Croatia: Islands & Mountains
Our Hiking trip along the Dalmatian coast was probably one of the nicest trips I have done in my lifetime (definitely in the top 4). Ivan, our tour guide, was knowledgeable, helpful and admirably used his great sense of humor in dealing with the swath of personalities that comprised our group. The local restaurants he recommended were outstanding. Although, it’s not possible to see all that Croatia has to offer, our hiking tour gave us a great opportunity to see a good portion of the coastal region. The only area that could be improved is the itinerary involving the Krka National Park. The waterfalls are beautiful, but the crush of humanity made the experience less than pleasurable.

Self guided hiking tour: Split to Dubrovnik
Very good customer service. Our tour contact was very attentive and checked in with us every day. It was very hot and humid and we would have preferred to hike earlier in the morning or later in the day but the schedule usually didn't allow for that. As a result we took shorter hikes/walks. It might be good to go to fewer islands and stay two nights on each to allow time for a hike and time to explore the towns and the beaches. Croatia is a beautiful country and we wanted to explore it to the fullest.

Absolutely amazing! Our guide, Ivan, was fantastic! Based on this tour, I would recommend Tourradar to my friends. Thanks for a great adventure.

Zadar visit. Day 6: Paklenica National Park hiking Day 7: Krka River National Park walking. Sibenik visit. Day 8: Departure
Detailed itinerary – walking & hiking croatia national parks, day 1: arrival day.
Our first encounter for Croatia National Park Hiking Tour will be in Zagreb or Rijeka. You will be picked up at the airport, bus/train station or your hotel and head to Gorski Kotar.
Gorski Kotar is the mountain region popularly known as the „Green Lungs of Croatia“ because of its magical dense forests and fresh air. The charm of this area also lies in the fact that it’s not very touristy. It’s a real jewel still waiting to be discovered, ideal for a peaceful and rejuvenating vacation.
We will all get together for a welcome dinner, meet our fellow travelers and learn more about the adventures that are waiting for us this week.
Night: 3* guesthouse in Gorski Kotar
Driving: 1h-1h45, depending on the airport, day 2: risnjak national park hiking.
This first morning we wake up near the entrance to Risnjak, the National Park that was named after its most popular inhabitant – the lynx or “ris” in Croatian. It encompasses Risnjak and Snjeznik mountain ranges and the source area of the River Kupa. The Park is equally attractive in all seasons: in winter, when covered with snow; in spring, when its meadows transform into carpets of flowers; in summer, when it offers relief from the heat, and in autumn, when the trees bathe in a myriad of colors.
Our goal will be Big Risnjak (1528 m), its highest peak, and we will have time for a deserved break in the hut just below it. Weather permitting, we will be able to admire the views of the Adriatic Sea, neighboring Slovenia and even the Alps. An alternative is a gentler hike in the Kupa River Valley, often described as the magnificent valley of butterflies.
Driving: up to 25 min each way ; Hiking: 5-6 hours for the Big Risnjak hike
Day 3: northern velebit national park hiking.
While we like to say that we will conquer a mountain, Velebit is a kind of a mountain that conquers its visitors. Northern Velebit, the youngest Croatian national park, is just one small part of this magnificent mountain and recognized for its preserved biodiversity, richness of the natural phenomena and pristine wilderness.
We will hike along one part of the famous Premuzic Trail which was built at the beginning of the 20th century and named after its constructor. It runs along the mountain ridge through the most beautiful and inaccessible parts of the mountain with the Adriatic Sea and islands stretching on one side and the continental Croatia on the other. Since the trail was engineered to provide gentle hiking without any steep ascents or descents, we will have an easy and pleasant day enjoying beautiful nature.
After the trip we will head to Plitvice Lakes National Park surroundings where we will enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Croatian countryside.
Night: 3* guesthouse in Plitvice National Park area
Driving: 2h+2h30 ; hiking: 3-4 hours, day 4: plitvice lakes national park walking.
This morning we don’t have to go too far, we are just a short drive away from the oldest Croatia national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sequence of 16 turquoise lakes linked together with beautiful waterfalls and travertine pools are really as beautiful as in the photos, even more. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife .
We will walk by the lakes, past the waterfalls and the trails will occasionally lead us up to amazing viewpoints where you will be able to admire the complete picture of this amazing natural attraction.
Driving: 15 min; Walking: 5-6 hours
Day 5: velebit nature park – krupa & zrmanja rivers hiking. zadar..
Today we head south to explore the gorgeous canyons of Krupa & Zrmanja rivers which are a part of Velebit Nature Park. It’s a real western movie setting and a perfect destination for all trekking lovers.
Our hike starts in Golubici, a small village with a mere population of thirty. From there we head towards Kuda’s Bridge over the Krupa River. There is an intriguing and romantic legend about that bridge. After we tell you the story we will continue to the big 13 m waterfall on the Zrmanja River and back to Golubici.
We stay overnight in a little coastal town enjoying the special energy that the fusion between the mountain and the sea creates. If you want, you can spend a free evening in Zadar, an old city on the coast with interesting Roman and Venetian ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants.
Night: 3* guesthouse in Starigrad or surroundings
Driving: 2 hours; hiking: 5 hours, day 6: paklenica national park hiking.
