Off the beaten track: Dublin to Galway

dublin-to-galway-hero-v1

Take a left here, a right there and you’ll stumble across charming towns, quaint villages, a pace that won’t rush you off your feet and a genuinely warm welcome

Potter around history-filled valleys, unwind at the sight of glistening waters and fall in love with a trip that’s the very definition of getting away from it all, as you journey across Ireland’s Ancient East and into Ireland's Hidden Heartlands and onto the centre of the Wild Atlantic Way…

Leaving Dublin and heading west, you can get to know County Kildare, renowned for its horse-racing pedigree, elegant gardens and quirky landmarks.

Extravagant living

Castletown House, County Kildare

dublin-to-galway-castletown-house

Built in the 1720s, Castletown House is the first and largest Palladian manor in Ireland, and is all about showing off on a grand scale. The man who built it, William Conolly, was once the richest man in Ireland. He owned 100,000 acres of land, and it was said that it would take 240 horses to haul his half-year’s rent to Castletown.

If you have more time, you can pay a visit to a real curiousity: a barn that’s shaped like a corkscrew. The Wonderful Barn, built at the edge of the Castletown estate, was built to create employment in the local area in 1743.

National Stud & Gardens, County Kildare

dublin-to-galway-national-stud

The beating heart of Ireland’s horse-racing industry has to be The Irish National Stud in Tully. As well as its rich equine history, you’ll find the rather fascinating tale of its founder, Colonel William Hall Walker. He would meticulously record a foal’s time of birth, and draw up the birth charts himself. If he didn’t like the stars, regardless of bloodline, the foal would be sold immediately. A guided tour is a must. As is a trip to the Japanese Gardens next door – another tribute to Walker, who had an obsession with Asian horticulture. If you fancy seeing some of Ireland’s finest racehorses strut their stuff, head to race meetings at these iconic Kildare courses: The Curragh, Punchestown and Naas.

Lullymore Heritage & Discovery Park, County Kildare

dublin-to-galway-lullymore

Meander along the tree-lined roads that surround Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park, and you’ll find yourself in another world. Once a monastic retreat (until it was raided during a rebellion in the early 18th century), the park is now a celebration of the Irish peatlands. A biodiversity tour introduces the amazing flora and fauna of the area. If you have more time, do you fancy some retail therapy? Kildare Village is a designer discount retail park, so get hunting for some great bargains! Hungry? Head to Harte’s Bar and Grill in Kildare town for award-winning food in relaxed surroundings with tasty gastropub-style dishes.

Belvedere House, County Westmeath

Situated in the heart of County Westmeath, the calm exterior of Belvedere House and Gardens, conceals a history of wicked spouses, grand gestures and a battle between brothers. The Earl of Belvedere built the ultimate folly – known as the Jealous Wall – to hide the much grander house of his brother. Talk about sibling rivalry! If you have more time, visit the Cathedral of Christ the King in nearby Mullingar. Constructed in the form of a basilica, the cathedral's twin spires can be seen for miles and it is home of impressive frescoes and a museum of historical artefacts dating back to the 17th century.

Step lightly, for you walk on a land of legend where an ancient deity found his final resting place… This is the seat of the High Kings and Ireland’s geographical centre, and guided tours of the Hill of Uisneach will literally walk you through history. It is here that the four provinces of Ireland meet and Uisneach was once considered the royal centre of Ireland. Every May, the Festival of the Fires ignites the celebration of summer and the pagan sun god, Ériu, who is said to be buried beneath the massive boulder known as the Cat Stone. If you have more time, stay for giant steam engines, a creaking timber water wheel and two centuries of whiskey craft. Charleville Castle, County Offaly

Discover one of County Offaly’s best kept secrets on a trip to Charleville Castle, located just outside the town of Tullamore. Buried deep within ancient oak woodlands, this 18th century fortress has everything you’d expect from a gothic castle – as well as a host of haunting spirits! Guided tours by the current tenants are available when pre-booked, and don’t forget to stop by the ancient King Oak tree that has dominated the demesne for over 400 years. If you have more time, three is the magic number at Tullamore D.E.W. Visitor Centre, which produces triple-distilled, triple-blend and triple-matured whiskey. Housed in a 19th century warehouse, Tullamore D.E.W. is named after the whiskey’s creator, Daniel E Williams.

Science meets splendour

Birr Castle, County Offaly

dublin-to-galway-birr-castle

Sprawling formal gardens, ancient woodland paths and a grand castle – the connections between science and nature are strong at Birr Castle. After all, this is the home of “the leviathan” – once the world’s largest telescope. Back in the early 1840s, the third Earl of Rosse designed this giant and attracted visitors from all over the world to marvel at it. It still works, and sits at the heart of the incredible demesne, along with a Science Centre and award-winning gardens. If you have more time, discover a darker period in history at the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, County Galway. In 1852, it housed 600 inmates and was part of a network of workhouses that was described as “the most feared and hated institution ever established in Ireland.”

Wander the grounds, or perhaps take a boat tour and view it all from a different perspective with Viking Tours. If you have more time, take a thrilling step back through untamed Ireland at Lough Boora Parklands. It’s got walking routes, an intriguing Fairy Trail – 14 fairies live in Fairy Avenue – and lakeside mesolithic sites that were discovered by a local man in 1977.

If you have more time, don’t miss the ancient walled town of Athenry, where you can take a guided tour of 13th century Athenry Castle. But there’s more to Athenry than history – if anyone’s ever heard Irish sports fans sing at sporting events around the world, then you may be familiar with the lyrics inspired by the Fields of Athenry.

Experience the Best of Dublin and Galway in One Week

Spending one week in Ireland is ample time to discover the beauty and charm that the Emerald Isle has to offer. When it comes to breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, Ireland never disappoints.

From the vibrant city life of Dublin to the fascinating cultural scene of Galway, this week-long itinerary promises an unforgettable journey through two of Ireland’s most captivating cities.

dublin tours to galway

Get ready to explore ancient castles, revel in traditional music, and savor the finest Irish cuisine.

2 Days in Dublin

Two days in Dublin is just about the right length to explore the capital of Ireland. It’s a culturally rich city with numerous museums and tourist attractions to visit. And of course, it’s absolutely packed with countless bars and restaurants.

Dublin Day 1 Itinerary

Take in the magnificence of Trinity College

dublin tours to galway

A visit to Trinity College, Ireland’s most prestigious University is a great way to begin your trip to Dublin. Here you can go on a tour of the ‘Book of Kells’. This is a medieval religious manuscript considered to be one of the oldest books in the world.

It is believed to have been crafted by Celtic monks back in a monastery on the Isle of Iona circa 800. The tour is a huge tourist attraction where you can learn all about the creation of the book in fine detail.

