Queer-Friendly Spaces in Barbados Spotlighted by Juran
- Creative Space
Juran Bowen, otherwise known as Ju or Lord Ju, is a law student and multidisciplinary creative from Barbados. His work encompases multiple fields, from content creation for the Barbados festival Crop Over and the entertainment industry, as well as his role as Public Relations Officer at Equals â an organisation protecting the queer community on the Caribbean island.
As a queer cis-male living in Barbados, Juran's work is inspired by his love of community. Here, he highlights his favourite queer-friendly spaces on the island country.

- 3 Worthing Square Food Court
- 4 Donation Nation
â Now this bar is an old time local favourite for the middle class of Barbados, but what this unique space has become is so much more. Embracing its connection to live music and its commitment to providing LGBTQIA+ safe spaces, Mojo has become a hub centred on love, family and acceptance. Itâs easy to get to and the food is really yummy too. My favourite hidden gem here are the deep fried mushrooms, and all the bar tenders know me and my friends by name. â
â Now this one is close to my creative side. Sage Bar represents artistry at its finest as it is the home to so many queer-friendly creative spaces for open mics to performances in the most intimate of settings. The aesthetic of the place is its charm and eclectic atmosphere with mismatched pieces of furniture â from couches to stools to love seats and more; but imagine that all in the front of your cosy old style Barbadian bungalow. You heard right. Itâs run out of the ownersâ house and trust me when I say youâd love them, because they run it with love, love and more love. â
- Food Market
Worthing Square Food Court
â Worthing Square is like a second home to me. Itâs a food truck plaza with about 30 types of food to choose from: Asian fusion, Italian pizza, tacos, burgers, Bajan food (like the real, real stuff), curries and even some Arabian food. Imagine all of that and then add a Mount Gay rum bar with specialty cocktails and bottles for sale, even a three for $10 beer special, and seating to enjoy the cool shade on a hot day. At night, the vibe changes as live entertainment livens up the place. â
Donation Nation
â This is my best friendâs favourite place to go and I knew I needed to mention it because thrifting is both charity and self-gratification. Cheap, unique, thrifty finds with a particular Bajan flair, trust me itâs worth it. â
â Lastly, my workspace. An organisation dedicated to providing safe spaces and services to the LGBTQIA+ community. Now I've got to mention this. Equals hosts and sponsors limes, games nights, balls, parties, quiz nights â all for queer people by queer people. â

GAY AND LESBIAN HOTELS IN Barbados
There is no recognition of same-sex unions in Barbados. Because of the small population, many LGBTQ+ Barbadians choose to remain in the closet in fear that coming out would expose them to the entire country.
Homosexual acts are illegal (regardless of whether they were consensual and done in private) in Barbados, with a life sentence; however, the law is rarely enforced.

More LGBT+ rights in Barbados republic on the horizon, say campaigners
âweâve never had a chance to really determine where barbados is goingâ, article bookmarked.

