2. Brisbane

Here are a few things you should do in Brisbane:

• Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. Located on Alice Street, the botanical gardens are like a little Oasis in the city. You can walk around and discover all the species of plants.
• City walking tour. If you only have one day in Brisbane, you should join a walking tour. This will allow you to see more sights in less time. Also, you will learn plenty about the history of Brisbane. HOW TO GET THERE: There are 2 ways you can get from Gold Coast to Brisbane:

• By car. It’s only 1 hour drive. The drive is very easy but you may be stuck in traffic and will have to pay for carpark.
• By train. There are trains from Surfers Paradise and Varsity Lakes. They take between 25 minutes and 1h20. It’s pretty convenient as you won’t need the car during the day anyway.

3. O’Reilly’s Treetop walk

🚗  Distance: 67 km – 1h30 drive

O’Reilly is a small locality situated in the heart of the Lamington National Park. Although it could have been mentioned in the paragraph above, this attraction deserves a bit more credit!

O’Reilly is home to a famous retreat and an amazing treetop walk.

It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests and is a fun day trip from Gold Coast for families.

The course is made of 9 suspension bridges, most of them being at least 15 metres above the ground.

Walking through the canopy is a magical experience for both adults and children.

HOW TO GET THERE: If you have a vehicle, you can easily drive there. It takes about 1h30. Alternatively, you can opt for a day tour that includes both O’Reilly Treetop walk and a visit of Lamington National Park.

The Gold Coast is located 1 hour south of the Queensland capital, Brisbane. This is where we have an extremely high tourist hub and more than 10 million tourists visit each year. But, sometimes you just want to escape the city and why I have this post today on the best day trips from the Gold Coast.

I’ve been a local to South East Queensland for more than 20 years and spent many weekends and holidays exploring this area. It contains lots of hiking, adrenaline, water sports, finding waterfalls, or swimming.

So, please read on to explore these options and start planning today!

What are the Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast?

I have a huge selection of activities below, together with a specially curated Map to help get you out of your hotel room for the entire day. Whether it’s for a few hours, or several items, I’m sure there is a few things that resonate with you.

1. Lamington National Park

The Lamington National Park was UNESCO World Heritage listed for part of the Gondwana Rainforest in 1994 and is where you’ll find O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. After your scenic drive, you have several different hikes on offer and a popular retreat to visit for a day trip.

The free Tree Top walk (Booyong) is a big favourite, and only 800 metres return along the suspended bridge. It consists of nine suspension bridges around 16 metres above the ground.

2. South Stradbroke Island

Can you believe that South Stradbroke Island is just a short distance from the city life? There are no cars, but it is accessed by water transportation like Boats, riding a Jet Ski, and kayaks. You also will find some nice clear waters, areas to yourself, and beautiful white sandy shores.

You can snorkel here too, but with a lacking of coral around, the underwater creatures can be very random. One popular stop would be visiting the Couran Cove Island Resort, which is located on the west side.

3. Moreton Island & Tangalooma

There is a Ferry to Moreton Island leaving from either Pinkenba or from the Brisbane Port. Day trip tours can differ from snorkeling and exploring the wrecks, or spending the day at the Tangalooma Island Resort .

This is your chance for an beachfront escape on the worlds third largest sand island . Along with so much to do, from Snorkelling or diving the wrecks, swimming on the beach/pools, the nightly Wild Dolphin feeding or parasailing. Additionally, on land, you can enjoy the sand dunes, four-wheel driving, or having some cocktails at the bar. 

4. Whale Watching

Check out this seasonal activity around May to November, with the Annual Humpback Whale migration. Each year, some 1,200 humpbacks make an epic 5,000 km journey between Antarctica and Australia and then back again.

Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to venture out on the water and experience this marvel first hand. Enjoy a tour on a comfortable catamaran out on the open water. Ultimately, watching the Humpback whales breach the surface and hopefully put on a show.

5. Theme Parks

All the different Theme Parks are what draw thousands of families and holidaymakers to the region. You have so many Parks to choose from, with their own draw cards and unique attractions and each park will need a whole day to visit. This comes down to water slides, rollercoasters, thrill rides, animals, and plenty of other entertainment.

6. Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island is one of your first points to access the The Great Barrier Reef, one of the wonders of the world. And, access to this area, comes from flights that leave Coolangatta. The trip can be expensive, but you can take advantage of the opportunity if you’re not travelling further north on your own.

A day spent at Lady Elliott Island happens to be one of best snorkelling sites , a and chance to swim with turtles, and other marine life. On land, you can explore and learn about the history of the Island, The Lighthouse, and Bird Habitat.

7. Jet Boat or Jet Ski Rides

Get your adrenalin pumping and fire up your speed zone on several local waterways. You can either ride your own Jet Ski on a tour with one or two people or join a bigger group and perform 360’s in a Jetboat. Either way, you going to have the ride of your life and put a big smile on your face.

There are several different company’s you can choose from, and some will even have deals to do both activities. These are located anywhere from Main Beach, Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach, and will sometimes include hotel pickups.

8. North Stradbroke Island

The Island of North Stradbroke (or Minjerribah) is a little different from Moreton Island, where you have over 2000 people permanently living there. Therefore, you have plenty of options to get around, beaches to explore, places to eat and drink, public transport, and accommodation.

If you only have the day to explore , then you could start with the following. Hanging out on the beach, surfing, or completing the  Gorge Walk at Point Lookout  would all be a great start.

9. Natural Bridge

Marvel at Natural Bridge, located in the Springbrook National Park and about 1 hour inland from Surfers Paradise. This is a different kind of waterfall where you can watch from above, with the water disappearing into a big hole. Along with underneath, where the waterfall crashes into the waterhole.

Ultimately, rain is always a factor with any waterfall, but this one seems to be running all year round. You can take an easy one-kilometre walking path with a slight elevation and some stairs, but easy for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. And, if you visit at night, there is a chance to see the amazing glow worms hidden among the moss-covered rock walls.

10. Purling Brook Falls

The complete Purling Brook Falls hike is about 4 kilometres in length and will take about 2 hours to complete. The track is formed, but there is a steep elevation to get back to the car park. There is a lookout at the top to see the waterfall, but a better view below from the gully.

It’s a loop track, with the waterhole about halfway. However, the waterfall is more prominent in the summer months after the rain. It’s a beautiful walk passing through the eucalypt forest in the Springbrook Plateau and crossing over a suspension bridge.

11. Southbank, Brisbane

Enjoy this trip to Brisbane and go North for a popular entertainment district. The Suburb of South Bank is located straight across the river from Brisbane City and is visited by millions of tourists each year.

You’ll find the Arts district with Museum, the library and stage theatre. Markets are held every weekend, along with special events and festivals. A variety of food and drink options with many cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, catering for those inner-city beachgoers with the man-made, patrolled Street’s Beach.

12. Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine National Park is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and the perfect spot to include in a short road trip from the city. If you’re seeking a green change and a place to admire the Mountains, then immerse yourself in the local food and arts.

Go chasing waterfalls like Cedar Creek or Curtis Falls, soar above the sky in a Hot Air Balloon, or try some delectable wines. Additionally, there is the Tree Top challenge experience, or strolling along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

13. Mount Warning

Mt Warning is located across the border in New South Wales and 1.5 hours from Surfers Paradise. It’s another activity for those Hiking fans and very challenging to those that aren’t used to elevated walks or lots of stairs.

It’s almost 9 kilometres return and requires a good level of fitness to get up. The track is nicely formed, heaps of stairs, and you might need to stop a few times to catch your breath. Once at the top, the views are amazing and well worth the effort you just put in to get there.

14. Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant

Take the night off and be entertained at the Dracula’s Cabaret restaurant in Broadbeach. As soon as you arrive, the staff are in character and expect the night full of laugh’s, skits and a singing performance. Your fed a three course dinner with a nightly vampire theme and waited on for drinks the entire night.

15. Scuba Diving or Snorkelling

Snorkelling or diving is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the Queensland coast – Being Underwater. Obviously, snorkelling is a little more accessible and done anywhere, but the closest I have come to any snorkelling was South Stradbroke Island, which was part of a Kayaking trip from Southport.

Apart from that, If you do have the opportunity to dive, then you are going to come across much more marine life. Learning to dive really changed my life and can open up a whole new world.

16. Indoor Sky Diving

Sky diving might be something on your bucket list , but the thought of jumping out of a plane is a little daunting. This is why the IFLY Skydiving centre might be more up your alley! You can experience the effects of Sky Diving in a safe, controlled environment.

17. Aqua Duck or QuackADuck Ride

The Aqua duck rides are generally completed in about a hour and leaves close by Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise. As a first-timer, you’re taken on a short land tour, before splashing into the waterways.

You see, the Aqua Duck is an amphibious vehicle and can drive on both land and Water. You will only find a few of these around Australia and one similar in Agnes Water / 1770 called the Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo / or LARC. Therefore, you very lucky to have a popular, “suits-everyone” boat ride available to you here. 

18. Girraween National Park

If you like hiking, then the Girraween National Parks walking trails will be well worth it. There are two different hiking trails that I would recommend, and best to start them both in the mornings. Don’t forget to take enough supplies for the day including, a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes.

The Pyramid Track is shorter of the two, extremely elevated, and if you can make it to the top, you will see some amazing views and the famous Balancing rock. Alternatively, the Sphinx and Turtle rock hike has elevated sections, but a lot easier for those that can’t do the Pyramid Track. Listen out for a mass amount of cicadas!

19. Skypoint Climb & Observation Deck

There are two different experiences here and available right in the heart of Surfers Paradise. The Q1 Building is the eleventh highest building in the world(as of 2021). On level 77, you have an observation deck available to everyone, with 360-degree views behind thick glass.

Here you can see the entire city skyline including, the inland waterways and hinterland. This is a popular, must-do, bucket list item and easily accessible from anywhere along the coast.

The morning will have you witnessing the setup, blowing the balloon up, enjoying the ride, and finally, packing everything up. This all takes time, but it’s interesting to learn how it all comes together.

Unless your purchase a tour with included transport, you’re probably going to need your own vehicle, or at least hire one. This means most Hot Air balloons leave from open grassy areas and are well away from the big city’s.

22. Surfing

Have you ever wanted to learn to surf or want to find the best places to go surfing for the day? Then look no further and you have so many different beaches stretching over 50 kilometres down the city skyline. Obviously, the waves are dependent on the daily tides and wind, but you will find the locals are always out there somewhere, giving it a go.

As a suggestion, you can find some of the best surfing spots at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Currumbin Alley, Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Point & Duranbah Beach. These are obviously not your only options and depend on how big you want the waves.

23. Paddle Boarding

Suppose you’re looking for a new and exciting way to enjoy the sunny beaches. In that case, paddle boarding is definitely worth a try. It is a fantastic full-body workout, and paddle boarding offers breathtaking ocean views as you glide through the water.

You’re definitely going to have fun at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary . I found this to be a very good park for animal interactions and fewer cages restricting the animals. If you looking at seeing a lot of Australian animals, then this is a great place to start. Plenty of Kangaroos , Emu’s, Birds, Snakes, and so much more.

