Why The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick Is The Trio’s Best Special Since Mongolia

The new Grand Tour special is possibly the best one yet, as the trio take three rally cars across the wilderness of Scandinavia

Ever since Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May move to Amazon and created The Grand Tour, they have kept up the tradition of epic specials such as the ones they did on Top Gear. There has been Seamen, where they took three epic boats across Asia. There were the two lockdown specials as well , keeping us entertained during the Covid-19 pandemic and as we came out of it. And of course, who can forget Mongolia where they built John , an epic off-roader.

That Mongolia special was perhaps the best of the lot, until however A Scandi Flick came to our screens . Launched recently, the special sees Hammond in a Subaru Impreza , May in a Mitsubishi Evo and Clarkson in an Audi RS4 , as they take their rally derived machines across the Scandinavian landscape including Sweden, Denmark and Finland. It's an epic road trip, with some brilliant scenery, great laughs and a heroic machine at the heart of it. This is perhaps the best Grand Tour special yet, and certainly one of the most enjoyable to sit down and watch.

The Story Of A Scandi Flick

If you don’t want the plot ruined, then look away now! But we are giving you a bit of an overview of the story. The trio start at the top of Norway, get their three cars on a football pitch and then set off. One of the first places they go to is an old submarine base from the Cold War, where they play a top speed test. This is where the Evo May brings gets its first big douse of damage, and is the crash May had that we had all heard about. It is a big one, but May does manage to climb out on his own with just broken ribs.

The Evo gets repaired, Hammond and Clarkson modify their cars and the trip continues. The trio later build their own small sheds to live in and tow behind their cars, although they don’t last that long. Near the end of the adventure, the Evo gets a dunking in an icy lake but incredibly, the car is brought back to life by May and the Grand Tour team and it is back in action before the end of the adventure.

What Makes The Special So Enjoyable

First of all, there are the cars. These three cars are some of the finest there is, and everyone loves a rally homologation special. True, Clarkson’s RS4 is not a true Quattro. But its DNA goes right back to that first Quattro, and it shows itself to be a truly brilliant car in the special. Fast everywhere and a hero for dragging the Evo out of the water later on. It’s a bit of a geek fest really, as we know the three presenters love their rally cars and rally specials.

Then there is the scenery. Every single country the trio visit offers snow capped majesty, with hills, forests, quaint towns and more. It’s a feast for the eyes, and we are jealous of everyone that is able to enjoy this special in glorious 4K resolution. The adventure itself isn’t the most grueling for the three, but sometimes it's nice to see them not get bogged down in swamps or on truly dangerous roads. Just three mates, in three very good cars, enjoying the scenery. When one of them isn’t crashing one of their cars anyway.

A Truly Enjoyable Scandinavian Trip

What else helps to make the trip so enjoyable to watch is the trio themselves. The three mates offer plenty of laughs throughout the adventure, and it feels more much honest and genuine than other Grand Tour specials have. Above all else, this is just very enjoyable and pleasant viewing. Perfect for a quiet evening in, perfect for a lunchtime bit of TV and just perfect to watch whenever you have the time. It's one of those classic specials that we could watch multiple times, like the Botswana and USA specials from the glory days of Top Gear.

A Scandi Flick Is A Must Watch

If you love the trio and haven’t seen it yet, then you must go and watch it! Just for the Evo itself, which really becomes the hero of the trip and the car we all love and grow fond of. The best bit about it is, it's nearly two hours long! So to sum up, we have three great rally derived cars, a wonderful landscape, plenty of laughs and a truly epic adventure. This feels like a good old return to some of the classic Top Gear adventures, and with more trips from the trio no doubt on the way, we can’t wait for the next one.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick —air date, interview, trailer and everything we know

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick — the boys are back on the road for an icy adventure through Scandinavia's Arctic Circle.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

The Grand Tour boys are back filming in far-flung destinations as series five kicks off with a chaos-fuelled special episode — The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick — which is set in Scandinavia’s icy wilderness.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick begins in the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, where Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May set off on their mission to drive their pick of rally cars through Sweden and onto Finland, without ever dropping below the Arctic Circle.

Their stunning road trip takes in frozen lake racetracks and Cold War submarine bases, with plenty of pranks along the way that leave the trio on thin ice!

Here, Richard Hammond tells us everything we need to know about The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick …

Release date of The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick is available from Friday 16 September on Prime Video.

What happens in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

After two specials filmed during lockdown, Carnage a Trois and Lochdown (both aired last year), the trio is all revved up to be back touring foreign climes. Tasked with driving through what’s described as ‘Europe’s last great wilderness’, Clarkson and co take viewers on a front-seat tour of spectacular snowscapes in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

There are challenges along the way, including pulling makeshift houses across Finland to the Russian border and speeding through ominous tunnels in an old Cold War submarine base.

"It felt great to be allowed back out into the world, but that’s not to play down the specials we shot in lockdown. We were really pleased with them," Richard tells us via video link. "They reminded us that it’s not all about the ambitious scale of a trip; it can be more about how we three get along and our passion for cars.

"But we do explore gorgeous terrain here," says Richard. "It’s described as 'Europe’s last great wilderness', and when the weather permitted, it was spectacularly beautiful. But it gradually became gritty and forbidding."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

What cars will we see in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

Richard tells us: "We figured rally-bred cars would give us the potential to cross rugged terrain, plus they're really exciting. I went for the Subaru Impreza because it was literally born out of rallying. James went for the Mitsubishi Evo, which has a slightly nerdier element.

"Jeremy, however, chose an Audi RS4 because Audi also made a rally car, but it wasn't that one," Richard continues. "It was more powerful than the others, though, so that made him happy. It's usually one rule for him and one for everyone else, but we’ve learned to live with that."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

What else happens in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

Despite often-perilous weather and terrain, as always, the petrolhead pals’ pranks and stunts cause the most chaos. Look out for Richard Hammond hurtling down a ski slope in a homemade house, Jeremy setting fire to his own car and scenes of skiers being towed across a frozen lake at high speeds.

But when James May dramatically crashes in a tunnel and is carted off to hospital, will it cut his trip short?

"I heard a boom from the other end of the tunnel and feared James’s arms, legs and head might have come off because he's not that well strapped together at his age," Richard reveals. "But the motto is, 'We're always prepared to leave a man in the field, if necessary'.

"We were concerned, of course, but on one hand you've got damage to a classic example of a spectacular breed of car, developed and honed over many years," Richard continues. "On the other, you've got possible damage to a gangly, blond-haired old man."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

Is there a trailer?

