Graham Nash Setlist Delivers 60 Years of His Songs and Stories

by Tina Benitez-Eves October 24, 2023, 10:57 am

In the spring of 2023, Graham Nash embarked on a world tour, which also marked the 60th anniversary of his first single with The Hollies, “(Ain’t That) Just Like Me,” a cover of the Coasters song, which hit No. 25 on the UK chart.

Kicking off with two nights at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania on April 12, Nash’s Sixty Years of Songs and Stories Tour has continued across the U.S. and Europe and back to America again during fall 2023 before wrapping up in Australia and New Zealand in March 2024.

Nash’s tour also coincided with the release of his seventh solo album, Now , in 2023, his first new album since This Path Tonight in 2016. Typically running 21 to 23 songs, sets cross Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) and the group’s catalog with Neil Young , along with Nash’s solo catalog and handpicked covers peppered in. Covers of Joni Mitchell (“A Case of You”), The Beatles (“A Day in the Life”) to Buddy Holly (“Everyday”)—and even Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With”—has slipped into the set.

Right from the start, Nash kicked off his show in April with a trio of Crosby, Stills, & Nash with the band’s “Wasted on the Way,” “Marrakesh Express,” and “Find the Cost of Freedom.” Some shows have also featured The Hollies’ 1966 hit, “Bus Stop,” as the second song in the set. Originally penned by 10cc’s Graham Gouldman, the song went to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Hollies.

In between some solo offerings of “Military Man,” “Sleep Offering” and “Simple Man,” from his 1971 debut Songs for Beginners , Nash also ventured into Crosby & Nash territory with several picks from their four albums together, including “Lay Me Down,” Broken Bird,” “To the Last Whale…A. Critical Mass B. Wind on the Water,” and more before closing on CSN’s 1970 classic “Teach Your Children.”

Though Nash has switched up the two parts of his set with covers, CSN, and solo material throughout the tour, here is a sample setlist from the first show of the tour.

Graham Nash Unveils Expansive North American Tour

Graham Nash has shared his plans for an expansive North American tour, set to span a range of regions this summer and fall. Following the 2023 release of Now , the artist’s first collection of new material in seven years, this outing continues a new clear-eyed and nostalgic, yet forward-thinking and generative chapter in the artist’s story with a striking 38 live engagements. For five of these dates, the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee will be joined by special guest Jody Collins, underscoring shared roots at the outset of the artist’s complex and influential six-decade career.

Nash will kick off his 2024 run in the dog days of summer with an Aug. 3 show at Chautauqua in Boulder, Colo., launching into a four-night run in the Centennial State that will wrap with an Aug. 7 return to Chautauqua. Next, the legendary songwriter will bear east for a 10-stop sprint through the Great Plains and Midwest regions, highlighted by a stop at Royal Oak, Mich.’s Royal Oak Music Hall on Aug. 21 and a final Midwest show at The Kent Stage in Kent, Ohio on Aug. 23. Five solo stops in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic from Aug. 24-30 will then bring Nash to his five-show series with Collins, which will show the pair on such storied stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall on Oct. 1 and Boston’s Shubert Theatre on Oct. 3.

From Oct. 4-10, Nash will present three solo dates in the Northeast and cross the northern border from appearances at Quebec City, Quebec’s Palais Montcalm on Oct. 8 and Ottawa, Ontario’s National Arts Centre on Oct. 9. Then, after a final show with Collins at the State Theatre in Ithaca, N.Y. on Oct. 12, the artist will move on to the Midwest and Southeast for the final leg of his 2024 calendar. Nash’s last series will commence with a pair of shows at Evanston, Ill.’s Cahn Auditorium on Oct. 15 and 16 and finally conclude with a three-show residency at Vienna, Va.’s storied Wolf Trap, which will be staged in The Barns for unprecedented intimacy with the world-changing songwriter.

Nash described his 2023 album Now as “the most personal one I have ever made,” noting that “[a]t this point in my life, that’s something to say. The record was released to widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike, carrying the artist’s legendary voice into a new era and welcoming devoted fans of a new generation. The artist’s seventh solo studio project is available on all streaming platforms now .

