Working on board a cruise ship offers crew members the opportunity to travel and get paid for it. What other benefits do cruise lines offer their employees? And, what happens in the case of an unexpected circumstance such as an accident? Is there any compensation or should cruise ship crew consider private insurance?

Cruise Ship Crew Medical and Injury Compensation

Each crew member is expected to pass a medical examination prior to each contract. In addition, each crew member must have the necessary vaccinations for the countries to be visited on their contract. When an employee accepts the terms of their employment agreement or contract, they are acknowledging that the company does not provide medical care or medical reimbursement for pre-existing conditions or for crew member’s misconduct or negligence.

If a crew member gets sick on board, they have access to the ship’s medical staff and prescription medicine at no cost to the crew member. When the medical team decides that the crew member is ok to go back to their duties, they will typically give a doctor’s note to be given to the crew member’s supervisor.

If a crew member must disembark for medical reasons which manifest while working onboard the cruise ship, they may be entitled to additional medical attention and expenses paid by the cruise line, upon their return home. The crew member typically receives a daily allowance in an amount determined by the cruise line until the crew member is able to work. In addition, most cruise lines cover the crew member’s medical expenses.

Accident and Death Benefits for Crew

If a crew member dies or is injured as a result of an accident during their employment, most cruise lines pay a lump sum to the employee’s next of kin and children. Rarely will a cruise line offer compensation for accidents or death that occurred while on leave. They also do not pay benefits if the death or injury was a result of the crewmember’s negligence, misconduct, suicide, or natural causes.

In the event of a permanent disability, the cruise line generally pays a lump sum to the crew member based on the percent degree of permanent disability. As with any accident, the cruise line does not pay a benefit if the disability was a result of the crew member’s negligence, misconduct, or natural causes.

Health and Disability Insurance for Crew Members

Depending on the country that you are a citizen of will most likely determine if you need private disability insurance. For example, in Canada, each province has a health care system in place that would cover the costs of medical care if you were injured on your leave. Many countries, such as specific states in the United States expect citizens to pay their own medical costs unless they have private insurance.

You may want to look into this further before joining a cruise ship. If you do want to purchase some type of disability or health insurance, make sure you understand its terms and conditions. How long are you permitted to be outside of your home country before your insurance is not valid? You may also not be covered if you are negligent or participate in a dangerous sport (or shore excursion). Read the fine print.

Compensation for Loss of Personal Effects

Crew members may suffer a loss or damages to their personal effects as a result of fire, flooding or other cruise ship disasters. Depending on the employment agreement, the crewmember may be entitled to compensation. Generally, cruise lines will not provide compensation for loss of cash or jewellery.

In the case of the Costa Concordia, where crew members had to leave most, if not all, of their personal effects behind, the compensation for each crew member varied. According to the Financial Times, one crew member’s settlement contract offered a maximum of $3,750 to cover personal effects and cash lost on board, plus pay for the remainder of the crew member’s contract.

On the other hand, uninjured passengers were compensated the full cost of their cruise, travel expenses, medical expenses and about $14,500 each, by the cruise line to cover lost baggage and psychological trauma, according to the Associated Press. Injured passengers were compensated more.

Crew Personal Effects Insurance

Crew members may or may not consider personal effects insurance when they work on a cruise ship. Most cruise lines compensate for loss as a result of flooding, fire or collision. For example, Princess Cruises compensates for actual loss up to a maximum of $3,000 per crew member. Unfortunately, most cruise lines do not compensate against theft.

It’s common to find an insurance company to provide personal effects insurance for short term travel. This type of insurance covers you in case of lost luggage from a flight or cruise as a passenger. As a crew member you need the insurance to cover you for 6-10 months, depending on the length of your contract.

Some cruise lines have discounts for onboard purchases and services, discounts for cruising as a passenger, company retirement plans, stock purchase programs, and family travel benefits. While specific position requirements depend on the job you are interested in, there are some essential requirements that all crew must meet to work onboard:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Hold a valid passport
  • Have a US C1/D visa (if you are not a Canadian or US citizen/resident)
  • Have a Princess-specific pre-employment medical exam certificate
  • Meet the English fluency requirements relevant to your position

Also known as a seaman's visa, some nationalities need this to work onboard a ship and travel to certain countries. This visa normally lasts between two and five years. You will be required to make an appointment at your nearest US Embassy to gain this visa; all paperwork for the appointment will be supplied by your manning agency.