Yes, you can watch a trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick here. It’s hair-raising stuff!

What else is coming up in series five of The Grand Tour?

The boys have been spotted shooting in Europe but are keeping tight-lipped about details surrounding the next episode. Rumour has it they’ve filmed in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Can Hammond tell us more?

"No, I will be shot!" he laughs.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick is available from Friday, September 16 on Prime Video.

10-day itinerary (one-day Hurtigruten cruise)

Day 1 - to stockholm.

Arrive in Stockholm from the international airport, or transfer by rail from Copenhagen or Oslo. Spend the rest of the day in the historic capital of Sweden, with a beautifully preserved historic center full of canals and waterfronts. Accommodation in a modern hotel close to the main train station.

Day 2 - Stockholm

Enjoy a day off in Stockholm. The city is home to some of the country’s best museums and a wide variety of excellent restaurants. In the evening you board the sleeper train for Lapland. You travel in a private sleeper cabin with bedding and breakfast (brought to your cabin in the morning) included.

Day 3 - Abisko

As you wake up the train makes its way into Lapland, having entered the Arctic circle during the night. The train uses the scenic Ofoten railway, Europe’s most northernly and the world’s third most northern railway. In the late morning, you arrive in the small village of Abisko. This is one of the best places to experience Lapland’s beautiful Arctic landscape in peace and quiet. From Abisko it is possible to book guided excursions or take the cable car up the Noulja mountain. Accomodation in the Abisko Turiststation.

Day 4 - Harstad

Board the train from Abisko further along the Ofoten railway to the end of the line in Narvik, Norway. The train passes the majestic Oforfjord, one of Norway’s biggest. In the colorful harbour town of Narvik you transfer to the bus for Harstad, on the island of Hinnoya. The city has a great view over the surrounding Lofoten islands and mountain peaks. Accommodation at a Thon or Scandic hotel in the city center.

Day 5 - Hurtigruten cruise

Today you board the Hurtigruten cruise ship for a particularly beautiful journey through the Lofoten islands. The Hurtigruten is an epic cruise line traversing the whole Norwegian coast. In this itinerary you stay on board for the most scenic part of the route, including the iconic Trollfjord. The ship makes a few stops along the way, where it is often the only form of transport. At the end of the day, you disembark the Hurtigruten at the fishing town of Svolvaer, where you stay in a small-scale hotel in the town center.

Day 6 - Bodø

In the late morning you leave Svolvaer by bus for a beautiful journey across the Lofoten islands to Moskenes, where you board the ferry across the Norwegian Arctic Sea to Bodø. The journey takes about 4 hours. In the harbor town of Bodø accommodation is in a Thon or Scandic hotel in the city center.

Day 7 - Trondheim

Today you board the Express train on the Nordland-line from Bodø to Trondheim. This is one of Europe’s most scenic rail routes, also known as the Arctic Circle Express or Polar Express. The railway crosses many different landscapes, from beautiful, lush valleys to spectacular glaciers and mountain ranges. The journey takes about 10 hours, and there is a dining car available for a simple lunch and/or dinner. Accommodation in Trondheim in a modern Thon or Scandic hotel.

Day 8 - Oslo

In the morning you have time to discover Trondheim, a colorful city with many interesting monuments and historic buildings. In the afternoon you board the express train for Oslo over the Dovre railway, a scenic railway over the Dovrefjell mountain range. Arrival after 6 hours in Norway’s capital Oslo. Explore this historic city with over 700 years of architecture to be discovered. Accommodation in a modern hotel close to the main train station.

Day 9 - to Stockholm/Copenhagen

Board the direct train back to Stockholm, or optionally to Copenhagen (with one transfer in Göteborg) where you end your spectacular journey to the Arctic. Accomodation in a hotel close to the main train station of Stockholm or Copenhagen.

Day 10 - Return trip

14-day itinerary (five-day arctic hurtigruten cruise).

Itinerary to Harstad as in the short itinerary.

Today you board the Hurtigruten cruise ship for a 5-day journey through the Lofoten islands. The Hurtigruten does not have all the luxuries of an international cruise ship, but rather a more traditional Scandinavian level of comfort. The cabins are simple, yet comfortable. On board you will find a variety of restaurants, ranging from simple buffets to luxurious a la carte establishments. Along the way the ship will stop at various places where field trips organized by Hurtigruten are possible. These can be booked in addition to the tour in our booking menu. The ship halts for 4 hours in Tromsø, where you have an opportunity to discover the city or a sled-dog trip from the Tromsø Wilderness Centre.

The epic Hurtigruten journey continues through Norway’s countless islands via Hammerfest. Today there is an option for a 3-hour trip to the Northern Cape, seeing the breathtaking nature in Norway’s tundra landscape.

The Hurtigruten reaches its final stop at Kirkenes. After 3 hours the ship turns round and heads back South. From here, the parts of the journey that were covered at night on the way North will be covered during the day.

Enjoy the last full day on board the Hurtigruten, as you get to see all the landscapes you missed during the night while heading North.

Today you pass some of the most dramatic and truly breathtaking scenery of your cruise, including the iconic Trollfjord. At the end of the day, you disembark the Hurtigruten at the fishing town of Svolvaer, where you stay in a small-scale hotel in the town center.

Itinerary from Svolvaer as seen in the short itinerary.

After breakfast you could head to Dalsnibba to visit the Geiranger Skywalk , Europe’s highest fjord viewpoint by road. From here you will enjoy sweeping views of  Geirangerfjord . After the skywalk, continue to the historic village of Lom, driving through twisty roads and beautiful mountain scenery. Along the way you can visit the  Lom Stave Church , one of the largest and most beautiful stave churches in Norway.

Continue the drive through the magnificent  Gudbransdalen  valley, which is surrounded by several national parks like Rondane National Park, Breheimen and Reinheimen, before reaching Lillehammer in the afternoon.

Spend the night in Lillehammer.

Driving distance: 265 km / 165 mi Estimated driving duration: 4 hours (without stops)

Day 17: FROM LILLEHAMMER TO MORA

Today you will drive back to Sweden through the thick forests and fells of Norway and Sweden. Along the way, you will pass ski resorts such as  Trysil  in Norway and  Sälen  in Sweden before driving along the trail of  Vasaloppet , the world’s oldest and biggest cross-country ski race. It has a rich history and tradition; hundreds of thousands of skiers have tackled the 90-km stretch from Sälen to  Mora  since it began in 1922. Next, you will visit the famous region of  Dalarna , which is the third most popular tourist site in Sweden after Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Spend the night in the Lake Siljan area.

