breweries. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or just looking for something to do in Milwaukee on a Saturday afternoon, here’s a list of all the best breweries in Milwaukee and the best brewery tours.

Extreior of MKE brewing - 9th street location - Best brewery tours in Milwaukee

1. Milwaukee Brewing Company

Milwaukee Brewing Company has a long history in the city than most patrons first assume. While the current brewing operations are only a few years old, the brewery technically goes back to the late 1990s with the micro-brews offered at the Milwaukee Ale House.

Thankfully, those beers became popular enough for operations to expand to Walker Point, and now, a second location in the old Pabst brewing neighborhood. Known as MKE Brewing, the company is known for putting together some awesome beers that are available throughout the city at area bars and liquor stores.

The Walkers Point location is conveniently located near numerous top-quality restaurants, some of the best Mexican restaurants , and popular bars, so there is no shortage of things to do either before or after your brewery tour.

The tour at the Walkers Point location of Milwaukee Brewing Company shouldn’t be missed. The real highlight is not necessarily the tour itself—though it certainly is interesting, and you will learn a few things about the brewing process.

Instead, the real highlight is the opportunity to sample numerous MKE beers before and after the tour. Be sure to pace yourself because you will have the opportunity to sample most of the beers currently on tap, in addition to receiving some souvenirs and a token for a beer at one of the nearby bars. For a true Milwaukee beer experience, stop at Milwaukee Brewing Company.

2. Lakefront Brewery

At least for locals, Lakefront Brewery needs no introduction. As one of the first microbreweries on the scene, Lakefront has a downtown location and one of the coolest brewery spaces in the city.

The beer is great, the beer hall to drink it in is worth a visit alone, and the food is perfectly crafted to make you thirsty for another beer or two. Lakefront Brewery has the best cheese curds in Milwaukee ; order some and wash them down with a beer.

Lakefront also boasts one of the most popular Friday fish fries in the city. Lakefront’s beers can now be found all across the country, so why not check out where the whole thing got started by visiting Lakefront Brewery the next time you are in town.

The tours at Lakefront are designed to be one-part informative and one-part entertaining. Along with beer samples and glass, you can also expect to learn at least a little bit about the history of Lakefront Brewery and the brewing process, along with getting some good laughs along the way.

Plan on booking ahead since the tour is one of the most popular in the city. When you book, make sure to leave enough time beforehand for beer samples and some bar snacks to get you prepared for the tour.

About the Brewery tour: A local favorite and probably the best Milwaukee brewery tour, Lakefront Brewery serves up lots of laughs along with the beers. Lakefront tours are fun if it’s your first tour or tenth. While they don’t take the tours too seriously, their beer is another story.

One of Milwaukee’s oldest microbreweries, their beer is some of the best in the city. Along with a good time, you’ll get 4 samples of Lakefront Brewery’s best beer and even some stuff you can’t find in the stores.

For the brewery tour, enter the large doors on N. Commerce Street and purchase your tour ticket, which comes with a souvenir glass and 4 samples. Tours start every hour on the hour except Saturdays, which run every half hour. On weekdays you can still tour the brewery, but it’s best to check the current schedule for times.

History of the Brewery:

  • Lakefront Brewery Tour Address: 1872 N. Commerce St.
  • Tour Hours: Times vary, typically every hour or half-hour from Noon-7:00pm or 8:00 pm. Check online for availability.

3. Miller-Coors

Miller-Coors is one of the largest beer makers in the world, and part of its history and current operations are located right here in Milwaukee. While many cities have a micro-brewery for tourists to visit, few cities have a premier large-scale brewery operation where visitors can see firsthand how beer is produced on a massive scale.

The history of Miller and its relationship to the city is also on full display for visitors to the brewery, and the entire brewery is centrally located, making it an easy trip from downtown. To learn more about one of the biggest breweries in the country, stop over to Miller-Coors for a quick and inexpensive tour.

The tour at Miller-Coors was just recently revamped. Though now it costs a little bit of money, visitors can expect a higher quality tour with a few more perks as well. Visitors can still expect to watch a short documentary about the brewery’s history and to get a behind-the-scenes look at parts of the brewing operation, but now there are a few more perks.

These include souvenirs, tokens for area bars, and the chance to try some experimental beers only available on-site. The best part of the tour is getting to see some of the historic sites, like the caves where beer used to be stored. After the tour, you will certainly gain a better appreciation of some of America’s favorite beer options.

  • Miller Brewery Tour Address: 4251 W. State St.

