A Tale of Two Peninsulas

A consistent theme of the tour is exploring the hyper-localism of the North End and the parallels to Italy’s hyper-regionalism . Both places are peninsulas that have been conquered by various groups of ethnicities and people over their histories. The North End has always been “separate” from Boston, in that it’s a peninsula with natural and at times artificial boundaries ( The JFK Expressway built in the 1950s completely Balkanized the neighborhood until the completion of the Big Dig and subsequent Greenway Park). Italy is the most invaded country in history (just look at where it’s located on a map; it’s the crossroads of three continents). Geography , history , and food will play equal parts on our journey and exploration of two great peninsulas. This food tour of the North End, Boston will have you hungry for more cultural appreciation! 

The Ultimate Boston North End Experience!

Paula led my partner, parents, and me on a delicious and educational tour of Boston’s North End. So much variety! Restaurants, a lovely cafe, and some very neat markets—one that still looks as it did in the 1930s (if my recollection is accurate). My partner and I are vegetarians, and were easily accommodated for. Paula is brilliant and good-humored. Her background in art history is clear. She’ll be leading tours of the North End’s architecture soon; we’ll certainly be joining her for one of those!

Paula was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and provided wonderful historical context for all of the food we ate. She has far more North End (and Italian) expertise than any of the corporate tours could. She is also extremely accommodating, and the tour is great for vegetarians. I can’t recommend it enough!

We were taken back in time through history and food. The North End has much to offer and Paula took our group to places we never would have found on our own. She is pleasant and passionate about her community and we recommend her tour to anyone looking to learn more about this great community while enjoying some of the best Italian food we’ve ever had. Highly recommended and I bet you’ll love the memories you take from this amazing experience.

I am headed to college in Boston, and recently took Paula’s “Off the Eaten Path” food tour. It is one of my favorite things I have ever done during my visits to Boston! Paula is a local of the North End and is known and very obviously loved by everyone there. She took us all around Little Italy to places that represent authentic food from all regions of Italy. The food was SO good, and we even took a couple of to-go boxes. Everyone that we met was friendly, welcoming, and excited to share their culture and story. I learned so much about the food, regions of Italy, and about Italy’s influence on Boston’s historical North End.

Loved walking around the North End with someone who was obviously part of and passionate about her neighborhood’s history and cuisine. Paula shared wonderful, funny and insightful anecdotes about characters past and present that brought the area and it’s unique place in Boston’s broader culture alive. The delicious tastes along the way were beautifully woven into a truly superb food tour!

It's hard to choose what part of the tour was my favorite. I loved it all. It was just the right mix of interesting history, delicious food, and great local knowledge. Paula is a joy to be with and she was clearly someone who loves and cares for her neighbors and neighborhood. I can't imagine a better food tour or a better way to learn about the North End.

Breakfast Banter

There's a tiny hole-in-the-wall in Winthrop (about 10 minutes outside the city) called Hi-Tide . They have hands down the best corned beef hash and eggs you'll ever find. The chef has been there for over 30 years and loves the Yankees (I know!), and when you walk in, you feel like you're in someone's kitchen rather than a restaurant. It's worth the trip for the food alone, and the community banter you'll overhear is enough to fill a book.

Thirst Quenchers

Café Sauvage on Massachusetts Avenue is complete and total heaven. The owners bring two different heritages to the table, French and African, and you can feel it in every little touch that they've created. And although they make the perfect espresso, don't miss out on the bissap; it's a traditional Senegalese drink that is full of mint, hibiscus, and lemon and so, so refreshing.

I imagine that it's sacrilegious to come to Boston and not have a lobster roll, am I right?! Neptune Oyster in the North End is still the No. 1 stunner of lobster rolls. It's always worth the wait. And the kicker is that you can have it your way: They serve it either cold with mayo or hot with butter. In an era of tumultuous chaos in the world, it's good to have choices.

A Rocking Good Time

The Stockyard in Brighton is a ringer for a fun night out with friends. There's nothing better than an old-school bartender behind a mahogany bar mixing up a dirty martini and throwing a plate of steak in front of me. It's truly the way to my heart. (I'm not a fine dining kind of gal; I'm a little more rock and roll.)

