Beyoncé: The Formation tour review – defiant, victorious and glorious The Guardian *****
St. Louis, MO (Tuesday, May 17, 2016) – Beyoncé’s The Formation World Tour has launched and fans and media alike have been blown away by Queen B’s performance, songs and set. Fans are treated to 30 plus songs including debut performances of “Sorry”, “Hold Up”, “Daddy Lessons” and “Freedom” from her recent release Lemonade as well as power hits “Run The World (Girls)”, “Drunk In Love”, “Single Ladies” and more. Massive video screens rotate and resonate, pyro explodes, and everyone experiences the stunning imagery. Following last week’s announcement of 7 additional North American shows, Live Nation and Parkwood Entertainment have confirmed that The Formation World Tour will also visit St. Louis, September 10th at The Dome at America’s Center. Tickets for the St. Louis concert will go on sale Monday, May 23 at 10am. Complete itinerary follows. Beyhive members will have an opportunity to purchase advance tickets starting Wed. May 18th at 10:00 a.m. American Express ® Card Members can purchase before the general public tickets Thursday, May 19th at 10:00 am local time through Sunday, May 22 at 5:00 pm local time. "American Express has a longstanding relationship with Beyoncé and we are thrilled to partner with her again for the upcoming The Formation World Tour,” said Walter Frye, Vice President, Global Experiential Marketing, American Express. “We are proud to bring our Card Members around the world closer to Beyoncé – a global icon and an artist we know they love – with access to purchase tickets for her tour before the general public.” True to her life’s work of always giving back, Beyoncé has named three charities as global partners for The Formation World Tour. The alignment with the three organizations is designed to show fans how easy it is to give back, be involved in their communities, to be kind and at the core—to BeyGOOD. BeyGOOD was launched in 2013 during the Mrs. Carter World Tour as the charity umbrella for Beyoncé’s global charity initiatives. Millions received tangible help, employment, shelter and more on tour stops in North America, Australia, Europe, South America and the Caribbean as a direct effect of BeyGOOD’s efforts during this time. United Way will have a presence on every tour stop on the North American leg of the tour. CHIME FOR CHANGE and Global Citizen will have their online activation program for fans in select tour markets, including Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit and London. In addition, there are three signature charity events in three cities; Houston, TX, Compton, CA and Detroit, Michigan. There are three simple ways fans can participate in helping others along The Formation World Tour: online, in-community and on-site. (1) Online – CrowdRise is in partnership with United Way to support the Flint Water Crisis where fans can make a small donation and qualify for an opportunity to win VIP tickets. (2) In Community - United Way to support issues specific to each local tour market. (3) On-site – by signing up to become a Global Citizen, along with CHIME FOR CHANGE, fans will have a chance to win tickets and upgrades at select tour dates. Additional information visit: Beyonce.com, BeyGOOD, globalcitizen/FormationTour & UnitedWay
To present her fans with the best possible experience at the concerts, Beyoncé has joined forces with THX Ltd to provide the highest quality audio experience during THE FORMATION WORLD TOUR. THX has assessed, optimized and certified that the acoustic systems used at the concerts are without peer. Beyonce's Formation World Tour Was Her Highest-Selling Yet
Beyoncé just completed the final leg of her "Formation Tour" at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey - and according to a report, its her most successful yet.
Billboard Boxscore reports that the tour took in over $256,084,556 and sold 2.2 million tickets. That outdoes the Mrs. Carter World Tour from 2013-2014, which raked in $229.7 million. It's also currently the 9th-highest-selling tour of the decade, standing only behind superstars like U2 , AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen .
Beyoncé released the music video for "Formation" to controversy because of its pro-black messaging in February, and performed the song at the Super Bowl the following day. As soon as she stepped off-stage, a commercial announced the tour, which was set to begin in Miami on April 27.
Lemonade , Bey's tour de force visual album revolving around around an empowering story of a woman persevering her husband's infidelity, premiered on HBO on April 23 before hitting Tidal and iTunes shortly after. The tour began four days later, with DJ Khaled as the opening act.
Billboard reports that two sellout shows at London's Wembley Stadium on July 2-3 brought in $15.3 million and sold 142,500 tickets, making the most successful stop on the tour. Two sellout shows at Citi Field in New York City made $11.5 million and sold 73,486, making it the highest-grossing stop in North America.
Beyoncé also gave a sneak peak at the tour with at award shows. She glided through a medley of Lemonade tracks at the VMAs , and rocked an internet-breaking performance of "Freedom" with Kendrick Lamar at the BET Awards.
Tour promoter Arthur Fogel, chairman of Live Nation’s Global Touring division, gave kudos to Beyoncé for her "rabid, committed fan base." The tour received kudos for its production value, but Bey brought it with her vocals and dancing as well.
“When everybody acknowledges the greatness of the production but, more than that, everybody is blown away by her, that’s the ultimately skill,” Fogel told Billboard . “To not only use the platform of a great production, but to rise above it as a performer and artist, that’s her incredibly unique quality.”
The success of the Formation Tour is also substantial because of Bey's new public dedication to social justice. Some critics thought that the messaging behind the music video and Super Bowl performance of "Formation" would hurt the sales of the tour, and she has received both praise and criticism for her part of the movement, but Beyoncé held her ground. She released a statement about police brutality in July after the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, and raised at least $82,000 for victims of the Flint water crisis by allowing ticket buyers to donate. She is also part-owner of Tidal, which donated $1.5 million to Black Lives Matter and other organizations. All of this, while grinding out the biggest tour of her career, and creating her most ambitious release yet.
Just another day at the office for Queen Bey.

