The Chicks Schedule Long-Awaited Live Return With Summer 2022 North American Tour

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

The trio formerly known as the Dixie Chicks are heading back out on the road this summer for the first time as the Chicks . The country band has scheduled a tour spanning 27 cities in North America in support of their 2020 album Gaslighter , the band’s first in 14 years. Jenny Lewis and Patty Griffin will join for select tour dates.

The Chicks Tour will begin on June 14 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St. Louis, Missouri, and make stops in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, and more. The trek will conclude at the Gorge in George, Washington on Aug. 13. Ticket sales begin on Friday, March 4 via Ticketmaster .

Two years before Gaslighter , the Chicks shared the live album DCX MMXVI Live from their expansive 2018 tour. But it was their 2016 reunion on the road that inspired them to get back in the studio to create the follow-up to 2006’s Taking the Long Way.

“It was putting our toes in the water, seeing who was still out there in fandom,” Emily Strayer told NPR in 2020. “Our demographic was still the same, but had changed as well, so we had mothers bringing daughters, we had all walks of life; it was just really, really a fun tour. I think after that, we’re like, ‘OK, let’s do another album.’”

The Chicks perform in concert onstage.

The Chicks had so much fun on tour in 2022, they’re doing it all over again this summer.

Starting July 21 and running up until Sept. 18, Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire will travel all over North America as part of their 2023 World Tour .

“Thank you to all our fans for making last Summer so fun!” the trio shared over Instagram . “It’s time to get the party going again! We can’t wait to see everyone!”

This time around, the 12-time Grammy winners will play New York venues three times midway through the run.

First, they’ll hit Bethel’s Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on Aug. 3, Saratoga Springs’ Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Aug. 6 and Canandaigua’s Constellation Brands Performing Arts Center on Aug. 11.

Plus, the “Cowboy Take Me Away” singers won’t be going it alone.

On select dates, The Chicks will be bringing along special guests Maren Morris, Ben Harper and Wild Rivers.

Best of all, tickets can be secured as early as today .

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Thursday, Feb. 16, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before they’re officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

The Chicks 2023 tour schedule

Before The Chicks jet-set all over the globe, they’ll headline six nights at Las Vegas’ Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood from May 3 through May 13 .

Once their “Six Nights In Vegas” residency concludes, they’ll perform all over Europe before returning stateside on July 21 for their first U.S. concert as part of the official summer tour at Tulsa, OK’s BOK Center .

From there, the country stars hit big cities like Nashville (July 27), Hershey, PA (Aug. 10), Madison, WI (Aug. 26), Kansas City (Aug. 29) and Vancouver (Sept. 5).

The tour wraps up at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on Sept. 18.

A complete calendar including all U.S. and Canada tour dates, show start times, venues and links to buy tickets can be found here .

The Chicks new music

In 2020, The Chicks dropped “Gaslighter,” their first album made up of new songs since 2006’s “Taking The Long Way.”

Made up of 12 tracks, the empowering record tells the story of Maines’ divorce from her husband, “Heroes” actor Adrian Pasdar.

Rolling Stone said “(‘Gaslighter’) conveys a push toward a calmer sort of freedom” for the group.

If you want to hear the poppy, earnest record, you can listen to “Gaslighter” in its entirety here .

The Chicks set list

Last summer, the group formerly known as The Dixie Chicks stuck to a 22-song set that they played at most gigs with just a bit of variation according to Set List FM .

While we can’t predict what they’ll play this time around, here was what one could expect when they played last year:

01. ) “Sin Wagon” 02.) “Gaslighter” 03.) “Texas Man” 04. ) “Julianna Calm Down”

05.) “The Long Way Around”

06.) “My Best Friend’s Weddings”

07.) “Sleep at Night”

08.) “Travelin’ Soldier” (Bruce Robison cover)

09.) “Wide Open Spaces”

10.) “Tights on My Boat”

11.) “Lubbock or Leave It”

12.) “Cowboy Take Me Away”

13.) “Long Time Gone/Daddy Lessons”

14.) “Landslide” (Fleetwood Mac cover)

15.) “Truth #2” (Patty Griffin cover)

16.) “March March”

17.) “For Her”

18.) “White Trash Wedding”

19.) “Everybody Loves You”

20.) “Young Man”

21.) “Not Ready to Make Nice”

22.) “Goodbye Earl “

The Chicks opening acts

If each show of The Chicks’ tour seem like co-headliner concerts, that may be intentional — the group is bringing some high-profile names along with them this time around.

Here’s what you need to know about each of The Chicks’ special guest opening acts.

Maren Morris headlined all over the U.S. in 2022 as part of her “Humble Quest Tour.” With a Grammy, six albums and a “Sesame Street” appearance under her belt as well, she has quite an impressive resume for an opening act. Want to see if you recognize her voice? Check out “The Middle” which has been streamed over 1.3 billion times on Spotify.