Graham Nash Is in the ‘Now’ With New Album and Tour, but Reflective About David Crosby and CSNY

The singer-songwriter also talks about his friendships with Joni Mitchell and the Hollies' Allan Clarke, as he hits the road again in advance of a May 19 album

CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND - AUGUST 02: Graham Nash poses during a portrait session at the Cambridge Folk Festival 2019 at Cherry Hinton Hall on August 02, 2019 in Cambridge, England. (Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images)

Whether as singer-songwriter, activist or photographer, Graham Nash has never been one to let moss grow beneath him. Even less so, at 81, it seems, as Nash is mounting his latest tour this week (after releasing “Graham Nash: Live – Songs for Beginners/Wild Tales” in 2022), publishing his intimate photographs from the past and present in books such as “A Life in Focus,” and releasing his first studio LP since 2016’s “This Path Tonight” with the May 19 arrival of “Now,” on BMG.  Though saddened by the sudden passing of his old friend and longtime collaborator David Crosby in January, Nash finds harmony and solace in working with pals such as vocalist Allan Clarke, his co-founding partner in the Hollies 60 years ago (a date marked by Nash’s current tour title, “Sixty Years of Songs and Stories”). Then there are Nash’s strikingly frank new songs on “Now,” some critical of all things MAGA and Trump-ian, some dedicated to love and passion. Nash even manages to pen a track dedicated to the good, the bad and the sad of his relationship with his superstar bandmates in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.  Nash spoke to  Variety  from Sellersville, PA, before showtime on the first day of his 2023 tour. The other day on YouTube’s “Kyle Meredith with…,” you revealed that David Crosby passed away suddenly during a battle with COVID-19. What sort of communication had you had with Crosby toward the close of his life?

Popular on Variety

You’ve been frank about this in the past, that there was friction between you and other members of CSNY at one point, but it sounds like you and Crosby grew close again. Yes indeed.

Is there something you can say about what reunited you both? You and Crosby had such a lovely musical marriage whether it was the four, the three or the two of you. It’s all true. I’d like to only think of the good times, now. I’ll remember the great music that we made, the fun times that we had.

Is there a story you can tell, perhaps that you haven’t discussed before, of something to illustrate the warmth of your relationship with Crosby? We were hiking in Hawaii with our friend and tour manager Mac Holbert, and Mac slipped, fell and shattered his kneecap. I watched David carry Mac for almost a mile to get back to a place where he could be medically treated. I always though that such a moment showed off what a big heart that David had.

Is there any conversation among those who remain of CSNY – you, Stephen Stills, Neil Young – about how you might eulogize David Crosby in any public way?

Considering you have not released an album of new music in seven years, were you not writing a bunch? Were you writing and honing? Or, on a track such as “When It Comes to You,” are you just waiting for inspiration and… pow? Because it sounds as if you are a pretty fast read. Yeah, I am. What can I say? I’m a writer and I have to feel something very strongly before I start in on a subject.  One song that thrills is the one you wrote to Alan Price from the Animals’ solo soundtrack to the 1973 film “O Lucky Man!” It was an instrumental track that you wrote the lyrics to recently, “In a Dream.” That song from 50 years ago must’ve really stuck with you. Why?  It did. Since the day I first heard it, it lingered in my brain. The song was called “Pastoral,” and I just always loved it. I called Alan, told him I had an idea to add words, and he just asked that I send it to him when I had finished. He loved it, so it’s on the record. It’s a beautiful melody.

On “Now,” there are scathing songs about MAGA and those who choose to follow that agenda. There are eloquent love songs presumably directed to your wife, Amy. There is one song, however, completely written by you – “I Watched It All Come Down” – where you write smartly about “the rock and roll parade” and how you “watched it fall” and have “seen it grow.” We can guess, but talk about who that song embraces. It was about my emotional feelings toward Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I reached incredible heights musically with them, and the opposite has been true with them, too – saddened that we didn’t make more music. We do, though, know that the music we did make is the most important part of our relationship. So this is about the thrill of having made music with David, Stephen and Neil. I wish it could have continued.

You’ve always been cogent and cutting when criticizing American mores, American politics, American life. Can you say something about your journey in the United States, when you first got comfortable with speaking your mind and taking a stand in your new home?

When I first came to America, I’d already learned to write melodies that you could sing back to me if I played it a couple of times. Hearing and seeing what David, Stephen, Neil and Joni (Mitchell) were writing, I knew I had to make an effort to write better lyrics for the melodies I was creating. Thank God that I do live in America – a very beautiful country with many faults, and so much more going for it. I know that here that I have the right to speak my mind, even if people don’t agree with me.

