Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and NCL TV Channels (Full Listing)

There’s no one that goes on a cruise to sit around and watch TV, but sometimes it can be a great activity. After a day in the sun and humidity of the Caribbean, we’ll admit that we love nothing more than to chill out in a cool cabin, watching some television or Netflix .

We also know that we are not alone. That’s why we’ve rounded up the channel listings for two of the biggest cruise lines: Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Below we have full details on the channel listings. One thing to keep in mind is that we’ve never seen the same channels twice on a cruise line. It seems to be that the offerings vary regularly and from ship to ship.

Therefore the channel listings below should give you an idea of what’s available, but could be different from what you see on your cruise.

What to Know About TV Channels on a Cruise

If you want the full run-down of what to expect from television on a cruise ship, then see our guide here . In general, however, you should set your expectations a little lower than what you might see on land.

Cruise ships typically have a couple of dozen channels, and most of those are related to the cruise itself. There are often channels for port shopping, a guide to what’s going on around the ship, safety channels and more.

Then there are typically channels that you won’t recognize showing everything from kids programming to movies. The number of well-known stations (e.g. ESPN, Travel Channel, Discovery, etc.) can usually be counted on one hand. Local broadcast channels such as ABC, CBS, or NBC aren’t available either.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here are the channel listings from a recent cruise for two major cruise lines: Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Note: TV lineups seem to change slightly every time you sail. The channels available and the order may vary for your cruise.

Carnival Cruise TV Channel Listings

Carnival logo painted on a ship

You can see that there aren’t a ton of channels on Carnival — just about two dozen. In fact, many of the biggest cable channels aren’t available at all, like ESPN. Don’t worry though, if there is a big game you want to watch, it will be shown somewhere on the ship — most likely the SKYBOX Sports Bar that’s on many ships or the casino.

As for the rest of the stations, you have things like Nickelodeon for the kids, Discovery, Travel Channel, and some additional cable channels. Much of the rest is a ton of cruise line-specific stations. Also, the channels start at 11 instead of 2, like you would see on land. Notably absent are any networks like ABC or NBC.

Here are all of Carnival’s TV channels from a recent cruise:

  • Channel 11: Channel Guide
  • Channel 13: Safety Information
  • Channel 14: Cruise Life TV
  • Channel 15: Cruise Live TV 2
  • Channel 16: Carnival Adventures
  • Chanel 17: Choose Shopping
  • Channel 18: Choose Fun Ashore
  • Channel 19: Ocean View
  • Channel 20: Complimentary Movie 1
  • Channel 21: Complimentary Movie 2
  • Channel 22: CBSN
  • Channel 23: TCM
  • Channel 24: Cartoon Network
  • Channel 25: Nickelodeon
  • Channel 26: HGTV
  • Channel 27: Food Network
  • Channel 28: Travel Channel
  • Channel 29: Discovery Channel
  • Channel 30: Good to Know
  • Channel 31: What’s Happening (Audible)
  • Channel 32: Map Channel
  • Channel 33: Forward Camera View
  • Channel 34: Lido Camera View
  • Channel 35: Music Channel

Royal Caribbean Cruise TV Channel Listings

Listings for Royal Caribbean cabin TV channels.

The TV channel lineup on Royal Caribbean is similar to Carnival in that the list is relatively short, along with a number of stations you won’t find anywhere and/or are related to the cruise.

One thing to note is that we find Royal Caribbean to offer more sports programming such as ESPN compared to Carnival. As well, it seems that during football season more games are fed into the cabin TV, allowing you to watch while at sea.

  • Channel 1: Royal Entertainment
  • Channel 2: Cruise Compass
  • Channel 3: On the Map
  • Channel 4: Peek-a-Boo TV (Kids 3 and under)
  • Channel 5: Junior Cruisers
  • Channel 6: Teens Stream
  • Channel 7: Health and Safety Channel
  • Channel 8: BBC World News
  • Channel 9: MSNBC
  • Channel 10: Fox News
  • Channel 11: NextCruise
  • Channel 12: Shore Excursions
  • Channel 13: Shopping Ashore
  • Channel 14: Daily Deals
  • Channel 15: Prime One
  • Channel 16: Prime Favorites
  • Channel 17: National Geographic
  • Channel 18: BBC HD
  • Channel 19: Movies Now and Then
  • Channel 20: Red Bull TV
  • Channel 21: 21
  • Channel 22: ESPN (International Feed)
  • Channel 23: TVE International
  • Channel 24: 24
  • Channel 25: Music Videos
  • Channel 26: Special Events/Music
  • Channel 27: Music Only A
  • Channel 28: Music Only B
  • Channel 29: Music Only C

Note: We’ve noticed that channel listings change often on Royal Caribbean. We have been on cruises where ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN U, and SEC Network are all available, while they aren’t available on others.