Ben Harper , 53, rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with his backing band The Innocent Criminals. These days, Harper remains active having just released the 11-track record “Bloodline Maintenance” in 2022. For our money though, his greatest song though will always be the jangly “Homeless Child” from his 1997 album “The Will To Live.”

Wild Rivers is a Canadian folk group made up of vocalist Devan Glover, guitarist/vocalist Khalid Yassein and guitarist/synths Andrew Oliver. As of now, Wild Rivers has only released two records — 2016’s self-titled “Wild Rivers” and 2022’s “Sidelines.” If you want a taste of their sound, start with the band’s biggest single “Thinking ‘Bout Love,” which is emblematic of their heartland sound.

Country stars on tour in 2023

The Chicks are headed back on tour this summer in first major outing since 2017

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Twelve-time Grammy winners The Chicks are heading back on tour, their first major outing since 2017 and first shows since releasing their 2020 studio album "Gaslighter."

The multi-platinum female trio behind hits like "Wide Open Spaces" announced on Monday that The Chicks Tour will hit 27 North American cities starting in June and running through August.

"While we were recording the 'Gaslighter' album, I was constantly picturing performing all of those songs on tour," said Martie Maguire, who together with her sister Emily Strayer and Natalie Maines make up The Chicks, in a statement to the AP. "The ultimate payoff is always the live show for us."

The Chicks released "Gaslighter" in 2020, their first studio album in 14 years, but the pandemic derailed plans for a tour. This summer tour will start in St. Louis on June 14, with stops in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Charlotte, two nights in Los Angeles and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.

More Chicks: When changing their name, The Chicks almost called themselves 'MEN,' 'Puss 'n Boots'

"What I have missed the most about touring is the first couple minutes of every show," said Strayer. "The house lights going dark, the roar of the crowd and the opening song pumping through the PA. I think we've all missed being connected through live music!"

Tour openers include Grammy winner singer-songwriter Patty Griffin and indie rocker Jenny Lewis.

"Most of our fans know that we are die hard Patty fans," said Maines in a statement. "The three of us saw her at The Ryman back in 1998 and we haven't left her alone since! She opened for us on our first headlining tour in 2000, and we have covered more of her songs than anybody else."

Tickets go on sale on Friday.

More tours: Il Divo grieves Carlos Marín as they prepare first tour since his death: 'He never will be there again'

The Chicks were formerly known as The Dixie Chicks, but changed their name in June 2020 as the country sought racial justice and awareness.

"We want to meet this moment," read a message posted on the country group's site at the time, signed by all members. The name change was accompanied by a song, "March March," with a video filled with footage of protests through the ages, and listing the names of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and dozens more.

The use of "Dixie" — and its association with the Confederate states — came under scrutiny during that time. The Chicks' former name is a play on “Dixie Chicken,” a song and album by rock group Little Feat.

dixie chicks on tour

The Chicks are hitting the road again. The three-woman country band announced on Monday that they are going on tour this summer for their first major outing since 2017 — which also means it's their first big tour since changing their name from "The Dixie Chicks" in 2020.

Returning to live performance after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a complicated experience for many musicians . The Chicks — consisting of Natalie Maines , Martie Maguire, and Emily Strayer — released their last album, Gaslighter , in 2020, but were unable to tour due to the pandemic. The upcoming tour will hit 27 cities across North America.

"What I have missed the most about touring is the first couple minutes of every show," Strayer told the Associated Press . "The house lights going dark, the roar of the crowd and the opening song pumping through the PA. I think we've all missed being connected through live music!"

Maguire told the AP, "While we were recording the Gaslighter album, I was constantly picturing performing all of those songs on tour."

The tour kicks off June 14 in Maryland and runs through Aug. 13 in Washington state. Find all tour dates at the Chicks' website . Tickets go on sale this Friday.

Dixie Chicks (formed in 1989) are an infamous American country, bluegrass, folk and Texas swing group who have won a soaring 13 Grammy Awards and sold over 30 million records worldwide, hailing from Dallas, Texas, U.S.

Originally comprised of upright bass player Laura Lynch, guitarist Robin Lynn Macy, and multi-instrumentalist sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, the band is named after the Lowell George song “Dixie Chicken”. Following a series of shows around Texas in which the Dixie Chicks found their form, the group inherited $10,000 from the daughter of Senator John Tower to record their debut album. The result was 1990’s “Thank Heavens for Dale Evans”, which while failing to cause a stir, was followed by the Christmas single “‘Home on the Radar Range”.

