You can sleep next to cheetahs and elephants at these UK safari lodges

The eight luxury safari lodges at West Midland Safari Park are now taking bookings

Ellie Walker-Arnott

When you think ‘safari lodge’, you probably don’t think of the West Midlands. But a park in Worcestershire, England , is the new place to head if you want to spend the night snoozing within metres of elephants and cheetahs.

Brand new luxury lodges have been built into West Midland Safari Park’s redesigned animal reserves. There are eight of them and they all have incredible views of the resident elephants and cheetahs, making them some of the only safari lodges in the UK.

Exterior of the Elephant Lodge at West Midlands Safari Park

Six double-storey lodges overlook the p ark’s elephant enclosure, with spacious balconies and outdoor seating offering incredible views of African elephants Latabe, Five and Sutton. The other two lodges are single-story, and offer unparalleled access to the cheetah enclosure from large windows spanning the length of one side of the building, allowing guests to watch cheetahs Azrael and Bappe playing in their new habitat.

Both the elephant and cheetah experiences are the only overnight experiences of their kind in the UK, which actually doesn’t feel that surprising considering the country is more commonly known for animals like sheep, cows and deer.

The lodges are decked out in full themed decor: think wicker, wood, thatched roofs and safari prints. Each is stocked with a coffee machine and a minibar filled with local produce. There’s also wifi and a TV – not that you’ll need it when there’s an IRL nature documentary happening right outside your window.

The elephant lodges sleep five guests, while the cheetah lodges are for up to six, and a stay in either area includes access to the rest of the safari park (and the theme park next door during summer months), plus dinner and breakfast.

Already packing your bags? The lodges are available to book now and start from £171 per adult per night. Find out more here .

5 of the uk’s best safari lodges.

If you had your hopes pinned on a safari this year you needn’t miss out – as you can still get up close to elephants, cheetahs and lions in wildlife lodges across the UK

1. West Midland Safari Park

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Tanzania might not be an option this year but you can still drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and critically endangered Bactrian camels.

To see some of the animals at night – after most visitors have left for the day – you can now stay over in one of the park’s eight new safari lodges.

As well as the lodges, the animals’ habitats have also been renovated, so the park’s three African elephants now have access to an outdoor paddock and drinking pool 24 hours a day. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool, so you can observe Latabe, Five and Sutton as they drink. The two-storey lodges blend in with the paddock as they feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs Azrael and Bappe. A Red Panda Cottage is also due to open in spring 2021.

For more information visit West Midland Safari Park .

2. Longleat

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

Once the grounds of a 16th century manor house, Longleat opened as a safari park in 1966. Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is four times the size of London’s Richmond Park, and home to game more at home on the plains of Zimbabwe.

Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs, African tortoises and the black-headed Somali sheep.

For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4x4.

For more information visit Longleat .

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park on the edge of the Kent Downs. Covid rules permitting, you can choose one of three ranger-led safaris, during which you will see black rhino, wildebeest, ostriches and critically endangered Rothschild giraffes.

For a more intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals once most guests have gone home. The 243-hectare estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style ‘bubble’ designed for stargazers. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with Adras, Oudrika and their offspring on the other side of an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

For more information visit Port Lympne Safari Park .

4. Camp Baboon

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Set within the Wild Place Project, this camp on the outskirts of Bristol is home to lemurs, pygmy goats, eland and okapi, which is endemic to the Congo.

The site has 10 wishbone-shaped cabins for overnight guests, who can help feed some of the animals on a morning tour before the site opens to the public. You can also join an evening tour and rangers’ workshops to learn bush craft skills under a canopy in the woods and around a firepit. As well as entry to Wild Place Project, overnight guests can visit Bristol Zoo Gardens for free, too.

For more information visit Camp Baboon .

5. ZSL London Zoo

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

There are only 520 Asiatic lions left in Gir National Park in Gujarati in the north west of India. While you may not be able to travel there at the moment, you can see a pride of the endangered animals in Land of the Lions, a breeding centre inside ZSL London Zoo.

The London enclosure is modelled after the national park, complete with railway tracks, a corrugated roof, train station ticket hall and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

For more information visit ZSL London Zoo .

Mason Elephant Park And Lodge - Elephant Sanctuary

This hotel is home to a herd of captive Sumatran Elephants, including wittle ickle baby ones (awww). The elephants have a bathing pool, land to range around, and plenty of humans to play with. They get washed and petted by humans and taught neat tricks like painting, maths, and basketball. Elephant dining involves massive amounts of vegetables in a huge pile.