And this tour also allows you access to the main chamber of the College’s Old Library, known as the: ‘Long Room’. This incredible 65-foot-long chamber is one of the most impressive libraries in the world and is simply a magnificent sight to behold.

dublin tours to galway

Although at the time of writing the Long Room is going through an expensive restoration process, so nearly all of the countless shelves are empty. But there are some books on display on the ground floor, along with the oldest harp in existence.

Visit Oscar Wilde’s home

Not too far from Trinity College is another cultural and historical point of interest; Oscar Wilde’s childhood home. It’s possible to visit the interior of one of Ireland’s most celebrated poets and literary darlings of the 1800s for the price of 12 Euros. There’s also the option of a full guided tour that lasts 90 minutes and costs 20 Euros per person.

This is a fascinating opportunity to gain insight into Oscar Wilde’s upbringing firsthand. The house is of Georgian architecture and still features period furnishings from his time there. And directly opposite the house, you have Merrion Square Gardens.

This is a lovely park to stroll around and you also have a famous sculpture of Oscar Wilde which is well worth seeing as well.

By the way, if you’re fascinated by architecture and planning to visit Dublin, you won’t want to miss this complete Dublin Architecture Guide .

Visit some Dublin museums

There are over 40 museums to discover in Dublin, which is a huge amount and it’s impossible to discover all of these in just two days of course. Many of these museums are free of charge as well.

Continuing with our day one itinerary of Dublin, let’s explore two of the most popular free museums within the city:

National Gallery of Ireland

Based just across the road from Merrion Square Gardens is the National Gallery of Ireland, which is well worth a visit if you like your art. The permanent collection is totally free to enter and features an extensive number of Irish and European paintings dating back to the Middle Ages.

The building itself is a pleasure to walk around and the gallery is considered one of the best in all of Europe. It’s highly recommended to spend at least 1-2 hours here to appreciate all the great artwork on show.

National Museum of Ireland-Decorative Arts & History

Next on our list is the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, located at Collins Barracks, a former military barracks. This is another totally free museum to enter, which focuses on historical and contemporary collections and gives a deeper insight into Ireland’s cultural heritage, military history, and more.

There are numerous collections housed here which are really fascinating and you can easily spend a couple of hours appreciating the many antiques, costumes, and decorative items from Ireland’s past and present.

Experience the many pubs of Dublin

After a busy first day experiencing the cultural highlights of Dublin, it’s time to end it with visiting one (or several) pubs that can be found in the city.

Of course, no trip to Dublin is complete without savoring a pint of Guinness in one of Dublin’s many pubs. The idea of providing hospitality with a drink and a place of rest is deeply ingrained into Irish history.

Drinking establishments really became fashionable in Dublin back in the 17th and 18th centuries and they’re still just as popular to this day. The city’s Temple Bar district is the liveliest place you could wish to discover, located on the south bank of the River Liffey.

This area is full of traditional Irish pubs, most of which feature live Irish traditional music. The most famous of these pubs is of course Temple Bar, which always appears full and crammed with tourists enjoying a rather costly pint of the black stuff (around 9-10 Euros here!).

But there are a whole host of bars that are just as lively and entertaining and have cheaper Guinness (typically around 6 Euros). Getting some typical Irish food such as Irish stew and a drink in this district is a must!

Dublin Day 2 Itinerary

Dublin Castle

dublin tours to galway

Day two in Dublin begins with a visit to Dublin Castle, a historic site with remarkable architecture and beautiful gardens. The castle is the highest point in all of Dublin and is based handily in the city center.

It’s one of the most important sites in the city with a long, complex history dating all the way back to 1204. You can learn all about the castle on a self-guided tour here and tickets cost 12 Euros for adults.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

dublin tours to galway

After Dublin Castle, the next stop is a visit to the magnificent St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Based in the historical Liberties District of Dublin, the Cathedral was founded in 1191 and is famous for its daily choir and its stunning interior.

There are daily, free guided tours of the Cathedral which you can request in advance via the Cathedral’s website, and entry is free if you have a Dublin Pass which you can purchase in advance as well. Otherwise, it costs 9 Euros to enter for adults, and around an hour should suffice to take in all of its glory.

Guinness Storehouse Factory Tour

dublin tours to galway

Following lunch, it’s time to enjoy a tipple or two of the black stuff at the famous Guinness Factory or Storehouse as it’s called these days. This place is one of the top tourist attractions in all of Dublin, as of course, Guinness is its most famous product that it’s given to the world.

The storehouse consists of several floors full of history about the famous Irish beer, all within the factory that has been producing it for over 250 years. On the top floor is what’s called the Gravity Bar, which features amazing 360 views of Dublin.

Tickets cost around 29 Euros which is a bit steep, but you do get a complimentary pint of Guinness upon reaching the Gravity Bar.

Jameson Whisky Distillery Tour

And having experienced the Guinness Factory, you can follow that up with a tour of Dublin’s other favorite drink at the Jameson Distillery Whisky Factory. Founded in 1780, here you can learn all about this famous Irish spirit. Plus, you can learn how to make your own whisky and get to taste some of it as well!

Tickets cost 25 Euros per adult, which similar to the Guinness Factory price is certainly not cheap, but an enjoyable and fun experience nevertheless.

Traveling from Dublin to Galway

After two days in Dublin sampling all of its many delights (and probably recovering from those delights too!), it’s time to head over to the west coast of Ireland, to the beautiful city of Galway.

Traveling from Dublin to Galway is relatively straightforward. The best option, if relying on public transport , is to catch a train from Heuston Station, which is situated just outside of the city center and certainly within walking distance.

The train ride to Galway takes around three hours and is a pleasant journey, passing through a lot of Ireland’s glorious countryside and stopping off at several small towns. Tickets cost around 30 Euros and the train itself has comfortable seating with plenty of space.

You can catch a bus to Galway which is cheaper but takes longer and the views are quite as aesthetically pleasing.

3 Days in Galway

So how does Galway compare to Dublin? It’s a much smaller city but still has a lot to offer. It reminded me a little bit of what Brighton is to London in England; it’s a different vibe, quirky yet historical as well. It feels more like traditional Ireland compared to Dublin, which of course is a major European city.

3 days in Galway is a good length of time to discover all of the city’s many attractions. Let’s have a look at some of the many things that there are to do and see in this lively, coastal city.

Galway Day 1 Itinerary

Galway City Museum

The best way to start your itinerary in any city in my opinion is to learn a bit about its history, and there’s no better way to do that in Galway than a visit to the Galway City Museum. This is a really good museum that has three floors of interesting exhibitions.

These exhibitions delve into Galway’s past, with lots of fascinating artifacts and historical items. The exhibitions explain what life was like for the Gaelic people several hundred years ago, up to the past century, and the political revolutions that the city has experienced.

