My favorite band of all time! The first time I got to see them was at a Chicago music festival and I got to meet them and it was a highlight of my life. They were so nice and hilarious. Then I got to meet them again at a tiny show in Dallas at the house of blues and they told stories from the road. Such down to earth guys. I got to be front row for that show and they just thrived in that small room it was such a special experience. They just never disappoint. Their old stuff is what we love and grew up on but their new stuff is just as good. Will always be their #1 fan. Hope to see them as many times as possible.

This was my third time seeing Sum 41 and they were absolutely fantastic! They never disappoint! The only thing I will say is that I found out after I left the concert that they came out for a second encore and played Pain for Pleasure. Probably around 80% of the people had left before then, so I assumed they were done after the first encore. I would just recommend that everyone really makes sure they are truly done before leaving. I also thoroughly enjoyed the openers, who were The Plot in You and The Amity Affliction. Sum 41 is great live, and I look forward to seeing them again and again.

Here's Where Sum 41 Will Play Their Final Show As A Band

The pop-punk group have announced their major international tour of the setting sum, which will conclude in canada in 2025..

Sum 41

Canadian pop-punk icons Sum 41 have announced their final headlining world tour, Tour Of The Setting Sum, which will conclude with their last ever show as a band in January, 2025. The concert will bring them back to their home province of Ontario — the group hail from Ajax, Ontario — for one final gig at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on January 30 of next year.

Before that, though, the band will tour the world, with 70-plus dates kicking off in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 1, taking the group to Japan, Austria, America and more. The tour coincides with the release of the band's final album, Heaven :x: Hell , which is set for March 29.

advertisement

The band has previewed the album with two singles. "Landmines" is a high energy shot of classic pop-punk — a sound that has had clear influences on younger acts like Olivia Rodrigo, Willow, and rising Canadian songwriter ThxSoMuch — while "Rise Up" shows off a heavier sound the band has embraced in the last decade, without sacrificing Sum 41's penchant for catchy choruses. The singles reflect Heaven :x: Hell 's duality: a double record, the album has one half highlighting pop-punk, and the other leaning towards metal.

In addition to the closing show in Toronto, the Tour Of The Setting Sum features a run of four Canadian dates in Quebec, with the band playing Rimouski, Quebec City, Saguenay and Victoriaville this August. The tour also includes Sum 41's largest show to date, a sold-out performance at the Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre, France hosting over 35,000 people.

The tour will serve as a final hurrah for Sum 41 following a 27-year career. The band first rose to attention during the pop-punk heyday of the early 2000s with their 2001 debut LP All Killer No Filler , which reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on the Canadian Albums chart. They build on that success with 2004's Chuck , which went to No. 2, and hit No. 1 in Canada with 2007's Underclass Hero . The band have also won two Juno Awards and sold over 15 million albums worldwide.

Though Sum 41's recent tours have only been getting bigger as fellow veteran pop-punk bands like Blink-182 and Green Day play stadiums , lead singer Deryck Whibley explained in a recent interview with GQ that the pace takes its toll, between stress and medical issues and detracting from time with family. Last fall, following a tour with The Offspring, Whibley experienced a life-threatening bout of COVID and pneumonia .

Whibley doesn't want to end up "a miserable rock star who doesn’t want to go onstage," he told GQ . Instead, the band are going out on a high, experiencing a career resurgence and releasing a record Whibley is proud of.

Pre-sale for Tour Of The Setting Sum starts on Friday, January 19 via the band's website . Toronto pre-sale begins on January 17.

Developed with ADVANCE, the addition marks the first time in its 45-year history that the awards program will officially recognize the genres, and marks a major win for Francophone R&B, soul and gospel artists.

Quebec's ADISQ awards are making a rare major change this year: adding a new prize for Best R&B/Soul album.

The provincial Association of the Record, Show and Video Industry (ADISQ) awards its coveted Félix trophies every year at a series of galas. ADISQ already presents 18 album of the year awards, in categories such as Rock, Folk, Country, Rap, and World Music. This year, the association will present a new award for R&B/Soul album of the year.