Driving distance: 318 km / 198 mi Estimated driving duration: 4 hours and 27   minutes (without stops)

Day 18: EXPLORE POPULAR DALARNA

This morning, in Mora , we recommend visiting the 18th-century home and museum of Anders Zorn, one of Sweden’s most celebrated painters. Next, drive to Rättvik , where you can visit the Rättvik church which has a history that goes back 800 years. Make time to see the old church stables that were used as shelter for people and horses. In this area there are many opportunities for activities such as fishing, horse riding and swimming.

Other options today include visiting the pretty village of Tällberg by Lake Siljan , just 15 km south of Rättvik , or if you prefer to go north, you will find the Styggforsen waterfall and you can take a stroll in the nature reserve and look at the “troll hole” cave located at the foot of the waterfall.

Day 19: RETURN TO STOCKHOLM

For those with Swedish heritage, a stop at the  Dössberget Museum  in Bjursås, just outside  Falun , might be of interest. Even if you don’t have Swedish roots, the great view, atmosphere and lunch makes it well worth a visit. After lunch, continue west to Nusnäs and visit the Grannas  Dala Horse  Workshop. Here at this family-owned workshop from the 1920s you can see how this popular symbol of Sweden is made. You will end the day back in Stockholm. Return your rental car at the airport then make your way to the city where you’ll spend the evening at your leisure.

Driving distance: 311 km / 193 mi Estimated driving duration: 4 hours (without stops)

Day 20: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the  Old Town (Gamla Stan) , where you will find the  Royal Palace , the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.

After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island  Djurgården , a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy  Abba Museum , the  Nordic Museum , the  Gröna Lund  amusement park, and the  Skansen  open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.

Day 21: STOCKHOLM AND DEPARTURE DAY

Enjoy one last Scandinavian breakfast before checking out of your hotel. If you have time, squeeze in some last-minute shopping, go sightseeing, or spend some time relaxing at a café, reflecting on your Scandinavian adventure. Then make your way to the airport in time for your flight home.

Trip of a lifetime

Your employee Juliana is an amazing person. From our first contact with her to actually meeting her in person in Stockholm the day before our trip ended, she provided nothing but friendly and efficient service. Her responses to our many emails before and during the trip were always prompt and thorough. She went over and above anything we would have expected to make this a trip of a lifetime. We combined your Grand Road Trip of Norway, Sweden and Denmark with the Kystriksveien drive in Norway. Juliana was meticulous in making sure our break and then resumption of your itinerary went smoothly. The travel materials, especially the booklet with detailed itinerary and sightseeing suggestions, were very thorough. The maps, already marked with the routes and suggested stops, were very helpful. Even though the car had a good GPS navigation system, we enjoyed seeing where we were on the map.

I am already recommending Nordic Visitor to others. The tour tends to be on the expensive side, but it's worth the comfort of not having to worry about planning, booking, potential issues, etc. In fact, I truly appreciated the fact that Nordic Visitor allowed us to reschedule the trip 1-2 days before we were due to arrive (moving from May to September) - due to my friend getting Covid at the last minute. This would have been impossible without your help!

Tour Information

We recommend that all our travellers read through the following information about driving in Scandinavia, what the tour includes, accommodation and other useful information for your travels.

ABOUT OUR SELF-DRIVE TOURS This is a self-drive tour, which means you will follow a detailed and personalised itinerary during your road trip in Scandinavia. No dedicated driver or tour guide is included. All accommodation, rental vehicle, and other planned activities or added services will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor (as specified in the itinerary). As this is a self-drive tour, you are welcome to stop when and where you choose on your drive. Except for accommodation and booked activities, other highlights we’ve listed in the itinerary are suggestions based on Nordic Visitor favourites.

For inexperienced drivers who still want to explore and discover Scandinavia, we recommend one of our guided small group tours , where you travel with a local, experienced tour leader.

ACCOMMODATION Our team of local travel experts carefully select hotels around the country based on excellent ratings, personal experience and comfort. Please note, that in Scandinavia our room types are based on European standard sizes. For instance, a double bed often consists of two single beds pushed together. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra bed, a rollaway or a sofa bed, and a single room is often smaller than the standard double.

DFDS CRUISE The overnight cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo includes cabin accommodation (comfort or quality cabin with windows) with private facilities, car space and breakfast is included. There are two ships operating on the route, Pearl Seaways and Crown Seaways, and each ship can accommodate approximately 1.800 passengers. On board you find restaurants, bars and activities.

  • Departure from Copenhagen: 14:15
  • Arrival in Oslo: 09:15

DRIVING IN SCANDINAVIA For information on driving in Scandinavia we recommend that you take a look at our travel guide for driving in Norway. It is very similar for the rest of our Nordic countries. There you will find handy information on tolls, ferry routes, tunnels and more! In general, the roads in Scandinavia are of high standard and are well-maintained. Rural roads are generally two lanes and can be narrow and winding, particularly in mountainous areas. Scandinavians drive on the right side of the road.

PARKING IN THE CAPITALS OF SCANDINAVIA Parking and overnight parking at hotels (most hotels in small towns and the countryside have free parking) , fees for parking meters or parking garages, fines for parking violations or towing charges are not included in the package price. Parking fees in Scandinavia are typically between EUR 10 and EUR 50 per night, depending on the type of parking. We always recommend that you inquire about the best parking option when you check in at your hotels.

CURRENCY RATE All bookings are charged in Euros (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. Therefore, conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

AFTER BOOKING WITH NORDIC VISITOR After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Your travel consultant will provide you with details about your booking and your remaining payment (if not paid in full). You will also receive more information about what to expect during your holiday.

CARBON OFFSETTING YOUR TOUR Nordic Visitor is working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours. Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

Giro d'Italia stage 5 Live - Will Jonathan Milan win again?

Tour of scandinavia 2023 route.

Everything you need to know about all five routes across Norway and Denmark

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map

The 2023 Tour of Scandinavia route was reduced to five stages this year, but despite the loss of one stage, the peloton will compete across 574km from Mysen, Norway, to Haderslev, Denmark.

The route will include the mountaintop finish to Norefjell Ski & Spa on stage 2 and a brand-new time trial in Herning on stage 5.

Join Cyclingnews' coverage of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia with race reports, results, photo galleries, news and race analysis.

