Traveling Abroad for Dental Care

A new smile in hungary.

Dental tourism is no exception either, as it is is very expensive, especially on the Western side of Europe, just like in the US, Canada or even in Australia.

Hungary, part of the EU, is located in the middle of the continent and has become a popular destination for dental tourists worldwide. Roughly 80% of medical tourists traveling here seek teeth treatments. Thus in the country medical tourism is more or less equal with dental tourism and it is so significant that about 50% of the overall European foreign patients are directed to Hungary.

How did it all start though?

In the 1970s and 1980s, Austrians from small villages near the Austrian-Hungarian border came to our country because dental care was expensive in Austria and cheap in Hungary. The Austrians were satisfied with the result and delighted by the cheap prices, and as time went by, not only people from the near border villages came to Hungary, but also patients from further away in Austria. As always, the good news spread quickly, satisfied patients all over Austria praised the Hungarian dentists to all their relatives and acquaintances. Soon foreign patients started coming not only from Austria, but also from other Western European countries.

The process was accelerated by the introduction of low-cost economic class flights, and gradually the destinations of foreign patients shifted from the Western part of Hungary to clinics in Budapest. Thanks to the previously mentioned cheap flights, patients are now coming not only from neighboring countries but from all over Western Europe. In fact, a significant number of patients are now flying to Hungary from the US or even Australia to return home with a brand new smile.

The main motivation is the cheaper price combined with high quality

Treatments in Hungary are much cheaper than in the Western part of the continent . How is this possible? In Hungary , despite being a long-standing member of the EU, the average price levels and income levels are much lower than in other EU countries . Consequently, the price of private health services is also lower . Dental cares provided to foreigners are not subject to VAT. As clinics specializing in dental tourism buy large quantities of quality materials from reputable manufacturers, they can obtain significant discounts of up to 40% on purchases from large companies such as Nobel, Starumann or Camlog. This also ensures a lower price for the quality materials used . Thanks to this, on an average day, oral surgeons in a major clinic in Budapest often place 40-60 implants. Of course, this amount of work is done by several dentists in several chairs in one day. The reputation of Hungarian dentists and dental education is very high . In Hungary, around 200 dental students start their training at Semmelweiss University every year with a share of 40% from foreign countries.

How much can you save on dental in Hungary?

In some countries of Western Europe, health insurance or tax regulations provide subsidies for dental care. In France, for example, each treatment has a fixed value, which of some is reimbursed to those with insurance. For the French, because Hungary is also a member of the EU, the same reimbursement is available even if you have your treatment here and not in France. In Ireland, a tax relief of 20% is available for dental care. This applies even if the work was carried out by Hungarian clinics. In the UK, the NHS subsidies only a very limited range of services, and this does not include implant screws, which is the most popular solution for dental tourists.

A broad generalization of dental care in Hungary is that foreigners can save between 30-70% compared to Western European prices . The more complex the treatment one needs, i.e. the more expensive the work, the greater the savings can be made by having it done in Budapest.

Just a side note, that the Hungarian dental costs are considered very pricy for Hungarians due to their lower salary, so these costs are only attractive for foreigners.

What kind of dental treatments do foreigners come to Hungary for?

There are two broad categories of treatment needs.

Some people have healthy teeth but are not satisfied with their smile, the shape and size of their teeth. They typically come to Hungary for aesthetic or cosmetic dental treatments and many of them are looking for a full smile makeover, or a Hollywood Smile . The Hollywood Smile is a solution where the patient is fitted with zirconia or E-max full porcelain crowns or the same type of veneers on all teeth. This solution results in a perfect smile. Minor teeth problems like misalignment, discoloration, and chipped teeth in addition to shape and size problems are hidden behind veneers or crowns.   Unquestionably, very spectacular results can be achieved, with such a smile makeover treatment.

A simpler smile makeover, involving 8 to 12 front teeth, typically visible when smiling or speaking, with zirconia veneers or crowns, is available for between €3,000 and €4,500 . A true Hollywood Smile, where each tooth is fitted with a zirconium veneer or crown, ranges from €8,000 to €10,000 .

Others seek care in Hungary for health reasons, i.e. they have bad teeth or want to replace missing ones . They typically seek tooth replacement with implants, crowns, bridges or the popular All-on-4 solution. The latter means that in the case of a completely edentulous jaw, the dentist places 4 implants in one jaw and a denture or a complete bridge is placed on top. All-on-4 restores about 80-85% of the chewing power and stability of natural teeth for a person with no teeth at all .

Dental implants in Hungary are so competitively priced that UK patients usually travel to Budapest even for one implant based tooth replacement. The price of a full tooth replacement with a single implant ranges from €1,000 to €1,400, depending on whether the patient chooses a mid-range or top-quality implant screw, or a metal-ceramic or zirconium crown . The above mentioned price includes the implant screw, the abutment and crown, which are the components of an implant-based tooth replacement for a single tooth.

An All-on-4 or All-on-6, which provides a full arch implant-based restoration, ranges from €5,000 to €9,000 depending on the type of implant used and the material of the crowns. For All-on-4, the price range is more likely to be somewhere between 5,000 to 7,000EUR .

In the case of a complete bridge fitted on 6 implants, which is known as All-on-6, a bit higher price range should be expected. It is about 7,000 to 9,000EUR in Hungary. If the patient wants zirconium teeth, and bone grafting or sinus lift is also required, the price may slightly increase.

If someone needs a cheaper but implant free solution, they can have metal-ceramic bridges or crowns at an average price of 200EUR/crown/bridge unit . This is the best value-price tooth replacement solution for damaged teeth or minor tooth deficiencies with a gap of one or two teeth, because metal-ceramic is durable and aesthetic, although it is not as aesthetically pleasing as zirconia crowns. However, it is perfect for restoring full bite, chewing and speech abilities. So, if you add the price of the flight and accommodation to the final bill it will still be much less in Hungary than it would be in the UK, France, Ireland, the US or Canada .

Of course, the price paid for the treatment in Budapest is also reduced by the tax and insurance reimbursement, for French and Irish patients. The dentist prices in the Hungarian capital are slightly more expensive than those in the countryside, although Budapest has much more to offer than only the quality dental clinics , in terms of attractions and entertainment, and the airport is only 20 minutes away.

Foreigners tend to visit Budapest’s famous baths, the Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the worldwide-famous Parliament and Opera House. The Hungarian cuisine is also very famous and exceptional, with visitors eager to try the ‘stew’, ‘goulash soup’ and ‘fish soup’.

Getting a quote from Hungary

If you’re wondering how much you could save by fixing your teeth in Hungary, there are several ways to find out.

