These 6 Cruises Have Airfare Included in the Price

Your vacation just got so much easier.

cruise with free airfare

One of the best things about cruising is being able to see several different places without having to book flights or trains from one place to the next. But usually, you still have to arrange travel to the cruise itself.

To save you the trouble, some cruises come with flights built right in — whether they're round-trip from your home city to a foreign port, or short-haul jaunts between two stops on your itinerary. From jetliners to Athens to connections in Argentina , your vacation will feel a little easier when there's one less thing to book.

Airfare is covered either as part of the standard cruise package or as an upgrade. Note that the upcharge can be pricey — pricier than booking the flight yourself, that is — but if it's convenience you're after (so you can focus on packing for your big adventure rather than spending your time poring over airline sites), these cruises are it.

This week-long cruise sails from Tenerife to Madeira, La Palma, Fuerteventura, and back to Tenerife, providing plenty of time to explore each island before hopping back on the 3,100-passenger Azura. You do still have to get yourself to and from Manchester, U.K. for the included return flight, though.

Good Deal? Everything to Know About Norwegian’s “Free At Sea” Sale

Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Free at Sea” deal is one of the most appealing cruise line offers out there. After all, everyone likes getting something for free.

But is it a good deal? It is worth buying? And what details should you know when you book?

Norwegian Pearl in port

While cruise passengers have gotten used to shelling out plenty of cash for extras on the ship after they board, not everyone likes being nickeled-and-dimed.

That’s why this offer aims to provide many of the extras you’d normally buy on a trip, all included in your cruise fare at a price that’s normally less than if you booked them all separately. That gives you a more all-inclusive atmosphere on the ship, instead of worrying about more spending once on the ship.

With Free at Sea, you book a cruise and get any number of “free” perks included with your cruise. While what’s offered to passengers does change slightly from time to time, the traditional deal offers a lineup of perks for you to select from:

  • Free open bar
  • Free specialty dining
  • Free shore excursions
  • Free third/fourth guests

So with the deal you can pay one price and then get drinks for the duration of your trip, wi-fi, shore excursions, and more.

Norwegian has been offering some version of the sale for some time now. And anecdotally, it’s one of the most appealing offers out there. Who doesn’t want to get free drinks or free specialty dining tacked onto their cruise? In fact, it promises to take away so many of the extra charges that creep into the cost of a cruise these days.

But while the sale sounds mouth-watering, there are definitely some things you will want to know before you purchase your fare in order to get the best deal… and avoid any surprises.

In This Article...

The Number of Perks May Depend On Your Cabin Type (But Often Includes All Perks For Every Cabin)

First things first, while you can get all the perks included with your cruise, the number of freebies you can select may depend on the type of cabin that you purchase. Often no matter which cabin type you book, all the perks are included. Other times, it may be that the higher grade of cabin you choose, the more picks you receive. The offer can change occasionally.

If you book at a time when not everything is included, then if you pick a studio or inside cabin, you might only be offered one or two free perks. Oceanview, balcony, and mini-suites will usually get to pick more offers offers, while suites, and The Haven cabins normally get to select all the perks.

But it seems limiting the perks based on cabin type is becoming less common . For example, as of this writing all cabins — regardless of if they are inside rooms or top-of-the-line suites — are able to get all the perks included in their fare.

Sometimes More Perks Are Offered

Norwegian Sky in Nassau

In addition to changing the number of perks included with the room you book, NCL also adjusts the actual perks themselves at times. Typically, this means adding a perk or two occasionally to sweeten the offer.

What you’ll find is the five base “freebies” don’t change. They include:

But occasionally the cruise line adds in other deals. Most recently we’ve seen seen free airfare for second guests (for those flying to the port) and free cruise credit to put toward booking another trip while onboard the ship.

The Free at Sea Offer Runs Consistently

With the ability to get all the perks included with your cruise, it can be tempting to want to jump at the deal so that you don’t miss out. In fact, normally you’ll see a timer on the Norwegian website counting down until the sale ends.

In this case, you don’t seem to have much to worry about. The offer has run in some form or another (there are small tweaks here and there) for years. And while we don’t check every day, we can’t think of a time in recent history that it hasn’t been offered.