Unimpressed with the contemporary direction of the band, Robin Lynn Macy left the group in 1992 following the release of their sophomore album “Little Ol’ Cowgirl”. Laura Lynch subsequently took over lead vocal responsibilities for 1993’s “Shouldn’t a Told You That” after which Dixie Chicks signed with Sony Music Entertainment. “Shouldn’t a Told You That” proved to be Lynch’s final release with the band and was subsequently replaced by Natalie Maines. Bringing with her a broader appeal with blues and rock influences, the band’s major label debut was the single “I Can Love You Better”, which peaked within the U.S. Country Singles Chart’s Top 10. Significantly raising their profile to the national level, Dixie Chicks’ third full-length “Wide Open Spaces” sold over 12 million copies, aided by the singles “Where’s Your Trouble”, “You Were Mine”, and “Wide Open Spaces”.

The record won the band the Horizon Award in 1998 as well as their first Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 1999. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Dixie Chick’s subsequent album “Fly” was released in August 1999, marking the group as one of the most successful country acts in U.S. history. The record spawned a whopping nine singles, notably “Sin Wagon” and “Goodbye Earl”, after which the band became involved in a legal dispute with their label Sony.

The result of the dispute awarded the group their own imprint Open Wide Records, through which they released their sixth studio album “Home” in 2002. Noted for its traditional bluegrass and lighter lyrical topics, the record spawned the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 single “Long Time Gone”. The album secure the band three more Grammy Awards for Best Country Album, Album of the Year and Best County Instrumental Performance (“Lil’ Jack Slade”). Dixie Chicks embarked on the Top of the World Tour in support of the record, the first show of which Maines announced her displeasure at the invasion of Iraq, which led the group to be on the receiving end of a huge backlash.

Despite this, their subsequent 2006 album “Taking the Long Way” once again peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Country Albums Chart. Winning five Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Country Album, and Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for their single “Not Ready to Make Nice”, the record was a huge success. The supporting tour, the Accidents & Accusations Tour, was directed more towards the Canadian and international markets due to their newfound unpopularity in America’s south; and didn’t even venture in their home-state of Texas. A hiatus ensued following the tour in which members spent time with their families. Dixie Chicks returned in 2010 to appear on the Eagles’ 2010 Summer Tour after which they appeard in the music documentary “Sounds Like a Revolution”.

Live reviews

The muti-Grammy Award winning trio The Dixie Chicks are country rock legends, and their success both in the US and worldwide is something to be marvelled at, selling out stadiums and achieving diamond-record status for their late-nineties albums 'Wide Open Spaces' and 'Fly'. You may know them best however, from the political anti- Bush controversy that lead singer Natalie Maines sparked at a London concert in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war, stating that she against the war and was 'ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas'. This led to talk-show outcry back home and the Chicks came under a huge conservative backlash, but, over a decade later, are still going strong commercially and won the respect of many fans globally for not being afraid to voice their opinions.

But enough politics, what about the music? If you're a country, bluegrass, or good ol' classic rock fan, the Dixie Chicks give one hell of a good show. At their show several years back at the Royal Albert Hall, London, sisters Martie and Emily Erwin played multiple instruments throughout their set, including fiddle and guitar, and Maines' voice was just as powerful and heartfelt as on record. A real bonus was when legendary, beautiful-voiced singer Emmylou Harris joined the Chicks for 'Godspeed', the song she recorded on their third album. A solidly entertaining night from some of the most talented women in country music today.

This was the first time I got to see the Dixie Chicks and, to be honest, would have preferred a smaller venue but that's the choice.

The MMXVI tour is a BIG show. The band is tight and the Dixie Chicks are in control of the cavernous room from the off. The show's start with blinding lights into Taking The Long Way is a big opener and the pace doesn't let up through the first part of the show which includes top performances of Easy Silence, Favourite Year and Top Of The World and closes with a raucous Goodbye Earl.

After a short break the Chicks return for an acoustic wish set starting with Travelling Soldier, a second time ever Beyonce cover (Daddy Lessons) before the show's highlight - their version of Patty Griffin's Don't Let Me Die In Florida.

After their Bluegrass medley part 3 of the concert began with Ready To Run against a cartoon backdrop of the current crop of US presidential candidates and culminating with a singalong Wide Open Spaces and a banging Sin Wagon.

The Dixie Chicks are called back the bouncing crowd for a poignant and defiant Not Ready To Make Nice and a hopeful Better Way.

Brilliant show despite the venue echo. Anyone wondering about going shouldn't.

The Dixie Chicks are country legends, having won several Grammy Awards for their country tunes. As well as brilliant singers and songwriters, the trio are all talented musicians and this combination makes for a spectacular show, full of diverse talent and wonder. The Dixie Chicks’ success is evident simply by how notorious they are, not only in the country music hub of America, but worldwide. Even in the UK they are well known, evident by how many people turned up to watch the trio perform live. From guitars to fiddles, this trio worked the stage with instruments of increasing ambiguity, wowing the audience with their talent. They performed all their best loved hits, from the famous ‘Ready to Run’ to the much loved ‘Goodbye Earl’. I was so excited when they performed my personal favourite, ‘Travellin’ Soldier’. There is something so quintessentially American and nostalgic about their music that just gets the whole crowd going, proving that country is most certainly not a genre run by men, but that women country singer are every bit as powerful and loved.