This extensive examination is at the employee's expense and can be conducted through one of Princess's recommended medical facilities—you'll be advised which one is closest to you. Once this is completed and approved by our corporate Medical department, you are cleared to travel and work onboard.

Shipboard employees are scheduled to vessels based on operational need. This means you could be assigned to any one of our vessels in the fleet depending on where a position is open at the time you are travel-ready. After your first assignment, we will be able to provide details about the next assignment after your leave period.

At the beginning of each contract Princess Cruises will provide flights from your designated airport to your assigned ship. At the completion of your contract, Princess will arrange for your travel back home as well. It is your responsibility to get to the airport from your home, but from there we will provide any necessary accommodations and/or transportation to and from the ship.

While you are covered medically in Los Angeles and onboard the vessel, we suggest you purchase basic travel insurance to cover the cost of lost luggage or injuries that could result from shoreside activities.

Contract lengths vary by position but range between four and ten months. After each contract you will receive approximately 60 days of vacation before your next assignment. Your daily work schedule while onboard will depend on your particular position, but you can expect to work seven days a week and anywhere between 10-13 hours per day.

Time off during the contract is not permitted. In case of family emergencies, Princess Cruises does understand that additional time at home may be needed and does accommodate these requests on a case-by-case basis.

Accommodations vary depending on the ship and position. Those in non-management positions generally share a cabin with one to three other roommates whereas those in most management positions are entitled to a single cabin. Cabins include a storage space, TV, and DVD player.

All vessels have 120v US power and some vessels also have 220v European power.

Yes, alcohol is available for purchase during time off. However, Princess Cruises has a strict alcohol limit and at no time can a crew member be intoxicated.

Princess has a zero-tolerance drug policy. All crew are subject to random and reasonable-suspicion drug testing. Violation of these policies will result in termination.

There is no set curfew. However, crew who are out late should be respectful of other crew members and guests nearby.

Crew members who meet specific length-of-service criteria have the option of requesting "relatives travel," a benefit that allows family members to sail onboard for a limited period of time. Some restrictions may apply.

While some officer-level positions do allow restricted access to guest areas, most facilities are for guests only. However, we have a variety of crew-only facilities, such as a crew pool, whirlpool, gym, bar, and  Crew Club, which is a communal room where you can gather to watch movies, play games, sing karaoke, and much more!

Postal mail services are available while onboard. You will also have access to computers in the crew training areas. Wi-fi Internet is also available in the crew areas if you choose to bring your own laptop or tablet. Princess offers discounted rates for phone and Internet cards so you can stay in touch with those at home. But remember that satellite capabilities are sometimes limited while the ship is at sea.

You will be provided with mailing addresses for ports where mail can best be delivered.

There is an ATM in the guest areas; an ATM charge will apply. You can also cash checks in the Crew Office onboard to get cash.

US citizens will have federal taxes automatically deducted and may be required to pay state taxes, if applicable. All other nationalities are responsible for filing their own tax forms upon returning to their home countries (as they are self-employed).

You can wire money via the Crew Purser's office. Details are available onboard and rates may vary.

You will be provided with a bar account number, which is your personal number for the duration of your contract onboard each ship. As the entire vessel is cashless, even for guests, you will provide your account number at the bars, salon, and shops in guest areas. In the Crew Bar you can purchase a CrewCard and add money onto it for purchases. At the end of every month you will be required to settle your account.

There are crew laundry facilities where the washers and dryers are free of charge—you just provide the soap. You can also use the dry cleaning onboard, but there is a nominal cost.

Crew members who miss the ship should contact the ship's Agent who will be at the port (the address and phone number are always in the Princess Patter, a daily newsletter for our guests). The Port Agent will arrange transportation to the ship's next port of call. However, it is the responsibility of crew to pay these transportation costs. Crew may be disciplined for the offense and could be terminated. Depending on the port all crew members are required to be back onboard half an hour to an hour prior to sailing time.

While onboard, all crew are medically covered and can visit the Medical Clinic for health concerns. If you need to be medically disembarked during your contract, Princess will provide transportation to a land-based medical facility and repatriate you back home.

If you are not scheduled to work during the time the ship is in port, you can disembark the ship with your supervisor’s approval. Occasionally, there are crew-specific activities or tours to participate in.

