Immersive dinosaur experience entertains and transports families back to prehistoric ages

ATLANTA (Nov. 2, 2021) – Imagine Exhibitions brings a dinosaur-filled indoor experience to the Atlanta metro area for local families and visitors to get up-close and personal with larger-than-life replicas of the most fascinating, fan-favorite prehistoric inhabitants! Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure opens Nov.19, 2021, in Alpharetta’s North Point Mall.

Tickets go on sale on Nov. 2 and can be purchased at DinoSafari.com . The limited-engagement, experiential family walk-through attraction will run through April 8, 2022.

“Atlanta families will not want to miss Dino Safari,” said Tom Zaller, CEO of Imagine Exhibitions. “From the Sauropod Slide to interactive games and the sheer awe of giant moving dinosaurs, it’s the perfect activity for dinosaur fans of all ages to become immersed in an entertaining and educational globetrotting dinosaur adventure.”

In this walk-through adventure, attendees will meet and interact with more than 30 life-sized dinosaurs, including the T.rex of North America and the Spinosaurus from Africa. With the help of scientifically accurate installations and realistic moving animatronics, Dino Safari will transport guests back millions of years to get up close and personal with prehistoric creatures in a replica of their natural habitat.

Located in the upper level of North Point Mall, the experience showcases how dinosaurs evolved over time and offer hands-on challenges for visitors to solve, along with depictions of natural elements that often occurred during this time, such as earthquakes. The thrilling adventure features captivating VR technology, spectacular installations, and an interactive space for children. Limited birthday party rooms will also be available, visit DinoSafari.com for booking details.

The exhibition was created by Atlanta-based Imagine Exhibitions in collaboration with world-renowned Ph.D. Dinosaur Paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson, who is one of only 150 full-time professional dinosaur paleontologists in the world.

Came here with the family and it was definitely a cool experience. Very interactive. The staff at the front, and throughout the experience is very friendly. They tell you that you can touch the dinosaurs that you can reach without crossing the ropes. There's a big sandbox to "dig up" dinosaur bones with paintbrushes. I really didn't expect my teenager to enjoy himself, but he had fun too! That pleasantly surprised me. I think we all learned a few new things about where certain dinosaurs lived, and some dinosaur names we hadn't heard of before. The ONLY reason it's not getting a full 5 stars is because of a couple of reasons - 1 - A couple of the dinos could use maintenance. One of them has long claws that are a little broken. (You can see the inner structure poking out.) The small T-Rex looks like his eyes are having issues opening back up after it "blinks." 2 - The only staff member that wasn't very friendly was the cashier at the souvenir shop. He seemed like he really didn't enjoy his job. It's not the most fun position to have there, I'm sure, but it does have an effect on the full experience for customers. Definitely a place to check out for anyone that has kids that have any interest in dinosaurs.

There are so many dinosaurs in this exhibit that I have not seen before! That is hard to do as my daughter loves dinosaurs and we have been to a LOT of dino exhibits. Most of the dinosaurs make noise and move. There is an audio tour you can access that is more for kids but entertaining to listen to. The dinosaurs each have a name plate and information about them that is easy to read. It is a little dark with spot lights on the dinosaurs. Makes the dinosaurs stand out. My 3 year old wasn't scared. They have interactive exhibits like a dino dig, race to see if you can out run a raptor, a dino slide, coloring that you can turn the picture into "life" on the projector screen. There is a cornhole type game to feed either carnivore or herbivore. At the end there is a virtual reality game for both Littles and big kids beside the gift shop. The experience was an enjoyable one for both kiddos and adults.

Very cute exhibit. Restrooms are clean and fully stocked. I think more lighting should be added to the actual coloring area and other areas in the exhibit with better directions signs.. Also the marker need to be checked daily so the children will have multiple colors to color the dinosaurs. I won't hurt to redo the layout and completely close off areas guest should not be. Overall cute little place .

Lots of cool dinosaurs that look realistic and move around. Really great for kids under 11 or so. Mine are 6 & 8 and had a blast. I love how it was organized by continent and that the kids had a passport with landmarks to track their visit. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon :)

I came here for a yelp event and all i have to say is WOW ! It was a neat surprise because it went beyond my expectation. You are greeted right away and the process to go in is simple and quick. My 3 kids ages 7,5 and 3 absolutely loved it. They where so happy and excited looking at all the dinosaurs! I love how every room gets more creative and the lighting is beautiful. Their party room looks cool as well! We will definitely be back !

We took our nearly 2 year old here and on the website says there is discount for military. We pulled out our IDs to show and he still charged us the entire price. We weren't offered a receipt. If it wasn't for that we would have definitely given 5 stars.

Extremely aggressive customer service. The employee at the gift shop yelled and screamed at us from all the way across the store, and threatened us when we were leaving. Never experienced this before in any other place.

Travel back in time to walk among the dinosaurs at Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure! This fun, family-friendly experience will let you get up-close and personal with your favorite dinosaurs. Learn more about the experience in this review of Dino Safari.

A special thanks to Imagine Exhibitions for providing us with tickets to Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure in Atlanta ! As always, all opinions are my own.

Grab your passport to Pangea and get ready to meet over 30 different species of dinosaurs!

This walk-through attraction was created by Atlanta-based Imagine Exhibitions (the same people who produced Harry Potter: The Exhibition ) in collaboration with Ph.D. Dinosaur Paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson.

The exhibit features realistic animatronic dinosaurs, scientific exploration, and fun interactive elements to immerse you in the prehistoric world of the dinosaur.

Ready to take a step back in time? Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure is currently showing in Atlanta, Boston, San Antonio, and Las Vegas.

Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure Review

Your Dino Safari walk-thru experience begins with a passport to Pangea. You’ll receive this small passport booklet and a crayon. Inside the passport is a scavenger hunt of different dinosaurs, unique features, and plant life for you to find and check off as you walk through the exhibit.

You can also scan a QR code at the beginning of the experience to get access to the audio guide and music that will add to your safari experience. It’s not necessary to use the audio guide, but it’s great if you’ve got someone who wants to learn all the things about dinosaurs.

The journey through Pangea (the giant contiguous landmass that all the continents used to be a part of) is broken out into the continents we’re familiar with today. You’ll learn about what each continent would have been like as part of Pangea and see the dinosaurs that were native to that area.

You’ll get to meet some of your favorite dinosaurs and maybe even discover a few you hadn’t even heard of.

Don’t miss your opportunity to take a picture with the T. Rex!

At the end of the experience is a “fun zone” where you can do an interactive digital coloring game that brings your drawing to life, “feed” dinosaurs in a corn-hole-type game, play on an balancing course, race against a dinosaur, and put together a dinosaur puzzle.

The experience exits into the gift shop where you can buy dinosaur toys, candy, clothes, and stuffed animals.

This is also where you’ll find the Virtual Reality simulators where you can go on additional adventures like flying through the mountains, a thrill ride in the city, and bungee jumping over a canyon.

What Was Great About the Experience

  • The displays were great. I loved the animatronic dinosaurs and the traveling theme with the passport, vintage postcard displays, and grouping the dinosaurs by region.
  • The interactive elements were a nice touch. There was a dinosaur slide, a small tunnel to crawl through between two exhibits, a sandbox archaeological dig, and some small jungle balancing courses. Just a lot of little fun things for the kids.
  • The workers were all very nice and helped add to the safari experience. One even took a bunch of amazing pictures for us with the T. Rex!

What Was Not So Great

  • We were confused about the scale of the dinosaurs. I came into this thinking they were all mostly life-sized, then we started noticing that some of the small dinosaurs were displayed really big, including the smallest dinosaur that was scaled up to like 8 feet tall. And of course some of the large dinosaurs had to be scaled down. Mostly I didn’t like that the small ones were suddenly larger-than-life; I’m used to dinosaurs being big, so I would have loved the comparison against the life-sized small dinosaurs.
  • Not a huge thing, but the Virtual Reality simulator wasn’t dinosaur-themed, just thrill- and adrenaline-themed. Maybe there was a dino-themed option, but we got put on bungee, trill ride, and flying simulators. So I just didn’t really see the point of a non-dinosaur VR add-on.

Dinosaurs are back at the OKC Zoo! The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden presents DINO SAFARI , a new immersive experience featuring life-sized, scientifically accurate animatronic dinosaurs that demonstrate movement and sounds like the prehistoric giants that once roamed the planet. Explore DINO SAFARI located in the Zoo’s lush, 6-acre pollinator garden along the Lakeside to see several dinosaurs come to life through 15 one-of-a-kind animatronic displays and 8 skeleton replicas in a COVID safer setting.

