The best restaurants in Queenstown: Amisfield

Dine in the light-filled indoor cellar or alfresco, in the relaxed kitchen garden. The dishes are of gastronomic precision, complemented by the dining room’s dramatic backdrop. Undoubtably one of the best restaurants in Queenstown and its surrounds.

This Arrowtown restaurant’s namesake is a city in northern Italy that lies on the same 45th parallel as the Central Otago region of New Zealand – with similar characteristics of season and terroir to boot. Cooking techniques from this alpine region of Italy are applied to carefully selected local produce such as Saratoga Te Mana lamb and Havoc Farm pork, with inspired results thanks to Aosta’s highly awarded chef Ben Bayly. Top-rated New Zealand wines are served alongside the best Italy has to offer.

Boardwalk’s location on Steamer Wharf is as impressive as it gets. The view across Lake Wakatipu makes it hard to concentrate on the menu: a blend of seafood and meats with local produce the hero. Just popping in for a glass of wine? There’s also a well-curated bar menu for those who would prefer to drink in those views, rather than sit down to a full meal.

There’s no ambiguity about the focus of this steak house in the Sofitel complex: it’s meat, meat and more meat. And for devoted carnivores, there’s nothing more mouthwatering than a menu devoted to top beef producers from across New Zealand, Japan and Australia. Add a sauce and side and soak up the big flavours in a setting that rivals the great steak houses of America.

Born out of a love for Spanish, Latin American and Med-style dining, this exceptional tapas bar in Arrowtown serves share plates with local flair – think Fiordland octopus or seafood paella loaded with scallops, prawns and mussels. The food is complemented by internationally-sourced wines, locally-brewed beers and cocktails with finesse.

True South Dining Room

This hotel dining room has it all: views across Lake Wakatipu to The Remarkables mountains, as well as a slew of awards for chef Corey Hume’s food. True South features creative, seasonal dishes with an element of surprise, which allow Southland’s superior produce to truly shine. This is sophisticated, elegant dining at its best.

Eichardt’s Private Hotel enjoys a dress-circle position on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Its dining room, The Grille, reflects the enduring history of the estate while channelling the warmth and sophistication of New York-style bistros. The menu is a homage to regional bounty, with homegrown, free-range and locally-sourced ingredients at the fore. Think hearty steaks, burgers and seafood paired with rich sauces and seasonal greens, or indulge with a full breakfast featuring homemade jams, local honey and Havoc Farm bacon.

The Best Places to eat in Queenstown

Botswana Butchery Queenstown

Reserve a table at Botswana Butchery for a night of fine dining at its best.

--> BY Lucy E Cousins

Last updated . 27 February 2020

There’s more to New Zealand’s adventure capital than just adrenaline.

Surrounded by striking mountains on one side and a serene deep, blue lake on the other, Queenstown has got to be one of New Zealand’s most beautiful cities. And while most tourists visit to raise their heart rate on the slopes, with around 150 bars and cafes in the Queenstown region, there’s a pretty impressive foodie scene to be explored as well.

Breakfast Bites

The bathhouse.

What better way to start the day than with a hot, locally brewed coffee at  The Bathhouse  (38 Marine Parade). This cute wooden building overlooks the beach with spectacular views of the lake and lots of deck chairs outside, and it serves up a mean breakfast as well. The Bathouse Special Breakfast is recommended. If you like it, come back at lunch and try its famous seafood chowder with a local beer.

Ivy & Lola’s Kitchen and Bar

Ivy & Lola Kitchen and Bar Queenstown

For breakfast or lunch with a view, you can’t go past Ivy & Lola Kitchen and Bar.

Ivy & Lola’s Kitchen and Bar (88 Beach Street) on the Queenstown Pier is a little more formal, but still offers uninterrupted views of the lake. Although the menu does change, and is a little eclectic, dishes like the Southern fried chicken ‘n’ waffles with jalapeño chutney, bacon and maple syrup keeps regulars coming back for more.

VuDu Cafe & Larder

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Stop for a coffee and a sweet treat at VuDu Cafe & Larder.

If you’re about to hop on a ferry or head up to the snow, the busy VuDu Cafe & Larder (16 Rees Street) in the centre of town serves up great coffee and pastries. It also does a fantastic eggs benedict and if you want to break the breakfast rules, the carrot cake is ridiculously tasty.

Lunch munches

You may have heard of the famous Fergburger (42 Shotover Street) – make sure you try its namesake burger – but did you know the team behind it also offers golden baked pies and crispy pastries at Fergbaker and the delicious gelato at Mrs Ferg as well? You’ll find both of them next door to Fergburger, just follow the smells (and the lines).

Winnie’s Pizza

For a quick bite between bungee jumps, Winnie’s Pizza (7–9 The Mall) is right in the centre of town. Choose a table outside so you can people watch and make sure you order the cheesy garlic bread to start. It’s addictive. The thin and crispy wood-fired pizzas that are served up here come dripping with toppings and they make for a filling lunch. Not a pizza person? Try their ribs or spaghetti bolognaise.

Akarua Wines & Kitchen by Artisan

Akarua Wines and Kitchen Queenstown

Have a relaxing cellar door lunch at Akarua Wines and Kitchen by Artisan just outside of Queenstown.

If you’re looking for a more rustic lunch with views, Akarua Wines & Kitchen by Artisan (265 Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road) is a relaxing cellar door just outside of Queenstown. Featuring its Central Otago wines and local produce, the cafe is set in a garden courtyard sheltered from the summer sun. It’s a short drive away from the busy Queenstown streets and can offer a little relief from the crowds.

Dinner Dates

The lodge bar.

The Lodge Bar Queenstown

The Lodge is the place to go for seafood, cocktails and beer.

Start the evening with a cocktail or crisp beer at The Lodge Bar (2 Rees Street). A good choice is the Sage Advice cocktails – sage-infused tequila, blackberry purée and lime juice – drunk at the bar, on a booth or near the big, inviting double windows. If you get peckish, order the oysters, clams or prawns and enjoy fresh seafood over looking the lake.

Rātā

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

You can’t leave Queenstown before you enjoy a meal at Rātā.

One of Queenstown’s most impressive restaurants is the elegant Rātā (43 Ballarat Street), opened by Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett and local restaurateur Fleur Caulton. With rich slow-cooked dishes, such as beef rib with parmesan gnocchi and buttered leek, to suit Queenstown’s cooler climate, there’s a reason this intimate venue is so popular. Enjoy your meal at the bar, in the formal restaurant or outside in the sunny courtyard.

Rata Queenstown

Warm up with any of hearty, slow-cooked meals on the menu at Rātā.

Botswana Butchery

Botswana Butchery

Enjoy an exquisite meal beside a roaring log fire at Botswana Butchery.

To celebrate a special night, book a table at the Botswana Butchery (17 Marine Parade), in the pretty little historic Archer’s Cottage. Despite the name, under Hong Kong-born head chef Vicky Wong you’ll find dishes such as Singapore soft shell crab and Botswana Peking Duck. It’s not cheap but the quality of the food is worth the coin.

The Bunker Queenstown

A night in at The Bunker is well worth the effort it takes to find it.

For a post-dinner nightcap, head to the hard-to-find speakeasy, The Bunker (14 Cow Lane). Although it also serves dinner with paired wines in its restaurant, this hidden bar is the place to be for a late-night pinot noir or single malt. Don’t be fooled by the uneventful laneway you’ll find it in, this little Queenstown gem is atmospheric, welcoming and cosy on cool, New Zealand nights.

Nestled in a snug, charming cottage that’s seen its fair share of history, The Bunker is one of those hidden gems where you instantly feel at home. They’re all about keeping it local, using ingredients that are sourced right around the corner and even foraged from the surrounding area. It’s like the seasons themselves are in charge of the menu. Their wine list is like a love letter to Central Otago, showcasing the best flavours this region has to offer.

La Rumbla, Arrowtown

While La Rumbla is technically not in Queenstown, it’s only a 15-minute drive and well worth the trip through those magnificent mountains. Born from a passion for Spanish, Latin American, and Mediterranean flavours, it’s the kind of place where you can gather with friends and share plates that are bursting with local goodness. Think Fiordland octopus and seafood paella with a treasure trove of scallops, prawns, and mussels.

Botswana Butchery

Picture a historic building oozing with charm but with a menu that’s anything but old-fashioned. They’ve taken New Zealand’s eclectic flavours and turned them into something extraordinary. Their steaks are legendary, but don’t let that steal the spotlight from their seafood options, especially the South Island salmon. It’s an icon and a must-visit at least once.

Rata Dining

Rata Dining is a culinary masterpiece crafted by none other than the celebrity chef extraordinaire Josh Emett. The stylish yet delightfully rustic decor sets the mood for the evening. The menu is set and changes every single day, depending on what’s fresh and in-season. It’s like a delicious surprise every time you visit.

They preserve, ferment, and dehydrate right in-house. Why? To make sure you get a taste of Southland’s finest flavours no matter when you drop by. If you consider yourself a foodie, be sure not to miss this gem.

You can’t beat Boardwalk if you’re after a meal with a view. It sits on Steamer Wharf, and the view across Lake Wakatipu is downright distracting. You might find it a bit tough to focus on the menu with those jaw-dropping views. The food is a mix of seafood, meats, and all sorts of local goodness. If you’re not committed to a meal, there’s a bar menu that’s all about sipping and savouring while you soak in those epic views.

Queenstown bound? We have your definitive guide on where to wine and dine

Spectacularly framed by frosted mountains, iridescent lakes and rolling landscapes, Queenstown typifies the raw, wild beauty of the South Island. Arresting and memorable, it’s hardly surprising that this small town nestled in the heart of Central Otago has become one of the most highly-regarded tourist destinations in the world.

Brimming with boutique, luxurious and immersive experiences, Queenstown’s superior culinary landscape is matched only by its unparalleled beauty.

Below we present our definitive guide of where to wine and dine in Queenstown, Arrowtown and its surrounding areas.

EASY EATS…

Provisions Serving up some of the best homemade treats in the region, Provisions is an iconic morning spot in Arrowtown. Our recommendation: do not go past its freshly-baked sticky buns — the best thing since (excuse the pun) sliced bread.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Vudu Larder Located in the heart of Queenstown with seating overlooking the picturesque Lake Wakatipu, Vudu Larder is a wildly popular spot, with a menu of fresh takeaway or dine-in options. If you’re looking for serenity with your morning cuppa, we recommend getting in early.

Good Day Delivering expertly-brewed Wolf Coffee to-go and a selection of brunchy bites, Good Day is the Arrowtown gem that will get any day off to a flying start. Whetherit’s avocado on toast with homemade dukkah, or smoked andouille sausage with peperonata and a soft egg, this tasty spot has something for everyone.

The Chop Shop Quirky and different, with food that packs a punch, The Chop Shop is tucked away above Arrowtown’s main street. We would call it a hidden treasure, but almost everyone knows how good it is, which makes waiting for a table expected (but worth it).

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Yonder The health-focused eatery Queenstown can’t get enough of, Yonder offers wholesome fare to suit every persuasion. Its menu encompasses dishes free from gluten, dairy, nuts, sugar, and animal products and its stone cottage setting offers a cute, cosy atmosphere.

Joe’s Garage While you might have seen various Joe’s Garages dotted around New Zealand, the Queenstown outpost was where it all started. Having quickly built a name for its delicious coffee and hearty, filling food, breakfast at Joe’s never disappoints. And for those hitting the slopes, the bacon and egg buns are also the perfect early morning takeaway option before heading up the mountain.

