A La Tour Is Acquired By Chrysler

A rare painting by the 17thcentury French artist Georges de La Tour has been acquired by Walter Chrysler Jr. for donation to the Chrysler Museum of Art at Norfolk, Va.

Although the museum, in a press release, put the price of the painting at $1.4‐million, it has been learned that the work was actually acquired from a private collector through the trade of several paintings in Mr. Chrysler's possession.

The work, one of the fewer than 40 authenticated La Tours known to exist, depicts the Apostle Philip in half‐length carrying a cross with head bowed. It is one of a series of 12 Apostle paintings done by La Tour for church in Albi, France, around 1616‐25. For some reason, the originals were dispersed presumably in the 18th century, and copies substituted. Only four of the originals have been recovered, of which this is one.

The painting, done in the artist's youth and not considered to be of the caliber of his later works, appeared in a large‐scale La Tour exhibition at the Orangerie in Paris in 1972. The catalogue, listing it as not shown before, ascribed its ownership to “N.C.,” and spoke of the canvas—undoubtedly by La Tour—as “worn, with several accidents and maladroit restorations.”

According to Richard de Koster, a New York dealer who arranged the transaction, however, subsequent X‐ray examination has revealed the underlying paint structure to be sound.

There are fewer than 10 La Tour works in United States collectionus. Last September, the National Gallery of Art in Washington bought a spectacular La Tour, “Repentant Magdalen” from the French dealer Andre Fabius, which also appeared in the Orangerie exhibition. Other prime examples are owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman.

The Chrysler Museum of Art at Norfolk, formerly the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, was established in 1971 when Mr. Chrysler turned over the collection of art works he had housed at the Chrysler Museum in Provincetown, Mass., to the City of Norfolk.

It’s been discussed for a long time, and now it has finally become reality: the Chrysler Building will be getting an observation deck! It’s set to be built on the 61st floor, and it will transform the current northern and southern terraces into an observation deck with a view that overlooks Midtown, the East River and One Vanderbilt Summit.

First impressions of the Chrysler Building observation deck

As you can see from the initial designs, the deck will have glass walls like the Top of the Rock , so it’ll provide a great view of the streets of Midtown Manhattan.

Did you know that the Chrysler Building used to have a speakeasy bar called The Cloud Club on floors 66 to 68?

The Cloud Club opened during the Prohibition era, in 1930, and didn’t close until 1979. Now it’ll serve as inspiration for the design of the platform.

How high is the Chrysler Building observation deck?

Since the plans call for it to be located on the 61st floor, right at the level of the Art Deco eagles, it will be just over 200 feet up.

In addition to this, the 62nd floor will be rebuilt to create an enclosed area, similar to the ones at the Top of the Rock, the Empire State Building , One Vanderbilt Summit and Edge Hudson Yards .

When will the Chrysler Building observation deck open?

As of today, there is no specific timeline. Construction was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2020.

The Chrysler Building in NYC

At 319 meters tall, the Chrysler building is currently the 11th tallest building in New York. It is located in Midtown Manhattan , at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, and it’s just one block from Grand Central Station and three blocks from Bryant Park. When the Chrysler Building opened in 1930, it was the tallest building in the world, before that record was taken by the Empire State Building a year later.

The Chrysler Building is a truly iconic New York City building, and it is impossible to imagine the skyline without it. With its beautiful Art Deco architecture, the famous eagles on the corners of the 61st floor, and its unique spire that lights up at night, it always stands out.

Is there an observation deck in the chrysler building.

Not yet. However, there have been plans to add an observation deck to this iconic building for some time, and construction has now been approved.

Can visitors currently tour the Chrysler Building?

No, the Chrysler Building is not open to visitors. It is an office building that only authorized people are allowed to enter. So we’ll have to be patient until the observation deck opening!

How much will the tickets for the Chrysler Building observation deck cost?

There is no information about this at the moment, but based on experience, the tickets will cost likely between $32 and $40. This corresponds to the ticket prices of the other observation platforms in New York .

