Here’s What You Get

We’re taking YOU to the Super-Star of off-shore islands in the Dominican Republic. Think Sun, Sand, Booze, Boats and Bikinis! You can thank us later but for now let us tell you about the ridiculously beautiful Saona Island… The first tourist boat to dock at Saona was Christopher Columbus in 1494 and Saona has not ceased to amaze visitors for the last 500+ years!

What’s so amazing about Isla Saona? A good question deserves several good answers:

  • This is a real island mon! We’re talking about 110 sq kilometers. Saona is not a tiny off-shore key. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see.
  • Is turquoise, transparent ocean water your thing? We hope! Take a Selfie because ocean water this color is found at few places on earth.
  • Seriously, white sand AND palm trees? Yes, it’s a killer combination. The quintessential Caribbean island deserves the quintessential Caribbean scenery; ivory sands lined with rows of swaying palms.

You may be saying: “Ok I get it, Saona is beautiful but why should I spend money to visit?” An excellent question deserves several excellent responses:

  • We’ll hit the Caribbean Sea on a speedboat and slowly cruise you back to the mainland on a spacious catamaran. Oh, there’s also music, animation and open bar. This is the Caribbean Sea folks. How many opportunities will you have to sail the Caribbean Sea?
  • It’s an All-inclusive, Full-Day, outing and you need some time away from your Punta Cana resort. You get the boat, the open bar and the food. Oh and we pick you up and drop you off at your lobby. That was easy!
  • The natural pool is so stunning it’s not really fair. So, we kinda take you to a sandbar, far from the coast with clear, waist deep water. We give you rum and you may find a starfish or two at your feet. We hope this sounds ok to you…
  • The time on Saona island is priceless. Visit the Tiki Bar, dance merengue, visit the Tiki Bar, play volleyball, visit the Tiki Bar, walk the beach, visit the Tiki Bar, hit the buffet.

It’s your vacation to Punta Cana and you may only have ONE opportunity to do this the right way. Go with the pros to Saona!

Isla Saona is the #1 demanded excursion in Punta Cana so Book now to ensure your spot.

The Sun the Sand and a Drink in Your hand!

Excellent service with local collection points, good connection to boats and a very good day out. My only criticism would be the beach vendors, but this is not really the companies fault so I would not drop the rating because of it

This was a fantastic cruise! I highly recommend it! The staff are awesome, the transportation to and from your hotel is nice (our van had A/C!!😁) and the lunch on the beach was delicious, fantastic, awesome!!!…

Had a great time on this excursion!! Max was our tour guide . He was very informative and made us feel secure with the locals and what we would be doing. Playing in the ocean on the sandbars, drinking rum and coke, and jetting along on a fast boat to a catamaran party. Couldn’t have had a better time. The lunch on the island was very good but the restrooms were a little scary. Make sure u bring towels and plenty of sun screen! This tour was exactly what we wanted it to be. Spending the beautiful day on the water. We even had our own pirate along for the ride.

Our tour to Saona Island was great. Punta Cana Tours did a great job making sure we had a good time. The tour operated pretty close to on time but you are in the Caribbean and everything runs a little slower here. LOL Our tour guid Ramond or Raymond was great. He spoke 4 languages and gave information very clearly so you knew what you were supposed to do and where to go.

Now to the good stuff. The bus ride was an hour through some pretty countryside on a nice bus with AC. Once you get to the drop off location where you get on the boat its time to go to the island. There is one stop along the way where you can get in waist deep tropical water and have some drinks. All provided and not watered down like I was expecting. Then back on the boat and on to the BEAUTIFUL Saona Island. Words can’t describe it. Palm tree lined seashore with white sand beaches and tropical aqua blue water. Plus they feed you and furnish all the drinks you want. Overall this trip is a MUST DO if you’re in the Dominican Republic. And Punta Cana Tours should be the tour company to take you there!

This is truly an exceptional company. It is not often you find a company with this level of customer service. A very special thank you to Garry for going above and beyond, even after hours, to make sure all of excursions and transportation needs went flawlessly. We will definitely be back many more times. As for Isla Saona, it really is like being placed inside of a post card. All of the guides made sure that we were not only safe at all times, they went out of their way to ensure we had to best time. Thank you all for making our wedding trip special for all of us.

Isla Saona is one of the most beautiful beaches we saw near Punta Cana, specially when we stayed inland. The water, sand, view, natural pool were the highlights of this excursion but it could have been organized a little better. The food and drinks were ok. All in all its worth it just for the transportation and beauty itself. Tip: Carry your own beach towel. A lot of sunscreen, sun glasses and snack food.

We had a great time! Its a long day on the bus. But well worth it. Nice tour ended at Saona Island for eats and a big party! We would go back!

When vacationing in a foreign place it’s always the best when you hook up with a tour group that shows you the real side of the country. I give two thumbs and two toes up for this trip. It could not have been done any better with the beautiful beaches, great barbeque and dancing. The laid back side of life is a beautiful thing. Brian S

The island of Saona is beautiful and we loved the whole experience on the catamaran. The crew were all friendly and you could tell they totally enjoyed their job. The food was good and honestly the massage (for additional fee) was one of the best I’ve ever had. It was by far our favorite day in DR. Only downside, it wasn’t clear from the website details that we would be on a bus for almost 3 hours going to the port to leave. I would definitely recommend this excursion!

Excellent service, very punctual, great environment, great food. The natural pool and Saona Island are two of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. Sandro, the tour guide was FANTASTIC, very charming, friendly, and makes sure everybody understands. (He gives the tour in Spanish, English and French). I would highly recommend Punta Cana Tours and will likely book another trip next year when I plan to take my entire family to the Dominican Republic for my wedding!.

We also used This company for a trip to Saona Island and we used them for our Airport Transportation. The Saona Island trip was beautiful I only wish we had more time to chill on the Island. The drive to and from the airport were good my one gripe is to find my driver At the airport you need to push through a sea of quick talking taxi drivers all of which try to confuse you so you buy a ride with them instead of taking the trip you already paid for. Overall I rate the company 4 out of 5 stars for one hiccup on our first excursion.

Great day trip to Saona Island! I was in Punta Cana with my boyfriend for the weekend and was so glad we took a day trip to Saona Island! We were picked up early in the morning from our resort and it was about an hour’s drive to the beach where we’d get on the boat (which is good, because we had time to sleep). We took a catamaran there and really enjoyed it. There was dance music, unlimited rum & coke, “paparazzi” staff to take our pictures, and lots of time to relax and get a tan. When we got to the beach, they gave us an AMAZING barbecue lunch, consisting of grilled pork chops, BBQ chicken, seafood spaghetti, potato salad, seasoned rice, and a bunch of other sides and fruits. The rest of the time I spent napping and swimming on the beach with my boyfriend. I didn’t time it but we had a good amount of time on the beach. The sand there is white, clean, and really lovely. After the beach, we got on a speedboat and got out to a flat pool to swim and take pictures with star fish for maybe half an hour. And again we went out to a deeper location so they could throw fish food out of the boat and we could snorkel and look at the schools of fish. After that, they offered to sell us back the “paparazzi” photos they took of us ($40, why not?) which came with photos of you, stock photos of Samoa, and the music they were playing on the catamaran. Overall, it was a super fun experience and I loved it. I want to emphasize that the staff are really fun-loving and the good vibes are infectious! They really do keep you entertained.