When the humans get tired, they dine on vegetables and meat on plates and swim in their own pools. They sleep in ‘beds’ because they tend to be less tolerant of the elements than the elephants. But humans like a good massage and rub down as much as the elephants, so they go to the ‘Spa’ where they use strongly scented oils because their nasal sense is quite dull compared to the elephants. The elephants play with the humans by performing tricks on a stage, and the humans are made happy and distracted before they go home and back to work. The elephants just lie down in their special sheds and wait for the next round of humans to arrive at the Elephant Safari Park Hotel.

Oyster Hotel Review

Luxury elephant park and lodge with shows, elephant rides, and a museum.

elephant safari park lodge uk

The Elephant Safari Park & Lodge was founded in 1997 by England-born Nigel Mason, who rescued nine mistreated elephants that were living on a rice field in Bali. The English businessman then transported 18 more rescue elephants from Sumatra to the park, which has since hosted visits from celebrities like David Beckham, Jessica Biel, and Julia Roberts. Two double wooden doors at the park entrance (visitors can also come for day tours) lead into the property that’s adorned with elephant statues and carvings. There are beautiful rice paddy views and a botanical garden that has fishponds, patio seating, and canopy beds.

Staying at the lodge offers a unique experience where guests can interact with a herd of 31 endangered Sumatran elephants. A line of elephant chauffeurs, with their manhout (rider/trainer), take guests from their doorsteps every night to dinner. Some guests complain, however, about elephants being chained for certain times of the day (elephant rides are controversial animal attractions ). Guests can ride elephants while they bathe in a pool, watch an elephant talent show, or visit a museum that features a 15,000-year-old mammoth skeleton. The large gift shop sells elephant souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry. There’s also a photo shop to capture guests riding elephants.

Secluded hilltop location in Taro Village

The resort is located on a hilltop, surrounded by forests and rice fields in Taro village. The remote location isn’t in a very walkable area. It’s a 10-minute drive to the closest town where there are a few cafes, a market, and shops. The bustling Ubud district -- with Ubud Market and Ubud Palace -- is 30 minutes away by car (the hotel provides a free shuttle). A car trip to Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Blanco Renaissance Museum, and Campuhan Ridge Walk, will take about 35 minutes. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is an hour and 45 minutes by car. Elephant Cave, or Goa Gajah, is 30 minutes by car.

Large rooms and suites with elephant decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and balconies with elephant park views

elephant safari park lodge uk

All four room types offer stylish and simple Balinese designs, wooden elephant-footed beds, rattan furniture, thatched-roof ceilings, stone tile floors, writing desks, and elephant artwork. Features include flat-screen TVs, minibars, iPod docks, umbrellas, bathrobes, slippers, air-conditioning, coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi, balconies, and elephant boarding platforms. Marble bathrooms have hairdryers, toilet hoses, and lovely glass walk-in showers. Paddy View Rooms do not have elephant chauffeur boarding platforms, but look out at rice paddies. Park View Rooms offers two floors, views of the elephant park, and sitting areas. The Taro Executive Suite has two bedrooms, elephant park views, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a wraparound terrace, a sitting area, a master bedroom with a sitting area, private butler service, a bar with a counter, a whirlpool tub, and a bidet.

On-site dining and cocktails, an outdoor pool, a gym, spa services, and outdoor adventures

elephant safari park lodge uk

The Park Restaurant serves Indonesian fare beside the elephant pool. The Mammoth’s Head Bar offers a buffet, patio seating, and a lounge with a sectional sofa and a flat-screen TV. The Ivory Cafe serves pizza, sandwiches, and snacks. A small outdoor pool is surrounded by palms and a deck with a few lounge chairs. White water rafting, kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking can also be arranged. Night or day elephant safari rides are available. The small gym has modern cardio machines, free weights, and a flat-screen TV. The Safari Wellness Spa features an atrium lobby, joint treatment rooms with dividing curtains, and a whirlpool tub with elephant park views. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking are all free.

You are likely to see the animals from your Lodge, but due to the nature of our wildlife, sometimes they do rest in areas which are not easy to  view, particularly during inclement weather or very hot weather, as we expect our animals to live and act as closely as their species do in the wild. Animal husbandry and health  check-ups  may also mean that some animals are not visible at certain times.

What can I do on an evening, once the Park is closed?

During the evening, you can sit and relax, enjoying the ambience of your Lodge. There is a widescreen TV in each lodge, which displays terrestrial TV channels.