Additionally, the Lorikeet Bird Feeding happens at 8am and 4pm every day, outside the park. They are wild birds and come down from the local bushland to feed, which is free to watch, or a gold coin donation to help feed.

25. River Cruises & Sunset River Cruises

Are you looking for a unique and relaxing way to experience the beauty of this tourist hub? Whether you choose a leisurely daytime cruise or a romantic sunset cruise, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city waterways, canals, and Broadwater.

All while it winds through lush greenery and picturesque cityscapes. Depending on the cruise you choose, you could enjoy delicious local cuisine and listen to informative commentary about the history and wildlife of the area.

26. Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a city on it’s own, with it’s beaches, local arts and crafts, diving at Julian Rocks and a backpacker haven. This is where you will be crossing the border and heading down the M1 highway to this well-known hippy town.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse happens to be the most Eastern Point in Australia. So, If you’re keen, there is a nice beachside, elevated hike up the mountain to visit. It’s also full of Unique shopping and dining experiences, and popular staged music festivals.

27. Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is located on the Northern side of South East Queensland and about 2 hours away from the Goldy. Although this is a little further than anything mentioned today, it’s still enough time for a day trip. The Sunshine Coast is very similar to the Goldy , but there is less people and less skyscrapers.

This means you have your inner city attractions, amazing beaches, and Rock pools swimming at Noosa. However you also have your rainforests with waterfall swimming at Kondalilla Falls or Gardners Falls and brilliant hiking views at Mount Ngungun.

Deciding where to stay can be daunting, with choices ranging from backpacker hostels to five-star luxury resorts. It’s important to consider what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend.

The Gold coast is worth visiting for the beaches and non-stop action, UNESCO World Heritage areas, National Parks and sunset cocktails. Whether you’re into surfing or browsing the shopping, nightlife or nature walks, this tourist hub has something for your whole group and should definitely be at the top of your list for a visit.

Best Time to visit

This is a gorgeous destination at any time of year. But the best time to visit truly depends on your interests. Summertime is the obvious choice if you love water activities like surfing and snorkelling. However, the hotter temperatures make it easier to lounge on the beach all day with a good book.

On the other hand, winter brings cooler temperatures and less crowded beaches – perfect for a peaceful getaway. It’s also the prime time to explore the hinterland, with hiking trails brimming with wildflowers and spectacular waterfalls.

How Many Days do you need?

When it comes to visiting, it’s hard to figure out just how many days you need. 3 days might seem like enough for a brief trip, but you’ll definitely miss out on some of the best attractions and hidden gems.

On the other hand, 5 days i s a reasonable amount of time for your first visit, allowing you to hit up all the main spots while still having some flexibility in your schedule.

And suppose you have the luxury of 7 or more days . In that case, that’s enough time for the ultimate experience!

Leaving from Main Beach on a purpose-built 24-metre catamaran, this tour runs for 2.5 hours.

If you are really fortunate, you’ll spot Migaloo, the much-loved white whale of the southern ocean whale migration. Migaloo is a humpback whale who frequents these waters and often puts on quite a show for whale watchers.

I treated myself to a milestone Birthday present and am glad I did. There were only eight of us in the pool that day and the dolphins happily swam around us until it was time to pose for the camera.

There are so many day trips from the Gold Coast and with so many options. Many of these are great for any type of traveller but as always we love to include options for those with kids as well.

Once you have visited the area and ticked of the main things to do in the Gold Coast, consider taking a day trip to one of these amazing destinations.

Here we have come up with the best day trips from Gold Coast for families and beyond.

Of course, the travel time to each destination will depend on where you stay on the Gold Coast however most of these day trips are close by or within a few hours to make it easy.

1. Brisbane – Best City Day Trip from the Gold Coast

If you are looking for a day trip from the Gold Coast into the city, Brisbane is under an hour away and well worth a visit.

Brisbane is a vibrant city set on the banks of the Brisbane River. There are lots of shopping opportunities and some great places to eat. The Botanical Gardens are great to explore if you want to have a stroll. The Brisbane Eye and Old Town Clock Tower are great if you are looking for panoramic city views. There are also lots of events going on throughout the year too.

2. Tamborine Mountain

Looking for an adventure? Tamborine Mountain is one of the most popular day trips from the Gold Coast for those who want to get into the nature. Just 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise you can escape to the mountains.

There are lots of walking and hiking tracks, you can go chasing waterfalls and even explore the treetops. It makes a great day trip from the Gold Coast for all ages and is excellent all year round.

3. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the best day trips from the Gold Coast, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the  most popular attractions if you are visiting the Gold Coast with kids.

You can get up close to a range of Australian animals, feed some kangaroos and even cuddle up to a koala. It is about half hour from Surfers Paradise and the same from Coolangatta.

4. North Stradbroke Island

The locals call it “Straddie” and this island paradise is just a 25 minute ferry ride away from Cleaveland. You will find beautiful beaches, plenty of dining options and accommodation. You may even get to do some whale watching depending on the time of the year.

Although it is a great day trip from the Gold Coast, it is definitely a place where you could spend a night or two.

5. South Stradbroke Island

So it may not be as famous as the north, but South Stradbroke Island is actually one of the most easiest day trips from the Gold Coast.

This 1800 hectare conservation park is the perfect place to chill and relax in the nature. There are no cars, so no traffic, and it is still kept a big enough secret that there aren’t generally crouds.

Day trippers will love the water activities from windsurfing, jetskiing, kayaking and more. There are also plenty of walking trails to explore.

You will have to get there by ferry and takes a couple of hours but it is well worth it.

6. Lamington National Park

Any post on day trips from the Gold Coast wouldn’t be complete without the addition of Lamington National Park just an hour’s drive away.

Known for its section of ancient Gondwana rainforests, it features 160km of walking tracks and numerous breathtaking waterfalls. There are plenty of lookouts if you aren’t up for a long hike, and of course the tree top walk too. It really is a nature lovers dream.

7. Scenic Rim

Another must to day trip from the Gold Coast is the Scenic Rim, named one of the world’s top travel destinations for 2022. If you love nature and food this one is for you.

Weave through the country roads of the sub tropical bushland, and discover six beautiful national parks. You can stop at the regional markets selling the regions best locally grown produce, or have lunch at one of the traditional pubs.

8. Moretown Island

Further up from the Stradbroke Islands on the coast you will find Moretown Island which is famously known for it’s beautiful beaches and spectacular sand dunes it makes a great day trip from the Gold Coast.

If you love to snorkel or dive it is a great spot. There are plenty of tropical fish to spot as well as sunken ship ruins. You can usually watch the dolphins too.

9. Byron Bay

If you are looking for somewhere with a relaxed vibe, Byron Bay makes a great day trip from the Gold Coast.

The main attraction is the walk up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse where you are rewarded with the most stunning views of the bay. Right next to the Lighthouse there is a path that takes you to the most easterly point of Australia.

The beaches are beautiful, whether you are up for a swim, surf, or just to lay on the sand. Food options are plentiful, and there are lots of organic eateries.

Byron Bay is just 40 minutes from Coolangatta and about an hour and a half from Surfers Paradise you will feel the difference from the moment you arrive in this chilled, free spirited seaside town.

Not the shortest day trip from the Gold Coast but definitely worth a visit.  You will find lots of natural beauty including beautiful beaches and the nature conservation of the Noosa national park.

If you love to surf, head to Noosa heads which is a great surfing spot. Lots of delicious places to eat serving up fresh seafood daily. If you can stay for sunset it is just magical.

The tranquil town of noosa on the Sunshine Coast is around 2-2.5 hours away depending on where you are staying. If you leave early it is a beautiful drive.

If you’re looking to explore other parts of stunning South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, the Gold Coast is the perfect home base. Within an hour’s drive, there’s such a diverse choice of destinations to visit, from a buzzing capital city, to quaint coastal villages and a bohemian country town. With world-class art and architecture, exceptional eats, picturesque settings plus waterfalls, creeks and seaside adventures, there’s a lot of ground to cover.

Pack the car and pick a good play list. Here are four fabulous day trip options that will fill your adventure cup right up and have you back to the Gold Coast by nightfall.

First cab off the rank is Brisbane, approximately a 120km round trip from Coomera in northern Gold Coast to the heart of the city. In a relatively small area, there are an absolute myriad of things to see, do and (perhaps most importantly) eat. Kick off the day in South Bank where culture vultures will be right at home. Here’s a few must see spots to pop into.

QPAC: One of Australia’s leading destinations for live performances, QPAC hosts world-renowned shows year-round. On any given day you’ll be treated anything from an award-winning Broadway musical to the wild ways of a cabaret slash burlesque experience. Make sure to check the schedule before you go. Where: Cnr Grey and, Melbourne St, South Brisbane

GOMA: The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art is undoubtedly one of Brisbane’s most loved attractions because who doesn’t love wandering amongst some of the most revered art in the world. There are interchanging exhibitions to peruse, hands on workshops and activities for the kids and both casual and fine dining eating options. Where: Stanley Pl, South Brisbane

Museum of Brisbane : Bringing culture to life, Museum of Brisbane is a firm favourite for young and old with plenty of enjoyable learning opportunities on offer for everyone. The Museum’s collection is made up of artworks and objects that reflect the stories and people of Brisbane and there’s always something new to uncover. Where: City Hall, 64 Adelaide St, Brisbane City Howard Smith Wharves: If you’re keen to move onto another part of the city for lunch or afternoon beverages, Howard Smith Wharves is where you want to be. Nestled underneath the spectacular Story Bridge in Fortitude Valley you’ll have a multitude of bars and eateries to choose from.

Felons Brewing Co. offers a huge range of beers brewed onsite and best enjoyed on a bar stool overlooking the river. GRECA is the Greek dining experience of your dreams – hot tip; do not go past the Saganaki with honey and oregano. Mr Percival’s is one of the prettiest venues you’ve ever seen, serving up burgers, wood-fired pizzas and snacks with a side of epic cocktails. Stanley Restaurant offers out-of-the-box Cantonese flavours showcasing some of the best seafood, meat, vegetables and fruit in the world and Yoko Dining is a lively Japanese dining experience including incredible seafood, snacks and of course, cocktails.

While you’re in the neighbourhood treat yourself to a Story Bridge Climb . You’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of Brisbane and its surrounds. From the Glass House Mountains to Moreton Bay and south to the Scenic Rim. It’s an absolutely magical experience that both kids and adults will love. Where: 5 Boundary St, Brisbane City

It’s not hard to see why Queensland’s Scenic Rim was named by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten regions in the world. From incredible vistas to flower farms (!) and some exceptional eateries, all you need to do is jump in the car and take yourself on a 240km round trip from Broadbeach . Here’s a few things to see while you’re there.