More Craft & Microbreweries in Milwaukee with Brewery Tours

Milwaukee has always been known as the “Brew City” since it has a history of housing large-scale breweries and because of the city’s German heritage. It comes as no surprise then that the city has a thriving micro-brewery scene.

Starting in the 1980s, microbreweries began to pop up in the city, but it wasn’t until more recently that there’s been an explosion of options when it comes to microbreweries and taprooms. Nearly every neighborhood in the city has at least one micro-brewery, making coming up with a list of the best in the city extremely difficult. Read below to learn about some of the best breweries Milwaukee has to offer.

  • Good City Brewing

Good City Brewing opened just a few years ago, but it has quickly developed into one of the top breweries in Milwaukee. For starters, the location in the middle of the trendy East Side couldn’t be more convenient, and if that wasn’t enough, the brewery plans on opening a second location downtown right near the new Fiserv Forum.

Besides making really quality beer, Good City Brewing also hosts a truly destination-worthy restaurant, and the space is ideal for getting together with friends. Not many other breweries can boast of having an incredible rooftop bar area for sipping micro beers outside on a warm Milwaukee day.

The tours at Good City Brewing enable you to get a look at the behind-the-scenes operations and to sample some of the brewery’s numerous beers on tap. Like most tours, you get some samples and a souvenir, but more importantly, the tour gives you an excuse to stop by the brewery on a Saturday afternoon and to stay for some more beer paired with excellent food.

Be sure to check out the beers currently on tap list and the restaurant’s updated menu online before planning your next Saturday brewery tour.

  • Address: 2108 N. Farwell Ave.
  • Tour Times: Saturdays 1:00pm and 2:00pm
  • Tour Cost: $10

MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom at night with large garage doors and Patio - Top craft breweries in Milwaukee

  • MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom

MobCraft Beer Brewery and Taproom recently opened a Milwaukee location by setting up shop right on the edge of Walkers Point near the popular Mexican restaurant Conejitos, the well-liked Iron Horse Hotel, and Great Lakes Distillery—in other words, the location offers plenty of convenient things to do. The brewery itself is top-notch and is located in a trendy space.

What makes MobCraft really unique is that they crowdsource beer flavor ideas, pick a winner every month, and after brewing it up, offer it to the public in their tasting room. You can check online to see current and past winners, and if you are feeling creative, you can even suggest an idea yourself.

There are two types of tours to choose from at MobCraft: the regular tour and the technical tour. For fans of brewing who don’t need all the technical details, the regular tour offers a great way to sample a few of the beers, see the behind-the-scenes brewing operations, and meet some of the charismatic brewery employees.

MobCraft offers a selection of sour beers, which require a unique brewing process, so the tour can also provide insight into how sour beers are made. The taproom itself offers a comfortable and fun place to hang out before or after the tour, and given its location, there is no shortage of options for places to eat or drink to keep the night going.

  • Address: 505 S. 5th St.
  • Tour Times: Fridays and Saturdays times vary, and technical tours every last Friday of the month
  • Tour Cost: $13

Sprecher Brewing Company

About Sprecher Brewery in Milwaukee: FounderRandal Sprecher got his taste for craft beer while in Europe and fell in love with German-style beers and couldn’t quench his thirst for what was available at the time beer in Milwaukee, so he started to make his own.

Sprecher Brewing Company prides itself on being one of the first microbreweries in the area. Since its humble beginning, Sprecher has grown to include numerous taprooms and restaurants and a host of beer, cider, and sodas to choose from, which are available in numerous bars and around the region in liquor stores.

Sprecher brews an extensive list of beers and ciders and is somewhat unique in also offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic sodas. In other words, it’s pretty impossible for someone not to find at least one Sprecher product that pleases their taste buds. For the main brewery, head north of Milwaukee to Glendale, or if this isn’t possible, head down to Walkers Point to check out their new tasting room.

About the Sprecher Brewery Tour:   There are numerous tour options at Sprecher Brewing. From regular tours available throughout the week to private tours and private tastings, there are options available for anyone looking for a quick activity on the weekend to more well-planned social or business events.

Regardless of which type of tour you go with, you can expect to see the brewing operations, learn about the history of Sprecher Brewing, and have the opportunity to sample numerous Sprecher products—there are so many you will almost certainly want to purchase some to take home for later. Options like beer tastings also come with cheese pairings, which can be a really unique experience even for experienced microbrewery tourists.

  • Third Space Brewing

Third Space Brewing is only a few years old but entered the scene with award-winning beer and an awesome space located minutes from downtown and the Marquette University campus.