It also features Galway’s proud musical history and the many famous rock bands that have played here over the years. It’s free entry into the museum and you can easily spend 1-2 hours here educating yourself.

Visit the Magnificent Galway Cathedral

Galway Cathedral is probably the city’s most impressive building to visit. It’s a Roman Catholic Cathedral that used to be the city’s prison until it was converted in 1958.

The interior of the Cathedral is truly a place of wonder. It’s a huge space inside with amazing brickwork and stained glass windows. Entry to the Cathedral is free, though donations are appreciated.

Enjoy the Atmosphere of the Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter is undoubtedly the beating heart of Galway City. It is known for its vibrant, colorful streets, boutiques, and traditional Irish pubs, most of which have live music most nights.

This can be a surprisingly busy place, in the middle of August all the bars and restaurants were packed to capacity, with a lot of people queuing outside waiting for a table. I would go so far as to say it was busier than Dublin, with tourists from all over the world enjoying the Latin Quarter.

It’s a lively old place with great nightlife, making for an enjoyable end to your first day in Galway.

Galway Day 2 Itinerary

Go on the Long Walk of Galway

Moving on to day two of our Galway itinerary, and we’re starting it with some exercise on what’s known as the ‘long walk’ of Galway. You can begin the long walk by passing under the Spanish Arch; which was built in 1584 where goods were transferred from ships to the quays.

After passing through the arch you can continue down the Lough Corrib, where you’ll pass by a row of traditional colourfully painted houses, with views of Galway’s harbour where you’ll see several fishing boats.

If you’re still feeling energetic then you can continue across the harbour all the way to Mutton Island Causeway. Although you can’t actually enter Mutton Island, the causeway offers beautiful ocean views, with Salthill visible in the distance.

Bask in the sun at Salthill Promenade

Good weather is not necessarily the first thing you think of when planning to visit Ireland, but you may be in for a surprise! If you visit Galway during the height of summer then it’s possible you may enjoy some good sunshine and beautiful blue skies if the weather Gods are kind to you.

Visiting Ireland in Winter? Check this out

Don’t expect super high temperatures, but you may experience some nice days around 20-25 degrees Celsius. And if this is the case, then there’s no better place to soak up the rays than Salthill Promenade, located just outside of Galway.

There are a few sandy beaches along the promenade, as well as shops, restaurants, and cafes.

dublin tours to galway

To finish off a full day of exercise, you can walk (or maybe bike) a nature trail that leads to Menlo Castle. This is a lovely, peaceful nature walk alongside the River Corrib and also passes several University campuses.

After around 30 minutes of walking, you’ll see opposite the river the remains of Menlo Castle. Although it’s not possible to enter the castle as it’s just ruins, it’s still an impressive sight even from across the river.

The castle dates back to the 16th Century and is a reminder of Galway’s rich history. It’s the perfect place to take in Galway’s lovely countryside as well, especially on a nice sunny day.

Galway Day 3 Itinerary

A Day Tour to the Cliffs of Moher

dublin tours to galway

The cliffs of Moher are Ireland’s most famous natural attraction, and a visit there is the perfect ending on your last day in Galway.

It is possible to travel there by public bus, but I’d highly recommend booking a day tour in advance. There are many tours to choose from and a lot of them include various tourist spots that you’ll visit on your way to the cliffs of Moher.

My tour was an eight-hour round trip that left Galway at 10 a.m. The tour guide (who was also the bus driver) was very informative throughout the journey, giving info on the numerous villages that you drive through and the history behind them.

Let’s look at some of the stops you can expect to make on your way to the cliffs:

Dunguaire Castle

dublin tours to galway

This was the first stop on the tour and we were given around 20 minutes to explore the castle. Dunguaire Castle is one of the most famous castles in all of Ireland. It overlooks the shores of Galway Bay and dates back to 1520.

There are a couple of gift shops inside the castle and you can pay to go up to the top level of the castle to have a better view of the shoreline.

Poulnabrone (Portal Tomb)

dublin tours to galway

The second stop on the tour was Poulnabrone, a portal tomb that is the oldest megalithic monument in all of Ireland. It dates back to the dawn of man and is a fascinating site when you consider that’s it older than the Egyptian Pyramids!

What exactly is a portal tomb I hear you ask? Well, it’s a prehistoric stone chamber consisting of two upright slabs and a vertical slab on top, which resembles a table, kind of. They were used for several different reasons, with Poulnabrone being a burial site.

That may not sound very interesting, but when you consider the ancient history of these portal tombs then it is quite an astonishing thing to behold. There are around 180 portal tombs scattered around Ireland as well and they are a unique glimpse into the country’s ancestral past.

Lunch at a Traditional Irish Pub

After visiting Poulnabrone, it will be time for lunch. Included in my tour was a quick stop at a traditional Irish pub. Considering there were around 60 people on the tour, the staff at the pub we visited was extremely efficient and the food (and the Guinness) was very good too. The price of the lunch wasn’t included in the tour price however, which is worth keeping in mind.

Cliffs of Moher

dublin tours to galway

After lunch it is time for the main attraction; the iconic cliffs themselves. Expect dramatic and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, which really are breathtaking. There are two routes you can take at the cliffs; towards the right, you can head towards O’Brien Castle which has an observation tower if you really want the most spectacular views of the cliffs.

I visited the cliffs in the middle of August and there were a lot of tourists there, which meant a long queue to access O’Brien Castle. The other route is over the main cliffs and stretches for several kilometers.

It is possible to do this but bear in mind how much time you have to spend at Moher; our tour had two hours so not enough time to complete the hike over the cliffs. There’s also a cafe, gift shops, an information center, and even a small cinema that has been built into the cliffs.

They really are awe-inspiring and spending a whole day to see them is totally worth doing and a strong recommendation.

Explore Connemara

Visit Ireland's Only Fjord

See Silversmiths at Work

dublin tours to galway

Venture to the true heart of Ireland as we journey to Inagh Valley, learn about 600 million year old Connemara marble in the visitor centre, and visit Ireland's only fjord. Expect to receive nothing but smiles and warm welcomes as we explore the West!

Cong Village Cong was used in filming the 1952 Oscar-winning movie ‘The Quiet Man’, which starred John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Filmed on the grounds of Ashford Castle, the movie has continued to resonate in the area and is still a major tourist attraction. Cong also has a fine example of a ruined medieval abbey, where Rory O’Connor, the last High King of Ireland, is reputed to have died.

Joyces Sheepdog Trials Here you’ll witness a demonstration of working sheep dogs rounding up sheep in the Connemara countryside. You can also check out the newest arrivals in puppies and lambs.