Stage 1: Mysen to Halden, 124.6km

Stage 2: vikersund to norefjell, 150.5km, stage 3: kongsberg to larvik, 139.9km, stage 4: herning to herning, 16.5km, stage 5: middelfart to haderslev, 143.9km.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

This year's race begins with a flat-ish 124.6km stage from Mysen to Halden. It includes one intermediate sprint at the start of the race in Askim, two categorised climbs at Momarken and then upon entering the final circuit at Friedriksten Fortress. The peloton then races two laps of a local circuit before the finish in Halden.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The second day of racing offers the longest day of the event along hilly terrain with a hilltop finish. The 150.5km stage begins in Vikersund with two intermediate sprints at Vikersund and Noresund. The peloton then races toward the final ascent, which includes the day's main QOM, followed by the last climb to Norefjell Ski & Spa.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

Stage 3 looks like one of the most challenging routes, with a 130.9km race from Kongsberg to Larvik. It is consistently up and down, with two categorised ascents at Vindfjell and Eidanger, with an intermediate sprint in between. The race then ends with a short but sharp climb in the last 1.4km into Larvik.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The peloton will transfer to Denmark for the final two stages beginning with the stage 4 time trial in Herning. It is the first time the event has offered a time trial. The 16.4km route is expected to favour the strongest time trial riders, but there is a technical part in the center of Herning that will give the riders some extra challenges.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The Tour of Scandinavia will conclude with a 143.9km race from Middelfart to Haderslev. The route will include two final ascents at Birkemose golf club and Hejlsminde. There are also two final intermediate sprints at Kolding and Christiansfeld. The peloton will then race onto the finishing circuits in for three final laps around Haderslev.

In their three favorite rally cars, Hammond, Clarkson, and May race from the coasts of Norway to the Russian border

The Grand Tour Returns For A Rally Around Scandinavia In Latest Special

by Sebastien Bell

comments

The Grand Tour will return on September 16, 2022, as the trio of James May, Richard Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson will tour snowy Scandinavia in three all-wheel-drive, rally-inspired cars.

According to Amazon Studios, the special will see Hammond , Clarkson, and May “at the wheel of their three favorite rally cars” embarking “on a catastrophe-filled adventure that takes in Cold War submarine bases, frozen lake racetracks, crashes, and ski resort chaos as they drag their homemade houses from the coast of Norway to the Russian border.”

Although the official challenge is to take their favorite rally car around the northernmost part of Europe, as May and Hammond point out, the Audi that Clarkson chose was built quite a few years after the brand’s rallying heyday .

grand tour scandinavia route

Regardless, the Audi RS4 will take on a Subaru Impreza WRX STI and a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII in a series of challenges that sees the cars towing skiers and cabins and racing through the snow.

In a trailer for the new special, May appears to be driving the yellow Mitsubishi Evo VIII, which apparently was the cause of some distress. As previously reported , while driving through a tunnel at a Norwegian naval base near Tromsø, he reportedly lost control of the car at 75 mph (121 km/h) and crashed into a rock wall.

Indeed, a shot near the end of the trailer appears to show the Mitsubishi sliding sideways into a wall in a tunnel at a particularly high rate of speed. May reportedly suffered at least one broken rib and an impact to the head that bloodied him. Fortunately, the host has been publishing videos on YouTube as recently as three weeks ago , suggesting that he suffered no lasting damage in the incident.

The episode will be titled The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick , a reference to the driving style made famous by Scandinavian rally drivers, who first turned away from a corner, then into it, in order to encourage a vehicle to rotate and slide through a slippery turn.

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Day 1 : Days 1-2 – London And Stockholm

We fly from London Heathrow to Stockholm, our base for two nights.

On Day 2 , we set out on a sightseeing tour of the city that takes us to City Hall, the Royal Palace, Östermalm, Långholm, the Royal Djurgården and the Old Town. Afterwards, we enjoy a well-deserved, traditional Swedish 'fika', or coffee break, relaxing over a hot drink and slice of homemade cake. The rest of your afternoon is free.

Day 2 : Days 3-4 – Östersund And The Inlandsbanan

We board an InterCity train to Östersund today, a city set on the shores of Storsjön Lake which is supposedly home to a mythical monster. This secluded spot is a scenic place to relax and admire the vivid waterside attractions before we continue our journey north on Day 4 . Travelling towards the untamed wilderness of Swedish Lapland, the Inlandsbanan takes us ever closer to the 'Land of the Midnight Sun' through a landscape of pine and birch forests. Enjoy the chance to spot some local wildlife, including moose and reindeer, as we listen to commentary about the sights passing by our windows. We arrive in Sorsele, visiting the Inslandsbanan Museum after disembarking before making our way to a nearby Sami village to learn about the lives of Scandinavia's indigenous people. We spend the night in Arjeplog, where dinner is served around a campfire.

Day 3 : Days 5-6 – Crossing The Arctic Circle And Jokkmokk

Driving even further north, we celebrate as we cross the Arctic Circle on our way to Jokkmokk for the night. Enjoy a free morning on Day 6 to visit the local Sami Museum before riding the famous Ofoten Railway to Narvik. The views that accompany our journey are spectacular; deep, dark fjords, wild and rugged mountain terrain, and barren plateaus that go to show just how remote these far northern reaches really are.

Day 4 : Days 7-8 – Narvik And The Nordland Railway

Narvik was a key battleground in WWII, and with free time today, you could find out more about the vital role it played with a visit to the local war museum.

On Day 8 , we transfer to Fauske by coach, where we join the Nordland Railway, also known as the 'Polar Express', for the journey to Verdal. Along the way we marvel at the ever-changing scenery as clear blue skies reflect the water of sparkling fjords and the spectacular Svartisen Glacier extends from the mountains into the valley below. From Verdal, we transfer to Stiklestad for the night.

Day 5 : Days 9-10 - Stiklestad And Trondheim

We enjoy a tour of Stiklestad this morning, the site of King Olav's death in 1030 during one of Norway's most famous historical battles. Afterwards, our coach takes us to the popular Viking city of Trondheim.

Discovering the history of Trondheim on Day 10 's guided tour, we see the Old Quarter, the colourful waterfront houses of Bakklandet, the Gothic architecture of Nidaros Cathedral and the sumptuous Royal Residence. The rest of your day is free to continue sightseeing at your own pace.

Day 11 - The Rauma Railway

Joining the 71-mile-long Rauma Railway to Åndalsnes, we enjoy a spectacular journey through magnificent and contrasting landscapes. Following the same course as the emerald waters of the River Rauma most of the way, the train winds its way elegantly around the surrounding hillsides as we make our approach past the insurmountable 'Troll Wall' to the banks of the peaceful Romsdal Fjord. Stepping off the train into the fresh, crisp air, we continue by coach to Geiranger for two nights.