These amazingly life-like creations were created by Jurassic Park advisor “Dino Don” Lessem’s company Dino Don Inc. , the premiere maker of robot animals in the world. DINO SAFARI is open to the public now through Sunday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Stand next to one of the most popular predators of the late Cretaceous era, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, get an up-close look at a massive Woolly mammoth from the Pleistocene era as also referred to as the Great Ice Age and gaze at the 42-foot wingspan of a Tropeognathaus! Guests will also learn how the OKC Zoo is working with Tinker Air Force Base and the University of Oklahoma to help fight the extinction of Oklahoma’s beloved lizard, the horny toad, also known as the Texas horned lizard, through educational displays setup near the DINO SAFARI gift shop.

Epic dinosaur trackway in Ouray is now officially public land

One of the world’s most intriguing dinosaur trackways, located in Ouray, is now part of the public domain.

This week, the U.S. Forest Service bought three mining claims in the San Juan Mountains, totaling about 27 acres, where a sauropod trackway was excavated in recent years. The agency paid $135,000 for the land, known as the West Gold Hill Dinosaur Tracksite, using money from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

According to Bruce Schumacher, USFS senior paleontologist, the track site is unique because of its size and pattern. Most known dinosaur tracks travel in relatively straight lines. This one, however, shows the long-necked dino making a more than 180-degree turn when it walked the area during the Jurassic period roughly 150 million years ago.

The West Gold Hill Dinosaur Tracksite is only the sixth recorded instance of a turning sauropod trackway in the world, and the only one turning more than 180 degrees that’s still in tact, Schumacher said.

“This trackway preserves 134 successive steps, right and left. In that sense, it is among the longest known continuous dinosaur trackways in the world,” he said. “That’s pretty cool.”

For decades, hikers have been able to see the tracks while traversing the remote Silvershield Trail , which follows an old mining route above Ouray. The trackway lies at an altitude of 9,300 feet and hikers need to climb about 1,600 feet in elevation over the course of two miles to get there.

Hikers can also take the Oak Creek Trail to Twin Peaks Trail , which is longer but slightly less steep, said Dana Gardunio of the agency’s Ouray Ranger District.

While the tracks were accessible previously, the Silvershield Trail crossed private land. That’s why the track site’s location was long kept something of a secret. The Forest Service acquisition not only enables the agency to raise awareness about it, but also ensures the site will remain open to the public for generations of dinosaur lovers to come.

“Over the years we’ve been in situations where landowners don’t really want the public on their property. So we’re always interested in some of these parcels where it gives us more guaranteed public access to use for recreation,” Gardunio said.

The sauropod tracks were first discovered in the 1950s by a Ouray local named Rick Trujillo, but at the time only a few prints were visible. Over the last decade, Trujillo and other researchers, including Schumacher, excavated the site using shovels, whisk brooms and small hand tools. The process was relatively simple, Schumacher said, because glaciers did most of the work several thousand years ago. The remaining sandstone is easily permeable.

The fact that the prints are located at such a high altitude is equally as impressive as how many impressions there are and the pattern they follow, he added.

“The dinosaurs weren’t living in the Rocky Mountains at that elevation because the Rocky Mountains weren’t there,” Schumacher explained.

“It’s amazing to think that with the Rocky Mountain uplift in the later part of Mesozoic Age of dinosaurs, that dinosaur trackway layer was lifted up some 7,000 (or) 8,000 feet in elevation, and then glaciers came in few thousand years ago and scraped off all the overburden above this trackway, that somehow miraculously became preserved in sandstone to begin with,” he said. “It’s this amazing geologic story.”

To that end, Schumacher said the tracks themselves are likely indestructible. For visitors, that means they can walk up to them, touch them and take pictures with them. Just don’t try to make a cast molding, he said, which could damage the prints and litter the remote area.

Now that the acquisition is complete, the Forest Service plans to put pictures and information about the trackway on its website. The agency doesn’t plan to do much development at the site itself, Gardunio said, but it may improve the trailhead, which is located on private land, if traffic to the area picks up.

What is a placeholder?

A placeholder is a special onboard discount offer on a future Disney cruise. You pay $250 to get a placeholder; the $250 goes towards the cost of the future cruise.

The Fine Details for a Disney Cruise Future Cruise Placeholder

The Disney Cruise Line Onboard Booking Offer allows Guests to make a Placeholder Reservation for a future Disney cruise and enjoy 10% savings off prevailing rates as quoted on disneycruise.com, plus enjoy a reduced deposit on sailings 7 nights and longer . The offer is valid for up to 2 staterooms on one sail date per household on board, regardless of the number of adults in the household. This offer is valid for Categories 4 to 11 only. The cruise must commence within 24 months after the Placeholder Reservation was booked, or the reservation will automatically cancel.

Why should I book a Placeholder?

To save 10% off the prevailing cruise rate of your future cruise. Also, for cruises 7+ nights, the deposit is 10% of the cruise fare. Cruises under 7 nights require a 20% deposit of the cruise fare.

A Placeholder Reservation is an open-ended reservation that allows Guests to select their future sail date at a later time. A $250 deposit must be paid while on board and is fully refundable if the reservation is cancelled. Once a sail date is selected, standard cancellation fees apply.

How do you book a placeholder?

As I mentioned, you can only book your placeholder while aboard a Disney cruise. There are now two ways to book: the DCL Navigator app or going to the Future Cruise Sails desk and picking up a form.

Twist n Spout Disney Wonder San Juan to New Orleans

Where do I go to book the placeholder?

Save 10% off a Disney Cruise by Booking a Placeholder

Update March 2023 . The Future Cruise desk is not regularly open since Covid. Book your placeholder on the app. Go to the Future Cruise desk, complete the form and drop it into the box located on the desk. I always take a picture of the form after I fill it out, just in case it gets misplaced at the Future Cruise desk. Choose the save 10% off your next cruise on the app. You will be taken to the payment page. If you want to use a different card than the one you have on file, you can.

How to Book a Disney Cruise Placeholder

Your placeholder will be pending until the payment has cleared through the system. I would recommend taking a screenshot of the page in case you have any problems and don’t receive a confirmation of your placeholder.

Future Disney Cruise Pending Placeholder

When can I use my placeholder?

You must use it within 24 months of booking. Disney is strict with the deadline. If the next cruise you want to book is a day after the placeholder expires, you will not be able to use it.

Pro tip: book it as late on the cruise as you can. Don’t wait too late, though. The 10% off future cruise link disappears at midnight of the last full day. I waited too long and had to go to the Guest Services desk to request a form.

  • 10% savings applies only to sailings that commence within 24 months after the Placeholder Reservation is booked on board.

Who can book a placeholder?

Anyone over the age of 18 can book up to two staterooms on one sail date per household onboard.

Disney Magic at port in Sydney Nova Scotia

What is the catch?

You can not use a placeholder on blackout dates or for concierge-level bookings. Also, you currently need to call Disney to apply the placeholder to your chosen cruise. Therefore, if you are booking on opening day, you could be on the phone, on hold for hours.

Blockout dates apply; please contact Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent for specific block out dates. Reservations for future cruises that fall on block out dates are not eligible for the 10% savings offer. The offer cannot be combined with Florida Resident Rates, U.S. Military Rates or with any other special Rates.

Can I transfer it to my travel agent or Costco?

Yes, you have 30 days from purchasing the placeholder on the ship to transfer it to the TA of your choice if you did not name one when you purchased it.

What if I forget to book a placeholder?

I know this is the answer to question number nine, but recently Disney started a new offer for first-time cruisers. Once you disembark your first cruise, you can save up to $350 on your next one with the Castaway Club Welcome Offer . You can save up to $50 a night on the first 7 nights of your second cruise if you book it within 60 days of disembarking.

We last cruised in February 2020 before the COVID shutdown. We secured a placeholder while on board. Do you know if placeholder deadlines have been extended since cruising has not yet resumed?

As far as I know, if you book a cruise with a placeholder before it expires you can use it to book a cruise up to Fall 2022. If you have not used your placeholder and the expiry date passes DCL will refund your money.

In my Castaway Club account, my pre-COVID placeholder is listed as one of my cruises with a Jan 1, 2034 date in a GTY room.

With the placeholder to I need to cruise within 24 months or do I need to book within 24 months?

Your cruise needs to begin within 24 months.

Hi, as a very lucky cruiser in the UK we did a 3 day cruise based in the UK, whilst onboard we booked a placeholder an received a confirmation email. I have just tried to use but was informed this couldn’t be used as the option was not taken? I booked the original through a T/A and they are confused also. Disney cruise not that helpful when called, any ideas what I can do? I have checked my credit card and they have not taken payment

  • Pingback: Disney Cruise Line News - The Disney Cruise Family Travel Blog

Hi – one additional point with the new way of booking On-Board Booking placeholders – if you use the app it will default to your credit card on file. We like to purchase ours with Disney Gift Cards (since we get those at a 5% discount from Target) and there’s no way to do that via the app. You have to go to Guest Services while on the cruise, tell them you want to purchase a placeholder with a Gift Card, and they will set up the order for Disney to follow up with you when you are back home to take the payment and give you your reservation number. It’s a very inefficient system – some folks have had to wait a considerable period of time before getting that call. I ended up calling DCL and getting it arranged when I returned home by calling them instead of waiting for them to call me. Just wanted to share my experience on this specific item. Thank you for all this wonderful info!

