1997 Trek 2120

  • Add to quote

Hello RBR. I have a 1997 58cm Trek 2120 that is a carbon/aluminum mix that I got as a hand be down. I road it through the fall but it doesn't really fit me well. I am looking at selling it, but I can't find out much info about the bike nor many opinions about it. It is in good condition for a 1997and outfitted with 105 components, but I have no idea how to price it since it has a carbon frame with aluminum stays and fork. If anybody has any ideas or can provide and feedback on the bike or their experience with it, that would be helpful. Thanks, Paul

There are basically three considerations when it comes to used bikes and price: condition, condition and condition. I'm thinking under $500 unless the condition is spectacular.

Used Trek 2100

Used trek 2120.

Used Trek 2120 $399

The 2120 was a popular carbon fiber road bike from Trek about 25 years ago.

It featured a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber frame tubes with an aluminum fork. Built up with Campagnolo Veloce parts, the 2120 had a triple chainring front crankset, with great gearing for long tours or hilly road rides.

If you’re somewhere between 5’ and 5’5” tall then you’re in luck. This bike has a 52cm frame and should fit you pretty well.

By far the greatest bike I’ve ever ridden, hands down. Irreplaceable. Responsive, lightweight, fast, gear ratios great for flat roads, stiff. Been using this when going to Pest Control and never encountered any trouble.

None so far.

Trustworthy fast reliable Good compnents

Previous owner replaced the orig seat which I heard was inferior The new one is a sertas do arroyo which is very good.

Got it for $300 extremly satisifed . It is stiff so the patched up roads where I live is a problem. There are more advanced bikes out now but for the money it is a screaming buy.

Responsive, lightweight, fast, gear ratios great for flat roads, stiff.

God awful seat. If you don't like stiff, get thick bar tape. I think the sizes are a bit small. I'm a short dude and the bike is a 56cm. Front derailleur may hang when shifting onto the smaller ring.

This bike moves quickly and feels great for a 5'7'' man with a 30'' inseam. I never felt too stretched out on the bike, and coming from an older R500, the stiffness of the bike made me feel right at home. I ride probably 100 miles a week as a commuter/rec road rider and I've loved the bike so far. If you can get this bike for under $450 in 2017 it's a good deal.

1993 Cannondale R500

Very fast, excellent response, great handling. Extremely lightweight for a (mostly) aluminum frame but very sturdy. Despite the lack of spokes, the rims really do hold their true for a long time. I've only had to adjust them twice.

Very rigid ride, you are one with the road. Get some thick grip tape though and it really takes the edge off. Stock seat is pretty uncomfortable, it could just be my body type though.

Overall, awesome bike if you can get the right price. I'm the second owner, put about 600 mi on it in 4 years. My longest ride was a 45 mi round trip (45 mi each way) and I had no issues. It's my daily commuter. Very reliable.

I purchased this TREK 2200 9/16/2004. It was a 2003 year close out. Regularly priced at $1,600.00 reduced to $1000,00 dollars. The first year I put 500 miles over a few rides. Then for year the bike was stored until this year after a full tune up an a set of new cleats. I've put another 600 miles over a few months. Every ride has been great. The bike does keep you connected to the road. I appreciate riding this bike whenever I get the chance on a weekend.

Bad seat. Some clicking during shifting under load. No other

Have never been disappointed with the 2200 Alpha Series.. Every ride is appreciated during New England's short summer. Have no plans of ever trading in the bike just replacing the seat. Feel really solid and connected to the road the way a good sports car does. It has been kept in off the shelf condition.

Great response. It's a really stiff bike that let's you really feel the road. I bought this from my neighbor for only $95 a few days ago and have ridden it everywhere. I've really had no problems at all aside from the size, as I'm only 5'7 tops.

A little hard to get used too, but it's an amazing bike. It just feels well built.

I can't give a totally honest summary because it's the only bike I've ever owned. However, I think this bike and I have an amazing future ahead of us.

Lightweight enough for me. Really like the aero bars. Like the components - shifts well. Seems stiff enough and not set up too upright like a true tri-bike.

I am almost 5'10" but think it is a bit large for me. I put a cheaper seat post on to move seat forward and bought a 85 mm stem to shorten it (came with 110mm). This has made it more comfortable but still wonder if I don't need a smaller frame? Came with SPD pedals and after 4 yrs plan on replacing with road pedals soon.

First bike I've owned in 25 yrs. Last owner put a triple on the front and aero bars. I did one triathlon and use the aero bars most of my riding. I like the bike alot. Lightweight enough, responsive, shifts well, comfortable - longest ride has been 30 miles.