Clinics specialized in treating foreign patients, will be happy to make you a personalized quote if you can email them a good quality OPG (panoramic x-ray) . If a would-be patient does not have a panoramic x-ray result, it is also possible to have a referral made by a clinic in Budapest, which will have the OPG made abroad at an imaging or scan centre .

Some Hungarian clinics offer consultation in England, Ireland or even Switzerland . In this case, if they have their own clinic abroad, not only a consultation but also an annual check-up can be done there. However, if warranty treatment is required, this is typically carried out in Budapest by clinics that have a facility abroad, given that the work was also done in Budapest. It is good to know that clinics with a foreign office provide service in Budapest at a slightly higher price than clinics with a Hungarian office only.

It is also possible for prospective patients to visit the clinic in Budapest where the treatment will be carried out. For this purpose, clinics provide a consultation package, which usually includes a free consultation in Budapest, panoramic X-ray and airport transfer, although some clinics also pay for a night’s accommodation . It is worth taking the time to visit several clinics in order to get a personal experience of the place and the dentist you are going to see for improving your smile.

In summary, what are the advantages of dental treatment in Hungary?

First and foremost, the very competitive price, which is always combined with good quality . Clinics in Budapest typically state, in their quotation, which implant brands and crown and veneer materials will be used. So for someone studying such a quote it becomes clear that good prices go hand in hand with quality materials . This makes travelling to Hungary extremely attractive. In addition, the treatment plans also include details of the schedule, the number of visits required and their length.

You can start your treatments quickly, there is no real waiting list in Hungary . You may have to wait a week or two to start work, but this is nothing compared to the waiting times of several months in French and English-speaking countries. In Hungary, all cares were available during the COVID period. Foreign patients were also coming for dental work in Hungary, although not as many as before due to difficulties in travelling.

Treatments are quick, usually requiring 2-3 days in Budapest for oral surgery (e.g. implants, bone grafting, sinus lifting). For prosthetic work involving veneers, crowns and bridges, the average time you need to spend in Hungary is 4-8 working days, depending on the number of teeth treated. Most foreign patients come to Budapest because there is so much to see and do that they can easily combine their holiday with smile improvement , meaning that every minute spent abroad will prove to be useful.

Is it really worth it?

Besides the advantages, there are also downsides to consider.

You have to fly to a completely foreign country and use dental services there. This is risky even with the best intentions. It is advisable to research very carefully the  conditions, guarantees and experiences of previous patients . Google reviews can help a lot with that too.

Warranty conditions are always put in writing by the clinics, anyone who has not received one should always ask for one. This is typically part of the quotation. To maintain the guarantee, an annual Budapest check-up is required . For US and Australian patients, some clinics make an exception whereby it is enough for them to send an OPG and a brief summary of the results of the annual check-up by a local doctor and the warranty is still active.

If urgent help is required after treatment in Budapest, local dentists are reluctant to help those patients who fixed their teeth abroad . This is worth noting, as it can take hours of travel within the country to find a local dentist who would be willing to help urgently.

If you have to come back to Hungary for a warranty treatment, the clinics do not cover the cost of accommodation and travel, only the treatment is free of charge .

Generally, for aesthetic and prosthetic works, one trip is enough, but for implant-based restorations, you will need to fly to Budapest at least twice or in some cases even three times .

Still the vast majority of dental tourism patients are satisfied with the results and would do the whole process again if they needed to . And probably this is also a reason why the number of foreigners that come to Hungary for fixing their teeth increases year by year.

Worth the Trip? A Look at Dental Tourism

  • by Elizabeth Newman
  • Jan 20, 2020

This is a Self-Instruction article worth 1 CE credit. The exercise can be purchased and answers submitted at agd.org/self-instruction .

With the constantly rising costs of healthcare, many Americans and Canadians are making difficult decisions about their health, including sometimes forgoing routine preventive care as a way to save money. This includes dental care, which can result in patients requiring even more expensive and complicated emergency care down the road.

One way that many Americans and Canadians are choosing to save money on costly dental treatments is by traveling abroad to have the work done for less. Medical and dental tourism — patients traveling to other countries for cheaper medical or dental care — has occurred throughout history, and today it’s as popular as ever. An entire industry revolves around connecting patients with care in other countries. However, patients should consider several important questions before taking a trip to a foreign country for any kind of dental treatment: Do the cost savings outweigh the risks of entrusting a dentist in another country with their oral health? What research should they perform to find the right dentist? And, for dentists who hear patients expressing interest in dental tourism, what advice can they give to help ensure the best possible outcomes?

Why Seek Treatment Abroad?

Medical and dental tourists travel to other countries for a few reasons. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some may be immigrants who wish to travel back to their home countries for care. Others travel because a certain procedure or treatment is not available in their country. Many others go for specific treatments because the costs are significantly less. The CDC reports that most patients travel to other countries seeking cosmetic/plastic surgery, dental care and heart surgery. 1

How much can patients really save? According to Patients Beyond Borders, a company that researches medical procedures in other countries in order to inform medical tourists, the top 10 destinations for dental tourism among U.S. patients are Mexico, Thailand, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey and the Czech Republic. U.S. patients can expect to save 40%–65% in Mexico, 45%–65% in Costa Rica, and 50%–75% in Thailand. 2 Average costs for several common procedures in each of the top 10 dental tourism destinations are illustrated below.

Average Price of Common Dental Procedures

How is it possible for patients to save so much in these countries? In a country like Mexico, the cost of living is significantly less compared with the United States and Canada, making it much more feasible for dentists to own and operate a practice. In addition, dentists in Mexico are not required to pay for malpractice insurance. Mexican dentists also carry less student loan debt than U.S. dentists due to government subsidies. They repay these subsidies with one year of free service after school. 3

Many patients combine dental care with a vacation. News media is filled with testimonials from patients who saved thousands of dollars by seeking dental care in another country while on vacation. A Washington Post reporter chronicled his experience having five crowns replaced in Costa Rica.

“It would take a few days to make the crowns, so my wife and I took a short flight to the Drake Bay area, where we snorkeled, swam and poked around the mangroves,” wrote the reporter. 4 With airfare, accommodations, food and the dental work he received, his total trip cost around $4,000 — about $1,000 less than his out-of-pocket dental expenses alone would have been in the United States.

U.S. residents living near the U.S.-Mexico border — or those willing to drive there — can save even more by driving to Mexico rather than flying. The vast majority of these dental care seekers travel to one destination — the small town of Los Algodones.