How Much Are Beyonce's Formation World Tour Tickets? Snagging Seats Won't Be Easy
Beyoncé announced her Formation World Tour at the Super Bowl today, and, of course, fans are now trying to find as much information as possible about the tour. If she visits your city, how much are Beyoncé Formation World Tour tickets ? Are you talking about sacrificing a couple of meals out here, or your first-born children? Tickets aren't available yet, but Billboard estimated that they will cost anything from $65 to $350 dollars . It's Beyoncé, so that's definitely doable, even if it means eating cheaply for a few weeks... or months.
"Formation," which debuted Saturday, was the first single off of Beyoncé's new album , and it's already being called an instant classic. Not that Beyoncé needed anything to push her forward, really — her 2013 tour, the Mrs. Carter World Tour, had over two million attendees and grossed over $200 million, according to Billboard . But since then, Beyoncé has been laying relatively low (at least for Beyoncé standards) in terms of albums and tours.
There will be 40 concert dates in all, and Beyoncé will be playing in cities across North America and Europe. Pre-sale tickets go on sale Feb. 9 and Feb. 15 for members of Beyoncé's fan base. The rest of us mortals get to purchase tickets on Feb. 15 (for those in Europe) and Feb. 16 (in North America).
To get extra stoked, here's "Formation." Watch. Re-watch. Get ready.
The first show kicks off in Miami on April 27. Get in formation, fans.
4 Ways to Increase Your Chances of Scoring Beyonce Tour Tickets
The "Formation" singer announced the world tour during the Super Bowl 50.
— -- It's safe to assume that getting tickets to the Beyonce concert might be hectic.
Minutes after Beyonce announced her 2016 Formation World Tour during Super Bowl 50, fans flooded to her website looking for more information about the tour, and temporarily crashed the site. Fans have also been tweeting in anticipation and excitement for the ticket sales to go live.
What does all of this tell us? Getting tickets to the Beyonce concert is going to be tough.
Securing tickets to this tour will likely cause a level of chaos similar to the mayhem that ensued when Adele's tickets for her "25" World Tour went on sale, which resulted in frustrated fans flooding Twitter with complaints over the ticket sales process.
ABC News came up with a list of ticket-purchasing tips to try and help you secure your Beyonce tour tickets with as little stress as possible. Check our tips out below.
Super Bowl 50: Beyoncé Announces Formation World Tour

One of the most surefire ways to secure entrance into a hot-ticket event like the 2016 Formation World Tour is to buy your tickets through a presale. Members of Beyonce's Fan Club the BeyHive have the first opportunity at tickets, with the BeyHive presales starting Feb. 9.
American Express card members will also have access to a presale on Feb. 9, so if you have an AmEx card, or know someone who does, you're in luck.
2) Download Ticketing Website Apps
The LiveNation App has presale tickets for select 2016 Formation World Tour shows starting on Feb. 12. Concert-goers have also noted that they were previously able to secure tickets for events through a ticketing site's app faster than the general website, so make sure to download these apps ASAP.
3) Call the Ticketing Companies Directly
Many Adele fans who struggled with the online purchase of tickets for her "25" tour revealed that they had better luck calling the ticket sales company directly and ordering tickets over the phone.
4) Work in Teams
If you are planning to attend the concert with a group of friends, have every person in your group attempt to purchase tickets in order to multiply your chances of getting through the ticketing system if the websites are working slowly.
Hopefully these tips will help you successfully acquire tickets to the Beyonce 2016 Formation World Tour, as well as any other hot-ticket events you've got your eye on.

Beyonce ’s Formation World Tour has now grossed $210 million (and counting). The first two legs of the tour — through North America in the spring followed by a five-week trek in Europe that wrapped Aug. 3 — generated 1.8 million tickets sold at 40 performances.
After a brief hiatus, the Formation World Tour will resume on Sept. 7 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.: the first stop on a final nine-city jaunt through North American markets that will wrap in Nashville on Oct. 2.