Is it worth visiting the Chrysler Building observation deck?

This is difficult to answer: on the one hand, it is definitely very exciting to be able to experience this historic building and beautiful architecture in more detail. On the other hand, right next to the Chrysler Building is the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt observation deck. This deck is much higher and therefore offers a view over more of New York.

LAST GLIMPSE: Brampton Assembly Plant Open House

One last farewell to the modern muscle car chapter....

In a bittersweet moment for Mopar enthusiasts and history aficionados alike, Stellantis recently opened its doors to a select group of visitors for a final tour of the Brampton Assembly Plant , nestled just outside Toronto, Ontario. This momentous occasion allowed attendees to witness the heartbeat of an automotive era as production winds down for the iconic Dodge Challenger (LA) , Dodge Charger (LD) , and Chrysler 300 (LX) models – a trio that has left an indelible mark on the muscle car landscape.

The Brampton Assembly Plant, a sprawling facility spanning 2.95 million square feet across 269 acres, has been the birthplace of automotive legends for decades. Since its inception in 1986 and subsequent acquisition by Chrysler Corporation in 1987, the plant has consistently churned out vehicles that have become synonymous with American muscle and automotive excellence.

Over the years, the plant has seen the birth of an array of remarkable vehicles. The journey for Chrysler Group’s large cars began with the production of LH vehicles, including the Chrysler Concorde, Dodge Intrepid, and Eagle Vision, which rolled off the assembly lines in June 1992. This was followed by a succession of hits, from the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) revolution ignited by the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum in 2004 to the thunderous roar of the Dodge Charger’s introduction in 2005.

The Brampton Assembly Plant has played host to some of the most powerful and groundbreaking vehicles to ever hit the road. Enthusiasts will forever remember the awe-inspiring sight of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 , an embodiment of modern engineering prowess and a respectful nod to the legendary muscle cars of the past. Subsequent iterations, such as the Challenger SRT HELLCAT with its astonishing 707-horsepower supercharged HEMI V8 engine, and the even more formidable Challenger SRT Demon , with its title of the world’s fastest quarter-mile production car, cemented the plant’s status as a cradle of automotive excellence.

As the sun sets on the production of these iconic models, a new chapter awaits the Brampton Assembly Plant . Stellantis, in a visionary move, announced a substantial $3.6 billion CAD investment in the plant, as part of its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. With the transformation set to take place in 2024 and production scheduled to resume in 2025, the Brampton facility will embrace an all-new, flexible architecture designed to accommodate the company’s electrification ambitions. This transformation promises to reinvigorate the plant and propel it into the era of sustainable mobility. However, it has yet to be announced what product will be build at the facility after the L-series cars end production.

The Brampton Assembly Plant Open House provided attendees with a unique opportunity to witness the plant’s inner workings one last time before it embarks on a transformative journey into the future. Visitors were able to explore the very workstations that gave life to the Charger, Challenger, and 300 models – vehicles that have become not just modes of transportation, but symbols of power, performance, and the indomitable spirit of automotive enthusiasts worldwide.

2021 L.A. Auto Show roundup | All the reveals, reviews, pictures

We obsessively covered the show this week, and here's a full rundown.

The L.A. Auto Show took place this week for the first time since the onset of the pandemic. It was a show packed with news and reveals, which hasn't really been the case with other shows we've seen this year, and Autoblog was on the floor covering every minute of it. Well, Riswick and Stocksdale were, anyway. The rest of us were sitting at home in our sweatpants, but hey, we'll take credit anyway. Let's get to it.

Hyundai Seven Concept

This is the  Hyundai  Seven Concept, and it’s meant to act as a preview for an  incoming electric SUV for the Ioniq brand . It leans more toward the concept side of the spectrum than a production car, but expect the final SUV to take design cues from the Seven Concept.

Kia Concept EV9

The Hyundai Seven counterpart isn't the only big, bold electric SUV at L.A. this year. Kia has its own take, and it's a modernized version of the traditional boxy utility vehicle called the Concept EV9 . It also previews one of the next production  electric cars  for the brand, which should look right at home next to things like  the Telluride .