So yes, the sale may change slightly, but some form is seemingly always offered. Don’t think you have to rush to buy or risk missing out. If the time isn’t quite right to book, you’ll most likely see something similar when you are ready.

Rooms Without Perks Are Less Expensive (If You Can Find Them)

One of the things you might not realize is that you can purchase cabins on the ship without the perks offered. Why would you want to do that? Sailing without the perks is actually cheaper than buying the same cabin as part of the sale.

Take a balcony cabin we found for 7-day Alaskan cruise, for instance. The price per person for a balcony cabin that included the Free at Sea offer was $2,369 per person.

Norwegian also offers a “Sail Away” balcony, which is a room that’s not part of the promotion, and the cruise line picks your room. In return, you get a cheaper rate. In this case, it was $2,319 per person.

So the Free at Sea deal was actually $50 more per person — or $100 extra for a couple sailing together.

Remember that for that price difference you get all the perks and get to choose your actual cabin on the ship. As well, if you plan to buy things like drink packages ($109 per person, per day), you still come out way ahead despite the higher price. Still, it is a higher price to pay for the same type of room.

If the perks aren’t something you’ll use, then it may not be worth it for you to book the offer. But for most people, it likely will be worth the extra cost.

One thing to note is that it seems the fares without the offer often say they are sold out on NCL’s website. It may be difficult for you to find a fare without the offer.

You May HAVE to Buy the Free at Sea Offer

In years past, there was a rather large difference between the cruise fares with the Free at Sea offer and those sail away balconies (on the order of hundreds of dollars). Then that difference seemed to get smaller and smaller to where booking with the offer was a no-brainer. Now, it can be seemingly tough to find a cruise without the offer included.

During our most recent price checks, we looked at several cruises departing in the weeks ahead all the way to more than a year out. On none of them were we able to find a sail away room available. While the option was shown for all cruises, the website labeled them all sold old — even for cruises leaving more than a year from now. Meanwhile, there were still options available with the Free at Sea perks included.

In other words, if you wanted a fare without the offer, it may be tough to find.

You Still Have to Pay Gratuity… Even on Free Things

One of the biggest draws to the Norwegian sale is that you can get free open bar on your trip. With the price of alcohol on a cruise being high (think $10-14 for a cocktail or about $6-8 for a beer), having free bar privileges can be a huge money saver. Meanwhile, Norwegian charges $109 for an unlimited drink package. On a 7-day trip, that’s hundreds of dollars you’re saving by having it included.

But with the free drink package (as well as other things like specialty restaurants), you are still on the hook for gratuities. With Norwegian, that’s an automatic 20% on the value of the package, or $21.80 per person, per day. For two people, that’s $43.60 each day.

So on a 7-day cruise, a couple will end up paying more than $300 in gratuities for your “free” drinks.

It’s similar with the specialty dining package. There, you will see gratuities on the free meals with the offer, which are paid when booking.

You can opt out of the free drink package and specialty dining to avoid paying the gratuities. (See more on that below.)

You Don’t Have to Select a Perk If You Don’t Want It

Drinks on a bar

With the extra gratuity cost of some perks like free drinks and specialty dining, there can actually be a disadvantage to having it included on your cruise if you don’t use these offers. That’s ok. When you book, you don’t have to take advantage of every single perk that’s offered.

When making your reservation, you have the choice to opt out of those packages that require a gratuity charge such as the drink package and specialty dining. That way if you don’t think you’ll get your money’s worth, you don’t have to pay the gratuity charge.

Understand the Terms & Conditions Before Booking (Lots of Fine Print)

In general the perks from Norwegian are straightforward, but there are some terms you should know about.

Gratuities: We’ve mentioned that gratuities are still charged even on free perks. But if you take advantage of the third and fourth guests in a cabin sail free perk, they will still be charged a daily service charge of $20 per person on the ship like any other passenger.

Specialty Dining: While other things to know include that the free specialty dining perk is only for a some meals (two per person in total for a 7-day cruise if booking a balcony cabin, for example but only one per person in a studio, inside, or oceanview) and gratuities are also charged on the value of the package.

