  • doctorcarla 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tulip Fields, Keukenhof, Authentic Windmills and Holland countryside! We just had the best day with Hans Langh, our private tour guide here in Amsterdam. I had found him through TripAdvisor, and had seen many excellent reviews on him, so I jumped right on it and reserved. So happy that we did! He was super knowledgeable about the Amsterdam area and its history, as well as the North and South Holland areas, and Schermerhorn, where there are some stunning tulip fields. We like to avoid touristy areas, and go off the beaten path, and he knew just where to take us. We also went to Keukenhof, and although it was busy as expected, it was so with it because the flowers were so beautiful. Hans is the best. Really. You will love him. Read more Written April 18, 2019

Hanz was a very friendly and knowledgable tour guide, who took us to authentic little villages far from the tourist crowds. He also took us to some wonderful flower farms that we would never have discovered if we were on our own. He even gave us two bouquets of tulips, and treated us to some local fish delicasies! • kgrisaffee 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Look no further! Kind, knowledgeable, perfect day! Hans was amazing. He’s obviously been in the business a long time and knew exactly where to go and what to see. We had our 4 kids and wanted to see flower fields, Keukenhof, countryside and a castle. He worked his magic and walked us around Keukenhof (which is a total maze and he was a huge help!!!) and same for the castle. The ticket people at both places seemed to know him so he’s obviously well liked in the industry...and having him along cut down on so much time. I didn’t have to read maps, find bathrooms....and he was there to explain stuff. Your time is valuable and hiring him is well worth it bc he saves you time and is so so knowledgeable and kind! I would hire him again in a heartbeat! Read more Written March 30, 2019

  • Elizabeth V 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Private tour of countryside surrounding Amsterdam We had just arrived in Amsterdam from a river cruise and wanted to maximize our time before our departure home the next day. After we did a salon boat on our own, Hans took us to areas most tourists never see. Farms and villages on narrow streets and roads no tour bus could hope to navigate. We also stopped at a beautiful windmill village with shops and "working" windmills. Outstanding photo opportunities here. Hans has a modern air conditioned VW van that could seat 7 or 8 people, so it was great for our group of 4. Read more Written September 9, 2018

  • Annie L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous art, history and cultural experience plus more with Hans. We enjoyed one full and 2 half days touring with Hans back in April. It was a trip I took with my mom and cousin. Being 70, my mom was hoping to have a more leisurely trip (i.e. not have to squeeze on too many public transportation with big group tours). That is when I started looking for private tour guides for our visit. We are so fortunate to have found Hans. Some of the highlights from our week long trip was time spent with him. For starters, we wanted a very art heavy itinerary since all three of us are huge fans of fine art museums. We also knew that we wanted to visit Keukenhof Garden as well as spend one day in The Hague and/or Delft. Hans was responsive and we made some initial plans. Hans also provided some useful suggestions for our visit. We had a slight snafu with our booked dates but Hans went out of his way to make things right by us. For our first tour, we visited the Dutch countryside, otherwise known as the Green Heart of Netherlands. Hans picked us up in his spacious, and clean van and we headed out nice and early. He picked a few charming, and non-touristy towns so we could walk at our leisure away from the big crowds. We visited Durgerdam, Zunderdrop, Ransdorp, took a walk in Broek in Waterland. Along the way we learned some cool history and geography of the countryside. later we went to Monnickendam, Market, and took a ferry to Volendam. We also made short stops in Edam, Beemster polder and then visited the windmills in Schermer polder. It was very cool to see the working windmills and getting to climb in to tour the inside. On our second excursion, we spent a fantastic day visiting The Hague. We knew we wanted to visit Mauritshuis and see The Girl with the Pearl Earrings among others. It was definitely one of the most wonderful and manageable (small) museums we visited. The collection was a showcase of the genius of Dutch masters. We also went to see the unique Panorama Mesdag. Hans took us around the city to see some other sights including the International Court of Justice, palaces and monuments. The city has a completely different feel from Amsterdam. We would not have seen as much as we did if we tried to go there on our own since the city were a bit spread out. The last tour we took with Hans was a half day visit at the Keukenhof Garden. Hans had a pass that took us almost right to the entrance. We went in the afternoon and while it was definitely busy, the visitors dwindled down at the end and we were able to walk around leisurely without running into huge crowds. Due to the unusually cold winter, many of the bulbs were not in bloom yet. However, it was still worth the visit. The variety of blooms in the pavilion was absolutely mind-blowing. We slowly made our way through the garden, taking time to take in the details. We appreciate Hans' patient, calm demeanor. He was flexible and when we hit unexpected traffic and resourceful in getting us to our intended destination or making alternative plans. We enjoyed his stories and explanations of the sites and his shared interest in the incredible art scene in Netherlands. We would definitely go on more tours with him the next time we visit Amsterdam. Read more Written June 8, 2018