How do we actually apply the placeholder credit when booking? I can’t figure it out.

You need to call DCL to apply the placeholder for your booking. The $250 you paid for the placeholder will go towards your deposit.

Does the 10% discount apply to a cruise booked in the 24 months or is that only for booked cruises while on the current cruise ? Thanks, I can’t seem to figure that part out !

I am not sure what you are asking? The 10% is for any regularly priced cruise fare. The cruise must begin within 24 months of when you booked the placeholder. If your cruise starts on the July 17, 2022 and you book the placeholder on July 21, 2022. You can get the discount on ant cruise that begins by July 21, 2024. It is always a good idea to book your placeholder near the end of your trip. I hope that answers your question 🙂

Re: the Costco transfer: The 30-day countdown begins on THE DAY YOU PURCHASE THE PLACEHOLDER. You need to purchase a cruise AND transfer it to Costco within that window. If you buy the placeholder and then purchase a cruise with it more than a month later, you are SOL.

My wife and I bought a placeholder onboard the Vancouver-Hawaii cruise last April, and then later that summer, used it to buy a Northern Europe cruise for this September. The next day I called Costco to transfer it, and they couldn’t do it because the purchase date of the cruise gets listed as the purchase date of the placeholder!

Yes, you must transfer the placeholder within 30 days of purchasing it.

One placeholder ($250) will give you a 10% discount on up to two rooms on a future cruise? Or is it purchase two placeholders ($500) for use on a 10% discount on two rooms on a future cruise? 1 placeholder=1 discounted room or 1 placeholder=2 discounted rooms? Also, if two placeholders purchased they have to be used on SAME future cruise? I’m reading conflicting answers throughout various posts and not sure what is true/false

You need 1 placeholder for 1 discounted room. If you purchase two placeholders on a cruise they must be used on the same cruise. I hope that helps 🙂

Hi! My husband and I are taking our second Disney cruise in February (we got a placeholder last year). On this cruise, can we get placeholders for two cabins with one being for us and the other for my daughter and her family?

Yes you can. Each cabin can book up to two placeholders to be used on one future cruise.

What Is A Disney Cruise Placeholder? Plus 3 Perks To Placing One

what is a disney cruise line placeholder

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Disney Cruises
  • Types of Travel

A Disney Cruise placeholder is an incentive to book future cruises only available to passengers while they’re on a Disney Cruise.

If sailing with Disney Cruise Line is in your future, you’ll want to be savvy about Disney Cruise placeholders (referred to by Disney as “onboard booking offers”) before setting sail. There are so many fun things to do on Disney ships that, while they’re not a secret, it’s easy to miss booking that cruise placeholder if you don’t know the opportunity exists. This guide to placeholders and the perks (and limitations) of booking one will give you all the information to help you decide whether signing up for this discount is right for you. Spoiler alert: It probably is.

If you’ve enjoyed your time aboard one of Disney Cruise Line’s five ships and can reasonably foresee another cruise within the next 2 years, booking a placeholder makes sense and gives you something to look forward to between vacations.

What’s A Disney Cruise Placeholder?

Pretty much what it sounds like. While you don’t actually book your future cruise while you’re on a Disney Cruise, you pay a deposit that sets you up for a future discount that can be used within the next 24 months. You’ll get an overall 10 percent discount on your cruise when you book it.

The deposit is $250 per stateroom, which will go toward the cost of your future cruise. If you work with a travel planner, you’ll have 30 days to transfer the booking. Disney Cruise Line will send you a confirmation email, so just forward that to your planner/agent if you use one.

Here are some perks of booking a Disney Cruise placeholder.

Smokestack on Disney Magic

1. It’s Super Easy

Here’s how to do it. If you want to take advantage of the cruise placeholder, you can do it on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app (available on Google Play and the App Store ). A couple of taps is all it takes, and the credit card associated with your stateroom will be charged. You’ll be able to see the charge in your folio, along with anything else you might have charged to your stateroom while on board (like alcohol, souvenirs, spa treatments, and so on.)

If you’re tech challenged, you can look for the Future Cruise Desk on board. Disney Cruise Line has gone increasingly digital (one recent unpopular decision was to eliminate the paper Navigator that listed daily activities), and you might have a difficult time finding the Future Cruise Desk manned. We’ve seen the Future Cruise Desk on our last two Disney Cruises (both in 2022) but haven’t seen humans at that desk once. If you want to talk to a live person before booking a cruise placeholder, or just need help, go to guest services.

You can book up to two staterooms (one sail date) per household on board.

Disney Dream at Castaway Cay

2. It Saves You Money

Disney Cruise Line’s prices are at the high end of the cruise pricing spectrum. If you’re looking for discount prices on cruises, Disney isn’t typically going to be where you look. The cruise placeholder discount is one of the few that Disney Cruise Line consistently offers.

Ten percent off your cruise might not seem like a ton, but it’s about as good of a discount as you’re going to get with Disney. The initial deposit also goes toward the cost of your future cruise. You may be required to pay an additional deposit when you actually go to book your cruise, but your cost will be reduced by $250, so the amount may not seem as daunting.

The Disney Fantasy docked at Punta Langosta Pier in San Miguel, Mexico

3. It Mitigates The ‘Sad Trombone’ Of Getting Off The Ship

Cruise time always seems to be at warp speed for me. I look forward to my cruise for what seems like ages, and it’s over all too quickly. Our family is always a little mopey on that last day because we don’t want our good times to come to an end. Booking the cruise placeholder gives you that little treat to look forward to and turns a goodbye into a “See you real soon.”

Ship's concierge lounge on the Disney Dream

Guardrails And Limitations To Be Aware Of

While booking a cruise placeholder is a good deal, there are some limitations passengers need to be aware of before they start pushing buttons in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app.

Don’t wait too long. The link to the placeholder in the app goes away at midnight on the last full day of the cruise, although you can check with guest services if you miss the booking window in the app.

Disney is strict with the dates. The placeholder is good for 24 months, not 24 months and 1 day. Reserve your placeholder as late in the cruise as possible (so as little as possible of your 24-month clock is ticking while you’re still on board), but don’t leave the actual booking until the last minute.

The Disney Cruise placeholder discount cannot be used in conjunction with other discounts. “The onboard booking offer (AKA placeholder) can be a great value to save on a Disney Cruise,” says Disney Cruise Travel Planner Karen Shelton . “Sadly, all concierge staterooms and suites are excluded from the discount.” If you’ve got your heart set on concierge, this discount won’t be any good to you.

The biggest drawback to booking a cruise when you’ve reserved a placeholder is that you must call and book your cruise versus reserving online. Traditionally, travelers have experienced long hold times on opening day (the first day new cruises/routes are available to book), but cruisers have reported ordinary calls to the Disney Cruise Line call center to be extra long in 2022. You can eliminate the wait time by giving the cruise over to a travel agent (they’ll be the ones waiting on hold, not you), but you’ve only got a 30-day window to do that.

What’s The Catch?

There really isn’t one. Booking a placeholder is about as zero risk as it gets. If you don’t book a cruise within the allotted time, your deposit will be returned to you. You’ve got 2 years to find a cruise, book it, and sail, but if that doesn’t happen, you’ll get your full deposit back. Other than having $250 tied up for 2 years, there’s no risk to booking a cruise placeholder, so if you think you’re going to want to be a repeated Disney cruiser within the allotted time, booking that placeholder is probably a smart decision.

Disney Cruise Placeholder – How to Save Money Updated 2024

Sharing is caring!

What is a Disney Cruise Placeholder? It is one of the best ways of saving money on a Disney cruise!

Here we show you how you can use a Disney cruise placeholder booking to save money on your next Disney cruise.

disneycruisesavemoney

Disney Cruise Placeholder – How Will it Save You Money?

A Disney Cruise Placeholder is sometimes known as a Disney Cruise dummy booking.

This way of booking is only available to you when you are actually sailing on a Disney cruise .

There is no other way to book a Placeholder. You have to be onboard a Disney ship. Once you leave the ship it is too late.

If you book onboard a Disney cruise and book specific dates you can also get discounts and perks.

If you know when you are going to sail with Disney cruises again and you know exactly when it is a good idea to book the exact sailing that you want.

disneycruisesecrets

However, if you do not know which dates you want to book a Placeholder Disney cruise booking is something that you really need to think about.