Greater LGBT+ rights will help transform Barbados as it moves to create a new constitution following its move to republic status, campaigners say.
Prior to the inauguration of its new president Dame Sandra Mason, prime minister Mia Mottleyâs government presented a new charter to parliament which, for the first time, references a personâs human rights as it relates to their sexual orientation.
âAll Barbadians are born free and are equal in human dignity and rights regardless of age, race, ethnicity, faith, class, cultural and educational background, ability, sex, gender or sexual orientation,â article one of the document reads.
Though the five-article charter is not a legal document, activists anticipate that it will influence future legislation.
Donnya Piggott, co-founder of Barbados â Gays and Lesbians and All-sexuals Against Discrimination (B-Glad), said the island nationâs break with the British monarchy will bring about fresh opportunities to implement important equalities legislation.
âThe charter is of huge significance; I think that Mia Mottley and the administration are trying to chart a new path for Barbados without us having to just adopt what was there before independence,â she told The Independent .
âAs a human rights advocate and part of the LGBT community, I think a lot of the laws that exist in the constitution have been oppressive, such as the buggery law which has often been used to justify homophobia against the LGBT+Â community.â
Ms Piggott, CEO of queer travel guide organisation Pink Coconuts, added: âAs it relates to human rights, a lot of our laws have been carried over from colonial rule and weâve never had a chance to really determine where Barbados is going.
âBecoming a republic is a great opportunity for Barbados to wipe the slate and determine who we are.â
During a debate about the charter, Ms Mottley, who is known for her progressive politics, told parliament: âIt is a document that reflects how the majority feel, but that is committed to the protection of all, not just the majority, because the role of a government is to confer the benefits of the protection of the rule of law, the precepts of fairness, on its people while insisting that order remain to avoid anarchyâ.
In 2015, Ms Piggott received the Queenâs Young Leaders Award for her work with LGBT+ communities, attending Buckingham Palace to be conferred with the honour.
While acknowledging the damaging legacy of the British Empire on Barbados, the campaigner explained that though she felt âconflictedâ in accepting the accolade, it had helped to advance the equalities cause within the country.
âAt that time, royalists were a large part of the homophobic groups within Barbados and after I was given this award, people started to listen and engage more,â Ms Piggott explained.
âThey started to think. Given that they had such allegiance to the Queen, Britain and these laws, and were also homophobic, only to see that I was then awarded because of the work I was doingâŚ.it was cognitive dissonance at that point.
âMy small voice was amplified, as an advocate, even more.â
Ms Piggott, who fully supports Barbadosâ removal of the Queen as its head of state, describing it as a âgood startâ, said: âWhile I know that a lot of people tend to reject awards from the queen and from these powers, I think itâs always important to be strategic and think about how we can then use these awards to advance our causes.
âIt was a conflicting move but it was also necessary.â
Ms Mottleyâs administration is building upon a pre-existing framework; the 1998 Report of the Constitution Review Commission, known as the Forde Report, which states that the rights of all Barbadians should be protected.
Nonetheless, the parliamentary debate around the charter, late last month, brought about some contention between the government and opposition as its leader, Bishop Joseph Athlerley, claimed that the term âsexual orientationâ could send the wrong message to adults interested in having sex with children.
This led to accusations that he was comparing same sex relationships with paedophilia; a well-known homophobic slur.
The charter also declares citizens as equal by virtue of âour humanity, in the eyes of the creatorâ, sparking criticism from the opposition and some religious groups who have expressed concern that the use of the word âcreatorâ signifies a departure from acknowledging a sovereign âGodâ in alignment with Barbadosâ traditionally Christian values.
âUntil we have our own constitution we are only a republic in name. This is an opportunity for the people and government to make a constitution that is for all Barbadians,â RenĂŠ Holder-McClean-Ramirez, Barbadian LGBT+ and human rights advocate, told The Independent.
âThankfully the conversation towards constitutional change has started with the charter and constitutional talks planned for 2022.
âBut, through the parliamentary debate on the constitutional charter, we are already seeing some religious groups mistakenly linking equality to a loss of religious freedoms and, sadly, the opposition leaderâs debate contribution had homophobic tones.â
Mr Holder-McClean-Ramirez, who is one of the co-founders of campaigning group Equals Barbados and the first chair of the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality (ECADE), said conversations around the charter gave âa snapshot of how the conversations around the constitution will goâ.
âThe conservations will happen, though, but I fear that this will be a tumultuous year as talks progress,â he said.
âMembers of some religious groups feel that their rights are going to be affected when thatâs not the case; all that weâre saying is that everyone is born free and equal, and everybody has the same rights.â
Humanist Barbados has also called for an introduction of more LGBT+ rights moving forward.
At the moment, homosexuality is not explicitly illegal in Barbados, but colonial-era laws, even if rarely enforced, criminalise same-sex relationships while transgender people have no legal recognition.
Last year, Ms Mottley said Barbados will recognise civil partnerships for same-sex couples and pledged that the issue of gay marriage will be put to the public through a referendum, given that marriage is a function of the church and lays outside of the government.
âThis country, that has been forged regrettably in the bowels of discrimination, cannot want to discriminate against anybody for any reason. All must breathe in this country,â she said.

The west coast â known as the Platinum Coast â offers powdery sands and natural corals, plus the best backdrop for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and world-class watersports. Divers flock to the coast in the summer months for adventures alongside seahorses, sponges and giant sand eels on dives to underwater caves, rainbow reefs and more than 200 shipwrecks.
Breathtaking beaches abound in every direction of Barbados â the south coast is the spot for windsurfing, the rugged east coastâs Soup Bowl attracts serious surfers and the northern coast is a sensational sight with sandstone cliffs soaring straight out of the sea.
The beauty of the isle also goes far beyond its beaches. Nature lovers can take in  panoramic views amidst 53 acres of wild gardens at the Flower Forest, enjoy species sightings at the Barbados Wildlife Preserve, or wander the Welchman Hall Gully Tropical Forest where a fascinating gully â formed by the collapsed roofs of caves â is connected to one of the islandâs most magnificent wonders, Harrison's Cave. For those looking to dive into local history and heritage, cultural sites include the George Washington House, where the future first president is alleged to have stayed in 1751.
For sports enthusiasts, Barbados is home to sunny, world-class golf links and a multitude of sportfishing opportunities. Spectators can also stay busy by sipping coconut rum at The Garrison Savannah horse racing track.
No matter your style, youâre sure to leave Barbados with a brimming suitcase. Broad Street in Bridgetown offers department chains and duty-free goods, the Pelican Village Shops carry an array of local handicrafts and the colorful collection of stores at the Chattel Village promises local fashion and gifts.
Where thereâs a blend of cultures, thereâs an enticing blend of cuisines. While seafood is the mainstay of the islandâs diet, restaurants offer a range of epicurean delights with African, Caribbean, West Indian and European influences.
Donât miss tasting the worldâs oldest rum at the Mount Gay Rum Distillery or dancing the night away at the islandâs best bars in St. Lawrence Gap, aka âThe Gap.â