Safety requirements dictate that a certain number of crew members be present on each vessel at all times. As such, there may occasionally be times when, although not scheduled to work, you will be required to remain onboard while the ship is in port.

There's a big party culture, but it isn't always as fun as it seems.

Cruise ships have a reputation for fostering a party culture among employees fueled by long hours and cheap drinks available at crew-only bars.

But social drinking can turn into self-medication , according to Brian David Bruns, who worked as a waiter for Carnival Cruise Lines for 13 months between 2003 and 2004 and wrote a book, "Cruise Confidential," about the experience.

Bruns told Business Insider that the stress and loneliness of working on a cruise ship made alcohol an attractive coping mechanism. During his time as a waiter, an outside observer would likely have determined that he developed a drinking problem, Bruns said.

"I'm sure any third party would observe me and say I had a problem," he said. "It can happen very quickly where you go from a social drink to self-medicating because of loneliness."

The food is bad.

Cruise ship workers with lower-paying jobs, like bartenders and waiters, are often at the mercy of the crew cafeteria. There, according to five current or former cruise ship employees, the food leaves much to be desired .

Some described their distaste for the food as a logistical issue. Since many ships employ crew members from around the world, the food served in the crew cafeteria can reflect that variety, making it difficult for some to find food similar to what they would eat at home on a consistent basis. Others described food of poor quality, like chicken with a rubber-like texture or sauteed fish heads.

"The food sucks," a former employee for Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line said.

Workers would keep tuna, granola bars, and other snack foods in their rooms or favor simple foods that require little preparation, like fruit, cereal, and sandwiches, she said.

Not all of the cruise ship employees Business Insider spoke to disliked the food in the crew cafeteria. Two former cruise ship employees said they enjoyed both the quality and variety of the food served to crew members.

You work long hours.

Rather than working traditional five-day weeks, cruise-ship employees often work seven days a week for the duration of their contracts, which can range from about two months to 11 months. Between four and eight months was the most common contract length cited by 31 current and former cruise-ship employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The hours can also be intense, from about eight to nearly 20 hours a day. The employees Business Insider spoke with reported an average of about 12 hours.

A former waiter for Carnival Cruise Line who said he worked about 12 hours a day described his schedule as "crazy" and said it led to fatigue and stress.

"We don't get enough sleep," he said.

Employees have a lot of sex with each other.

Among the many distinctive features of a cruise ship job is the fact that you live with your co-workers. That can result in unusually close bonds among employees and an unusual amount of sex between them.

"There's a lot of sex on cruise ships," said a former casino manager for Holland America Line.

Some compared the hookup culture as being similar to, or even exceeding, that of a college dorm.

But the permissive sexual culture on cruise ships can also lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior. A former Royal Caribbean Cruises employee said one of her managers would make comments about her sexual orientation and criticize her for never changing her hairstyle.

Royal Caribbean did not respond to a request for comment.

Romantic relationships start and end quickly

Romantic relationships among employees develop and end much faster than on land , which, along with frequent turnover, can make long-term relationships difficult.

"One month on a ship is maybe like two years on land, because you spend so much time with these people," said Taylor Sokol, a former cruise director for Holland America.

But the close proximity between employees can make it difficult to maintain a healthy amount of space from a romantic partner, Sokol said.

"It's kind of hard to give someone their space when you live maybe 10 feet away from them."

Almost all of the passengers are pleasant, but some are annoying

A seasoned cruise ship worker has revealed the seven essential gadgets you need in your bag for a seamless and relaxing trip.

Lucy Southerton, 28, has racked up nine-years of experience working on board cruise ships around the world.

Lucy, from Birmingham , regularly shares her insider knowledge on how to have the best time at sea to her YouTube channel - Cruising as Crew .

Forgetting your essentials while you are in the middle of the ocean can be an absolute nightmare.

However, Lucy has shared her top seven must-haves passengers should ensure they have before setting sail.

1. Portable Charger

On the top of the list of the experienced cruise ship worker's essentials was a portable charger.

Urging both crew members and passengers to remember the handy device, Lucy explained that forgetting the power bank can be a nightmare both on-and-off the ship.

There is nothing worse than being in a foreign country and being without a phone and unable to navigate your way around - hence why the cruise ship worker pressed it's importance.

'I always recommend taking a portable charger because there is nothing worse than getting half-way through your day and your phone is on ten percent battery,' she said.

'Then you are like "We still have four more hours in port and now I have no phone."