If you book a Disney Cruise Placeholder or book the actual dates you will get a 10% discount on the current rate of the cruise.

This is obviously a big saving that can easily run into hundreds of dollars.

If you book a Placeholder you will get a reference number to prove that you have paid your $250 Placeholder deposit

In the past, you also got an Onboard Credit. You got a $200 OBC if you book 7 nights or more, and $100 OBC for 3 to 6 nights. This OBC was per stateroom.

However, Disney has now taken away that benefit.

You do not get onboard credit anymore.

How Does a Disney Cruise Placeholder Work?

You cannot use a Placeholder for a 1 or 2-night Disney Cruise.

There really aren’t many 2-night Disney cruises so this is unlikely to matter to you.

It is also not valid for Guaranteed stateroom bookings of IGT, OGT, and VGT. Those are the codes for Inside, Outside, and Verandah Guarantee staterooms.

A Guaranteed Stateroom is where you make a booking for a select category of the stateroom.

You do not pick the stateroom.

Disney will allocate you a stateroom in at least that category. And there is a small chance you may get upgraded.

The discount and reduced deposit are not valid for Concierge staterooms either.

disneywonderembarkation

The Placeholder also has the advantage of a reduced deposit on sailings 7 nights and longer.

The snag with a Disney Cruise Placeholder?

It can only be booked when you are onboard a Disney cruise. It is easy though.

You can easily use the Navigator App to make the Placeholder booking.

It used to be that you had to either visit the Future Cruise desk to book or fill out a form and drop it at the desk. However, since sailing restarted the Future Cruise Desk has not been offered.

Right now, due to current changes, the Future Cruise desk is closed. BUT is is very simple to book on the Navigator App when you are onboard.

DisneyWonderBars

Can a Disney Cruise First Timer Book a Placeholder?

This is not a benefit that you can book unless you are on the ship.

Therefore it’s not available unless you are already sailing on your first cruise.

There are other ways that everyone can get discounts on a Disney cruise.

See our guide at How To Save Money on a Disney Cruise for more ideas.

Disney Cruise Placeholder FAQ

The Disney Cruise Placeholder is valid for 2 years from the date that you booked.

So you have a good amount of time to decide on which Disney cruise you would like to sail on next.

disneyshipsandiego

This really is a no-risk way to get a discount on a Disney cruise. Of course, you have to pay a $250 upfront deposit, but if you change your mind within the 2-year window you get all your money back.

There are some block-out dates that cannot be used for the Placeholder 10% discount. You will still get the Onboard Credit and reduced deposit, but you will not get the Disney Cruise discount.

The block-out dates for all Placeholder and Onboard Disney Cruise booking discounts are:

Disney Wish Sailings

4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral – 11/20/2023

4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral – 11/22/2023

3-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral – 12/26/2023

4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral – 12/29/2023

Disney Fantasy Sailings

7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Port Canaveral – 11/18/2023

7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise from Port Canaveral – 12/23/2023

7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Port Canaveral – 12/30/2023

Disney Magic Sailings

7-Night Mexican Riviera Cruise from San Diego – 7/18/2023

5-Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Fort Lauderdale – 12/23/2023

5-Night Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale with 2 stops at Disney Castaway Cay – 12/28/2023

You can still use a Placeholder for these but it is of no value as you forfeit the 10% discount.

You can make two Disney Cruise Placeholder bookings per stateroom.

This is in contrast to booking a specific date onboard a Disney cruise.

Then you can only book one cruise per household.

A Disney Cruise Placeholder cannot be used for Concierge staterooms or Guaranteed Stateroom bookings.

disneycruisecharacter

When you book a Disney Placeholder Cruise you will specify the guests who are on the booking.

However, as long as the person who made the Placeholder booking is in the finally booked stateroom, then you will still keep your discounts and onboard credit.

A Placeholder is not transferable to anyone else. The person who booked the Placeholder has to be on the final booking.

If you want to use a Travel Agent with a Disney Cruise Placeholder then you can request this on your booking when you are onboard.

If you have already used a Travel agent you can request that the same one is linked to your Placeholder.

If you have not specified a Travel Agent you can do so up to 30 days after you have booked your Placeholder.

disneywondercruisesandiego

The Disney Cruise Placeholder is one of the easiest ways to save money on a Disney cruise. You don’t need to decide which cruise you want to book yet. You have a whole 24 months to book and sail.

The savings are considerable and Onboard Credit will help in paying for gratuities, activities, or anything else that you want to purchase onboard your next Disney cruise.

If you are sailing on a Disney cruise and love it you have to book a Placeholder!

Ready? Okay, vamos. Time to have fun!

Disney cruise line placeholder: what is it and why get it, if you are considering a disney cruise line adventure, you might have come across the term "placeholder reservation." but what exactly is it, and why should you consider making one let's delve into the details..

Disney Wish from Snorkeling Lagoon in Castaway Cay

1. What is a Placeholder Reservation?

A Placeholder Reservation is essentially an open-ended reservation made exclusively onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship for a future sailing date within 24 months. It is a way to secure a spot for your next cruise without committing to a specific date or itinerary.

2. How much is a Placeholder Reservation?

To create a Placeholder Reservation, you must place a $250 deposit.

3. Why should I book a Placeholder?

The primary incentive for reserving a placeholder is the 10% discount available on prevailing rates, as quoted on the Disney Cruise Line website, coupled with the advantage of a reduced deposit for sailings lasting 7 nights or more.

4. What if I change my mind?

Yet another compelling reason for securing a placeholder is that if you decide to cancel your placeholder or do not pick a specific sailing date by the end of the 24 months, it is fully refundable! This is game-changing in the cruise industry, as most cruise lines typically do not offer refunds for future voyage deposits if they are not utilized. However, it is essential to note that standard cancellation fees will apply once specific travel dates are chosen.

5. Can I still use my Travel Agent with a Placeholder?

Absolutely! If you wish to use your Travel Agent with your Disney Cruise Placeholder, you can request your reservation to be linked to your current agent as you create the reservation. If you do not have a travel agent, want to change your agent, or did not get the chance to link him/her previously, you have 30 days after you place your reservation to do so. Also, if you prefer utilizing Costco, you can still enlist their services seamlessly alongside your Placeholder Reservation - make sure you do this within 30 days.

Pool deck - you can see funnel vision, part of the Aqua Mouse, the other water slide, pool chairs, and a little bit of a pool

6. What are the restrictions?

When considering Placeholder Reservations, it is important to note that the offer extends to a maximum of two staterooms per household for a single sail date, irrespective of the household's adult count.

Furthermore, this offer applies solely to categories 4 to 11. this means that suites and disney cruise concierge staterooms are excluded from the offer. therefore, to benefit from the placeholder reservation offer, you must opt for an inside, ocean view, or verandah cabin..

Princess and the Frog inspired inside stateroom on the Disney Wish

Furthermore, the cruise must commence within 24 months of booking; otherwise, the reservation will automatically be canceled. For instance, if you placed your reservation on January 22, 2024, you have until January 21, 2026, to commence your new sailing. Failure to do so will result in automatic cancellation of the reservation, and the deposit will be refunded.

This offer cannot be combined with discounts such as florida resident rates, u.s. military rates, or any other special offers. moreover, it does not extend to categories like vgt, ogt, or igt with restrictions (which are guaranteed staterooms). it is also not applicable for 2-night sailings. additionally, it is crucial to note any blackout dates, which are listed below for reference..

7. How to book your Placeholder Reservation?

To secure your placeholder, access the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app while onboard and find the option labeled "10% off a future cruise." Then, indicate whether you wish to place deposits on 1 or 2 staterooms. After that, you will be on a payment page.

Should you prefer to use a different credit card than the original form of payment on file for your deposit, you can easily update your payment information within the app. in case of any difficulties, you can seek assistance from guest services, as the future cruise sales desk has been closed post-covid, and they are available to provide support., when you make a placeholder reservation, you will receive a confirmation email containing your reservation number and other pertinent details. this email serves as proof of your reservation and includes instructions on how to proceed with finalizing your booking at a later time..

What is a disney cruise placeholder.

First off let us start with what exactly is a Disney Cruise placeholder. This is something you can do while you are sailing on your vacation with Disney Cruiseline. It is essentially booking a “dummy cruise” spot to come back on another cruise within 24 months with special discounts and perks. By booking a Disney placeholder cruise you save at 10% off the prevailing rates. By getting a placeholder on sailings of 7-nights or longer you will also get your deposit reduced.

This is helpful since the earlier you book the cheaper the sailing rates are, the rates do go up as the sailing gets closer.

Note : As of September 28, 2019, Disney Cruiseline is no longer giving out up to $200 stateroom credits for Placeholder Cruises.