Leenaun Village and Killary Fjord (Lunch stop) Leenane is a place of contrasts. Situated at the head of Killary Harbour, a 16km Fjord, it nestles under the Maamtrasna and Maamturk mountains on the Galway-Mayo border. The area has been inhabited since prehistory, evinced by ancient tombs and the potato ridges climbing the mountains. Leenane is famous for the stunning and varied beauty of its location.

Ireland’s only true fjord, it extends 16km (10 miles) in from the Atlantic to its head at Aasleagh, below Aasleagh falls. It forms the border between Galway and Mayo and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the West of Ireland.

Killary Harbour is also extremely deep, over 45m at its centre. It is a centre for shellfish farming, and strings of ropes used to grow mussels are visible for much of its length. The mussels and clams grown in Killary Harbour are sold at the Westport Country Market every Thursday morning.

Kylemore Abbey. Photo Stop only. The story of Kylemore Abbey is a truly remarkable one that spans over 150 years of tragedy, romance, innovation, education and spirituality. Built as a breath-taking Castle in 1868, it is now the Abbey and home of the Benedictine community of nuns. The Benedictine nuns arrived at Kylemore in 1920 after their Abbey in Ypres, Belgium was destroyed in the early months of World War I.

Inagh Valley Departing Kylemore we travel through the Inagh Valley, one of the most beautiful drives in the West of Ireland. Crystal clear lakes and towering mountains dominate this magical landscape.

Connemara Marble & Jewellery Factory Here we will head to Connemara Marble Visitor Centre, the home of Connemara marble and one of Ireland’s oldest indigenous Industries. Enjoy a guided tour of the marble jewellery factory where we explore the geology and heritage of Connemara marble, as well as view silversmiths and craftsmen cutting and polishing the forty shades of green.

Connemara marble is regarded as one of the most authentic Irish products available in Ireland. Geologists estimate that it is about six hundred million years old. The colour and markings in the marble reflect the natural beauty of the mountains of Connemara. The marble is quarried, fashioned and polished by skilled craftsmen at the Connemara Marble Factory Visitor Centre, Moycullen, Co. Galway.

Galway City Enjoy an overnight in Galway city, the cultural capital of Ireland. Stroll the medieval streets of this bustling town, experience the street buskers and entertainers and some of the best nightlife in Ireland. Overnight stay can be arranged by us or you can choose your preferred overnight accommodation.

Inis Oirr & Cliffs of Moher

Explore the smallest of the Aran Islands

Cliffs of Moher visitor Centre

cliffs of moher

Day two of your trip is equally packed with stunning landscapes and cultural insight as we drive along the scenic Wild Atlantic Way, journey through the lunar-like landscape of The Burren, and visit Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran Islands. A truly comprehensive exploration of the best of the West.

A hearty Irish breakfast is served between 7:30 am and 8:00 am after which we depart Galway for a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. Enjoy stunning vistas over Galway Bay and the Aran Islands as we pass through the glacial karst region of The Burren – over 200 km sq of Limestone rocks forming lunar-like landscape which is unique to this area of Ireland.

Arrive Doolin  (ferry to Inis Oirr ) Arriving in the picturesque fishing village of Doolin we will catch the ferry to Inis Oirr. Inis Oirr (Inisheer) means ‘Island Of The East’ and is the smallest of the three Aran Islands. The Island is about 3 km by 2 km and there are approximately 300 people living there. We can’t possibly say enough about this charming place, it is very special and happens to be one of our favourites! This Island truly has something for everyone.

Just over two hours will give you opportunity to explore by foot, bicycle or horse and cart the many sights, ancient castles, one of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches and several pubs and cafes where local food and traditional Irish music can be heard on a daily basis.

Depart the island and enjoy the Cliffs of Moher Cruise On our departure from the island, we will take a one hour cruise along the base of the majestic cliffs of Moher, a continuous sheer wall towering over 200m (700ft) high for 8 km (5 miles). The view from the base exposes you to the sheer size and allows you to view the hidden caves and inlets not available from the top.

Return to Doolin On return, we will spend approximately 45 minutes checking out Doolin village.

Arrive at the top of Cliffs of Moher  (admission included) (1 hour 15 mins) During your stop at the cliffs, you can choose to Visit O’Brien’s Tower, which stands proudly on a headland off these wonderful cliffs, and enjoy views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay.

Your tour includes a premium admittance ticket to  The Atlantic Edge interpretive centre . Here you can see photographs, exhibits, displays and experiences that will add extra insight to the Cliffs of Moher. Continue the tour to  The Ledge virtual reality cliff face adventure  shown in the audiovisual theatre allowing you to experience life at the cliff face both above and below sea level.

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ a week ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ a week ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • Joshua ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago We found this trip well worth the price to experience and see some of "real" Ireland. Kilkenny was a great little city with plenty of shops, restaurants, and history to explore. Glendalough was such a fantastic time. From the history, to exploring the grounds, to the picturesque walk to the upper lake, it was perfect! The sheep farm was a great experience as well, the whole family enjoyed … More it! We were three adults, a 13 year old, a 5 year old, and a 2 year old. All enjoyed it and had fun! Tour operators Elisa and Peter were great!
  • Chang Liu ★★★★★ in the last week We did the Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour with Kiera and had the best time. Kiera was simply one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had! She explained the Irish history so thoroughly and clearly; she might as well be a history professor! She’s also very funny and so, so friendly. All the shops and restaurants she recommended in Galway were spot on. The tour’s organization was quite smooth and we can’t … More complain a thing. Highly recommend wild rover tours.
  • Mary Norton ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago We truly enjoyed this tour! The driver and host were so knowledgeable and entertaining. The visit to Kilkenny was grand. The experience in the mountains, holy land and sheep farm were all beautiful and lovely! You need to do this tour!
  • Christina McElroy ★★★★★ a week ago We had the most amazing trip to the Cliffs with Yvonne and Steven. She was so funny and knowledgeable, I would follow her anywhere!! Such a wonderful tour and tour guide. Truly enjoyed our visit. Eventho it was foggy it was still beautiful 😍
  • Shauna ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago My family took this tour and it was wonderful! We loved the Titanic museum and the history there. We also loved seeing Dunluce Castle and the gorgeous views there. Then we ended tour at the causeway, which was also amazing. Our tour guide, Una was wonderful and gave great information for the area. We would recommend this tour and company, and hope to be back soon for another tour!
  • Kevin D. ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago This was an outstanding trip. Our Guide Neil and driver Brian were excellent. Neil was very knowledgeable, fun and gave us tons of information and tips. Kilkenny is a wonder city and Kilkenny Castle and grounds were absolutely stunning. The Wicklow mountains offered some great views of the Irish Countyside, but the absolute icing on the cake was Cullen’s sheep farm. This was so entertaining and informative. … More We learned about life as an Irish sheep farmer in the mountains and even got to hold baby lambs. I highly recommend. This was a great trip if you want to get out of Dublin and see a different side of Ireland.
  • Liz Switzer ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago The Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour was fabulous! Rory was a very knowledgeable and kind guide. He also went out of his way to make special connections with almost everyone on the bus. This was such a special experience and I would recommend to anyone visiting Ireland!