Norwegian (NCL) Cruise Line TV Channel Listings

TV channel listing for a Norwegian cruise.

Like its rivals Royal Caribbean and Carnival, NCL has a lineup that’s a bit different than what you’d see on land.

As you can see, most channels are content for the cruise line and the ship. Meanwhile, MSNBC, Fox News, and CNBC are the only widely-known U.S. cable channels in the lineup.

The movie channels do show recent release movies 24 hours per day. Sports 24 features international sporting events from nightly NBA games to cricket matches in Australia.

  • Channel 10: Safety Channel
  • Channel 11: Ship Info
  • Channel 12: Bridge Cam
  • Channel 13: ShorEx/CruiseNext
  • Channel 14: Feel Free
  • Channel 15: Port Info Channel
  • Channel 16: Activities Channel
  • Channel 17: Onboard Offerings
  • Channel 18: Shopping Channel
  • Channel 19: SkyToday
  • Channel 20: Sky TV
  • Channel 21: Action Movies
  • Channel 22: Drama Movies
  • Channel 23: Comedy Movies
  • Channel 24: Family Movies
  • Channel 26: BBC
  • Channel 27: MSNBC
  • Channel 28: CNBC
  • Channel 29: Fox News
  • Channel 30: Sport24
  • Channel 31: Prime Journeys
  • Channel 32: Special Feed

Bottom Line on TV on a Cruise

While no one goes on a cruise specifically for TV, you should still know that if you do want to relax and watch some of the tube, the options are somewhat limited.

Given the lack of channels, we suggest bringing your own device to allow you to watch any movies or TV. Most shops offer streaming if you get the premium Internet package. As well, Netflix and other services allow you to download shows beforehand to watch without a connection.

You have Fox but not MSNBC. No thanks

On Royal Caribbean: Only channel worth watching is TBS but it’s only in Spanish?? Ridiculous! Oceanview Channel would be nice (since our cabin doesn’t even have a window) but it’s not on the lineup. Oh well, guess I’ll just play my iPod/speaker in the room. :-/

Shame on you Carnival!! We are platinum with you and have always sang praises about Carnival but maybe not so much now. You are not going to miss out on casino or drink money just because you have 3 major networks tv in cabins Really Carnival we didn’t expect this from you!!!. None of the other lines have done this. Maybe time to look at Oceania, NCL RCCL,HAL,Celebirty????

Carnival dropped all the network channels for cabin TVs in January. They never said why, but many people believe it’s another cutback. They’ve had a lot of those recently, including the quality of the food in the MDR.

Sorry to tell you, but carnival has apparently dropped all network TV channels. No explanation was given.

That certainly seems to be the case from what we are hearing.

No network tv on royal. bummer!

I was recently on the Liberty and they didn’t have all of those channels in our rooms; the sports bars had local(?) channels and ESPN, but all of the feed from TBS, TNT and TCM were from the Spanish Latin American feed. Not that I’m complaining; I wasn’t there to watch TV the entire time, it jut made for a nice reprieve.

I enjoy watching some tv right before going to bed. I just wish the connections were better. The last cruise, the channels kept going in and out.

We didn’t have that issue, but our last cruise the remote barely worked. Had to press the channel button three times before it registered!

cruise tv programme

Across a week onboard we follow the highs and lows of life at sea and get to take in stunning locations, treats and tipples and the culture and commerce of everywhere they visit. But will worse things happen at sea, or will it all be plain sailing?

For our three lucky groups of intrepid travellers it is Day One and they get to explore the Italian capital Rome before they board the cruise ship Regal Princess as she sets off on a week-long cruise around the Med.

Newbie cruisers and best friends from Leeds, Andy and Rachel toss coins and make wishes at the famous Trevi fountain before indulging in a few scoops of traditional gelato. Cruising pros, The Walker Green family, from the Isle of Wight, combine home schooling and holiday as kids Noah and Maisie learn what it takes to be a soldier at an Ancient Roman battle camp.