Housed in what appears to be a large warehouse, Third Space Brewing features a cozy and spacious interior with board games scatted around, as well as a large beer garden area behind the brewery where you can usually expect at least one food truck to set up shop.

In other words, you are sure to find a comfy spot for a drink regardless of the weather when you visit the brewery. Though they have a vast list of rotating tap beers, be sure to try at least one of their award-winning beers, like the Unite the Clans Scotch Ale.

Though it may be tempting to forego the tour given how nice Third Space’s tasting room is, you may still want to consider it on a Saturday afternoon. Not only will you get a souvenir glass and samples, but you also get an enjoyable and informative tour. The tour groups are usually pretty small, making it easy to ask questions and learn about the brewery operations and how Third Space Brewing got its start.

Plan accordingly so you can hang out after and enjoy some of the beers that you just learned about.

Large Scale Milwaukee Breweries

Miller brewing – millercoors.

The last big brewery standing in Milwaukee is MillerCoors, as it is known today. However, the history of this brewery dates back to 1855, when Frank Miller first started brewing beer in what is now the western part of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee was a good choice for a brewery because of the excellent water source, Lake Michigan. The water is naturally good quality and well suited for beer making. The water is what drew most brewers here, and the long German heritage of the city likely played a part too.

Leinenkugel’s Brewery Milwaukee

While you may have seen the big Leinenkugel’s Brewery sign from the freeway in Milwaukee, the actual brewery is in Chippewa Falls is about hours from Milwaukee. However, you can, at times, get a taste of this Wisconsin born beer while at the MillerCoors Brewery Tour. Leinenkugel’s does not have brewery tours in Milwaukee, but it does have a taproom to sample some of its brews.

Stockholm Craft Beer Tour

Why do the Swedes love beer so much, and where can I get a perfect Swedish brew? Both are excellent questions! Find out on our Stockholm Craft Beer Tour, strolling through Stockholm’s cosy Old Town.

The story about the tour

Our Stockholm Craft Beer Tour , a private beer tour, is a tasting adventure in and around the historical heart of Stockholm, Stockholm’s Old Town . Why in the Old Town, you ask? As beer has been flowing through the Old Town for centuries, frankly, we couldn’t think of a better area!

Together with your guide, also known as a beer enthusiast, embark on a quest that will take you to three different locations in Stockholm’s Old Town . While sipping on a sample, learn about some of the best “öl” (beer) offered by the Swedish capital, exciting facts about the art of brewing in Sweden, and stories about the Old Town. Starting from the very beginning, learn about how beer was once the country’s number one drink to later being banned for over thirty years, how the state tried to limit alcohol consumption, including the story behind Systembolaget (don’t know what that is? Not to worry, we’ll fill you in). We’ll also provide some funny stories about current Swedish traditions and how they relate to Sweden’s beer culture.

From the middle ages to today, consuming approximately 6,5 beers a week (an average for the country), most would say that our Stockholm Craft Beer Tour is the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon. So, we invite you to raise your glass and cheer with us: skål!

Send us your preferred date, time and number of guests and we will get back to you.

Happy Nobel Day! 💡 As Nobel Week was cancelled in 2020, Nobel lectures, prizes and banquets were replaced with Nobel Week Lights - light installations inspired by Nobel Prize-awarded findings and laureates. As the festivities are now back, we sure hope that we are so lucky that the artwork brightening up the city during the darkest month of the year; is a December tradition that has come to stay. A few hundred years ago, if you asked a Norwegian how old they were they might reply “I have seen forty winters!” Every year of life was a success! Now, living conditions are of course much improved, but there is no such thing as a mild winter here. Bring thermal underwear, wool and grow a beard... if you can. ❄️☃️☃️ Of course, if you love the snow and want to ski, then you`re in the perfect place, and you get to see the beauty of Oslo in a truly Nordic light! The canvas of white snow - unpredictable but usually arriving in November/December - can provide a canvas of light across the city that makes up for the few hours of sunlight the people of Oslo get to enjoy. SF on Tap Tours Reviews

What customers say about our bay area brewery tours.

The beer was excellent and we certainly got our money’s worth. Adam had us try several that I normally would have skipped over and I ended up finding a new appreciation for several styles of beer I hadn’t tried in a while.

…as an out-of-towner I was looking forward to walking through the city to sightsee and learn…even the locals would enjoy the fun facts Adam delivers.

The whole tour had a friendly, laid back feel to it.