Wi-Fi: The free wi-fi offer is for only 75 minutes on cruises less than seven days or 150 minutes for trips of 7-11 days. It is not unlimited.

Shore Excursions: While the shore excursions are labeled as “free” in fact, it is actually a $50 credit for the first guest, per excursion. If your excursion is more, then you’ll need to pay the difference. And NCL says the “offer is application to first guest on the cruise reservation” — not multiple guests in the cabin.

For the full terms and conditions of the offers, you can click here . And here is a breakdown of what’s included from Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Free At Sea Plus” Offer Could Be Better For You

Maybe you’ve made the choice to book Free at Sea instead of a basic cabin without the perks. There’s one more choice to consider, and that is Free at Sea versus Free at Sea Plus.

Norwegian has created an upgrade with the following perks included:

  • Premium Plus Beverage Package (includes all top-shelf spirits)
  • Two additional specialty dining meals
  • $50 shore excursion credit per tour for both first and second passenger
  • Unlimited wi-fi for first and second passenger

Compared to the regular Free at Sea deal, this includes a higher-tier drink package , more specialty dining meals, an additional $50 credit per shore excursion, and unlimited wi-fi instead of a bundle of minutes.

The price runs $49 per person, per day ($29 pp for kids and $42 pp if traveling solo).

Given the list prices of these services, you do come out ahead with this package if you used the features. For instance, the Premium Plus Beverage Package is $29 more per day while unlimited wi-fi runs $30-40 per day. That alone is more than the $49 per day that you’ll spend. Add on a couple of uses of the $50 shore excursion credit and the additional meals, and you’re well in the black.

But these are also extras that you may not need. For instance, many passengers would be just fine with the basic drink package. Some may not need unlimited wi-fi. Others may take only an excursion or two during the trip, meaning the discount isn’t as big a deal.

Before you book, you’ll want to do the math to figure if the daily cost ($98 a day for a couple traveling) is worth the upgrade.

Check Prices on Airfare Offers

One of the perks that can be popular for people living a distance from the port is free airfare. Often, it is free for the second guest on the cruise, although the offer specifics can vary.

As you might expect, there are some caveats when it comes to free flights. Most notably, airfare charges will vary depending on where you’re flying from. You’ll be able to select your departure city, and then it will tell you the price of airfare for the guest that does have to pay.

In that case, it’s worth a quick search of flight-search websites like Kayak to see what the airfare rate will be. In a recent search, we found flights on our own for several hundred dollars cheaper than what we were quoted on the NCL website. However, when you consider the free airfare for the second guest, the Free at Sea offer was better overall.

Good Deal? Likely, but Do the Math Before You Buy

For many people, selecting the Free at Sea offer is a no-brainer (or may be required if a sail away fare isn’t available), and they will end up saving a considerable amount of money.

But if you aren’t a big drinker or plan to drive to the port instead of fly, or don’t care about shore excursions, it could be that buying the cheaper cabin is worth it for you. After all, you’ll have to pay gratuities on the drink package, still have to pay for some flights, and pay gratuities on specialty restaurant dining.

So if you won’t use the perks that are offered, be sure to consider if the deal is worth paying the higher price. If not, then you might be better off sailing without them. Even so, there’s a reason the offer is popular — for many people it’s a smart move.

Ncl offers additional 50% off from normal 50% off. It says upon reservation to see as it is added to latitudes account. So in order to actually see total cost I have to book the cruise?

Please Beware, If you take the “Free” drink package you will be charged the $19.80 per day regardless of weather you drink or not, we do not drink. When I asked for a refund of the $200 gratuities Norwegian now says it is a service charge and not refundable. So the “Free” drink package cost us $200, IMO very dishonest and misleading.

Also they advertise a Bingo with a $5000 prize. AFTER you buy the tickets then then tell you the “RULES” You have to get a full card in 47 or less numbers to get this prize. It has about the same odds as getting struck by lightning.

At this point if you are considering a cruise with this company please investigate their claims carefully. This is my 4th cruise and the first with Norwegian while the entertainment and food were decent their business practices are very suspect .