Good For the Soul

Coppa in the South End is my go-to spot for everything. It's dark and cozy. The staff is incredibly thoughtful. The pizza and pasta are unbelievably good and always consistent. My favorite pizza is the Fisherman's, loaded with fried calamari and pickled peppers, and the tagliatelle with Bolognese is enough to mend even the hardest of days.

Under the Radar

Rincon Limeño in East Boston has some of the best Peruvian food in the city. Now this is my way of eating. First, start with a pisco sour, and then let the food flow: mixed ceviche, fried whole red snapper, fish escabeche with peppers, and lots of rice and fried yuca. Wash it all down with Aguila, a Colombian beer, and you're on cloud nine.

Whit a View

Nautilus Pier 4 in the Seaport District is right on the waterfront, so you can see all the action—people watching at its best! Do not miss the blue crab fried rice and the Peking-inspired duck. Bring your appetite.

I think if you took a scan of my body, you'd find that 95% of it is cheese. Formaggio Kitchen in the South End is responsible. It's an incredible shop that also carries a lot of fun wine, sandwiches, sausage, tinned fish, chocolate, coffee, breads, and anything else you need for entertaining on a Saturday night. The staff is always so helpful, and if you're hungry going in there, have them toast you up a ham and butter sandwich while you're shopping around; you'll thank me later.

I tell visitors to stay at The Verb Hotel in Fenway ; what's better than a remodeled Howard Johnson Inn? Fun vibe with a musically hip theme that's literally right behind Fenway Park. They've got a great pool and a fun bar called Hojoko that serves tropical cocktails, and you're right in the middle of all the action.

Boston chefs, 34th annual boston wine & food festival at the bhh.

Give yourself (or a wine lover you know and love) something to look forward to in the new year and grab some tickets to the 2023 Boston Wine and Food Festival at the Boston Harbor Hotel . The three-month event kicks off on Thursday, January 12th and features an all-star lineup of happenings headed by the hotel’s team of executive chef David Daniels , sommelier Nick Daddona , and industry expert Nancy Bean , the executive director of WISE UP Events .

The first weekend will kick off with a Staglin Family Vineyard wine dinner on Thursday, January 12th, followed by a tasting tour of the famed Côte d’Or on Friday, January 13th and then the official opening-night tasting reception on Saturday, January 14th. Other highlights include an evening exploring Aligoté with The New York Times’ Wine Critic , Eric Asimov , a dinner with Sonoma’s Aperture Cellars , which was named the “Cult Winery of the Year,” and a seminar and dinner of “Impossible Pairings” with Opus One Winemaker, Michael Silacci .

A portion of proceeds from this year’s fest will also benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank and James Beard Foundation . 14 Best Spots To Drink Wine In Boston

Boston may be known for having some of the best breweries in the U.S. , but beer isn't the only thing you can sip on in this city — it also boasts some incredible wine bars and many restaurants with impressive wine lists. Whether you're ready to drop cash on some classic expressions of Burgundy or champagne or you tend towards the funky and experimental, there are plenty of places around the city where you can sip on a glass (or a bottle) while enjoying everything from light bites to a complete meal.

Although you can snag a glass of red at a lot of places around town, we've compiled a list of some of our all-time favorite spots to sip wine in Boston. We've chosen these spots through personal experience after multiple trips to each establishment (and to other wine-focused spots around the city). Check the end of this article for more info on our methodology. Head to these bars and restaurants with friends to share a bottle or two, or head out by yourself to explore the by-the-glass options. Whatever places you decide to visit, you're guaranteed to have a good time.

Taberna de Haro

It's easy to find French, Spanish, and American wines at plenty of spots around Boston, but it seems like Spanish wine doesn't get nearly as much love — unless you visit Taberna de Haro, of course. This Spanish restaurant, located in quaint, quiet Brookline, boasts the second largest all- Spanish wine list in the country. You'll find everything from light, refreshing whites that are perfect for sipping on the restaurant's large patio during the summer to bold, tannic reds that pair well with the more red meat-forward items on the extensive tapas menu. And if you're a fan of fortified wines, you're in luck — Taberna offers an incredible selection of sherries (which is the perfect way to start the evening off, if you ask us).