Depending on which Lodge you are in, you may still see animals outside. They have access to their indoor housing, so can come and go as they wish. Whether they are outside your Lodge or in their night quarters will depend on the weather conditions and if the species you have chosen to stay with likes to roam in the dark. For example, our red pandas are more active at night. Please understand that we are unable to artificially light their habitat during dark hours, as our animals need to experience both day and night naturally for their own health and welfare.

Are there discounts available in the Park?

Safari Lodges guests can benefit from 20% off items in gift shops and food outlets. Simply show your gold wristband when you’re at the till and the discount will be applied.

A Guide to the Most Beautiful Green Spaces in Moscow

Izmailovsky park in Moscow

Home to more parks than any other city in Russia , Moscow offers a cornucopia of choice when it comes to green spaces. From innovative wild urbanism to 18th-century royal estates, here are the best places to escape from the city buzz in Russia’s capital.

Spread over a territory of almost 300 acres, Gorky Park is Moscow’s most popular green space. Opened in 1928, it was designed as ‘a city inside a city’ with its own telegraph, police unit and a doctor’s office. Some 90 years later, Gorky Park offers everything from segway rides to an open-air movie theatre, through to illuminating lectures and fantastic dining spots.

9 Krimsky Val, Moscow, Russia , +7 495 995 00 20

Gorky Central Park, Moscow – Russia

As the name implies, Muzeon is perfect for art lovers. The park plays host to art fairs, exhibitions, music festivals and video performances. But even if you don’t care for art, Muzeon has a lot to offer: from an elegant boardwalk to hip coffee shops to an in-ground fountain, where you can actually cool off in summer.

2 Krimsky Val, Moscow, Russia , +7 985 382 27 32

Krymskaya embankment, Muzeon

Hermitage Garden

Opened in 1894, the Hermitage garden is a lovely compact park, nestled between high rise buildings in Moscow center. Home to theaters New Opera, Hermitage and Sphera, the garden is predictably crowded, with theatre-goers along with office workers from the business centres in Tverskaya – all flock here for a green respite.

3 Karetnyy Ryad, Moscow, Russia , +7 495 699 04 32

Sokolniki Park

An open-air cinema, a rope course, amusement park, bike rentals and more – Sokolniki is 1,275 acres of fun. In winter the whole park turns into one of Moscow’s most famous skating rinks. Sokolniki gradually blends into Losiny Ostrov National Park – the world’s third largest forest in a city.

1 Sokol’nicheskiy Val, bld. 1, Moscow, Russia , +7 499 393 92 22

Izmailovsky Park

Moscow’s biggest park, Izmailovsky stretches for almost 3,800 acres. Particularly favored by hikers and cyclists, the forest-like park is a popular family spot, equipped with a ferris wheel, outdoor gyms and all kinds of places to eat.

7 Alleya Bol’shogo Kruga, Moscow, Russia , +7 499 166 61 19

Boat station at Izmailovsky Park in Moscow

Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno estate is a perfectly reconstructed specimen of 18th century architecture set amid a lush green forested area. The only park in Moscow that boasts a light and music fountain, Tsaritsyno draws crowds with spectacular night water shows.

1 Dol’skaya Ulitsa, Moscow, Russia , +7 499 725 72 87

Tsaritsyno estate

Severnoye Tushino Park

Despite a rather remote location, this park is definitely worth a visit. A half-a-century old apple garden, serene views on Khimkinskoye reservoir and a dry-docked submarine housing a Museum of Submarine Navy will definitely make up for the ride from the city centre.

Ulitsa Svobody, Moscow, Russia , +7 495 640 73 55

The riverfront in Severnoe Tushino Park, Moscow

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye Park is not merely a tranquil green space, but a celebrated museum reserve, where nature and historically significant architecture blend together. Here you can see one of Moscow’s oldest churches Church of the Ascension and a former residence of the Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich Romanov, the father of Peter the Great. It’s also perfect for romantic walks along the Moskva river.

39 Andropova Ave, Moscow, Russia , +7 499 782 89 17

Apple orchards in Kolomenskoye (Moscow)

In this park you’re guaranteed to encounter some ducks, woodpeckers, squirrels, hares and urban wildlife. The park is also famous for its beautiful boardwalk, open-air cinema, ropes course Panda Park, gallery of retro cars and a variety of places to eat.

22/1 Ulitsa Bol’shaya Filevskaya, Moscow, Russia , +7 499 145 45 05

Fili Park embankment

The former estate of the Sheremetev family, Kuskovo is a fascinating piece of 18th-century Russia. Home to 20 unique architectural monuments, it is Moscow’s only historical park with a French formal garden, decorated with green walkways, marble statue and state-of-the art pavilions.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