And Cruise lover Carla navigates her girl gang straight to the ship as she is keen to get a head start on her mission to convert little sister Jamie to life on the high seas, with a little help from their pal Karen.

After a day exploring all that Rome has to offer, our travellers board the ship ready to check out their new home for the next week before enjoying an evening of mini golf, cocktails and fun as they set sail for Naples on the first night of their holiday.

Lights. Camera. Anchors up — because we’re making our TV debut on Channel 5 this Sunday, starring in The Cruise; a brand new 20-episode series narrated by the enigmatic Sheridan Smith. Produced by Title Role Productions, the first episode premieres in the UK at 9 p.m. this Sunday, June 19th. And you really can’t miss it.

Filmed across both our Scarlet Lady and Valiant throughout the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, The Cruise takes audiences behind the velvet rope for a glimpse into the lives of our incredible Crew and Sailors (like you) as they sail across the open ocean on our adults-only voyages.

Stopping at some of the world’s most dazzling coastal cities and islands like Bimini, Ibiza, Marseilles, and Cannes; the series gives you a peek into the inner workings of our ships and what it takes to create our amazing onboard experience. Tasked with “making ship happen,” our Crew navigates the world of quirky Sailor requests, last-minute weather challenges, and unexpected surprises for milestone celebrations.

From Captain Giovanni, a seasoned Italian seafarer with decades of experience, to Selma, one of the brand’s RockStar Agents whose role includes making Sailors feel like Richard Branson, The Cruise shines a light on the people who make our voyages so special. Because at the end of the day, it’s about creating unmatched experiences you can’t find anywhere else. And we want to show you how that happens.

So if you’re in the UK, head to Channel 5 at 9 pm this Sunday, June 19th, to watch The Cruise documentary series featuring us, Virgin Voyages. And if you’re not in the UK, or if you have plans (we get it), you can stream it anytime on My5.

We’re ready for our close up.

The Good Ship Murder plot

The Good Ship Murder follows former detective Jack Grayling (Shayne Ward) who is living his best life working as an entertainer on a cruise ship. There he meets First Officer Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley), a woman in a man’s world, with plenty to prove. Life on the ship is exciting and glamorous but there are jealousies, rivalries and deep divides hidden below the surface and, as the ship docks at its first port of call, a passenger is found murdered. This tragedy is followed by more murders and unlikely duo Jack and Kate must join together to solve the mysteries.

Jack (Shayne Ward) and Kate (Catherine Tyldesley) sit at a table on board the ship analysing some clues. He is wearing a dark blue shirt and stone-coloured trousers, she is in her Officer's uniform of a short-sleeved white shirt with First Officer epaulettes and a black skirt

The Good Ship Murder cast — Shayne Ward as Jack Grayling

It really is a dream come true! Getting to work alongside my good friend Catherine again has been magical, and all while cruising around the Mediterranean …. heaven. I can’t wait for everyone to meet Jack Grayling and his unlikely team.

"Jack spent around 20 years as part of Greater Manchester CID, but something made him leave the force - you’ll have to wait to see what that was He decided to have a complete change of career, and pursue his first love of becoming a singer. He’s a very likeable guy, he has a great rapport with everyone on board the ship."

* Shayne Ward shot to fame when he won The X-Factor in 2005. Off the back of his success, he released four albums before going on to play Aidan Connor in Coronation Street . Episode 1: Friday October 13 The glamour of a luxury cruise takes a dark turn when a crimewave breaks out on board — and it’s down to two sleuthing members of the crew to investigate! The ship’s cabaret singer Jack Grayling (Shayne Ward) used to be a detective, so when a passenger meets an untimely end in the French port of La Rochelle, Jack finds himself drawing upon his dormant detective skills. JAkc seems to have a great rapport with everyone on board with the possible exception of ambitious First Officer Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley), who seems resistant to Jack’s charms — but her keen intelligence makes her an excellent partner in crime-solving. * Jack's song performance this episode is Daydream Believer by The Monkees. The Good Ship Murder episode 1 recap: Who killed Nathan?