Texan trio the Dixie Chicks have proven throughout their career that country music is not a genre owned by men. The female outfit has had phenomenal success in their homeland yet they have also achieved something notoriously difficult for country performers, universal recognition. The Dixie Chicks are a well known name in the UK and following their controversial views on the presidency of George W Bush, they have always been warmly welcomed by the British audiences.

Tonight is no change as fans pack into the venue to hear classic songs along with some tracks from most recent album 'Taking the Long Way'. There are the obvious cheers for 'Ready to Run' and 'Goodbye Earl' yet thanks to the girls charismatic manner and enthusiastic presentation they keep the crowds singing and dancing all evening. The Dixie Chicks have always been known for putting their own magic touch on tracks by other artists and the highlight tonight is their version of the prolific 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac, a real spine tingling moment from some of country's most loved women.

The DC were in top form at Hartford show, almost 2 hours of big hits and a mix of their music genres.

It was good to see them strut their progressive politics -- support for Planned Parenthood and for righting the wrongs of mistaken imprisonment.

Our seats were stage left, facing the too-heavily miked bass drum which overpowered fans and hurt sound quality.

The full screen back drop had mostly good video, esp during a moving Easy Silence. Some videos were confusing or distracting.

A good show on a beautiful night but not sure worth the $350 for tix, parking, and 1 beer.

Love the Chicks. JW

Good concert. They played a varied 2 hour set so you got your moneys worth. o2 an awful venue as usual, with the seats for most people being too far away even with screens helping out. If you need the screens you may as well stay home and watch the DVD.

Prices of food and drinks inside the o2 are scandalous. But once you're inside you can't get out again to the other food outlets, so you are a captive audience waiting to be exploited. This the o2 do very effectively.

Good band performance, terrible venue.

Last night I saw the Dixie Chicks for the first time live in concert, and I am extraordinarily happy to say that I went to a sold out concert to see them. I have been a HUGE fan of the girls since they came out, and it was heartbreaking to hear what they had to go through. Through thick and thin they came out stronger then ever and I can't wait to see what they do next. I am beyond happy to have the Dixie Chicks back so I can see them over and over again live

These chicks DEFINITELY still got it. They are hot, Natalie's voice is perfection. They tried out some new material as well as including a tribute to Prince and playing something off of Beyonce's Lemonade. The crowning point was definitely their performance of Ready to Run with the graphics and confetti themed to mock themselves and the political climate.

What an amazing show! First of all, opening act Anderson East - WOW!! New favourite loving it! 2nd, Molson Amphitheatre-outdoor venue with perfect weather, And 3rd, the Dixie Chicks- what a performance! It was awesome seeing the ladies again, it's been way too long. An excellent spread of new and old favorites, a couple surprises and, as always, superb musicianship. Plenty of eye candy in the stage show, but it didn't overpower the Chicks as they played through about 2 hours of well mixed and well played favorites with one costume change.

The Chicks to play Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on 2023 tour

dixie chicks on tour

The Chicks will return to the "Wide Open Spaces" of Nashville's Bridgestone Arena this summer.

The award-winning country trio — formerly known as The Dixie Chicks — announced a 2023 world tour on Tuesday, which includes a stop at the arena on July 27.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 16 via Ticketmaster.

It will be The Chicks' first concert in Nashville since 2016, though they did appear at last year's Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn.

In 2020, Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire dropped the "Dixie" from their band name and released their first album in 14 years: the Jack Antonoff-produced "Gaslighter."

They'll be joined in Nashville by Canadian indie-pop trio Wild Rivers, who split the opening dates in the U.S. with rocker Ben Harper. Maren Morris will open the tour on its Canadian and European legs.

The Chicks, the groundbreaking country-music trio formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, have a specific requirement for the members of their new, talent-rich touring band.

“We do have a policy,” said violinist and vocalist Martie Maguire. “We have a ‘no a--holes’ policy.”

“No a--holes — and no armpit hair!” added lead singer Natalie Maines, prompting her, Maguire and banjo player and vocalist Emily Strayer to burst into laughter.

“They can have armpit hair,” Strayer, who is Maguire’s sister, quickly clarified. “They just can’t show it!”

By way of illustration, Maines and Strayer simultaneously pointed to their own armpits, which were covered by their clothing. The two then gleefully chorused: “They can’t show it on stage!”

More laughter ensued as The Chicks savored perhaps their first-ever public discourse on the preferred grooming habits for the musicians in their six-piece band. It was a sly reflection of the indomitable spirit that has made them favorites — and personally selected collaborators — of everyone from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift.