FOR LARGER APPETITES…

Amisfield Book in for a delicious long lunch or dinner at the acclaimed Amisfield Bistro & Cellar Door — the outpost of one of the largest, single-estate vineyards in Central Otago. Nestled on the shores of Lake Hayes, Amisfield is as renowned for its idyllic backdrop as it is for its pure-tasting pinot noir and hyper-seasonal dishes. It also features an outdoor glasshouse by its exterior fireplace, designed to fit up to six diners for a memorable, al fresco experience under the stars.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Aosta Led by renowned chef Ben Bayly, Aosta combines the culinary philosophies of Italy with the fresh, local fare of Central Otago and Southland. From its intimate setting to the way it executes complex flavours in a simple, unpretentious way, Aosta is a must-visit.

The Sherwood Lauded for its menu that highlights fresh, local ingredients, many foraged from the wider Central Otago region, The Sherwood’s restaurant serves up delicious, hyper-seasonal fare in dishes inspired by the offerings of the land.

Rātā With an interior that emits a neighbourhood bistro vibe, similar to what you might expect to find in Sydney, Rātā by Josh Emett has become one of Queenstown’s premier foodie destinations. Renowned for its slow-cooked food and robust flavours, this is the perfect place for a long lunch or an indulgent dinner.

Fan Tan East meets west at one of Arrowtown’s tastiest eateries. Fan Tan boasts a menu of Asian and New Zealand-Pasifika flavours in a series of fusion-style dishes designed for sharing.

Smithy’s Smoke House What could be better on a crisp winter’s day than sitting near an open fire and indulging in a plate of perfectly cooked, succulent smoked meats? Smithy’s Smoke House (at Millbrook Resort) offers just that. Here, you can enjoy unparalleled al fresco dining under the stars, where tapas and various meat dishes, craft beers, fine wines and whisky are served around roaring fire pits.

La Rumbla Having brought the flavours of sunny Spain to Arrowtown, La Rumbla is a firm favourite among locals. With a menu of tapas-style dishes and European flavours, this is the perfect spot for a relaxed, tasty bite.

Offering premium cuts of meat accompanied by soulful sides like truffle mac and cheese and baked candied kumara, JSH is where we keep coming back to for a cosy and delicious dinner.

Taco Medic A divine collision of Kiwi and Mexican cuisine, expect traditional, hand-pressed masa tortillas packed full of salsa. Taco Medic also shines a light on fresh local ingredients and packs a flavoursome punch.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

With animal hides strewn over plush, fire-warmed armchairs, this restaurant’s exceptional fare and curated wine and cocktail list makes it the perfect place to relax and take in the view.

WHERE TO DRINK…

Eichardt’s Bar Located in the iconic Eichardt’s Private Hotel is the deliciously cosy Eichardt’s Bar. A Queenstown institution since 1867, Eichardt’s has been serving après ski drinks for well over a hundred years. With its crackling fireplace and large sumptuous sofa, this place is one of the undeniable gems of Queenstown.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Blue Door A hidden gem in the heart of Arrowtown, The Blue Door Bar offers a cosy, intimate setting in which to enjoy an after-dinner tipple or a drink with friends. With comfortable chairs and its roaring log fire, after a long day on the slopes it will be almost impossible to leave.

Fork & Tap From its charming, historic location, Arrowtown’s Fork & Tap serves up an array of craft beers, delicious wine and a menu of tasty bites to match. The perfect spot to mingle with the locals and share stories of the day’s on-piste adventures.

Nest at Kamana Lakehouse Take in the spectacular lake views from the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Nest’s dining room. Rendered in an art-deco style and offering modern Mediterranean bites alongside an extensive list of Japanese whiskys and local wines, this high-altitude kitchen and bar is the perfect place to enjoy an early-evening drink.

WORTH THE TRIP…

The Cloudy Bay Shed Take a scenic 45-minute drive from the heart of Queenstown into Cromwell and get lost in The Shed by Cloudy Bay, a whimsical cellar door experience. With tasting sessions of Cloudy Bay’s full range of wines alongside private tours of the vineyard, The Shed is the perfect antidote to the busyness of Queenstown and offers an indulgent, relaxing, sensory escape.

Olivers Nestled in Clyde, a historic Central Otago township just over an hour’s drive from Queenstown, Olivers is an elevated eatery in the restored Victoria Store (an iconic landmark of the region), and is renowned for its fresh, produce-driven fare.

Cardrona Distillery Quiet and unassuming, the Cardrona Distillery has a particular type of charm that isn’t easy to put your finger on. Completely family owned, Desiree and husband Ash Whittaker have worked together on the distillery since its inception and, together with their team of experts, have conceived a number of acclaimed drops, including the triumphant creation of a recently-anointed single-malt whisky. Head along to the beautiful distillery and be guided on a tour of the facilities, where you’ll learn about the processes behind each of the hand-distilled, artisan spirits — including milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation — an experience that will conclude with a tasting.

The Mountain Kitchen – Minaret Station Located on The Alpine Group’s 50,000 acre high-country station (on which is also a boutique accommodation for overnight stays), The Mountain Kitchen can be booked by those simply wanting to experience this incredible property for an afternoon. • 28 Best Restaurants in Queenstown: Picked by a Local
  • New Zealand

' src=

If you’re on the hunt for the best restaurants in Queenstown, let me be your guide. After living in Queenstown for more than a year and seldom using my kitchen, it’s safe to say I have an epic handle on the best places for a budget, mid-range, or luxury meal.

Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a lavish steakhouse dinner, you’ll be able to find it all on this list.

Without further ado, let’s dive into our picks for the  best restaurants in Queenstown .

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Table of Contents

Budget Bites

If you don’t feel like spending an arm and leg on a meal or are tapped out after a $200 bungee jump, these are the best restaurants for an affordable but high-quality feed.

It’s hard to beat the Saigon Kingdom as they strike the perfect balance between price and quality. With unbeatable lunch deals and scrumptious dinner offerings, you’ll never leave Saigon hungry.

The main draw to this Vietnamese restaurant is the steaming bowls of all sorts of phos. They come in three different sizes to match your hunger level. There are also plenty of stirfries, curries, skewers, and even vegan options for any plant-based eaters. And you can’t forget about the traditional Vietnamese coffee and prawn crackers to top off any meal.

If you aren’t sure what to have, start with the summer rolls, spring rolls, and the crispy fried chicken. Enjoy a beef pho with fresh herbs and chilis for a main, with a side of pickles for the table. After a bit of seafood? The tiger prawns are to die for and will complement any meal perfectly.

Erik’s Fish and Chips

Tucked away on Earl Street, you’ll find Queenstown’s premier fish and chip shop, because what’s a Kiwi town without one?! Serving up buttery fried fish and crispy chips, this is one takeaway shop you can always count on getting it right.

Choose from different deep-fried fish and seafood options, or opt for chicken tenders or a hot dog if you’d prefer to stick to land. There’s a veggie section on the menu where you can find chips and wedges galore, served with your choice of sauce or topped with piping hot gravy or cheese.

Perfect food for a day trip or after a long day of skiing, scoop up a $10 meal deal with hoki and small chips. Or, dig into the family meal deal for $30. It comes loaded with two hoki, six fish bites, large chips, and two cans. Who says you can’t eat for cheap in Queenstown?

Taco Medic, Queenstown

For a quick feed, Taco Medic hits the spot every time. This taco stand is hidden away in Searle Lane with a few seats inside and a couple of picnic tables outside.  They have a second location in Five Mile.

Step up to the window and choose from 11 handcrafted tacos on homemade tortillas. The menu is divided into land, ocean, and soil, with creative options across the board. Some of the top tacos are:

  • Ken Tuckyman: spiced fried chicken, salsa, mango, and chipotle mayo
  • Stockman: 12-hour slow-braised beef brisket, chipotle sour cream, and pickled onions
  • Koura: lime and chili prawns with honey dressing and jalapeno radish

The soil section contains all vegetarian and vegan options, so no one is left behind on Taco Tuesday.

Speaking of Taco Tuesday, from 3 pm to 6 pm every Tuesday, all tacos are $5 instead of $7.

There are also a variety of other dishes on the menu, including nachos, chicken tenders, chips and dips, and grilled corn to turn a snack into a full-blown meal.

People walking downtown Queenstown

Fat Badgers

You’d be hard-pressed to find better pizza in Queenstown than at Fat Badgers. Whether you’re after a slice or a massive 20-inch pie, you’ll be able to find it at this buzzing Queenstown restaurant.

They have all options for dine-in, takeaway, or delivery, with classic pies like Margherita, pepperoni, veggie, and even a Hawaiian. They kick things up a notch with offerings like:

  • The McBadger: their take on a cheeseburger pizza
  • The Arnold Schhwarzerbadger: seasoned chicken, prime beef, mozzarella, and a honey soy swirl
  • The Remarkable Bader: topped with sliced beef, portobello mushrooms, and braised onions

What’s more, there’s are a whopping five vegan pizzas and plenty of sides for all.

You can’t ask for more from a pizza place when it comes to ambience. There’s a heated outdoor section where you can people watch to your heart’s content over a cold one. Or sit inside and watch the pizzas come out steaming! Fat Badgers is open until 11 pm on the weekends. If you need a snack after a few drinks at the bar, this should be your first port of call.

When it comes to Japanese food on a budget, nowhere does it better than Hikari. Hikari is great for grab-and-go sushi or a quick bowl of noodles. There are two Hikari locations in town, plus one in Five Mile, all operating under the same concept: a long self-service bar of freshly made sushi. Either load up a plate or pack a takeaway box with creative rolls, different nigiri, and a range of tempura goodies, all for around $2 apiece.

If you’d prefer something warm, there’s an entire menu as well. They have different udon and ramen soups, fried noodles, and seasonal bento boxes.

While the locations in town are good, for the best experience, visit the Five Mile storefront. It’s their best location, in my humble opinion.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Even though it’s not a fine dining establishment, it’s nearly impossible to write about restaurants in Queenstown without mentioning Ferg. While you’ll be hard-pressed to secure one of the few tables on-site, you cannot miss this iconic burger spot.

With tons of offerings, you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy. Some of the favourites are the:

  • Classic Cheeseburger
  • Tropical Swine: beef, bacon, cheese, grilled pineapple, and all the fixings
  • Holier Than Thou: tempura tofu, spicy satay, coconut and coriander sauce, with plenty of veg
  • Sweet Bambi: wild Fiordland deer with Brie, boysenberry and carmelised onion chutney and accompaniments

There’s also a lamb burger, a pork belly burger (call the Chief Wiggum, haha), four chicken burgers, and of course, tons of milkshakes.

While standing in line is somewhat of a right of passage for tourists, take it from me and call your burger in ahead of time. You’ll save yourself a 30-minute wait when starving.

If you’re looking for a slightly nicer dining experience, pop into the posh Fergbar. Order some charcuterie and loaded bloody marys, and have yourself a time.

King Made Noodles

After a long day up the hill, warm up with a steaming bowl of noodles from King Made Noodles. King Made is typically  packed  with tons of people slurping down hand-pulled noodles. There’s something nice about the constant  thwak  from the owner smacking fresh dough against the metal countertop.

King Made Noodles is pretty legendary, not only because you get to watch the guy making your noodles fresh. It’s pretty much as authentic as it gets. The broth simmers with bones and spices for 10 hours every day. In the words of Guy Fieri, welcome to flavour town!

There are different soups to choose from, all with the same base but different toppings. Toppings range from pickled cabbage to pork mince to beef falling off the bone. You also get to choose how thick you want your noodles from seven different sizes.

King Made also has a variety of dumplings, buns, scallion pancakes, and side dishes to complement the noodles. If you’d like any of the above, arrive early because it all sells out fast!

Ben Lomond, Queenstown

Caribe Latin Kitchen

With such a colourful exterior, it’s hard to miss Caribe, sitting proudly on Ballarat Street. This Latin kitchen is known for its burrito takeaway or a quick meal before your next adventure.

Full of intricate flavours and tons of options, choose from tapas, arepas, chimichangas, nachos, tacos, burritos, and more. There are plenty of protein choices for carnivores. There are also vegan and veggie options like the mushroom quesadilla, vegetarian burrito, and fried cassava.