I would caution families on the Saona Island Trip. The island is beautiful, but just be prepared for a long day- about 5 hours round trip transfer time to and from the boats (which included changing shuttles at a gas station). There are LOTS of locals selling things at the boarding point and on the island, take money (or be prepared to say no a lot 😉). There was a photographer that took a lot of pictures of our family in the water- also for a high cost (but you can really get them down in price!) I’m not sure if we would do this again with kids- it was about a 13 hour day. We do HIGHLY recommend Punta Cana Tours for transfers and excursions and would definitely use them again!

The waters around Saona Island are crystal clear and probably some of the prettiest turquoise waters you will ever see. The beaches were super nice, the palm trees made you feel like you were in the south Pacific, and the lunch was good. The catamaran out was entertaining and speedboat back was a nice change of pace. It was a great place to visit while we were in Punta Cana and I would highly recommend a visit to Saona Island if you get the chance.

I arrived with my wife in Punta Cana this year for our vacation. I was promptly greeted by our driver who was very friendly, professional and courteous. The ride to our hotel was nice, and the van was clean, and well maintained. During the week, we also used Punta Cana tours to book a tour at Isla Saona. We had a great time! I’d highly recommend Caribbean Dream and their staff. I travel a lot, and rarely am I treated with such professionalism. Thanks for a great trip, Jared

The island was very beautiful, the ocean had far less seaweed that our resort beach, Bavaro, so we were pleased. The buffet brunch was very plentiful and good. The staff were friendly and we felt comfortable following them all day from bus to boat to island to boat to bus! My only negative remark would be the bus commute time. From our resort to the dock to board the speedboat was 3 hours. The return bus ride was half of that time, 1 1/2 hours. There were also two stops along the way that did not look like passenger pick ups.

I send an email asking few question about a tour, my surprise was to have an answer from them super fast. I booked the tour, the picked me up in the time they told. Not even 5 or 10 minutes like I’m used to (in DR they have a saying “Hora Dominicana” which is 1/2 or 1hr after the time is set up) . The tour to Saona was OUTSTANDING! The guide was explaining all the way about the city and the culture. Isla Saona is a paradise, great food and good animation team. Im already making plans to book more tours. Gracias, I had a BLAST!

Catamaran ride to Isla Saona was the most memorable experience of our DR 2022 trip. The excursions with our hotel were pricey so I found this offer online for a much better price. The bus picks you up at the hotel and takes you to the catamaran where girls with rum and coke were already waiting for us. Everybody on the boat had a lot of fun dancing to the rhythm of latin music. The island itself is the prettiest place that I have ever been to, surrounded with palm trees, white sand and butterflies. As soon as we arrived to the island, buffet was open. On the way back we stopped by the natural pool where we took pictures with the star fish. Thank you for the great time!

We went to Saona Island with my family on 8/16 and we had the best experience ever. The ride from the Resort to the boat was smooth. We had a funny guide who kept us entertained. He spoke English very well which made it easier for us understand each other. It was a long day but was worth it. The speed boat ride, the Cataraman, party boat was really fun. We enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the team at Punta Cana Tours. Next time we come to Punta Cana we will surely use you again. Thanks again!

We booked the Saona Island excursion. The actual island experience itself was wonderful. The shuttle was late in coming to get us (which we found out later was not the fault of the tour company but a large group of guests who only showed up partially on time). There were some children on our excursion that were very loud and energetic on the bus; our tour guide was great in joking around about the noisy kids. We took the speedboat to the island, stopping at the natural pool to swim and take pictures with starfish, then relaxed at the island, ate lunch, and took the catamaran back. Other reviews mention the vendors approaching them at the island and made it seem as though they were very aggressive and wouldn’t leave you alone. I found that a firm but pleasant ‘no thank you’ for any venders ended any persuading they tried. Any of the vendors the whole week we were there weren’t loud or obnoxious, they would simply try to show you their wares but were really good about backing down when you said no. Overall we really enjoyed the trip; it was worth the long ride from our resort in Punta Cana. The island was beautiful, all of the employees and our tour guide were friendly and really made the trip fun. I’d recommend it for anybody looking into day excursions from the resorts!

We booked our tour with Punta Cana Tours after reading several online reviews. We were not disappointed. Our tour guide, Emerson, got us off to a great and welcoming start and continued to keep us informed about local information and the what to expect next on the tour. After a short drive to Bayahibe we boarded a powerboat and headed to Saona Island with a short stopover to swim with the starfish. The island, beach and water were gorgeous! A nice lunch and drinks were provided. At the end of the day we boarded a large catamaran for a lively ride back, complete with rum drinks and dancers. It was a great day and our tour guide was exceptional. Long day but well worth the time and money.

I did the excursion to Saona Island and it was pretty good. I can surely say the team of Punta Cana Tours is super attentive, punctual and professional. I know a lot of DMC companies in Punta Cana, but their Customer Service is incomparable. I highly recommend them. Besides the wonderful staff, the tour was excellent, very safe, the food and drinks really good. I had a great time!! yen

We didn’t find out until late the night before we were due to go home that our trip was going to be extended for a day due to weather back in the US. We had wanted to go to Isla Saona but did not have time during our initial trip. I immediately went online to try and book a trip to Isla Saona with an outfit. Punta Cana Tours allowed us to book at almost 9pm the day before the trip and their tour guide Max and driver Elvis were amazing! The transportation in both the van and boats were clean and safe. The trip was a beautiful way to spend our extra day. I will go again with this company in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the Dominican outside of their resort!

Overall the experience was very pleasant. We were picked up and greeted at our hotel promptly. Once picked up, we stopped at other nearby hotels to pick up other guests who too were going on the excursion. On our way to the dock, we stopped on the side of an intersection to switch and wait for another van.The cruise, natural pool, and the island was everything the website promised. The staff was very friendly, energetic, and professional. We would highly recommend this cruise for adults as it is not too kid friendly (a lot of alcohol, loud music, an dancing).