Scenic Rim Brewery: If you’re a fan of family-owned establishments in the most beautiful little country towns that celebrate the people and places they love (and honestly who isn’t), a trip to Scenic Rim Brewery is a must. You’ll sip brews like Digga’s Pale Ale, Shazza’s Mid Strength and if you’re after something a little different Ginger Extra Dry’s Ginger Beer is the goods. There’s also a café stacked with European-inspired eats. Where: 898 Reckumpilla St, Mount Alford

Summer Land Camel Farm : Australia’s largest wild camel training centre and dairy operation is a delightful experience where you’ll meet and feed the locals, learn about the health benefits of camel and even watch the products being made right there on the farm. Sit down to sample their tasty cheeses, gelato and cakes and try some anti-aging skin care products too. Where: 8 Charles Chauvel Drive, Harrisville

Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm : Consisting of a cellar door, restaurant and lavender shop which overlooks a six-hectare vineyard and a breathtaking lavender fields, with magnificent views of the Scenic Rim mountains, you won’t to miss this beauty. The award-winning restaurant offers a menu filled with modern Australia cuisine, made with locally sourced produce. Where: 168 FM. Bells Road, Mount Alford

Sunflower Festival: If you’re planning a trip in March, add the Sunflower Festival to your list. It goes without saying that being immersed in the magic of millions of sunflowers (16 acres to be exact) in one of the most beautiful places in the world is a once in a lifetime experience but throw in entertainment, rides, merchandise and of course, plenty to eat and drink. Where: 56 Warumkarie Road, Kalbar

MURWILLUMBAH

Nestled in the Northern NSW mountains is the loveliest of country towns, Murwillumbah. It’s a 60km round trip from Currumbin and we highly recommend you take the scenic route through the magical Currumbin Valley and up over Tomewin Mountain. Think winding roads with little veggie stalls dotted throughout, cane fields and crisp country air. Check out these beauties.

Keith: Obviously coffee, craft beer and natural wines are a priority on any day trip and the (very) popular Keith has all three. He’s a café slash restaurant in case you were wondering, and he also serves up delicious baked goodies including some of the very nest doughnuts around. Where: 132 Murwillumbah St, Murwillumbah

Knox & Co: If perusing beautiful little boutiques is a thing you love to do while day tripping (same), the very best place you can do so is Knox & Co. With all the latest books, art, fashion, candles, beauty products and homewares, you will absolutely not walk away empty handed. Where: 3-5 Brisbane St, Murwillumbah

Imperial Hotel: You certainly won’t miss the pretty pink façade of Murwillumbah’s famous Imperial Hotel . Built in 1931, it’s got that delightful country charm of the Victorian era and has recently been refurbished ensuring it’s a must-visit. Pop in for lunch or a frosty beverage and experience one of the most unique spots in the region. Where: 115 Murwillumbah Street, Murwillumbah

Op Shops: For fan of thrifting, there are some absolute gems in Murwillumbah filled with unique bits and pieces you’d never find in the city. Where: Salvos Store – 102-106 Main St, Vinnies – 138 Murwillumbah St and Salvation Army – 162 Murwillumbah St

Tweed Regional Gallery: On the outskirts of the town centre, set amongst the vast green valley you’ll find the Tweed Regional Gallery . With seven exhibition spaces, including contemporary touring shows, the gallery showcases the work of local, national and international artists. The onsite café serves coffee, tasty eats and breathtaking views and the gallery shop stocks gifts and handcrafted goodies by local designers. Mavis Kitchen: A little further on you’ll find one of the most stunning spots in northern NSW, Mavis’s Kitchen – a destination restaurant tucked into the rainforest that offers one of the absolute best dining experiences you’ll ever have. The country-style restaurant serves food grown organically, sourced locally, harvested seasonally and prepared with love. Dine in for an a la carte lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and absolutely choose the paired wine option. Where: 64 Mount Warning Rd, Uki

KINGSCLIFF & CABARITA

Jump in the car for a tiny 40km round trip to Cabarita (from Coolangatta) and delight in one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Australia. On the way home, stop into Kingscliff and you’ll have spent in day in full relaxation mode, having taken in some stunning sights and some stunning eats (and drinks of course). Here’s what to see while you’re there.

Tropical Fruit World: Just north of Kingscliff is Tropical Fruit World , one of the most colourful spots around the Coast. As the name suggests it is a world of fruit – a huge plantation established amongst the rainforest in 1983. The working farm sits within the perfect environment to grow over 500 fruits from across the world and you can (and should) book a ride on the tractor train that tours the property. Then settle in at Plantation House, the onsite dining venue and sample some goodies made with exotic fruit from the orchard. Where: 29 Duranbah Road, Duranbah

Husk Distillers: Set amongst the lush green surrounds of Tumbulgum, Husk Distillers is a beautiful spot to pull up a picnic blanket and sample some locally made rum or gin. Their multi-award-winning rum is unlike anything you’ve sampled before and you’ve no doubt sampled Ink Gin, the petty purple sip that took Australia by storm. Book a tour, treat yourself to a tasting and enjoy some incredible tasting plates to round out a top-notch experience. Where: 1152 Dulguigan Road, North Tumbulgum

Tweed Eco Tours: Seeing the region via our world-class waterways is an excellent option and doing so with Tweed Eco Tours , a team dedicated to preserving those waterways, is the way to go. Beautiful beaches: It goes without saying that there are infinite beautiful beaches to dip your toes into along the way. Both Cabarita and Kingscliff have flagged beaches if you’re keen to pull up a piece of sand for a few hours. Cudgen Creek at the north end of the beach in Kingscliff is a lovely, calm spot for little kids and those who prefer to float about, and you should also stop in at Hastings Point for a paddle too. The possibilities are endless.

Everyone has heard of the famous Surfers Paradise Beach and everyone loves to holiday on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. If you love sunshine, miles and miles of squeaky white sand surf beaches, an amazing range of cafes, bars, and nightclubs, great shopping, and exciting theme parks, you’ll love the Gold Coast.

But wait! That’s not all!

Within an hour or twos drive from the Gold Coast is a whole set of totally different experiences that are not to be missed. We asked the local travel experts and travel bloggers for their tips on must-see places on a day trip from the Gold Coast. Here are their recommendations.

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND

North Stradbroke Island is easily accessible from the Gold Coast and surrounds and makes for a great day trip.

There is no bridge access to North Stradbroke Island, so all transport to and from the island is either by vehicle or passenger ferries.  It’s less than an hour drive from the northern Gold Coast to Cleveland, the departure point for the ferries.  On arrival at Dunwich on the island, the sealed roads are suitable for the family car.

The island offers something for just about everyone.

There are three townships on the island – Dunwich, Amity Point, and Point Lookout.

When you arrive at Dunwich, stop for a while and enjoy these great attractions.

Quandamooka Aboriginal Art Gallery  – holds art works created by the traditional owners of the island.

Staddie Island Bakery  – try a coffee and homemade pie while taking in the vista of southern Moreton Bay.

Little Ship Club  – looking for a great lunch in a beautiful open-air setting?  Then try The Black Pearl Steak and Seafood Restaurant.

Then head over to Point Lookout, which is the jewel in the crown of the island.

Cylinder Beach  – this is a fully weather protected beach and is great for all the family.  Blue water, small waves most of the time, and pure white sand.  Don’t forget to grab a coffee at the beachside coffee shack.

Gorge Walk  – this boardwalk takes you along the entire headland with panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean. Spot Green Turtles in the North Gorge, see dolphins and migrating whales swimming by.

Dining Experiences  – here you’re spoilt for choice!  Blue Room Café, Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel, Whale’s Way Restaurant to name a few.

On your return to Dunwich, swing by Amity Point to sample these.

Seashells at Amity Café  – this licensed venue is worth a visit, not only for the menu but the amazing décor. 

Flinders Beach  – if you’re into 4WD experiences, then try the drive along this pristine beach.

Amazing Sunsets  – there are not many places along the east coast of Australia where the sun sets over the water.  If you’re there later in the day, Amity Point is one of those rare places.

If you’ve got some time to spare, then drive over to Lake Bumiera for a refreshing dip in this magnificent sheltered freshwater lake before heading back to the mainland.

North Stradbroke Island is a ‘must-do’ when it comes to the best day trips from the Gold Coast.

If you’re looking for a great day trip from the Gold Coast, why not head to one of its famous theme parks?  While there are various parks to choose from,  Dreamworld  is a great park for all ages, as well as having a bit of everything including great shows, rides, animals, and a water park.

To make the most of your day, aim to arrive around 15 minutes prior to opening time and buy your tickets in advance to save both time and money.  Once you get inside the park, check the times of the various shows you’d like to see and plan your day around this.  I highly recommend that you don’t miss the tiger show at Tiger Island and even the sheep shearing show is well worth it too.

If you’re visiting with young children, no doubt you’ll spend a bit of time at ABC Kids World and Wiggles World where there are some great kiddy shows.  There is also a great Madagascar show for the kids in the DreamWorks Experience zone.

For those that love the thrill-seeking ride – you’re in for a real treat!  There are some amazing adrenaline-pumping rides at Dreamworld.  Some of the best include the Tower of Terror (my absolute favorite!), the Giant Drop and the Buzz Saw.

I’d also recommend you leave time to explore the Corroboree zone where you can have some close encounters with a range of native animal wildlife as well as learn about Australian indigenous culture.

Dreamworld is located around a 25-minute drive from the heart of Surfers Paradise and is best reached by car.  However, if you don’t have a car, there are a range of buses which provide private transfers and it is also possible to take public transport too.

MOUNT WARNING          

Be the first people in Australia to watch the sunrise from the top of Mount Warning or take a day hike to the summit.

Paulette Reid, a Gold Coast local and passionate traveler, recommends Mount Warning as a must-do day trip.

Mount Warning is a very distinctive mountain that can be seen for miles around the New South Wales and Queensland borders. It is about an hours drive from the Gold Coast and is a popular spot for watching the sunrise. It is about a two to three hour walk to the summit for people with a reasonable level of fitness. The super fit say it can be done in an hour! 

If viewing the sunrise from the summit is your goal, you need to be well prepared with your departure timing, head torches, food and drink, and suitable layers of clothing

Mount Warning is also a great day hike. Take the road through Tumbulgum (great for a stroll around and a coffee stop) out past Murwillumbah through Uki and stroll around the village there too if you have time. At 64 Mount Warning Road in Uki is the popular Mavis’s Kitchen. This is a restaurant set up in an old Queenslander. Have a seat on the veranda or the garden and enjoy organically grown food, much of which is sourced from their own garden.

Keep an eye out for the Mount Warning signs.  About ten minutes past Uki you will turn right at the turn off to Mount Warning and clatter your way across the old bridge. A further five minutes will bring you to the car park. There is a toilet block here.

The first part of the hike involves about 100 gruelling steps. The trail is like a switchback and is a shady hike through the World Heritage listed rainforest. There is a viewing platform half way up. Take it at your own pace. The final part of the hike is by chain on a rock face!

The magnificent views from the summit are well worth the walk. They stretch out to Byron Bay and right down the coast. Take it easy on the hike back down the mountain. It’s hard on the knees and some say hiking poles are a good aid, especially coming back down. The best time to do the hike is probably during the Gold Coast winter- May to September- when the weather is cooler and the skies clearer without the summer heat haze. Allow five to six hours for the return trip.