Back on the road for the first time in five years to promote their absorbing 2020 album, “Gaslighter,” The Chicks perform July 23 at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre. Their tour continues through Aug. 13, then resumes in late September for three more shows, followed by two October dates at the Austin City Limits Music Festival.

The Dixie Chicks are shown in 1999

Lilith Fair show-stealers

The tour marks a welcome return. Like no group before or since, The Chicks have made country music appealing to a generation or two of new listeners. Those listeners had paid little attention to the genre before the trio soared to stardom with its 1998 album, the suitably titled “Wide Open Spaces.”

The Texas-bred group went on to score six chart-topping singles, win a dozen Grammy Awards, sell more than 33 million albums and often steal the show from the headlining Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow on the 1999 Lilith Fair tour. The Chicks also weathered an intense, soul-sapping national controversy in 2003 — more on that later — only to re-emerge even stronger and more determined.

The trio reflected on their storied career during a June interview via Zoom. Maines spoke from her home in Los Angeles, Maguire from Austin, Texas, and Strayer from San Antonio.

Because they could see and hear one another, in real time, they played off each other throughout the 30-minute conversation. They did so with the same near-telepathic interplay, wit and conviction that characterizes the music they have long made as America’s top-selling female band of all time, in or out of country music.

Depending on the topic, The Chicks responded with candor, introspection or frivolity, if not all three at once. A telling example came when their interviewer read aloud — from a 1999 San Diego Union-Tribune interview — Maguire’s thoughts about feminism.

“We don’t use that word,” she said at the time. “But there’s got to be a ‘90s word for strong women. I feel like the word ‘feminism’ and the women’s movement left a bad taste. And we are very traditional females; we love men and a lot of the traditional female roles. So, I don’t think we’re feminists. ...”

Hearing this 23 years later, Maines laughed heartily while Strayer grinned from ear to ear.

When the laughter subsided, the conclusion of Maguire’s 1999 quote was read aloud: “But we are looking for that perfect word that will sum up the strong, ‘I can do anything’ ‘90s woman.”

The Chicks: Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines.

‘Hey, it’s your quote!’

Before Maguire could respond to her thoughts on feminism from nearly a quarter century ago, loud barking erupted.

“My dogs are going crazy,” Maguire said, “so I’ll let (Maines and Strayer) talk.”

“Hey, it’s your quote!” Maines responded, followed by a burst of laughter from all three Chicks.

“I’m sorry,” Maguire said of her animated canines. “Maybe they’ll quiet down.”

“I would say,” Maines interjected, “Martie has come a long way since that quote!”

The three convulsed again with laughter.

“One thing about getting older,” Strayer said, “is I don’t give a sh-- about what other people think anymore. So, if the word ‘feminism’ (offends someone), I’m not going to let anyone tarnish that word. It’s a beautiful word. I think we would all proudly say we are feminists, but that doesn’t make you a ...”

“I think what I was reacting to back then,” Maguire clarified, “is that I don’t like it when a word becomes polarizing, (because) it kind of hijacks the whole cause. You know, I just watched a documentary about the women who started the first lesbian magazine. And, back then, people were attacking the word ‘lesbian,’ and they were thinking about coming up with another word ...

“Semantics, sometimes generationally or through different eras, kind of hijacks the purpose. I mean, we are feminists. We are strong female advocates, human advocates, for all walks of life. So, that (1999 quote) was probably a snapshot in time when I was feeling a certain way. But nothing inside me has changed.”

Does that perfect word for strong women exist today? And how encouraged, or discouraged, are The Chicks by where we are now as a nation compared to 1999?

“As far as where we’ve come from and where we’re at now, man, it’s reeled backwards in so many ways,” Maines lamented. “(There are) more mass shootings, less women’s rights. So, people are a lot more vocal now and have these platforms to ... band together to say how they feel, whether it’s social media or mass protests.

“And that can be great. But that also can be horrible with how fast misinformation and bad people can join together and create hate. So, yeah, it’s disappointing. I definitely thought we wouldn’t be going backwards.”

At a time marked by such turmoil and division, do The Chicks seek a balance between entertaining concert audiences — which has always been their primary goal — and periodically providing timely commentary?

“Sometimes I feel like, if we say too much, it’s just kind of a cliché... (when) artists are constantly talking at you,” Maguire said.

“We try to pick our moments really carefully. And you don’t always have to attach your band, or your brand, to how you feel and to what motivates you.

“So, we individually do what we do, a lot of stuff, that isn’t a ‘Chicks thing.’ Because sometimes attaching your band to it is a little too obvious. ... But, yes, we definitely feel a responsibility to get involved with things that are important to us.”