The icing on the cake is the churros and tres leches topped with Mexican Jarritos. For a budget meal in Queenstown, Caribe hits the spot every time.

Mid Range Feed

Don’t mind spending a little more? These restaurants cater to a mid-range budget and have everything you could ever dream of in terms of selection.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

Yonder is where you head for a towering breakfast, boozy brunch, and afternoon beers. Don’t worry; we’re not judging.

With an extensive menu filled with plenty of healthy vegan options and decadent indulgences, it’s no wonder why people flock to Yonder. The patio with sun all day certainly helps, too. Fan favourites include the miso eggplant bowl, fruity french toast, and the pork belly burger, though the menu changes seasonally, so you can always find new and creative dishes.

Aside from the quality feed, Yonder also has the best iced tea in Queenstown (feel free to quote me on that) and has half-priced coffee every morning for those who bring their own to-go cup.

With funky decor, a decent cabinet selection, and all the outdoor seating you could dream of, this is one of the best restaurants in Queenstown for those on a mid-range budget.

World Bar, Queenstown

World Bar is essentially Yonder’s less healthy sibling. Sitting right next door with a patio that rivals any in town, this sunny spot does the best pub food, with the shining star being the dollar mac and cheese balls.

Aside from the crunchy and creamy fried mac n cheese, World Bar does a smattering of incredible burgers, next-level bar snacks, and mains to die for. Choose between tacos, nachos, or chicken and waffles. The one guarantee is you’ll never leave hungry.

World Bar often has live music outside in the summer and friendly bar staff pouring up signature teapot cocktails or beers on tap. Open from the afternoon until late. World Bar is one restaurant in Queenstown you don’t want to miss.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

One of the liveliest restaurants in Queenstown, Margos is always buzzing. The bright atmosphere is brimming with pops of colour, unique artwork, and a seasonal menu that will always keep you coming back for more.

For Mexican lovers, Margos hits all the sweet spots. They have a great selection of tacos, fajitas, and chips and dip, perfectly complemented by one of their jumbo frozen margaritas. The daily happy hour from 5-6 pm is the best time to enjoy their spoils with $7 tacos and $14 frozen margaratis.

Some favourites from the menu include:

  • Three-cheese queso topped with toasted seeds
  • BBQ duck nachos with pineapple salsa, goats cheese, and soy caramel
  • Smoked wild mushroom taco

Another restaurant with a full vegan menu, Margos has insane plant-based offerings like spiced kumara taquitos, cashew queso, and cumin cauliflower fajitas. Everyone can enjoy Mexican food, Queenstown style.

White and Wong’s

If you’re looking to eat at not only one of the best restaurants in Queenstown but the top restaurant in all of New Zealand, White and Wong’s is the place to hit. Recently named the Best Restaurant in New Zealand for 2021 by the Lion Hospitality Awards for Excellence, this Asian fusion tapas-style restaurant never disappoints.

The plates are designed to share, which means you’ll get to try a little bit of everything. There’s a huge selection of dumplings (go for the wagyu beef and cumin ones or the prawn crystal skins), larger plates of stirfry and noodles, and even Peking style duck with thin pancakes and all the fixings.

Great for a big group meal (cue: the Tiger beer towers) or a chilled out date night, either dine in the main restaurant or in their signature cocktail bar next door, Sardines, which also serves the full menu. And don’t forget the wok-fried greens!

Hustl Cafe, Queenstown

Tanoshi is a staple in Queenstown. The Japanese sake and teppan bar is ultra-cosy, with a few outdoor tables tucked away in Cow Lane. It’s another one of those small plate style restaurants, with lots to share, which means you end up with a bit of everything.

It’s not just for sushi lovers, either! While Tanoshi has a sashimi platter, they’re better known for their creative, warm dishes like beef tataki, spicy fried chicken wings, tempura, fried noodles and skewers. They serve up different ramens and donburi at lunch with a smaller selection of tapas. If you feel like really going all in, try the ‘Trust the Chef’ option for a selection of classic dishes, or opt for a sake pairing or tasting for the full experience.

Aside from the location in town, there’s also Tanoshi Iko in Searle Lane, which is more focused on takeaways, ramen, and sushi bowls, along with the new Tanoshi location in Five Mile, which has a little bit of everything.

Pedro’s By the Lake

You can find  authentic  tapas at one place in Queenstown: Pedro’s By the Lake. Sitting right on the shores of Lake Wakitipu, snag an outdoor table and enjoy your meal among the buskers and views of the Remarkables range.

With authentic Spanish food, it’s no wonder why Pedro’s is constantly brimming with people. It’s one of the best restaurants in Queenstown for an early bite or leisurely dinner, with an awesome selection to choose from. But if you don’t feel like selecting from the extensive menu, choose the Trust the Chef option and let them pick for you.

Expect classic dishes like garlic prawns, calamari with chorizo, and patatas bravas, with some Kiwi flavours like whitebait with garlic and chili, a whole roast lamb shoulder, and lamb croquettes.

While a meal here certainly adds up, it’s well worth the cost to kick back and watch the people float by with an ice-cold sangria in hand.

The London Queenstown

Joe’s Garage

For a budget American feed, pop into Joe’s Garage. Located in Searle Lane with a second location in Five Mile, they’re known for stacks of pancakes, huge salads, and classic burgers. It has an old school diner feel with an open kitchen and counter seating. There are additional tables undercover outside with heat lamps to stay warm during the chillier months and a slew of banquets insides, as well.

Overall, Joe’s is a stellar pick all day long, whether you’re craving a huge cup of coffee with a filling breakfast, light lunch, or heavy dinner. Though no matter which time you choose to eat, you’ll be surrounded by families (thanks to the great kid’s options) and twenty-somethings that are attempting to kick last night’s hangover.

Aside from the pancakes, you can’t go wrong with the breakfast burrito, fried chicken, classic caesar salad, or any of the decadent desserts.

The Bathhouse Cafe

The Bathhouse, Queenstown

Sitting right on the shores of Lake Wakitipu at the beginning of the Queenstown Gardens, you can’t get any closer to waterfront dining than at the Bathhouse. This cafe is directly on the sand and serves up a fresh feed from morning until late afternoon.

Grab brunch here before starting your day with an epic selection of breakfast favourites like benedicts, muesli, pancakes, or a big breaky. Or visit for lunch and have a massive burger, oven-baked camembert, or the best seafood chowder in town.

While you may have to fight for an outdoor table, it’s well worth the wait even to just have a drink before moving on to the next place.

The Boat Shed Cafe

There is no doubt that Boat Shed deserves to be on this list. This charming cafe is housed in the old New Zealand Railways Shipping Office, dating back to 1869. Aside from the history and the rustic interior, I think the Boat Shed has the best view in all of Queenstown. It sits right on the lake, with a patio with an unobstructed view of the Remarkables. If you time it right, you’ll see planes taking off and landing at the airport just down the road and boats launching from the marina next door.

Aside from the view, which makes Boat Shed worth the visit alone, the food is nothing short of incredible. While the menu has regular staples, it changes monthly with seasonal dishes using only the freshest ingredients, cranked out of the cafe’s fun-sized kitchen.

While anything you eat at Boat Shed will be delicious, some dishes to look out for are the:

  • Blueberry french toast with fresh fruit, caramelised lemon pistachio and honey, and thyme mascarpone
  • Decadent seafood chowder with pan-fried salmon and caviar
  • Boatshed benedict, which is likely the best in Queenstown

Arrive early or call ahead for one of the highly coveted patio tables, and don’t forget to grab a brownie from the cabinet on the way out!

Halo Forbidden Bite

When it comes to breakfast, no one does it better than Halo. This sweet little cafe is tucked behind St Peter’s Anglican Church, one of the oldest in the area and a neat historical landmark. Halo’s patio is basically in the church’s backyard with plenty of sun, landscaped grounds, and old stone construction to admire, only a block back from the lakefront.

Halo has just about everything one could hope for when it comes to breakfast. The menu boasts pancakes, french toast, eggs any way you can imagine, and the signature breakfast burrito that keeps locals coming back time and time again. On the flip side, there’s an entirely vegan menu for our plant-based friends with tons of creative offerings like a fully vegan breakfast, rainbow toast, corn fritters, toasted muesli, and so much more.

Breakfast is served from 7 am until 3 pm every day, and then you can expect light lunch options, burgers, and a variety of bowls until 4 pm. They also have sandwiches, sweets, and scones in the cabinet and excellent coffee.

Some old-timers in town have said that Slow Cuts makes the best burger in Queenstown, and I’m inclined to agree. Situated in stunning Arrowtown, Slow Cuts simply needs to be included in this list of Queenstown restaurants. Its lively atmosphere and food simply cannot be beaten.

The burgers are the best in town, but if you know what’s good for you, you’ll try the fried chicken burger decked out with chipotle aioli and mango salsa, with a side of fried smashed potatoes. Other stellar offerings include:

  • Smoked brisket sandwich
  • Rotisserie chickens: choose from a quarter, half or whole, and make it a combo for some sides
  • Any of the steaks

Additionally, there are plenty of kid’s options and sweet finishes that you won’t be able to skip, no matter how full you are. Chocolate fudge brownie, anyone?

For Malaysian food done right, Madam Woo is everything and more. This upscale Southeast Asian restaurant is bursting with authentic flavours and high-quality cuisine.

The menu changes seasonally, but you’ll always be able to find a variety of hawker rolls, satay platters, and big Malaysian dishes like rendang, laksa, nasi lemak. Service is exceptional, and the tap beers flow freely, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a Malaysian food market.

Madam Woo is right on Ballarat Street in the middle of all the action. It’s the perfect pit stop before a big night out on the town.

Mandarin Seafood Restaurant

I hunted for good Chinese food for  ages  before finding the Mandarin Seafood Restaurant – easy to miss but truly unforgettable. This huge, authentic Chinese restaurant sits above Beach Street and is everything you could ask for when it comes to feasting. The back wall is lined with fish tanks, where you can choose your very own crayfish, and the opposite wall is filled with windows for one of the best views of Lake Wakitipu and the Remarkables.

While everything on the huge menu is exceptional, the wonton soup, mapo tofu, and spicy braised eggplant with pork are the go-tos. Other dishes include Western favourites like egg foo young, sweet and sour chicken, BBQ pork spareribs, and lots of different stirfries. Opt for the crispy roast duck, Chinese cabbage, and a whole fish for more traditional plates or check out the entire Sichuan section (if you can handle the heat).

It’s not super inexpensive, but the portions are  huge  and great for sharing. It’s all worth it when you factor in the million-dollar view.

Luxury Fine Dining

Not to sound dramatic, but Queenstown has some life-changing fine dining. For the best meal you could ever imagine, dip into some of these pricier restaurants for a luxurious experience. Trust me – they are well worth it.

Gyoza at Tanoshi, Queenstown

If you’re hankering for a fine cut of meat or lavish dining experience in general, Botswana Butchery should be your first port of call. While it’s likely the most expensive restaurant in Queenstown, the food here will never disappoint. The upscale atmosphere and top-notch service tie the restaurant together to bring Queenstown a fine dining restaurant that rivals that of large global cities.

Botswana Butchery is a classic steakhouse with a Kiwi twist, offering a large selection of New Zealand and Australian meats from the butcher block, extravagant main dishes, and a large selection of creative starters.

Choose from plates of Fijian yellowfin tuna tataki, Botswana Peking duck, wild Fiordland red deer tartar, or a half roasted honey glazed quail to start. Move onto your choice of merino lamb, high-end beef cut, or beautifully prepared fish, and finish off with mouthwatering sauces and sides like Wagyu beef fat braised carrots, potato puree, and chicken gravy, or macaroni and cheese with bacon.

Visit for lunch and chow down on oysters paired with prosecco on the terrace with a view of the lake.