It’s definitely a must do day trip from the Gold Coast.

SOUTH STRADBROKE ISLAND     

An island full of interesting trails, local wildlife, great beaches and a popular café and bar with the boaties and locals called Tipplers.

Amy and her husband are world cruisers and travel bloggers. They set sail from France in 2014 and have been sailing and traveling ever since. One of the highlights of their time in Australia was at Stradbroke Island.

South Stradbroke Island is just a short boat trip away from Gold Coast and Brisbane.  This 1800-hectare park is full of trails and local wildlife, plus scenic beach views. Getting there is easy if you have access to a boat, otherwise, take the ferry or water taxi.  The ferry is available out of Mariner’s Cove at Main Beach and takes less than an hour, with a cost of $38 AUD.

Couran Cove is the base for the ferry, and also provides a cafe.  Once you are there, take a hike on one of the many bushwalking trails, and enjoy one of the area’s most serene and beautiful beaches.  For lunch, Tippler’s, just a 35-minute walk away from Couran Cove Resort, is a fun, casual favorite for the boating crowd.

Wallabies and kangaroos are commonly sighted on the island, and during the right season, whales can be viewed along the coast.  Though harder to spot, koalas and echidnas also live on South Stradbroke Island.

If you are looking to stay longer, the resort has high-end rooms available for an overnight stay, or you can camp at one of the few campsites around the island.

THE TWEED COAST       

Kilometres of unspoilt coastline, pristine beaches, quiet estuaries, and charming seaside villages.

Kathy Marris is a travel and lifestyle blogger, an ex Gold Coast local and now resides just over the border with New South Wales in KIngscliff. She recommends the Tweed Coast for an interesting day out. 

The Tweed Coast is a comfortable day drive from the Gold Coast just across the New South Wales/Queensland border in Australia. Here you will discover 37 kilometers of unspoiled coastline, pristine beaches, quiet estuaries, and charming seaside villages. I like it so much that I recently relocated here earlier this year!

Take the Tweed Coast Road exit off the Pacific Highway south of Tweed Heads and take your time stopping by at each and every village along the long stretch of coastline. Make sure you take advantage of the fruit and vegetable farm gate stalls along the drive.

First stop has to be my own little patch of paradise at Kingscliff. This seaside village has actually multiplied during the past few years with the addition of Salt Village and Casuarina Beach to the south. However Kingscliff still retains its charm with a compact little town centre, two caravan parks, plenty of restaurants and cafes, a great pub and pristine beaches and a creek that you can almost have to yourself during the off  peak season.

Hastings Point is the next little village that boasts another estuarine creek that is ideal for paddling a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard or throwing a line in. It’s very popular with young families due to the safe calm waters in the creek.

Further on you will come to Pottsville, one of the larger villages, with great amenities. The caravan park takes pride of place being located on Mooball Creek and Pottsville Beach, giving holidaymakers the best of both worlds.

At the end of the Tweed Coast Road is a relatively unknown village called Wooyung. If you’re looking for a quiet holiday then this would be the perfect spot to camp. It’s renowned for great surfing and fishing.

 Only a hop, step and a jump is the village of Cabarita Beach, another wonderful little holiday spot. The highlight here is the headland that juts out into the Pacific Ocean, where there are protected beaches- perfect for surfing or swimming, and whale watching during the season – June to October.paragraph.

NATURAL BRIDGE, SPRINGBROOK NATIONAL PARK     

Wild rainforest and a waterfall plunging into a cave.  At night- glow worms and bats!

Eloise Is the travel blogger of ‘My Favourite Escapes’ and one of her favourite escapes is ‘Natural Bridge, Springbrook National Park’ for a total contrast to the Gold Coast scene

The most popular short walk in Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge, is only 45 minutes away from the Gold Coast. It’s a total change of scenery. You leave the beach, the surfers and skyscrapers behind to explore a wild rainforest. It’s remote so you’ll need your own vehicle to drive there or join a tour.

The path to reach the photogenic waterfall has been made as easy as possible. There are still some steps and small climbs, so it usually takes around 40 minutes to complete the 1.5-kilometer circuit.

Although the main reason to visit is to watch the waterfall plunge in the cave, the rest of the walk is pleasant. You’ll want to stop even if you aren’t tired. It’s also a special place to visit at night as  Springbrook Natural Bridge cave is home to a colony of glow worms  and small bats.

CURRUMBIN SANCTUARY          

A park full of iconic Australian animals and birds and much more!

Sue Williams is another local Gold Coaster travel enthusiast, who has recently had family visiting from the UK, so became an expert on day trips from the coast.  She is a great enthusiast for Currumbin Sanctuary.

This is a great family day out with a park full of iconic Australian animals and birds, as well as lots of other animals. I love going with or without family. It is situated at the Southern end of the Gold Coast just off the Gold Coast Highway in Currumbin and is easy to access by the public buses. You might even see the Currumbin Sanctuary from the air just as you are coming to land, as you fly into the Gold Coast.

Compared to other theme parks on the coast, it is reasonably priced, with a standard adult price of $49.95, but if you look online you may find a bargain, especially outside of school holidays.  There are family tickets too, which offer a good saving. Prices for this ticket will differ depending on the time of the year.

There is a schedule of feeding times starting with feeding the lorikeets at 8.00 am.  They fly in on mass to be fed milk protein and honey and sit on your head and arms and it is a wonderfully colourful and very noisy display. This is a very popular free event and takes place in the morning and again in the afternoon.

There are two bird shows and these are not to be missed, as they have trained so many varieties of birds from birds of prey to pelicans and even a chicken.  They are very informative and great fun. 

A new addition is the Lost Valley rainforest precinct with exotic new arrivals. It shows you how millions of years ago there was a supercontinent of Gondwana and how it split over time. It leads you on a voyage showing different  species from the various continents before the split,

There are many other things to do throughout the rest of the park. You can have your photo taken with a Koala or a snake, feed the Kangaroos and visit the wallabies.  You can also watch a crocodile being fed, alongside alligators, birds, dingos, reptiles.

At the end of the day, there is an Aboriginal Dance Show.  There is also an open train which gives a pleasant and picturesque ride around the park.

It is really somewhere to go at all times of the year but be aware that it will be very busy in the school holidays.

Scenic rim trail

If you are ready to ditch the city for a weekend and get your legs moving, the Scenic Rim region is the perfect destination for a Gold Coast day trip. Located just an hour south of Brisbane, Scenic Rim is known for great hiking, great produce and is one of the best regions for outdoor lovers on the East Coast of Australia. The rugged landscape incorporates the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest and mountains like the Great Dividing Range, the Border Range, and Tamborine Mountains.

Most people come to explore the region on foot via the  Scenic Rim Trail . It is Queensland’s only Great Walk of Australia and covers about 50 kilometers in length. However, most locals opt to explore short sections of the trail on a Gold Coast day trip. While avid hikers set out on their 5-day trek carrying all of their equipment and provisions with them.

All that walking is sure to work up an appetite so cap your Scenic Rim day trip off with a visit to one of the region’s locally owned breweries, wineries, or restaurants. Most of which have a strong focus on seasonal, local products.

If you are planning your day trip between June and July don’t miss Scenic Rim’s Eat Local Week. This 10-day festival has everything from local artisan goods, to cooking classes, and kids activities. Foodies and sustainable travelers alike will love this popup festival.

Byron Bay is a great place to visit on a day trip from the Gold Coast because of the beautiful beaches and chilled atmosphere. Some cool things to do while in Byron Bay include visiting the Byron Bay lighthouse on the eastern most part of the Australian mainland with it’s really stunning views, explore the nine outstanding surf beaches and go surfing, and shop at the local markets. You find an abundance of vegan and organic restaurants, with a focus on quality food.

As well as amazing surf and scenic walks you could visit the Cumbebin Wetland Sanctuary and wander along the boardwalk through the wetland, or take a look around the Tea Tree Lakes with their black looking water.

Tip! Byron Bay is particularly popular among surfers and people who enjoy a laidback lifestyle. If you’re interested in learning to surf while in Byron try to book lessons with one of the surf shops a couple of days before you arrive.

Best time to visit Byron Bay:   Byron Bay is beautiful to visit at any time of the year.

How to get there:  Getting to Byron Bay from the Gold Coast is relatively easy. You can catch a shuttle, such as Byron Bay Express for $55 return or you can drive which will take roughly an hour and a half. Alternatively, you could search for an organised day tour.

A scenic town on the north coast of NSW, Yamba is fast becoming the new Byron Bay. With incredible beaches and a laid-back vibe, it will remind you of the Gold Coast before it became so busy.

If you’re a keen surfer, Angourie, which is a national surfing reserve just to the south of Yamba is the spot for you for world-famous surf breaks and pristine beaches. With one of the best right-hand point breaks in the country, surfers will find it hard to resist taking a day trip to Angourie Point.

But you don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy a day trip. Other things to do in  Yamba  include hiking in the national park, kayaking, swimming and fishing.

You can fish from the beaches, in the estuaries or standing on the rocks. A great way to experience the Yamba fishing lifestyle is to hire a boat of a fishing kayak. Don’t miss walking along the breakwall and exploring the Yamba lighthouse.

A great time of year to visit  Yamba  is during whale watching season when you can watch the humpback whales swim past on their way back down to Antarctica. Another relaxing activity in Yamba is to go on a Clarence River cruise.

Yamba is less than a three-hour drive from the Gold Coast, so start early in the morning to make the most out of your day trip.

Brisbane CITY

Brisbane “the River City” on the banks of the Brisbane River is vibrant, beautiful, and surprising. A day trip to Brisbane from the Gold Coast is sure to leave you satisfied and wanting to return as this city has more things to do and places to go than you can do in one day.

On your day trip to Brisbane, take advantage of a sunny day by visiting any of the city’s parklands and gardens. Swim at South Bank Parklands manmade Street Beach, stroll through the City Botanical Gardens exploring the variety of gardens or visit the Roma Street Parklands for a picnic lunch.

If art, culture, science, and history interest you, check out the South Bank cultural precinct- home of the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre, Art Gallery and Modern Art Gallery, Performing Art Centre and State Library. Another option is to join a free walking tour of the city’s historic sites and points of interest; one of many  free things to do in Brisbane .

Get back to nature by taking a walk along the river bank to the cliffs of Kangaroo Point, where you can challenge yourself to climb the 107 steps up the cliffside. Alternatively, take the 20-minute trip out of the city center to Mount Coot-Tha where you can walk bush trails. Kangaroo Point cliffs and Mount Coot-Tha also have lookouts with views of the city.

The Brisbane Eye and the Old Town Hall Clock Tower offer uninterrupted panoramic views. For river views take a trip on the free City Hopper ferry. 

Brisbane loves events and festivals. Our favorites are the Brisbane Festival and the Enchanted Garden. The Brisbane Festival is an art and cultural festival and the highlight is the festival’s finale – “River Fire”- a spectacular fireworks display. The Enchanted Garden is an extravagant Christmas light display in the Roma Street Parklands that is nothing less than magical.