The Allure of “Molar City”

Just on the other side of the Colorado River, about a 30-minute drive from Yuma, Arizona, the small Mexican town of Los Algodones bills itself as “Molar City.” The city only has around 5,000 permanent residents, but thousands of tourists flock to the city every year to take advantage of the approximately 350 dentists in the downtown area. 3 Some clinics even offer transportation to and from airports or other metropolitan areas. 5

Los Algodones’ economy was built around dental tourism. The large number of dental offices there also have access to the many dental labs in town, which means dental work is fast — and cheap. Prices are on average one-third the cost of their U.S. equivalents, and some patients report even lower prices. 3

While many people report successful dental procedures in Los Algodones, some have been not so pleasant. And, if patients return from Mexico and discover the work they received is subpar, they turn to local dentists to help.

Craig Barrows, DDS, is a general dentist practicing in Yuma. He says around 90,000 tourists travel to Yuma and stay during the winter months — many of them Canadian — and that many of these winter visitors also take advantage of Yuma’s proximity to Los Algodones. He’s seen his share of patients who were unhappy with the work they received there, and he says that U.S. patients who travel to Los Algodones get “completely taken advantage of.” He describes a patient who had $25,000 worth of implants placed in Los Algodones and came to him for follow-up care after realizing the implants were infected. None of the implants were guaranteed, significantly impacting the cost savings the patient initially anticipated by going to Mexico.

A Growing Trend

With the increasing popularity of dental tourism over the past 10 years, companies have been created to research and plan trips for medical tourists. Companies like Patients Beyond Borders and Dental Departures connect patients to international healthcare providers through marketing services.

According to its website, Patients Beyond Borders is a resource for patients and healthcare professionals. Founder and CEO Josef Woodman states that he has spent more than a decade “researching and vetting international options for quality, affordable medical care,” which also includes dental care. 2

Potential medical tourists can consult with companies like Patients Beyond Borders to select reputable clinics. Some of the criteria the company uses to vet healthcare sites include:

  • Being accredited by a reliable, globally recognized accreditation organization.
  • Being in good legal standing.
  • Having a website in English.
  • Listing key physicians on its website.
  • Having identifiable services offered to patients. 2

Another factor to consider is insurance. Some insurance companies, including GeoBlue (which is affiliated with Blue Cross Blue Shield), Aetna and Cigna, offer specific medical and dental coverage for people who are traveling outside of the United States. 6–8 Doing so saves insurance companies money because they’re paying out much less than they would for these procedures in the United States. Some employers have even gone a step further and will cover entire medical tourism trips for employees. 9

Barrows’ wife is a public school teacher. He says that Yuma city government workers and other public employees are made aware that their insurance covers medical and dental treatment in Los Algodones — his newest insurance card under his wife’s family policy specifically states that the policy is accepted in Mexico. Barrows says there are cons to this as well, and cites a new patient who presented to his office with pain after having amalgam fillings on almost all of her molars replaced with composite in Mexico. Upon the patient’s request, Barrows replaced all of the fillings to relieve her pain. However, problems arose later because the patient’s insurance had already covered the less expensive fillings placed in Mexico, so the claim for the fillings Barrows replaced was rejected, leaving the patient to pay cash.

Dental Tourism in Europe

Dental tourism is broader than just North America; people in other countries are also traveling for dental care. The practice is also common in Europe. Britons often travel to Hungary, Slovakia and Poland for lower prices. 10 Irish people go to India, the United Arab Emirates, Malta and Turkey. 11 Like Los Algodones, many European countries are publicizing their desire for patients from countries with higher costs of living. Both Poland and Croatia have spent millions developing public relations campaigns promoting their medical tourism. 12 It appears to be working — medical tourism in Europe has been growing 12%–15% annually. 13

U.S. citizens can also take advantage of these European markets. With a valid U.S. passport, patients can visit any country in Europe’s Schengen Area for a duration of up to 90 days without requiring a visa. 14 The Schengen Area includes three of the top 10 global dental tourism countries (Hungary, Spain and the Czech Republic). 15 While in Europe for dental treatment, U.S. dental tourists can also travel to other countries in the Schengen Area as part of a European vacation.

Within the European Union, a number of organizations are working to standardize the quality of dental education and care within the member countries in order to facilitate freedom of movement for healthcare professionals. 16 Currently, the Association for Dental Education in Europe promotes this mission in the education sector, and the Federation of European Dental Competent Authorities and Regulators promotes standardization within the clinical sector. 17,18 These efforts benefit all patients as the consistency of care increases, although U.S. patients should still anticipate regional and national differences in care. 16

Advice and Considerations for Dentists and Their Patients

Dentists may encounter patients who are interested in dental tourism. While they should not immediately discourage the idea, all dentists should insist on one central point: Do your research.

The CDC advises anyone seeking healthcare outside of the United States to do thorough research about medications, infection control and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They should also investigate the standards by which facilities are measured in order to be accredited by organizations such as Joint Commission International, DNV GL International Accreditation for Hospitals and the International Society for Quality in Healthcare. 1 If something goes wrong, patients must also be aware of the options they have to obtain retreatment, manage posttreatment complications or pursue refunds and restitution. Some countries have ministries of health. Others have different forums for complaints.

Patients should stick to the facts and not be enticed by marketing. Mexican dentists, Barrows says, can advertise on their websites that they are U.S.–trained but may have taken only a two-day course in the United States, giving unknowing patients the false impression that these dentists received their dental degrees from U.S. dental schools. Patients may want to request providers’ résumés beforehand so they can evaluate educational backgrounds and experience. Because patients may be unfamiliar with the educational institutions in other countries, they may need to identify the organizations in each country that accredit dental schools in order to ensure they will receive the same level of care abroad.

Dentists also may want to advise patients to work with consultants like Patients Beyond Borders that do some of the legwork of screening providers. Websites such as WhatClinic.com provide client reviews of dentists in other countries. Patients may also want to investigate whether a dentist is a member of an international organized dental body. If patients are interested in esthetic procedures, for example, they may want to look at dentist listings in the International Federation of Esthetic Dentistry or, if visiting a European country, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Many U.S. organizations like the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry also accept international members. 19,20

dental tourism hungary prices

There are many reasons, including price and treatment quality, why people travel to Hungary for dental treatment such as veneers, implants, tooth whitening procedures, and more:

  • Price: Probably the main reason why people get cosmetic dentistry in Hungary is the money they save when compared to private treatment in the US – especially for dental implants and veneers, which can cost thousands of pounds.
  • Training and qualifications:  Dentists in Hungary undergo extensive training and are well-regulated.
  • State-of-the-art equipment: Many clinics in Hungary have invested heavily in the latest technology to make dental treatments as effective, quick, and comfortable as possible.
  • Speed of treatment: Rather than wait months for treatment in their home country, patients may receive dental treatment in Hungary in a matter of days.
  • Excellent facilities: There is a strong emphasis on customer care and making the experience a pleasant one, with some clinics offering spa-like facilities for patients to use during their stay.
  • Sightseeing: If you're traveling overseas, you may as well be somewhere picturesque, and Budapest and many of the surrounding areas have much to offer in terms of sightseeing and recreation.