Rata is where you go for a true fine dining experience. New head chef Michael Bickford has mastered his craft, creating unique dishes that are nothing short of extravagant and centred around the freshest New Zealand produce available. The restaurant works with small farmers and producers across Otago and the South Island to keep the ingredients seasonal, many of which are harvested by the chefs themselves.

Bickford has brought the menu a fresh update inspired by his Kiwi upbringing with dishes like kingfish Crudo cured in elderflower vinegar with apple and hemp seed and a classic Southland cheese roll upgraded with Speights mustard, cornichon jam, and fried yeast. Other favorites include:

  • Cloudy Bay clams soaked in seaweed butter – a long-standing staple of the Rata menu:
  • Goats cheese profiteroles
  • Asparagus with stracciatella
  • Havoc farm pork with broad beans
  • Black origin Wagyu – which may just be the very best steak you ever eat

Rata is lots of small plates designed for sharing, so you’ll get a bit of everything if you dine in. On the weekends, they serve a three-course lunch, which is a top way to enjoy the best of Rata on a budget.

As you head out of town towards Arrowtown, you’ll begin to hit some of Otago’s finest wineries, complete with five-star restaurants. Amisfield is one such winery and well worth the splurge.

Offering an ultra seasonal dining experience, the chefs at Amisfield create gorgeous dishes. They use local New Zealand produce that simply cannot be matched. Lunch is served from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30 am and is best enjoyed in the sunny garden with water features and rolling hills behind. If you’d instead visit for dinner, it’s served on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the week features a small plate menu which is just as good as the real thing.

While the menu is constantly changing, expect fresh charcuterie, a selection of seafood (even crayfish, if you’re lucky), freshly foraged greens, and the most beautiful presentation imaginable.

Eating here costs a pretty penny, especially when you dip into the wine (a must), but it’s incredible for special occasions or if you feel like balling out a bit.

Tatsumi, Queenstown

You can expect elevated Japanese food from Tatsumi. Sitting up above Beach Street, Tatsumi is filled with plush couches and cushy banquets for a dining experience that’s as comfortable as it is delicious. The elegant interior draws you in, and the staff in traditional Japanese dress makes you feel as if you’ve touched down in Japan.

Tatsumi has so much more than sushi. They boast a modern menu with both local and Japanese ingredients and a contemporary take on fine dining. Start with pan-seared Hokkaido scallops and grilled king prawn skewers served in a shot glass atop a croquette. Then, move on to fresh sashimi, Japanse taro gnocchi, and black origin wagyu.

But the best way to enjoy Tatsumi is with the 12-course banquet menu for $85 per person to try it all.

Bella Cucina

When it comes to a heaping bowl of pasta or a wood-fired pizza, you’ll find no better restaurant in Queenstown than Bella Cucina. With a menu that changes  daily,  you can always expect something fresh and delicious at this warm Italian spot.

Expect classic Italian fare like bruschetta, Caprese, carpaccio, and olives, spaghetti bolognese, carbonara, and conchiglie brimming with fresh veggies. There are five rotating pizzas to choose from, a signature calzone, and an assortment of mains like risotto and gnocchi. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt to Trust the Chef for $65 per person and eat like royalty.

Everything is handmade at Bella, from the pasta to the pizza dough, offering an authentic experience you won’t find anywhere else in Queenstown.

While there are several steakhouses in Queenstown to choose from, the most classic (and likely the priciest) is Jervois. Sitting upstairs on Duke Street above Sofitel, you’ll find a massive selection of beautifully cut steaks from New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.

Beef is undoubtedly the main draw of this Queenstown restaurant. That said, you’ll find plenty of fresh seafood like oysters, king crab, prawns, alpine salmon, and yellowfin tuna.

Finish off the meal with steakhouse sides including truffle bacon mac ‘n’ cheese, potatoes a dozen ways, or creamed spinach. They also have a towering dessert. It doesn’t get much better than this.

23 BEST Restaurants in Queenstown in 2024

Queenstown is 100% the coolest town in New Zealand.  No matter where you look, you will see beautiful scenery, with great restaurants and bars all along the waterfront and live entertainment at any time of the day.

Most people visiting Queenstown have limited time (usually only a few days), and with so much to choose from, you want to make the most out of each and every meal.

We decided to compile a list of the best restaurants in Queenstown so you don’t have to worry about what’s good (and what’s not so good). Of course, to do that we had to eat at a lot of restaurants – including every single place on this list, some more than once – so you know they’re all amazing!

Fine Dining Queenstown

Mid-range queenstown restaurants, queenstown cheap eats (< $15), 1. nest kitchen & bar at kamana.

The Best Restaurant With a View in Queenstown

Nest Kitchen & Bar at Kamana has the most unforgettable views of any restaurant we’ve ever visited. So much so, that we recommend timing your meal around sunset and popping outside for a few pics between courses.

But it’s also more than just a great view. The meals we’ve had here on multiple occasions were memorable to say the least – it’s clear the chefs know what they’re doing. And if you’re looking for vegan or vegetarian options, you’ll have less choices but you can trust that the ones on the menu will be delectable.

The drinks menu is also impressive, with an awesome range of delicious and interesting G&Ts, as well as a great selection of New Zealand wines.

The decor is beautiful and modern, with a cosy vibe in winter thanks to fireplaces hanging from the ceiling. Kamana is also a hotel and it’s definitely one of the best hotels in Queenstown .

Nest Kitchen & Bar is one of the best restaurants we’ve ever visited and we recommend it to all our friends.

The Best Food

Set up by NZ-famous chef, restaurateur and masterchef judge Josh Emett, you know the food at Rata is going to be good before you set foot in the door. Although no longer working here, the food hasn’t fallen back and is still at the high standards it always was.

The dinner menu here is colourful with a wide and eclectic range of the staples – duck breast, blue cod, scotch fillet and of course lamb shoulder.

Rata is a great option for an amazing meal that speaks to the flavours of New Zealand.

3. Botswana Butchery

A Fine Dining Staple

Botswana Butchery is renowned as the epitome of fine dining in Queenstown.  The decor is beautiful and the atmosphere warm (nice on a cold day in Queenstown), with perfect service from the friendly staff.

As to be expected, the food was amazing.  Meat is their specialty, but you really can’t go wrong ordering anything.  We recommend starting with some Bluff Oysters, the lamb as a main and some duck fat potatoes as a side.  And working your way through the Pinot Noir list if you’re into wine.

Prices are high, but we’re believers in treating yourself every once in a while – so make sure to head on down to celebrate something and enjoy one of the best culinary experiences in Queenstown. Botswana Butchery is definitely one of the best restaurants in Queenstown.

4. Blue Kanu

We’d heard amazing reviews for Blue Kanu for years before we finally made it, and it turns out everything we had heard was true.

The restaurant has a Pacific / Asian fusion cuisine which makes it, in our opinion, one of the most unique restaurants in Queenstown and the only one of its kind we’ve heard of in New Zealand. The decor aligns nicely with the Pacific / Asian theme, which we can best describe as sultry and comfy.

From what we can tell, you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes on the Blue Kanu menu, however we would recommend their fresh seafood. Our top picks from the dinner menu are Fijian market fish kokoda, charcoal goat rendang and whole Rakiura tarakihi.

The table next to us ordered the ‘just feed me’ option for dinner and we watched them receive an endless stream of delicious dishes – we might try this next time!

Despite some pretty sub-par service (which they informed us was due to staff shortages), Blue Kanu will now be our go to place when we’re looking for a great Queenstown restaurant.

5. Paddy Gaddy

The Southeast Asian Fusion Restaurant

Man, we’ve been missing southeast Asia ever since we had to return at the start of Covid. So booking a table at Paddy Gaddy was an easy choice for us.

The cuisine here is a delicious southeast Asian fusion of flavours. Expect sweet, salty and sour flavours to dominate the dishes. We recommend ordering the lamb ribs for a main course, they’re incredible. As is the wine list and cocktail menu. They also have some good seafood on the menu to try out.

If you’re on a budget, it also pays to check out First Table where you might be able to grab 50% off your meal – but take a look a week ahead. If you’re planning your trip to New Zealand and you need access to the internet then make sure to check out this guide to the best tourist sim cards in New Zealand .

6. Joe’s Garage

The Best Brunch in Queenstown

A little harder to find, Joe’s Garage is tucked away down an alleyway in the heart of Queenstown’s busy city center. The vibe here is super laid back and chill with an American diner-esque design.

Similarly, the menu is simple and straightforward, with poached eggs not an option and sandwiches taking center stage. But don’t be mistaken, these are thick sandwiches and they’ll blow your mind, far more than a simple eggs benedict would.

Grab a roll (we recommend the Spicy Bratwurst), a coffee and share a plate of JFC. You won’t find a better brunch anywhere.

7. The Sherwood Cafe

The Workplace

We popped over here for one reason – parking. It’s always hard to find a park in town and sometimes you don’t want to walk 10-minutes in the rain, so we thought we’d try out the Sherwood Cafe as it’s located just outside of the city center.

Well, unfortunately their kitchen closes from 11-12 (we thought this was a bit stupid, but we were hangry) so we didn’t get a chance to try the food, but the coffee was awesome and came super quick. Plus the staff were way too nice!

The key thing about the Sherwood was how cosy we found it. With large wooden tables, rugs and blankets, a fire and just an overall log cabin vibe we loved hanging here. Definitely worth a visit on a chilly winter morning.

We’ve now been back a handful of times and have managed to have breakfast here and it was delicious. This Queenstown restaurant uses local produce alongside a seasonal menu to whip together some simple but awesome dishes.

8. The Bathhouse Cafe

A Historic Lakefront Cafe

This historical cafe opened in 1911 and can be easily recognised by its impressive architecture.  The Bathhouse Cafe is a super cute, vintage cafe and bar located right on the waterfront of Lake Wakatipu.

When you walk in off the street the heat is turned up and there is a cosy vibe to the place.  You look out the window and Lake Wakatipu is just a few steps away. Grab yourself a hot chocolate, a coffee or a Central Otago wine, and just watch the view.

If the weather’s warm enough, we love to sit outside by the water and we recommend you give it a shot too.  They have a great brunch menu, as well as a cabinet filled with delicious treats.

If scenic views are what you are looking for while you eat, then this is the best Queenstown Restaurant for you.

The best restaurant with a view in Queenstown, The Bath house Cafe.

9. Winnie’s Gourmet Pizza

The Best Italian Restaurant & Pizza in Queenstown

We walked past Winnie’s three times, and each time we looked at it and thought it was the cutest restaurant in Queenstown.  There’s a cute little balcony that looks out over the street. We could only imagine sitting here and looking out at all the busy people walking below.

The atmosphere at Winnie’s is warm and friendly.  The pizzas come in an unusual variety of flavours which gives a new twist on food which we’ve all had a million times – delicious pizza!  Make sure you try the Tandoori chicken and the Moroccan lamb pizzas.

Despite the cute atmosphere here, our favourite thing to do is to take away and head down to the waterfront for a picnic.

Although Winnie’s didn’t quite make it into the Queenstown cheap eats, the price isn’t quite as bad as it looks.  At $38.75 NZD, the large pizza will be enough for two to eat for dinner, possibly with a slice or two left over. Not bad for a Queenstown restaurant.

The best restaurant for pizza in Queenstown, Winnie's.

The Best Coffee

Recently, Queenstown has become home to numerous amazing cafes. We tend to seek out the best ones, especially for a good cup of coffee and a great vibe.

Yonder has beautiful decor and is located right in the heart of town so it’s the perfect place to grab a quick coffee or sit down for a chat.

The cabinet food here is also great for a bite to eat.

11. Pedro’s House of Lamb & Pedro’s by the Lake

The Best Lamb in Queenstown

New Zealand’s renown for lamb appears to be somewhat linked to the fact that we have significantly more sheep than humans.  Despite this, the lamb from Pedro’s truly is something special.

Call them up and place an order to be picked up.

What you’ll get is the best 100% locally sourced lamb, slow-cooked for hours with garlic and rosemary, and complemented with delicious roast potatoes.