Paklenica National Park encompasses the small and the big Paklenica canyons and their surrounding area. We will hike along the big one (Velika Paklenica) and make our way to one of the nicest huts in the canyon.
Apart from being a paradise for hikers, Paklenica is a worldwide known climbing destination due to its amazing rock formations. If you prefer, you can also decide to rock climb instead of hike (optional).
After the hike we move south to the small charming town of Skradin situated at the doorstep of the Krka River National Park. Skradin is situated on Prokljan, a lake with brackish water formed by the Krka River before reaching the sea. You are welcome to take a swim on the local beach, hike up to the 14th century fortress and check out the town’s marina, some nice local shops, bars and restaurants.
Night: 3* hotel in Skradin
Driving: 1 hour; hiking: 4 hours, day 7: krka river national park walking. sibenik..
With its seven travertine waterfalls and total drop of 242 m, the Krka River is one of the most beautiful natural and karst phenomena in Croatia. The main attractions are the big Skradinski Buk waterfall, the small island of Visovac with a Franciscan monastery and the Roski waterfall. We will explore the area walking by the refreshing waterfalls and maybe even take a swim in the river if you feel like it.
Since Sibenik town is very close, we will use the opportunity to make a short afternoon visit to walk along the town’s narrow streets, admiring the old stone houses and the famous St Jacob’s Cathedral.
And before you know it, our Croatia National Park Hiking Tour has come to an end. To celebrate our amazing adventure we will have a final dinner together and exchange experiences before saying goodbye to each other.
Driving: 20 min one way to Sibenik; Walking: 2-3 hours (Krka NP)
Day 8: departure.
Today is the last day of our Walking & Hiking Croatia National Parks tour and we transfer you to the airport, bus station or your next hotel. C losest airports are Zadar and Split.
If you wish to spend more time in Croatia feel free to contact us for recommendations. We can organize an extension that can include Mt Dinara (the highest peak of Croatia), Mt Biokovo Nature Park, walking & island hopping, Dubrovnik or any other location in Croatia.
The itinerary of this Walking & Hiking Croatia National Parks tour is subject to change without prior notice. Our primary concern is the safety and comfort of our guests. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the program as planned, but alterations may still occur due to weather conditions, water levels, group preferences and abilities and other exceptional situations.

What to Expect Hiking in Croatia
The top 8 hikes in croatia, where to stay in croatia, what to bring on your hike in croatia, croatia trail safety, faqs on hiking in croatia, final thoughts.
So you’re backpacking through Croatia ? Okay then. To stop you from drying up Split and blocking the main roads, here are the top hikes in Croatia!
Hiking in Croatia can only be summed up by one word: Beautiful. Since Croatia has access to a long stretch of the Adriatic, it has an extraordinary ‘azure’ coastline. The Dinaric Alps loom in the north and are host to sunrises and sunsets so pretty they could make a geography student cry…
Croatia hosts a lot of blue, a lot of big, cool rocks, and some of the most Scandinavian-esque forests you can find in a warm(ish) country. On longer hikes, mountain huts and refuges can be found to take shelter within. Finding a place to stay close to your chosen hike is pretty straightforward too!
Because of the crowds it attracts, some of the hikes can get busy at times. As a general rule, I’d recommend hitting the trail as soon as the parks open, so you can avoid facing the hordes of tourists in peak season. And remember to stay safe out there too!
Okay, without further procrastination, I present to you the most legendary hiking trails in Croatia , meticulously designed to boost your holiday into action…
1. Plitvice Lakes National Park Loop (route K) – The Best Day Hike in Croatia
The Plitvice Lakes route K is a strong all-day trail. It’s a flat and relatively easy hike , with a few steep and slippery parts on the way. You do need to grab a boat between the lower and upper lakes, but this doesn’t detract from the sense of achievement on completion!
Depending on how much time you’ve got, and how hard you wanna go, you can also opt for one of the other Plitvice routes . Route A, for example, is only a few hours and can be done in the morning. The entire trail is contained with the Plitvice nature park.
- Duration: 18.3 km (11.4 miles), 6-8 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Type : Loop
Croatia is known for its incredible national parks . Plitvice Lakes was the first designated national park in the country, back in 1949. It’s now a UNESCO-recognised treasure trove of natural beauty .
Situated halfway between Zadar and the capital city of Zagreb, this park is full of stunning waterfalls and woodlands, and is most noted for its 16 interconnected lakes. Wildlife thrives here — deer, bears, you name it.
Because of its popularity, the best way to see the park without the crowds is to hit the trail first thing in the morning — let’s say 7-8 a.m. There are a few hotels close to Entrance 2, and a campground seven kilometres away that you can use as a base.
2. Milna Coastal Walk from Hvar – Best Coastal Hiking Trail in Croatia
Hvar Island is a famous coastal getaway not too far from Split — a quick ferry ride will put you there in under two hours. The Adriatic beauty speaks for itself here with its rugged coasts, hidden beaches, and gleaming seas.
The Milna Coastal Walk starts at the harbour in Hvar Town, following a paved coastal walkway along Mustado Bay. The coastal section should take you around half an hour, and there’s an eatery where you can stop for refreshments. A beach as well, if you’re in for a quick dip.
- Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 2 hours
- Type : One way (can be turned into a return)
From here, the path becomes much more rugged, weaving partly into the woodland with the sea on your right. After around 20 minutes or so, you’ll find a bay and a great swimming opportunity before you reach Robinson — a hidden gem of a beach with a charming bar/restaurant. Milna won’t be far from here.
To get back to Hvar, walk back the same way you came if you have time. Otherwise, hop on a bus or boat that’ll take you home!
While you could make this a day trip from Split, there are plenty of great places to stay in Hvar , from self-catering apartments to party hostels. The blue cave is something you should check out too- one of the highlights near Hvar!
Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….
These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.
Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…
3. Velebit Hiking Trail – The Best Multi-Day Hiking trail in Croatia
If you’re looking for a good multi-day hike in Croatia, look no further than this. The Velebit Hiking Trail is bound to take you on an epic expedition into the fantasy landscape of Croatia’s largest (not tallest) mountain. Located in the midst of the Northern Velebit National park, this hike is an epic.
The entire trail is about 100 kilometres in length, which can easily be split up into nine days for a more achievable and rewarding hike. Mountain huts dot the route, and provide the perfect authentic feel to your hike!
- Duration: 100 km (62.2 miles), 9 days
- Difficulty: Difficult
- Type : One way
Carrying proper food supplies, clothing and equipment is especially important when you’re on a longer hike. And unlike other day hikes in Croatia, this multi-day trek is a serious task that needs careful preparation.
Most of these huts provide food, drinks, and shelter, but not all of them are open year-round and they have limited space. Be sure to contact them in advance to find out!
57 of the 100 kilometers in this route are made up of the entire Premuži? Trail. Built in the 1930s to connect North and South Velebit, it’s one of the most beautiful parts of the whole trek.
The best time to head out into the hills is during the summer when the weather is most stable.
4. Vidova Gora Trail – Must-Visit Hiking Trail in Croatia
Don’t let the start of this hike fool you. It may begin close to a holiday resort on Brac Island, but trust us; it is not easy. As usual, preparation is key.
The Vidova Gora Trail is well-marked and starts out along a gravelly road. But it won’t be long before you’re on a rocky mountain path, with wildflowers and local sheep for company.
You’ll climb around 900 meters in total, along a switchback trail that winds through scrublands dotted with olive trees. You’ll make your way until you reach a ridge where you’ll enjoy the Zlatni Rat Beach views and the sparkling bay below. Very Croatian of you!
- Duration: 10.5 km (6.6 miles), 3-4 hours
- Difficulty: Average
- Type : Return
The summit of Vidova Gora is spectacular. It’s the highest peak of all the Adriatic Islands and gives you a bit of every vista: the sea, the islands, and the mainland. There’s even a picnic table at the top for that well-deserved lunch you picked up in town earlier.
The hike starts in the village of Bol, so it’s smart to base yourself there. It has dozens and dozens of apartments to choose from and a whole lot of hotels, too.
5. Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop – A Fun, Easy Hike in Croatia
If you’re wondering about the name of this hike, don’t worry; slap is the Croatian word for “waterfall” and you won’t actually get slapped while on this trail.
The Ogrlice and Roški Slap Loop is a relatively easy hike in Croatia that can be found in Krka National Park. This slice of wilderness is located in the lower reaches of the Krka River, close to the city of Sibenik.
It happens mostly along boardwalks, though there are some parts where you can move into muddy trails if you’re into that. It’s mostly shaded and the views are incredible all around.
- Duration: 3 km (1.9 miles), 1 hour or less
- Difficulty: Easy
Strolling around this loop feels more like being in a painting than anything else, really. The insanely beautiful waterfalls are the main attraction (well, duh), and there’s an abundance of wildlife to enjoy, including Europe’s second-highest density of lavender.
At the end of the loop, you’ll find a reward for your hiking efforts: natural plunge pools where you can take a swim. Best done when it’s hot, obviously, so don’t forget your swimming stuff if you’re coming in the summer.
All in all, it’s a great bet if you’re travelling with young children, or simply feel like going for a chilled stroll in nature.
6. Vosac Peak Hike – The Toughest Hiking Trail in Croatia
The beautiful Biokovo Nature Park is a very popular spot for hiking in Croatia. Situated on the Dalmatian Coast, there are numerous paths here, winding up into hills and mountains filled with olive groves and pine trees.
This park is named after the mountain range it sits on — the highest in Dalmatia and second-highest in Croatia. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure (1,762m), and all its craggy peaks make it seem like they’re hugging the sea.
This trek will have you tackling one of the many peaks of this mountain range, Vosac. It’s tough, but it’s also incredibly beautiful. And even if you consider yourself relatively fit, it might still present a challenge.
- Duration: 30 km (18.6 miles), 5-6 hours
Starting off in Makarska, the climb starts straight away. The trail, made up of loose stones, is winding and well-marked (signs boast a red circle with a white dot inside).
Eventually, you’ll start to get glimpses of the city below and the sea beyond. With mountains covering the other side, the ascent becomes steeper and rockier. It can get intense, especially when it’s hot, so be sure to pack enough water.