It's hard to know exactly how many tourists from the US travel abroad each year for medical treatment, but some estimates put the number at 700,000 patients annually .

A significant number of people worldwide are traveling to Hungary for dental treatment. Dental implants and oral surgery are the most common treatments for Americans to have overseas, and Hungarian dentists don't just cater to visitors from the US; many patients travel from nearby countries like France, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy as well.

Patients from Germany and Austria started crossing the border to Hungary for cheaper dental care back in the 1980s. This led to ‘dental towns' such as Mosonmagyaróvár, which has 160 dental surgeries but a population of just 32,000.

As low-cost airlines emerged, patients were able to travel cheaply from further afield, as the video below explains. More dental surgeries were gradually opened in Budapest to offer greater convenience to air travelers.

With so many good reasons to travel to Hungary for dental implants and other work, why not get started finding a quality clinic for dental work in Hungary now?

Education and regulation of Hungarian dentists

There are four dental schools in Hungary, all with programs offering a 5-year educational training to become a dentist.

Hungary's oldest medical school, Semmelweis University, was founded in 1769 and has the country's largest intake of dental students each year. Nestled in the heart of Budapest, it offers dental training in Hungarian, English, and German.

Around 40% of graduates each year are foreigners — a testament to the quality of its education. On completion of training, graduates are awarded a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree.

Dentists who wish to become qualified in a specialist field such as orthodontics, periodontology, or prosthetic dentistry must first complete 36 months of work as an employee at a professional practice. They may then return to university to complete a postgraduate course.

As a member of the EU, all dentists practicing in Hungary must conform to EU standards. In addition, they must register with the Ministry of Health, which grants a certificate to those who can demonstrate a certain standard of operation. To keep this license, a dentist must stay educated on current standards by regularly attending seminars, lectures, etc.

Hungary medical chamber

Many Hungarian dentists are also registered with the Hungarian Medical Chamber (Magyar Orvosi Kamara – MOK). Although voluntary, this accreditation is a sign of prestige which is why so many dentists strive to achieve it by meeting rigorous criteria.

This membership is something to look out for in your search for a dentist in Hungary.

Clinics in Hungary are not subject to continuous monitoring, but it's assumed that a dentist who has reached a certain standard will care about how his or her clinic operates.

The ISO management quality system is mandatory, and clinics should have certifications that patients can check. You can select one that is ISO 9001 accredited if you want that extra peace of mind when having dentistry in Hungary.

There is also a Hungarian Dental Tourism Development program, which is supported by the government and is a collaboration between the tourism industry and dental health professionals. They monitor professional standards and provide economic support for dental clinics.

Visiting Hungary

A lot of Hungary's best dental clinics are clustered in the historic capital, Budapest. Many clinics offer an airport pickup service, so you needn't worry about finding your way in a taxi.

Clinics in locations away from the capital will take a little longer to reach, but again you should have no problem getting assistance with your journey. You may well find that prices are even lower in more remote areas.

Flights take around 9 hours (from New York) and cost upwards of $2,000. A straightforward consultation or treatment can be completed in a single day, leaving lots of time for the rest of your trip. For more complex treatments, such as dental implants, you'll probably need to stay a few nights near the clinic and possibly make several visits.

Some clinics provide their own accommodation, but even if yours doesn't, there are accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. 3-star hotel rooms in Budapest start from around $30  per night .

Castle at night

It's well worth giving yourself time to do some sightseeing too, especially if you're staying in Budapest. Up until 1872, the cities of Buda and Pest, divided by the Danube River, were separate.

Although now united, they each maintain their own individual character, with hilly Buda home to a castle that offers spectacular views over the river and the rest of the city.

A walking tour will give you a taste of the city, but you'll need a few days to explore it at your own pace. Some clinics even provide their own tours and tourism programs which you can fit in around your treatment. Drop into one of the thermal spas, for which Hungary is famous, for a little relaxation pre- or post-treatment.

Hungary dental prices

The following table provides a comparison of dental implant prices in Hungary vs. the US . You can see that, even taking into account accommodation, the cost of dental implants and veneers in Hungary is significantly less than in the US. The more treatment you have, the greater the potential savings.

Of course, prices for veneers and dental implants in Hungary vary from one clinic to the next. These are rough guides only, and you should shop around to find a price and clinic you're happy with.

dental surgery Hungary

Why are Hungary dentists cheaper?

It is, in fact, business overheads that largely determine the cost of treatment. Renting business premises in Budapest is not as expensive as in New York, for example. Things like utilities, salaries, and maintenance are all cheaper as well.

Additionally, prices are kept low thanks to the government's support of dental tourism in Hungary.

These savings quickly add up and mean dentists can offer their services at a comparatively low price. With larger profit margins, they can also invest more in equipment and facilities to improve the experience of their patients.

Many dental clinics in Hungary are kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment and offer a level of care that far outweighs that of many US clinics.

The dental tourism boom itself has also helped to keep prices down and standards up. As more and more dentists open their doors to patients from countries like the US, the UK, France, and Germany, they are constantly competing with one another to offer the best service possible.

Do keep in mind that not all dentists in Hungary will have made this investment in technology, training, and facilities. This means you shouldn't just go for the cheapest treatment you can find. Do your own research by checking online for Hungary dental tourism reviews and asking plenty of questions to ensure your chosen clinic offers the standard of care you need.

Getting dental implants in Hungary

Once you have found a clinic you're happy with, you'll need to have a consultation. This is essential for planning your treatment, calculating the exact cost, and ensuring you're comfortable with everything.

Your clinic may refer you to a dentist in the US for this, or they may conduct a consultation on your first visit. Consultations are often provided free of charge, and some clinics may go as far as to provide free airport transfers and even reimburse the cost of your flights if you go ahead with the proposed treatment.

The duration and number of visits required will depend on the type of implants you have.

Here's a review from a man who traveled from Iceland to Hungary to get dental work done because Icelandic dentistry is getting more and more expensive:

The implant procedure

Traditional implants are fitted in stages. First, the implant itself is inserted into the jaw bone and the gum tissue is stitched back over the site. It takes four to six months for this to settle and fuse with the bone.

At the next visit, the abutment will be installed, and you may be given a temporary crown to cover it. Around two weeks later, it's time to measure your mouth so the implant crown or bridge can be made to fit just right. The manufacturing usually takes a few days.