The Isla Saona tour, it was definitely my favorite. Picked up by shuttle, transferred to bigger bus, taken to an area where we were to get on a boat and head towards our destination. This was the clearest, most beautiful blue water I have ever seen. (They had several photographers taking candid photos throughout the trip and offered a dvd to buy at the end for both excursions). The photographs taken on the Isla Saona tour were especially great, I’ll admit. Actual time on the island was only a couple of hours, including time to eat, but it was a blast. Then we left on a catamaran where more drinking and dancing ensued. We were then shuttled right back to our hotel! If returning to this area I would definitely book through this service again!

I booked this trip on line in Feb. 2022, Saona Island Excursion, after reading all the great reviews of all the other travelers. They picked us up ( wife and I ) in our hotel lobby on time like they had promised in a new and clean vehicle with the A/C on. This was the best money spent during the week. It was a full and fun filled day, catamaran boat ride out to the Island and a nice speed boat ride back. Also great entertainment, dancing and beverages for all ages all day long. I highly recommend this trip when going to Punta Cana and for a very reasonable price you can a purchase a Caribbean Lobster on the Island…Thx. Paulv-Bos

had a wonderful time. i was worried about the tourist draw for this excursion, but you’re in punta cana, you’re already part of the tourist trap. anyway, the tour guides were amazing and so accommodating. we went to the island by a speed boat and came back in a catamaran, which i think is the best and only way to do this. also, the provided buffet lunch was probably one of the best meals i had while in punta cana. fill up on the tender chicken. definitely worth going. the only annoying part was when they tried repeatedly to sell the pictures they took of us. it would have been easier if they weren’t trying to sell all the photos as a package. they’d sell more if people can just buy individual pictures. but great trip overall

Trip and service was great. Tour guide “Presidente Daniel” was a treat. We did the all day Sonana trip. It was beautiful but I wouldn’t recommend it for children. Many all day drinkers can’t handle their booze. Trip there and island was fine but boat ride back was full of college kids that were there for free booze and they we are mess. Maybe we just had a bad group, but it was terrible experience. Nothing against tour company but maybe cut back on the booze on the way back. My better and half can party with the best of them, but rude drunk people throwing garbage in the sea, spilling drinks and falling on everyone is a little off. Take a booze cruise for that.

After a long flight, complete with delays, from Chicago, we arrive at PUJ for a much needed vacation. Going though security and immigration in the airport was a real pain. My suitcase had been gone through and a wheel on my bag was busted off. All I wanted to do was get to my hotel, and so far, this trip wasn’t starting out well. After leaving the security area, we were greeted by a nice man (I forgot his name) that was ready and waiting to take us to our hotel. There were what seemed like a sea of taxi drivers all vying for our business. I was very glad I had pre-arranged to be picked up by punta cana tours. They were courteous, very nice, and helpful as they took my wife’s and my luggage and helped us into the van. I was impressed. The van was clean, nice and comfortable and our driver was very helpful and informative on our drive to the hotel. Later that week, we also booked a tour to Isla Saona through the Again, they were fast, prompt, and very professional. The trip to Isla Saona is something not to be missed. What started off as a less than perfect trip, ended in a very enjoyable vacation. I know Punta Cana Tours and their staff, had a lot to do with it. Thanks for everything guys, Mike

Our trip to the Dominican Republic was terrible. The only thing that was great was how the staff as promised, helped us to make the best of it. We had all kind of problems with the hotel, good thing we had 3 days out booked with Punta Cana Tours. We went on Saona Island everything was Great, the trip to the capital city was too long but well organized and our fishing charter for the day was professionally planed. We thank you guys for your service, we will speak highly about you in Texas. Woods

While our trip was short to DR, transportation provided through Punta Cana Tours was long. We waited over 30minutes for transportation from our resort to the excursion and no contact was made from the company to notify us. Had we not stayed in the lobby a little longer, the driver would’ve came and left without us and have no regard to reach out to us. However, Isla Saona was beautiful, the transportation to and from the dock to the island was fun filled, with entertainment, drinks and a beautiful view on a speed boat and a catamaran. The food given to us during lunch on the Island was buffet style and American food but tasty! We would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone visiting DR as it is a beautiful sight and worth visiting!

A fantastic experience! Well worth going on this day-long trip. We’ve went as a family of 3 with our 4YO daughter. Punctual pick-up from the hotel. Our group counted about 15 people. After reaching our “naval departure” port we’ve been wizzed off in a speedboat which was a very fun ride. After a few moments we’ve found ourselves swimming in the natural swimming pool drinking some vitamins %-). Then had some pictures with starfishes taken and wizzed of again on the speedboat until we’ve reached Isla Saona. Beautiful beaches and postcard picturesque water!!! After lunch went back to mainland on board a catamaran! Fantastic experience! Would definitely recommend.

I would like to say that I would DEFINITELY recommend Punta Cana Tours to my friends and family if they visit the Dominican Republic and choose to partake in any excursions. We had a blast on Saona Island. All of the logistics were handled appropriately and we were very pleased. At Saona Island, everything was amazing. The only thing we would have changed is that we would have preferred to take the speedboats out to the island in the morning and then ride the catamaran back in the afternoon. It would have been nice to be able to cap off the fantastic day of relaxation with a party cruise back on the catamaran as opposed to partying on the way there. Just to reiterate, I will most definitely be recommending Punta Cana Tours to any of my friends and family that choose to visit. Thanks for helping make our vacation a fantastic time!

Isla Sona – The tour itself was good, the catamaran sailing was quite nice and relaxing although overpriced products were being sold. Once we got to the island, it was great and we had a good time being by ourselves on the beach. The food was average. Catamaran tour:- Cheaper than the Isla Sona tours and the snorkeling was probably the highlight. Don’t forget to bring in a water camera for the tour. They will hawk you pictures that cost around $40 and its not worth it. Other than that it was a memorable experience

How long is the boat ride from Punta Cana to Isla Saona?

You cannot take a boat directly from Punta Cana to Saona island as the distance is too far. To reach the jump off point for Saona you must first drive to the town of Bayahibe. Normal drive time is about an hour but if you're with a group excursion, drive time can be up to 2 hours due passenger pick up at Punta Cana resorts. Once in Bayahibe there are two options to reach Saona: motorboat, which takes about 40 minutes or catamaran which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.  Unless you've chartered your own private catamaran, all Saona group excursions will include one way via motorboat and one way via catamaran.

How long is the Saona Island excursion?

Expect to be gone approximately 10 hours on a typical Saona island excursion from Punta Cana or up to 12 hours if your hotel is located in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana's northern most section. This includes round trip bus transport from the resorts, round trip boat transport to Saona and of course some island time!

You can opt for a private charter which will take only about 8 hours. And if you want to really get there quick, you can take a helicopter excursion to Saona island .

Why is Saona Island so popular?

At 100 square kilometers, Saona is a behemoth of an offshore island with miles of unobstructed tropical beach, turquoise waters and coconut palms. It really is the quintessential, tropical shoreline in the Caribbean. The motorboat and catamaran ride, to and from Saona, is just as memorable as the island itself with an unforgettable stop at the natural swimming pool - an immense sandbar of waist deep waters where music is played and drinks are served!