Reaching the top, you can even see as far as Italy!
7. Mount Srd Trail – Best Hiking Trail near Dubrovnik
Situated within striking distance of Dubrovnik, the Mount Srd Trail takes you away from the walled city and up into the craggy mountain scenery.
There’s a fortress up here and a large white cross, adding to its scenic feel. And even though it’s only around 400 meters tall, it offers some incredible views of Dubrovnik Old Town and the scattering of islands just off the coast.
People do attempt this in flip-flops, fresh off the beach, but we strongly advise you to not make that decision yourself. There’s a steep ascent involved and the trail itself is quite rocky, so proper shoes are a must.
- Duration: 5 km (3.1 miles), 1-1.5 hours
- Type : Return/ One way
The hike itself isn’t the most fun, or beautiful. It’s just a series of zig-zags up the mountain with little to no shade. But it’s not too long, and you’ll be rewarded with that Dubrovnik money shot in the end.
Another bonus is the fact that there’s a restaurant up here. Not bad for a refreshing post-hike beer, and you can always take the cable car down if you’re feeling lazy afterwards.
If you’re staying in Dubrovnik and you’re looking for some hikes, this one is a great place to start.
8. Medvednica Nature Park Loop – Off the Beaten Path Trek in Croatia
North of Zagreb, you’ll find the mystical wooded Medvednica Nature Park. Just a quick step away from the capital, this park hits differently than Croatia’s usual coastal offerings. And feels way more secluded as a result.
This is where you find the locals, not the tourists.
For a smooth start, we’re recommending a lollipop loop that takes in Trail 52 and Trail 48. With a few nice ascents here and there, you will be walking mostly on flat wooded tracks. By most standards, it’s on the easier side of the hikes in Croatia.
- Duration: 7 km (4.4 miles), 3 hours
- Type : loop
You do have more options in the park. With the number of different trails, it’s possible to add a few extra steps and head off in different directions with relative easiness. If you want to make it more difficult for yourself by adding in higher elevations or longer walks, you got it.
But remember to take water and warm clothes, and try to return before the sun goes down — these woods are bigger than you think.
This might be the perfect hike choice if you’re staying in Zagreb . You can even get maps of the park from the Croatian Mountaineering Association, or advice from Zagreb Tourist Information, both of which you’ll find there.
You’ve got quite a few options on your plate when it comes to staying in Croatia. Many people like to stay along the coast, where a lot of its major towns are situated. It’s pretty and it’s laid-back, so there’s no reason to complain.
Split is where all the action is. It’s a bit more central than Dubrovnik, and a great jumping point to the islands of Brac and Hvar. The city itself is also well-connected via roads, public transport, and rail.
Zadar is Croatia’s oldest continuously inhabited city. The epic Velebit Range and the Paklenica National Park are right at its doorstep, so staying here means easy access to hiking spots and a hub to travel further afield.
Then you’ve got Zagreb, the capital city. Transport connections are top-notch, there’s plenty of nature nearby and a wide variety of epic hostels you can choose from. It isn’t the most popular option, as it’s far from the Dalmatian Coast, but it feels like what it is: a real, authentic city.
If you’re going full chill mode, picking one of the islands will probably be a smarter move than the busier capital city of Zagreb.
They’re quite accessible from the mainland and are a great option for going on hikes too. Served as a bite-sized destination, it’s topped with a laid-back vibe and awesome coastal treks. You can hop from one to another as well!
Best Airbnb in Croatia – Ancora City Apartment – Pula
Perfect place for a couple, a small family, or a group of three to four friends. Knocking back a glass or two of chilled Croatian vino on the roof terrace will kick your stay off, and things just don’t get worse from there. They just don’t. If you want my honest opinion, this Airbnb is worth the price.
Best Hostel in Croatia – Hostel Angelina Southern – Dubrovnik
Hostel Angelina has the perfect blend of location, atmosphere, and character. For travellers looking for more than the average dorm room sleeping experience, Hostel Angelina is one of the most amazing hostels in Croatia !
Best Hotel in Croatia – Split Inn Apartments – Split
Admittedly, I tend to stay at hotels the least while traveling. The hotel-apartment hybrid vibe of Split Inn Apartments means that this place can hold its own against all the sexy Airbnb flats in the city, and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the Old Town.
We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Putting a packing list together for a Mediterranean vacay is usually all about shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits. But if you want to sink your teeth into some awesome hiking trails in Croatia, you’re going to need more.
First off, the footwear. While the beach might ask for flip-flops, you’ll need some solid hiking shoes for the trail . Lightweight hiking trainers with a good grip will be fine for most hikes; more strenuous treks will require sturdier boots.
The clothes you bring on a hike will vary with the seasons. In the summer, you want breathable clothes that protect you from the sun — a swimsuit will also come in handy to jump into that remote waterfall. In cooler months, it’s all about the layers. Pack a waterproof jacket too.
If you’re planning a multi-day hike in Croatia, more in-depth preparations and packing will be needed. Most of the time, you’ll be carrying food supplies and a sleeping bag on your back.
But even if you’re just going on a short stroll, having a few basic essentials such as a first aid kit , a blister pack, mosquito repellent, and water bottle in your bag will be extremely useful.