The complete procedure requires three or four visits spread over several months.

All-on-4 implants or ‘teeth in a day'

All-on-4 implants can be fitted in a single day, making them a popular choice for patients getting teeth implants in Hungary. Since they only require four implants in the lower jaw and 6 in the upper, they also work out cheaper than a full mouth of traditional implants.

Patients may still be advised to stay for a few days so the dentist can monitor progress, but there is no need for multiple trips.

You can read about the dental implant process in much more detail in our complete guide to dental implants .

Finding the right dentist for you

The choice of dentists in Hungary can be a little overwhelming when you first start to consider your options. You can book with clinics directly but there are also plenty of agencies who partner with certain clinics and can organize everything for you.

Some people like the peace of mind that comes with having everything done for them, whereas others prefer to deal with the clinic directly to get a feel for how they work and what their service is like.

It's also a good idea to visit your usual dentist for advice before you commit to any treatment overseas. He or she will be able to identify any underlying oral health problems that may prevent you from having dental implants or other treatment abroad.

Dental treatment plans in Hungary

As you do your research to find the best dentist in Hungary for your needs, here are some questions to ask to ensure you have all bases covered:

  • How do they provide their consultations?
  • At what point will you be given a fixed price for your treatment?
  • What is included in the cost, and what will you need to pay extra for?
  • Are you happy with the level of English they speak?
  • How are they accredited?
  • What care will they provide while you are recovering?
  • What aftercare will you need to arrange when you get back home?
  • Do they provide any insurance and/or guarantees?
  • What happens if you experience complications after returning home?
  • Verify access to a specialist in the care you need

Hungary's Visegrad Castle

Hungary: Affordable Dentistry, Premium Clinics

Hungary borders seven other countries in Eastern Europe, rivaled only by China and Russia in this regard, which border fourteen countries each. Hungarian Goulash is what comes to mind when most Westerners hear the country mentioned; however, neither the number of border stations nor the spicy stew are what this beautiful, peaceful country are best known for.

A tourist traveling around this part of Europe might become confused by the national emblem of Hungary; because it looks like Hungary won a game of Capture the Flag with Italy and then proceeded to turn it on its head. It’s a fine-looking flag, nonetheless, with its bold, broad red, white, and green horizontal stripes. Plus, if any of the culinary secrets are shared between the two countries, it would certainly please the likes of Anthony Bourdain. The cooking in Hungary is very hearty, centering primarily on meats, seasonal vegetables, fruits, fresh bread, dairy products and cheese. It has some Asiatic and other exotic influences; however, it typically remains within the realm of Western European.

hungary

The geography and climate of Hungary are pleasant. A river runs through it, as the beautiful Danube winds its way across the country on its way to the ocean. The climate is classified as oceanic, with a normal seasonal shift from reasonably hot summers to snowy but not bitterly cold winters. For most expatriates and tourists, it may just remind them of home. Precipitation is moderate and steady throughout the year. For those who prefer warm rays, the sunny days can be rather limited. This does not dampen the spirit of the locals, however, who remain upbeat and friendly. At night, the ample lighting all around the magnificent architecture helps to brighten the mood dramatically. For anyone seeking a quick pick-me-up, the thermal spas offer a relaxing getaway any day.

With a dynamic economy and democratic government, Hungary is a rapidly growing country. Its infrastructure is state of the art, and rail travel is a big part of its expanding transportation system. All of Hungary is readily accessible by all modes of transportation, including two international airports: One in Budapest, and one in Debrecen. Driving from any of the seven neighboring countries is a viable option as well.

In fact, half of all Austrians travel to Hungary to have their dental work done; owing to the fact that some clinics are as little as forty minutes away from Vienna. Dental care in Hungary is considered to be some of the best in the European Union, if not the world. The number of Germans, Swiss, and British dental tourists visiting each year has climbed into the tens of thousands. It is hard to argue with numbers like these when evaluating the quality of care here; owing to the fact that discriminating consumers always vote with their feet.

Clinics specialize in all dental replacement procedures, including crowns, bridges, and implants, supported by the most modern dental laboratory products available. Of particular note is the preparation of zirconium crowns prepared and installed for as low as 280 Euros. With prices like that, one might consider that the cost difference for an entire treatment plan here could pay for the vacation.

Who knows, you might even pick up some of the local Magyar language, considered to be equal only to Finnish in difficulty. You can relax knowing that most professional care providers here speak English well enough to communicate your treatment needs. So, enjoy your time in this heart of Old Europe, before you head back home with the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Hungary: Everyone’s Talking About It!

Thousands of people undergo  cosmetic dentistry in Hungary  every month: it’s cheap, it’s fast, Hungarian dentists are world-class, their equipment is modern, and you’ll be in the heart of Old Europe during your treatment.

hungary dental tourism reddit

Budapest is one of Europe’s most attractive cities, a health center for centuries

Each year, more than  a million “dental tourists”  cross Hungary’s borders to get their teeth done, most of them from neighboring Austria. Many more come from across Europe, especially the United Kingdom, and from as far as the US or Canada.

Dental tourism in Hungary  is so popular among foreigners that some European agencies even specialize in full packages including travel, hotels and dental treatment, all handled by a single agency.

Hungary already had a strong reputation as a Dental Implants center, and this was reinforced after the fall of the Berlin Wall with the upgrading and modernizing of the country’s dental facilities. Clinics that cater to foreigners are undeniably modern, using such equipment and procedures as computer-controlled dental chairs or plasma or laser tooth whitening . For a  dental implant, Hungary  will have prices up to half those of Western Europe.

With Hungary’s accession to the European Union in 2004, Hungarian dentists are now also subjected to European legislation, especially for health norms and consumer legislation, so this makes cosmetic dentistry in Hungary as reliable and safe as anywhere else on the continent.

hungary dental tourism reddit

Castle of Mosonmagyaróvár, a spa town with many dental clinics

Dentists in Hungary  are highly qualified and its universities train students from around the world. After receiving their degree (taught in German and English as well as Hungarian) most dentists top up their training in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK or the US. As a result many speak absolutely fluent English.

Hungarian dentists, unlike those in many countries, are actively encouraged to stay abreast of new developments. To maintain their accreditation, dentists must accumulate a certain number of points each year, which they build up by attending seminars, workshops or undergoing additional training.

Dental tourism in Hungary has received plenty of media coverage , including feature stories in such reputable news outlets as The Telegraph in London, the New York Times, USA Today and the BBC.

Cosmetic dentistry: Hungary spoils you for choice

Dental clinics are located all over the country, although there are higher concentrations in certain areas.

There are plenty of  dentists in Budapest , Hungary’s capital, which some consider Central Europe’s most beautiful historical city.