A few wines are offered on the food menu, but make sure to ask for the complete wine list if you want to see everything you can select by the bottle. Staff members are educated about the wine selection, so feel free to ask questions if you're looking for some guidance on what to order.

If you're looking for more of a French-focused wine list, you may want to head to Troquet on South. This white tablecloth establishment definitely feels upscale enough to celebrate a milestone event, but it's also laid-back — you won't feel uncomfortable asking questions about the 45-page wine list, which boasts an impressive selection of French reds. Check out the by-the-glass list, ask for help selecting a bottle, or opt for a wine flight to check out a wider variety of options on the menu. And don't forget to pick something out from the champagne cart, which comes around to your table to top off one of any number of types of sparkling wine . This restaurant has won multiple awards for its wine selection, so you know you're in the right place for some serious sipping.

The wine selection here is worth checking out all on its own, but the food — also French-focused — certainly isn't to be missed either.

This Italian-inspired New American restaurant gets a lot of buzz for its food, which includes plates on plates of cleverly concocted pasta dishes that might give dyed-in-the-wool Italian food traditionalists a heart attack (and we mean that in the best way possible). But the wine list at Pammy's is definitely worth checking out as well. The list skews heavily Italian, with a focus on small-production artisanal winemakers and bottles you won't find on just any wine list around the city. Clean, conventional wines share the same real estate as more experimental pours, so there's something for everyone there.

Even though you're there for the wine, don't sleep on the cocktails, either — there are always creative options on the menu to choose from. Opt for something fun and easy to sip on while you take a closer look at the wine list and decide what you're going to drink with your meal.

After popping in for a snack, you might be looking for something to wash it down with. When it comes to the wine, you can peruse a selection from South American producers, with a focus on natural wines . Make sure you grab something to nosh on while you sip. You can keep it simple with an excellently-built charcuterie board featuring artisanal cheeses and cured meats, or check out the often veggie-forward main dishes if you're feeling particularly hungry. Allergic to the stuffy, sometimes pretentious vibe wine bars are too often famous for? Looking for a more casual atmosphere? Then you have to head to South Boston's Gray's Hall, which glows with strands of multi-colored lights for a vibey feel. The natural-leaning wine list features unexpected bottles from all over the world. It's a place where you can sip on a fizzy Lambrusco, a sur lie Riesling from Oregon, and a classic Sancerre all in one place, which means you won't have any shortage of options to pair with whatever you decide to order from the creative but low-key food menu. Our top choice? A light red paired with the Gray's Burger (which, if you ask us, is one of the best burgers in the city).

Haley.Henry is owned by Haley Fortier of Nathálie fame, and it boasts many of the same perks as its Fenway sister restaurant. Here too, you'll find an ever-changing but super accessible natural wine list that you can order half bottles from, making it an ideal place to try a wide variety of wines in one sitting. At Haley.Henry, though, the food menu is focused on tinned fish and seafood, so it's a good spot to try light, fizzy whites and bold, unconventional bottles that can contend with fancy anchovies and sardines.

The focus at Haley.Henry, like at Nathálie, is on small-production wines, so you may get the chance to try bottles here that you won't be able to source elsewhere in the city. The intimate atmosphere makes it a solid place for a date or a get together with a small group of friends, although the bar staff and fellow guests are friendly enough to make a solo outing comfortable as well.

You may not immediately think of Somerville's Davis Square as the best place to get a glass of wine, but Spoke will prove you wrong. This much-beloved wine bar doesn't have the longest wine list in the city, but it is carefully and thoughtfully curated, which is a nice break from the pages-long wine lists that can sometimes overwhelm new wine drinkers. You'll find plenty of natural wine on this list, but they're not all fun, spritzy, easy-drinking sippers — there are plenty of serious and unexpected bottles to choose from as well.

And you definitely shouldn't stop at the wine when you visit Spoke. The food menu here, which changes on a seasonal basis like the wine list, is elegant and thoughtful and always promises a delicious meal. Choose from something as light as a tagine bean dip to a rich duck fat shortbread — and don't be afraid to ask for assistance in pairing.