She added: 'It is actually even worse if you are using your phone for Google Maps and then it dies.'

According to Lucy, this can cause additional issues if you want to use an internet cafe whilst in dock instead of purchasing a wi-fi package.

However, this proves to be impossible if your phone goes flat before you even arrive. 

2. Travel Sized First Aid Kit

Making sure you are stocked up on bandages and plasters is always a good idea - however ensuring you have Imodium, pain killers and sea sickness tablets may even save you some money.

Lucy explained that even though there are shops on ships which sell the medications you may need, the prices are astronomically hiked up.

She revealed: 'You are a captive audience so the price is going to be ramped up because they know you can't get it from anywhere else.

'So while you may be able to get a packet of sea sickness pills for $3 at home, you are going to pay $10 on board for the same pack of sea sickness tablets.'

Similarly to her first essential item, the cruise ship employee also advised her fellow crew members to bring a first aid kit onboard so they can avoid the medication centre.

She added: 'Especially if you are on vacation. You do not want to spend your time waiting around in the medical centre unless you really need to.'

3. Waterproof Phone Case

Protecting your phone from theft or damage is a must regardless of whether you are on holiday or not.

However when you are next to pools of playing children and beaches, the potential damage to your phone is more immediate.

To protect your expensive devise, Lucy recommends bringing along a waterproof phone case so that your phone won't break after a day lying by the pool or a boat excursion.

Retelling her friend's tale, Lucy shared: 'I had a friend who was on vacation and she was lying by the pool because she liked to watch and see everything going on.

'They were doing a belly flop competition and she wasn't really thinking about [her phone].'

But after half an hour of pool fun, the friend eventually realised her phone was directly in the splash zone - but by that point it was too late.

4. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Although you may have bought a ticket for a cruise getaway in a bid to relax for a couple of weeks - others onboard may have different plans.

According to the cruise ship worker, even though most cruises are large enough to escape the noise of the pool - others are not.

On smaller voyages you may walk all the way to the quiet zone on the tail end and still be able to hear the hustle and bustle of the pool area.

So if you want to be prepare for 'inescapable' noise, Lucy recommends a 'good' pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

She explained: 'It just means you can plug yourself in and pretend that you are on your own and that you are in a serene environment.'

The cruise ship worker also explained that headphones could be a good solution for parents having to watch their kids by the noisey pool or for bookworms wanting to tune out the thudding of their neighbouring cabin.

5. Lightweight Backpack

Some may be more used to taking a small handbag with them whilst adventuring new cities.

But Lucy is firm in the belief that a small lightweight back-pack will prepare you for any situation - especially for parents.

Sometimes a handbag may not be big enough to tuck away everything you may need whilst off the ship.

So to be prepared to the best of your ability, the cruise ship worker advises taking a backpack - so you can also have free hands. 

'You are going to want to take sunscreen a bottle of water you are going to want to be prepared for every eventuality,' she explained.

'You are going to want your hands free to explore the ports.'

6. Universal Adaptor

Dubbing it one of the 'best purchases' she had ever made, Lucy was especially fond of her universal adaptor.

It can be a nightmare when you arrive to a location and realise you do not have the correct plug to charge all your essential gadgets for the trip.

Equally on a cruise it can be unpredictable what plugs they may have, so a universal adaptor won't only save you suitcase space - it will save you a lot of hassle too, according to Lucy. 

'Instead of taking European or American adaptors  you can just take one adaptor and it will have you sorted for all eventualities,' she said.

'I have done it before. You pack thinking you know what the plug sockets are going they aren't there and some cruise ship don't have USB ports.

'So a universal adaptor is definitely something I would recommend.'

Ensuring you have installed the right apps for the duration of your journey was must do on Lucy's list.

Although an app isn't a physical gadget, it is an essential piece of technology that could make your holiday a lot easier according to the cruise ship worker.

According to Lucy, you should make sure you have downloading every app you think you may need prior to getting onboard to avoid any possible hassle.

The cruise ship worker of nine years explained that even if you buy a WiFi-package for your time on the ship, downloading any software of documents will be a hassle.

'So any apps you want to download for your cruise whether that's the cruise line's app, google maps or google translate - any apps you may need to you navigate the cruise or time on port - please make sure you download these before you get on the cruise.'

She added: 'You don't want to be running around the port to try and find WiFi to download app trust me I have been there it is just not fun.'
