Vehicle overview

The Dodge Journey could very well be the car that time forgot. It debuted back in 2009 and has been pretty much the same vehicle since. While this longevity is admirable and speaks to the inherent goodness of the Journey's design concept, there's no denying that it's behind the times in quite a few areas.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2018 Dodge Journey SE 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

As in previous years, the 2018 version of the Journey has three rows and a low price, but it lacks quite a few of the safety features buyers might expect, even when fully optioned. Its base engine is a truly underwhelming four-cylinder paired to an outdated four-speed automatic, and the combo results in subpar fuel economy. A stronger V6 is available, but even so equipped the Journey can't keep up with other three-row SUVs.

It's not all bad news for the Journey. We like the ride quality, and the seats are comfortable all around. The 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system included on upper trims is also a solid system, although it sadly has not been upgraded to the latest version that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

The Journey will get you where you're going, and will do so for less money than many competitors. But overall we think you'll be happier with vehicles such as the Kia Sorento, GMC Acadia or new Volkswagen Tiguan.

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our first drive of the 2014 Dodge Journey SXT Plus (3.6L V6 | 6-speed automatic | AWD).

NOTE: Since this test was conducted, the current Dodge Journey has received some revisions, including an improved infotainment interface and standard third-row seating. Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's Dodge Journey, however.

Acceleration

Drivability, seat comfort, ride comfort, noise & vibration, ease of use, getting in/getting out, which journey does edmunds recommend, 2018 dodge journey models.

All four Journey trims come standard with front-wheel drive and, excluding the GT, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (173 hp, 166 lb-ft of torque) paired with a four-speed automatic. Opting for all-wheel drive (or the front-wheel-drive Journey GT) gets you a 3.6-liter V6 (283 hp, 260 lb-ft of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is also available as a stand-alone option for the SXT and Journey trims.

Standard feature highlights for the Journey SE include 17-inch steel wheels, a height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40-split second-row seats (with slide and recline), dual-zone climate control, keyless ignition and entry, and a six-speaker sound system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface.

Options packages include the Connectivity package (Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, voice commands and a leather-wrapped steering wheel), the Popular Equipment package (three-zone temperature control with rear-seat vents, a conversation mirror, overhead console storage, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel) and the Comfort/Convenience package (a power-adjustable driver seat).

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels and contents of the Connectivity and Popular Equipment packages. A Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen package gets you the desirable 8.4-inch touchscreen plus adds three-zone automatic climate control, aimable interior lamps, overhead console storage, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. The SXT's Premium package adds satellite radio, a conversation mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel and the power-adjustable driver seat.

The Dodge Journey Crossroad comes with 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels and the contents of the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen package. Further options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, a premium six-speaker stereo system with subwoofer, navigation, a sunroof and the Driver Convenience package (a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and a universal garage door opener).

The range-topping GT trim gets 19-inch alloys, remote start, a security alarm, leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, and the premium stereo system. Additional options are largely the same as for the Crossroad, but a Trailer Tow Prep package, which adds a hitch and four-pin wiring connector, is also available.

The 2019 Dodge Journey comes in four trim levels: SE Value Package, SE, Crossroad, and GT. A four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is front-wheel drive. A V6 engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission is available. AWD is available in models with the V6 engine.

If you're going to buy a Journey, it’s best to skip the sparsely equipped lower trims and jump up to at least the midlevel Crossroad. It’s the first trim available with some convenient tech features and driver aids.

Each model offered additional features for an extra cost at the time of sale. That means you may be able to find Dodge Journey models with features in addition to those listed here.

This Dodge provides a smooth ride, even over rough roads, though handling leaves room for improvement. The Journey is less agile than many rivals, and there's plenty of body roll when taking turns.

Avoid the base four-cylinder engine. It feels underpowered at times, provides lackluster acceleration, and makes a lot of noise. The V6 feels more energetic and moves this SUV more easily, though it's still not as impressive as some rival powertrains.

The automaker cropped the number of trims four to two for 2020, leaving just the SE Value and Crossroad. Dodge also made adjustments under the hood, dumping the all-wheel-drive 3.6-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. That leaves the 172-horsepower front-wheel-drive 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a four-speed automatic transmission as the sole powertrain.  

The Journey shares the brand family styling and resembles a three-quarter-scale Dodge Grand Caravan from many angles. In the SE Value, the anonymous look is completed with hubcapped wheels and black plastic trim pieces, but higher trims get a healthy dose of chrome and upscale-looking features. The Crossroad’s large 19-inch painted aluminum wheels and body-colored trim are quite handsome and help bump the vehicle’s looks in a positive direction. 

The Journey’s interior is clean but lacks excitement. As expected, there are plenty of plastics and budget materials, but it’s inoffensive and fully serviceable. The Crossroad trim gets a much bigger 8.4-inch touchscreen (over the 4.3-inch screen in base models), that dominates an otherwise austere dash.

The standard 2.4-liter inline-four engine is underpowered for the Journey’s relatively heavy two-ton weight, and is loud under acceleration without pulling very hard. The archaic four-speed automatic transmission doesn’t help matters much either. Previous versions with the 283-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission delivered lively acceleration and a smooth feel. It’s the powertrain of choice for buyers shopping in the used market. 

Remarkably, the Journey’s ride is somewhat of a standout feature. It’s comfortable and leans more toward a softer feel than a sporty one. Even with the larger wheels on the Crossroad, the ride maintains a comfortable and composed feel over most road surfaces.

The front seats are comfortable but only offer a six-way adjustment, which cuts away at the degree of freedom other vehicles provide. Passengers up front are not afforded the ability to adjust seat height, so longer trips for very tall or very short people can become uncomfortable. The second-row seats are well-padded and spacious, with plenty of room for two people. Despite the airy feel inside the cabin, three across in the back seat is quite a squeeze for anyone of average size. The rear seat slides, which can open up more legroom for third-row passengers or increase the cargo space in the back. 

The Crossroad’s leather seats make the interior very comfortable and are an improvement over the cloth upholstery in the base models. Even so, it’s hard to ague with the value of the SE’s cloth seats. Loading child seats is simple in the Journey. Its ample headroom and somewhat squared-off door openings make easy work of lifting little ones in and out. When folded, the rear seats open 67.6 cubic-feet of cargo space, which is plenty for even larger items and trips to the hardware store.

The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen in the Crossroad is parent Fiat Chrysler ‘s gift to the automotive world. The system is bright and colorful and uses easily understood icons and menus that make operation easy. Uconnect is responsive and full-featured and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. 

 The Journey does not check any boxes for buyers looking for plenty of advanced driver-assistance safety tech. There is a standard backup camera and parking assistance, but not much else. In crash testing, IIHS rated the Journey as “Good” in most areas, but notably marked it as “Poor” for small overlap front crashworthiness. The Journey’s headlights also earned a “Poor” rating for lack of brightness, and the child seat LATCH anchors received a “Marginal” rating for ease of use. The Dodge was awarded four out of five stars overall in NHTSA crash testing, again getting a ding for its front crash scores.