“And,” Strayer added, “(while we’re) using the show, first and foremost for entertainment, it’s also an extension of who we are. So, we do touch on things that are important to us collectively.”

The Chicks are shown performing July 2

‘Nobody pushes them around’

The Chicks have been exemplars of independence and tenacity since even before Maines replaced original lead singer Robin Lynn Macy in 1995.

The group’s first three albums, recorded under the Dixie Chicks moniker, were all independently made and released.

When Maines, Maguire and Strayer signed a major label deal with Sony/Monument in 1996, they insisted they play their own instruments on their albums, not Nashville session musicians. The group was also adamant about having equal say with producers at Sony/Monument regarding which songs they used on their albums.

Then, as now, such stipulations were unheard of in Nashville — and in country music in general. Record companies routinely tell new and established country artists alike exactly what to do, and where and how, not vice versa.

But the Chicks were determined to forge their own path. It was an undertaking bolstered by their sterling vocal and instrumental skills, songwriting prowess and unwavering devotion to their craft and creative vision.

Or as Maines’ father, pedal-steel guitar great Lloyd Maines noted of the trio in a 2004 Union-Tribune interview: “Believe me, nobody pushes them around.”

This contention was dramatically underscored by the events of, and after, March 10, 2003. It was that night, during a Dixie Chicks’ concert in London, that Maines publicly expressed her misgivings about then-President George W. Bush and his administration, just eight days before the U.S.-led invasion Iraq.

“Just so you know,” Maines told the London audience, “we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence. And we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”

If not for a concert review published in The Guardian newspaper, Maines’ measured remark might well have been forgotten in that largely pre-social-media era. But when word of her comments made its way back to the U.S., the response was swift and unequivocal.

A good 15 years before “cancel culture” came to prominence, The Chicks were almost canceled, virtually overnight. Their record sales plummeted and their songs were dropped by country-music stations nationwide, including San Diego’s 99.3 XHCR-FM. Record burnings followed.

On March 13, three days after the London concert, Maines issued a contextual statement: “I feel the president is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view.

“We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers’ lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American.”

A week later, Maines issued a mea culpa: “As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.”

Her apology fell on deaf ears, with Bush pointedly noting that people had a right to not buy The Chicks’ records. The trio was pilloried with a vehemence that suggested the group had committed multiple acts of treason. The weapons of mass destruction Iraq was alleged to have — which fueled the U.S. invasion in the first place — were never found.

The trajectory of events irrevocably changed the course of Maines, Maguire and Strayer’s lives. What has been largely forgotten is that on Jan. 26, 2003 — only a month and a half before their London concert — The Chicks triumphantly sang the national anthem at San Diego’s now-defunct Qualcomm Stadium to kick off that year’s Super Bowl.

The Dixie Chicks sing the national anthem

‘It felt very patriotic’

“The NFL likes to switch up who does the anthem by age, gender, race and things like that,” Maines said in a Union-Tribune interview a week before the big game. “So, it took a while for it to be the year for three White girls singing country music! But we believe everything happens at the right time, and this was always a goal of ours.”

What do The Chicks recall now of their anthem performance at a time when they were regarded as America’s sweethearts, not pariahs?

“Well, I just remember that when we did that it was still pretty fresh after 9/11,” Maines replied. “So, I found it very emotional when the (U.S. military) airplanes flew over the stadium, and felt very patriotic. To then be hated by half of the country, a couple of months later, was definitely a weird feeling,

“We just did this extremely patriotic, moving version — our version — of the national anthem. And to (soon) be hated by many was definitely … interesting.”

On May 1, 2003, The Chicks embarked on a sold-out U.S. tour that included a potent, self-affirming concert at SDSU’s Viejas Arena. Their unapologetic and unbowed tone was later reflected in the group’s 2006 song, “Not Ready to Make Nice,” and album, “Taking the Long Way.” Both won Grammys, despite being shunned by country radio.

It would be their last album of new music for 14 years, although the group toured intermittently. Maines released a solo album, “Mother,” that consisted largely of cover versions. Maguire and Strayer put out two arresting albums under the name Court Yard Hounds.

During their hiatus, Maines and Maguire each divorced their respective husbands. Some of the most powerful songs on The Chicks’ 2020 “Gaslighter” album eloquently chronicle the downward spiral of Maines’ marriage.

Now, as in previous decades, The Chicks continue to make their music and pursue their career their way. Doing so, and bucking the often elusive logic of the music industry, has been a key to their success.

“I think people think there is a mold, or a way to success, or a model to succeed,” Maines said. “But I think when you break mold is when you usually succeed in music.”

Maguire agreed and noted that The Chicks are no longer signed to a record label.

“This is the first time in I don’t know how many years that we’ve been free agents,” she said. “(It) definitely feels different to us, not being under the thumb of a label, not that we allowed ourselves to be anyways, But it definitely now feels like we can absolutely do anything. Not that we might not go back to (a label) in the future, but we are free agents.”