Dear Annie has been buzzy since both The New York Times and Bon Appetit placed the Porter Square restaurant and wine bar on their "Best Restaurants" and "Best New Restaurants" lists, respectively, in 2022. This place doesn't offer an average wine bar experience. Instead of being seated at a table and having a server come over and take your order, you'll grab an open seat and check out the menu before making your way to the bar, where you'll order in a fast casual kind of style. The food is decidedly not fast casual, though, nor is the wine, which leans natural. There's plenty to choose from by the bottle, but the by-the-glass list tends to be short and focused, often reflecting what you'll find on the rotating food menu, which favors fish and veggies over meat.

When it's warm out, you can enjoy your glass on the outdoor patio while taking in the quaint Cambridge street the restaurant is located on, or you can hang out in the sparsely lit and undeniably cool dining room, which features communal seating. Maybe you'll meet another wine lover to chat with?

Conveniently located in the High Street Place Food Hall, Bubble Bath is a champagne-focused wine bar from Tiffani Faison's Big Heart Hospitality. If you're always choosing sparkling over still, this is definitely the wine bar for you, with its slightly fancy but cheeky and always fun vibe. You can find everything from small-producer champagnes to a Moet and Chandon vending machine (yes, we're serious), along with a variety of still wines for those who prefer to move on from champagne after a glass or two. You'll also find a variety of bites ranging from hot dogs to caviar, so there's seriously something for everyone to enjoy here.

Like all of Tiffani Faison's restaurants, Bubble Bath offers guests an undeniably good time with serious food and drink in an atmosphere that feels more relaxing than it does serious. Buzzy Mooncusser boasts a creative prix fixe tasting menu ($115) that changes on a seasonal basis, highlighting New England produce. Dinner kicks off with a few appetizers — perhaps a yellowfin crudo with chutney or a butternut squash sourdough grilled cheese — and then diners can choose between two dishes for each of the three remaining courses. Of note, Mooncusser offers both a pre-dessert and a dessert course for an extra-sweet ending to your meal. Asta doesn’t have an a la carte menu, but the six-course tasting menu for $120 should keep you occupied. The optional beverage pairing comes in at $70. 311 Omakase

A high-end omakase with some of the most sought-after reservations in town, 311 is led by chef Weifa Chen, an alum of Michelin-starred Masa in Manhattan, and wife and co-owner Carrie Ko. The pair offer an ambitious 18-course, $250 dinner featuring rigorously sourced seafood inside a studio-sized space located on the bottom floor of a South End brownstone. No surprise that such a cozy spot doesn’t have a liquor license yet, so bring your own alcohol. Keep an eye out for available bookings here .

Lenox Sophia

Owner and chef Shi Mei describes Lenox Sophia as a “casual fine-dining establishment,” where diners take part in a five-course tasting menu that feels like it might be staged in Mei’s own home kitchen. For $99 apiece, diners can choose to go down an omnivore or vegetarian path with dishes like celery root with parmesan and puffed quinoa, and a buttermilk biscuit with koginut katsu, pimento cheese, and red pepper. The spot is BYOB, and you can buy a tamper-proof bag to bring any unfinished alcohol home.

Where to Dine Solo Around Boston

“Arsenale” is the name given to the nightly chef-curated menu at South End barcaro and wine bar, SRV. For $65, enjoy a selection of cicchetti — snacks like arancini, marinated olives, and other delights — followed by three courses, with espresso-pomegranate-rubbed short ribs among past plates. A vegetarian version is available, too, for $45 per person.

Washoku Renaissance

Though Youji Iwakura’s ambitious and beautiful downtown restaurant Kamakura closed in 2020, he’s back in a big way. Washoku Renaissance started as a ghost kitchen and popup, and now he brings his omakase experience to the Foundation Kitchen within the Graphic Lofts in Charlestown in the form of an eight-seat “speakeasy.” Think of the experience as a supper club focused on food — you’ll dine for about an hour and chat with the chef afterwards — rather than a drawn-out meal. Some pricing varies (and check out takeout options and occasional collaborations, too) but the experience usually involves a sip of soup, and appetizer, nine pieces of nigiri sushi and one handroll for $95. A $20 deposit is required at the time of booking and beverages are not included.