To make sure you come fully prepared, here’s a tick-list of things to pack for any hike in Croatia.

Aside from basking in the sunny beaches and exploring the old towns, Backpacking in Croatia equals a lot of nature too. Hiking is the perfect way to uncover the hidden beauties of this Mediterranean country.
You may be on a chilled vacation mindset, but that doesn’t mean you should head off on a hike unprepared. Plan your hike in advance, make sure you leave plenty of time to make your way back in daylight, and always let somebody know where you are going .
Trails are often uneven and have sheer drops, which means hiking in beach sandals or unsuitable clothing is not a good idea. Covering up is also advised – in some wooded areas, ticks can become an issue.
Also, respect the sun. That shit’s strong. Croatia gets really hot in the summer, and many hiking paths are not shaded.
When it rains, rocky paths get muddy and slippery. In the winter, mountain grounds may get a covering of snow. Always check the weather!
Bring enough water for the hike, as well as sunscreen. Add a hat and sunglasses, and you’re good to go.
No matter where you choose to hike in Croatia, one thing is for sure: you need travel insurance . It’s important to count on that extra security blanket to help you out — you never know when you might need it.
Don’t Forget Your Croatia Travel Insurance
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Here’s what people usually ask us about the best hikes in Croatia…
What are the best Croatian Hiking Tours?
Croatia has a wealth of hiking available, but some of the best tours revolve around the unbelievable Plitvice lakes . These are composed of an upper and lower set of lakes and are surrounded by some of the most amazing scenery. Take care though! The lakes can get super busy in peak tourist season, so try to avoid this if you can.
Is there any good hiking in Split, Croatia?
Yes! Since Split is surrounded by a jagged crop of tasty mountains (including the formidable Veliki Kabal) there are even some moderately difficult hikes on offer. I would recommend Vickov Stup as an achievable peak for keen explorers, and Marjan hill for something a little more relaxed. The Krk waterfalls aren’t far away either, and definitely worth the transport costs!
Can I go hut-to-hut hiking in Croatia?
Absolutely! Tackling either the Velebit trail or the Premuži? Trail will give you a bunch of huts to move between. There are lots of huts, especially in the national parks, and along mountain trails. Generally, if there is a path going up a mountain for more than 6 hours, there will be a hut somewhere along it. Don’t hold me to that, because you should still check first.
What are the best Croatian hiking vacations?
Since Croatia is so awesome (and stuffed with epic views), you don’t really have to plan your visit around hiking. Split, Dubrovnik, and a bunch of other super famous Croatian towns are all surrounded by incredible hikes pretty organically. It is definitely worth making a detour to the Northern Velebit national park, or the Dinaric Alps in the north if you want the serious serious stuff though!
So there you have it, some of the best hikes in Croatia! Whilst I didn’t go into extreme detail, hopefully there is enough here to stimulate some plans, the pulling out of some dusty hiking gear, and an emarkation on the trail…
Remember, always pack a water bottle, a fresh pair of socks, and more snacks than you think. It gets hungry out there, and your mate Terrance gets hangry as hell.
Love, peace, and well wishes on your soon-to-be life-changing Croatian hike…

Itineraries
Arrival to zagreb.
On your arrival day you will be picked up from the airport and we will drive to our first point of interest – Gorski Kotar. Gorski Kotar is the mountainous region in Croatia located around 1,5 hour drive from the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. This forested area, often called the green lungs of Croatia still remains a hidden gem not many tourists know about making it a perfect retreat for body and soul much needed after a long flight. After you settle in your accommodation we will arrange a welcome dinner with a traditional Croatian food as the best way to start your Croatia adventure. At this point we will have a chance to get to know each other and discuss the upcoming holiday itinerary.
Risnjak National Park Hiking
Risnjak National Park covers an area of 63.5 square kilometers and includes Risnjak and Snježnik massif and the source area of river Kupa. Area of the park is a strong climate and vegetation barrier between coastal and continental parts of Croatia and a natural bond between the Alps and the Balkan mountains. We start the hike in the morning and our goal is Big Risnjak – the highest point of the park elevating 1528 m above sea level. There are several hiking trails ( from 1 to 3 hours long one way) leading to Big Risnjak. On our orientation dinner we will discuss which one to take according to your abilities and wishes. Once we reach the top we will be able to admire the magnificent views of the Adriatic sea, surrounding are and even the Alps if the weather permits. Before we start descending we will have a deserved brake in one of the most beautiful mountain huts in Croatia, situated around 100 m from the top.
Northern Velebit National Park Hiking
Third day of our adventure we are leaving Gorski Kotar behind and continuing towards Plitvice Lakes. On our way south, after 2 hour drive, we will visit Northern Velebit National Park covering the area of 109 square kilometers. It is the youngest national park in Croatia recognizable by its preserved biodiversity, richness of the natural phenomena and experience of pristine wilderness. We will take the part of Premužić trail, named after its constructor from 1930s. This trail, often regarded as masterpiece of trail building is also suitable for visitors unaccustomed to mountaineering. Highest point elevating at 1630 m offers a spectacular view over the Adriatic sea and islands to the one side and continental Croatia to the other. We will finish the day with checking in to the accommodation in Plitvice Lakes area.