Brisbane also caters for those of you who love to shop and dine out. Shop at the open-air Queen Street Mall. Eat and drink on the river bank at Eagle Street Pier.

Whatever you do, Brisbane is only one hour from the Gold Coast and the perfect destination for a day trip.

CURRUMBIN ROCK POOLS

Caitlin Boylan is the person behind the travel blog -‘The Country Jumper.’ If you’re feeling a bit hot and want a cool dip away from the surf she says to head to the Currumbin rock pools

The Currumbin Rock Pools are a not-so-secret freshwater swimming spot just a 20 minutes’ drive from the glimmering sea of the Gold Coast.

The drive takes you through Currumbin Valley and is worth doing in and of itself. You’re headed inland, into the mountains, and the water in Currumbin cools off accordingly. So be prepared for a refreshingly cool dip. There are plenty of rocks to jump from, and the water is deep enough in spots for that to be a safe thing to do. There are also shallower pools to paddle about and chill out in.

There’s parking along the road which is free but can fill up. There is no entrance to the pools so it’s a great free day, or half-day, out. The rock pools are a super pool spot for families, so they are quite busy during the summer holidays and weekends. If you’re looking to avoid big crowds go when the kids are in school.

BANGALOW MARKET

The Bangalow Market, considered one of the biggest & best markets in Australia, has taken place on the 4th Sunday of every month for over 30 years.

Let me tell you all about our experience of the big day out from the Gold Coast to go to  the Bangalow Market

We had heard all about the famous Bangalow Market that takes place in the rural historic village of Bangalow, on the fourth Sunday of every month with over 300 very interesting and diverse stalls, live entertainment, and great food in very picturesque grounds with huge camphor laurel and fig trees. It sounded great, so off we went along the Highway to the Byron Bay turn off, then up the main street and looked for the market. And we looked and looked!

It’s only a 45-minute drive from the Gold Coast and the date was 31st March so, without doing the math, we assumed that it was the 4th Sunday of the month! WRONG! 31st March is the 5th Sunday of the month. No market! We bumped into another couple wandering around lost who had made the same mistake that we had.

Never mind! It is a quaint historic little town with lots of good cafes and we had a great Sunday lunch! There was a huge second-hand clothing market in a big hall and we had a quick look around, but there were so many clothes it was actually a bit overwhelming. 

We  took the Byron Bay route back to the Gold Coast and had a wander along the beach.  Not quite the day we had planned but very pleasant nonetheless. We’ll have to wait now to hear from you, about your day trip to the Bangalow Market!

NOOSA- Sunshine Coast

If you are willing to go a bit further, Noosa can be a great day trip from the Gold Coast.

Noosa is located about two and a half hours away from the Gold Coast, up north. 

There are many things you can do in Noosa, especially if you like walking and water activities. 

First, you can head to Hastings Street. You will find many shops and cafes there, perfect to get breakfast. If you wish to book a surfing class, that would be the best place to do so. You can then walk towards the beach and enjoy the sunshine there. 

In the afternoon, you can visit Noosa National Park. There are a few walking trails in the park but the best one is the coastal path. It will take you from Noosa Heads to the Fairy pools. It is truly one of the  most beautiful places in Australia!  The walk is 7km long (return) and you will need a couple of hours to complete it. 

If you are a foodie and shopper, you will love Noosa. There are always a few markets on! On Sundays, Noosa Farmer Market is open. It’s a great place to grab food for a picnic! Another good option is going to Eumundi Market (on Saturdays). This one is a bit different as it’s more about local products and clothes but it’s very good fun. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the biggest markets on the coast!

Noosa is an amazing place to go if you are looking for a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful landscapes! Although it will take a bit longer to get there from the Gold Coast, it’s well worth a visit.

TAMBOURINE NATIONAL PARK

Tamborine National Park is a beautiful area located only a 45-minute drive from the Gold Coast and a must-visit on any  Australia East Coast road trip .

The park is situated on Tamborine Mountain, a 550-meters high plateau. The higher altitude means temperatures are slightly cooler than the surrounding area so it can be a great place to escape the summer heat. Also, being elevated above its surroundings, there are stunning views to be enjoyed all throughout the park.

The park is actually made up of 14 sections, each with their own activities and adventures. The most popular parts of the park are the Witches Falls, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, MacDonald Park, and Palm Grove.

At the Witches Falls, there is a lovely 3-kilometer hiking trail through the forest called the Witches Falls Circuit. Along the way, you can see all sorts of tropical plants, huge trees and hear many birds singing their songs. The waterfalls are gorgeous, though it depends on the season how much water is flowing down.

My favorite part of the park was Cedar Creek, where a beautiful cascading waterfall empties into a natural swimming pool. It’s a great spot to spend a couple of hours! Please note this is a popular place to swim and parking is limited. I’d avoid visiting during the weekend when it can get really crowded.

Another highlight of the park is the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. This 1.5 km walk through the treetops is a great family activity, kids will love walking through the canopy and parents will enjoy the views.

The Gold Coast is home to glittering beaches, high-octane theme parks and some of the glitziest bars and restaurants around. But as exciting as the Gold Coast is, there’s still more to discover just a short drive from the renowned holiday strip. 

From world heritage-listed national parks to island paradises and culinary hotspots, the Gold Coast makes for a great base camp for exploring South East Queensland. Plus, all these locations can be visited in one day so you’re back in time for a swim at RACV Royal Pines Resort .

Distance from the Gold Coast: an hour by car

Byron Bay has become an international travel destination for everyone from celebrities through to backpackers. If you want to experience the beauty and tranquillity of Byron Bay before it became famous, visit the neighbouring Brunswick Heads.

The town still has the charm of a seaside hamlet, despite being only a short drive from Byron Bay itself. A day out in Brunswick Heads letssyou explore numerous specialty stores (including vintage shops), dine at any number of cute cafes and restaurants (with vegetarian and gluten-free options available at many venues) and delight in the region’s natural beauty. 

Located at the intersection of the Brunswick River and Simpsons Creek, Brunswick Heads has plenty of beaches for swimming, surfing or just relaxing in the sun. Torakina Beach is popular for its sheltered, pristine waters while Brunswick Heads Main Beach has stronger currents making it a favourite for surfers (it is only patrolled during certain times of the year). The beach also features a dog beach at its southern end. 

Head to the town break wall for the chance to spot a dolphin or visit on the first Saturday of the month to explore the town markets. Brunswick Heads is also a favoured spot among anglers. 

Tamborine Mountain 

Distance from the Gold Coast: 50 minutes by car

Known as the green behind the gold, Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast Hinterlands is the day-trip destination for when you want to immerse yourself in nature. Think ancient green rainforest, a cooler climate, an abundance of wildlife and showstopping views - just 50 minutes down the road. 

Choose a walk or hike throughout Tamborine National Park or check out the 11 hectares of lush greenery at the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens. Adults will enjoy the selection of breweries and distilleries on the mountain while kids will be delighted by the glow worm caves and ThunderBird Park; an adventure and nature park where you can enjoy high ropes courses, ziplines, mini golf and bird feeding.

If you can stick around until sunset, Hang Glider Lookout is the prime position to salute the end of the day while taking in the sweeping views of the Scenic Rim and Great Dividing Ranges. During optimal weather conditions (dry, with winds between 8 and 32ph) you might even see hang or paragliders launching from the site!

Distance from the Gold Coast: an hour by car, 1.5 hours by train (depart Varsity Lakes Station)

Brisbane is where to go for a cultural and culinary day trip from the Gold Coast. A quick hour’s drive up the highway lands you in the thick of rooftop bars, open-air cinemas and one of Australia’s strongest restaurant scenes. 

The laidback West End is a sure bet for weekday markets, organic food cafes and live music venues for those enticed to stay a little longer. If you’re a culture vulture, don’t miss a visit to the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) or the Brisbane Powerhouse – an ex-power station turned performing arts venue. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is always a safe bet with the kids as well.

Be sure to set aside a couple of hours to wander the banks of the Brisbane River (aka the Brown Snake), exploring it using one of the CityCat ferries or popping in for a swim at the impressive man-made Streets Beach in Southbank to cool off. Or see the city from above on the Brisbane Wheel .

Lamington National Park 

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park is well worth a visit if you’re interested in nature, hiking or history. The park is of vital ecological importance as it’s home to part of Queensland’s Gondwana Rainforest, ancient rainforests that existed on the supercontinent Gondwana 250 million years ago. 

These days the park is home to a diverse range of birds, bats and reptiles, including the showy satin and regent bowerbirds, and can be easily explored by foot. There are 160km of walking tracks to explore, including some, like the Centenary Track, which are paved. There’s also the Treetop Walk which features nine suspension bridges strung 16 metres high amongst the rainforest.

Lamington National Park also has plenty to offer those who like waterfalls (there’s roughly 500 throughout the park) with the ecotourism operator O’Reilly’s offering activities within the park such as segway and e-bike tours, yoga, guided walks and tour and wildlife experiences.

North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)

Distance from the Gold Coast: 2.5 hours, including a one-hour ferry ride

Simply ‘Straddie’ to the locals, North Stradbroke Island is easily reached via a 25-minute passenger ferry ride from Cleveland (or take your vehicle on the 45-minute ferry). Take your pick between gallery hopping, whale watching or eating and drinking your way around the extensive list of cafes, restaurants and bars. 

The island is a natural playground for beach-lovers. Stick to the patrolled beaches of Main and Cylinder if you’re keen for a dip. There’s also an enclosed, unpatrolled swimming area at Amity Point (Pulan), which also features a jetty often frequented by dolphins and surrounding bushland home to koalas. 

For those staying on dry land, take the easy 1.2-kilometre track along the North Gorge Walk at Point Lookout. You’ll be treated to a spectacular outlook across a 32-kilometre stretch of white sandy beach. Or explore the island’s waters by hiring a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard. North Stradbroke Island is also a known surf destination with learn-to-surf lessons also available. 

Distance from the Gold Coast: 2.5 hours by car

You’ve experienced the Gold Coast, now experience the Sunshine Coast. Noosa is the shining jewel of the Sunshine Coast , renowned for its stunning postcard-perfect beaches and its Everglades waterways – one of only two in existence around the world. 

Spend all day at the patrolled Noosa Heads Main Beach if you wish, or set aside some time to explore the boutiques, bars and restaurants on nearby Hastings Street. Visiting on a Sunday allow you the chance to peruse the Noosa Farmers Market (featuring artisan foods and crafts) while visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday lets you see the Eumundi Markets in the Noosa Hinterlands.

The adventurous can also take on a hike in Noosa National Park – and if you’re too tired to drive back to the Gold Coast in one day, you can always book a luxurious stay at RACV Noosa Resort.

Burleigh Heads National Park is a breathtaking oasis on the Gold Coast, offering a blend of lush rainforest, rocky cliffs, and serene beaches.

The park offers two main walking trails: the Rainforest Circuit and the Oceanview Walk.

The Rainforest Circuit, a tranquil path amid towering trees and dense vegetation, offers wildlife spotting, from koalas to lorikeets.