The Formation World Tour launched on April 27 in Miami, and concluded its first North American leg on June 14 after playing 23 shows on the continent. The tour headed to Europe and kicked off with a June 28 stadium show in Sunderland, England. The European segment included 17 concerts at 16 venues, with box office sales reaching $86.9 million.
Beyonce Draws All-Star Crowd to Rose Bowl Concert in L.A.
Reported this week by tour promoter Live Nation, revenue from the European leg earns Beyoncé the No. 1 slot on Billboard ’s weekly tally of Hot Tours (see list below).
Each of the venues on the European schedule hosted the tour for a single night except for London’s Wembley Stadium that drew 142,500 fans on July 2 and 3. The two-night stint earned $15.3 million, the sixth-highest gross of the year based on reported Boxscores from touring artists of all genres.
The best-attended show so far on the Formation World Tour occurred at her July 21 show at the Stade de France in Paris. A total of 75,106 tickets were sold to the concert. (That beats the 55,736 tickets sold to her May 14 Rose Bowl show in Pasadena, Calif. — which had been the tour’s best-attended show.)

Last week, Beyoncé released “Renaissance,” her long-awaited seventh studio album. Fans everywhere are hoping she will announce a tour soon — in fact, some have been preparing for this moment for years.
The last time Beyoncé did a solo tour was in 2016. Mars Sebastian, a freelance writer based in Brooklyn, NY, couldn’t afford tickets.
“I swore that next time Beyoncé went on tour, I was not going to miss it,” Sebastian said.
The following year, she started a savings account for Beyoncé-related purchases.
She’s not alone. On Twitter, there are endless tweets from fans who opened savings accounts to see Beyoncé live, or to be able to purchase items from IVY PARK, her athleisure line that is notorious for selling out .
Beyoncé is coming. By now, you know my motto: Start putting some coins aside in a Beyoncé savings account. It’s happening. — Evette Dionne (@freeblackgirl) August 10, 2021
My Beyoncé savings account is back active… I want a tour!! I need to hear Energy and Cuff It in a stadium! — Daniella3183 (@daniella3183) July 29, 2022

The good news is, saving money for something you love can be good practice for saving in the long run, said Marsha Barnes, founder of The Finance Bar .
“Traditionally we look at savings as ‘you should always be saving money for emergencies and in case something happens,’” Barnes said. “Well, we should also be saving money for the things that we enjoy, i.e. Beyoncé tickets.”
Historically, those tickets can get expensive . According to Vivid Seats, the average ticket price for the Formation tour was $207 , but resale prices were even higher, averaging $353 overall , and reaching quadruple digits for floor seats close to the stage.
Between inflation and the long-awaited return of concerts, ticket prices are only rising. Average gross and average ticket prices for North American tours are considerably higher this year than they were in 2019, according to Pollstar’s mid-year report .
Perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of people with savings plans to buy these expensive tickets are on the younger side — millennials or Gen Zers. Younger generations are saving earlier than their parents did, but the economy is working against them when it comes to bigger purchases like a home.
Millennials own significantly less wealth than baby boomers did at their age. They carry so much student debt that, according to a recent survey , a third of millennials say their loan payments are a “major barrier” to buying a home and 32% of millennials have more credit card debt than savings .
Young people are being hit harder by inflation than older generations, are feeling more economic anxiety than ever, and disproportionately face wage stagnation and underemployment.
So in an economy where homeownership — or building up savings at all — feels so far out of reach, the trend of Beyoncé savings accounts could be an indicator that young people want to save, and concert tickets feel like an attainable goal, Barnes said.
“This means young people are getting in the habit of knowing that they need to save,” she said. “I think 100% this should be celebrated.”
If you’re thinking about starting to save, whether to see your favorite artist or to buy a house — or both — Ilyce Glink, a financial journalist and CEO of Best Money Moves has some tips.
She advises setting a clear amount for how much you need, and then “reverse engineering” the process to determine how much to set aside from each paycheck, and for how long.
“Research has shown over the years that when you write down a specific financial goal, you’re much more likely to achieve it,” Glink said. “So instead of just saying, ‘I’m gonna save money for entertainment in this bucket,’ saying that ‘this is the Beyonce concert ticket fund’ may motivate you to actually put the money in there every single time.”
Glink added that while saving for a concert is a “really great short-term goal”, it’s important to set medium-term goals like saving for a house, and “once in a lifetime goals” like retirement, as well. Millennials are ahead of older generations when it comes to saving for retirement, but Glink said it’s never too early to start.
“Balance is important,” she said. “Starting to save for retirement, you never get back the years you don’t do it … (Beyoncé’s) not going anywhere.”
As for Sebastian’s Beyoncé savings goal?
“I am really trying to save enough to get real close,” she said. “Be able to see her breathe.”