What Does a Placeholder Cruise Cost?

For each cabin, the placeholder requires a deposit of $250. The plus is that your deposit is fully refundable at any time. So if you have an inkling you would like to sail again I would jump on this special discount.

How to Book a Disney Placeholder Cruise

When onboard your sailing lookout for the Disney Planning location. Here they will have the paperwork you need to fill out to reserve your placeholder cruise. If waiting in line at the planning center doesn’t sound appealing how about booking on your phone? The Disney Cruiseline app has updated to now allow you to book your placeholder right from the app while on the ship.

Remember, the rules are very strict with this discount. It must be done onboard the ship. You can not book a placeholder cruise once you have returned home from your vacation.

Why Book a Disney Cruiseline Placeholder?

The real main advantage of booking this is to save money. Plus there is no drawback to you since the deposit is 100% refundable.

Blockout Dates for Disney Cruise Placeholders in 2020

Of course with all good things comes the exceptions to the rule. There are select sailing through the year to you will not  receive the 10% discount. If you decide to move your existing onboard booking to a blocked out date, you keep the onboard credit but will lose the discount.

Can You Combine the Placeholder Discounts with Other Discounts?

Unfortunately, this deal cannot be stacked with other deals that Disney Cruiseline offers. This includes Florida resident discounts, military rates, inside guarantee, oceanview guarantee, and verandah guarantee. Why a Disney Cruise Placeholder is a Game-Changer

' src=

If you’re like me, you’re always looking for ways to make your next Disney Cruise even more magical.

But what if I told you there’s a game-changing secret that could save you money on future cruises?

Yep, you read that right! It’s called a Disney Cruise Placeholder, and trust me, you’re going to want to know all about it.

This simple yet powerful trick could be your golden ticket to incredible savings and even more Disney magic. So, let’s dive in and discover why a Disney Cruise Placeholder is a must-have for any savvy cruiser!

What is a Disney Cruise placeholder?

The placeholder starts as a piece of paper. Pick one up midship on Deck 4 at the Vacation Planning desk .

It works by telling Disney you want to sail again with them sometime within the next 24 months.

NOTE: You can only submit a placeholder while you are onboard a Disney cruise – not after your cruise ends.

Benefits of submitting a Disney Cruise placeholder

You may be wondering why you want to do this, especially if you are not sure you will be cruising within that timeframe.

There are two main benefits:

  • Reduced Deposit – It only costs $250 per room to reserve (a 7-night cruise). This is less than the standard 20% that it normally costs.
  • Onboard booking discount – You receive a 10% discount off the current price of your chosen stateroom, except Concierge bookings

The onboard booking bonus is a Disney Cruise hack for saving money on your next cruise.

How does the placeholder work?

On it, you fill out your name, email address, stateroom and a couple of questions regarding your current cruise.

One question asks if you want to continue to use your current travel agent. Check yes and your travel agent is sent an email with your placeholder confirmation code.

In addition, many travel agents continue to give you some type of onboard credit, although it is usually reduced (ours is by 50%) compared to the first Disney cruise you booked through them.

Reserve up to 2 rooms, listing the names and birthdates of each person traveling, or simply check the box noting it’s the same people you are currently sharing a stateroom with.

Reserving a cruise now

If you know the exact date you wish to travel for your next cruise, work with a Vacation Planner at the beginning of the cruise. Don’t wait until the end because they are a lot busier with more requests.

Once you have it set up, you are done.

Reserving a placeholder

However, if you are unsure about your next cruise date or if the dates you want to plan are not released yet, simply fill out the card.

If you are using your credit card on file to pay for the deposit, all you have to do is drop the card in the box at the vacation planning desk. However, if you would like to use a different payment method, you need to have a Vacation Planner process the payment for you.

You will get an email confirmation (and your travel agent will too if you noted you wanted to use them) to the address provided.

Travel must start within 24 months of when Disney receives your placeholder card.

Cancel at any time during these 24 months and Disney will refund your deposit. Likewise, if you do not convert your placeholder, your money will be refunded as well.

Therefore, you have nothing to lose by choosing this option.

How to convert your placeholder

If you already talked to a Disney Vacation Planner and picked your next cruise date, you are good to go.

However, if you dropped your card in the box, convert your placeholder by calling Disney Cruise Line at 800-951-3532 or by contacting your travel agent (assuming you checked the box saying you wanted to continue using this agent).

Isn’t that simple for a 10% savings on your next Disney Cruise?

Booking & Reservations – Frequently Asked Questions

My family and I are having a great time on our Disney cruise and we’re thinking about taking another one. Can I book our next cruise on the ship?

Absolutely! You can book a future Disney cruise while currently sailing on board a Disney ship. All you need to do is sign in to your account on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to book a placeholder reservation and pay the deposit. You’ll then have 24 months to select a specific date and sail on your future cruise. Once you’ve decided, contact the Disney Cruise Line Call Center at (800) 951-3532 to convert your placeholder to a booked reservation.

In addition, if you book a future cruise on board the ship, you will be eligible for a special sales offer. Details of this offer can be found during your cruise by scanning the QR code on the “Booking Your Next Cruise” poster located at Guest Services and Disney Vacation Planning.

Disney Cruise Placeholder Offer: How to Book and Save Money

The Disney Cruise Placeholder is a $250 deposit towards a future Disney cruise that you can only make onboard a DCL ship. It gives you a 10% discount off the cruise fare of a future cruise and a reduced deposit on sailings that are 7 nights or more. For the exact information, check this link out https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/guest-services/future-cruise-onboard-offer/ . It's a great way to get another magical Disney Cruise right after this one.

The placeholder is really called the Disney Cruise Line Onboard-Only offer. Many people refer to it as the placeholder because you used to have to book the actual cruise that you wanted while onboard. Calling it a placeholder doesn’t do it justice because it doesn’t hold your place for anything since you're not picking a specific date. Instead it's just an exclusive onboard booking offer.

The discount portion of the onboard-only offer does not apply tto concierge staterooms and cannot be combined with any other offer. However, in 2021 Disney had to cut our cruise short because of Covid and gave us a 25% discount on a future cruise. We were able to combine that with a placeholder and get 35% off a cruise in 2022! But unless something crazy happens, you probably won’t get a combo like that.

The onboard-only offer is available for up to two rooms for one family traveling together. This is regardless of the number of adults. In fact, you'll have to have adults in each room on your future vacation in order to book. We didn’t know this on our last cruise, so we booked two placeholders. I guess we’ll have to go on two cruises.

That’s what a placeholder or onboard-only offer is. 10% off of your next cruise. If you book one and start looking at prices, remember that you’ve already paid $250 as well. So if a cruise costs $5000, you get 10% and $250 off. The cruise will cost $4250.

How does the Disney Cruise placeholder work? Let's take a look.

How Do You Book a Disney Cruise Placeholder?

To book a placeholder or onboard-only offer, you need to be on a Disney Cruise Line ship. I suppose it goes without saying, but you need to be aboard the boat legally as one of the passengers. You can’t sneak on and get the deal. Please don’t try. Nobody wants to be bounced by the mouse.

Once aboard, Disney recommends you use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App to book it. I know from experience you can also talk to guest services in the atrium of your ship in order to book one. You’ll have to use your credit card on file, one you brought with you, or a fat stack of cash (this only works in person. You can’t feed the cash through your phone…yet).

How to Use Your Disney Cruise Line Placeholder

In order to use it, you’ll need the confirmation number. Ours are in an email labeled DCL Onboard Booking Confirmation. When you go to book your cruise, you’ll be able to input that number to get your 10% discount.

Having a travel agency to handle all of this is amazing. Both of my placeholders are registered with my agent. All I have to do is pick a sailing date, and she’ll make the new reservation happen for the right price.

Disney Cruise Placeholder Expiration

In order to reap the benefits of the 10% discount, you need to book a cruise within 24 months of booking the onboard-only discount. But there’s good news. If you don’t end up taking a Disney Cruise within two years, the placeholder automatically cancels, and you’ll be refunded (back to the original form of payment). It would be sad to not go on another trip, but imagine forgetting about it and waking up to $250 you forgot about on your credit card statement.

Other DCL Placeholder tips

Here are few other things you should know about Disney Cruise Line placeholders or onboard-only offers.

Travel Agents

If you use a travel agent, specify that you want the onboard-only offer to be connected to your travel agent. This is easy to do if your agent did the original booking of your cruise, but if not, you’ll need to specify the name of the agent at the time booking.

If you decide later that you want to book your next Disney Cruise through an agent, you’ll need to transfer the placeholder to your agent within 30 days.

Again, use agents. They’re free, and they handle so many tedious details for cruises. Nothing better than an agent reminding you to submit your passport before you miss your deadline.