The Oceanview Walk showcases panoramic coastal views and the city skyline, with occasional whale sightings during migration season.

While the Rainforest Circuit may not be suitable for wheelchairs and strollers due to steeper sections, the Oceanview Walk provides assisted access.

There are some great restaurant options within walking distance from the Mysa Motel. You can find Italian, Thai, Mexican, classic Australian, and anything else you might want!

We also recommend heading to a supermarket tonight before you head out on your activity tomorrow.

Pick up some yummy cheeses, crackers, fruits, vegetable sticks, and dips to snack on for your lunch or afternoon snack while you are out adventuring!

Day 3 – Surfers Paradise

Today on your Gold Coast itinerary, head to Mariner’s Cove Marina for an epic day out on the water!

Pick up some breakfast on the way to the marina and head out on some jet skis for the morning.

This jet ski adrenaline ride will take you on a guided tour through the scenic waterways and as far as North Stradbroke Island, allowing you to discover hidden gems and iconic landmarks along the coast.

When you arrive, you watch a safety video and learn about the rules of the waterways.

All participants receive comprehensive instructions and safety equipment before embarking on the jet ski safari. No licence or experience is necessary which makes it fun for both beginners and experienced riders.

Professional guides will accompany you to guide you throughout the journey, pointing out landmarks and ensuring a safe and memorable experience for guests.

We went with Jet Ski Safari Gold Coast and they were fantastic. I was a beginner and Jarryd has been on a jet ski before but our guides Pandora and Connor were magnificent catering to different skill levels.

They give you tips and advice to make your ride more pleasurable.

You don’t get too wet at all on the jet skis (that’s if you don’t fall off). It is up to you if you want to head back to the hotel for a shower before all the other awesome activities you have planned for the day.

This is such a fun adrenaline-fuelled adventure and a unique way to explore the Gold Coast’s waterways and canals.

After all that adrenaline, you’ll probably be hungry so it’s time to grab some lunch. At the Mariner’s Cove Marina, you can find lots of excellent fish and chips restaurants.

You can eat your meal overlooking the marina. Since you are on the coast, fish and chips is a classic Aussie meal that you should definitely indulge in!

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire is also located at the Mariner’s Cove Marina. After lunch, you can get straight out on a boat and explore the other side of the waterways that you didn’t see on the jet skis.

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire has several electric boats which offer a sustainable and easy way to navigate the canals and rivers.

The staff will go through the potential routes, local rules, and safety tips before you take off.

You don’t need a license to hire the boat and it’s a great way to have freedom and flexibility while exploring the Gold Coast’s waterways.

Make sure you have your snacks and drinks for this afternoon boat adventure.

Enjoy the city views, and relax with your favourite music playing through the boat’s Bluetooth sound system.

These guys offer such a unique and leisurely experience to enjoy the Gold Coast’s stunning waterways. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Gold Coast from above with the team at Gold Coast Heli Tours . You can honestly see the entire city and area, with panoramic views from the Gold Coast beaches all the way out to the Hinterland.

We can not recommend this tour enough. This is a family-run company that offers thrilling helicopter rides where you will enjoy breathtaking aerial views of iconic landmarks, golden beaches, and the vibrant cityscape.

You can head out during the day or wait till sunset and see the golden light on the city.

The pilots have so much knowledge and provide commentary through your headset so you can learn about the history and culture of the area.

Nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast, Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is a charming culinary treasure.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting ambiance that feels like a cozy Italian trattoria.

They have indoor or outdoor dining. The night we went, it was a little chilly but they had the heaters outside and it was cozy.

Whether you indulge in their wood-fired pizzas, classic pasta creations, or delightful seafood options, every bite transports you to the streets of Italy.

The staff were so friendly and the food was delicious. If you are looking for Italian flavours on the Gold Coast Costa, check out Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria.

If you are not into Italian, there are many other restaurant options in the Surfers Paradise area.

Consider switching up your accommodation tonight and stay in Surfers Paradise at the fabulous Meriton Suites .

Having stayed at Meriton Suites Gold Coast ourselves, the views are incredible and their rooms are not badly priced.

The suites are spacious, well-appointed with full kitchen setup and a balcony. The hotel is 78 floors (252 metres) so depending on your room location, you will have an excellent view.

The staff are super friendly and helpful and the location is perfectly located near the beach and various shops, restaurants, and attractions.

The tram is right behind the hotel if you need to head to another part of the Gold Coast or the airport.

Stay here for a couple of nights to be near all your activities for the next few days!

Day 4 – Surfers Paradise and Northern Gold Coast

On day 4 of your 7 day Gold Coast itinerary, you will be spending the day in the Surfers Paradise area and surrounds.

Take an early morning stroll along the beach of Surfers Paradise and witness a breathtaking sunrise that paints the sky with vibrant hues.

As you walk along golden sands, the gentle sound of crashing waves creates a soothing ambiance.

Pause for a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring beauty and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Watching the sunrise along the beach path of Surfers Paradise is a serene and uplifting experience that connects you with the natural wonders of the Gold Coast.

You can rent a bike and ride along the Surfers Paradise boulevard if you want! The boulevard is a picturesque route, lined with palm trees and overlooking the glistening ocean.

Gold Coast Beaches are stunning so take advantage of these mornings. Walk or ride down to ESPL Coffee in Surfer Paradise and grab breakfast to start your day.

Head to One of the Theme Parks

It is fun for all ages. Everyone can indulge in exhilarating water slides or relax in the sun-drenched pools.

Spending a half-day to a full day here ensures ample time for water-based excitement.

Movie World is another popular choice for everyone, combining thrilling rides with cinematic experiences.

Explore movie-themed attractions, enjoy spectacular live shows, and embark on exciting roller coasters inspired by iconic films.

So you can choose from a number of theme parks for the day. Spend the whole day at one theme park, or choose to switch between different locations.

We have not mentioned Sea World as we are still on the fence about this theme park company. Sea World does great conservation work but they are also breeding dolphins within their facility for entertainment. We are not a fan of this and would not visit Sea World ourselves.

This is our opinion and we ask you to please your own research and decide whether you want to visit or not.

Day 5 – Lamington National Park

On day 5 of this amazing Gold Coast itinerary, explore the stunning landscapes of Lamington National Park.

After breakfast, start the drive out to Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

The journey takes you through charming towns and winding roads, surrounded by lush greenery. It is stunning, so take your time and stop at all the viewpoints.

Within an hour, you’ll arrive at the Lamington National Park, where hiking trails and stunning lookout points await. Immerse yourself in the park’s diverse ecosystem, filled with flora and fauna.

The drive from Surfers Paradise to Lamington National Park is a captivating adventure, offering a refreshing escape into nature’s tranquility.

The Rainforest Circuit Walk in Lamington National Park is a captivating journey through a lush and ancient rainforest.

The trail winds through towering trees and vibrant greenery, providing a peaceful and refreshing walk. We found ourselves mesmerised by the diversity of plant life, with ferns, moss-covered rocks, and delicate wildflowers adorning the trail.

This loop walk is very easy and will only take about 30 minutes from the Burra Binna Lodge carpark.

If you do the walk early in the morning or late in the evening, the lighting is gorgeous coming through the trees. You can hear all the native birds and you may even see a kangaroo!

Binna Burra Lodge has a restaurant there that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The rustic restaurant offers a menu showcasing fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared by its chefs.

Binna Burra Lodge offers inside dining by the fire or al fresco on the terrace or on the deck with a beautiful view.

Elevate your stay in the area with a tiny home at Binna Burra Lodge ! This is where we stayed and it was an amazing experience.

As we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the charm and tranquility of the lodge nestled on the border of the Lamington National Park. The location of this accommodation is stunning.

The Tiny Houses are located on the Bellbird clifftop, with uninterrupted views of the Ships Stern Range with their full-sized glass wall. You can sit inside on those chilly morning or evenings or make the most of the outside deck and take it all in.

The Tiny Wild Home was so cozy and thoughtfully designed providing a unique blend of comfort and immersion in nature. Surrounded by greenery and breathtaking views, we honestly felt a deep sense of connection to the natural world.

Each tiny home was equipped with modern amenities, with comfortable bedding to a well-equipped kitchenette while still maintaining a rustic charm. It’s a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the beauty and serenity of the natural world.

Make sure you wake up for sunrise. You will experience the most amazing sunrise from your Tiny Wild Home, even laying in bed.

From watching stunning sunrises and sunsets to stargazing under clear night skies, this place is an experience of its own.

We highly recommend staying at Tiny Wild Homes, Binna Burra Lodge .

Day 6 – Tamborine National Park

One Day 6 of this Gold Coast itinerary, continue exploring Lamington National Park before heading over to Tamborine National Park!

Do not miss this one! Waking up in the Tiny Wild Homes was a truly magical experience as the sun slowly rose over Lamington National Park.

The serene ambiance and breathtaking views created an unforgettable start to the day, filling me with a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded me.

You can have breakfast in your Tiny Wild House or head up to the Binna Burra Lodge for breakfast.

They offer a range of different breakfasts and great coffee. If it is a chilly morning, you can sit by the cozy fireplace or sit on the deck and enjoy the sun and view.

The staff were very friendly and accommodated for different dietary requirements.

The Caves Hike in Lamington National Park is a captivating trail that unveils the park’s natural wonders.

With a length of approximately 4 kms, the hike typically takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and exploration along the way.

As you embark on the trail, you’ll meander through ancient rainforests, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation.

The path gradually ascends, leading you to magnificent rock formations and hidden caves.

These caves serve as a testament to the park’s geological history and provide a unique opportunity for exploration.

Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges.

The tranquil sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves accompany you on your journey, creating a serene and immersive experience.

The days can heat up, especially in the summer, so make sure you have enough water for the hike and sun protection.

Also, there are no facilities along the trail so make sure you go to the toilet before you leave. Like any time being in nature, please leave no trace.

Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this secluded corner of the park. It really is just gorgeous.

The drive to Tamborine National Park from Burra Binna Lodge will take about 1 hour to reach Cedar Creek Falls entrance. As you ascend into the mountainous region, the air becomes cooler and crisp, signalling your arrival at this lush rainforest retreat.

The well-paved roads guide you through the park, allowing you to explore its many walking trails and breathtaking lookouts.

Along the way, you will be surrounded by dense forests, towering trees, and vibrant birdlife, creating a sense of tranquility and natural beauty.

Cedar Creek Falls is a picturesque waterfall nestled in the Tamborine National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The waterfall cascades down a rocky ledge into a tranquil swimming hole, inviting visitors to cool off and relax.

With its natural beauty and peaceful ambiance, Cedar Creek Falls is a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility in nature.

The walk down is well pathed with some stairs. Anyone with a bit of fitness will be fine. There is a viewing platform near the beginning of the path if you do not want to walk all the way down.

The best place to eat in the area is Rainforest Restaurant and Bar at Cedar Creek Lodge.

The tranquil ambiance and natural elements of the restaurant create a serene backdrop for your meal. Get dressed up and make a night of it.