Day 12 - Geirangerfjord

Today we enjoy a relaxing fjord cruise across Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its unique setting. A nine-mile-long branch of the Storfjord (meaning 'Great Fjord'), the magnificent Geirangerfjord boasts towering walls that overlook some of Europe's finest scenery. As we sail, a number of high waterfalls - including the Seven Sisters and the Suitor, plunge straight from the forested cliff edge to the smooth waters below. Back on dry land, we return to Geiranger via Hellesylt.

Day 13 - Flåm

Leaving Geiranger by coach, we continue our scenic travels through Norway's incredible fjord country, pausing en route at the incredible Dalsnibba viewing point and ancient Kaupanger stave church. We reach Flåm at the head of Aurlandsfjord and check into our hotel for the night.

Day 14 - The Flåm Railway To Bergen

Today we enjoy a superb excursion aboard the iconic Flåm Railway. The train twists and turns as it takes us into the mountains along one of the steepest lines in the world, stopping beside the powerful Kjosfossen Falls before reaching the high-altitude station at Myrdal and making the return journey back to Flåm. Here, we board a luxury eco boat for a cruise across Sognefjord to meet the coach transferring us to Bergen.

Day 10 : Days 15-17 - Bergen, Oslo, And London

We set off on a guided tour of Bergen this morning, a harbour city surrounded by seven striking mountains and known for the wonderfully-preserved medieval buildings of its Bergenhus district. We stop for a delicious seafood lunch at the picturesque fish market before taking a coach tour of Bergen's dramatic bridges.

We board the train to Oslo on Day 16 , travelling along Northern Europe's highest railway line, the Bergen Railway. Sights to look out for include the pretty Hallingdal Valley, through which the Hallingdalselva River flows to Lake Krøderen, and the mountain of Norefjell. Having passed through towns and villages such as Geilo, Gol and Flå, the backdrop begins to become more urban as we begin our approach into Norway's capital city.

On Day 17 , we head to the airport for our flight back to London Heathrow.

This trip follows the fast E18 highway as it sweeps east of Oslo, across Sweden to the port of Kapellskär, on Sweden’s east coast, then continues to Turku in Finland, then finally onto Helsinki.

The first leg of the road trip, from Oslo to Stockholm, is a 600km journey that takes around seven hours. After around 220km you’ll reach the elegant lakeside town of Karlstad , which makes a good place for a lunchtime break.

Alternatively, you can carry on to another pretty lakeside town, Örebro, which is home to a 13th-century castle. The road continues east, running just north of Stockholm , but you’d be mad to miss out on visiting Sweden’s beautiful capital, which makes a great first-night stop.

The next day, it’s a 90km drive to Kapellskär, where you can catch a ferry (8–9 hours) in Finland. The ferry goes via the attractive Åland archipelago, a cluster of Swedish-speaking islands that belong to Finland and lie roughly half-way between the two countries.

Once docked at Naantali, it’s a short (15km) drive to Turku, Finland’s oldest city and former capital, and a great place to spend your second night.

The following day, it’s a 165km drive to the lively but laid-back seafront capital Helsinki , where you can enjoy boat trips galore and some great free attractions .

Renting a car in Scandinavia

Scandinavia is relatively easy to explore using public transport, but if you want to tackle any of these road trips you’re going to need some wheels.

Renting a car is easy and you can almost always take vehicles from one country to another without any hassle or extra charges – but be sure to double check this at the time of booking.

We recommend Rentalcars.com, which lets you compare rental prices from all of the main providers. Search below to find a car for your trip!

Copenhagen to Oslo

Total distance: 600km

The Øresund bridge from Denmark to Sweden

Short on time and want a quick intro to Scandinavia? This road trip takes you through three countries and two capital cities – plus you’ll get to drive across that iconic bridge.

This trip starts in Copenhagen and ends in Oslo , but much of the journey is spent following the Swedish coastline. From Copenhagen, it’s just a 45-minute drive across the Øresund bridge ( a rather hefty toll is payable ), to the likeable city of Malmö in Sweden. Here, you can pick up the E20 to Gothenburg , then the E6 to Oslo.

You can do the whole trip in around seven hours, but it’s better to take your time to stop en route and enjoy the scenery. If you have more time, the sleepier towns of Helsingborg and Varberg make for good places to break the journey.

If you’re not sure about driving, this guide shows you how to get from Copenhagen to Oslo with public transport.

Bergen to Trondheim through Norway’s fjordland

Total distance: 920km

Driving down to the Geirangerfjord is one of the highlights of the Scandinavian road trip

There are several different routes from Norway’s second city (Bergen) to its third (Trondheim).

The fastest and most direct tours sticks to the main roads, but where’s the fun in that? A more spectacular route heads north via Geirangerfjord , zig-zagging up mountains passes and over ferries, taking in gushing waterfalls and some of Norway’s most dramatic scenery.

You could do the whole journey with two long days of driving, but this is not a route you’ll want to rush – you’re best off taking a few days to make the most of landscape, and give yourself plenty of time to stop off for some walks.

Good stopping points along the way are the pretty fjordside villages of Balestrand and Geiranger, the attractive Art Nouveau town of Ålesund and the coastal town of Kristiansund.

Höga Kusten, Sweden

Total distance: around 100km

The High Coast road in Sweden is home to some dramatic scenery

Running along the ‘world’s highest coastline’, this stunning scenic drive may be short, but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in drama.

In the province of Ångermanland, in north eastern Sweden, the E4 highway heads north from the town of Härnösand to Örnsköldsvik, though a landscape formed during the Ice Age and now protected by Unesco heritage status.

The Höga Kusten (or ‘High Coast’) drive passes through pine forests and deep valleys, plus high red granite cliffs and rock formations, with dramatic views over the islands and coastline of Gulf of Bothnia.

If you fancy stopping off en route, it’s a just short detour off the E4 to the Skuleskogen National Park, where there are some awesome hikes and trails to enjoy.

The Atlantic Road, Norway

Total distance: 65km

The Atlantic Road, Norway

Frequently dubbed ‘the world’s most beautiful drive’, and not without reason, the Atlantic Road runs from Bud to Kristiansund along Norway’s west coast.

The route connects the island of Averøy to the mainland, via a series of eight bridges and islets that run for more than 8km – a serious feat of engineering.

The road zigs-zags and switchbacks along the coast, crossing the mouth of a fjord, with waves often crashing alongside the cars.