This is our favourite place to get lamb in Queenstown, avoid the overly-tourist focussed restaurants along the waterfront and pick yours up from Pedro’s.  You can always take it down to the waterfront and eat it picnic-style. It’s better than guiltily eating it in your hostel whilst everyone is watching.

Also, they’ve since opened a restaurant called Pedro’s by The Lake. We’ve finally had a chance to try it and its definitely deserving of a spot on this list of the best Queenstown Restaurants.

The restaurant itself is fairly average, but it’s located in a great spot next to the lake (in fact it’s now called Pedro’s by the Lake).

Don’t bother ordering the tapas. Skip straight to either the pulled lamb or the slow roast lamb shoulder. Their staples are lamb, minted peas and roast potatoes so stick to these and you’ll be impressed.

12. Toro Kitchen

Sadly, it looks like Toro Kitchen has since closed, but luckily Paddy Gaddy is now in its place.

We were drawn in by the modern design of the interior at Toro Kitchen, with their tables sprawling out into the street. It’s the perfect location to relax and people watch as the world goes by around you.

The food here is immaculate, with prices on the higher end around $30 NZD to $40 NZD.  The service is lovely and friendly and the dinner menu is extensive.

If you are a budget-conscious traveller, check out the website First Table to get 50% off your food bill here for the first table of the night.  For cheap drinks, also check out their happy hour for half-priced cocktails.

Queenstown restaurants.

Although not all strictly restaurants, Queenstown has plenty of good food for cheap. Whether for lunch or dinner, you don’t need to visit fine dining to get a great meal.

13. Ferg Burger

Best Burgers in Queenstown

Over the past 20 years, Ferg Burger has grown from a backstreet burger shop to become the most popular restaurant in Queenstown.  And for a good reason. Not only do they make possibly the best burgers in the world (at least certainly in New Zealand), but you can buy one for under $15 NZD!

This makes this Queenstown institution not only one of the cheapest places to eat in Queenstown, but also one of the biggest and most enjoyable meals you can find.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Classic Fergburger with cheese, but you should make an effort to try as many different burgers as you can during your stay in Queenstown.  Trust us, when you get back home and reminisce of the burger you once had back in New Zealand, you will regret not eating another.

If you have heard of Ferg Burger, then it is likely you have also heard about the queues.  They basically go for miles as hundreds of desperate tourists mill around the shop like a swarm of bees.  So we wanted to offer the number one tip of this blog post:

Call ahead.

Seriously.  Here’s their number:  03 441 1232.

Give them a ring – sometimes it’s hard to get through – and place your order over the phone.  You’ll turn up 15 minutes later, bound past the queue, pay, and walk away with your burger in hand.

If you can wait a few minutes longer, make your way down to the waterfront and eat it on the grass.  You’ll usually have live music from one of the buskers. Eating a Ferg Burger with a glass of Central Otago wine from one one of the wineries in Queenstown is amongst our favourite things to do in Queenstown .

14. Ferg Baker

Best Queenstown Bakery

I’m not sure if there is a day we’ve spent in Queenstown without going to Ferg Baker.  It’s just that good. The pies are out of this world. I’ve eaten a lot of pies (most of them a lot cheaper to be fair), and Ferg Baker’s pork belly pie wins every time.

Our favourite way to start the day is to stop by Ferg Baker, grab a pie, a coffee (they have great baristas too) and a delicious pizza bread to snack on for morning tea, before heading out on a hike or hitting the Queenstown ski fields .

The best part about Ferg Baker is that there is rarely a queue.  It doesn’t appear to have the popularity of Ferg Burger, plus the food here isn’t made to order, so you can usually pop in and out in a few minutes.

The best bakery in Queenstown, Ferg baker.

15. Taco Medic

Hands Down Best Tacos in Queenstown

Living in New Zealand, we’ve struggled to find a good taco – even in Auckland. So we were surprised to find the best tacos of our life here in Queenstown. And to make it even better, the owner told us they’re opening a restaurant in Auckland!

All of the tacos on the menu are good and don’t forget to slather on their delectible, housemade chilli sauces. 1-2 are a great snack or light meal under $15 (they are $7 each), or grab 3-4 for a filling meal.

16. Patagonia Chocolate

Best Gelato in Queenstown

It has always baffled us how gelato is such a big deal in Queenstown.  Even in the middle of summer you wouldn’t exactly call the weather in Queenstown tropical.  Despite this, everyone flocks to the numerous gelato stores (there’s even a cart) to get their gelato fix.

We are no exception – irrespective of the temperature, gelato is yum and we’re going to try all the flavours.  Each place was great in their own ways, but Patagonia Chocolate was our favourite.

You can’t go wrong as all the flavours here are great, but our favourites are vanilla & cookies and tramontana.  But you may as well just ask to try a few, then keep trying until you’ve tried all the flavours you were interested in. That’s what we did!

Don’t forget to try their hot chocolate.  Definitely the best in Queenstown.

17. Empanada Kitchen

Sadly, it looks like Empanada Kitchen is now closed

The Empanada Kitchen sells beautifully rolled empanadas out of what appears to be a well-branded cleaning closet attached to the public bathrooms.  The menu changes daily serving a different filling encased in a delicious, buttery casing.

These little pockets of joy are $5.50 NZD, making them the perfect street food treat for a stroll around Lake Wakatipu.  Sadly, they close their doors quite early, so don’t plan for a late night snack.

Must eat budget snacks from the Empanada Kitchen in Queenstown.

18. Hikari Sushi

Best Queenstown Sushi

Hikari Sushi Bar serves up great sushi.  It’s definitely on the pricier side, but that’s what you get when no one else opens another sushi bar in Queenstown.

Regardless, it sneaks in under $15 NZD (as long as you aren’t starving), and you definitely get some fantastic sushi with fresh seafood in generous portion sizes.  It’s worth checking out when you’re craving something healthier for lunch, perhaps on day five of your trip after eating Ferg burgers every other day.

Also, check out their Japanese restaurant in Queenstown for a great Japanese dine-in experience.

Hikari Sushi Bar in Queenstown.

19. Cookie Time Cookie Bar

Best Happy Hour

The warm cookies here are amazing.  But at full price, it’s a bit of a tourist trap.  Luckily, the Cookie Time Cookie Bar runs the best happy hour in Queenstown:

8 am to 9 am – $1 NZD coffees & hot chocolates

6 pm to 7 pm – Buy one get one free hot cookies

In fact, they run two happy hours.  And surprisingly, the coffee actually wasn’t too bad.  For $1 NZD, it’s well worth it to get your day started.

The two-for-one hot cookies are where it’s at.  This is why Cookie Time has earned a spot as one of the best places to eat in Queenstown.  Make your way down and make sure to grab yourself eight cookies (for the price of four!).

Cookie Time Cookie Bar in Queenstown.

20. The Bakery

The Cheapest Queenstown Baker

For a long time, Ferg Baker across the road has been our favourite bakery.  One day we pulled up in a park next to The Bakery and thought we should take a look.  We ended up walking out with two pies and an almond croissant – for the same price as two pies at Ferg Baker.  So it was a bit cheaper.

All-in-all, the pies were fantastic and the almond croissant was delicious.  It’s just a pity that Ferg Baker is across the road, as the pies at Ferg Baker are the best pies we’ve ever eaten.  And we eat a lot of pies.

Although not a restaurant, the Bakery is definitely worth checking out, and you’ll be able to save a few dollars over Ferg Baker.

21. Little Blackwood

Best Bar in Queenstown

Although not really known for their food, Little Blackwood has the best cocktails we’ve found in Queenstown. The Japanese Garden is an incredible deal during happy hour at just $12, plus they have a massive cocktail menu including numerous takes on the espresso martini.

Beyond just cocktails they have an extensive beer and wine menu, not a bad spot to chill with a Central Otago wine.

And if you are after some food, then Little Blackwood is catered by a nearby kitchen so we have no doubt their food goes above and beyond what you’d find at your typical bar to complement their great drinks.

22. Four Square

The Cheapest Meal in Queenstown

When you truly are a budget traveller, possibly living in a dorm room (or a tent), spending $10-15 NZD on each meal is going to add up fast.

That’s why we wanted to include the cheapest place to buy a meal in Queenstown:  Four Square. Head in here and grab some rolls, lettuce and ham, and you have lunch and dinner sussed for just $5 NZD.

But if you feel like a hot lunch on a cold Queenstown day, then make your way to the deli section where you can buy hot pies, cooked chicken, bacon, lasagna toppers, sandwiches and more.  Often these are discounted significantly and you can pick up a cooked meal for just $3 NZD.

23. Caribe Latin Kitchen

Best Latin Cuisine

We would like to preface this by saying that we did not have a pleasant experience here.  The service we received from the owner wasn’t great seeing as she incorrectly accused us of not paying.

We showed our bank statements which proved we paid, and despite the poor service, the food we received was absolutely scrumptious.  We’re confident recommending it and we’re sure we’ll be heading back at some point in the future. It’s definitely one of the best Queenstown restaurants, it was just disappointing the service was so poor.

This place gets super busy, so head in early and pick up a burrito or a quesadilla for an affordable $13.50 NZD.

Margo’s is a newer restaurant in Queenstown that’s already attracted a following with its unique style, epic Mexican food, and fun touches. It’s like the owners have picked the best aspects of all of their previous restaurants to make their dream come true.

Some of the fun things they have going at Margo’s:

  • If you’re celebrating your birthday, the staff will dance and sing Happy Birthday at your table.
  • There’s a pool table upstairs.
  • The walls are full of fun art by Deow.1 .
  • The menu option called, Trust El Jefe (Trust the Chef).

When you head upstairs to Margo’s, the atmosphere is buzzing as soon as you walk in.

The team is high-energy and helpful, which is great as the menu can be a little overwhelming…there’s so much going on. This might be a Queenstown Restaurant where you take a sneaky look at the menu before you arrive.

I did like that there’s a lot of options for vegans, and other dietary requirements (I’ve written some tips about being vegan in Queenstown here ).

I was there to celebrate a birthday and across the board, everyone was stoked with their food, particularly with the presentation. For myself, I asked for the most filling meal and while it was tasty, was still not full.

Margo’s is definitely not the cheapest restaurant in Queenstown, so it was a little disappointing I felt the need to stop in at Domino’s on the way home.

But Mexican food is a favourite of many, and this is definitely a fun night out.

3. SHERWOOD QUEENSTOWN

sherwood queenstown food

Price range: $25 – $50. Come here for the locally sourced food and alround atmosphere. Takes reservations: Yes.

Located halfway between Frankton and Queenstown, The Sherwood is not just a hotel with a restaurant and bar that guests staying at the hotel dine at.

This is a place where people head for a fancier night out at a location serving the community in a variety of ways.

If you take a look at these reasons to visit Sherwood Queenstown , a few of them relate to the restaurant, and I like this message on their website.

“If we can’t grow it or forage for it, we buy it locally.”

The menu changes throughout the year based on what ingredients they can source locally, and even every day as they harvest what they can from their garden daily.

A couple of fun facts:

  • 75% of the food they serve is from the South Island
  • And they collect honey from their own hives
  • Some of the staff will harvest the grapes used to make wine they serve

Once at your table, the staff will take you through the menu and are great at making suggestions based on what you’re feeling. And they know what wines will pair well with each meal.

I went to eat at Sherwood for a work function and got to sample a main, and a host of side dishes. I left feeling super full but if I was to eat just a main, I would’ve needed more for sure.

The presentation is great and despite the restaurant being really busy, the service was prompt which is what you’d expect from a hotel that prides itself on everything they do across the board.

The Sherwood is one of the best restaurants in Queenstown for those who want to eat food with a low footprint. And with a touch of class.

Address: 554 Frankton Road, Queenstown 9300 Online: Facebook | Website

4. FAT BADGER’S

Price range: $15 – $30 Come here for: Pizza! Takes reservations: Yes.