What is the best beach in Saona?

Saona island, located off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, offers miles of tropical, white powdery beaches. The most popular, and the most visited for Saona excursions, is Playa los Abanicos. Also popular is Catuano Point and Playa del Gato. Playa Palmilla is mentioned a great deal but this beach is located on the mainland and not on Saona. Off Playa Palmilla is where the renowned natural swimming pool is located, a popular sandbar stop for Saona excursions.

Where do boats leave for Saona Island?

Saona island boat departures leave from the southeastern Dominican town of Bayahibe which is about an hour drive from Punta Cana. If you are on a group excursion with others, transport to Bayahibe can take up to 2 hours when factoring in other passenger pick ups.

Does anyone live on Saona Island?

Saona island is part of the Dominican Republic's Cotubanama National Park which prohibits development and inhabitants. With that said, the small fishing village of Mano Juan was the only community that existed before the national park's declaration in 1975; it was permitted to remain with development and population restrictions. Today about 500 individuals live in Mano Juan.

How long is the boat trip to Saona Island?

Saona Island is located off southeastern shores of the Dominican Republic and is only reachable by boat. The closest mainland town is Bayahibe from where there are two options to reach Saona: motorboat, which takes about 40 minutes or catamaran which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.  Unless you've chartered your own private catamaran, all Saona group excursions will include one way via motorboat and one way via catamaran.

Why go to Saona Island?

Saona island is the only offshore island relatively close to Punta Cana. The trip to Saona combines two of the most sought after activities for tourists to the Dominican Republic: getting out on a boat and spending time on the beach; preferably the island kind! And Saona itself is worth the trip, surrounding by calm Caribbean seas it is the quintessential tropical island with miles of powdery beaches, bordered lazy coconut palms and lapping turquoise waters.

Can you snorkel on Saona Island?

Typical excursions to Saona island do not include snorkeling. Although there are coral reefs just offshore from the town of Bayahibe - the jump off point for the Saona island excursion - these reefs are located in deeper waters that are more conducive to scuba diving.

Saona Island is one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet, and the secret is out - this remote, pristine paradise has become one of the focal points of the Dominican Republic’s  tourism boom, and now attracts about one million visitors every year.

Happily, this paradise isn’t in danger of becoming a parking lot - the whole island is protected as part of the Cotubanamá National Park. The only buildings you’ll find on the island are the two tiny settlements of Catuano, a Navy base on the western edge of the island, and Mano Juan, the main town located to the south. Thanks to the protections in force on the island, Mano Juan is still a sleepy fishing village, and its traditional wooden houses painted in different colors are part of the island’s charm.

What to expect on a boat trip to Isla Saona

Most Isla Saona tours take you there by speedboat or catamaran and depart from Bayahibe (although you can also set off from Bavaro, Punta Cana , Cap Cana and even Santo Domingo). Traveling by speedboat will get you to Saona faster, while catamarans offer a more leisurely journey - you can walk around onboard comfortably and see more of the coastline as it glides by.

Traveling to Saona by boat gives you the best chance to admire the bird-thronged mangroves along the coastline, the deserted beaches, some of the park’s eight emerged coral reefs and almost 400 grottos.

Most tours, whether by speedboat or catamaran, will stop to let you off for a swim in the biggest natural pool in the Dominican Republic - a huge expanse of shallow sea in the Catuano strait that separates Isla Saona from the mainland, with a floor of silky-soft pure white sand and unbelievably bright-turquoise water. Many tours provide snorkelling gear so you can get up close and personal with starfish and schools of colorful tropical fish.

From the natural pool site, it’s another 20 minutes to Saona Island proper. If your tour didn’t include lunch aboard the catamaran, then you can expect lunch on arrival. The buffet lunch is a great introduction to Dominican delicacies featuring fresh fish and shellfish, chicken, plantains, rice, juicy tropical fruit and exotic rums and cocktails as well as a standard party bar.

If swimming in paradise isn’t quite enough, you can liven things up with a game of beach volleyball or don fins for some more snorkelling.

Book your tour to Saona Island here!

Where to stay

Because Isla Saona’s status as a pristine paradise depends on its protection from new tourist megaplexes, you won’t find anywhere to stay on the island itself. Instead, your best bet is to stay at one of the many resorts or boutique hotels in La Romana , Bayahibe or Punta Cana .

Getting there

Saona Island lies offshore of the southeastern tip of mainland Dominican Republic. Dead south of the La Altagracia province, politically Saona belongs to Altagracia’s western neighbor, La Romana.

Getting to La Romana from the capital city of Santo Domingo takes approximately 2 hours by car. From La Romana to Saona Island, travel time varies enormously depending on how you decide to get here.

You’ll find more than a dozen tour companies offer public and private tours , with many offering extras like lunch, an open bar, hotel pick-up and drop-off, scuba-diving and live entertainment. Shop around for the best tour by asking agencies what extras they offer. Prices vary according to the agency and the extras included, and sometimes how you book, but you can expect to pay between USD $50 - $100 for a round trip.

You can also get to Saona by helicopter straight from Punta Cana . Helicopter flights take 25 minutes and start at USD $299. The view from the air is other-worldly - in fact, you’ll be flying close to where the helicopter scenes in the original Jurassic Park were filmed! You can read more about famous DR movie locations here.

dominican republic saona island excursion

Saona Island, formally named Isla Saona, is part of Parque Nacional Cotubanamá (Cotubanama National Park), formerly called Parque Nacional del Este.  Saona Island is the most popular and most visited attraction in the reserve.  Saona is inhabited by about 400 residents; humble, friendly, and hospitable saoneses make a living from tourism, fishing, and art crafts mostly crafted from jícaras (coconut husks).

The only “town” is Manu Juan , located on the south side of the island, a fishing village with little wooden homes styled in the traditional architecture of country homes on the main island of the Dominican Republic, painted in cheerful pastel shades contrasting with the natural richness of the island.

As you sit on a lounge chair and frolic on the waters of the beach steps from your resort in Punta Cana, you may find yourself asking…”How much better can it be?, Why should I pay to go on a tour when I have a great beach right here in my hotel?”… Allow us to tell you why…just take a few minutes as we attempt to describe this jewel that truly needs to be seen and experienced to believe it.  If you need further proof, just read reviews or ask someone who’s been here.  We encourage you to place Saona Island on your “top things to do while in Punta Cana”, in fact, it is the most sold tour and we are confident it may be the highlight of your trip.

The Vibe… relaxed, happy, lively, natural

The Water… clear, surreal tones of blue, warm, shallow, home to a large colony of starfish

The Beach… lounge chairs for relaxing under palm trees with magazine cover-worthy views, diamond white sand, leaning palm trees for that Instagram post, great food, and hospitable service just steps away.