I bough the cheaper inside cabin and got 2 free perks and 50 dolars OBC. The gratuities are included we don’t have to pay more. https://www.ncl.com/es/en/free-at-sea “Offer is applicable to all categories including IX, OX, BX and MX (Sail Away Categories).” “20% gratuities on the retail value of the Premium Beverage Package ($19.80 USD per person per day) and/or Soda Package ($1.59 USD per person per day) are included.”

Looks like you’re booking a cruise in Europe. For U.S. departures, there is still the $19.80 in gratuities you have to pay:

“Guest is responsible for 20% gratuities on the retail value of the Premium Beverage Package ($19.80 per person per day) and/or Soda Package ($1.59 per person per day) prior to cruise.”

What a joke, only get the one free perk when you book inside cabin, if you do not buy the least expensive inside cabin. If you upgrade (pay more) you could get the one free perk of $50 per cabin. Just spoke to Norwegian on the phone, to get the correct information. I Asked about the cost to use the bowling alley on the pearl, which I saw on a review from a past guest was $5. But this rep told me there is no bowling alley, now I am confused. Any body got any more interesting tips around things we should know about before we sail. Love to hear from you.

Been on the Pearl 5 years ago. Yes they have a bowling alley. I believe 4 lanes only. Line to use it was crazy. Not worth it. Also this ship had very few bars and lounges. They used the space to put in many specialty (pay extra) restaurants. I’d never go back on the Pearl.

Oceania Cruises Launches Simply MORE Program to Offer More Included Amenities

Oceania Cruises Launches Simply MORE Program to Offer More Included Amenities

With free airfare, shore excursions, and an upgraded drink package, Oceania’s simply MORE aims to give cruisers an all-inclusive experience.

cruise with free airfare

Premium-plus cruise line Oceania Cruises has announced a new program, simply MORE , that will offer cruisers a range of complimentary amenities including free roundtrip airfare, free airport transfers, free shore excursions, and a free beverage package for every guest.

The new program, which will apply to all new reservations beginning July 1, 2023 for sailings departing October 1, 2023 or later has been designed to elevate the guest experience according to a press release from Oceania.

Simply MORE will replace Oceania’s OLife Choice program, which offered a limited range of inclusions.

“Over the past 20 years, we have continued to adapt and evolve to the wants and needs of our valued trade partners and guests. We are always seeking to enhance the Oceania Cruises experience and raise the bar in offering the best value in luxury cruising. So, we asked our key audiences, guests, and travel partners, what they wanted, and that was simplicity, choice and value. Through our new  simply  MORE value promise, they now have all three,” said  Frank A. Del Rio , President of Oceania Cruises.

Simply MORE from Oceania will make the brand more all-inclusive

Oceania’s new  simply  MORE promise will include an easier arrival and departure experience with complimentary roundtrip airfare and airport transfers, a shore excursion credit of up to $1,600 per stateroom, and a comprehensive beverage package (available during lunch and dinner) featuring dozens of vintage Champagnes, premium wines, and international beers.

The new inclusions are in addition to Oceania’s already-included amenities, which feature gourmet dining at specialty restaurants, complimentary soft drinks including fine teas and coffees, sodas, and Vero still and sparkling water, 24-hour room service, unlimited Wi-Fi, and fitness classes.

Related: Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

“Thanks to the launch of  simply  MORE, our guests will enjoy even more value, more choice, and more convenience than ever before,” said Del Rio.

“For me, the cornerstone of this exciting new value promise is the generous credit offered to every guest to be spent on shore excursions of their choice. Oceania Cruises is renowned for our imaginative and immersive itineraries, journeying to every part of the globe, which are enhanced even further by our industry-leading array of enriching adventures ashore,” Del Rio continued.

Using the simply MORE shore excursion credit on an Oceania cruise

Oceania Cruises offers more than 8,000 unique tour choices in its 600-plus ports of call. Cruisers can choose to explore iconic cities, lesser-known gems, and tranquil islands during a single sailing thanks to the line’s destination-intensive itineraries.

cruise with free airfare

With the new simply MORE program, Oceania guests will now be able to take advantage of a generous shore excursion credit to choose tours on each voyage—but the credit amount will vary based on the length of your itinerary.