If you’re after some top-quality pub grub, ideally pizza, Fat Badger’s is a local favourite since 2008.

It was a couple of brothers who decided to fill a gap in the Queenstown restaurant scene with epic pizzas cooked in a wood fire oven. When you read their story you can see they’ve had plenty of ups and downs, but that’s only made the regulars feel more connected to them over the years.

Today they get friends who’ll make Fat Badgers a regular location when going out for dinner which inevitably expands to bringing out-of-town guests here.

They’ve got lots of pizza options, 20+, including those that fit all the dietary requirements of people these days. And they’re fun with names like The Arnold Schwarzebadger.

And when you order the massive 20-inch pizzas. They’re legitimately massive. If two of you get through one of these, that’s an impressive effort.

But they do more than pizzas if you’re struggling to encourage some of your mates to join you.

It’s crazy to think pizza restaurants in Queenstown weren’t readily available back in 2008. Today it seems every restaurant serves pizza…including the restaurant up next!

Address: 33 Camp Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Instagram | Website

Price range: $20 – $30 (most people can share a large pizza). Come here for: Pizza. Takes reservations: No (if you need to wait for a table, you can take a seat at the bar or by the fireplace).

The Cow might be located in a former milking shed, but this place gives me European Chalet vibes with its stone wall interior and exterior.

The Cow opened its doors in 1977 and if this is true like they say on their website, the menu hasn’t changed since opening day, that’s impressive!

There have been some ownership changes over the years, but The Cow is the longest-running restaurant in Queenstown. Also impressive.

The pizzas here are pretty good I must say, even from someone who is quite happy with Dominos.

I went here with a group of friends, and between the six of us got three large (14 inch) pizzas to share. They all went down a treat as we sat inside the dimly lit interior (dimly lit in a good way).

It would have been nice to have a vegan pizza, but I guess back in 1977 when the menu was created the vegan scene wasn’t as popular as it is today 😉 So we got the vegetarian pizza without the cheese.

There’s also a host of spaghetti options as well, but no one at our table tried that, you’re here for the pizza.

If there’s one thing I didn’t like about the experience, it was the waiter who was pushy in getting us to order sides. It didn’t sit well with me.

Wondering why the logo features her Majesty, Queen Victoria, and why there are photos of her around the restaurant? The Cow was a nickname during her reign after she compared breastfeeding to being a cow.

Address: Cow Lane, Queenstown, Otago 9300 Online: Facebook | Website | Instagram

6. FARELLI’S TRATTORIA

farellis queenstown

Price range: $25 – $40. Come here for: Pasta. Takes reservations: Yes.

Farelli’s is similar to The Cow in that the majority of the meals are pizza and pasta.

But rather than feeling like a European Chalet, Farelli’s feels like a more traditional restaurant tucked away inside the building that also houses Boardwalk and Atlas.

While it feels fancy in some regards, the red checkered table cloth keeps the relaxed feel, as are the staff who are chill but know their stuff.

The menu is extensive, and I love how they’ve got lots of vegan options on the menu !

I ordered the vegan Casarecce alla Norma ( short twist pasta, eggplant, spicy tomato sugo, house tofu ricotta, fresh basil & cashew parmesan. ). The reason being, it was one of the more filling meals on the menu according to the waitress (that was in addition to a couple of polenta chips and focaccia I had).

It did fill me up which I was pleased with, and was solid, but I wasn’t wow’ed. Not that I’m a big Italian fan. I was impressed by how similar the meals looked between the vegan and non-vegan options!

Everyone else was chuffed with their meals…and left happy as. There were zero complaints in the 15 minutes after leaving this Queenstown restaurant.

There’s not a tonne of beer options, but there’s a good variety of what they do have, including the alcohol-free Heineken.

We booked in for a group of 11 which was easy on a Tuesday evening. What I wasn’t a fan of was what seemed to be like the sparse service…we didn’t have our mains for about 75 minutes. The smaller tables were in and out a lot faster than us.

Address: Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Facebook | Website

7. @ THAI CUISINE

mussman curry

Price range: $20 – $30. Come here for: Thai. Takes reservations: Yes.

@ Thai Cuisine is a restaurant I never knew existed until I looked it up on Google Maps to try and find it too meet friends who had booked a table.

Walking up the stairs, the place is stunning once you make your way through the door. And the staff with smiley faces are there to greet you. This felt as closest to Thailand I’ve been in a long time.

The menu isn’t massive, but there’s more than enough options…though I found it strange you can scan a QR code to see more menu options?

Anyhow, there was no mention of vegan options on the menu but the staff was great at letting me know what could be made vegan. That meant the massaman for me as there are no seafood ingredients in the stock. Don’t forget to order your rice.

The meal was massive. I often leave restaurants hungry after a meal…this wasn’t the case here. And the side of rice cam in a teddy bear shape, that’s exciting.

Everyone in our group of 11 was stoked with the food…and everyone was stuffed. The meals are legitimately big…if you don’t have a big stomach, you’ll have a meal for the next day.

Drinks-wise, the beer and wine list aren’t crazy with no outlandish craft beers n the menu which helped make the dinner cheaper.

I’d highly recommend a dinner here…that wait time for the meals to come out wasn’t long.

Address: Level 3/8 Church Street, Queenstown 9348 Online: Facebook | Website

8. TANOSHI TEPPAN AND SAKE BAR

Price range: $25 – $40. Come here for: All the Japanese food (but not sushi). Takes reservations: Yes.

Tanoshi is a restaurant you’ll hear locals raving about. If there was a poll for the best Japanese Restaurant in Queenstown, I feel like they’d win in a landslide. I was here for dinner with my workmates and we ordered a host of tapas and side dishes.

The service was solid, and the dishes came out fast despite the busy restaurant. It’s not a big place, but there’s a good energy about the place I found. As a vegan I couldn’t eat many dishes, but the tofu dish (atsuage-tofu) was a massive hit with me. Adding in a few sides was nice, and I like that they don’t overcharge for the rice.

My boss is a big fan of the food here, ordering takeaway every week.

Drinks-wise, they’ve got a few Japanese beers and whiskey options (and the sake of course) to keep you happy.

Quick tip: If it’s a busy time, definitely book ahead!

Quick tip: If you’ve got lots of vegetarians in your group, you’ll be good to go here…but if there’s a few vegans, there are better spots as a vegan in Queenstown .

Address: Skyline Arcade, Queenstown 9300 (they also have two other locations nearby) Online: Instagram | Website

9. EL CAMINO CANTINA

el camino cantina queenstown 2 dollar tacos

Price range: $9 – $25. Come here for: Tacos! Takes reservations: Yes.

Margo’s is a fun place, but El Camino Cantina might well have them done for the classic loud Texmex kind of place…which is exactly what they’re trying to be.

Located in Queenstown’s Upper Precinct, this is a new spot that’s going to attract a lot of people in general, and those who are looking for food and drink after coming off the Tiki Trail or Ben Lomond Track , and this tickles their fancy.

I love how they describe themselves on the website:

  • a large & loud Tex-Mex bar
  • The food menu is unashamedly Tex-Mex

In short, if you’re looking for a good time with friends you’ve got a good chance of finding it here with 100+ types of tequila, sombreros, and free chips and salsa. This place isn’t a place where you won’t get the best Mexican food in town, but that’s not exactly what they’re going for.

I did get stoked on the cauliflower tacos, which at $3 (for all tacos) a pop on Tuesdays, go down an absolute treat with a 500ml goblet of Panhead.

Address: 35 Brecon Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Instagram | Website

10. CARGO AT GANTLEY’S

cargo gantleys vegan burger

Price range: $20 – $30. Come here for: Burgers & beers. Takes reservations: Yes.

Cargo is a beautiful spot in Arthurs Point with plenty of seating both indoor and outdoors. In the winter I like sitting out on the patio, right under the heaters drinking one of their own brewed beers, and in the summer I’ll hang out in the grassy areas sipping away. But I have tried the food at Cargo too, and it’s great. The chef is always looking to mix up the menu.

The burger above is a vegan Bhaji burger, made of crispy courgette bhaji, fire-roast eggplant, rocket, tomato, aioli, and pickles on a Tumeric bun. It was as epic as it sounds, which in addition to a healthy-sized serving of fries kept me happy. My friend had a meat-filled burger, and he was plenty happy too.

Cargo isn’t a restaurant I’d go out of the way to visit if you’re staying in Queenstown, but if you’re coming down from Coronet Peak, driving back from Arrowtown, or chose Arthurs Point as the best place to stay in Queenstown then definitely give this a whirl.

Address: 172 Arthurs Point Road, Arthurs Point, Queenstown 9371 Online: Instagram | Facebook | Website

vegan cauliflower steak from 1876

Price range: $10 – $20. Come here for: Cheap bar food. Takes reservations: Yes.

Once 5 pm hits, you’ll start to see 1876 fill up most nights of the week, especially in the sun. It’s primarily known as a bar, and the cheap drinks ($5 beers) are what draws most people. But they do a solid bar menu as well, and at great prices.

Most nights you’ll be able to find specials, and after grabbing the vegan cauliflower steak and chips, for $10 this has to be one of the best cheapest restaurants in Wellington.

The portion is relatively small, so you may want to have some snacks later on…but it’s definitely a filler!

Address: 45 Ballarat Street, Queenstown, Central 9300 Online: Instagram | Facebook | Website

12. CARIBE LATIN KITCHEN

burrito from caribe latin kitchen

Price range: $15 – $25. Come here for: Different flavours you won’t find anywhere else in Queenstown. Takes reservations: No.

If you’re looking for a relaxed restaurant setting in Queenstown, Caribe Latin Kitchen is the place to go .

There’s not much in the way of Caribbean food in Queenstown, so that makes Caribe Latin Kitchen stand out right away. The food is good though, and despite the small size, you have a large menu with many of the Latin food options you love to see.

This is a great restaurant in you’re looking for a dinner that won’t take all night yet has lots of things to look at. And given the Ballarat Street location, you’ve got prime people watching seats.

This is one of the best restaurants in Queenstown that’s underrated.

Address: 36 Ballarat Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Instagram | Website

13. BOMBAY PALACE

Price range: $20 – $30 Come here for: The best Indian food in Queenstown. Takes reservations: Yes.

They’ve got a couple of restaurants (Queenstown and Frankton) so depending on where you’re staying, you’ll want to choose the one closest to you.

The menu doesn’t cover every single Indian dish under the sun, but there’s plenty to chose from as well as a lot of vegetarian dishes and some for vegans.

The service has always been solid here, and it feels like the usual Indian restaurant. Though I like sitting upstairs in the Queenstown restaurant with a group of friends, it’s less chaotic than being downstairs I find.

The meals are sneaky big, keep that in mind when you choose your level of spice (team hot). And they aren’t shy on the rice which is included. I’d hold off on dessert because by the time you’ve had some naan you might well be stuffed.

p.s. Wednesdays are curry night where yo get a curry and naan for $20.

p.p.s. They do charge a 15% surcharge on public holidays which I don’t like.

Address: 66 Shotover Street, Queenstown 9300 & Online: Facebook | Website

14. KINGPIN

kingpin salad

Price range: $15 – $30. Come here for: Eating while playing tenpin bowling. Yes please. Takes reservations: Yes.

Kingpin Queenstown is fast becoming a popular place to visit on a bad weather day in Queenstown, well even a sunny one given there offerings. All of the offerings are what makes Kingpin one of the top restaurants in Queenstown.

You’ve got a wide variety of options, from burgers to salad, and Pizzas to Shakes, and a bunch more. Its’s a fun menu, and while I’ve only ever had the salads, I can say that all the meals they serve are of large portions.

The best part is you can order food to your table right behind the bowling lane allowing you to eat while doing on of the cool sports…please don’t get the bowling balls greasy with your fingers though!