Multiple Rooms

As a reminder, the placeholder is only good for two rooms. If you need more than that, book more than one placeholder. You don’t have to use them for two separate cruises, you can use both placeholders for the same cruise. I confirmed that at guest services when I booked two. Of course, I didn’t know I could get two rooms with one, so double check when you book.

DCL Placeholder Blackout Dates

Here’s the first downside to the onboard-only offer. There are lots of blackout dates where you will not get the discount if you book a cruise. For the most part, the blackout days correspond with major holidays, Spring Break, and other important sailings like the opening of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point or the maiden voyage of the Adventure.

However, some ships (like the Wish) have more blackout dates than others. For the exact black out dates, I’ll post this link again: https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/guest-services/future-cruise-onboard-offer/ . That link will tell you all the important details.

What Are the Downsides to a DCL Placeholder? (money, concierge)

Whenever a company tries to get you to sign up for something, it’s wise to assume that there’s a catch in the fine print. However, the downsides of signing for a placeholder are limited.

As I mentioned above, the placeholder cannot be combined with other discounts like military or guaranteed staterooms, or the amazing Disney Plus subscriber deal we took advantage of last Spring.

Second, there are blackout dates that keep you from getting the 10% discount, which correspond with the most sought after sailing dates. This means that the dates that are easiest or most fun for your family might be blacked out.

Third, you can’t use the placeholder to book a cruise in category 1-3 staterooms, which are for a concierge room. Of course, if you have the money to book concierge, you probably don’t need a 10% discount—but 10% off of a $20,000 sailing is a lot of money.

Fourth, and this should seem obvious, but you’ll be out $250 per placeholder. The good news is that if you book a cruise, that money is deducted from the total cost. The other good news is that if you decide not to use your placeholder, your money will be refunded.

Final Thoughts and Further Reading

All in all, I think the placeholder, onboard-only offer is the best way to book your next cruise unless you have special discounts by other means. If you’re onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, and you think to yourself, “I’d like to do this again,” then booking a future sailing discount is a no-brainer, especially if you’re planning to take another Disney Cruise anyway. You should definitely take advantage of this offer for your next Disney Cruise Line vacation, so that you can sail again at a later date.

Worst case scenario is that you’re out $250 that you can get back if you don’t use it. And you don’t have to wait 2 years, you can get it back any time. This is yet one more reason why Disney is one of the best cruise lines.

Once you get on your ship, you can ask any cast member for more details.

The Disney Cruise Line Placeholder System is a flexible and convenient way for guests to reserve future cruises while onboard a Disney cruise ship. This system allows you to secure a reservation for a future cruise without having to make all the specific decisions and details right away. With the Placeholder System, you can take advantage of onboard booking benefits and discounts, while giving yourself the flexibility to finalize your cruise at a later time.

Understanding the Disney Cruise Line Placeholder System

What is the placeholder system.

The Disney Cruise Line Placeholder System is a program that allows guests to reserve a future Disney cruise while onboard a Disney cruise ship. It allows you to secure a placeholder reservation without having to select a specific cruise date, ship, or itinerary. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of onboard discounts and benefits, and gives you the flexibility to choose the specific details of your cruise at a later date.

Benefits of the Placeholder System

The Placeholder System offers several benefits for guests. First and foremost, it allows you to secure a future cruise reservation while onboard, taking advantage of exclusive discounts and promotions available only to those booking onboard. Additionally, it provides flexibility, as you have the freedom to modify or transfer your placeholder reservation as needed. The Placeholder System also guarantees that you will have the opportunity to book a cruise in the future, even if you’re unsure of the specific details at the time.

Booking with the Placeholder System

Making an initial reservation.

To make an initial reservation with the Placeholder System, simply visit the Disney Cruise Line desk while onboard a Disney cruise ship. The friendly and knowledgeable crew members will assist you in securing a placeholder reservation. At this stage, you do not need to select a specific cruise date, ship, or itinerary. The important thing is to secure your reservation and take advantage of the onboard benefits.

Paying the Placeholder Deposit

At the time of making the initial reservation, you will be required to pay a deposit known as the Placeholder Deposit. The Placeholder Deposit is a minimal amount that holds your reservation and allows you to take advantage of the onboard benefits. The deposit amount may vary, so it’s important to check with the crew members at the Disney Cruise Line desk for the current Placeholder Deposit amount. Rest assured, this deposit will be applied towards the cost of your future cruise.

Modifying and Transferring Placeholder Reservations

Modifying an existing reservation.

If you need to modify your placeholder reservation, such as changing the cruise date, ship, or itinerary, you have the flexibility to do so. Simply contact Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent and they will assist you in making the necessary changes. Keep in mind that modifying your reservation is subject to availability and any applicable fees or pricing adjustments may apply.

Transferring a Placeholder Reservation

If you are unable to use your placeholder reservation and would like to transfer it to someone else, Disney Cruise Line allows you to do so. You can transfer your placeholder reservation to another guest as long as they are eligible to book a Disney cruise. Contact Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent for further details and assistance in transferring your reservation.

Expiration and Refunds

Understanding placeholder expiration.

Placeholder reservations have an expiration date, and it’s important to be aware of this to ensure you don’t lose the benefits of your reservation. The expiration date can vary, so it’s crucial to check the terms and conditions specific to your reservation. Typically, you have a certain timeframe, usually around 24 months, to book and sail on your future cruise before your placeholder reservation expires.

Refunds and Cancellations

If you decide not to use your placeholder reservation or are unable to book a future cruise within the allotted timeframe, you may be eligible for a refund. However, it’s important to note that cancellation policies and refund eligibility can vary, so it’s best to review the terms and conditions of your reservation or contact Disney Cruise Line directly for specific details regarding refunds and cancellations.

Using a Placeholder for Future Cruises

Applying the placeholder deposit to a future cruise.

When you’re ready to book a specific cruise, you can apply the Placeholder Deposit you paid towards the cost of your future cruise. This deposit will be deducted from the total cruise fare, making it a valuable discount. Be sure to inform the Disney Cruise Line representative or your travel agent about your placeholder reservation when making your booking to ensure the deposit is properly applied.

Booking Onboard with a Placeholder

One of the biggest advantages of the Placeholder System is the ability to book onboard and take advantage of exclusive discounts and promotions. When you’re ready to book your future cruise while onboard, simply visit the Disney Cruise Line desk or contact them via phone or email. The crew members will assist you in finalizing your booking, ensuring you receive all the benefits associated with your placeholder reservation.

Finalizing the Booking

Once you have chosen your specific cruise details, such as the cruise date, ship, and itinerary, it’s time to finalize your booking. Provide all the necessary information and complete the booking process with Disney Cruise Line. Make sure to review all the terms and conditions, including cancellation policies and payment deadlines, so you are well-informed about your reservation.

Combining Placeholder and Regular Reservations

Booking multiple cruises with a placeholder.

If you are a frequent cruiser or have multiple future cruise plans in mind, the Placeholder System allows you to book multiple cruises at once. You can secure multiple placeholder reservations and then choose the specific details for each cruise later. This gives you the flexibility to plan ahead and take advantage of onboard discounts and promotions for all your future cruises.

Managing Multiple Reservations

Managing multiple reservations can be made easier by keeping track of important dates and details. Keep a record of the expiration date, booking deadlines, and payment schedules for each reservation. Additionally, stay in touch with Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent to ensure any modifications or changes required for each reservation are taken care of.

Tips and Tricks for Using the Placeholder System

Planning ahead.

To make the most of the Placeholder System, it’s advisable to plan ahead. Research different cruise itineraries, ships, and dates that interest you, so you have an idea of what you’re looking for when you book your future cruise. This will make the process smoother and ensure you don’t miss out on any limited-time offers or promotions.

Being Flexible with Cruise Selection

While it’s important to have an idea of what you want in a future cruise, it’s also helpful to be flexible when it comes to selecting the specific details. By remaining open to different cruise dates, ships, and itineraries, you will have a higher chance of finding the best deals and availability. This flexibility allows you to take advantage of any flash sales or last-minute discounts that may arise.

Placeholders & Onboard Bookings

Disney cruising onboard booking and placeholder tips.

Is there much worse than having to leave such a magical ship? Many who neglect or simply forget to take advantage of an On-Board Booking or Placeholder typically find their way to the Disney Cruising Group Facebook page soon after debarkation and share their regrets. Don’t be that person – read up!

Do your research at home so that you are ready to choose specific dates and itineraries when you book onboard. If you are unsure of your future sail date, just book a placeholder cruise. The onboard booking agents are very familiar with this process. Also contact your travel agent if you have questions.