Make sure you take time to stop at some of the scenic viewpoints along the way! The Askevågen viewpoint juts out over the sea about 10km north of Bud, while the Eldhusøya viewpoint, another 20km or so further along, includes a 700-metre path that runs along the top of the visitor centre out around a rocky headland for fantastic sea views.

Three-week Scandinavia itinerary

  • Route: Copenhagen -> Gothenburg -> Stockholm -> Oslo -> Trondheim -> Bodø -> Lofoten Islands -> Tromsø

Planning to spend three weeks travelling around Scandinavia? Lucky you! This itinerary will take you through the region’s capital cities before heading to Northern Norway for a glimpse of the country’s wild, unspoiled wilderness and (hopefully!) the northern lights.

You could follow this itinerary any time of the year, but Northern Norway is especially magical during the winter months — and, of course, it’s also the best time to see the northern lights .

Speaking of the northern lights, Tromsø — a small city located 350km north of the Arctic Circle — is renowned for being one of the best places in Europe to witness the remarkable phenomenon that is the aurora borealis. If you have your heart set on seeing those otherworldly celestial lights dancing in the night sky, plan to spend at least a few days here to increase your chances of spotting them.

Can’t-miss sights and experiences in Scandinavia

Now that you’ve got your itinerary sorted, it’s time to start planning the most exciting part of your Scandinavia sojourn: everything you’re going to see and do in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Fuel your wanderlust and get even more amped up about your trip with these can’t-miss attractions and experiences.

  • Sail Norway’s fjords. It’s no secret that Norway has some of the most astonishingly beautiful fjords on the planet. There are more than 1,000 fjords dotted around the country’s coastline, but Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord are two of the most famous.
  • Visit Copenhagen’s famous landmarks. The colourful facades at Nyhavn, the famous Little Mermaid statue, and Tivoli Gardens are a few musts when you’re sightseeing in Denmark’s laid-back capital.
  • Go island-hopping around the Stockholm Archipelago. Made up of roughly 30,000 islands, this is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle and go hiking, sea kayaking, or cycling alongside fields of wildflowers and sweeping views of the Baltic Sea.
  • Try an open-faced sandwich. Smörgås in Swedish, smørrebrød in Danish, smørbrød in Norwegian — the pronunciation of this traditional Scandinavian sandwich may change depending on which country you’re in, but one thing they all have in common? They’re delicious (and you have to try one while you’re in this part of the world).

A traditional red and yellow house on the water with mountains in the background in the Lofoten Islands, Norway

  • See the stunning landscapes of the Lofoten Islands. You’ve probably seen photos of the Lofoten Islands’ craggy mountains and idyllic fishing villages on Instagram, but nothing compares to seeing the rugged beauty of this remote archipelago in person.
  • Explore Denmark’s fairy tale castles. Frederiksborg Castle (which can be visited on an easy day trip from Copenhagen) is a highlight for any castle fanatic, but there are plenty of grand palaces scattered throughout the country.
  • Celebrate Midsummer in Sweden. Thinking of heading to Scandinavia in June? Try to plan your visit to coincide with Swedish Midsummer, an annual festival that celebrates the start of summer with traditional food, music, and a whole lot of pickled herring and schnapps.
  • See the northern lights . Head to Tromsø — Norway’s gateway to the Arctic — for the chance to cross this once-in-a-lifetime experience off your bucket list.

Getting around Scandinavia

Thanks to an extensive network of train, ferry, and bus services, travelling between Scandinavian countries is both easy and convenient.

Express trains are available between popular destinations (like Copenhagen and Stockholm, for example) and overnight trains are ideal for longer journeys. However, like almost everything else in Scandinavia, train tickets are expensive. Booking ahead and buying an Interrail or Eurail pass will help to keep costs down.

Buses are surprisingly comfortable in Scandinavia, and they offer a viable alternative to the region’s rail network. It’s also worth noting buses are the best transport method of choice when travelling to remote destinations or around the northern reaches of Sweden and Norway.

Mountains and a waterfall in Geirangerfjord, Norway

If you’re short on time — and if you’re planning to travel to the far north — hopping on a flight with a local carrier is your best bet.

Ferries are also an essential part of the Scandinavia travel experience, so don’t forget to pack your motion sickness remedies.

Keep in mind that it may be more difficult to get around the northern part of Sweden and Norway during the winter — especially if you’re planning to rent a car or travel by bus. It’s entirely possible to run into service disruptions or road closures due to inclement weather, so extra planning and preparation is necessary for a Scandinavian holiday in winter.

What does your dream Scandinavian itinerary look like? Let us know in the comments!

Richard Hammond Expresses ‘Selfish Relief’ in The Grand Tour’s Latest Scandi Flick Episode After Avoiding Crash

In the latest episode of The Grand Tour , Richard Hammond revealed his ‘selfish relief’ at avoiding a crash, while co-host James May suffered a shocking accident. This revelation was part of the thrilling Scandi Flick special on Amazon Prime, marked by high-speed drama and unexpected turns.

Key Takeaways:

  • During The Grand Tour’s new Scandi Flick episode, James May experienced a serious crash into a tunnel wall, resulting in a hospital stay. His fellow presenters, Hammond and Clarkson, continued their journey in the Scandinavian night, highlighting the unpredictability and danger in their high-speed adventures.
  • The episode features a tense segment where the presenters race through a dark tunnel, culminating in May’s crash, described by producer Andy Wilman as a moment of ‘red mist descending’. This crash starkly contrasts with the usually cautious approach of ‘Captain Slow’ May.
  • Richard Hammond, who has previously survived a near-fatal crash, comments on the incident, expressing a mix of relief and concern. He underscores the genuine risks involved in filming for The Grand Tour, stating, “There’s no protective TV bubble. Accidents can happen.”

The most recent episode of The Grand Tour, ‘A Scandi Flick’, has been nothing short of a dramatic spectacle. Featuring the well-known trio of Jeremy Clarkson , James May, and Richard Hammond, this special episode streamed on Amazon Prime has captured the audience with its thrilling and perilous adventures across Scandinavia.

Richard Hammond, often the center of past mishaps, expressed a mix of relief and humor at being on the sidelines this time.

“I think selfishly I was more relieved than anything else that somebody had taken the focus off me,” he shared with The Mirror and other press. He added humorously: “It’s much nicer not being the one who’s had the accident, but being one of the ones watching it. I think I might go that route in future.”