For The Chicks’ current summer tour, which was postponed from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have opted for an expanded musical family affair. Their new band includes Maines’ 22-year-old son, Slade Pasdar, on guitar and keyboards, and Maguire’s daughter, Eva, on second violin.

“She’s 18. She’s really excited!” Maguire said, her voice filled with parental pride.

Maines spoke with similar pride about Pasdar, her multi-instrumentalist son. She stressed that he is not The Chicks’ new drummer, despite a recent article to the contrary in a national entertainment weekly.

“People magazine got that wrong, which is hilarious,” Maines, said.

“We laugh at the thought that people who come to the show might think that our drummer (Jimmy Paxson) — who might be older than me — is my son. So, I’m going to introduce (Paxson) as my son!”

The chicks & patty griffin tickets, gorge amphitheatre | quincy, washington.

One of the most prominent country groups of all time, the Chicks, are making their way to Gorge Amphitheatre on Saturday, 13th August 2022! Formerly known as Dixie Chicks, this female powerhouse brings along the legendary folk singer Patty Griffin along for the ride. The 27-date tour comes after a long hiatus – about five years to be exact – and now they are back and coming to the beautiful Gorge Amphitheatre on Saturday, 13th August 2022! Fans better get ready because the Chicks are performing their biggest hits, fan favorites, and tracks from their latest album, Gaslighter. If you’re one of those fans who had been waiting for The Chicks’ comeback, this is your chance to see the 13-time Grammy Awardees perform live at the Gorge Amphitheatre. So get your tickets because they are now available!

The Chicks & Patty Griffin at Gorge Amphitheatre

The Chicks’ 2022 tour comes after the trio took a long break from hitting the road. Before Gaslighter, the band was still going by Dixie Chicks, with their last studio album released in 2006. Between 2006 to 2020, the Chicks released three live albums titled Playlist: The Very Best of Dixie Chicks, Essential Dixie Chicks, and DCX MMXVI Live.

The Chicks started recording their latest album, Gaslighter, in 2018. The album’s theme revolves around ending toxic relationships and finding exhilarating freedom afterward. The album features singles “Gaslighter,” “Julianna Calm Down,” and “March, March.” Gaslighter debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart and received raving reviews from critics.

On their 2022 tour, the Chicks will be joined by Grammy-award-winning singer Patty Griffin. The trio, all Patty Grifin fans, expressed their excitement to have the folk artist on board. “Most of our fans know that we are die-hard Patty fans,” the Chicks’ Natalie Maines added in a statement. “The three of us saw her at The Ryman back in 1998, and we haven’t left her alone since! She opened for us on our first headlining tour in 2000, and we have covered more of her songs than anybody else.”

The Chicks and Patty Griffin are absolutely ready to take over North America this 2022. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness these award-winning ladies perform on stage at the Gorge Amphitheater!

Dixie Chicks ’ return to the concert stage in America has been a profitable one — as the DCX MMXVI Tour is the second-highest grossing country tour this summer, based on numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore.

The trio has racked up $26.6 million in sales at 29 performances from the ongoing trek. Only Kenny Chesney tops the group, with $31.1 million earned from his Spread the Love Tour during the same time period.

The DCX MMXVI Tour is the Chicks’ first tour of the U.S. since 2006 and first of Canada since a brief run in 2013.

Dixie Chicks lead the latest ranking of Hot Tours (see list, below), with $3.9 million in ticket sales from amphitheater performances in four U.S. cities. The group is the first of four country acts that land among the top 10 this week. Keith Urban , Eric Church and Dolly Parton also earn a slot each on the weekly tally.

Of the four venues from the Chicks’ DCX MMXVI Tour included in this recap, Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas is the top grosser with a $1.3 million take on Aug. 5. The sold out performance ranks second, however, among all of the venues that have hosted the band for one night this summer. The highest gross comes from the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in the Chicago market. The 28,000-seat venue hosted the Dixie Chicks on June 5 and logged $4,923 more in sales than the Dallas shed two months later.

So far since its U.S. launch on June 1 (following a European jaunt), the DCX MMXVI Tour has played for more than 400,000 fans at 28 venues. The ongoing tour continues stateside with a steady slate of concerts booked into the fall. The final date is set for Oct. 10, a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Urban follows at No. 2 on the Hot Tours recap with $2.4 million in revenue reported from his Ripcord World Tour that kicked off in North America on June 2. The country star ranks with five performances at three amphitheaters and one arena, drawing 41,884 fans. His two-show stint at the Lake Tahoe (Nevada) Outdoor Arena at Harveys racked up $1.1 million at shows on July 27 and 29 and is the tour’s highest-grossing venue so far.