The addition of the award is a major win for R&B, soul, and gospel artists in Quebec, Black-led genres that have gone under-recognized in ADISQ's 45-year awards history.

The R&B/Soul award was promoted by ADVANCE, Canada's Black Music Business Collective, and Maison Kanda, a soul and R&B label. ADVANCE's Francophone Board Chair, Widney Bonfils — also Director of A&R at Universal Music Canada — has worked with ADISQ for two years on developing the category. The proposal for the category was also supported by nine other labels.

"This new category encourages soul/R&B and gospel artists to dream in French," said singer-songwriter Corneille in French, one of the founders of Maison Kanda. "I truly believe this is the beginning of something major, and I thank the enormous work of ADVANCE, which made this possible."

This might be ADISQ's first time awarding the genres, but Quebec's R&B talent runs deep, with rising artists like Papi Jay and Naïma Frank currently making names for themselves. To be eligible for the award, an album has to have 70% French lyrics and a runtime of at least 20 minutes or six songs.

Sum 41, Pop-Punk Band of Early 2000s Fame, Says It Will Disband

With catchy songs like “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep,” the Canadian band was part of a pop-punk wave that included Blink-182, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and others.

Deryck Whibley, the lead singer of Sum 41, in black skinny jeans with chains and a loose black tank top with red lettering, and a black wrist sweatband with red stripes, performs onstage, leaning forward with the microphone. The stage features fire effects and equipment.

By Michael Levenson

The band Sum 41 announced on Monday that it was breaking up after 27 years, unleashing a well of nostalgia for the early 2000s, when pop punk seemed ubiquitous on MTV’s “Total Request Live” and in memorable scenes in blockbuster movies.

The Canadian group, fronted by the spiky-haired singer Deryck Whibley, was part of a pop-punk wave that included Blink-182, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and Avril Lavigne. Their hits included “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep,” which fans loved to belt out in their car or jump up and down to at shows.

The band’s music was also featured in popular movies from the early 2000s, among them “Spider-Man,” “Dude, Where’s My Car?” and “Bring It On.”

In a statement on Twitter , Sum 41 did not explain why it was disbanding. It said it planned to finish its tour this year and that it would release a final album, “Heaven :x: Hell,” and announce a final tour to celebrate the end of its run.

“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives,” the band members wrote. “We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first.”

News of the band’s decision led fans to mourn the end of an era. While many punk fans scorned Sum 41 and other groups like it as safe and conventional, pop-punk fans said the music was part of the soundtrack of their youth.

“Fat Lip” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart after Sum 41’s breakthrough album, “All Killer No Filler,” was released in 2001. And decades later, fans still packed Sum 41’s shows clad in fishnet stockings or dark skinny jeans and heavy eyeliner, accented with tricolor wrist sweatbands.

“Sum 41 is most definitely on the Mount Rushmore of early 2000s pop punk,” said Finn McKenty, the creator of the YouTube series “The Punk Rock MBA,” which features an episode on “ The Strange History of Sum 41 .”

“To be able to ride the wave of the MTV-type hype that they had and turn that into a career with real longevity and respect is a rare thing that they were able to pull off,” Mr. McKenty said.

The band’s music seemed to capture the spirit of suburban teenage high jinks.

In an interview with Billboard in 2021 , Mr. Whibley said that when the band, which formed in suburban Toronto in 1996, was trying to gain notice, its members filmed themselves “doing stupid stuff like drive-by water gunning people, egging houses, and cut it with some film of our shows.”

The band’s manager then sent a three-minute version of the video to record companies.

“And then, it was a matter of weeks,” Mr. Whibley said. “Every label in the U.S. was trying to sign us, and it turned into a big bidding war.”

Mike Damante, the author of “Hey Suburbia: A Guide to the Emo/Pop-Punk Rise,” said that Sum 41 was one of the first popular pop-punk bands to fuse metal and hip-hop and that it was disbanding during “a really nostalgic time period for this time in music.”

In recent years, Sum 41 had toured with Simple Plan and The Offspring.

Mr. McKenty said the band had recently been producing music that was “as good or better” than its music from the early 2000s.

“I always like to see people go out on top, rather than go out sad,” he said.