2023 Kia Sportage HEV

As promised, the  2023 Kia Sportage  HEV has been revealed. The hybrid powertrain makes the compact SUV the most powerful version available, and it goes on sale next year. The engine is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder paired with a 44-kW electric motor. Total output is 226 horsepower. The company didn't give a torque number, but it should basically be the same as  the Sorento HEV  that has the same basic powertrain: 258 pound-feet. Those numbers are a healthy step up from the 187 horsepower of the base 2.5-liter engine.

2022 Range Rover

If you noticed how extra smooth and suave the new Range Rover looked during its recent reveal , Autoblog's James Riswick got a design tour that revealed some of the technological secrets to its success. "Less is more" is harder to achieve than it looks.

Fisker Ocean

Fisker has brought the new Ocean EV to the L.A. Auto Show, with a public preview at Manhattan Beach and a presence at the show itself. You can watch the public show reveal above, and see more shots from the show floor below. Fisker says the Ocean will start at $37,499 before incentives. That entry model would be the Sport trim with a single, 275-horsepower motor driving the front wheels and 250 miles of estimated range. It also has a 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds.

2023 Toyota bZ4X

This is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X , due to hit U.S. showrooms next year as Toyota's first all-electric 50-state SUV. No, you're not imagining things. This is the third time Toyota has revealed its new EV; the first was the  prototype , and more recently we saw the  Japanese-market model with its goofy yoke . Plus, we've seen the  Subaru Solterra  a few times, and that's basically the same thing. Today, we're looking at the Toyota variant that will actually be  sold  here, conventional steering wheel and all. 

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Porsche has unveiled the long-awaited (and long-rumored)  718 Cayman  GT4 RS. Powered by the 911 GT3's engine, it's an ode to driving and engineering that was designed explicitly for maximum performance on the track and maximum enjoyment on a twisty road.

2022 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport

The  2022 Porsche Cayman GT4 RS  may already seem like a race car for the road, but the real race car is actually the new  Cayman  GT4 RS Clubsport. Revealed alongside the road car at the  Los Angeles Auto Show , the GT4 RS Clubsport is the homologated racer that anybody can buy and use in SRO racing series without any modifications.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

Just because the  Porsche Taycan  is electric doesn't mean it's not subject to the same usual menu of additional variants that trickle out every year after a new model or generation is introduced. Having already introduced  the base , 4S and  Turbo  versions, plus the off-roadish, wagon-like  Cross Turismo , it was only a matter of time before the next batters in the lineup stepped onto the field: the  2022 Porsche Taycan  GTS and  Taycan  GTS Sport Turismo.

2023 Nissan Ariya

The  path to production  for the  2023 Nissan Ariya  has felt like a long one, but it's well and truly over, as signaled by the fact there's official pricing, and you can now reserve one. Nissan is taking a page from the  Hummer  EV playbook in only offering  a select few combinations to begin with , with additional variations going on sale later. Also, the Nissan Ariya has an especially impressive interior .

2022 Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak

Another year, another round of Hellcat news. You’d think that the folks at Stellantis are running out of names for further variants at this point, but worry not. Debuting at the  2021 L.A. Auto Show , these are the  2022 Dodge Charger  and  Challenger  SRT  Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak models. Everything in that name prior to “Jailbreak” is old news, so let’s learn what Jailbreak means in Dodge speak. The most important element is that it essentially allows you to go nuts from a customization standpoint, unlocking a truly daunting number of potential personalization combinations. From a performance standpoint, it means 10 extra horsepower from the 6.2-liter supercharged V8. Yes, the Jailbreak versions of  the Charger  and Challenger Redeye will each feature 807 horsepower instead of 797 horsepower.