Episode 2: Friday October 20 There’s a VIP guest on the ship as Stephanie St. James, author of the bestselling Inspector Cordeiro novels, joins the cruise for a book signing and a tour of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, where the books are set. But when Stephanie (Terry Bamberger) receives a death threat and her husband is murdered soon after, it seems an obsessed fan is re-enacting the plot of her latest book, Betrayal At Belém! Cabaret singer Jack (Shayne Ward) and Cordeiro superfan First Officer Kate (Catherine Tyldesley) are determined to unmask the killer - but can they catch the murderer before they strike again? * Jack's song performance this episode is Red Light Spells Danger by Billy Ocean. The Good Ship Murder episode 2 recap: Who killed Nero?

Episode 3: Friday October 27 The ship docks in Casablanca, the hometown of crew member Jamil (Zak Douglas) - who gets to step up from being Jack’s (Shayne Ward) chirpy sidekick as we learn more about Jamil’s life prior to joining the ship. Jack, meanwhile, is drafted in to lead a tour of the Medina, but things go disastrously wrong when a charity figurehead is killed while chasing a bag-snatcher. And with First Officer Kate (Catherine Tyldesley) busy doing her actual job for once, Jack and Jamil must start the investigation without her - though the lure of an intriguing mystery soon proves impossible for Kate to resist… * Jack sings Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader

Episode 4: Friday November 3 There’s a lovely surprise in store for First Officer Kate (Catherine Tyldesley) when her old school friend Cecile Ray (Olivia Marie Fearn) boards the ship for her extravagant wedding. It’s all fun and games as Jack (Shayne Ward) and Kate get swept up in the stag and hen parties, but the mood comes crashing down when there’s a dramatic kidnapping during the ship’s stop in Palma. Jack investigates and ends up reconnecting with old friend Detective Lucia Perez (Laura Buhagiar) - while Kate is shocked to receive a proposal of her own… * Jack sings Needles and Pins by The Searchers

Episode 5: Friday November 10 All eyes are on the on-board casino with the vessel hosting an important poker game during a cruise through the Bay of Biscay. The top player in the contest is Nikolai Volkov (Yuval Goldmann), whose smug attitude doesn’t earn him many friends. As the tensions among the players turn deadly, Jack and Kate investigate once again - but will they uncover a card-carrying killer in their midst? "In the poker game, you get to see a real rush of the glamour and the adrenaline involved,’ says Catherine Tyldesley. "That’s the great thing about this show - each episode is set in a separate, amazing location, and they all have a very different feel." It’s not just the poker tournament that’s raising tensions on the ship either, as a job offer risks bringing Jack and Kate’s unlikely crime-solving partnership to a premature end. * Jack sings Every 1’s A Winner by Hot Chocolate

Episode 6: Friday November 17 The ship arrives in Sicily where dying Roberto disembarks with his three children and his new wife to return to his homeland and make arrangements for his businesses after he’s gone. However, it looks as though Roberto’s life expectancy could be shorter than he realised when he receives the infamous Sicilian ‘kiss of death’ - but has he been marked for murder by the Mafia, or could someone closer to home be responsible? After a deadly development, it’s once again up to Jack and Kate to piece all the clues together…can they solve the case? Episode 7: Friday November 24 Tensions are high among the ship’s entertainment team as the star rollerskating duo appear to be on the verge of falling out with each other - and when the vessel docks in Barcelona, one of them doesn’t survive to make it back on board! It’s a particularly tough case for Jack (Shayne Ward) and Kate (Catherine Tyldesley), because they’re investigating the death of someone they considered a friend. But as the pair search for killer, they realise perhaps they didn’t know the deceased, or his performing partner, quite as well as they thought they did…

Episode 8: Friday December 1 There’s excitement onboard when legendary crooner Vida Devine (Kate Robbins) joins the ship for a special performance when it docks at Malta’s capital Valletta. But before she can take to the stage, Vida is found dead, strangled by a string of rosary beads! Sleuthing duo Jack and Kate initially suspect Vida’s shifty manager Connor Williams (Ian Reddington) after they discover Vida wanted to reveal she lied about penning the hit song that made her famous, and that Connor had stolen the words and lyrics from an unknown songwriter decades earlier! But it’s not long before another shocking secret from Vida’s past throws their suspicions about Connor into doubt Meanwhile, Jack finally reveals to Kate the real reason he left Greater Manchester CID. As the series comes to a close, will they get their happy-ever-after?

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Read: The Easiest Way to Renew Your Passport

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.