Go to the Future Cruise Desk on Deck Four on the first night of your cruise. The line for onboard booking can get long toward the end of the sailing and if you make any changes to your reservation, it is easier to do on the ship. Bring something to read while you wait, or use the drop box to request your booking (more on this below).

Get a written reservation confirmation showing that your deposit has been paid before you disembark. If you use a travel agent, make sure they are listed on the reservation.

Use the drop box for onboard booking forms at the Future Cruise Desk and skip waiting in line.

Onboard booking allows you to book up to 2 staterooms on ONE future sail date. Name changes to the reservation may be made so long as one adult on the original booking remains on the reservation. Even if you intend to sail concierge, use onboard booking. While you don’t receive the discount on concierge level rooms, you do receive the onboard credit. Plus, if you have to downgrade when you return home to a non-concierge category the 10% onboard discount would then apply to your non-concierge category. Your concierge deposit is non-refundable.

Why is this important? Booking on ship comes with more than just beautiful surroundings. The perks are big!

The offer is valid for up to 2 staterooms on one sail date per household on board regardless of the number of adults in the household. This offer is valid for Categories 4 to 11 only. The cruise must commence within 24 months after the Placeholder Reservation was booked or the reservation will automatically cancel.

  • Blockout dates apply; please contact Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent for specific blockout dates. Reservations for future cruises that fall on blockout dates are not eligible for the 10% savings offer.

Below is a look at an older onboard rebooking flyer with the latest fine print showing the block out dates. Currently, this is all handled within the DCL Navigator App while onboard your cruise. The information below is for historical purposes. Jump to the bottom to see the list of block out dates.

Historical Program Offerings

DCL Onboard Booking Promotion FY23

For guests unsure about which future cruise they’d like to book, or you’d like to book a new sail date that has yet to be announced, Disney offers guests the opportunity to purchase a Placeholder, this was commonly referred to as a dummy booking back in the day. A placeholder secures the onboard offer for 24 months, giving you time to decide which itinerary and sail date would be best for you. The placeholder requires a $250 deposit per stateroom and is fully refundable at any time. The offer is valid for up to two staterooms on the same sailing. To book a placeholder complete the following form which you can print from the image below, or pick up a copy form the Disney Vacation Planning location onboard. The only caveat with the placeholder is you must book a new sailing over the phone as Disney Cruise Line’s current website does not allow you to book a new sailing with a placeholder.

DCL Onboard Booking Placeholder Form 2020

When you book a placeholder, keep an eye out for your Castaway Club Thank You mailing from Disney Cruise Line. Not only will it contain a commemorative ship art drawing , it will include a reminder on when you must sail by in order to take advantage of the onboard booking promotion.

DCL Placeholder Reminder Mailer 2019

Effective December 13, 2013, Disney Cruise Line’s onboard rebooking policy was modified to include block out dates . The block out dates are not necessarily exclusive to holidays. The policy at that time stated, for these sailings only, you will  not  receive the 10% discount, but will still receive onboard credit (This is a historical statement as OBC is no longer part of the offer). If you decide to move your existing onboard booking to a blocked out date, you keep the onboard credit, but will lose the discount. For the most accurate list of upcoming block out dates, please visit DCL’s page on the topic .

The terms and conditions of the Disney Cruise Line Onboard Booking Offer allows Guests to make a Placeholder Reservation for a future Disney cruise and enjoy 10% savings off prevailing rates as quoted on disneycruise.com, plus enjoy a reduced deposit on sailings 7-nights and longer. The offer is valid for up to 2 staterooms on one sail date per household on board regardless of the number of adults in the household. This offer is valid for Categories 4 to 11 only. The cruise must commence within 24 months after the Placeholder Reservation was booked or the reservation will automatically cancel.

Effective October 11, 2023, guests and travel agents selecting a sail date for a placeholder reservation will now have the standard 3-day hold period to pay any additional deposit amounts owed.

If the full deposit amount is not met by the due date, the reservation will be canceled, and any onboard offer benefits received when the placeholder reservation was booked will be forfeited. Please note that if a reservation with an onboard offer applied is canceled due to non-payment, the reservation cannot be reinstated.

Previously, guests were required to make a payment for any additional deposit amount at the time of selecting an actual sail date dating back to when the placeholder reservations were first introduced several years ago.

Not sure when your onboard booking benefits expire, check out this page to get a rough idea based on the date you purchased the voucher.

Jill, We have not received the block out dates. Once we receive this information, we will update the website.

' src=

Some of my fellow passengers on the Magic Nov 5 2016 and I were not given the 10% off when moving a placeholder to this trip on opening day, while some of them did get the 10%. Is there any explanation for that? This date is not on the blackout list.

' src=

I’m wondering if the July 9, 2017 cruise on the Magic 12 night British Isles cruise is on the black out list? Thanks

' src=

Is the 2018 DVC member cruise from NYC a blackout for placeholder discount and or OBC?

' src=

Since they aren’t giving OBC anymore, if you choose a blockout sailing you get nothing? or do you get OBC like you would if you picked a concierge room on a non-blockout sailing?

For example, if you have a placeholder then you’d still get the 10% off the cruise fare. OBC was just another perk.

Disney Cruise Onboard Credit is basically free money that you get to spend during the course of your cruise vacation. We explain how it works.

What is Disney Cruise Onboard Credit?

Onboard credit, also known as Shipboard credit, is an amount of money placed on your room’s account for onboard purchases during the current vacation.

There are many ways to get onboard credit and even more ways to spend them.

Ways to Get Disney Cruise Onboard Credit

Once upon a time, Disney used to offer Placeholder discounts of 10% on your next cruise booking, plus $100 onboard credit. Since September 2019, Disney Cruise Line has removed onboard credit as a sales incentive.

This is a good thing. Your Placeholder credit wasn’t stackable with the amazing deals a travel agent could get you. Now you can have your cake and eat it too.

Onboard Credit from Disney Travel Agencies

As a sales incentive, many Disney Authorized Travel Agencies will offer onboard credit when booking with them. Use a Travel Agent That Offers an Onboard Credit

The amount of shipboard credit you receive depends on the total cost of your Disney cruise. In other words, the more you spend, the higher the dollar amount of onboard credit you will likely receive.

We book all of our cruises through a travel agent.  You can read my post about the  pros and cons of using a travel agent here .

Best Disney Travel Agencies for Onboard Credit

While many Travel Agencies are capable of planning an amazing Disney Cruise vacation for your family, Disney only allows the best of the best to be categorized as Earmarked, meaning they have been authenticated by Disney and are Authorized Disney Vacation Planners.

How to book with a Disney Travel Agency and retain your Placeholder discount

Since we just mentioned that you can have both your placeholder discount and Travel Agency incentive, here is how all that works.

When you visit the Rebooking desk, you will be asked if you have a Travel Agent. You either have one that booked your current cruise or perhaps you are still on the fence about which agency is the best to work with. Either way, you are welcome to fill this part out or leave it blank.

At any point in the next 30 days , and Disney is strict about their 30-day policy, you can have your preferred Travel Agent generate a transfer form. Fill this out and the booking “magically” transfers from Disney (or another agency) to your new Travel Agent. The only catch; is your cruise can’t be paid in full. That’s it.

Your Travel Agent will then be able to apply all character experiences and port excursions to your account, as well as arrange for your OnBoard Credit to be applied when you board the ship.

Earning My Ears

It’s been awhile since I’ve used a placeholder. I know for non-blackout cruises there is a 10% discount on the list price but what is the “reduced deposit” amount? I was thinking it used to be 10% instead of 20% down. Somewhere I read that it’s $250 but wasn’t sure if that’s just the $250 I’ve already paid for the placeholder itself. So is the “reduced deposit” $250 off the deposit amount, or really just a $250 total deposit…or something else entirely? (I’d be using this on a 7 night sailing) Thanks

It takes faith, trust & pixie dust.

I just used mine today. The deposit is 10% of the list price and they subtract the $250 for the placeholder from the deposit amount for the amount due at booking or hold period.

Disney Cruise Line revealed the name of its next ship, the Disney Destiny, along with details about ... [+] its design theme, “Heroes and Villains.” The ship, sister to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, will draw on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters and theme park attractions to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage. (Disney)

Disney Cruise Line continues its rapid expansion with the reveal of the third Triton-class ship name and theme. The ship will be called the Disney Destiny, be themed after heroes and villains and is scheduled to be delivered in 2025.

The new ship continues Disney’s commitment to its cruise line , which launched the first Triton class ship, the Disney Wish in 2022 and is getting ready to launch a second, the Disney Treasure in December 2024. The cruise line also bought and is currently renovating a partially built ship to be called the Disney Adventure, which will homeport in Singapore. Disney bought the Adventure for a reported $44 million after Genting Cruise Lines fell into administration.