Shore excursion credit amounts will range from $600 per stateroom for an itinerary of seven to nine days, up to $1,600 per stateroom on sailings of 31 to 35 days.

The included credit can be redeemed for any available excursions, including Food & Wine Trails Tours and Culinary Discovery Tours , sustainability-focused Go Green Tours as well as luxurious private tours with a dedicated car and driver.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll get for a free shore excursion credit on different Oceania sailing lengths, per stateroom:

According to Del Rio, “The  simply  MORE shore excursion credit can be applied to any and all of our tours, from witnessing an active volcano from a helicopter in Montserrat and learning how to tend and herd sheep at a shepherd school in Northern Spain on one of our Go Local tours to enjoying an insider’s view of iconic modernistic buildings in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on a Beyond Blueprints excursion, which takes travelers behind the scenes of landmark buildings with an architectural guide.”

Simply MORE’s new included drink package

Oceania’s new  simply  MORE concept, which replaces the brand’s OLife Choice program, will now include a beverage package featuring free premium-label Champagnes and wines along with over 20 American and international beers, during lunch and dinner.

cruise with free airfare

“Our guests appreciate fine food and fine wine, and we have always included all gourmet specialty dining. Now we are thrilled to be able to offer them a generous array of wines—not just house pours—to choose from, plus Champagnes and beers to enjoy too. With over three dozen wine choices on offer, and a broad range of beers as well as premium-label sparkling wines and Champagnes, there is something to suit every palate,” Del Rio commented.

Free airfare and transfers for Oceania cruisers

Oceania’s new press release states that cruisers will enjoy free roundtrip airfare and airport transfers as part of the simply MORE program.

The brand hasn’t yet released details about potential restrictions or exclusions, so check Oceania’s Promotions Terms and Conditions page for the most updated information.

Included Wi-Fi with the simply MORE program on Oceania

With Oceania’s old OLife Choice program, the free internet amenity included one login per stateroom, except for cruisers sailing in Owner’s, Vista, and Oceania Suites, who received two logins per suite.

According to Oceania’s latest release, the new simply MORE concept promises to offer unlimited Wi-Fi for all guests.

If the credit is only for shore excursions, it is a downgrade. I usually book my own experiences while onshore or many times in the Caribbean, I just enjoy the ship and the spa. Also, I drink very little so paying a higher cruise fare for something I don’t really use is a downgrade. One reason I enjoy Oceania is you pay for what you actually want or use. If I go on Regent, I have paid for their shore excursions which are great for the older crowd, but I prefer to do my own thing and paying for something twice isn’t smart. So I have chosen Oceania over Regent or Silversea because of this

Hi Travis, you bring up some very valid points! Although lots of cruisers would enjoy having the included amenities (if you were planning on buying them à la carte anyway), it doesn't make sense if you're not planning to use them. I'd 100% rather that shore excursion credit be a spa credit instead :D Thanks for stopping by and happy cruising!

Free airfare for second Guest

Cool Cruiser

Currently have a 11 day cruise booked for June 2022 out of Iceland. Received all the free at sea and 15% latitude member discount at the time. Current offer as of today (10/29), is free gratuities and free airfare for second guest. I am looking into changing my booking  to take advantage of the free gratuities and airfare, which is currently charging a total of only 979 round trip air for two with transfers included and am trying to figure if worth it. Cannot look at air prices as trip is 29 months out. My questions are  these: Has anyone have any experience with booking airfare thru Norwegion to Europe, (Iceland),whether a promotion or not. Is the price they quote at booking what you actually pay or can it change? Do the flights have many connections? Are the flights scheduled that you arrive the day of the cruise and depart the day you disembark? We embark in one port Reykjavik, and disembark in another,  Southampton. Does this effect the price?

Any info would help. (And if this info is in another post, please advise)Thanks.

2021 is scheduled to be NCL’s first year sailing out of Reykjavik so no one really has experience of NCL flying them there.

The free airfare for second guest is a relatively new promo. NCL had been running free/reduced airfare that applied to everyone in the reservation until just a little bit ago. That is actually what I have on my Iceland trip for 2022. With how their revenue has been affected who knows if we will ever see that promo again.