Address: 35 Brecon Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Facebook | Website

15. THE LOCKER ROOM SPORTS BAR

vegan beef burger lockerroom

Price range: $15 – $25. Come here for: A solid meal while watching sports. Takes reservations: Yes.

Yes! Queenstown now has a genuine sports bar, and The Locker Room does serve solid food!

Making sure there are plenty of TV screens is always going to of priority, but the fact that they’ve created a menu and an entire vegan version of the menu shows that they care about the food here too.

It’s all of the American diner-type meals as you’d expect at a sports bar. Think dogs, burgers, and mac’n’cheese. But the food is good quality and priced well.

And while it’s super cheap, make sure to have a pint of Locker Room Lager…I enjoy it, and some friends say it’s nice for a change-up from all the hazy’s, etc.

p.s. Get the waffle fries. They’re delicious.

Address: 10 Brecon Street, Queenstown 9300 Online: Facebook | Website

I’ll continue to add to this list of Queenstown restaurants as I get to them whenever I’m in town 🙂

Where to Eat in Queenstown

Where to find the best coffee in queenstown.

While these Queenstown cafes serve up a moreish morning brew, many also serve some of the best food in Queenstown too.

Planning a foodie adventure in Queenstown? Get your tastebuds charged and work your way down our list.

There are actually two Vudu Cafes , the original one in the centre of town and the other overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

The coffee is fantastic (we had two each) and they open early if you are on a morning walk.

The food is also perfectly fitting for a cold winter’s morning. We tried the Eggs Benedict and ‘Gibbston Agria Hash with Chilli Fried Eggs’.

The sibling to Fergburger, Fergbaker bakery serves up great, early-morning coffee, as well as pastries and pies perfect for on-the-go if you’re keen to get up onto the ski slopes quickly.

The breakfast burrito is pretty darn good too.

Marmolada is a warm, spacious cafe with a Scandinavian feel. Chances are, if you’re joining the morning ski bus queue wrapping around the corner from the Man Street Carpark, you’ll walk straight passed this cute Queenstown cafe.

Start here for breakfast or pick up a pastry and coffee to keep you warm during your wait to go up the mountain.

Patagonia Chocolates

While their ice creams and desserts cannot be missed, Patagonia Chocolates make delicious coffee and hot chocolate too.

Patagonia roasts their own coffee on site too so you can take home some fresh Queenstown coffee beans to brew your own back at your hotel.

The Boat Shed

We consider the Boat Shed is one of the best cafes in Queenstown for a few reasons.

The historic former New Zealand Railways Shipping Office is positioned right on the lake (you can even arrive by boat). It has some of the best coffee in Queenstown and a delicious farm-to-table menu.

Cosy up inside or venture out onto the deck for a closer view over the lake.

Casual Queenstown Restaurants

Dining in Queenstown ranges from fresh fast-food favourites to white-tablecloth award-winning restaurants.

These are a few of our favourite casual Queenstown cafes and restaurants, perfect for dinner in Queenstown with the kids.

If you asked anyone who has visited this gorgeous town where to eat in Queenstown during your stay, Fergburger will most likely always be one of the first places they’ll recommend.

When you see the line outside this joint you will definitely think to yourself, “Nah, I’ll give it a miss this time”.

Let me tell you, it’s worth the wait. The burgers here are world-renowned and very worthy of all the praise and you’ll see why it’s one of the must-do activities to do in Queenstown.

All the patties are made from 100 per cent, prime New Zealand beef, plus there are scrumptious chicken, tofu, falafel and even venison options.

The cow restaurant.

The Cow is a Queenstown institution and the long wait for a table proves it. As soon as you enter the restaurant, your nose will be completely overwhelmed by the delicious scent of wood-fired pizza.

They haven’t changed their menu since they opened nearly 40 years ago. It’s not just pizza on the menu, they are well-known for their spaghetti too.

They don’t take bookings at The Cow so we got there right on opening and scored a table next to the fire.

Be warned; it’s a tiny place, so be prepared to get to know your eating neighbours very well.

They also have a sister restaurant in Wanaka.

Fat Badgers Pizza

Fat Badgers Pizza is all about pizza and cocktails.

Open for lunch from 12 pm, grab a spot on the long tables outside and share a couple of pizzas, salads and even poutine, perfect to meet those post-skiing appetites.

Fat Badgers also has a huge range of vegan pizza options for those looking for vegan cafes in Queenstown.

Cargo at Gantley’s

We loved Cargo at Gantley’s so much on our first visit, we returned a couple of days later.

Set in a gorgeous historic building in Arthur’s Point Queenstown, Cargo is the ideal spot for lunch after coming down from Coronet Peak.

But, it’s also well worth driving around from Queenstown village for dinner or drinks in the afternoon or evening too.

Grab a spot near the fire in winter or if you are travelling to Queenstown in summer enjoy their vast outdoor beer garden.

Order from their menu filled with comfort food and delicious farm-to-table options. They have a Sunday roast on Sundays.

White and Wong’s

White and Wong’s A sian restaurant Queenstown serves up elevated street food with influences from all over Asia.

The food was delicious and our kids even loved everything we tried – from dumplings to Peking duck pancakes.

If you are travelling to Queenstown with a bigger group this Queenstown restaurant also has rooms to book for functions and private dining.

Winnie’s Gourmet Pizza Bar

Another of the most iconic Queenstown eateries, Winnie’s Gourmet Pizza Bar has a fun, vibrant atmosphere and lots of beer.

There are some unique pizza options on the menu, such as the ‘Mexican Fiesta’ including corn chips.

They can open the roof if it gets a little stuffy inside, and it’s also a great place to go if you want to kick on dancing and drinking after dinner.

Lone Star Cafe & Restaurant

The heading for this section might as well be, “BEST RIBS IN TOWN” because the ribs at Lone Star are to die for. Not to mention they are huge.

This is one of the best restaurants Queenstown has on offer for family-friendly or group dining. The pub-style menu has lots of variety, from burgers to delicious garlic prawns and burritos.

Plus, there’s a really decent kids’ menu and in true Queenstown fashion, the produce is high quality.

The Best Fine-Dining Restaurants in Queenstown

There are so many date-night or fancy night-out options when it comes to where to eat in Queenstown.

Jervois Steak House

I enjoyed the best steak I have ever eaten at Jervois Steak House , probably the fanciest of the Q ueenstown steak restaurants

The epitome of fine dining Queenstown style, the focus is on using super fresh local ingredients, and the meat is the hero without too much fussy fusion of flavours.

It’s one of those steak high-end restaurants where you can examine the marbling before you choose your cut.

Spoil yourself and get the Wagyu Sirloin.

Botswana Butchery

Botswana Butchery has long been considered one of the best Queenstown restaurants  (that has now made its way from Queenstown to Sydney), so be sure to book a table well in advance.

It sits right on the picturesque Lake Wakatipu, giving it a beautiful ambience.

The menu is changed seasonally and focuses on strong flavours with fine-cut meats and locally-sourced produce.

We found The Bunker was one of the best places to eat in Queenstown  during our stay.

One of the features that surely help its ranking as one of the best Queenstown restaurants is the fact that it is so intimate.

Hidden in a secret alleyway and behind a rustic, old, wooden door, with log fires and dim lighting adding a beautiful ambience.

The perfect setting for a date night, we got comfortable with a cute table across from the fire in the softly lit space and worked our way through one of the Bunker’s tasting menus with matching wines.

When I asked a local where to eat in Queenstown her immediate response was Blue Kanu .

While we couldn’t get a booking during our visit, it’s on our list for next time, the Polynasian (Pacifica and Asian fusion) fare looks like it would make your taste buds dance.

Our Favourite Bars in Queenstown

We couldn’t simply cover where to eat in Queenstown without mentioning a few of our favourite central Queenstown bar finds too.

Eichardt’s Bar

Eichardt’s Bar was recommended to me as her favourite Queenstown Bar. As soon as we walked into the luxurious Alpine-chic apres space, it immediately became mine too.

As you’d expect from a high-end cocktail lounge, there is a very impressive curated cocktail list.

We couldn’t settle on one visit to Eichardt’s and found it our favourite pre and post-dinner aperitif venue.

The Bunker Cocktail Bar

We popped up to the Bunker Cocktail Bar after our delightful degustation at Bunker Restaurant downstairs.

In the short time we were there, it became clear Bunker would be a late-night favourite for partygoers for sure.

When we first sat down, we easily found seats and enjoyed ample elbow room. A short while later we were contending with the DJ and buzzing bar space.

The Lodge Bar

The designer interiors invite guests into the warm space at The Lodge Bar , right on the Queenstown lakefront.

We happened upon the Lodge Bar when looking for an early dinner at the last minute.

Sitting alfresco complete with blankets and heaters, we shared some plates from the food menu paired with an incredible glass of Otago red, recommended by our very lovely waiter.

While I wouldn’t recommend this to others dining with very young children (it’s a bit fancy), the staff was so kind and inviting to our kids.

I will absolutely return again with friends or for a date night bite.

We also thought it was some of the best food Queenstown has to offer.

Ferg’s Bar

Seemingly a world away from the chaotic burger rush next door, Ferg’s Bar was a Q ueenstown dining delight.

We wandered into Ferg’s initially for a quick drink while we worked out where to have lunch. And, by chance, the food menu was delivered and it was a dream.

So, we sat in the window, perched at the benchtop quietly tucked away from the masses but close enough for a really good serving of people-watching with our perfectly palatable share plates.

It’s all in the name… odd saint , is well, a little odd, and we’re 1000% here for it. This joint has just been nominated for Best Cafe in Queenstown for its day offering, so we’re pumped the doors are now open in the evenings too.

Co-owner and executive chef, Matt Tobin (of sister restaurant, Margo’s) and head chef Anton Walden are killing the game with a complete culinary adventure on offer—sweet and sour prawns and pineapple salsa, crispy duck nachos and a fresh green papaya salad to name drop a few.

Pull up a seat inside the low-lit bistro or enjoy the heated garden courtyard, order a cheeky cocktail and get your evening grooving. Open Thursday to Sunday from 3pm until late.

No5 Church Lane

3/5 church street, queenstown.

gourmet traveller best restaurants queenstown

When the first thing the waiter asks is if you’d like to have crayfish toasties while you decide what you’d like to order, you can be 99% sure it’s going to be a grand old dining experience. The menu at  No5 Church Lane is divided into four categories—land, sea, mountain and harvest—boasting fresh, seasonal flavours from Central Otago’s acclaimed producers and growers.

Now, back to the crayfish toasties…these bite-size morsels are a little fancy, and a lot indulgent (they’re even topped with caviar) and they’re oh-so tasty. The menu is designed for sharing, and everything is cooked to perfection, from the humble roasted Wakatipu artichoke with whipped feta and honeycomb to succulent cuts of meat like the Royalburn lamb and Kawakawa Wellington.

Regardless of whether you think you’ve got room or not, please order one thing, the smoky, salty, buttery rewena bread! Wash it down with their take on a classic ‘corpse reviver’ which combines charcoal gin, sage, and Lillet Blanc and is served with smoke (because who doesn't love a bit of theatre) or a local beer or wine from the extensive list.

The Sherwood

554 frankton road, queenstown.

Someone tucks into a hearty plate of greens at The Sherwood, one of the best restaurants in Queenstown.

There’s something special about dining at a restaurant and knowing that so much care goes into every dish well before it reaches the plate. The Sherwood is a restaurant at the heart of sustainable practice, and with a mad respect for nature not only does all of its produce come from the organic kitchen garden, local growers and producers but 100% of its organic waste is returned to the kitchen garden.

The ever-so-creative seasonal menu offers flavours, colours and textures that reflect the current season, bringing the landscapes right outside the door to your plate. Designed to select a main course and add on a range of sides, we suggest bringing a few friends and trying as much as you possibly can or trusting the chef, you won’t regret either option.

If you need a thirst quencher, the bar operates under zero-waste principles too, with 60% of wine bottled in-house—pretty darn cool may we add. Thoughtfulness goes well beyond the plate at Sherwood and if we had to keep eating at one place again and again this may have to be it.