The Experience…

  • Depending on the tour you choose, you’ll have an enjoyable ride by catamaran or smaller motorboat.
  • Most tours will make a stop at the amazing Natural Pool, often called the biggest natural pool in the world.   The water is hypnotizing with shallow water no deeper than your waistline.
  • Snorkel on coral reefs with friendly colorful schools of fish.
  • Walk around natural pools where hundreds of starfish have made it home. (See tips below for helping us keep the starfish healthy)
  • Relax under the shade of coconut groves along the shore
  • Hike trails through lush flora as you are serenaded by birds leading to more secluded beaches with leaning palm trees with water perfect inviting you to swim and snorkel.
  • Feast on delicious fresh fish often served with rice cooked with coconut milk and of course a refreshing Piña Colada made with the freshest fruit and coconuts mixed with Dominican rum.
  • Let your feet sink into the white sand as your hips move to the rhythms of merengue and bachata.

Best Things to Do in Isla Saona (Saona Island)

dominican republic saona island excursion

When you step foot on Saona Island, you may wish to take a while to simply marvel at its beauty and take hundreds of photos on this postcard-worthy piece of heaven; once you pinch yourself and realize you’re not dreaming, you can immerse yourself in the wonderful activities that Saona has to offer.

Following is a list of wonderful activities you can experience during your visit to Saona Island:

Enjoy the Beaches

The only thing you’ll be wishing for during your day trip to Saona Island is more time to enjoy its beaches.

  • The Natural Pool – On our way to Saona Island, your tour will most likely make a stop at “The Natural Pool”, often called that largest natural pool in the world.  A massive sandbar creates this slice of heaven in the Caribbean Sea where you can walk on a sandy bottom with clear water perfect for families with children since the water is only a few feet deep.  Be sure to watch where you walk, hundreds of starfish indigenous to this region and the colorful Lambi Conch can be seen at the bottom, if you feel a tickle on your legs, it may be schools of friendly fish.  Children and adults alike will treasure this experience.  Various tour operators offer you drinks as you wade in the water, it is the ultimate swim-up bar in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
  • Canto de la Playa Beach – A short hike from Mano Juan will lead to this beach where you’ll find fewer crowds and more snorkeling opportunities.  The waters are amazing, just like the rest of the island, just feels more secluded.

Shop & Dine at Manu Juan

This charming fishing village may be small, but you’ll have a fun-filled and relaxing day.   Bring a little cash to support local artists by shopping.  Saona’s residents make a living through tourism and fishing, on the island, there are various casual outdoor dining places selling fresh fish (really fresh).  They’re so happy you’re there and show it with a smile, love, and care when preparing meals.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is the most popular activity in Saona Island.  Along the rocky coastline, you can snorkel along healthy coral reefs with abundant colorful sea life.  As you snorkel over this natural aquarium on warm Caribbean water, you’ll completely forget the winter blues and hustle of your everyday life.  You may spot manatees, sea turtles, dolphins among the abundant sea life.

dominican republic saona island excursion

Scuba Diving

Book a scuba diving tour, diving professionals will take you to the best diving sites in Saona Island for an unforgettable experience.  Popular diving sites are along the reefs in Dominicus and Viva Shallow.

Go for a Hike

If you can manage to get away from the water and the shoreline, go for a walk along the marked hiking trails.  A hike will allow you to appreciate the lush flora, fauna.  There are cave systems with great archeological importance where Taino natives took refuge, the most visited is Cave of Cotubanama , named in honor of the chief.  Along the trails, you’ll also encounter beautiful freshwater springs.

Turtle Recovery Centre

Isla Saona is a turtle nesting site, locals care about their preservation.  Visit the Turtle Recovery Centre so you can learn about their efforts, a great learning experience for the whole family.

Saona Island — known as Isla Saona in Spanish — is a picturesque island only a short boat ride away from Punta Cana and Bayahibe that offers unparalleled wild nature and beautiful beaches. It’s a part of the Cotubanamá National Park and a sanctuary to unique species of birds and sea creatures.

If you’ve been wanting to reconnect with your natural side, visiting Isla Saona should be a must-do for your Caribbean vacation! This is why we are sharing this Complete Guide to Saona Island with you.

Where Is Isla Saona Located?

So, now you are wondering: “Where is Saona Island?”

Saona Island is located to the south of Punta Cana, just 12 miles off the coast. It belongs to the Cotubanama National Park and is fully protected by the Dominican government because of its abundant and wild natural life.

You can get to Saona Island from Punta Cana or Bayahibe.

Trip to Saona Island on a boat

How to Get to Saona Island?

It is easy to reach Saona Island by boat or yacht. Most Saona Island tours leave from Bayahibe and arrive straight to the gorgeous wild beaches shortly after.

If you want to have a Saona Island day trip, you might be wondering what the best way to visit this beautiful Caribbean island is. The truth is, many tour and excursion providers try to fit as many people as they can on a boat or catamaran and being stuck in a crowd of people you don’t know can ruin your entire Saona Island experience.

This is why we offer private and exclusive Saona Island tours , with no-one else on board apart from the crew and your group! You will be able to enjoy the beautiful ride along the waves to Isla Saona and follow your unique itinerary without feeling rushed or completely dependent on your tour provider and a large group of people you have never met before.

Best Things To Do on Saona Island

Swim in the natural swimming pool.

On the way to Isla Saona, there’s a gorgeous “natural pool,” a large area with waist-deep shallow and crystal clear water.  The pool is formed because lots of sand naturally gets accumulated in one area, bringing ocean levels to just a couple of feet — and making it feel like a “pool”!

You will practically be standing in the middle of the Caribbean Sea…How cool is that?!

Isla Saona natural pool is the largest natural pool in the world and there are lots of things you can do during your time there, from relaxing in the beautiful waters to dancing merengue on a boat and enjoying some Dominican rum!

And don’t forget to set some time aside to search for the gorgeous starfishes that are abound there! 😉

Explore Wild Island Beaches

After your visit to the natural pool, you’ll be on your way to Saona island to enjoy its wild beaches!

Caribbean Life & Travel magazine has selected Isla Saona’s unspoiled beaches as the best beaches of the Caribbean. And it’s not surprising! With its white sand, turquoise waters, and an abundance of palm trees, it truly looks like a slice of Paradise!

You can relax on the beach with a cocktail or a soft drink or join in a volleyball game. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, go scuba diving or snorkeling in the crystal clear Caribbean Sea to see lots of beautiful fish and interesting sea creatures!

Do you want to experience the best beaches of the Caribbean?

Eat delicious seafood .

What can be better than a big plate of fresh seafood after a day full of adventure? The Dominican Republic is famous for its incredible seafood, and Saona Island lives up to the expectations!