The menu showcases a fusion of flavours using locally sourced ingredients, with options ranging from fresh seafood to succulent steaks and creative vegetarian dishes. We had a variety of dishes and they were all magnificent.

The restaurant offers inside dining or outside dining on the deck area where you can enjoy your meal amidst the rainforest garden.

They have a bar where you can grab a drink before your dinner or after.

This is another accommodation we loved and highly recommend staying here. The Glamping Tents at Cedar Creek Lodge near Tamborine National Park are for those who want a camping getaway in luxury style.

Inside the Glamping Tents, you are greeted by a spacious and beautifully designed interior.

The tent is equipped with 2 comfortable queen size beds, cozy furnishings, coffee and tea setup, lamps, an outside modern bathroom, and a lovely deck with your own fire pit and sitting area.

There are large windows that you can roll up to allow natural light to flood in.

In the evenings, you can stargaze from the comfort of your own outdoor seating area while keeping warm by the fire pit. They also have games in the tent for you to enjoy.

There is one glamping tent that has a heated swimming pool, offering a great way to relax overlooking bushland. Get disconnected from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world.

Day 7 – Hot Air Balloons, Alpacas and Back to the City

This is the last day of the Gold Coast itinerary! You will finish the morning in the Hinterland and drive to the airport to head home.

A hot air balloon over the hinterland is a must-do on your Gold Coast itinerary! We highly recommend the guys at Hot Air . They were so professional and full of so much knowledge.

You will have to get up early, but it will be worth it! As the sun begins to rise, you will get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure that will take you soaring above the breathtaking landscapes.

As the balloon takes to the skies, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the stunning hinterland, with its rolling hills, farms, verdant forests, and picturesque vineyards.

Drifting with the wind, the pilot (Stu) points out iconic landmarks and tells you all about the area. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the region’s natural wonders, watching as the landscape is bathed in the warm hues of the rising sun.

The tranquility of the experience is truly captivating, offering a sense of serenity and freedom as you float above the world below.

Take your camera or phone to get some great photos. Just make sure they are attached to you somehow so you do not lose anything over the edge. The company has a camera on board for group photos also.

It’s an adventure that will leave you with a sense of wonder and an appreciation for the natural wonders that surround us. It is a great way to finish your Gold Coast itinerary.

After touch down, you may get a chance to walk inside the balloon. It was great to check out. The team will then take you to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards to have a glass of champagne and a cooked breakfast.

After breakfast and the thrilling morning in the sky, calm your nerves by visiting with an alpaca. Located right next door to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is Mountview Alpaca Farm .

Mountview Alpaca Farm is a charming and interactive destination nestled in the scenic Gold Coast hinterland.

Visitors can get up close and personal with adorable alpacas by hand-feeding them and learning about these gentle creatures.

The farm provides a picturesque setting surrounded by lush greenery, offering a serene atmosphere to relax with your alpaca.

The guys at Mountview Alpaca Farm do great work. They have a few alpacas that are therapy animals and the owners take them into hospitals to visit patients.

Animals lovers will definitely have to check this place out!

As your time in the Gold Coast comes to an end, you have the option to drive back to either Gold Coast or Brisbane to catch your flight home.

If you choose to drive back to the Gold Coast, you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the beautiful coastal scenery one last time. The drive along the coastal highway offers stunning views of the Gold Coast beaches.

Alternatively, driving back to Brisbane gives you the chance to explore the vibrant capital city of Queensland before bidding farewell to this stunning region. Brisbane offers a mix of cultural attractions, bustling markets, and scenic parks that are worth exploring if you have some extra time before your flight. You could even spend the night.

Getting Around the Gold Coast

If you do not have your own wheels, there are many ways to get around the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

The Gold Coast has an excellent public transport system managed by TransLink , offering bus, tram, and train services.

The G:link light rail system , also known as ‘the G’, runs from Helensvale to Broadbeach, connecting several main points, including Southport and Surfers Paradise.

Surfside Buslines operate numerous bus routes throughout the region. A Go Card, a pre-paid travel card, can be used across all TransLink services.

If you prefer the convenience of your own vehicle, car rental services are readily available.

Driving gives you the flexibility to explore further afield areas like the Hinterland’s national parks.

Do note that parking, especially in popular areas like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, can sometimes be challenging to find and may be paid.

The Gold Coast is very pedestrian and bike-friendly, with extensive pathways and bike lanes.

It’s an ideal way to explore the beachfront areas. Bike rental services are available at numerous locations.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also popular on the Gold Coast. They offer a convenient and often time-efficient way of getting around, especially if you’re travelling in a group or have lots of luggage.

Lastly, the Gold Coast also has a network of waterways, and taking a ferry can be a scenic and leisurely way to travel, especially around areas like Main Beach and South Stradbroke Island.

Planning your routes and transport methods in advance can help you make the most of your visit to the Gold Coast.

Getting to the Gold Coast

There are a few ways to get to the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

Flying into the Gold Coast is very simple. Gold Coast Airport , also known as Coolangatta Airport, is your gateway to this stunning region where there is so much to do.

The Coolangatta Airport is located in the southern part of the city. As you fly in, enjoy beautiful views of the coastline and hinterland, so try and get a window seat.

There are many transportation options, from car hire services to taxis, Ubers, and the SkyBus service, providing transfers to key Gold Coast locations. We picked up a rental car and the process was very simple and easy.

The airlines that fly into the Gold Coast airport are Air Asia, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Scoot, and Hong Kong Airlines.

If you can not fly direct from your destination, you may have a connecting flight through another city or you can fly into Brisbane and drive down to the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is well-connected with several major highways and motorways. If you’re driving as a day trip from Brisbane , the most direct route is via the Pacific Motorway (M1), which takes approximately one hour.

This scenic route provides stunning views of the Gold Coast skyline as you approach the city.

If you’re coming from the south, you can take the Pacific Highway (also known as the M1 in New South Wales), which connects with the Gold Coast Highway.

This route will bring you up from New South Wales through beautiful coastal towns such as Byron Bay and Tweed Heads.

The Gold Coast Highway is a major arterial road that runs parallel to the coastline, providing access to the city’s key attractions and beachside suburbs. It’s a scenic drive with ocean views on one side and high rises on the other.

Taking a bus to the Gold Coast is a cost-effective and straightforward option. Long-distance services like Greyhound Australia connect the Gold Coast to major cities like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, usually arriving at Surfers Paradise’s Coach Transit Centre.

From Brisbane, Translink buses offer regular services to the Gold Coast, taking just over an hour.

Upon reaching the Gold Coast, local bus services by Surfside Buslines and Translink provide easy access to popular attractions.

For regular public transportation users, consider purchasing a Go Card, a prepaid card valid on all Translink services in South East Queensland.

Check the latest timetables and plan routes in advance for a smooth journey. Taking a bus allows you to relax and enjoy the scenic journey to the Gold Coast.

An Outdoor Lover’s Road Trip on the Oregon Coast

From crabbing to kayaking, oregon’s stretch of 101 has nature, scenic beauty, and adventure in spades..

It’s not just Oregon’s myriad rivers, towering evergreens, and Crater Lake National Park that make the state an outdoor paradise. More than 360 miles of coastline have turned the Oregon Coast into an essential retreat for Portland residents for decades. And thanks to a landmark 1967 law that preserved public access, “the people’s coast” is a wealth of pristine nature open to all.

In spring, you’ll see hills awash in yellow scotch broom and pink rhododendron bushes. Temperatures peak in the summer, and winter and spring are the prime seasons for whale-watching. The coast is great for spotting wildlife like birds and seals, and opportunities for hiking, kayaking, fishing, surfing, crabbing, and clamming abound.

There’s no wrong way to do a road trip here. It’s just developed enough with a selection of boutique lodgings, state parks for camping, and small coastal towns that you can easily be spontaneous or follow a more prescribed plan. This six-day road trip itinerary follows the Oregon portion of Highway 101 starting in the South Coast up to the North Coast before looping back to Portland .

Day 1: Portland to Coos Bay

Oregon’s Bay Area and the largest city on the coast (with a population of about 16,000), Coos Bay is the commercial hub of the South Coast. It’s the biggest port between San Francisco and Seattle, and experiences like the Coos History Museum shed light on its shipbuilding and lumber milling history, providing context for the many outdoor adventures to be had in a landscape that spans long, sandy beaches and forests.

Where to stay in Coos Bay

Bay Point Landing takes glamping to new heights with RV sites, Airstreams, or cabins that immerse you in nature, style, and comfort, and amenities include a saltwater pool and fitness center.

For golfers, about 30 minutes farther south in Bandon, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has some of the country’s premier public golf links. And they recently opened their sixth course, a 19-hole short course that takes players through rolling dunes.

Or camp a stone’s throw from the breathtaking, sandy beaches at Sunset Bay State Park . (If you want to stay in one of the eight yurts, be sure to book in advance.) Explore the area via a network of hiking trails that run through coastal forests, seasonal wildflowers, and rugged cliffs.

Gold Beach, the gateway to the Rogue River, and especially Otter Point headland, a great spot for a day of walking among the sandstone and spotting sea lions. You can also see one of Oregon’s only two pockets of old-growth redwoods at the 1.2-mile loop Redwood Nature Trail .

The 7 Devils Brewing Company , a spot with a patio that channels the region’s bohemian spirit with handmade furniture and local art that accompany the hand-crafted ales and bites made with regional ingredients. Dinner destinations include Restaurant O , which serves French and Italian creations, such as mussels in a vin blanc sauce and fettuccine alfredo. Or check out Black Market Gourmet, which sources local seafood, beef, and produce for prepared foods like Oregon Dungeness crab dip or smoked beef brisket. (Or opt for a sit-down dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.)

Detour worth taking

About three hours inland from Coos Bay, Ashland has all the relaxed vibes of a small town but with big culture thanks to a thriving arts scene. Its world-famous Shakespeare festival runs from March to October. Bonus: Surrounding local hot springs mean you can get your dose of nature here, too.

Days 2–3: Coos Bay to Florence

At the mouth of the Siuslaw River, about an hour north of Coos Bay, Florence’s Old Town makes a charming home base for exploring North America’s largest coastal dunes directly to its south. Take a sandboard or dune buggy down the famed dunes, or enjoy other adventures such as the Sea Lion Caves and whale-watching.

Where to stay in Florence

Book a room at the award-winning River House Inn on the Siuslaw River waterfront in Old Town; it’s within walking distance of the area’s top restaurants, such as the Waterfront Depot and Bridgewater Fish House , as well as galleries, shops, and cafés. Or stay about six miles north to catch sunsets at the oceanfront resort Driftwood Shores .

Instead, you could also immerse yourself in the 47 miles of dunes stretching between Florence and Coos Bay by reserving a campsite (or one of 10 yurts) at Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park . Or go to Florence’s northern neighbor 30 minutes away, Yachats (believed to mean “dark water at the foot of the mountain” and pronounced “YAH-hots”), for a stay at the Overleaf Lodge; every room has an ocean view and you can enjoy access to hikes, including the Ya’Xaik and 804 trails.