You mentioned Joni Mitchell , so I’ll ask about your take on how she has flourished musically and personally since her recovery. It is a third or fourth rebirth for her. First off, I am so pleased that she is alive. We almost lost Joni when she had her brain aneurysm. I have seen remarkable progress in her ability to walk, and to think and to talk. I saw her recently, and asked if she had had any ideas for songs or for paintings, and she looked at me and said, “no.” But then, she added “Not yet.” I loved the “not yet” part. I firmly believe that Joni has finally come to understand, particularly at the Gershwin Prize Awards in Washington, D.C., that she is truly loved by millions of people.

Graham Nash announces 2023 tour dates, new album

Nash will celebrate 60 years as an artist

Graham Nash is marking his sixth decade in music with the launch of the Sixty Years of Songs & Stories Tour in 2023. The trek celebrates the 60th anniversary of The Hollies’ first single, a band he co-founded in 1962.

The tour launches April 15th with a pair of shows in Annapolis, MD. Dates are scheduled through July 3rd, including three shows in Chicago, New York City and Park City, UT. Nash will be joined on stage by his longtime musical partners, Shane Fontayne on guitar and vocals and Todd Caldwell on keyboards and vocals, performing favorites from his 60 year career.

Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster .

Nash is also set to release his new album  Now  in the spring, although no release date or further details are available as of press time.

The 2x Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments – from the launch of the British Invasion to the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award winning renaissance artist – and self-described “simple man” – Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.

Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of our lives for nearly six decades.

Nash’s remarkable body of work began with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68, including “Stop Stop Stop,” “On A Carousel,” and “King Midas In Reverse,” among others.

The original classic union of Crosby, Stills & Nash & Young lasted but 20 months. Yet their songs are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs” and “Lady of the Island,” from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP and his iconic “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” from CSNY’s Déjà Vu .

Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971, beginning with two landmark albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales which further showcased the depths of his abilities as a singer and songwriter, yielding such favorites as “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness.”

His passionate voice has long been heard in support of peace and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events.

In September 2013, Nash released his long-awaited autobiography Wild Tales, which landed him on the New York Times Best Sellers list. In recognition for his contributions as a musician and philanthropist, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.

While continually building his musical legacy, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist whose work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide, and his photography has drawn honors including the New York Institute of Technology's Arts & Technology Medal, an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, and the Hollywood Film Festival's inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber Award.

Most recently Nash released A Life In Focus: The Photography Of Graham Nash (via Insight Editions), in which he reflects on more than fifty years of an extraordinary life in an extensive collection of personal photographs and artistic stills.

GRAHAM NASH ADDS U.S. SUMMER TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED NEW ALBUM “THIS PATH TONIGHT"

Nash to perform on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday, May 9

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash has announced a new string of U.S tour dates in Summer 2016 in support of his new studio album, This Path Tonight, which was released worldwide on April 15. The new album landed on seven different Billboard charts in the United States, was his highest charting album in the UK in over 45 years, and has done extremely well on all international charts, including Japan, Holland, Italy, France, Norway, and Germany. In support of the success of the new album, Nash will perform on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday, May 9.

Critics are talking about This Path Tonight :

““It's a major time of change for Nash . . . Nash's focus is on  This Path Tonight , out April 15 and produced by former Lone Justice member and Bruce Springsteen sideman Fontayne, which catches the British vocalist on a creative high, inspired significantly by the new love in his life.” - BILLBOARD

“A starburst of glorious harmony . . . the thought occurs that This Path Tonight could be Nash’s very own Blood On The Tracks . . .” - UNCUT

“Longtime Nash listeners will find plenty to satisfy them here” - MOJO

“All the elements you’d want are there: acoustic guitars, harmonicas, harmonies . . . and that Mancunian accent” - SHINDIG

“ The path navigated by the folk-rock veteran — still in fine voice — is the road to rediscovery . . . With producer Shane Fontayne adding dimension and tension to the music, Nash’s first album of originals in 14 years is marked by hope . . .” - BOSTON GLOBE

“ Trace elements of the same passion that drove him through his work with The Hollies and then Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young ) are clearly audible on This Path Tonight , though the Blackpool-born singer is obviously in a very different place now.  This Path Tonight is simply Nash continuing to be as present as possible for everything he experiences and recording the results. It's what he does.” – NPR

This Path Tonight  is the new studio album and collection of 10 original songs from Graham Nash. Produced by Shane Fontayne , this is Nash's first solo record of new music in fourteen years.  The album is one of reflection and transition of a singer-songwriter whose career ( the Hollies, CSN, CSNY ) has spanned more than five decades and counting.

Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and two-time Songwriter Hall of Fame Inductee, Grammy Award winner, a New York Times best-selling author, and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.)