Church is fifth on this week’s top 10 with $1.1 million from two sellouts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Aug. 9 and 10, and Parton follows at No. 6. The latter’s Pure & Simple Tour logged a $1.1 million take from 12,620 sold seats at arena performances in Evansville, Indiana, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The irresistible dark humor behind The Chicks’ catchy tunes

Praised by feminists and denounced by purists, the Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, are hiding some dark secrets in their upbeat, catchy tunes .

In 2020, the talented, outspoken and formidable trio – who refuse to pander to the public – made a triumphant return with more sassy songs in “Gaslighter,” their first release in almost 14 years.

And despite being canceled years ago, the women are still “Not Ready to Make Nice.” Keep reading to learn more about the brilliant but dark side of this trio!

In 2003, the Dixie Chicks had a seismic drop in popularity after Texas native Natalie Maines fired shots at George W. Bush when she said: “We’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”

The shockwaves were felt from the London stage she stood to people across the world.

Despite apologizing, radio stations banned the Grammy-winning trio from their playlists and Republican pearl-clutchers were outraged.

Then, the women – who received death threats for Maines’ anti-Bush comments – were canceled from mainstream music, but they still had a loyal following of fans who loved them harder than before.

After earning five Grammy Awards for the 2006 album “Taking the Long Way Home,” which includes ‘ Not Ready to Make Nice ‘ – the song responding to criticisms over the 2003 comment – the band fell quiet.

The incident cast a long shadow in the industry.

In her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana , Taylor Swift , a lifelong Chicks fan, said her fear of getting “Dixie Chick-ed” is why she remains tight-lipped about politics.

Triumphant return

Almost 14 years later, the trio dropped Dixie from its name and made its triumphant return with the 2020 album “ Gaslighter .”

The album tells a scathing tale of Maines’ hate-filled divorce from ex-husband Adrian Pasdar, an actor credited with starring roles in the TV series Judging Amy and Heroes . Pasdar also appears in the video to The Chick’s hit song, ‘ Goodbye Earl .’

Filled with hilarious burns, the song, ‘ Tights on My Boat ,’ says: “You can tell the girl who left her tights on my boat that she can have you now…I hope you die peacefully in your sleep/Just kidding, I hope it hurts like you hurt me.”

While Maines admits there were no tights left on a boat, Pasdar did have a boat the Nautalee, named after his ex.

But it’s the title track that shares the dark journey traveled by Maines in her two-year divorce battle with Pasdar.

Maines sings: “We moved to California and we followed your dreams/I believed in the promises you made to me/Swore that night till death do us part/But you lie-lie-lie-lie-lied.” Referring to gaslighting, the song then says: “Tried to say I’m crazy/Babe we know I’m not crazy, that’s you.”

Promoting their newly branded title and album in 2020, Maines and her bandmates, sisters Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, had a conversation with The Washington Post .

Maines said: “You can entertain, and you can know about the world that’s going on around you and have commentary and an opinion on it.” Refusing to conform to the beliefs of big corporations, like the country music industry that earlier canceled her group, she continues, “If a 10-year-old on Instagram can have a voice, it’s definitely our responsibility to have a voice and it’s perfectly fine to use it.”

‘Earl had to die’

Before all this, The Chicks were at the top of their game, inspiring women with the strength of their sisterhood.

Even though some radio stations refused to play the 2000 song about killing an abusive man, the smash hit ‘ Goodbye Earl ‘ is a punchy and irresistibly dark tune that is still an anthem for women fighting against domestic abuse.

The song tells the story of best friends MaryAnn and Wanda, roles in the video played by actors Lauren Holly and Jane Krakowski, and though it’s hilarious, upbeat and catchy, it talks about domestic violence and how the friends decided “that Earl had to die.”

After “Earl walked right through that restraining order and put [Wanda] in intensive care,” the women poison him with black-eyed peas, roll him in some tarp and toss him into the lake. “And it turns out he was a missing person who nobody missed at all.”

Almost 25 years later, as the song hits the ears of newer generations, The Chicks are again being praised for their fierce vocals and lyrics.

One user writes in the comments section of the video shared on YouTube: “The chicks bury him in a chorus of harmony and sass.”

“The murder is totally noncontroversial. Earl was such a huge jerk that everyone is just like ‘you go girl’ and then we all laugh. How lovely that is,’” shares a second fan.

“This song has completely blown up on TikTok. Glad to see a new generation appreciate what an absolute f**king masterpiece this song is,” adds a third.

Another fan shares the multi-generational influence the song has on her family: “My mom’s fav song was ‘ Goodbye Earl .’ She thought it should be played at every wedding. She passed of cancer seven years ago. But this year, my daughter got married and I had a special dedication at the reception from my mom. And you bet your ass all the girls got up and sang and danced to ‘ Goodbye Earl .’”