Margo’s

26 ballarat street, the mall, queenstown.

Wild Mushroom Quesadilla packed with Spinach, Chipotle Spiked Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, Corn Salsa and Soy Caramel on a plate at Margo's

From the second you step inside the colourful arched doorway at Margo’s , you will be immersed in a world of never-ending tastes, sights and smells—raise your salt-rimmed glasses and celebrate. This Mexican-inspired restaurant serves up soul food whose roots lie in the many different regions of Mexico, but that is so distinctly their own, you won’t find it anywhere else.

The menu shares a story of flavour, culture and colour—from their queso fundido (Mexican cheese fondue) to their coconut shrimp with valentino mayo (which the head chef, Matt Tobin dubs “Florida fat kid food”). Plus, many of the ingredients are imported straight outta Mexico, which explains why the food tastes So. Darn. Good! However, the experience wouldn’t be complete without our favourite ‘m’ word... margaritas of course.

The mixologists at Margo’s create incredible concoctions using a unique range of Mexican Tequilas, Mezcals, Whiskey and Gin that pay homage to the authentic flavours found abroad. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila... you know how it ends. And with the eye-catching street art adorned walls, quirky decor, and vibing energy, quite frankly you won’t want to leave.

The Grille By Eichardt's

9 marine parade, queenstown.

A sumptuous meal of grilled lamb with veggies on the side served at The Grille, one of Queenstown's best restaurants.

Part of the iconic and luxurious hotel, Eichardt’s, The Grille is notably one of Queenstown’s premier dining spots. Only a few metres from the picturesque shores of Lake Wakatipu, it also boasts one of the best dining room views in town #seriously.

Enter the New York bistro-esque restaurant and you’ll be pleasantly welcomed by the stylish and classy interior and warm friendly staff, before getting down to business with an impeccable menu that showcases the unique tastes of Central Otago and Southland in every dish.

With mains like Eichardt’s Legendary Seafood Chowder, through to a comprehensive chargrilled and Otago meats menu you’re spoilt for choice, however, if you trust the chef—and you should—then we recommend the 'taste the region' four-course set-menu—with matching vino of course. An impressive wine, beer and cocktail list means you can keep the drinks free-flowing after dinner too. Score.

16 Church Street, Queenstown

Shaved Red & Green Cabbage is tossed together with Sliced Green Beans, Candied Crumbled Peanuts, Mung Bean Sprouts and Pickled Carrots. Dressed in an Orange, Lime and GF Soy Sauce and topped with Crispy Mandarin Segments at Blue Kanu.

We know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but sometimes you just do. Like when you judge the food is going to be epic at a restaurant based on the fact that the interior is cool and artsy—we may have just done this with Blue Kanu , and it most definitely paid off.

The colourful and contemporary restaurant interior blends Pacifica and Asian cultures together in an uber-cool and classy way—aptly named, “Polynasia”. This seamless fusion carries on to the cuisine, with a combination of healthy, fresh and exotic dishes that are sure to leave you wanting more. Gather your troops and enjoy the tapas-style selection up at the Hula Hut bar or soak up the art, culture and friendliness of the Pacific in the restaurant—either way, you’re in for a cultural soul food session like no other.

We recommend trying the pulled duck nachos, salmon poke, Hulu Hulu chicken and one of their quirky cocktails. With a vibrant and fun atmosphere, sip away as you enjoy the delicious food, and if it’s your lucky day the staff might just serenade you with live singing and music, no wonder it makes our list of one of Queenstown's best restaurants.

Tanoshi Teppan And Sake Bar

Skyline arcade, queenstown.

A bento box at Tanoshi.

Tucked away in Queenstown Mall, Tanoshi Teppan and Sake Bar is a cosy hidden gem you’ll want to run into on a cold winter's day (and any day really). The tapas-style menu, cooked on the teppan grill by chef Tatsuhito Sasakura, is full of delicious shared plates that’ll not only leave you with a full belly but a full heart.

Choose from a wide range of authentic dishes, including salmon and scallop sashimi, perfectly crispy tempura, dumplings, fried chicken and tasty meat skewers. The authenticity doesn’t stop there, with outstanding service that’s widely recognised in Japanese culture—this eatery feels like you're perched in someone’s cosy home, rather than a restaurant and we love it.

Plus, during the day they serve up the most delicious ramen—perfect on a cold day (or a hot one for that matter). And, if you’re keen to warm the soul a little more there is an extensive list of sake, whiskey, Japanese cocktails, and Japanese lager that’ll leave any alcohol connoisseur pleased as punch.

Nest Bar & Kitchen

139 fernhill road, fernhill, queenstown.

The interior of the stunning Nest Bar and Kitchen, one of Queenstown's best restaurants. With a view.

You’ll start on a high at Nest Bar & Kitchen —literally, as it’s renowned for being the highest alfresco eatery in Queenstown—and with the heights, come stunning views over Lake Wakatipu. With a contemporary twist on much-loved Mediterranean classics, the menu at Nest has six delicious sharing-style sections including street food, small bites and mains—tip: the more friends you bring the more you can order (and you’ll want to order everything).

We love the street food menu and have to give a special shout-out to the calamari and saffron sliders with a charcoal bao bun, both beautiful and delicious. Other favourites include the seared tuna and salmon, heirloom tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella (delish!), and you can’t go past Nest’s signature Southern Alps Merino Lamb with lemon couscous, spicy Moroccan sauce, mint and yoghurt.

You won’t be short of an after-dinner refreshment either, the bar is fully stocked with a specially curated selection of NZ gin and tonics, Japanese whiskeys and has an exclusive Central Otago cellar.

Rātā

43 ballarat street, queenstown.

Close up food porn of a lightly colourful reinvented dish featuring line caught swordfish, ora king salmon caviar, daikon, cucumber, karengo, and togarasgi from Queenstown's best restaurant Rata.

You simply can’t write a top dining list in Queenstown without including Rātā , it just wouldn’t be complete. The brainchild of legendary celebrity chef, Josh Emett, this eatery is one we recommend everyone tries at least once, foodie or not you’ll leave wanting more.

The deliciously inventive menu celebrates New Zealand in all its glory, from the freshest produce to locally sourced organic ingredients that are preserved, fermented and dehydrated to bring the flavours of the south year-round.

The menu has everything you could possibly want, from grass-fed beef tartare to Big Glory Bay Salmon, Havoc Farm Pork Belly with torched scampi (mmm) and spring carrot and pine nut filo. Whether you’re dining in for lunch or dinner you have to try the eatery’s modern twist on the infamous NZ classic cheese roll—the Southland Windsor Blue Cheese Roll with preserved apricots and honey and mustard which will blow your socks off in more ways than one.

It’s not hard to tell why this is one of the best restaurants in Queenstown.

Botswana Butchery

17 marine parade, queenstown.

The mouthwatering lamb ribs at Botswana Butchery.

A well-oiled Central Otago establishment, Botswana Butchery is undeniably one of Queenstown's best and most renowned restaurants. Housed in Queenstown’s historic Archer’s Cottage, the ever-so-stylish and inviting setting will instantly make you want to stay all night long and with roaring fires and lake views, there really is no reason to ever leave.

Sit in complete luxury, while you enjoy the superb menu on offer—everything from the finest cuts of wagyu eye fillet and slow roast lamb shoulder from the “Butchers Block” to an extensive range of seafood (try the Flash Fried NZ Paua with garlic and lemon—yes!).

And to wash it down, both the dinner and lunch settings can be matched with a recommended wine from the restaurant's private 1800-bottle cellar. The attention to detail in this establishment is ten-fold, everything from the service to food to wine—you’ll feel right at home.

Flame

88 beach street, queenstown.

The interior at Flame Queenstown shows a beautiful dining room with light streaming through the windows.

Meat lovers, rejoice! Flame is bringing the heat in more ways than one. Using their very own secret South African BBQ recipes, this eatery is serving up some of the best sticky ribs and steaks in Queenstown and we can’t get enough.

But no steak is complete without a potato counterpart, choose between tasty chips or baby roast potatoes with sour cream—such an easy choice, we’ll take both. And, although these guys may specialise in succulent meats, there are many more strings to their culinary bow, so many in fact that there’s plenty of reason to dine here again and again.

From the freshest seafood plates to burgers, vibrant seasonal salads and their famous creamy Mozambique prawns (a serious must-try), there’s something to please everyone—even that one fussy friend that asks a million questions. Oh, and make sure to come hungry as their portions are generous, to say the least.

Level 1 Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, Queenstown

Small artfully arranged bites of sashimi sit on a plate at Boardwalk.

Relatively new to the iconic Steamer Wharf and yet landing itself squarely on the list as of one QT's best restaurants, Boardwalk is giving Queenstown’s fine dining scene a shake-up. Dining here is the complete package, from the nautical-lush setting to the impressive views of Lake Wakatipu and an evolving menu offering the freshest seafood, local meats and beautifully prepared produce.

Get things started with the walk-up oyster bar, yes, you read that correctly. Daily from 9:30am (and year-round), you can enjoy fresh, live-shucked oysters—whether you have one or a cheeky dozen, you’d be silly not to head upstairs to the star of the show. The restaurant is a true culinary experience, from the beautifully presented Grilled North Island Octopus with lemongrass mayo and chilli to the mouth-watering Cardrona Merino Lamb Rack and everything in between, you really can’t go wrong.

The chefs have even gone one step further to create a separate full vegetarian menu. And if the first two courses have you wanting to take things to third base (recommended), the dessert menu is top-notch. Whether you select the Whittaker’s Chocolate Delice or a moreish cocktail from the specially-curated dessert cocktail menu, you can indulge as you admire the majestic Lady of the Lake, the TSS Earnslaw steaming away.

Shotover Street, Queenstown

If you’re looking for a spot to refuel after a big day of activities, or a big night out (we’re not judging) go straight to Fergburger . If you haven’t heard of this one, you may just be living under a rock, as it’s not only New Zealand’s but one of the world’s favourite burger joints and it’s right here in our backyard—and as such no self-respecting list of best Queenstown restaurants would be complete without it.

Make sure you bring your appetite, as the burgers are no small feat. You can’t beat the classic Fergburger, with Prime NZ beef, the quirky-named Cockadoodle Oink (crumbed chicken and bacon—geddit?) or the Holier Than Thou, spicy satay tempura tofu burger mmm. There’s a line outside 24/7, so prepare for some people watching as you wait for your feast or take a local’s tip and call in your order, swing by the pick-up window and pop down to the lake (just watch the pesky seagulls who are also partial to a Fergburger treat or two).

With Fergbaker, Mrs Ferg Gelateria and Fergbar right next door, you’ve pretty much got everything you could ever need in one spot.

The Best Restaurant In Glenorchy

The dining room at the headwaters eco lodge, 42 oban street, glenorchy.

The summer crab at The Dining Room, one of the best restaurants in Glenorchy.

A spectacularly scenic 45-min drive from Queenstown, on the northern shores of Lake Wakatipu, a divine destination dinner awaits! Helmed by award-winning chef, Pete Gawron, The Dining Room at The Headwaters Eco Lodge in Glenorchy is a culinary adventure not to be missed.

Inspired by his escapades in Morocco, Thailand and Europe, Gawron’s evolving menu incorporates daily garden-to-table dishes made with freshly picked produce from the organic kitchen garden and matched with local wines from the Central Otago region. This uniquely holistic approach runs right through to the establishment itself, with nearly every element of the thoughtfully designed building made from recycled materials, how cool?

Even cooler, the rustic-luxe retreat offers a wine, dine and stay package meaning you can stay and enjoy the peace and tranquillity just that little bit longer… after all, there’s gotta be a reason (or ten) why Glenorchy has been coined the ‘scenic gem of New Zealand’.

All that munching got you thirsty? Hit up one of Queenstown's best bars .