Beyonce ’s stadium Formation World Tour wrapped Oct. 7 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., as an unqualified blockbuster, taking in over $256,084,556 and selling 2.2 million tickets, according to Billboard Boxscore . The tour, which began April 27 at Marlins Park in Miami, averaged a whopping $5.2 million in gross and 45,757 paid attendance per show.
Tour promoter Arthur Fogel , chairman of Live Nation’s Global Touring division, calls Beyonce an “amazing performer” with a “rabid, committed fan base.”
The highest-grossing stop on the tour came from two sellouts at London’s Wembley Stadium July 2-3 that took in $15.3 million and sold 142,500 tickets. Earlier in the run, an $11.5 million take from two sellouts at New York’s City’s Citi Field took in $11.5 million and moved 73,486 tickets as the highest-grossing dates in North America.
The tour received high marks for its extravagant production, but Fogel points out that Beyonce “rose above the spectacle” in her performances. “When everybody acknowledges the greatness of the production but, more than that, everybody is blown away by her, that’s the ultimate skill,” he says. “To not only use the platform of a great production, but to rise above it as a performer and artist, that’s her incredibly unique quality.”

Seeing Beyonce Live Could Cost You
Beyoncé won Sunday night when she announced that she will be going on tour, in a teaser that aired right after she performed at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show with Bruno Mars and Coldplay. First, Bey drops her new song "Formation," and then she announces The Formation World Tour ?! She's slaying us all. Fans immediately rushed to the singer's official website to get their hands on any and all information, causing the website to crash . The search for Formation World Tour details is still on, with schedules and rumors taking over the internet. The reality is that the 40-date tour is set to start on April 27, and Bey is set to bless stadiums across North America, the U.K., and Europe with her incredible performances. While more details about Beyoncé's Formation World Tour are yet to be announced, one question has fans particularly anxious: how much will Beyoncé Formation tickets cost?
So far, no price tags for Beyoncé The Formation World Tour tickets have been announced, and even other tidbits of information are being called into question. The teaser that announced the tour said that pre-sale tickets will go on sale Feb. 9 , with sales opening up to the general public on Feb. 16. However, on Beyoncé's official Instagram page, the singer wrote that tickets would be going on sale on Monday, Feb. 15. Fans don't even know for sure when exactly tickets go on sale, let alone how much they will cost.
View on Instagram
My best guess puts Formation World Tour ticket prices at somewhere in the $70-$300 range. Cheap tickets will, of course, be up in the nosebleeds, but, hey, if you're at a Beyoncé concert, I don't think you'll mind. In 2014, Beyoncé and Jay Z charged a good $300 on average per ticket for their On The Run Tour , so it wouldn't be a surprise if tickets for Formation cost at least $200 on average. (Though, let's be real: Beyoncé was the main draw of that tour, and her worth has only increased in the years since.)
So, if you want to go to Beyoncé's Formation World Tour, you should probably check your bank statement ASAP. The thing you most have to ask yourself is: would you rather eat Ramen for a month or go see Beyoncé? I think we all know the answer.

Beyoncé's Formation World Tour Was a $250 Million Success
Beyoncé's Formation World Tour reportedly sold over 2 million tickets and earned over $250 million.
Image via Complex Original
Everything Beyoncé touches turns to gold.
Last week, the 35-year-old singer wrapped up her Formation World Tour with an insane performance that included guests like Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar. It was an incredible conclusion for an event that was both critically praised and commercially successful. And we mean successful .
On Friday, Billboard Boxscore reported the Formation World Tour sold approximately 2.2 million tickets during its run, and took in over $256,084,556. With a total of 49 stops around the world, that averages about $5.2 million in gross and 45,757 paid attendance per show. The two London shows in July were the highest-grossing stops for the tour, selling 142,500 tickets and earning $15.3 million. In North America, the most profitable stop was the two-day event at New York’s City’s Citi Field, which made $11.5 million with 73,486 tickets sold.
"When you go up [on sale] and sell out stadiums, and in some markets multiple stadiums, it’s big," tour promoter Arthur Fogel told Billboard . "I have to congratulate the great team on our side that does these things, and I congratulate her team, because it was all really well done, well set up, and well-executed all the way around."

Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

From left, Nile Rodgers, Chappell Roan and Diplo are among the more than 280 musicians who signed a letter to senators in support of concert ticketing reforms.
What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?
As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.
Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.
"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.
Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront
It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.
The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.
"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."
"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."
The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.
Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices
It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.
"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.
The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).
Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.
So how did this letter come together, and why now?
NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.
"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."
Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.
The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters
In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.
Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .
For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.
"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.
The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.