Disney Cruise Line revealed the name of its next ship, the Disney Destiny, as it reached a new ... [+] construction milestone today with the keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. With the good luck garnered by this maritime tradition, this sister ship to the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure is beginning to take shape. (Omark Reyes, photographer)

About The Disney Destiny

The design theme of Disney Destiny will continue Disney’s legacy of storytelling by drawing inspiration from movies, characters and theme park attractions. According to a press release, “The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny.”

Those who take a cruise on the ship will be able to enjoy spaces, experiences and entertainment themed around stories like The Lion King , Hercules and One Hundred and One Dalmatians .

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

Home ports, cruise routes, cost and onboard activities are not yet known. Like the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, there will be plenty of spaces for kids to play and spaces dedicated for adults to enjoy all around the ship. There will also be three main dining rooms that cruisers will rotate through during a sailing.

Cruising Is Back

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), cruising is back in full force as of 2023. This is good news for Disney, who has three new ships debuting before the end of 2025. The 2023 State of the Cruise Industry CLIA report states that 85% of travelers who have cruised plan to cruise again, which is nine percent higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Disney Cruise Line guests can look forward to a signature island experience that celebrates nature ... [+] and the spirit and culture of The Bahamas at a new Disney port of call, which will be located on the breathtaking island of Eleuthera at a place called Lighthouse Point. (Disney)

Other Disney Cruise Projects

Along with new cruise ships, Disney Cruise Line is getting ready to welcome cruisers to an all-new private island destination in The Bahamas, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. The new island is set to welcome Disney fans for the first time in June 2024. With Lighthouse Point, Disney plans to invest between $250 million and $400 million into the project.

Disney Just Revealed Details About Its Brand-new Cruise Ship — With a Magical New Theme

Disney Destiny will be heroes and villains themed, scheduled for delivery in 2025

Life is full of tough choices, isn’t it? But soon, cruisers won’t have to choose between good and evil as Disney Cruise Line just announced its new ship: Disney Destiny .

Disney shared that the ship design will be themed around legendary Disney heroes and villains, including those of Pixar and Marvel. The vessel will draw “on the legacy of beloved Disney stories, characters, and theme park attractions, to forge a cruise vacation that will empower guests to embrace their own calling aboard every unforgettable voyage.”

Disney Destiny is the third vessel in the liner’s Triton class of ships. It will join the Disney Wish , which debuted in the summer of 2022, and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure .

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line, said in a press release shared with Travel + Leisure . “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

A partnership between Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering, the “teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose when developing the Disney Destiny .” Ship spaces, Broadway-style entertainment, and experiences will be inspired by some of Walt Disney Animation Studios biggest films, including “Hercules,” “The Lion King,” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney unveiled exterior images and a brand-new filigree artwork for the bow of the ship, which is a Disney Cruise Line signature design tradition. The image depicts Minnie Mouse in a commanding, hero-inspired pose while donning her signature bow, along with a cape.

The Disney Destiny is currently being built at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. No announcements have been made on its itinerary or on-sale bookings.

The Best Time To Take A Disney Cruise

I f your family loves Disney, a Disney cruise may be something that is on your mind. Although you won’t be experiencing any attractions or rides, you will enjoy Disney magic while experiencing the world outside of Walt Disney World. Wondering when is the best time to take a Disney cruise? Here is our guide to figuring out the best options for your family.

Disclosure: Over the years we have taken media cruises on the Disney Cruise Line, and have paid full price for many of our sailings. This post contains affiliate links, and if you click through or purchase through one of these links, I may be paid a commission.

When booking a Disney Cruise, I recommend booking with Get Away Today. Plus, when you mention Family Travel Magazine, you get an extra $25 in onboard credits! Give their agents a call at 877-510-2929.

When deciding the best time to take a Disney Cruise, you’ll need to look at a few factors. If you have older kids, you may be stuck with only just a few weeks of availability due to sports, work, and school commitments. My high school kids are so busy that school vacations are really the only times that we can travel for more than a weekend. These times are very fun to travel but are likely to be more expensive – including the airfare.

If your schedule is open, and you are looking for the best times to sail on a Caribbean/Bahamian itinerary, I’d recommend May. The weather is generally nice, it’s not one of the peak times, so prices and crowds aren’t too bad. If you have younger children who aren’t in school yet, definitely take advantage of that time. You also won’t have to worry about hurricane season at that point.

Pricing Considerations for Your Cruise

Pricing is one of the most important factors you should consider. As you’d expect, the peak times of the year, like holidays, spring break, and other school vacations, are when you’ll often see the highest prices. Some discounts, for military and Florida residents, for instance, are not offered on every sailing. Flexibility in booking can give you the opportunity to save some money.

It’s not just the cruise price that you should look at. If you are flying into the port or staying either a night before or a night after your cruise, the flights and hotels may also be more expensive during school vacations and holidays. So you’ll have to weigh whether the extra cost is worth the convenience of traveling during this time.

Some families choose to combine their family cruise with a trip to the theme parks for a Disney land and sea vacation . Again, this is usually a more expensive trip during holidays and school breaks – for both the parks and the cruise line.

When booking, it’s always a good idea to book early. Disney Castaway Club members can often book early when the cruise fares and itineraries are first announced. That way, you have your choice of stateroom categories and won’t be left with the more expensive rooms, especially if you are hoping for a more affordable room category. Interior staterooms and ocean view staterooms (porthole) can be cheaper options for your trip.

If you are already taking a cruise, doing onboard bookings can save you money. Your next cruise can be booked before the end of your cruise. You can book a placeholder if you aren’t sure what itinerary you want to experience next or don’t have your available dates handy. Keep in mind that some of those benefits may have blackout dates during holidays and special events.

You should also look at the price including travel insurance. It’s always a good idea to have your vacation spending protected. Travel insurance may also cover you if you have a medical emergency (but always check coverage) A good travel agent can help you find the best rates for your dates and may even offer onboard credit.

Crowds on Your Cruise

Like prices, crowd levels are often the highest during school vacations and holidays. Although you may only be able to travel during these busy times, it’s important to understand in advance that you’ll need to make your reservations as early as possible and arrive at the airport with plenty of time. On our last cruise, we had to fly on Christmas Day, and the airport was extremely crowded with many delays.

Once your reservation is booked, based on your Castaway Club level, you should also plan your shore excursions early. If you have a port adventure that is especially popular, it likely will book up during the busy sailings. Cabanas at Castaway Cay are especially difficult to book because the demand far exceeds the supply.

Special Events at Sea

Disney Cruise Line offers some special, themed sailings that can be so much fun. These special cruises include Halloween on the High Seas, Disney’s Very Merrytime Cruise , Marvel Day at Sea, Pixar Day at Sea, and Star Wars Day at Sea. During these sailings, you’ll get to experience things like a decorated cruise ship, themed shows, and special events.

Often, these sailings can be more expensive than cruises without a theme. So you’ll need to decide whether or not the special theme is worth it for your family. If you aren’t that excited about the extra decor/entertainment, you may want to save your money and opt for a standard cruise.

Weather/Hurricane Season

Weather is another factor in deciding the best time to take a Disney Cruise. If you are planning a Caribbean/Bahamian itinerary cruise, you’ll want to look at the average temperatures in the islands you’ll be visiting. These cruises are typically offered year-round, although the Bahamian temperatures tend to be cooler in the winter months.

I generally prefer the spring, summer, and fall months when cruising to the Bahamas. Even early December can be nice. Surprisingly, while the summer months are hot, they don’t feel too hot.

The southern Caribbean islands generally have warm temps year-round. It’s definitely important to look at hurricane season, however. A tropical storm or hurricane can affect your sailing so you’ll want to keep this in mind if you decide to cruise in these months. My last September sailing resulted in an extension of two extra days due to a hurricane in Florida.

Itineraries on the Disney Cruise Line

Some of the itineraries on the Disney Cruise Line are only offered at certain times of the year. Alaskan cruises , for example, are only offered during the late spring/summer months because of the cold weather the rest of the year.

Other limited sailings include Northern Europe and San Diego (but can vary by year). So, if you are looking to take one of those sailings, you’ll have limited options for timing.

Ages of Kids on the Disney Cruise Line

Instead of a time of year, you may be wondering what the best ages are to take a Disney Cruise with your kids. You won’t want to go when your kids are too young because they won’t be able to enjoy all of the activities and amenities.

I’d recommend waiting until your kids are old enough to enjoy the kids’ clubs. They are fantastic, and your kids will likely want to stay in the clubs for much of your time at sea. Although the regular youth clubs are open to kids 3 and up, my kids really had fun in them once they were about 5 years old.

After that age, I think that any kid would enjoy sailing on the Disney Cruise Line. We recently went on a trip with our 16 and 18-year-old, and they still have a great time sailing with Disney.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