"Understated beauty is an accurate way to describe Netherlands. A land of vividly colourful countryside, picturesque villages, and cities bursting with canals and rich with striking architecture"

John, Travel Director

Come face-to-face with Rembrandt's masterpieces

Come face to face with Rembrandt’s iconic pieces and immerse into the mind and soul of a true artistic genius. The Het Rembrandthuis Museum is the place where the Dutch multidisciplinary artist worked for many years, offering treasures that honor the depths of his talents.

Visit The Royal Palace in Amsterdam

The Royal Palace is an Amsterdam must do thanks to its opulent 17th century architecture. Admire the yellow stone exterior before moving inside where you can float across marble floors and glance up at the extravagance of the ceiling and chandeliers. Found on the west side of Dam Square opposite the war memorial, it is close to numerous other Amsterdam attractions.

Walk through the edgy port city of Rotterdam

Journey across the country and find the port city of Rotterdam. Gaze upon vintage ships at the Maritime museum and collect local trinkets from a variety of different retail stores, all while being surrounded by over 160 different nationalities and languages. Bold architecture and an idyllic waterfront location make this a city worth savoring.

Stroll through an enchanting wonderland of tulips

Find the endlessly beautiful fields of tulips in Keukenhof, a mere 40-minute drive from the Dutch capital. You will feel an immense appreciation for nature’s beauty walking through the colorful gardens, alive with petals during the months of spring. Take time to sit and take in the vision and scents, either beside a lake or near a windmill.

Gain insights into the tradition of diamond cutting

Find Europe’s oldest and most renowned diamond cutting in the Netherlands. Visit one of Amsterdam’s many factories and marvel at the art of cutting these sparkly rocks first hand. Coming to the country in the late 16th century, diamond cutting has become a long-standing tradition and part of the Netherland’s cultural fabric.

Our top 5 things to do in Netherlands

From the capital’s majestic Royal Palace to the wonderland of tulip fields found in Keukenhof, these are just some of the experiences we’ll share with you when you visit the Netherlands with Trafalgar.

The Rijkmuseum contains over 8,000 masterful pieces of art, many crafted by famous Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Treat yourself to a day of learning and inspiration and quickly realize why this is the most visited museum in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh Museum

Admire the expressive works of the Vincent Van Gogh Museum and honour one of the most prominent artistic figures of all time. Known for his erratic personal life and huge body of work, have an encounter with the Dutch artist in his homeland within the walls of his contemporary Amsterdam museum.

Anne Frank House

Journey to the soul-stirring home of Anne Frank whose diary uncovered the dark realities of Nazi occupation of WWII to millions of readers across the globe. Well preserved from its original state, you will feel an unnerving connection to this country’s heritage as you walk from room to room.

Best museums in the Netherlands

Fill your mind with intrigue and discover why this country has been home to some of the most brilliant artists in European history. These are just a few of the museums Trafalgar will guide you through, peeling back the layers of culture in The Netherlands.

Bitterballen

A treasured snack found in many cafés, the bitterballen is a deep fried bread ball filled with delicious meat and roux, cooked in rich beef stock with onion, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Dip in creamy mustard or enjoy on its own, either way, it’s addictive.

Stroopwafel

Be mesmerized by the Netherlands beloved waffle meets cookie treat of Stroopwafel. With a thin dough and sticky thick caramel filling, pair this fluffy treat with a warm coffee and a cool day, picked up from a street vendor offering various irresistible toppings.

When the indulgence gets too much, reach for stamppot, a traditional Dutch classic of creamy potatoes usually mashed with carrots, turnip greens, spinach, onions, and kale. Try it topped with smoked sausage like rookworst if you’re still feeling indulgent.

Best food in the Netherlands

The Netherland tempts the tastebuds with caramel filled waffles, deep-fried bread balls and extravagant fries, with an occasional pause for hearty nutrition in dishes like Stamppot. Uncover many culinary delights when you travel through the Netherlands with Trafalgar.

Know where you want to travel to in the netherlands, travel tips for netherlands trips.