There’s also the option to unplug an hour up the coast from Florence at the Sylvia Beach Hotel , a historic building with author-themed rooms, like the popular Mark Twain room; it has no TVs, Wi-Fi, or telephones. Located in a Newport cove, the Ocean House has coastal views from every room.

The dunes, which draw visitors for the otherworldly experience of vast tracts of undulating, rippled sand that inspired the sci-fi classic Dune . Hiking affords chances to spot wildlife like elk or hunt for wild mushrooms, while exploring by buggy is a popular way to rev up your adrenaline, and you can head to Cleawox Lake just south of Florence for swimming and water sports.

A hiker’s dream, Yachats’s 804 Trail is a 1.7-mile in-and-out hike with plenty of opportunities for delving into the area’s natural beauty, including tide-pooling and bird-watching. It connects directly to several trails: the 7.4-mile Amanda’s Trail, which leads to the Cape Perpetua Stone Shelter ; the small and beautiful Smelt Sands State Recreation Site ; and the Ya’Xaik Trail–Gerdemann Preserve Loop Hike , a 2.1-mile loop trail established in 2013 by several committed locals.

Yachats also has its share of small businesses with artsy coastal vibes, such as gem and mineral store Planet Yachats and galleries Earthworks , Touchstone , and Wave .

Locally roasted coffee on the riverfront patio at River Roasters in Florence—it has a view of the landmark art deco drawbridge that spans the river.

Worthwhile breakfast spots in Yachats include Bread & Roses for fresh baked goods and Green Salmon for fair trade coffee. If you’re up for a bigger meal, try Ona for fine dining with global influences and local ingredients, or the restaurant at the Drift Inn , which hosts live music every night.

Abundant dining options await in Newport, including Local Ocean , a dockside seafood grill, and Sorella , an eatery that serves Italian classics like pizza, homemade pasta, and more.

Worth a stopover

Situated on Yaquina Bay, about an hour north of Florence, Newport’s Oregon Coast Aquarium is a scenic site in and of itself, and Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is home to the state’s tallest lighthouse, plenty of tide pools, and whale-watching lookouts.

A road trip along Oregon’s coast will be fueled by excellent meals, like Meridian Restaurant & Bar’s Dungeness crab cakes.

Days 3–4: Florence to Pacific City

Heading north about two hours up the coast brings you to Pacific City, an off-the-beaten-path town set among state-protected natural areas along the Nestucca River. Stops include a dramatic 200-foot dune adjacent to its own offshore Haystack Rock (taller yet not as well-known as the one in Cannon Beach) and the Three Capes Scenic Loop, with opportunities to check out the lighthouse at Cape Meares and picnic on the beach. You can go fishing and clamming or kayaking and hiking, or simply while away the day on the beach’s soft sand.

Where to stay in Pacific City

Located on the beach at the edge of Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, the Headlands Lodge boasts a sublime location next to the massive dune that’s prime for climbing and sunset views. It’s easy to go tide-pooling among the abundant mussel beds (the resort’s Adventure Coaches can set you up) and watch the surfers, or even take a lesson yourself. Pro tip: Book one of the two-bedroom cottages for incredible ocean views and a private balcony or patio. Enjoy seasonal, made-from-scratch fare from the Meridian Restaurant , like local Manila clams served with chorizo and grilled focaccia, which takes room service to another level. You could also stay across the street at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda or glamp in Airstreams at Hart’s Camp .

Another option is Depoe Bay, which is on the way to Pacific City and a great spot for whale-watching. Try Channel House , where every room has its own hot tub, and Whale Cove Inn , home to the lauded Restaurant Beck.

Keep going north, about 40 minutes beyond Pacific City, for family-friendly options in Tillamook that include camping in one of the yurts or cabins at Cape Lookout State Park , Sheltered Nook’s tiny houses, and a covered wagon or tent campsite at Twins Ranch .

McPhillips Beach in Pacific City’s Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, a mile of sand with the geometric basalt structures formed by former lava flows and crumbling sandstone that define much of the coast here.

The Nestucca River, Bob Straub State Park , and Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge all draw kayakers to their pristine waterways. Nestucca Adventures will set you up with kayak or paddleboard rentals. Stop before or after for a meal at the riverside picnic tables of the neighboring River House . Or you could try a fishing trip from Cape Kiwanda with Pacific City Dory Fishing Charters .

About 30 minutes from Pacific City, scenic Netarts Bay has opportunities for shell fishing at low tide. Stop for dinner at the Schooner for fresh, local seafood and foraged ingredients in a dining room next to the boat launch.

The Chef’s Tasting Menu at Restaurant Beck in Depoe Bay, the brainchild of James Beard Award semifinalist Justin Wills, which uses the finest foraged and local farm ingredients.

While several attractions in Tillamook nod to the area’s dairyland past and present, including the eponymous national cheesemaker, Degarde Brewing’s tasting room is a chance to sample suds based on historic traditions and experimentation. Try the Framboise Noire, a wild ale with black raspberries that’s aged in oak barrels for two years.

Day 5: Pacific City to Manzanita

As you wind your way up the North Coast, be sure to take the 101 for stunning coastal views and tucked-away beaches. Manzanita, an hour north of Pacific City, is so scenic that it inspired former Oregon governor Oswald West to make the state’s beaches free and open to all. The town’s rural vibe belies some of the coast’s best culinary experiences, and nearby Cannon Beach is a larger, more well-known destination with more restaurants, shops, and services.

Where to stay in Manzanita

Coast Cabins offers a range of tasteful accommodation options in Manzanita, from private homes with midcentury-modern architecture and decor to vacation rental apartments, all with access to a spa and gym. The sleek and intimate Arch Cape Loft is 10 minutes north of Manzanita in Arch Cape, and its seven rooms are almost like studio apartments, with kitchenettes and private entry.

Hotel fans will want to head to the McMenamins Gearhart Hotel , first built in 1890 and part of the region’s history as a vacation destination, or the Cannon Beach Hotel Collection for a selection of rooms (many with fireplaces) across four boutique hotels in New England–style buildings near downtown Cannon Beach.

The Sand Dune Pub in Manzanita is a classic roadhouse that’s been serving dishes like burgers and chili-cheese fries since 1935. Enjoy your meal on the patio with an Oregon craft beer or cocktail. Another old-school spot with a laid-back vibe, Driftwood serves up seafood and steak from local purveyors in Cannon Beach. Or try Ecola Seafoods to sample the freshest of the ocean’s bounty in a casual atmosphere.

Short Sand Beach, in a protected cove in Oswald West State Park , which is worth the brief hike through the forest. You’ll find campfires and surfers on a shore awash with massive trunks of driftwood. Look for the plaque at a lookout point dedicated to Matt Kramer, a journalist whose coverage helped pass the 1967 bill that made Oregon’s beaches public land.

Many hotels on this road trip, such as the Cannery Pier Hotel, have spectacular waterfront views.

Day 6: Manzanita to Astoria

Just under an hour north on the 101 brings you to Astoria, the northernmost town on the coast and a bohemian enclave. Also known as the setting for movies (including The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop), it’s on a stretch of coast known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific”—famous for some of the roughest waters in the world at the mouth of the Columbia River, where it meets the Pacific Ocean.

Where to stay in Astoria

Located at the end of a historic pier that extends 600 feet into the Columbia River, the boutique Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa has river views from each of its 46 rooms, where you can watch the ships as they pass by. Book one of the rooms on the north side for a view of the Astoria-Megler bridge, the longest continuous truss bridge in North America.

Tornadoes tear through the southeastern U.S. as storms leave 3 dead

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — Forecasters warned a wave of dangerous storms in the U.S. could march through parts of the South early Thursday, after storms a day earlier spawned damaging tornadoes and massive hail, leaving two dead in Tennessee and one dead in North Carolina.

The storms continue an outbreak of torrential rain and tornadoes that has cut across the country this week, from the Plains to the Midwest and now the southeastern U.S. At least four people have died in storms since Monday.

Amid Wednesday's storms, the National Weather Service continued issuing tornado warnings that stretch past midnight in North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri and Kentucky. Parts of Arkansas and Mississippi were also under a tornado watch through the pre-dawn hours.

Why it feels like tornadoes are becoming more common, according to an expert

One storm that rumbled across northeastern Tennessee on Wednesday brought high winds that knocked down power lines and trees. Bob Brooks, the sheriff in Claiborne County about an hour north of Knoxville, said a 22-year-old man was in a car when he was fatally struck by one of the trees.

A second person was killed in the city of Columbia in Maury County, where the National Weather Service said a likely tornado had touched down. Columbia is just south of Nashville.

Homes were damaged and people injured, according to Lynn Thompson, assistant director of Maury County 911. Thompson told The Associated Press that he could not provide any further details: "We're getting overloaded right now."

Rita Thompson, a spokesperson for Maury Regional Health, said the hospital had received five patients, including the person who died. Another was in serious condition and three had injuries that were not life-threatening, she said.

The storms also prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a temporary ground stop at Nashville International Airport and the National Weather Service to issue a tornado emergency — its highest alert level — for other nearby areas south of the state's capital, including Chapel Hill and Eagleville.

Meanwhile, torrential rain and thunderstorms led to water rescues northeast of Nashville.

"Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order," the National Weather Service warned when it issued a flash flood emergency.

In North Carolina, a state of emergency was declared Wednesday night for Gaston County, west of Charlotte, following a large storm that toppled power lines and severed trees, including one that landed on a car. One person in the car was killed and another was taken to a hospital, officials said.

The storms rolled into the region Wednesday after parts of the central United States were battered Monday by heavy rain, strong winds, hail and tornadoes, including a deadly twister that ripped through an Oklahoma town and killed one person. Then, on Tuesday, the Midwest took the brunt of the bad weather.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes touched down in parts of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana on Tuesday.

In Michigan, tornadoes swirled through the southwestern part of the state, in and around Kalamazoo County, according to the National Weather Service. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for four counties.

Kalamazoo County's Portage area was hard hit as a FedEx facility was ripped apart, leaving about 50 people temporarily trapped inside because of downed power lines.

Travis Wycoff ventured out Tuesday night after seeing on radar that a tornado had touched down in the Portage area, and he said he helped an elderly couple out of their partially collapsed home and freed a service dog from another home.

"There were a lot of people running through the streets trying to find people and their pets," Wycoff said. "It was just a lot of chaos."

In the adjacent Pavilion Township, more than a dozen homes were destroyed in a mobile home park and 16 people were injured, said Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller.

Samantha Smith clutched a box Wednesday afternoon outside her mother's partially wrecked home in Pavilion Township. Inside the box were her grandmother's ashes. Being able to recover the most cherished of items offered Smith a rare moment of relief amid the storm's devastation. She said her parents and brother were injured during the storm but survived.

"I have thanked God probably a billion times since this happened yesterday," she said. "My kids are healthy and good. We just gotta make back up what we lost."

Tornadoes were also confirmed in Pennsylvania just outside Pittsburgh, in central Arkansas and in northern West Virginia. The West Virginia twister was at least the 11th tornado this year in the state, which sees two tornadoes in an average year.

Both the Plains and Midwest have been hammered by tornadoes this spring.