Day-by-day itinerary

dublin tours to galway

Board your overnight flight to Dublin today.

Fáilte! (Pronounced “FALL-cha,” this expression means “welcome” in Irish, and you might hear it a fair bit over the next few days.) Head to your hotel and settle in, then get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers over a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Settled by the Gaels and disputed over centuries by the Vikings and Anglo-Normans, Dublin traces its history back more than 1,300 years. Today, you’ll peel back some of the Irish capital’s layers on a comprehensive tour, led by a local expert.

  • Stop in Phoenix Park, the largest enclosed public park in any European capital city. First established as a royal hunting ground by government decree in 1662, this 1,750-acre greenspace today houses Áras an Uachtaráin—the presidential residence.
  • Pass by St. James’s Gate Brewery, the legendary 260-year-old brewery behind Guinness dry stout. More than 50 million barrels ship out of the plant each year, making it the world’s most prolific producer of stout-style beers.
  • Walk through Old Dublin, then step into St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the country’s largest church. Founded in 1191, it serves as the national cathedral for the Church of Ireland, and its arresting Gothic architecture befits a building of its stature.
  • Traverse Dublin’s city center, passing 17th-century St. Stephen’s Green as you go. Afterward, take some time to admire the Georgian architecture of Merrion Square. Another gardened area in the heart of Dublin, it’s been called home by some of Ireland’s foremost writers—Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats among them.
  • See the dignified facade of Trinity College—Ireland’s oldest university.

Fill your afternoon with an excursion out into County Wicklow and pay a visit to gorgeous Glendalough, the well-preserved ruins of a once-influential abbey. Or, if you’d prefer some free time, head down to the shores of the River Liffey and breathe in the ambiance of the lively Temple Bar district.

Glendalough

From $55 per person

Make your way to Ireland’s largest region: County Cork. Sprawling across 2,900 square miles of the country’s southern reaches, it lays claim to a number of tourist attractions. Today, you’ll visit one.

  • From Dublin, head southwest to Cobh, a seaport town of roughly 14,000 on the other side of massive Cork Harbor. Here, you’ll enter the Cobh Heritage Centre: Learn about Irish life, emigration, and maritime tradition over the centuries. (Did you know that Cobh was the Titanic ’s final port of call before its doomed maiden voyage?)

Later, chart a course for Cork—Ireland’s second city, hugging both shores of the River Lee—and settle into your hotel. Enjoy some free time, then sit down with your group for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Now one of Ireland’s most famous tourist sites, Blarney Castle was first built in 1210, then rebuilt in 1446 as a stronghold of the local MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty. Today, you’ll set out into the Irish countryside and visit this famed fortress, completing a popular quest in the process: planting a peck on the Blarney Stone. Originally added as a defensive structure, this slab of limestone supposedly grants all who kiss it “the gift of gab.” Stretch out over the parapet and give it a smooch—then let us know how you feel!

Cap your day with an evening excursion to the historic town of Kinsale and enjoy walking winding streets and tucking into a traditional Irish meal. Feeling some alone time? Spend the night in or take some free moments to explore the neighborhood around your hotel.

dublin tours to galway

An Evening in Kinsale

From $109 per person

Board your bus and roll north to County Galway, a beautiful lake-dotted region with a backstory to match. Before arriving in Galway proper, stop to enjoy some of the best views in all the Emerald Isle.

  • Redefine “taking the scenic route” with a quick detour into County Clare and a walk along the mesmerizing Cliffs of Moher. (Sheer crags stretching into the distance, crashing waves below—you know this one!)
  • Drive on through the Burren. Distinct from the lush greens that typify the rest of the Irish landscape, greys dominate this limestone plateau, punctuated by bursts of wildflowers. Botanists will surely delight in this journey: More than 70% of Ireland’s flower species grow here.

Arrive in Galway, then let your Tour Director take the lead on a walking tour of the city’s highlights.

  • Stroll past a trio of Galwegian icons: Lynch’s Castle, a castle-turned-bank that dates to the 16th century; the rustic home of “Ireland's most prestigious theatre (troupe),” the Druid Theatre Company; and John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, a popular greenspace better known to locals (and the world) as Eyre Square.
  • Get a grasp of Galway’s Norman history by viewing its medieval walls—12th-century fortifications that once encircled the city—and the Spanish Arch. First erected in 1584 as an extension of Galway’s protective walls, its name alludes to the Spaniards who moored their ships and lived in the area.
  • Peruse authentic Claddagh (said “CLA-da”) rings in a local shop. Steeped in legend and symbolism, these pieces of jewelry have been produced in their current guise—two hands clasping a crowned heart—since at least 1700 and are inextricably linked to Galway.

For architecture and vistas plucked out of a fantasy novel, you’ll want to come along on our visit to Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park. If you’d rather get to know Galway a bit better, spend a free day taking The Long Walk through the seaside neighborhood of Claddagh, or see where your feet take you. (The city was named the European Capital of Culture in 2020—there’s plenty to do!)

Later, celebrate your trip with your group during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to Dublin’s airport for your flight home, or continue to Europe’s most popular tourist destination on your trip’s extension. Can you guess where that is?

Please note: Some airport transfers may leave very early in the morning to accommodate return flights.

Fly to England this morning and get comfortable at your London hotel. (If you fancy some exploration, ask your Tour Director for recommendations.)

Few places have influenced world history like London has: This city of roughly 8.8 million people boasts close to 2,000 years of history and four UNESCO World Heritage Sites; serves as a global financial hub; and is the most-visited place in all of Europe. Today, you’ll explore the landmarks of England’s cosmopolitan capital on a guided sightseeing tour.

  • Pass grand Trafalgar Square—named in honor of the Royal Navy’s decisive triumph over Napoleon Bonaparte’s fleet—and Baroque St. Paul’s Cathedral. Perched atop Ludgate Hill, at the highest point in London’s historic center, this Anglican church is recognizable by its soaring dome.
  • See Westminster Abbey, the Gothic church that has hosted 40 coronations and 16 royal weddings since 1066. A further 18 English, Scottish, and British monarchs were laid to rest within, further cementing Westminster’s place in London lore.
  • Spot the Elizabeth Tower (the Palace of Westminster’s clock tower, better known as Big Ben); the 440-foot-tall London Eye observation wheel; Tower Bridge, with its stone handiwork and turquoise accents; and the notorious Tower of London.
  • Stop by Buckingham Palace, the official residence and administrative headquarters of King Charles III. If you’re lucky, you might catch the Changing of the Guard.