Plitvice Lakes National Park Tour
Plitvice Lakes National Park is the best known and most visited Croatian National Park what makes it one of the biggest tourist attractions in Croatia. Plitvice Lakes, with its outstanding beauty, was in 1979 inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site for geological and ecological values. Complex of 16 terraced lakes joined by waterfalls offers visitors walkways, hiking trails, electric boats and buses. We will start our walking tour of Plitvice Lakes in early morning hours to beat the crowds. Beautiful lakes and amazing waterfalls will give you numerous opportunities for photo taking and soaking up this magical natural attraction. Besides walking, we will have a panoramic boat ride across the lake and take an electric bus back to our starting point. Afternoon is reserved for optional cycling tour or, for those more adventurous, zip-line over the canyon of river Korana.
Paklenica National Park Hiking and Climbing
After one hour drive from Plitvice Lakes we will reach Paklenica National Park – area of 95 square kilometers which is a part of the longest mountain in Croatia, Velebit. Paklenica is famous for dramatic canyons carved into the slopes of the mountain, beech and black pine forest and untouched nature. National park offers more than 500 m of climbing routes and 150 km of hiking trails. After we discuss which activity, hiking or climbing (or the combination of the both) you prefer we will finalise the itinerary for the day. In the late afternoon we will settle in the small seaside village for the next two days. You are welcome to take a swim on the local beach or have a walk by the sea.
Krka National Park Tour
Krka National Park, situated along river Krka is known for a series of seven waterfalls and Visovac island with a 15th century monastery situated in the middle of the lake. This natural and karst phenomenon is covering 145 square kilometers and offers more than twenty hiking trails. We will take one of the trails to see the biggest attraction in Krka National Park – Skradinski Buk waterfall and take a boat ride. On the way back to our accommodation it is possible to make a stop at Šibenik – the only city in Croatia and one of few in the world with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Picturesque Mediterranean city of Šibenik is famous for St. Jacob Cathedral which is the best example of fusion of Gothic and Renaissance art in Croatia. In the evening we will have a traditional dinner together to celebrate our amazing adventure.
After you are done packing or after your last swim in Croatian sea we will transfer you to the airport/bus station or your next hotel.

We arrange for our guests to stay in a mix of hotels and private accommodations, depending on the specific holiday and the region of Croatia being explored.
Yes, we strongly recommend booking in advance. Early booking not only secures your spot but also provides you with a wider range of options. Please note that if you book just prior to or during the season, we may not be able to guarantee availability in certain hotels and apartments.

Exploring Croatia Walking Tour
What makes a perfect vacation? Immersing yourself in the history, rich culture, and natural beauty of a country? Enjoying fine cuisine, superb wines, and candlelit dinners alfresco in traditional fishing villages? Exploring walled medieval hill towns, Roman ruins, sandy Mediterranean beaches—all with a small group of friends? Then join us in Croatia where we check all the boxes for your perfect trip.
The mix you’re looking for
Croatia is the perfect mix of enrichment and relaxation. It’s the Mediterranean the way it used to be. Croatia seamlessly blends 2000 years of palatial magnificence with quaint and time-forgotten villages. You’ll discover the stunning beauty of national parks, Istrian vineyards, and a glistening Adriatic coastline.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
You’ll walk through the maze of 16 lakes that spill into each other with hundreds of waterfalls and rivulets. And rather than make a quick stop then drive away, you’ll spend the night in the national park within earshot of the flowing water.
Island hopping in the Adriatic
You’ll spend a full day on each of the most enchanting islands on the Dalmatian Coast. You start with fashionable Hvar, then on to Korčula, the birthplace of Marco Polo. The island of Mljet is a national park with placid salt lakes and an ancient monastery on an island within an island. Finally, you’ll enjoy Lopud, a car-free island with just 300 inhabitants—but home to over 14,000 at its peak of 17th-century power.
Discover Split and Dubrovnik
These popular Adriatic ports of call are walled cities preserving timeless treasures. Split encompasses the sprawling Palace of Diocletian—and you’ll stay the night at a luxury hotel within the palace. Dubrovnik regularly receives praise as the most beautiful medieval city in the world. You’ll stay within the walls of the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Istrian Peninsula
With vineyards, olive groves, walled hill towns, and Roman ruins, you could easily mistake Istria for Italy. You’ll stay in Motovun, the most charming of Istrian hill towns. A winery tour and hunting truffles are both a delectable delight and an unforgettable memory.

Croatia | the dalmatian coast, island hopping on the adriatic sea..
- "How beautiful Croatia is, how cool the Roman ruins are, the excitement finding our own way, the clear water, the climate, the ferries, the guides. Everything went as planned!" - Betsy Hannaford
- "Ah, the food.... since seafood is my favorite food on earth (or sea), I was in heaven every night. Breakfast was provided by the hotels, I really didn't eat lunch, so my special meal each day was the seafood supper. The evening foods were glorious and varied... shrimp, octopus, squid, clams, sea bass, or each stuffed within each other. Yes, the foods were memorable, and delicious." - Lucia L

Trip Highlights :
Medieval walled cities, an abundance of islands and well-maintained hiking trails out your front door., a nice mix of cultural sightseeing and hiking including an exploration of dubrovnik, a unesco world heritage site., island hiking and hopping with the azure waters of the adriatic as your backdrop..