There is another thread that discussed NCL’s airfare, but I can’t find it at the moment. Some general good to know is if you want to fly in early/stay extra you have to pay for a deviation, and can only deviate 2 days on each end. If you don’t like the flights you really have no say in it and can’t change it. For an international flight the terms and conditions say that they can book you on a flight with up to 2 connections.

We really have no idea what will happen with flight pricing/airlines going out of business when things truly reopen. It may end up being worth the price or may be more hassle than it is worth for you.

To learn more about cruise air and deviation please read thru this thread.  The thread may be a few years old but the information is still valid. Purchasing air travel thru the cruiseline as a package is not bad, there's just a few things you need to know that could be important.

smplybcause

I would ignore the thread above. Most of the information is old, but more importantly NCL's promo air is very different from regularly purchasing air through the cruise line.

With the promo the only choice you have is the day you fly. You can't chose the airline or the time. NCL tries to keep it to 2 connections for international flights but that's not guaranteed. If you don't want to arrive the day the cruise leaves or leave the day the cruise ends you have to pay for a deviation, but that's only up to 2 days before or 2 days after. You won't find out your flights until about 45 days before the cruise and you're stuck with whatever they give you. And there's no guarantee to get you to the ship if the flights are late so I would highly recommend flying in earlier or at least purchasing travel insurance that would cover that.

The cost quoted for the air will not change as long as you don't change your reservation at all. Any changes will be a reprice which will change based on the promos. ie If the price drops but they're not offering the free air promo the only way to get the price drop is to give up the free air. Also you likely won't be able to get free upgrades or obc that NCL sometimes offers after final payment because unless they're running the free air promo on your cruise at the time the reprice would include the full cost of both your flights - meaning more money.

The promo can be a good deal if you know aprox what the flights will cost. However, if you're a control freak it's probably not worth the savings, but if you can live with taking whatever NCL gives you and not finding out until around 45 days before the cruise whether you're leaving at 8AM, 2PM, or 10PM then it might work out great.

Like

We are also looking at that cruise but have decided against booking the airfare with NCL for exactly the reasons stated above. We want to stay a few days before and after so it won’t work for us.  I had a cruise booked in January that included air for 2 and we had to pay $33.47 US each to fly in the day before. Which at the time was well worth it for us.

Thanks for the info. Did not think about possibility airline going under. Something to ask my cruise consultant

Purchasing air travel thru the cruiseline as a package is not bad, there's just a few things you need to know that could be important.

Did read and gives some good insight. Thanks

How we are saving almost 50% on airfare for our cruise to Alaska

Summer Hull

If the last few years have taught or reinforced any lessons, it is to always, always take the trip when the option presents itself. That includes those big, intimidating, once-in-a-lifetime adventures that can feel scary to put into motion.

With that in mind, we recently booked a big, expensive, two-cabin cruise to Alaska for the summer of 2023. The trip will include not only my kids, who will somehow already be 13 and 8 next summer, but also my parents. This includes my dad, who at 74 years young by next summer has never sailed — and likely won't other than on this one, big trip.

To sail from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Alaska (and back), you obviously have to first get to Vancouver. And with weeklong cruises to Alaska already pretty pricey, the prospect of also needing five round-trip summertime airfare tickets is ... painful.

Since there are only so many ways to save on the Alaska Disney cruise itself (and we are using every tip in the book), I'm also leaning into using every trick to save on airfare that I can muster.

After going through the gamut of various ways to save on airfare, I've landed on what may be the best way to book airfare when cruising to Alaska: the Alaska Airlines companion certificate .

Flying to Seattle vs. Vancouver

Some cruise lines sail to Alaska from Seattle, while others depart from Vancouver.

Examples of some cruise lines that depart from Vancouver include Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Silversea, Holland America and our chosen line, Disney. Because of complex laws and regulations , cruises that sail from Seattle still have to make a stop in Canada, but that's a tale for a different story.

If you choose to book an Alaska cruise on a line that departs from Vancouver, it may still be in your best interest to fly to Seattle.

Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas Alaska

Even ignoring the different levels of paperwork and regulations required to fly internationally into Canada versus staying within the U.S., the price of tickets alone may quickly drive you to look back south of the border.