Enjoy a nice plate of lobster with local rice and a Presidente (the BEST local beer!) and share your adventures with friends and family. And then go for another relaxing swim!

Discover Local Fishing Villages

Saona Island only has two small villages and a total population of just around 500 residents, but the charming villages of Mano Juan and Catuano are well worth your visit.

At Mano Juan, you will find a few gift shops with typical souvenirs to take back home with you, stands with local art, and a small restaurant that serves fresh island food. Most families in Mano Juan make their living by fishing, so you can expect freshly caught local fish accompanied with yummy and healthy sides, such as plantains, rice, and cassava.

Few tourists actually visit Mano Juan when they come to Saona Island, so incorporating a visit to this fishing village into your Isla Saona itinerary will give you a chance to experience this tranquil tropical island off the beaten track!

Best Beaches of Saona Island

Best Beaches of Saona Island

Saona Island has numerous beaches to choose from. It offers seemingly endless miles of white sand beaches, but some of the most popular Saona Island beaches are Canto de la Playa, Playa Bonita, and Playa del Gato.

Palmilla Sandbank is the beach where the natural swimming pool is located. This is where you can relax in shallow waters and search for starfish. However, be careful not to touch the starfish you find because your sunscreen is toxic for them.

Isla Saona also has multiple caves that you can explore, but Saona Island beaches are more popular.

Best Saona Island Tours

Saona Island is a beautiful Carribean destination to visit, but HOW you visit it matters a lot. The conventional way to visit Saona Island is to go on an excursion on a big boat with a crowd of people you do not know and a mediocre buffet lunch. You will be limited in time and your itinerary will be determined by your tour guide.

This is why we are committed to providing Dominican Republic visitors with an alternative and more exclusive way to experience Saona Island. Our private half-day or full-day boat tours allow you to escape the crowds for a memorable Saona Island tour to experience this slice of Caribbean paradise on your own terms. What Is Better: Isla Saona vs. Isla Catalina

Isla Catalina is another beautiful Caribbean island, just a short boat ride away from Isla Saona. Both islands are worth the visit and have their advantages, but your experiences will be a bit different.

Isla Catalina offers a more intimate experience because it is a quieter island and tourists don’t visit it as often as Saona Island. It also offers a better snorkeling experience.

Saona Island’s beaches are more scenic and overall it is a more popular experience — and for a reason!

What Is the Weather Like at Saona Island?

Saona Island is located just off the coast of Punta Cana and Bayahibe and you can expect the quintessential Caribbean weather: warm, sunny, and simply beautiful!

If you ever get hot during your Saona Island trip, simply go for a swim in the crystal clear waters or drink a cold Presidente !

Want to experience warm, sunny, and simply beautiful up close?

Tourism during covid.

Saona Island tourism remains largely unaffected by the pandemic. Dominican Republic does not have strict mandates or lockdown restrictions and you can travel freely.

Traveling to Isla Saona in your own private boat is the safest way to explore this beautiful Caribbean island. Instead of being stuck on a large boat with a crowd of other tourists from different countries, you will be traveling on your own private boat to and from the island.

Moreover, Saona Island’s more secluded beaches that you can reach on a private tour make social distancing much more enjoyable!

Where to Stay in Saona Island

Visiting Saona Island is usually a day trip and you will be back in your hotel by the early evening, so there is no need to search for accommodations on Saona Island. However, the finishing village of Mano Juan does have a small hotel where you can rent a cheap room for the night.

There is also a growing number of ecolodges and eco-tourism camping sites, but we still recommend going back to your hotel and coming back for another visit if you feel like you still have things you want to do and see!

Snorkeling Experience in Saona Island

History of Saona Island

Isla Saona is a relatively small island — just 42 square kilometers long — but it has a rich history.

The indegineous Taino people, the native populations of the Dominican Republic, occupied Saona Island before Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1494. The native Taino population called Saona Island “Adamanay” in the native Arawak language. There is currently a push to go back to this original name for Isla Saona.

Christopher Columbus renamed the island to commemorate his friend Michele de Cuneo, an explorer from the city of Savona in Italy. Michele de Cuneo also later became the first governor of Saona Island.

However, approximately three decades after Columbus’s first visit and the Spanish conquest, the Taino population of the Dominican Republic — including the Saona Island — was diminished by old world diseases, such as smallpox, and brutal work conditions established by the colonizers.

Saona Island then remained uninhabited for a long period of time. In the 1940s, Rafael Trujillo, a Dominican dictator, established the small village of Mano Juan and used Saona Island as a place of exile for political objectors.

Now Saona Island is a welcoming and popular destination with tourists from all over the world because of its natural beauty and unique untouched island atmosphere. The famous Bounty Chocolate commercials were actually filmed on the white sand beaches of Saona Island!

Want to write your own page in Saona’s history?

The village of Mano Juan is still there and is one of the two charming fishing villages on Isla Saona, along with a village called Catuano. Mano Juan is the bigger village on the island but still has only about 500 residents who dedicate their lives to fishing, making art, and living in tranquilidad (Spanish for tranquility!).

Visiting Saona Island Excursion: What you need to know

Table of Contents

Probably my favorite day in the Dominican Republic was when I did the excursion to the beautiful Saona Island. If you’re planning your Dominican Republic trip, check out this guide to see more information on the island and how to book your trip.

When I was backpacking the Dominican Republic , I made sure to spend a day exploring the island of Saona. I would highly recommend for anyone to do this trip!

What is Saona Island?

Saona Island is a beautiful island off the coast of the Dominican Republic. It is a protected area, so you can enjoy unspoiled beaches and miles of palm tree jungle. It’s a peaceful gateway for any kind of beachgoer and provides great snorkeling spots.

Where is Saona Island?

The island is located to the south of the country, between La Romana and Punta Cana. The best way to reach the island is by taking a tour from Punta Cana or even from Santo Domingo directly, since it includes transfer from your hotel to the port, the boat ride, food, and the way back.

Alternatively, you can try to make your way to the port yourself in Bayahibe, but you will still have to join an excursion in order to visit the island.

How much does the Saona Island tour cost?

I strongly recommend booking online a few days in advance so that you receive a confirmation and a cheaper price. I hadn’t booked in advance, so I ended up paying a bit more because I found a tour office in the city center. Expect to pay anywhere between $60 to $90 if you’re leaving from Punta Cana. Anything else is a scam. The trip from Santo Domingo is slightly more expensive because it’s farther.

The Catamaran ride

First, your transfer will drop you off in Bayahibe, where you will be placed onto various Catamaran boats. The boat ride lasts about 90 minutes and is on the open water, so be sure and wear sunscreen! I enjoyed getting my tan on in the front of the boat but there are some shaded areas.

catamaran boat

On the boat, there will be salsa music playing and an open bar. After a few drinks, some of our fellow guests started dancing and it turned into a party.