Welcome to Croatia! Azure, cobalt, indigo — our 8-day self-guided Croatia hiking tour is a celebration of blue skies and pristine waters. The villages are immaculate and the bustle of the beaches and exceptional restaurants, enchanting. The red tiled roofs coupled with the crystal clear sea is pure magic.
Most travelers will want to begin their Croatian adventure by arriving in Split . Split enjoys a small and convenient airport with frequent service to and from hubs around Europe. Spend a day with a local guide exploring Split and the UNESCO protected city of Trogir , then hop on a ferry to the island of Korčula . Korčula, the island, is considered the most fascinating of the more than 1,000 islands found off the Croatian coast. Korčula, the town, is a walled village perched over the sea – a kind of “mini” Dubrovnik. The island offers superb hiking, from long ridge or coastal walks, to the mysterious rock mazes of Kocje.
From Korcula it is on to Mljet . The island of Mljet has one of Croatia’s most fascinating and luxuriant national parks on the western tip of the island. Famed for its seafood and seaside lakes, the island has an enormous amount to offer. Stay in the fishing hamlet of Pomena , which coincidentally boasts Mljet’s only hotel (a good one at that!).
Now on to Dubrovnik , where you arrive by turboferry in the port suburb of Lepad. Here enjoy a superb hotel on the edge of the walls of the old town. Embark on a walking tour of the old city with a local guide. Of Greek-Roman origin, the modern Dubrovnik is considered the finest walled medieval city in the world . Finish the tour with a hike on the heavenly island of Lokrum.
The hiking itself has a surprisingly familiar character for those who have hiked in the Alps. Hikers enjoy well-signed and maintained trail systems , great limestone walls, plentiful wildflowers, and the call of the Mountain Dole in flight. At the end of the day, however, it is the perfect water of the Adriatic that makes the trip so special. Stunning to look at, refreshing to dip in and incredible to boat on! Plan on plenty of hiking this week while allowing time to enjoy the water, the culture, and the all the fun that seaside Croatia is all about.

Trip Itinerary
Choose from our standard itinerary or customize the trek by adding or subtracting days.
Day 1 - Arrive in Split
The ancient port town of Split makes the most convenient arrival gateway. Split boasts some of the best Roman ruins to be found on the Adriatic Coast and an extra night there is highly recommended. Enjoy the first of two nights in a beautiful and well-located hotel in downtown.
Day 2 - Split and Trogir
This is your day to explore Split. This tidy and compact city could not be more of a delight. Enjoy the services of a local guide to show you the history and magic of Split and the UNESCO protected city of Trogir (four hour tour). We will provide a menu of must-see options (including some exercise – don’t worry!). We recommend Diocletian’s Palace for your dose of culture, followed by an ascent to the hill summits of Marjan for unforgettable views of Split below, perhaps finishing with some time spent on Brela Beach, which many consider the most attractive in Europe. Return to Split hotel.
Day 3 - Split to Korčula
Enjoy a guided outing to Mosor, perhaps Croatia’s most popular non-technical summit. A late afternoon ferry transfers you to Korčula. This medieval walled port town is delightfully charismatic and filled with history. Many places claim Marco Polo as one of their own, but when you arrive in Korčula, there is no doubt that this is his birthplace. We will situate you in Korčula’s best hotel for the next two nights.
Distance: 5 miles. Elevation gain: 2000 ft.
Day 4 - Orebić
A short ferry to the village of Orebić sets you up for another of the coast’s great hikes. Today’s loop hike takes in the summit of St. Ilija and its grand panorama before descending back to Orebić on ancient paths past sensational churches, vineyards, and unbelievable villas. Wonderful views of the island of Korčula are certain to delight. Return to Korčula hotel.
Distance: 8 miles. Elevation gain: up to 3000 ft.
Day 5 - Korčula to Mljet
More island hopping today as you transfer to the island of Mljet. A turbo-ferry brings you to the island’s port of Pomena. From the hotel set out for a waterside ramble on Mljet’s west coast. It is easy to understand how Ulysses let seven years get by on the island as you watch the sun go down on the coast.
Distance: 6 miles. Elevation gain: 600 ft.
Day 6 - Mljet to Dubrovnik
Today’s hike takes you to the port of Polače, climbing to a high point where you can see both coasts of the Island. After a picnic here you hike down to the water to meet your final water transfer back to the mainland and one of Dubrovnik’s finest hotels.
Distance: 5 miles. Elevation gain: 1000 ft.
Day 7 - Dubrovnik
Start the morning off with a guided tour of the city. Catch a midday ferry from the old harbor to Lokrum, and circumnavigate this small and unique island. Several lunch spots are available not far from the trail. Return to your excellent Dubrovnik hotel.
Day 8 - Depart
Awake to the beautiful sights and delicious smells of Croatia, enjoy breakfast, and depart as needed.
Many buses and, of course, taxis connect to the Dubrovnik Airport. There are also many activities around Dubrovnik itself making any additional time spent there very rewarding.