Bask in a getaway of royal proportions on this afternoon’s excursion to Windsor Castle. Alternatively, hang back and spend some free time in London. If you need a recommendation, the British Museum’s millions of priceless antiquities are all just a half-hour’s walk from Buckingham Palace.

1. Cliffs of Moher Tour Including Wild Atlantic Way and Galway City from Dublin

⭐️  Rating : 5 Star Rating | ⏳  Tour Length : 13 Hours | ⛰️  Check Rates and Availability  | 💰 €€

This is the highest rated Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher tour I can find online. From 11K reviews (at the time of writing) and they still have a 5 star rating. That is pretty impressive if you ask me!

This tour offers an equal amount of time at both the Cliffs of Moher and Galway City. Which is also something that makes this particular tour extra appealing as it does not feel too rushed.

The day starts in Dublin, before cruising across the country to the famous cliffs.

You will have a total of 2 hours to explore Ireland’s leading attraction, so I recommend spending a small amount of time in the visitor center before taking part in a little bit of the Cliffs of Moher Walk heading in the direction of Hag’s Head. Unfortunately, you will not have enough time to complete the entire route, but this walk will give you an alternative view of the cliffs.

Then you will continue towards the Burren Coastal Route, where you will stop for a brief few minutes before making your way to Galway City.

You will then have two hours to explore the city, which is more than any other tour has offered so far. They also include a FREE walking tour with the price of your ticket. After the tour, take some time to walk the beautiful streets some more, enjoy the atmosphere of the buskers, and perhaps pick up a souvenir or two.

Galway is home to a wide range of restaurants, so you are sure to find somewhere that suits your taste buds.

Tour Inclusions:

✅ Group Transportation (Wifi On Board)

✅ Guided Walking Tour of Galway City

✅ Entrance into the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre

✅ Picture Stop Burren National Park

❌ Food not included

❌ Group of 63 or Less

What a unique and beautiful experience! The bus was very comfortable and we had a good amount of time at each stopping point to really enjoy the area. The cliffs were quite overcast, but it was still a fun time with gorgeous scenery. Our guide Maurice was really great. He was very knowledgeable and engaging and you could tell he really was happy to be there too. He referred to something as “infused with Irish mysticism” and I’ll never forget it – what a cool guy! Thanks, Maurice! Read More Tour Reviews

2. From Dublin: Cliffs of Moher and Aran Islands Tour

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 Star Rating | ⏳  Tour Length : 13 Hours | ⛰️  Check Rates and Availability  | 💰 €€

If you are anything like me, then you will LOVE this tour, as not only do you get to see the Cliffs of Moher from a alternative perspective but you also get to visit Inis Oír the smallest of the three Aran Islands .

This is a really special day, as a trip to the Aran Islands is like no other. They have a magical feel to them, home to raw and rugged landscapes and waters that are so clear that almost doesn’t seem like Ireland.

Once you have finshed exploring the island you will make your way back to the main land by ferry, first taking a little detour via the Cliffs of Moher.

The boat quite literally sails beneath them, you get to see the cliffs for all their glory and really appreciate how mighty they are.

Words can not describe how amazing this experience is!

✅ Transportation to Doolin

✅ Bout Trip to Inis Oír

✅ Sail Beneath the Cliffs of Moher

❌ No trip to the main cliffs viewing point

If you have a day to spend would highly recommend this day trip The Aran Islands was a wonderful relaxing couple hours where we spent time with a local horse and buggy driver who was just awesome. the ferry ride back past the Cliffs of Moher…….Stunning – Read More Reviews Here

Then continue on your way to Fanore, a small Irish town in the Burren. Home to some of the most unique rock formations on the island.

The Burren is not too far away from the main attraction, the Cliffs of Moher. Take some time to explore the cliffs, take in the breathtaking views, and learn about the history.

Before hopping back in your private bus on route to the fishermen’s town of Doolin. The ideal spot for a quiet pint of Guinness, some traditional Irish music, and a bite of lunch.

Our day was simply spectacular! There are not enough words to describe how amazing this day was. He drove us through so many hidden gems throughout the western coast line of Ireland. I want to post all the pictures.! Book this trip worth every penny! Eamon is the commensurate Irishman! 4. Cliffs of Moher, Burren and Galway Bay Rail Tour from Dublin

⭐️  Rating : 5 Star Rating | ⏳  Tour Length : 15 Hours | ⛰️  Check Rates and Availability  | 💰 €€€

Not a big fan of buses or windy Irish roads? Then maybe this is the perfect tour for you!

The tour brings guests to the Cliffs of Moher in a rather unique way. Meet your guide at Heuston Station, and hop on a train to Limerick City.

There, you will take part in a guided tour of one of the main settling grounds for Vikings in Ireland, learn about the city’s history, and pass by famous landmarks such as King John’s Castle.

The tour then continues (by coach) to Bunratty Castle, which was finished in 1425 and after being ignored for a long time but has now been brought back to its former glory.

There is also a folk park in the area, featuring a town that was taken apart and put back together piece by piece. Admission to both experiences is included in your tour!

The tour then continues onto the main event, the Cliffs of Moher. Here, you will have 2 hours to explore the area and learn about the cliffs at the visitor center before hopping back in the coach to drive along the Burren Coastal Route before the final stop in Galway City before making your way back to Dublin.

✅ Train & Coach Transfers

✅ Limerick City Tour

✅ Admission into Bunratty Castle, Folk Park & Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre

✅ Drive Along the Burren Coastal Route

✅ Eyre Square (Galway City)

❌ It’s a very LONG day…

❌ Limited time at each stop, especially in Galway City

❌ No lunch is included in the tour

❌ Medium Group Size of 53 travellers

Wonderful day, thoroughly enjoyed riding the train and seeing the countryside as well as the bus tour. Beautiful scenery at the cliff along with an invigorating hike. Would recommend this tour for anyone coming to Dublin. Made for a great day away from the city! – Read More Reviews Here

5. Paddywagon Tours – West of Ireland Full-Day Tour

This tour starts early in Dublin, but before you know it you will be cruising down the Wild Atlantic Way admiring the incredible scenery.

The first stop of the tour is the small picturesque village of Kinvara, a colourful town famous for it’s ancient fishing village, picturesque harbor, and beautiful landscapes.

Nearby is Dunguaire Castle, where you will stop for some quick pictures of the iconic ruin before continuing along the Burren Coastal Route until you reach the ‘Mini Cliffs’ which are worth taking a nice picture of. The Burren is one of the most dramatic landscapes in Ireland, with its unique limestone formations and diverse flora and fauna.