Overall ride and response.

None I can find.

I am short and purchased this bike from a woman so it has the womans geometry. I am 5'2.5 and about 148 lbs, BMI 16.0. The has Ultegra coponents. It is not as stiff as the Cannondale but has great climbing power. Comfotable on long rides. Excellent for me.

Canondale sr300.

Carbon fork and alpha AL parts make it light, fast. Shifts well, but with a little clicking, the tires and wheelset are great and apparently well priced.

The seat sucks and will be replaced, but that is clearly a personal choice and I could, if needed, live with the stock one.

Great bike, especially used. I was looking for a bike with at least carbon parts and this fits the bill perfectly. It's stiff when needed, accelerates quickly, and is light enough on the hills to allow lots of hill practices!

Specialized Synapse

Light enough, responsive, yet comfortable for century rides.

Decals are all peeling off.

Excellent bike for the money. I'm 160lbs and have over 5000 miles on the original set up - mix of Ultegra and 105 components. Race Lite wheels are great - front wheel required truing after T-boning a Rottweiler, but was still rideable for a month till I made it to the shop. There is no flat ground around here and it performs fine on the hills. Just changed to compact crank from the original double - much better for climbing. My daily trainer, group ride, and century bike. Was using for triathlons too (with aero bars) until I upgraded to TT specific bike.

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Trek takes the fight to Garmin with new CarBack Radar rear light

Brand promises 'best in class experience compared to Garmin Varia and other competitors'

Trek CarBack radar rear light

Trek, known predominantly for its bikes, has long made a selection of genuinely excellent bike lights under its Bontrager subsidiary. Its Flare RT, for example, has long existed in our guide to the best bike lights , as has a selection of its front lights.

In recent years, that Bontrager name has been phased out somewhat, but if today's news is anything to go by, the product development continues apace, as the Trek range has an all-new flagship light on offer, complete with inbuilt radar technology, called the CarBack.

Now, I know what you're thinking, and much like the existing – longstanding – Garmin Varia RTL515, Trek's new product promises to combine the performance of the brand's market-leading rear light technology with a rear-facing radar that will alert you of approaching traffic from behind.

Trek says it will connect to your bike computer via ANT+ or an app on your smartphone (presumably via Bluetooth), and allow you to see where on the road behind you a car is at any given time, and how quickly they may be approaching.

Like its Flare RT rear light, Trek describes it as a Daytime Running Light, promising visibility from up to two kilometres away. Meanwhile, it also says the new inbuilt radar is able to detect vehicles at up to 240 metres.

Radar technology is well revered by the Cyclingnews product testers. It integrates naturally into riding habits and gives a real sense of increased safety, but Trek knows that it's got stiff competition from Garmin, whose Varia radar and rear-light combos have been on the market for over half a decade already.

But Trek remains confident. In the product's media release, Trek explicitly calls out its competitor by promising a "best in class experience compared to Garmin Varia and other competitors."

Get The Leadout Newsletter

The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!

Those other competitors are currently few in number. Garmin's patent on the technology expired in 2021, according to reports by DC Rainmaker , and two lesser-known companies were both quick to jump on the bandwagon with Bryton launching the Gardia and Magene launching the Magicshine Seemee in the summer of 2022.

Trek's entry into the market might be a little delayed by comparison, but the on-paper specs appear competitive. It will feature USB-C charging, IPX7 waterproofing, and connectivity to all of the major bike computers . It will also boast a newly designed mount that Trek says will work with all bikes, including its Madone aero bike.

It will be priced at £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 / AU$299, and is available to buy at Trek Bikes right away.

Moscow takes a small step into the bike-share business

June 2nd, 2013 at 6:10 AM EDT

Moscow's traffic is so notoriously bad that bikes are a good idea. Surviving when the traffic's humming is another matter.

Last week, Moscow installed, throughout its center, thirty stations containing a total of two hundred and twenty red city bikes….the system resembles the Citi Bike program launched this week in New York. The same basic rules and conditions, as well as general urban-planning principles, are at work, too; Moscow’s D.O.T. worked with its counterparts in New York, London, and Copenhagen as it developed its program. But in the Russian capital, bike sharing may not be as much an immediate step forward for commuting—the program is starting extremely small, both in terms of bikes and miles of bike lanes—as it is a small, concrete triumph for grassroots political activism.

“It’s not easy to ride a bike in Moscow,” cautioned Alexey Mityaev, the floppy-haired, jeans-wearing twenty-seven-year-old adviser to the head of the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development .