The episode’s highlight was undoubtedly the harrowing tunnel segment. Jeremy Clarkson, leading the time trials, navigated the dark, narrow tunnel in a nail-biting scene, fortunately emerging unscathed. However, it was James May, known for his cautious driving style, whose crash left everyone in shock. Producer Andy Wilman described the moment as the ‘red mist descending’, as May lost control and collided with the tunnel wall.

Hammond, reflecting on his own near-fatal crash in 2006, acknowledged the inherent dangers of their stunts.

“We’ve learned and now James has learnt better than most people that just because you’re doing it for TV doesn’t mean things can’t go wrong,” he stated solemnly.

His words were a reminder of the very real risks involved in their adventurous filming.

James May, discussing the aftermath, revealed the damage was more to the car than himself. Despite the dramatic impact, May and some local mechanics managed to salvage the vehicle.

“I didn’t think it was going to go again, but with a bit of help from some ingenious local mechanics – obviously I couldn’t do very much because my rib hurt – but they squeezed it back into shape,” May recounted.

The episode, filled with high-speed challenges, unexpected crashes, and the trio’s signature banter, has once again demonstrated the blend of danger and entertainment that The Grand Tour offers its viewers.

2 Week Road Trips Through Scandinavia: Your Guide

Scandinavia is a Northern European region that encompasses the countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. With lush countryside, stunning coastline and rugged mountains, it's ideal for a road trip. Plus, take the wheel and you can stop whenever you want to take in the breathtaking views and attractions.

If you're interested in going on a  Scandinavia road trip of 2 weeks, there are plenty of options. You could spend time exploring one country, delve into a specific region, or even tour all 3 Scandinavian countries in a single itinerary.

Read on for inspiration and suggestions on how you can plan an unforgettable tour. Here we'll give you our insider recommendations on the best road trip routes in Scandinavia.

Road trips in Sweden

Sweden is the country of ABBA, a thousand isles (or more like 200,000!), sleek design, and  fika coffee break . Stockholm, its capital, is fantastic for a city break, but have you ever thought of visiting the other  Swedish cities and countryside? You’ll be surprised what you find.

Read about visiting  Sweden in summer or winter to decide on the best time for you. In winter, we recommend independent train and cruise travel so you can sit back and relax.

Tour the 3 big Swedish cities

With 2 weeks in Sweden, you could travel between Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg. You’ll enjoy the mix of urban vibes, with interactive museums and grand royal palaces, and the superb nature and tranquil oases along the way.

Journey from Stockholm to the lush area around Lake Vättern where you could go for some wild swimming. Then drive through the scenic Swedish province of Småland to visit historic ruins and castles.

Cross onto the island of Öland and wander through the limestone plateau of Stora Alvaret , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You then follow the coast south to Ystad and then north toward Gothenburg. As you’re travelling at your own pace you can stop at quaint villages and sandy beaches along the way.

road through swedish countryside

Journey north to Sunne through the Swedish forest. Enjoy the scenery and, if the weather allows, stop for another lake swim. Sweden is the perfect place for immersing yourself in nature. Finally, we recommend spending some time in the Dalarna county. It is one of the most popular areas to visit in Sweden.

Good to know: This is one example of a tour you could take around Sweden. But Nordic Visitor itineraries can be tailored. Maybe you want to spend more time in certain locations or extend your trip. Just ask our Swedish travel experts !

Road trips in Norway

Norway is known for its fantastic hiking opportunities, scenic fjords, and Viking history. As Norway is another large country, you'll have many possibilities for places to visit on a 2-week road trip. Here are our two favourite suggestions:

West coast: Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger

You may be able to drive this itinerary of 700 kilometres (435 miles) in a few days. But you can spend as much time as you wish along the way. It’s the beauty of a road trip as you choose where and what you stop to see.

Bergen to Trondheim will take you inland via the lovely town of Loen , nestled between mountains. And on the way back, you’ll follow the beautiful coast of Norway. Explore the majestic fjords, renowned worldwide for their grandeur and beauty.

You’ll also get to experience the Atlantic Ocean Road , one of Norway’s most scenic drives. Then sail south again, via Bergen, all the way to Stavanger . You could even take time to hike up the iconic Pulpit Rock too.

  • Browse Norwegian self-drive tours for a memorable road trip

eagle road in norway

Complete tour from Oslo

Soak up the countryside and mountains as well as the western fjords on this tour of Norway's southern regions. Although it leaves out the north (we think it’s worth its own holiday!) this road trip will take you through a variety of cities, villages, and natural landscapes.

You’ll get to admire what Norway has to offer on a complete tour from Oslo to the west coast and back. Along the way you'll discover the fjords, high peaks, fishing villages, and so much more.

Here are the 10 best things to do with 2 weeks in Norway :

  • Stroll through Norway’s grand capital,  Oslo
  • Wander through the Rondane National Park and visit Røros
  • Visit the dramatic fjord landscape and maybe even go kayaking
  • Experience the quaint village of  Flåm and its steep railway
  • See the west coast city of Bergen and all its highlights
  • Drive the exciting routes of  Trollstigen , the Atlantic Road and  Eagle Road
  • Take in the stunning views surrounding Loen
  • Marvel at the ethereal waterfalls  Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil
  • Explore the medieval city and historic capital of Norway, Trondheim
  • Spend time in the Olympic town of  Lillehammer

Scandinavian triangle

When it comes to an unforgettable road trip through Scandinavia, we recommend visiting all 3 countries in one tour. Sweden, Denmark and Norway are close together, well-connected, and share similar historical and cultural aspects. For that reason, the region as a whole makes for a fantastic destination.

To get a taste of all 3 nations, we recommend visiting the capitals: Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. This way you can discover these grand cities of Scandinavia , with their entertaining museums, gourmet cuisine, and royal palaces. And between the capitals, spend time enjoying the beautiful countryside.

You can even choose whether you'd like to drive, along Sweden’s south-west coast, or take the ferry between Copenhagen and Oslo. If you opt for the ferry, you'll board a large ship with your car and spend a night sailing along the Kattegat Strait.

Iceland’s Ring Road

Although not part of Scandinavia, Iceland is an absolute must see in the Nordics. And as it's THE place for a road trip, we had to include it.

Route 1, also nicknamed the Ring Road, circles Iceland, connecting nearly all the regions of the island. With 2 weeks, you’ll have plenty of time to visit the attractions and soak up the scenery along the way.