By then, you will more than likely be feeling hungry, so the tour stops in one of Ireland’s most picturesque towns, Doolin. It is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat and listen to some live Irish music before heading to the main event, the Cliffs of Moher.

The tour includes two hours at the Cliffs of Moher, which is plenty of time to stop, relax and enjoy the world-famous scenery. Included in the price is admission to the visitor center, where you can learn facts about the cliffs and how they were formed.

The final stop of the tour is Bunratty Castle, where you can stop for a picture and a bite to eat in the nearby Woolen Mills store before heading back to Dublin.

✅ Coastal drive along Galway Bay

✅ Visit to the Cliffs of Moher with included admission to the visitor experience

✅ Stop at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

❌ Lunch not included

❌ Large Group Size

❌ Limited time at other attractions such as Doolin and the Burren

We had a beautiful day both trip and weather. The bus driver shared historical information about Ireland, the area and, facts. Things we learn was about the potato famine, the revolution, rock walls, GE buildings, etc. We stopped at the mini cliffs first. from there we could see the Moher Cliffs. Watching the driver navigate the bus down the narrow roads was real talent. The time spent at the cliffs was adequate, just don’t spend a lot of time in the gift shops. On our way back we stopped at the Frantic Chef, there I had the seafood chowder. There was more salmon in that chowder then in a dinner. The whole trip was well worth it. – Read More Reviews Here

6. Cliffs of Moher Day Trip from Dublin

This tour is perfect for those looking for a little bit of extra time at the surrounding attractions. I find a lot of the tours are trying to pack too much into one day. These guys are focusing on three main attractions.

Start the day off with a drive out west, enjoy some time taking in the views, or perhaps sleep off the early start to the morning.

The day starts off at the Cliffs of Moher, which I also like, as I find them to be far less busy at the start of the day. Spend some time exploring their beauty and learning about the landscapes of their location in the visitor center.

Then it’s time to hop back in the coach towards Doolin, a small fishing village known for its colourful town, tasty restaurants, and live Irish music. You will have a little time here to grab a quick bite for lunch before making your way to the Burren. This tour spends a little more time in the Burren than others which is cool, as it is one of the most unique spots in the country.

You will then have some free time at the final stop on the tour, Galway City.

Galway has a lot to offer, so spend some time walking the winding streets and listening to the street talented street artists bring the city to life.

The town walls from the Middle Ages can still be seen between the shops, where you may be able to pick up an Aran sweater or two as a souvenir.

Or, perhaps handmade Claddagh rings are more your style.

✅ Stops in the Burren, Doolin & Galway City

✅ Doesn’t seem as rushed as other tours

The Cliffs of Moher were spectacular. It was an excellent tour both coming to the Cliffs and returning to Dublin. Our tour guide was kind, direct, and very knowledgeable about the countryside and it’s history. I was so excited to make this journey, and would highly recommend it to other Dublin visitors. – Read More Reviews Here

7. Dublin: Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, Wild Atlantic and Galway tour

This tour definitely offers less than others, but that could work in your favour depending on your travel style. You see it is nowhere near as busy. Which could be a nicer way to explore the cliffs.

The first stop is the Barack Obama Plaza, a petrol station dedicated to the former US president. Honestly, I love this station, as it reminds me of one you would get in the States with loads of snacks to choose from. You can also take a picture with a statue of Barack and Michelle Obama, which I’ll admit is a pretty random thing to do while in Ireland . But who doesn’t like a bit of randomness to start the day?

The next stop is the Cliffs of Moher itself, where you will have 2 full hours to admire the surroundings and learn about the cliffs in the visitor center (included in the tour price).

After the cliffs, you will take a brief stop in the Burren, a unique landscape filled with limestone rocks and plants. This is a great opportunity to take some amazing photos!

And then the final stop of the day is Galway City, where you will have an hour and a half to explore the charming streets, grab a bite to eat or do some souvenir shopping.

✅ Admission to the Cliffs of Moher

✅ Brief Stop in the Burren

✅ Stop in Galway

✅ A far less rushed itinerary

❌ Less Stops (which is good or bad depending on the person)

The Cliffs of Moher were spectacular. It was an excellent tour both coming to the Cliffs and returning to Dublin. Our tour guide was kind, direct, and very knowledgeable about the countryside and its history. I was so excited to make this journey, and would highly recommend it to other Dublin visitors. Amazing natural beauty and a wonderful visit to Galway. The trip gives a perfect amount of time at each stop. Bus was top-notch. Our guide Noel was knowledgeable and funny, and Das was a masterful driver! – Read More Reviews Here

8. (Small Group) Cliffs of Moher and Castle Tour from Dublin

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 Star Rating | ⏳  Tour Length : 13 Hours | ⛰️  Check Rates and Availability  | 💰 €€€

The tour begins by stopping on the Burren Coastal Route (for 20 minutes) one of the most unique parts of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Here you can see the unforgiving limestone landscape and maybe even a glimpse of some of the local wildlife.

From there, you will make your way to Doolin, where you will have the option to join a local tour company (additional fee) on a boat tour beneath the Cliffs of Moher. I highly recommend this as it is one of my favourite experiences in Ireland! It really allows you to see just how mighty the cliffs are.

Alternatively, you can continue towards the cliffs visitor centre where you can admire the iconic landmark from above and learn about its history and geology.

The tour finishes with one final stop at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, a living reconstruction of 19th-century Irish village life. Here, you can explore the castle, wander through the village and interact with costumed characters to get a feel for what life was like in Ireland centuries ago.

If you fancy a refreshing pint or a late lunch perhaps pop into adjacent Durty Nelly’s Pub – entertaining the castle guardsmen for centuries.

What sets this tour apart is its small size compared to others, with a max of 25 people being able to join. However, prior warning, I did see a few reviews saying there was a mix-up with the small tour part so maybe it’s best to confirm before booking.

✅ Admission to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

✅ Small Group/Vehicle

✅ Less Rushed Itinerary

❌ Additional Cost for Boat Tour

Jackie was the best. He went out of his way to seek out the best opportunities for us. We covered SO much ground- castles, scenic routes, the cliffs, the best restaurants, shopping. He was an excellent driver, and we felt very safe and relaxed. Jackie had a curated playlist for our tour with a variety of music styles that perfectly matched what we were seeing. It was so cool! Our 8 year old child had a great time and so did we. – Read More Reviews Here

As you travel west from Dublin, your guide will tell you about the area. When you get to the Cliffs of Moher, follow the path along the edge of the cliffs to get a breathtaking view of the Atlantic. The visitor center has a big screen with lots of different types of media that lets you see the cliffs from above and the caves below. Keep going until you reach the cute village of Doolin. Have lunch in a local pub there, and look out for the Aran Islands in the distance.

You will spend 15 to 20 minutes at The Burren and take pictures of its unique landscape. Check out some rare flowers and enjoy the view of the Baby Cliffs.