There are also local guides who will go around the boat taking your picture. The guy I had was great, and also took amazing photos of me once we reached the island. I had fun posing for on the boat and in the sand, but the photos are very very expensive, so just be aware!

photographer on boat

During this day trip, you’ll first take a transfer to the port, where you’ll have an open bar on a catamaran boat, filled with salsa music. There are several photographers onboard who took some amazing, albeit expensive photos both on the boat and on the island.

Isla Saona visit + buffet

palm trees on saona island

When you get to the island you will be amazed at the insanely blue color of the sea and pristine white beaches! The island is a hidden little paradise, and you can spend your time wandering around, snorkeling, or basking in the sun on a lounge chair. There is still the open bar with basic drinks, or you can pay a little bit extra to enjoy a piña colada on the beach.

While on the island, you will also be treated to a traditional Dominican lunch- buffet style. They have some local dishes as well as some classic favorites for the picky eaters. The food was delicious!

Natural pool

girl dancing natural pool

After a few hours on the island, you’ll make a pit stop on the way back at a natural pool. The water there is a crystal clear blue. It’s really as clear as a manmade pool! There are many starfish who live there, but please do as the guides say and don’t touch them!! We want to preserve their natural habitat. You will spend a short amount of time there before heading back to conclude the day at the port.

Way back to shore

The ride back was in a smaller motor boat. It takes way less time, but a lot less fun! My friend had brought a speaker though so we had fun blaring music that everyone could dance and sing along to. The ride took maybe 20-30 minutes, and then we reached the shore, tipped our guides, and were taken to our transfer vans to bring us back to our hotel for the day.

Is Saona Island worth it?

Honestly, I think this day in Saona Island was my favorite day of the trip so I would definitely say it was worth it! The island is so beautiful and preserved, and I felt that I was in those Caribbean calendars that are hung in the office every year. The transportation alone would have made the price worth it, but it also included food AND drinks? What more could you ask for??

Saona Island Tour Catamaran | Speedboats - Colonial Tour and Travel

" Saona Island is so beautiful that you will think it is a dream" - Colonial Tour and Travel The visit to Saona Island is the excursion that everyone recommends when they know that you are visiting the Dominican Republic, it really is a heaven on earth !, almost idyllic for its landscapes and the transparency of its waters. Saona Island is located in the southeastern end of the Dominican Republic, is the largest of the Dominican Republic's islands, is part of the Eastern National Park and serves as a sanctuary for several species of migratory birds. Originally its name was "Adamanay", is an aboriginal primitive name. On the second voyage from Don Christopher Columbus to Hispaniola Island, he was accompanied by an Italian from Savona, an Italian region. This Italian was the one who discovered the Island and Don Christopher Columbus wanted to baptize his honor, calling it with the name: "Savona Island". For years, the inhabitants of the Island were the name difficult to pronounce, reason why they changed the name for: "Isla Saona". Saona Island also has interesting caves, such as Cotubanama named in memory of the proud indigenous chief of this region who was captured by the Spanish conquerors and executed in Santo Domingo. One of the few populated areas of this national park, Saona Island has a picturesque settlement called Mano Juan . This fishing village with its pastel wood houses is also a craft center. On Saona Island we will find kilometers of solitary beaches with crystal clear white sands and surrounded by millions of coconut palms, we can find some caves that recall the presence of the native Tainos, coral reefs ideal for diving and fish and shellfish farms, Has the "Natural Pool", is an area of crystal clear water that can be seen in the background innumerable species such as the stars of sea among others, and birds such as flamenco. There are 112 species of birds within the limits of the park, half of which correspond to species in the country. Of this total, 8 species are endemic to the island and 11 endemic species of the Caribbean area. The manatee is a marine mammal in danger of extinction. There is also the dolphin. . Saona Island has a surface area of 110 km/sq, its population, which is concentrated in the town of Mano Juan, is of approximately 500 inhabitants with only 69 houses of families, live of the fishing and are hospitable, friendly and very receptive with the Visitors, do not forget to bring some candy for the kids, they love it. The beaches of Isla Saona were selected among the best beaches of the Caribbean by Caribbean Travel & Life magazine. Its beaches are spectacular, unspoiled, with lush palm trees and turquoise waters that make them one of the most beautiful regions of the Dominican Republic. Colonial Tour and Travel has several types of excursions to Saona Island which we describe below and you can book online, directly with our assistants in hotels or by calling our different offices in the Dominican Republic..

Beautiful island trip

Must do tour if visiting Dominican. Many tour operators, we booked through Viator and their sub contractor was excellent.

dominican republic saona island excursion

This trip is rated no1 thing to do in the Dominican it’s £140 each !! after a very early start and long coach ride ( hotel pick ups) we got to the harbour a whole coachload eventually piled onto a speedboat then another minibus full arrived so we had to get off wait around and get on another there’s now 50 of us cramped together with life jackets on we’ve been bobbing around with the swell so several people were being sick and crammed together was not ideal ! we sail off for 5 mins then told we can snorkel no warning so we could undress put lotion on etc ! the tour guide has to inspect everyone’s life jacket individually so this takes 25 mins. the sea is very choppy and there were a few fish as the boat lad was throwing bread in many people struggled to get up the steps as the waves were strong we set off again breakfast is served a triangle of ham n cheese sandwich squashed to death and warm as it had been in a foil tray the selection of drinks we were promised was rum n coke water or warm beer as I don’t drink coke i had little choice we got to a lagoon in the sea half hour later hundreds of other craft too told we would see starfish but didn’t had photos taken ( come back to that) nice n shallow more warm beer and next course whilst in the sea was Doritos n cheese on sticks again warm from a foil tin we all get on again takes half hour then 40 mins later the boat breaks down we have to wait for another to rescue us we all had to step over to this other boat not tethered together very well the First Lady lost her footing and screamed there was a baby on board too we set off again it’s now 1pm we get a mouthful of cava to greet us some basic bbq food salad n rice and rum beer or wine. The Island looked lovely however the sea was rocky and so much seaweed I tried to snorkel but there was nothing but churned up sand we were allowed to stay a bit longer than usual due to the hold ups we had paid for the premium experience but it was no different from the standard £79 package! The photographer then wants to show you the pics and they were nice but as we were on a boat trip we didn’t take our cards he wouldn’t sell us less than 6 photos at $60 we had 500peso on us so didn’t get any he tried to get us to go PayPal but with no Wi-Fi on the island that wasn’t an option We then get on a boat to the catamaran this again takes ages and scary for some people we party back with same drinks for 2 hours when we reach the harbour another scary swap to a speed boat for the 5 minute ride! no toilet break straight on the coach for the two hour ride back 6.30am - 8pm is a long day for a few hours on a beach we worked out we had been on 6 boats and I would say don’t bother. We did get a little compensation £50 from our rep but felt the other £230 had been wasted our beach at the hotel was better than the island with full choice of food n drink

dominican republic saona island excursion

tell the truth it is shambolic and a con booked through a seller in bavaro not as described not all inclusive not on a catamaran inedible dreadful food only rum as drink 1,5 hrs on island con artists every where hugely expensive photos 5 hr round trip on buses with multiple stops hearded like cattle at chaotic port avoid this scam