Highlights on a 2-week tour of Iceland include:

  • Spending time exploring Reykjavík , Iceland's lively capital city
  • Discovering the 3 most famous attractions on the Golden Circle  route
  • Walking along the  Diamond Beach to see the glistening ice scattered on the shore
  • Marvelling at the top waterfalls around the country
  • Seeing the massive floating icebergs at the  Jökulsárlón g lacier lagoon
  • Strolling through the quaint streets of  Akureyri , the capital of the north
  • Exploring Iceland's beautiful national parks: Vatnajökull , Þingvellir and Snæfellsjökull
  • Journeying through the volcanic  Lake Mývatn area
  • Enjoying the striking nature of the Snæfellsnes peninsula

You could also add in the remote, but spectacular Westfjords to your itinerary to get a complete tour of the island.

Suggestion for a 2-week Scandinavian road trip itinerary

If you would like to take a  2-week tour around the region and want to include all 3 countries, here is our suggestion.

This itinerary is available with Nordic Visitor, but you can always ask our travel experts to tailor your tour. If you’d rather drive via Gothenburg, add day trips, or even include a Finland cruise to see Helsinki, just ask!

Day 1 – Welcome to Sweden

Fly into Stockholm and, depending on when you arrive, spend some time wandering around the capital city of Sweden. Stroll along the shopping street Drottninggatan and explore the surrounding area of Östermalm. You’ll find interesting shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Scandinavian culture.

Spend the night in Stockholm.

Day 2 – Full day in Stockholm

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. Start with a walk around the Old Town (Gamla Stan). Here you’ll find the Royal Palace, the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobblestone streets and medieval houses.

Later, head to Djurgården, a cultural oasis that's just a short ferry ride away. You could visit the kitschy Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Skansen open-air museum.

Spend another night in Stockholm.

Day 3 – Into the Swedish countryside

Today you pick up your rental car and kick off your road trip toward the south of Sweden. Your destination is Kalmar, a medieval city with a rich history, making it a perfect stop for history buffs. In the old town, you can visit Kalmar Castle, which dates back over 800 years.

Spend the night in Kalmar.

kalmar castle in sweden

Day 4 – A day at leisure in Öland

From Kalmar, cross onto Öland, a region characterised by sandy beaches, a beautiful coastline, and a vast agricultural landscape. Enjoy the scenery and bask in the quietness of this island. Two highlights include Solliden Palace, the summer residence of the Swedish royal family, and Stora Alvaret, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend another night in Kalmar.

Day 5 – Sweden’s south coast

Your first visit today, on your way to Sweden’s most southern region, is at the naval city of Karlskrona, another Swedish World Heritage site.

Before you reach the charming town of Ystad, there are many stops along the way that might interest you. These include Kiviks Musteri and the fortress of Glimmingehus, which dates back to the middle ages.

Spend the night in Ystad.

Day 6 – Explore Skåne

Drive through splendid Skåne and the area of Österlen today. You can stop at quaint villages, sandy beaches and historical sites, and don’t forget to taste the local cuisine. We recommend stopping by the popular Ales Stenar stone ship monument, which offers a picturesque view of the Baltic Sea.

Spend another night in Ystad.

Day 7 – Explore Copenhagen

Drive to Smygehuk, the southernmost point in Sweden, before continuing on to the old towns of Skanör and Falsterbo where you will encounter long stretches of white sand beaches. Next, arrive in the charming capital city of Denmark, Copenhagen. Take time to explore the colourful harbour, Nyhavn, and the amusement park, Tivoli Gardens.

Spend the night in Copenhagen.

Day 8 – Set sail for Norway

Spend the morning at your leisure in Copenhagen. You could visit popular landmarks such as Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace, and the famous Little Mermaid statue, or even take a canal boat tour. In the late afternoon, you’ll board your cruise to Oslo.

Spend the night on the ferry.

Day 9 – Arrival in Norway

This morning you’ll sail along the Oslo Fjord, so admire the view before arriving in Norway’s capital. You then have the rest of the day to visit some of Oslo’s highlights. We recommend the historical  Royal Palace , the mighty Akershus Fortress, the modern Oslo Opera House, and the  Aker Brygge area along the harbour.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 10 – Explore the capital, Oslo

You have a full day to explore Oslo as much as you want. We recommend visiting the beautiful  Vigeland Sculpture Park and the  Holmenkollen Ski Museum and tower. You could also learn about history at the Kon-Tiki Museum or simply stroll along the popular Karl Johans street.

Spend another night in Oslo.

Day 11 – Scenic drive to Örebro

From Oslo, cross back into Sweden and drive all the way to the city of Örebro. Along the way, make a stop at Karlstad, which is known as the "City of Sunshine". You could also visit Kristinehamn where you find a 15-metre-tall Picasso sculpture which was donated to the city by the artist in 1964.

Spend the night in Örebro.

Day 12 – Leisure day in Örebro

You could visit the 14th-century Örebro Castle and the Wadköping open-air museum, with buildings that date back to the 17th century. Another suggestion for quiet walks is to wander through the large public park, Slottsparken (Palace Park).

Spend another night in Örebro.

Day 13 – Drive back to Stockholm

Your first stop today is at the open-air museum Rademachersmedjorna. This area is famous for its many castles and manor houses, including the 16th-century Gripsholm Castle. After a day of sightseeing, you’ll return to Stockholm to drop off your rental car.

Day 14 - Departure

Enjoy one last Scandinavian breakfast and visit some more sights before it is time to fly home.

Other ways to travel around Scandinavia

There are many ways to see the countries and regions of Scandinavia. If you would rather enjoy the view than drive around, you could go on a guided tour or travel independently via public transportation.

With two weeks, the possibilities are endless. You could sail through the Norwegian fjords and discover the capitals of Finland and Estonia, Helsinki and Tallinn. Or, pair your trip around Scandinavia with some day tours in Iceland to take in another culture.

Independent travel in Scandinavia

If you would like to discover Scandinavia on your own but prefer not to drive, then an independent tour is the perfect choice. Public transportation in Scandinavia is fast, reliable and punctual, so getting around by train and ferry is a great alternative to driving.

On top of visiting the Scandinavian capitals, you could add a Norway in a Nutshell tour to your itinerary. You’ll take train rides, cruises and buses to see some of the most iconic locations in Norway.

Independent travel is ideal for  winter tours as driving conditions can make it a bit harder to get around. And you may have the added bonus of seeing the northern lights  inside the Arctic Circle.

Winter is also a good time to go up into  Northern Norway , Svalbard , or Lapland , which encompasses the northern regions of Finland and Sweden. Stay in an Ice Hotel , go dog sledding or visit the Santa Claus Village .