Not surprisingly,  clutches of dental clinics lie near the Austrian border , both around Mosonmagyaróvár (a thermal spa town whose waters are among Europe’s best) and Sopron, which lies in one of the country’s premier tourist areas.

Is cosmetic dentistry in Hungary for you?

That depends.

Are you someone who…

  • Would rather spend your money on something other than expensive dental work?
  • Doesn’t mind traveling to another country and relaxing for a few days enjoying the sights?
  • Who desperately needs to work on your teeth but simply can’t afford the thousands of dollars or pounds you’re being quoted at home?
  • Wants a brighter smile but cringes at the thought of spending so much on something that isn’t life-threatening?
  • Doesn’t want to waste time on a waiting list while your dental problem just gets worse?

When it comes to  dentistry Hungary takes it seriously : it’s big business for the country’s economy, with estimates of its contribution ranging from US$ 200 million a year to one billion.

Given its popularity  cosmetic dentistry in Hungary  has understandably bred some scams along the way, with a number of less reputable cosmetic dentists beginning to make an appearance.

So use your good judgment, as you would with any health care. Ask all the right questions, and do your research as thoroughly as you can.

Hungarian dental education

You’re in good hands!

Dentists in Hungary are among the best-trained in the world, and they’ve got some serious credentials to prove it.

Hungary’s oldest dental school, the Faculty of Dentistry at Semmelweis University in Budapest, is a great place to study. With its offered degrees, including those in English and German, it’s accessible to non-Hungarian speakers. Almost half of its dental graduates each year are foreigners – a testament to the quality of its education.

On completion of training, graduates are awarded a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree.

Dentists who wish to become qualified in a specialist field such as orthodontics, periodontology or prosthetic dentistry must first complete 36 months of work as an employee at a professional practice. They may then return to university to complete a postgraduate course.

Hungarian dentistry regulation

Hungary dentists are regulated by the Ministry of Health. If you want to make sure that your dentist is working within acceptable standards, then look for one who is registered with the Hungarian Medical Chamber (Magyar Orvosi Kamara – MOK). Although voluntary, this membership ensures that your dentist is dedicated to providing safe and effective care.

All of the dentists and clinics we work with are TEMOS and ISO9001 accredited so you can have that extra peace of mind when having dental work in Hungary.

What is Dental Tourism

In this article

What is Dental Tourism?

Dental tourism refers to traveling abroad to get dental treatment. Many people have left, or plan to leave, their country of residence for a “dental vacation.” They may seek higher-quality care, a more attractive price, or both.

Defining the Phenomenon

Visiting another country for dental care is an increasingly common form of medical tourism. Medical tourism, including dental tourism, can be divided into three basic categories:

  • Going from a less developed country to a more developed country to access a higher standard of care — This is more common, as some procedures used to be available only in certain parts of the world.
  • Going from a developed country to a country where equivalent dental care is less expensive — This trend is rising as many countries offer more advanced medical treatment.
  • People living abroad who return home for dental care — This is also increasingly common due to global migration.

This article focuses on the second type of dental tourism. For well-established dental treatments such as dental implants, going to a less expensive country is an attractive option for many people.

Benefits and Risks of Dental Tourism

As dental tourism becomes an increasingly compelling option for many people, it’s worth considering the benefits and potential risks. While the advantages of traveling for dental care may seem obvious, the drawbacks may not be as obvious.

Advantages of Seeking Dental Treatment Abroad

There are several potential advantages to dental tourism as an alternative to treatment at home, including:

  • Cost-effectiveness — Dental tourist destinations may offer the same quality of care at home but at a fraction of the price. Many clinics cater specifically to foreigners and cultivate a reputation for affordability and expertise.
  • The travel experience — Besides getting affordable dental care, tourism’s usual benefits include seeing new places, meeting new people, and having experiences that wouldn’t be possible at home.
  • High-quality procedures — Travel may be necessary to access the treatment you seek. This depends on your country of origin, as some countries still have an advantage over others regarding the most advanced procedures.

Concerns and Potential Pitfalls

There are also some potential disadvantages to traveling abroad for dental treatment. These include:

  • Risk of low-quality care — The price these dental offices offer may be attractive, but there’s a risk of providing poor care and/ or using low-quality materials
  • Little to no recourse — If you receive low-quality treatment in a foreign country, you may not have any legal or financial recourse as a non-citizen
  • Long travel times — Air travel may impact recovery, increasing the risk of complications such as post-operative bleeding
  • Leisure versus recovery — Drinking, dancing, or eating certain foods may compromise the results of your treatment
  • Local diseases — Contracting a disease you aren’t immune to is another potential pitfall that could harm your ability to recover

Which Countries are Best for Dental Tourism?

Some of the most popular destinations for dental tourism include:

  • Costa Rica — Offers state-of-the-art dental care at about a third of the cost of the US; many doctors, like those at Cavallini International Dental Clinic , have trained at US or Europe dental schools
  • Mexico — Has many quality dental offices that treat Americans and other foreigners; the border city of Los Algodones, nicknamed “Molar City,” is home to hundreds of dentists
  • Thailand — An increasingly popular dental tourism destination for Australians and New Zealanders; they can save half or more on dental work at offices like Bangkok International Dental Center
  • Hungary — The top destination for Brits, Germans, and other Europeans seeking dental care abroad; clinics like Medicover in Budapest offer dental implants and other procedures at half or even a quarter of the cost at home

Other increasingly popular countries for foreigners seeking dental care include Spain, Poland, Romania, the Dominican Republic, Turkey, and the Philippines.

The best country for you to visit will depend on your preferences, current location, available funds, and any cultural association you might have with the country in question. You should choose a reputable dentist with a proven track record wherever you decide to go.

Why is Dental Tourism Thriving?

The trend of people visiting dental clinics abroad (that cater to foreigners) has grown significantly during this century.

This type of dental tourism is on the rise for several reasons:

  • A good deal for the patient — Many people from countries like the United States are affluent by global standards but find it difficult to afford certain dental procedures at home. This makes them ideal customers for high-quality dental clinics in less affluent countries.
  • A good deal for the dentist — The clinic can charge a price higher than average within their country but still favorable for the foreign patient.
  • An opportunity for travel — Dental tourists can enjoy the other perks of vacationing abroad. They can bring family and friends, visit attractions, etc.
  • Favorable location — The above benefits can be found in nearby countries for dental tourists. North American dental tourists can go to Latin American countries, Australians can go to Thailand, and Germans and Austrians can go to Hungary or Romania.

Cost of Dental Tourism

The total cost of a dental vacation takes into account the cost of treatment, travel, and accommodation. Keep this in mind and weigh these factors against potential risks.