Then, you will head to Galway, a lively city famous for its strong Irish music, language, and dance traditions. You will have about an hour to look around by yourself.

Jonatan was very good, lots of interesting information on the attractions and history of Ireland, and he also brightened up our trip with some songs sung by him. Excellent! Read More Reviews Here

This tour offers all of the above. Start the day off bright and early, leaving Dublin behind for the West Coast. Listen to your guide as they tell stories from Ireland’s past and present. As you soak in the breathtaking views of the Wild Atlantic Way without the noise from a bus full of 100+ people.

Next, you will be carried away by The Burren’s bizarre moon-like scenery, which is sure to take your breath away. Here, we’ll pause so you can take in its beauty. ✅ Water & Snacks

✅ Private Guide

❌ Admission into the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre

❌ Additional Cost for the boat tour (summer only)

If I am being honest, I am very surprised that the ticket admission to the cliffs is not included in this tour. I decided to add it to the post anyway, as it has exceptional reviews online and is the only private tour that can accommodate 8–15 people. However, if you have a group less than 7, I recommend taking this private tour instead. A lot more is included in the price. We had a spectacular experience made all the better by our guide, Val. He was informative, funny, and took great care of us making sure we had a great time. All of the stops on this tour are interesting, and, of course, the Cliffs of Moher are not to be missed. Highly recommend this private experience which allows for learning more about the sites, the country, and the people of Ireland! – Read More Reviews

For a country that is quite small , it sure does have a lot of places that are worth exploring, from the Irish speaking areas of Connemara , the unique rock formation of the Giants Causeway . As far as countries in Europe go, Ireland definitely isn’t short of things to do!

Tips for Visiting the Cliffs of Moher

💡 preparing for the cliffs of moher weather.

The photo above was taken on a different day. The truth is the Irish weather is unpredictable. All I can say is plan ahead, check the weather before you go and bring some layers just in case. Don’t get me wrong, it is unlikely that you will see snow , but rain on the other hand has a high likelihood of appearing.

It may look like a nice sunny day, but Ireland’s weather is always changing, and you never know when the rain may decide to show up. The Cliffs are also a magnet for windy conditions.

Due to Ireland being known for having 4 seasons in one day. I have put together a packing list to help you decide what to bring on your trip to Ireland.

💡 Choosing the Best Time to Visit

Like most people visiting Ireland for the first time , they want to catch a glimpse of the iconic cliffs. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit the Cliffs of Moher either early in the morning or later in the evening. These times not only offer a more peaceful experience, but they also present fantastic opportunities for photography, with the sunrise or sunset creating a stunning backdrop for the cliffs.

I also recommend visiting during the off-peak season, so, April/May or September October time. This will allow you to avoid the peak tourist times and enjoy a more authentic experience with fewer crowds.

💡 Cliffs of Moher Opening Hours

The operating hours of the Cliffs of Moher vary depending on the season. Here are some general time frames for each season.

Remember, while you can park and visit the cliffs after official hours, the visitor center will be closed.

Winter (January/February): 09:00 – 17:00. Autumn (September/October): 08:00 – 19:00

Spring (March/April): 08:00 – 19:00. Late Autumn (October): 08:00 – 19:00.

Summer (May/August): 08:00 – 21:00. Early Winter (November/December): 09:00 – 17:00.

💡 Prioritizing Your Safety

The majesty of the Cliffs of Moher is undeniably mesmerizing, but your safety should never be compromised. Always adhere to the marked trails and avoid getting too close to the edge, especially in windy conditions.

💡 Stay Hydrated and Energized

Irish weather may be on the cooler side, but hydration is key, especially if you’re walking along the cliffs. Also, packing some light snacks can keep your energy levels up throughout your exploration.

💡  Exploring Beyond the Cliffs

While the Cliffs of Moher are undoubtedly the main attraction, there is plenty more to see and do in the surrounding area. Take a boat tour to see the cliffs from a different perspective or explore nearby towns and villages for a taste of traditional Irish culture. There’s something for everyone in this stunning part of Ireland!

Kacey Musgraves is soaking up the best bits of Co Galway

Kacey musgraves has been enjoying a jaunt around co galway before she opens her "deeper well world tour" in dublin this weekend..

February 4, 2024: Kacey Musgraves attends the 66th GRAMMY Awards in Los Angeles, California.

Kacey Musgraves, the seven-time Grammy winner noted for her hits “Rainbow” and “Golden Hour,” is in Ireland this week and seems to be soaking up the best that Co Galway has to offer.

Musgraves took to Instagram yesterday and today to share the sights and sounds of Co Galway before she heads to Dublin for the first stops of her Deeper Well World Tour on April 28 and April 29.

Sign up to IrishCentral's newsletter to stay up-to-date with everything Irish!

One of her first Instagram stories on Tuesday was from Quay Street in Galway City, which was looking spiffy with Irish flag bunting:

She went on to share more snaps from around Galway City , including the Irish gift shop Treasure Chest, Finnegan's Pub and Restaurant, as well as the Chinese takeaway Nut Hot.

Up next was The Crane Bar , one of Galway's best-known traditional music pubs, on Sea Road.

Musgraves couldn't resist popping inside, where she was treated to a live Irish music session and what appears to have been a masterfully poured pint of Guinness .

On Wednesday, Musgraves continued her Irish exploration with a jaunt to the Aran Islands off the coast of Co Galway.

There, she shared some snaps from Paudy's Ice Cream shop, the knitwear shop An Tuirne, as well as a mouthwatering perspective of her fish and chips lunch, which she captioned "heaven is..."

(@spaceykacey)

(@spaceykacey)

Musgraves then made her way to Dún Aonghasa , where she kicked off her shoes to ground herself at "this ancient site at the edge of the world."

(@spaceykacey)

Musgraves apparently worked up a thirst during her outing on the Aran Islands -can you blame her?! She shared a snap of yet another masterfully poured pint settling on top of a bar.

(@spaceykacey)

We can't help but wonder if the Irish visit will inspire some new music from the talented singer-songwriter.

As it happens, Musgraves wrote the song "Heaven Is," featured on her new album "Deeper Well," alongside Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk "after a night out at an Irish bar," Nashville Scene reported last month.

At the Irish bar, the trio heard the house band play "Ca' the Yowes," a Scottish folk song often attributed to poet Robert Burns

"They [Musgraves, Tashian, and Fitchuk] worked part of the traditional melody into 'Heaven Is,' imbuing the intimate lyric with a sense of old-world timelessness," according to Nashville Scene.

"They even considered adding bagpipes — Fitchuk’s mother is a piper — but chose a simpler route instead, letting the sounds of the city bleed into Tashian’s acoustic guitar."