Using our summer 2023 sailing dates as an example, tickets from Houston to Vancouver start at $600 to $700 round-trip per person — and all but the priciest options require a connection.

However, nonstop airfare prices to Seattle for the very same dates range from $300 to $450 round-trip per person. Obviously, prices vary by date and originating city, but outside of unique sales or situations, I'd expect the pattern of Vancouver costing more than Seattle to largely hold for departures from other U.S. cities.

You need to also factor in the cost, time and hassle of getting from Seattle to the port in Vancouver when making your decision. But quickly cutting airfare costs for five people by up to half by flying to Seattle instead of Vancouver frees up some room and tolerance for those factors.

We've done that roughly three-hour drive before to go skiing in Whistler, British Columbia , and it wasn't too bad, even with the border crossing. But, with a weeklong cruise, you do need to get creative so that you aren't paying for a rental and parking for days that you are at sea and aren't using it.

One option to get from Seattle to Vancouver includes the Amtrak Cascades train, which is scheduled to return later in 2022. For now, the route is operated by buses, but the train should return before next summer. Right now, non-discounted prices are starting at $68 each way, with 50% discounts for kids and 10% discounts for seniors.

Another option would be doing two one-way car rentals, but note that not all car rental agencies permit one-way international rentals. Budget and Avis are two rental options that, based on searches, do permit these one-way rentals.

The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

It just so happens that one of Alaska Airlines ' hubs is in Seattle. And while this will obviously vary, in our case, it has the cheapest flight option by a pretty healthy margin.

But that's just the beginning of the story.

Alaska Airlines has a buy-one-get-one companion voucher awarded at each credit card account anniversary year (and sometimes one comes as part of a card's sign-up bonus, too). It has very few use restrictions, as long as you are flying within the United States.

You get this annual certificate just by having an Alaska Airlines credit card , including the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card .

As a relevant aside, if you are in the market, the Alaska Airlines Visa Business card has welcome bonus of 50,000 bonus miles and Alaska's Famous Companion Fare; ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after you make $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

To use the Alaska Airlines companion voucher, purchase one economy fare on a domestic Alaska Airlines-operated flight with your Alaska Airlines credit card (aka not using miles) and then the second ticket will cost you just $99 plus some taxes and fees, which in this case are just under $37.

That translates to paying for one ticket to Seattle at a rate that is already a few hundred dollars less than flying into Vancouver — and getting the second ticket for $135.63, which in an era when summer airfare has been quite the bear, is a relief.

Total savings on airfare for our Alaska cruise

We currently have five people planning to go on the cruise, but I'm going to show cash airfare numbers just for four people — because we are likely using miles for the fifth as the companion certificate works best in pairs.

For four nonstop, round-trip tickets from Houston to Seattle on our preferred dates and times (using Alaska Airlines companion vouchers for two of those tickets), our cash cost is $1,145.68.

cruise with free airfare

If we instead purchased four nonstop tickets from Houston to Vancouver for our needed times and dates, it would cost $2,976.

That $1,830 in savings is a pretty big price difference in my book — and that's on top of some of the easier logistics of just flying domestically instead of internationally.

Naturally, we'll need to deduct from the savings the ultimate price of a train, bus or car to go from Seattle to Vancouver and back again, once we decide on those details as the sailing gets a bit closer. What we'll likely do as a hedge is book one-way car rentals to and from Seattle and Vancouver. Currently, prices for two one-way rentals are starting at around $400. Hopefully, with the train coming back online and the relevant child and other discounts, our ground transportation prices will get a little lower, but at least we know it shouldn't get worse than that.

Bottom line

There isn't one best way that applies in all situations, but if you are planning an Alaska cruise and Alaska Airlines operates from your home airport, using an Alaska Airlines companion certificate from a cobranded credit card to fly two people to Seattle for less is a tactic worth considering to bring down the total airfare cost.

This is especially true if your Alaska cruise departs from Seattle, but even if you depart from Vancouver, it can still be worth it to fly to Seattle in some situations. Needing a handful of tickets makes the savings even greater for us since we do have access to multiple companion vouchers.

By saving on airfare, you have more cash for other things — such as booking some of the best Alaska cruise shore excursions .