Put a springtime trip to the Netherlands on your travel wish list if you'd like to see the country's famous tulips in full bloom. The tulip is considered the Netherlands’ national flower, and you can admire over 70 acres of them in April on our Amsterdam & the Keukenhof Gardens tour. For many, getting to see such a quintessential Dutch attraction makes spring the best time to visit the Netherlands!

While the Netherlands experiences its warmest weather in July and August, the country also gets its highest number of visitors during these peak summer months. But, you won't be missing out if you choose to skip Netherlands tours during this time—the country really is lovely all year, and there is plenty of pleasant weather to enjoy from April to October.

Of course, like many places throughout Europe, the Netherlands also boasts stunning Christmas markets during the winter. If the sparkle of the festive season calls you, start planning a trip to the Netherlands for December to see Dutch cities like Amsterdam and Maastricht decked out for the holidays. Our

Christmas Markets of Amsterdam, Luxembourg & Brussels tour packs a good mix of seasonal cheer and historical sites, and our Christmas Markets of Northern Europe: Amsterdam to Stockholm tour is ideal for travelers looking to see Scandinavian capitals after their Netherlands vacation.

The Netherlands tours we offer give you a peek at all the country's famous highlights. From canals and world-class museums to sprawling flower gardens and quintessential windmills, there is so much to see in this stunning country.

Amsterdam is one of the top places to go for an immersive look at true Dutch culture. With its row houses, outdoor cafes, lively culture, and fascinating history, it truly is one of the best cities in the Netherlands. Check out our Amsterdam tours if seeing this capital city is on your bucket list.

Beyond Amsterdam, cities like Maastricht and Delft offer a different look at life in the Netherlands. Add an excursion to Delft on our Amsterdam, Luxembourg & Brussels tour to see the the town's cobbled alleyways, medieval architecture, and breathtaking churches. Then, soak in picturesque countryside views as you travel through the province of Limburg to Maastricht, a hip university city with plenty of outdoor cafes, shopping, and historic Roman remnants.

Of course, any time you get the chance to see flowers in the Netherlands, take it! Here are just some of the places to go on a trip to the Netherlands to see these beautiful blooms, and more:

  • The famous Keukenhof Gardens, one of the world’s largest flower gardens specializing in tulips. You can visit them on our Amsterdam & the Keukenhof Gardens tour
  • The Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the city of Aalsmeer, where you can watch sales in action at the largest exchange of flowers and plants in the world
  • The Bloemenmarkt, the market hosted on houseboats floating along Amsterdam’s canals

While the Netherlands may not spring to mind when we think of the world's most famous cuisines, the country's food scene is definitely something to write home about. Some popular dishes include fried cod, hearty soups, fries dipped in a variety of sauces, and fried, meat-filled balls called bitterballen .

Looking to step outside your comfort zone? Try maatje , which is raw green herring commonly served with raw onions and pickles. Locals usually eat it as a snack food, so you'll rarely find it in restaurants; swing by a street-side vendor for a taste of the best!

Did you know that the Netherlands is one of the world's largest cheese exporters? It goes without saying, then, that you need to try a few bites of cheese while you're there. Local favorites include Gouda and Edam, and you can find them by popping into almost any market or restaurant.

If you'd like to really indulge, there are plenty of Dutch specialties to satisfy any sweet tooth. Here are some local favorites to seek out on a trip to the Netherlands:

  • Sweet or savory pannekoeken , which are thin, crepe-like pancakes topped with everything from fruit and whipped cream to cheese and ham
  • Small, sugar-dusted pancakes called poffertjes
  • Doughnuts called oliebollen , which are a holiday favorite
  • Stroopwafels , two thin waffles sandwiched together with a caramel syrup
  • Anything and everything made with black licorice, which Dutch people call drop

Thanks to its ample coastline along the North Sea, the Netherlands enjoys moderate weather that rarely gets overwhelmingly hot or cold. But, a majority of Holland sits below sea level, so dampness and fog are not uncommon. Fit in with the locals and remain prepared for the weather by packing simple yet stylish basics that can be layered no matter what the temperature is like on your Netherlands vacation.

While the country's maritime climate prevents any weather extremes, it also means rain showers are common. So, it's best to be prepared with rain gear on any of the Netherlands tours you may have your eye on. A warm rain jacket, travel-sized umbrella, and comfortable, waterproof shoes will come in handy if you happen to get caught in an unexpected drizzle—which is always a possibility on guided tours of the Netherlands!

Looking for more packing tips for the Netherlands tours you have your heart set on? The regional experts on our Customer Experience Team are always just a phone call away. You can also download our mobile Tour Companion App to find a helpful packing list for Netherlands vacation packages once you're booked!