The process of this excursion has been described in detail by another reviewer, so I will just review the experience. The time on the Catamaran is festive and filled with dancing, drinking and photo ops! The employees take lots of posed photos of each group, the photo cd of which is then available to purchase before you head back from the island. They pour drinks of rum and cola for any interested, I wouldn't say it's Premium Rum, but it tasted fine and relaxed the crowd. The ride to Saona takes about 1.5 hours, and I personally would rather have gone by speedboat to get to the beach faster, but it was a fun experience and we met some great people from ALL OVER the world! The island itself is truly paradisiacal; the water is THAT blue and the beach is THAT white! The catered meal was good, the pork chop DELICIOUS! I did hope, though, that I wouldn't regret eating pasta salad with a mayo dressing, from a food table on a tropical beach, LOL. The beach was gorgeous, the water was cool and a bit wavy, but nothing too rough. After the island, we stopped to snorkel for approximately 20 minutes, then it was off to the Blue Lagoon, which again, is like Paradise. We swam in warm, chest high water for about another hour and then it was back to the harbor. My boyfriend and I both had a really enjoyable day and would go again, by speedboat, another visit!

dominican republic saona island excursion

We had a fantastic day on this excursion. We did the VIP version which limited participants to about 35 on our catamaran. Its a rather long bus ride to the launch site from Punta Cana but we loved getting out of the resort and seeing the country side. Once at the launch site you will have an opportunity to use a public washroom but be warned its gross!!! To get to the catamaran you board a small boat directly off shore. Entry is through the water not a dock, but the water is shallow/not wavy so its easy. To board the catamaran, however, is quite a large step up from the boat. Anyone with mobility issues will have a difficult time. We immediately did the snorkel portion of the tour right in the bay. Initially I was disappointed as I expected to go to a bit more of a scenic location. However, the snorkeling in this spot was good but a bit murky. I had the good fortune to be beside a lady who brought pieces of banana along to attract the fish - and it worked. Bring banana!! When snorkeling dont forget to look UP as well as down. There are alot of fish that swim just below the water surface in this location, I was quite surprised to look up and see a school of fish right near me. The snorkeling is VERY VERY short though. It wasnt 1/2 hr as advertised, more like 15-20 mins. I dont know why these tours always curtail the time in the water! Back on catamaran we set-sail, was very exciting when the hoisted the sail. It was very windy 'at sea', too windy for many of the younger passengers. They played some music and actually served drinks which I appreciated as its so hard to walk on a boat. After about an hour we reached our next stop - Blue Lagoon - an amazing sandbar in the ocean. Lots of movies filmed here. It was beautiful with very soft sand and no rocks/shells or seaweed to contend with. Can take a drink with you as you depart, but bring the glass back to boat! More sailing, more drinks and dancing, some crying kids...reached Saona Island about 1 hr later. The shore at Saona Island is full of rocks and shells, so I recommend bringing water shoes and putting them on before you exit the catamaran. On the Island a good lunch in a shaded area. Lots of lobster, chicken thighs, pork chops served at BBQ. Conch salad, tomato salad with vinagarette, potatoes, rice, pasta served family-style at table. Unlimited Drinks (tips for staff appreciated). A few people mentioned lobster under cooked. I loved the pork chops which was a true surprise! Try them! We got about 2-2.5hrs on the Island with private time. Was extremely nice - but again, bring those water shoes if you want to swim as its rocky with shells/seaweed especially within 20ft of the shore. We had a fairly small group as was the VIP version of trip. So only around 30 people. As a result we made friends with many folks on the tour. Everyone very friendly! We had nick names for each other based on where we were from like Canada, and Ohio, Detroit, Alabama! Very nice folks! On the way back the bus makes a washroom stop for about 20-30mins. There is a good souvenier shop so I did some power shopping and got all the items I needed. This was fantastic as I didnt have to spend half day away from my resort picking up stuff. The tour was pricey, but well worth it.

9 Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana

W ith over 1,000 miles of coastline and some of the prettiest beaches in North America, the Dominican Republic is a popular beach destination. With convenient flights from the U.S. and Canada, Punta Cana is one of the most popular areas in the Dominican Republic. Most travelers head to an all-inclusive resorts during their trip to DR, making for an easy beachy getaway. However, there are several things to keep in mind. Here are the top things to know before visiting Punta Cana.

  • Punta Cana International Airport PUJ is one of the largest airports in the Caribbean with service in-between 26 international destinations.
  • Cabs can be expensive so arrange for a transfer before arriving
  • Spanish isn’t necessary, though it’s nice to use some common phases.
  • Changing money isn’t necessary however cash for tips is necessary.
  • There are several resort areas in Punta Cana, like Bavaro, Cap Cana and La Romana.
  • DR boasts 200 Beaches
  • Nude Sunbathing Isn’t a Thing in DR
  • The Dominican Republic features a National Park, perfect for an all-day excursion.
  • Bottled Water is a Must in DR

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

Other International Airports in The Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Santiago International Airport (STI) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines and Jet Blue Airlines.

Resort Review: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Airport transfers.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Popular Punta Cana Excursions

Arrange for a tour during your visit to the Dominican Republic to learn more about its agriculture and animals.

Feed a Spider Monkey.

Learn about the chocolate production.

Watch a cigar rolling.

Walk through a sugar cane field.

Take a Zipline through the tree canopy.

Learn about coffee production.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

  • Tap or well water
  • Ice made with tap or well water
  • Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
  • Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Need some help with what to wear? Here are all the best tips and products for your trip.

Beach Packing List

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

  • Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
  • Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
  • Watch bartenders make your beverages.
  • Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
  • Drink slowly.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

  • Food served at room temperature
  • Food from street vendors
  • Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
  • Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
  • Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
  • Unpasteurized dairy products
  • ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

I recommend the following product to treat your clothes before departure, available from Amazon.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

  • Antiacid—like Tums
  • Pepto-Bismol tablets
  • Imodium tablets
  • Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
  • Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

  • Pain Reliever
  • Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
  • Cough Drops
  • Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
  • Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
  • Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
  • Anti-Itch Cream
  • Anti-septic wipes
  • Inspect Repellent

Restroom Supplies

When traveling away from resorts, pack some restroom supplies. You will need them outside restaurants and hotels.

  • Toilet paper, off the roll in a plastic bag
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bleach wipes

Note: I left all medications in the original container to avoid issues with security or customs.