2023 Mazda CX-50

Although Mazda is still keeping plenty of the specifics about  the 2023 CX-50 , its most rugged SUV, under wraps, Mazda engineer Dave Coleman provided plenty of information to give us a much better idea of the size of the vehicle and what it's based on. Generally speaking, it's bigger than  the existing CX-5 , and it's more capable.

2022 Nissan Rogue

This one wasn't a kind-of Los Angeles unveiling, but not really, because Nissan has already updated its new Rogue. Sometimes, the development of cars and their engines do not align, which is why last year's otherwise all-new Rogue  debuted with only a mildly updated version of the last-gen engine. It's also why the 2022 Nissan Rogue , which otherwise carries over unchanged, welcomes an all-new standard engine under its hood. And yes,  standard  engine, not another option. The good news is, it's a good engine, and makes the Rogue even better than before.

2023 Subaru Solterra

Subaru is finally taking its first step into the world of electric cars with the launch of the Solterra . The amped crossover is positioned as the EV that will do everything a petrol Subaru does, including ferry its nature-loving occupants to the great outdoors. As such, it's built with light off-roading in mind, something not many other EVs have addressed.

Mullen Five

Say hello to the Mullen Five. The Southern California-based company Mullen is taking a stab at a luxury electric crossover, and the car’s initial reveal just took place at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Like many EV startups, Mullen is claiming big numbers and a reasonably low price. Whether Mullen will be able to bring this idea into a production car reality is an entirely different story and a question that only time will answer.

Stellantis’ Virtual LA Auto Show: Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram & Alfa Romeo

Stellantis has built a virtual world so that participants can see a variety of vehicle-related options and learn about the company’s commitment to innovation, right from their fingertips.

Users can opt for a guided tour hosted by a virtual brand ambassador who curates information depending on user preferences. The tour gives users a deeper understanding of Stellantis’ products and technologies through a 3D experience, which includes 12 vehicles.

At any point during the experience, guests may opt for a self-guided tour. The user-controlled 3D environment allows viewing from various angles on vehicles, such as the new 2022 Grand Wagoneer and 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia along with the popular 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. Additionally, the viewer may select any of the vehicles for a deep dive into the technology and product applications. An easy-to-use global navigation contains quick links to specific areas.

Stellantis looks forward to providing a hands-on experience for LA Auto Show attendees, but for those who cannot attend in person, this unique virtual tour allows the company to share its newest vehicle offerings and the technology within. The interactive site will remain live after the auto show to help consumers learn more about Stellantis products.

PROTECT THE ART Look as long as you like, but please do not touch the art, lean on walls or pedestals, or run through the galleries.

PHOTOGRAPHY Take pictures of your favorite works, but refrain from using a flash, tripod, or selfie stick. When you get the perfect shot, share it with us on social media @chryslermuseum and use #ChryslerMuseum.

FOOD AND DRINKS Snacks can be enjoyed in Huber Court or our gardens. Food and drinks are not permitted in the galleries.

ASK A GALLERY HOST If you have questions while exploring the Museum, Gallery Hosts throughout the building are dressed in blue and happy to help.

ARTISTS WELCOME Feel free to sketch in our galleries with dry media (pencils, crayons, pastels). Wet media (watercolors, paint, etc.) are allowed with advance permission from the Registration Department. Call 757-965-2030 or email [email protected] to schedule.

ACCESSIBILITY The Museum is wheelchair accessible; complimentary wheelchairs and strollers are available. Kaufman Theater is equipped with an induction loop system for individuals using hearing aids. Large-print labels are available for visitors with low vision. Sensory friendly bags are available at the Welcome Desk. For any other accommodations, please ask a Gallery Host who will do their best to help.

ENTERING THE MUSEUM All bags and parcels larger than 11″ x 15″ will be inspected upon entry. Backpacks are not permitted in the galleries, but feel free to check them at our complimentary lockers or complimentary coat check.

VISITING WITH CHILDREN We are excited to welcome the next generation of museum enthusiasts!  Children can explore the galleries on foot or in a stroller, but please do not carry children on your shoulders. Ask a Gallery Host at the Welcome Desk for children and family activities.