Other costs you’ll want to take into account may include:

  • Travel expenses — Getting to your destination country and back, plus what you’ll need to get around once you’ve arrived (taxi and bus fares, etc.)
  • Accommodations — The cost of a hotel, hostel, Airbnb, or on-site guest house
  • Food and leisure — Enough to live day-to-day while abroad, plus any excursions you want to take, souvenirs you plan to buy, etc.

It’s possible that when everything is accounted for, the total cost of your trip will still be significantly less expensive than getting treatment at home. This is the bargain dental tourists are typically hoping to achieve.

On the other hand, the total cost may be more expensive than just getting treatment at home. You should rethink your plans or decide if the trip is still worth the expense.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Tourism?

Dental insurance may cover out-of-country treatment. Many travel insurance policies also cover dental treatment (however, this is typically only for emergencies).

If you’re living or working abroad long-term, you may want to consider an international health insurance policy with a global network of care providers. Dental coverage can often be included in this kind of policy.

If you have dental insurance, do the following to ensure you’re covered before traveling:

  • Check with your insurer
  • Find out any requirements your insurer places on out-of-country treatment (it may be handled differently than treatment at home)
  • Make sure your dental clinic files any necessary documentation
  • Be ready to pay out of pocket at the clinic (your insurance may require this, reimbursing you after the fact)

Even without insurance, dental tourism may get you a better deal than getting treatment at home. But only you can determine this.

Thoroughly research your options, and consider getting dental insurance (and travel insurance) if you don’t already have it. Remember that there may be a waiting period between starting your policy and getting full coverage.

Tips for a Safe Dental Tourism Experience

You’ll need to plan beforehand to ensure a safe and successful trip. Before committing to going abroad as a dental tourist, here are some steps you’ll want to take:

Research Thoroughly

Do your research to ensure quality treatment with a reputable dentist. Before traveling, you’ll want to:

  • Choose a dentist — Pick a dental clinic with verified experience with foreign patients, using their website and any available reviews to vet them and make an informed decision.
  • Make a plan — Contact your clinic of choice to establish a treatment plan and schedule and settle any logistical or financial questions.
  • Know where you’ll be staying — Know how close your hotel, hostel, or Airbnb will be to the dental office, and plan for transportation back and forth. Some clinics that cater to foreign patients offer on-site guest rooms.

Before embarking on your trip, you should eliminate as many uncertainties as possible about the reputation of your dentist and the quality of treatment you can expect.

Consider Your Treatment

The specific dental procedure you’re getting may dictate your travel schedule. Be ready to plan multiple trips or a longer stay if necessary.

For example, many people going abroad for dental care seek dental implants. Implant surgery generally requires at least two visits:

  • One to place the implants and temporary crowns
  • A second visit several months later, after you’ve healed, to place permanent crowns

Consider having your dentist at home handle the permanent crowns, but getting the information they need from the original dentist may be difficult. You’ll likely need to plan two multi-day stays several months apart for successful treatment.

This is just one example of how your specific treatment needs may affect your travel plans. Know beforehand what you plan to have done and how you’ll account for follow-up visits or changes.

Travel Preparations and Considerations

Before traveling abroad, it’s best to be as prepared as possible to be a guest in another country. At a minimum, you’ll want to ensure you have a valid passport and the funds needed to cover travel expenses.

After that, consider the following:

  • Location and logistics — Knowing where you’ll be staying and how you plan to get around is best. You’ll also want to ensure any other activities you want to do on your trip will be compatible with your treatment schedule.
  • Travel advisories and safety concerns — Stay updated on recent travel advisories for your host country. Consult other travelers online to avoid scams that may target tourists.
  • Health risks — Different parts of the world have different disease profiles. If there are illnesses common in your host country that you wouldn’t encounter at home, consider getting vaccinated before traveling.

Get the dental care you need at a price you can afford. Find your DentalPlans savings now.

Dental tourism is a growing industry, as many people from countries like the United States can find quality dental services at a lower price by going abroad.

This is especially the case for procedures like dental implant surgery. These procedures require a high degree of skill and expertise but can vary greatly in cost from one location to another.

If you’re interested in getting dental work done in another country, do your research. Get advice from others who have done it before. Look for a reputable dental clinic with good patient feedback, and make sure you’re financially and logistically prepared to travel.

Hungary: An Overview

Situated in Central Europe just east of neighboring Austria, Hungary is a pioneer of dental tourism and is now popular with thousands of overseas patients who generally find exceptionally high-quality care administered by skillful and knowledgeable practitioners.

This diminutive country had a large impact on Europe’s history as one of the biggest powers of Europe during the reign of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the end of World War I the Empire was dissolved, with Hungary losing around 72% of its territory.

In 1989, after a succession of authoritarian and communist regimes, a new democratic parliamentary republican government was established following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. Today, Hungary is one of the world’s top 30 tourist destinations , and a well-developed high-income country.

Budapest, the country’s capital city, is regarded as one of the most picturesque in the world. Standing on the gently curving Danube River, the two cities of Buda and Pest on each side of the River were connected by the Széchenyi Chain Bridge in 1849, and the city became unified in 1873.

Glamorous and exciting, Budapest is an alluring city for travelers, at half the cost of other Western European cities! Other cities in Hungary worthy of a visit include Pécs in the south, Szeged in the southwest and the wine capital of the north, Eger.

The rural area outside the cities offers a simpler life, a slower pace and a glimpse into how things used to be. It also offers endless opportunities for outdoor pursuits – from bird-watching to cycling and horseback riding.

Hungary is one of the world's first medical travel destinations, where citizens of ancient Greece basked in the healing thermal waters. Budapest boasts several world-famous thermal spas ; enthusiasts have no shortage of choice all over the country.

For dental patients, Hungary’s top-class facilities provide a first-rate experience for your dental care and for leisure time before, during and after your treatment.

Where is Hungary?

A land-locked European Union (EU) country located in Central Europe, Hungary shares borders with Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

International flights arrive at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport and several other cities throughout the country. These days, "no-frills" airlines operating throughout much of Europe offer cheap, frequent flights between most European countries, including Budapest. If you're traveling overland through Europe, Eurail and other train services provide a multitude of schedules to most major Hungarian cities.

Why Visit a Dentist in Hungary?

Hungary was one of the first to open its borders to neighboring countries for dental and medical care and it has earned a well-deserved reputation for providing high quality, affordable care. The additional revenue generated by Hungary's long-standing dental tourism industry has been re-invested;  Hungary’s facilities are now among the best in the world.