Trip Levels
With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

From stunning hikes to secluded wild swimming coves: seven reasons why Croatia is a must for adventure lovers
Whether you’re a climbing fanatic or a novice sailor, there’s plenty of outdoor experiences to be found in this amazing Adriatic country
With spectacularly diverse landscapes and beautifully unspoilt nature, Croatia offers a wealth of experiences in the great outdoors – from hiking and kayaking, to cycling, climbing and more. So come and take a walk on Croatia’s wild side – or peddle, paddle, swim – and discover just how much outdoor adventure this beautiful Adriatic country has to offer.
With 5,000km of coastline and more than a thousand islands, the scope for sailing on the vivid blue waters of the Croatian Adriatic feels almost limitless – with a breathtaking feeling of space, and excellent mooring facilities and marinas. Explore the open waters and islands around Split and Dubrovnik, cruise along the channel between the Pelješac peninsula and Korčula, or set sail for the unforgettable Kornati islands – rocky, uninhabited, wildly beautiful and a place that can only truly be appreciated by boat.
Wild swimming
Away from the main beaches, Croatia boasts idyllic swimming at any number of secluded, rocky coves on islands such as Vis, Lošinj, Korčula and Hvar – and there’s plenty of scope for open-water swimming, off the Kornati islands, among the Pakleni islands, or the cluster of islands just off the coast near Šibenik. But swimming in Croatia isn’t just about salty seascapes. There are safe swimming areas below the thundering waterfalls of Krka national park, and the Cetina and the Kupa are perfect rivers for wild swimming.
Look beyond all those gorgeous beaches and sun-soaked historic towns, and you’ll soon discover that Croatia is a fantastic place for hiking. Expect stunning scenery, year round – from rugged mountains and lush forest, to gorgeous lakes and waterfalls – which can be explored on well-marked trails, some of them epic in scale. For Croatia’s best hiking, head for the Velebit mountains, which run over 140km along the coast and include Northern Velebit and Paklenica national parks – places of spectacular karst landscapes, juniper-clad summits and dramatic gorges. Risnjak national park in Gorski kotar has wonderful forested trails, while a walk in Plitvice Lakes national park takes you alongside cascading waterfalls and turquoise lakes. Combine a day on the trail with a refreshing swim afterwards, followed by a sunset dinner beside the gently lapping waves of the Adriatic – what’s not to like?
Those mesmerisingly clear, blue waters of the Croatian Adriatic are a paradise for scuba diving – with excellent visibility, beautiful marine life, and offering both shallow and deeper water dives. The Kornati islands with their reefs, walls and caverns, and nearby Telašćica nature park at one end of Dugi otok near Zadar, are among the best areas for diving in Croatia. For spectacular wreck diving, head for the Istrian coast where famous dive sites include the HMS Cariolanus and Baron Gautsch – or to the waters around Vis, where wrecks include a B-17 Flying Fortress, and the so-called “blue cave” on the tiny island of Biševo.
Cycling and mountain biking
Croatia offers oodles of scope for adventures on two wheels, whether road cycling among the medieval hill towns and vineyards of central Istria, or adrenaline-fuelled descents on dedicated single-track mountain bike trails. Mountain bike hotspots include Medvednica nature park near Zagreb, the area around Omiš, and a whole raft of other places on the Dalmatian coast and islands, in particular Brač and Hvar – so ditch the car and explore the islands by bike instead. For an easy cycle route suitable for families, try the Parenzana – a former narrow-gauge railway in Istria. Running from Poreč on the coast and going by way of Motovun, Grožnjan and Buje, pedalling the Parenzana takes you across olive terraces and past lavender fields, through tunnels and over viaducts – not to mention through some of Istria’s finest wine producing areas, in the amazing gastro region of north-west Istria.
Croatia has no shortage of sheer limestone cliffs to hone your climbing skills on. The most famous climbing spot in Croatia is Velika Paklenica, in Paklenica national park. Head into the gorge just a short way to reach the first set of crags, right next to the well-used footpath – or slightly farther to the awe-inspiring face of Anića kuk, some 400 metres high and an icon among Croatian climbing locations, with some fiendishly difficult routes. Kompanj in Istria is a local favourite, or try the sea cliffs near Brseč.
Kayaking and rafting
The rocky coastlines of Croatia’s thousand or so islands lend themselves particularly well to sea kayaking adventures – set off along the beautiful southern coast of Vis, or explore Lopud and the other Elaphite islands near Dubrovnik. As for river kayaking, look to the Cetina, which flows around 100km from its absolutely stunning source – a deep, almost otherworldly turquoise pool nicknamed the “eye of the Earth” – to reach the Adriatic near Omiš. Several stretches of the river are great for kayaking, while other areas with rapids offer a thrilling rafting experience.

“Some of my favorite memories are from summer vacations spent with my wife, Liz, and our three children,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “Having the freedom to step out of our usual routines and familiar roles opens up amazing opportunities for deeper connections and new ways to have fun together. Now’s a great time for families to decide where they want to go for summer vacation. Personally, I’m very excited about these new trips we’re rolling out. Then again, I’m excited about our entire collection of Backroads Family Trips for 2024 and 2025, but some might say I’m a little biased.”