Budapest, the capital city, is Hungary's most popular destination for dental care. Well-established, verified clinics such as  Feher Dental Team , Evergreen Dental and Digital Dental Art offer every services from simple checkups to dentures, implants and other complex dental procedures. Many of Budapest's best clinics are a stone's throw from historic sites, great restaurants and lodging to suit every budget.

For those willing to head out of the big city, less expensive options are available throughout the country where you will find reputable dental centers. Much like the dental border towns in Mexico, cities near the Austrian, German and Swiss borders provide 40-65% savings, along with convenient travel. Picturesque towns, such as Gyor and  Mosonmagyaróvár, have some of the world's highest densities of dental clinics due to the influx of Europeans who have been traveling here for decades for dental care. North Americans and travelers from all over the world are also discovering northwestern Hungary as a gem of a dental destination.

How Much Can I Save

Hungary’s excellent infrastructure, combined with its high-quality treatments and affordable prices, make it one of the world’s premier locations for dental care. Compare our prices and look at some of the savings you can make by booking your dentist in Hungary with us:

Hungary Travel Information

Most people outside Central and Western Europe fly into Hungary, with international flights available from around the world, particularly into Budapest.

Travelers from the UK and Ireland will find frequent and inexpensive flights with a variety of budget airlines – Easyjet , Ryanair , Wizz Air and Jet2 –offering a large inventory of affordable fares.

Where to Stay?

You will find there are many suitable places to stay within a short distance of your chosen dentist in Hungary, with all styles of accommodation from low-budget to high end.

Budapest and other Hungary cities and towns are awash with spas and baths; you'll find plenty of hotels based around the thermal waters. Or for something unique, hunting lodges or baroque and medieval castles.

Is Hungary Safe?

Violent crime is low and it's safe to travel throughout the country. Budapest and Hungary's larger towns share annoyances with other large cities in the rest of the world: less mindful tourists can be targets of petty thieves and pickpockets. If you take common-sense precautions when traveling in Hungary or any unfamiliar place, you should have a safe, pleasant and rewarding visit and treatment!

Best Time to Visit?

Our dentists in Hungary are open all year round, so you may visit at any time during the year. As with most European climates, temperatures vary considerably from summer to winter. The Continental climate makes rainfall unpredictable; bring an umbrella for the rain (and swim trunks for the year-round warmth of Hungary's healing thermal waters!).

Summer is peak tourism time, along with generally higher rates for lodging and other travel amenities. Spring and autumn are often good times to visit, when the weather is less extreme and discounts can be had on flights and lodging – and sometimes dental treatments!

Payment Methods

Our Hungarian dentists accept cash in US dollars, Euros or Hungarian Forint.

Major credit/debit cards are also accepted, and any amount paid will be converted to Hungarian Forints at the current rate of exchange determined by the Hungarian National Bank. Check with your preferred clinic as to what cards they accept. Credit cards may be subject to a small surcharge (3-5%).

Bank transfers are possible but must be agreed in advance and payment made before the treatment is completed.

Is Hungary Wheelchair Friendly?

Although there have been improvements in recent years, accessibility for individuals with disabilities is variable. Historic buildings, churches and other sites often have steps, and wheelchair ramps are not necessarily provided. The cities are likely to be more accessible than the countryside; hotels and restaurants increasingly have disabled facilities, particularly in Budapest.

Getting around towns may be difficult in a wheelchair. Sidewalks may be uneven and narrow, or lacking completely – and dropped or lowered curbs are not the norm. While public transport is reliable throughout the country, most do not yet offer basic facilities for disabled access. Thus, taxis are usually the best way of getting about.

Do Dentists in Hungary Speak English?

While Hungarian, or Magyar, is the country’s official language, our best dentists depend on international travelers for their business success. Thus, fluent English is spoken by all Dental Departures specialists, hygienists and staff. You will also find English spoken in most hotels, and will generally find that most people under 30 speak English, as it is now compulsory in Hungarian schools.

Is the Quality of Dental Care the Same as Back Home?

Training and qualifications for dentists in Hungary are among the best in the world , and entails undergraduate study, qualification and the completion of ongoing accredited continuing education courses.  The best dentists and clinics in Hungary are registered with the Hungary Medical Chamber as are auxiliary staff, including as hygienists and dental assistants. All Hungarian dentists must register with the Hungary Ministry of Health. Further, general dentists who wish to specialize in, for example, orthodontics or implantology, must also complete a three-year specialist training program.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong? Are There Warranties or Guarantees?

While our best clinics provide the highest quality care, no dentist anywhere in the world can guarantee 100% clinical success. All our verified clinics in Hungary warranty the work performed; check with us on details before booking your appointment.

For the rare complication, Dental Departures will work on your behalf to solve any problems, if you have booked an appointment through us. Less than one percent of our patients experience any problems; in those instances, we work to see any issues put right.

What Else is There in Hungary?

Most visitors to Hungary naturally stay in Budapest, the country's magnificent capital. It is not hard to see why, given the city's old-world charm combined with modern facilities. From the cobbled streets of Buda Castle to its grand Baroque architecture, Budapest is unique and diverse. Timeless bridges span the Danube, where the West meets the East, and where you can just as easily listen to classical concerts in the Opera House as the latest grooves in trendy clubs, or shop in the newest malls and quaint antique shops.

Wine lovers and foodies will revel in the varied local and international scene throughout the country–and a trip to one of the vineyards would not be complete without indulging in some local cuisine in a vine-draped courtyard.

While Hungary is land-locked, it boasts the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton. Spa lovers flock to its shores every year, where a variety of venues offer healing waters for every taste and budget.

Hungary has a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the caves at Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, the Tokaj Wine Region and the Old Village of Holloko. These are classified as areas of special physical or cultural significance and are certainly worthy of a trip.

Wherever you decide to have your dental care in Hungary, you will find a range of leisure activities to engage in before and after your treatment.

Getting Around Hungary

Hungary has an excellent rail and bus system, with Budapest serving as a central hub. The Hungarian railway system is centralized around Budapest with three stations serving the East, West and South of the country.

Four of Hungary’s cities – Budapest, Szeged, Miskolc and Debrecen have tram networks and Budapest also has an underground metro, as well as a suburban rail service around the city.

Buses are clean and inexpensive but can be a little crowded. Taxis are readily available in Budapest, along with the ubiquitous Uber . Before jumping into a taxi, make sure you check the meter is working and ask the price before you get in. Taxis ordered by phone charge less than those hailed on the street.

If you are thinking of hiring a car, most of the international car rental companies are represented at the airports and in the cities. You will need your driving license.

UK, Ireland, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens can visit Hungary for up to 90 days as a tourist without a visa, providing they have a passport that does not expire within six months of the trip’s end.

Distances and Flying Times from Lizst Internation Airport:
