Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef submarine reef tours permit passengers to truly submerge themselves into the underwater world of the beautiful coral and exotic marine creatures of one of Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks.

The only company which currently operates Great Barrier Reef submarine tours is based on Fitzroy Island , which takes 45 minutes to reach by ferry from Cairns. The island is a national park filled with mountains, rainforests, and a coastline encircling the Great Barrier Reef.

Only two people at a time can experience the Great Barrier Reef submarine reef tours departing from Fitzroy Island’s main beach, allowing for a truly intimate experience. Stinger suits and masks are provided, but passengers must bring their own sunscreen, swimwear, towels, and sunglasses.

All passengers receive instructions and safety briefings before a safety diver guides them into the submarine. The safety diver accompanies the submarine during the entire excursion, while the submarine pilot doubles as a tour guide providing vivid descriptions of the surrounding sea life and corals. The submarine never ventures very far from the shore during this 20-minute journey.

As the submarine contains no hatches, passengers can enjoy a true Great Barrier Reef diving experience without needing scuba diving equipment. Although the entire journey is less than a half-hour long, T-shirts and photo CDs are available so memories can last a lifetime.

scuber on the great barrier reef near heron island in queensland, australia

ScUber is the world's first rideshare submarine, based off Heron Island and the Agincourt reef outside of Cairns in Queensland, Australia.

You can now hail an Uber to the Great Barrier Reef

For a limited time, the ride-sharing service will operate a submarine in the world’s largest reef system.

There’s something undeniably Bond-like about lowering yourself through the roof hatch of a mini-submarine. But this is no Hollywood movie. Today, I’m among the first members of the public to ride the scUber—the world’s first underwater Uber—on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. National Geographic Explorer and pioneering submarine pilot Erika Bergman sits at the wheel (in this case, a PlayStation 4 controller); it’s even better than a Bond movie.

family walking on beach at sunset on heron island queensland australia

Describing herself as “a scientist with a love of machines,” Bergman studied chemical oceanography while working in the engine rooms of ships before segueing into submarine piloting. The 31-year-old Canadian is now the Chief Pilot for Vancouver-based Aquatica Submarines , and as she expertly maneuvers the scUber (a Stingray 500-01 model sub affectionately known as Barry) below the waves off Heron Island , I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have as my Uber driver. ( Here are 10 more underwater adventures around the world that don't require scuba certification. )

“Piloting a sub is actually quite easy, but it takes a lot of practice, and a lot of multitasking,” explains Bergman as the world’s largest living organism begins to take shape through the aquamarine abyss. While I felt a little claustrophobic in the scUber when it was bobbing on the ocean’s surface before we descended, the spherical acrylic window seems to disappear when we’re underwater, making the cozy cockpit feel almost roomy.

erika bergman pilot of scUber

National Geographic Explorer Erika Bergman pilots the ScUber into the depths of the ocean with a PlayStation 4 controller.

“When you’re diving or snorkeling your peripheral vision is cut off, but in here it’s like you’re in the aquarium rather than standing outside of one looking in,” Bergman says as we cruise at a depth of about 40 feet (the sub has a maximum depth of 500 feet, but will hover between 30 and 65 feet for scUber rides). Indeed, while the curve of the window makes the marine life appear about 30 percent smaller than it actually is, the breadth of vision is one of a kind.

The world’s largest aquarium is a little quiet this afternoon, with the changing tide limiting visibility to less than 30 feet, and the huge green turtle spotted by Bergman’s first passengers of the day now nowhere to be seen. But there’s still plenty going on. As we make a pass alongside the reef wall, the scUber is enveloped by a school of yellow-tailed fusiliers. Edging closer, we spot a gaggle of of tiny blue chromis fish shimmering in the sunlight as black-and-white-striped banner fish dart between the spiky stag corals beneath them. So unbothered is the marine life by our presence that even the multicolored giant clams that typically slam shut when divers glide by don’t even flinch when we hover over them. ( Read more about the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site. )

Relegated to simply pointing at cool marine life when I’m scuba diving, the ability to discuss what we’re seeing—while staying warm and dry—is a luxury. And with cameras in the scUber rolling on every trip, scUber passengers also make a contribution to reef science without even knowing it.

“Citizen science tourism is a fantastic way of subsidising research,” says Bergman, who piloted the Stingray on a groundbreaking expedition to the bottom of Belize ’s Great Blue Hole last December with Richard Branson and Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. Following the scUber’s tenure on the Great Barrier Reef, Bergman will travel to the British Virgin Islands to work with Unite BVI , a not-for-profit supported by Branson. “Selling some tourist seats will help to find a baseline study of the reef since Hurricane Irma blew through (in 2017) to give us an idea of how quickly the reef can recover after such catastrophic weather events,” Bergman says.

Before I know it, our hour is up, and as we near the surface, I’m surprised to discover that my ears pop just as they do when I’m on an airplane coming into land. Having also discovered that my sensitivity to motion sickness also applies to submarines, I’m somewhat relieved to climb out of the scUber. I can’t deny, however, that it was one hell of a ride.

“Don’t forget to rate your driver,” winks Bergman.

How to take the scUber ride

Rideshare company Uber partnered with the Australian state of Queensland and the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef for this limited time experience from May to June 2019. Riders in select Australian cities may request the scUber through the app for approximately $2,070 for two people, including a round-trip helicopter flight from Queensland to the submarine's locations in Heron Island or Port Douglas, plus a one-hour tour of the Great Barrier Reef in the submarine vessel. Proceeds will help the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, a network of locals, influencers, and organizations working to conserve the vital habitat battling climate change and other threats. Based on the success of the inaugural ride, scUber may become an annual offering in the Great Barrier Reef or expand to other locations worldwide.

worlds first scuba uber ride in the great barrier reef hear heron island, queensland, australia

The scUber reaches the depths of 65 feet below sea level while keeping passengers warm and dry.

Plan your trip: Heron Island

Get there: Take a 30 minute helicopter ride or sail two hours by catamaran from Gladstone, Queensland to Heron Island Resort . The scenic route past iridescent coral reefs gives travelers a taste of what’s to come when visiting Heron Island.

Iconic water: Upon arrival, don a pair of reef shoes (provided by the resort) for a walk around the petite island, less than half a mile long, surrounded by crystal blue water teaming with fish, baby reef sharks, various corals, and crabs.

Birding stop: Not to be outdone, birds dominate the sound of the island. During the summer months, see the migration of some 200,000 birds, such as egrets, white-bellied sea eagles, buff banded rails, and white capped noddy’s.

Go deep: Take a tour of the University of Queensland Research Station led by scientific officer Sam Morison, who will reveal the latest scientific research in the area, then introduce you to the touch tank where you can encounter coral and small animals up close. All animals are returned to the reef unharmed.

Insider tip: Start the day off early with a snorkel off the jetty and visit the H.M.C.S Protector, the shipwreck at the entrance of the harbor you’ll find sharks, schools of fish, turtles, various rays and shovel nose guitar fish alongside the healthy coral reef.

bartender making old fashioned at rocco restaurant in cairns queensland australia

Plan your trip: Cairns

Get there: Considered the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, this northern Queensland city of 150,000 holds an international airport with domestic flights throughout Australia.

Explore: The esplanade provides a perfect backdrop to evening strolls. Dip in to the night market to nosh on buffet’s of chinese food and pick up trinkets from drawings to imitation designer bags. Full of night life, restaurants, pubs streaming football games and coffee houses stay open into the night.

Stay: Rest your head at the newly opened Riley Hotel and grab a cocktail as the sun goes down on the rooftop restaurant Rocco.

Clownfish (Nemo) on the Great Barrier Reef - Frankland Island

Nemo (Anemonefish)

Instantly recognizable due to its bright orange colouring and distinctive white stripes, the clownfish – which is also known as the anemonefish – gained worldwide fame thanks to the 2003 film Finding Nemo. Many clownfish call Frankland Islands home, so you’ll be able to Find Nemo easily!

Hard and Soft Corals

There are all sorts of different corals that can be seen from the semi-sub including slow-growing boulder corals, fast-growing branching and plate corals, deep corals with big tentacles to catch food, brain corals, honeycomb corals, lettuce corals (pictured), and many more.

Giant Clam

Giant Clams

Many of the giant clams around Normanby Island are over 80 years old! They filter the water for food and keep algae in their skin (like coral) to get energy from the sun. They even have eyes, and will close up their shell quickly to scare off any approaching predators!

great barrier reef tour submarine

In between the coral heads, you will often see a range of fish feeding at the bottom including parrotfish (pictured), butterflyfish and cleaner wrasses. Some graze on the algae, like herds of wildebeest, others searching for snails and crustaceans under the rubble and sand to nibble on.

Echinoderms (Starfish)

There are many members of the Echinodermata family that live around Normanby Island that you can see on your Semi-Sub tour, including starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Interestingly, most echinoderms are able to regenerate tissue, organs, and limbs.

Sea Turtles

During your semi-sub tour, you’re very likely to see our company mascot – the sea turtle! We are lucky to have two species of endangered sea turtles found around Frankland Islands: the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), and the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).

Could not have been happier with our day. Great guides, easy down river trip and across to the island with stunning views. The island itself was beautiful and incredibly isolated, it was a small personal tour that was highly enjoyable. You should definitely do the guided snorkel tour if you do the day trip

Perfection! Having the option of semi sub tour, sup, snorkelling on your own, snorkel safari in group, island tour, beautiful lunch and an ideallic island setting is superb for a family wanting to explore Great Barrier reef and not be stuck on a boat the whole day. Swimming above coral, colourful marine life, fish and swam with turtles! Would love to go again! Thank you crew we have wonderful memories.

It was am amazing experience! I got picked up by a coach in the morning, the coach was well ventilated, drove for about an hour in that until we hour to the ferry. The boat trip was about an hour long too where I saw beautiful sights of nature! They provided free drinks and snacks both ways in the ferry and lunch was also included in the island! They can provide something for every dietary requirement, including vegan.

What a hidden gem this tour was. Beautiful island, river cruise and great reef. Nice small group. Had the island to ourselves. Knowledgeable, friendly crew. Fabulous value. Will definitely be recommending this trip.

Highlight of the holiday!! Can’t recommend enough: we were picked up outside our hotel in the morning, drove to the boat where we had a great trip down the Mulgrave river before another 30 min on the sea and we arrived at the island. Variety of activities available from free snorkelling in a watched boundary and a snorkel tour a bit further out, to a semi-submersible and rainforest island tour where you can see in rock pools. The semi-sub was a little murky so if you enjoyed the snorkelling tour, I’d carry on on your own, as it’s what you saw before, but less clear, but if you’re not comfortable snorkeling, then it’s a great alternative to see the corals.

Excellent day tour to a great little island. Crew were wonderful and provided an overall fabulous experience. Suitable for most all ages/abilities and can do as much or as little as you like. Highly recommend.

Very well organized. Staff was amazing!! Something for everyone. You had your choice of snorkeling, glass bottom boat, kayaks, sup, guided nature walk ( totally amazing and interesting!) and there was even a treasure hunt for young kids. Food and snacks were great as well! Highly recommend!

Had a great day out on Frankland Island Reef Cruises. You can do as much or as little as you want on the island so perfect if you want to snorkel and spend lots of time in the water or just sit on the beach in the sun listening to the birds. The boat trip over is pretty short so good if boat travel isn’t your thing. Semi-sub trip is great if you are not a confident swimmer or fan of snorkeling. The information is interesting and while not crystal clear its a good reminder the reef can survive & flourish but we can do lots to help in our everyday life. Loads of food for lunch and afternoon cheese & biscuits was a great way to finish off the day. Highly recommend this trip

We can throughly recommend this small, relaxed all-inclusive reef tour. The crew were amazing, the snorkel safari the best we’ve ever been on in clear, calm waters seeing beautiful corals, fish and turtles close up. Semi sub tour of the island, guided walk, use of paddle boards and kayaks and amazing food all included. A really great day out. Thanks to all the crew. You worked so hard all day and were fun, helpful, friendly and very informative. Thank you

What an amazing day out in frankland Island. Would highly recommended this trip – one of the best snorkelling I’ve done and its guided. if your not the best swimmer you can just walk straight into the crystal clear water and still see lots of amazing stuff. The submarine was brilliant, got to see loads. The island walk was very educational and saw some very unique things. Great staff, great food. Overall amazing day out would highly recommend 🙂

Unforgettable Great Barrier Reef experiences

When you envisage the Great Barrier Reef, you no doubt think of diving and snorkelling, but there are so many other unique ways to experience this World Heritage beauty.

By Paul Chai

Whether you're picnicking on a secret tropical island that only emerges during high-tide, walking along the sea bed in a modern-day diving helmet, or spending the night on a pontoon under a sea of stars, there is more to the  Great Barrier Reef  than just diving.

Sleep on the reef

Reefsleep Experience, Great Barrier Reef, QLD © Tourism and Events Queensland

Reefsleep Experience, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Tourism and Events Queensland

Reefsuite, The Whitsundays, QLD © Cruise Whitsundays

For an even more luxurious stay, book a Reefsuite ; a fully submerged underwater room. Oceanic room views don't get any better than this.

Where: tour departs from  Airlie Beach , Daydream Island or  Hamilton Island

One of the best ways to get the reef all to yourself is to take part in the  Reefsleep Experience . Cruise Whitsundays takes small groups of visitors to its Reefworld platform moored on the edge of Hardy Reef for a full day of snorkelling, diving, boat and helicopter rides. Unlike all of the other day-trippers who head home at about 3pm, Reefsleepers get to stay behind with the option to submerge in the reef again during the afternoon. Come evening, it's time for a barbecue, and possibly a night dive, before everybody on board tucks themselves into their designated swags (a low tent with an in-built mattress, designed for the Australian outback) under the star-filled sky.

Travel underwater in a mini-submarine

Great Barrier Reef Submarines, Great Barrier Reef, QLD © Tourism and Events Queensland

Where: tour departs from Cairns

Great Barrier Reef Submarines  lets visitors explore the beauty of the reef in a three-person mini-submarine, just 45 minutes on a fast catamaran from  Cairns . Taking a mini-sub ride is less hassle than suiting up for a snorkel or dive. Two guests just jump in the mini-sub with the guide and then launch straight from the beach. In minutes you are submerged among the coral, ready to spot the reef's Great Eight marine life.

Walk along the sea bed

Seawalker, Great Barrier Reef, QLD © Seawalker

Seawalker, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Seawalker

Where: Green Island

Green Island, a coral cay about half an hour offshore from Cairns, is home to the Seawalker experience, in which visitors can walk along the seafloor wearing a diving helmet. The helmet is shaped like an old-school metal diving helmet, fully enclosing your head in a bubble, and connected to the surface through an air hose. But unlike the old metal helmets, the Seawalker helmets are almost completely clear, offering unrestricted views of the amazing sea life of the reef. This is a great way for non-swimmers to experience the underwater wonders, and for those who wear glasses, because they can be left on inside the helmet.

Ride an underwater scooter

Scuba-Doo, Great Barrier Reef, QLD © Scubadoo

Scuba-Doo, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Scubadoo

Taking the helmet walk one step further is this novel way to explore the reef. The  Scuba-Doo , a small yellow motorised scooter with a large viewing dome, acts as a diving helmet and is supported by a float from the surface. Just climb on the scooter at the pontoon, just off the coast at Cairns, put your head in the dome and off you go. The scooters are easily manoeuvred and a guide dives alongside you for the whole journey.

Have a private island picnic

Vlasoff Cay, Great Barrier Reef, QLD © Amber Toms, Tourism and Events Queensland

Vlasoff Cay, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Amber Toms, Tourism and Events Queensland

Where: helicopters departs from Cairns

Vlasoff Cay is a small streak of sand in an ocean of blue. This tiny sand island appears only at low tide and is the perfect setting for a castaway picnic . You can be dropped off at your own stretch of Great Barrier Reef sand by helicopter or chartered boat and left alone with a picnic hamper and a bottle of champagne. This is the ultimate in reef romanticism, with not even a tree to spoil your 360-degree view of this natural wonder of the world. You can swim, snorkel or just relax on your own private – and temporary – island.

Sail aboard a private yacht

Where: boat departs from Port Douglas

There is n othing quite as indulgent as chartering a private yacht – especially when it comes with its own crew. Low Isles is a spectacular island teeming with bird and marine life, just off the coast of  Port Douglas . You can recruit a group of friends and cruise around onboard a Whitsunday Escape yacht, a luxury self contained, sleep-aboard sailing vessel.. Just jump off the side for some of the best snorkelling on the reef!

Take a scenic flight

Air Whitsunday Seaplanes, Heart Reef, QLD © Air Whitsunday Seaplanes

Air Whitsunday Seaplanes, Heart Reef, Queensland © Air Whitsunday Seaplanes

Where: tour departs from Airlie Beach

Seeing the giant living wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef from the sky gives you an understanding of just how immense it really is. The different shades of ocean blue, the secluded islands , and the patterns of the coral beds all laid out before you as you hover above is something you're bound to never forget. You can cover more of the reef from the air than you can ever hope to discover at sea level. Take flight with  Air Whitsunday  for the bird's-eye view of a lifetime.

Swim with Minke whales

Where: tours departs from Cairns

Witness the unique phenomenon of the dwarf minke whale migration that takes place each year between June and July. These friendly mammals travel north to Queensland's coast each winter to breed, birth and swim in the tropical waters. This incredible wildlife encounter is available to experience with limited tour operators:  Mike Ball Expeditions  and  Deep Sea Divers Den  are among a few permitted tours that offer snorkelling and diving trips. The curious minke whales are known to approach swimmers and linger for extended periods, providing an unforgettable nautical experience.

Witness sea turtles hatching

Turtles, Mon Repos Conservation Park, Mon Repos, Queensland © Tourism Australia

Where: Bundaberg

Sea turtles, including the endangered loggerhead turtles, nestle ashore Mon Repos Beach in Bundaberg (about a four-hour drive, or one-hour flight north of Brisbane ). They lay their eggs between November and January, and then from January to March, the hatchlings begin to leave their nests bound for the ocean. You can witness this spectacle with Mon Repos Turtle Encounters , who operate nighttime tours seven days a week. Their guides are environmental scientists who will teach you about conservation programs being run in the area, as well the lifecycle of the majestic sea turtles.

Skydive over the reef

Skydiving at Cairns, Queensland © Tourism and Events Queensland

Where: Mission Beach

If you're an adrenaline junkie and want to soak up a spectacular birds-eye view of the Great Barrier Reef, the sky is the limit – literally. Skydiving at Mission Beach is a unique opportunity to witness the reef and surrounding beaches, as well as the rainforest as you fly from 4,570m (15,000ft) above. The exhilarating freefall experience is available with Skydive Mission Beach who have expert sky masters ready to guide you on the ultimate adventure. Mission Beach is roughly two hours from Cairns, so you can self-drive or book a shuttle bus through Skydive Mission Beach.

How to Book an Uber Submarine to the Great Barrier Reef

For a limited time—and for about $1,000 a pop—uber users in queensland, australia, will be able to request a submarine ride through the world’s largest coral reef..

How to Book an Uber Submarine to the Great Barrier Reef

Marine life lovers: Your Scuber has arrived.

Courtesy of Tourism and Events Queensland

Ridesharing app Uber has partnered with Queensland, Australia, to offer a temporary submarine service , aka a Scuber, for the Great Barrier Reef.

From May 27 to June 18, 40 riders will be able to request the underwater experience through the Uber app—the experience will cost $2,060 for two riders (or about $1,000 each) and will include a pickup, a helicopter ride to and from the submarine location, a one-hour submarine ride, and a drop-off back at the original pickup address with Uber. All passengers have to be at least 18 years old.

The Scuber will be made available to Uber riders in the city of Gladstone on May 27 through June 3 (excluding May 29 and June 1) and to Uber riders in the Australian municipalities of Cairns, Port Douglas, or Palm Cove on June 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, and 18. Riders in Gladstone will be taken to Heron Island, and those from Cairns, Port Douglas, or Palm Cove will be taken to Agincourt Reef.

Here’s how it will work: The Scuber booking will be made available at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Riders need to enter “Great Barrier Reef” as their destination in the Uber app to request a Scuber ride. At least one request will be accepted each day on a first-come-first-served basis, and riders must be available to travel at 9 a.m. on the day they select their Scuber ride. They will be returned back to their original pickup address by 4:30 p.m. on the day of travel. The actual submarine will be operated by Aquatica Submarines .

No diving or scuba gear required

No diving or scuba gear required

Tourism and Events Queensland and Uber have also launched a contest and will give the experience to one person and a companion from each of the following countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, and Australia. To enter, contestants must go to ScuberQueensland.com and explain in 25 words or less why they should experience the Great Barrier Reef with a Scuber. The idea behind the Scuber ride is to shine a spotlight on the reef and offer visitors the chance to see and experience it without the need for scuba or diving gear, according to Tourism and Events Queensland, which promotes Queensland as a tourism destination.

Uber has committed to donating the equivalent value of every Scuber ride to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef , an organization that works to protect and conserve the reef. The famed reef is a network of 1,000 islands that is home to one third of the world’s coral species and approximately 1,625 species of fish.

Uber Launches Submarine ‘Rideshare’ Along Great Barrier Reef

scUber submarine Great Barrier Reef

scUber allows sight-seers in Australia to hail a two-person submersible and view one of the seven natural wonders of the natural world.

Skip the crowds and hassle of booking a Great Barrier Reef tour and just hail a damn submarine.  For a very limited number of Uber users, that will soon be a possibility.

scUber submarine Great Barrier Reef

On Thursday, the rideshare app, in conjunction with the Queensland tourism office, announced the world’s first submarine that riders can hail from their phone.

Dubbed scUber , the service includes pickup from the user’s location in a car, a helicopter ride to the put-in point, and a one-hour submarine tour. Sound too good to be true? It’s not — mostly. But the service will last only 4 weeks, and only one lucky pair of riders can hail the ride each day.

Oh, and it costs $3,000.

On the plus side, Uber will make a matching donation for each ride to conservation nonprofit Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef .

scUber Submarine Rideshare

“In late 2018, consumer research identified that exploring the Great Barrier Reef in a submarine was the most desired future travel experience sought by visitors,” said Leanne Coddington, Queensland tourism and events CEO. “scUber makes this wish a reality and reaffirms Queensland tourism’s commitment to providing locals and visitors alike with truly remarkable ways to explore nature’s wonderland.”

Of course, scUber is neither the first nor the only submarine tour of the Great Barrier Reef. Tourists can book all manner of reef experiences.

But scUber does mark the first iteration of such a personalized option for rideshare users. For now, however, it seems more like a publicity stunt than a pilot program. The promotion will go live on May 27 and run through June 18. In that time, Uber will offer one scUber ride per day on a first come, first served basis.

scUber submarine Great Barrier Reef

Each day, beginning at 7:30 a.m. during the promotion period, Uber riders in select Queensland cities (Gladstone, Cairns, Port Douglas, and Palm Cove) will have the option to select scUber. One lucky hailer will have the option to purchase the scUber ride.

From there, a car will pick up the riders — each scUber can accommodate two people — and take them to a helicopter pickup. A short helicopter ride later, the riders will arrive at their scUber to enjoy a one-hour Great Barrier Reef tour. And, of course, the trip includes a return to the riders’ point of origin.

In total, Uber says 20 scUber rides will shuttle 40 riders around the reef as part of the promotion. Only people using the Uber app within the select cities will have the scUber option.

Win a scUber Tour

For those who aren’t quite fast enough to snag the daily scUber rides, don’t fret! Uber will also give away six scUber prize packages.

Enter here and tell Uber in a maximum of 25 words why you should see the Great Barrier Reef in a scUber. Six winners will receive roundtrip airfare to Queensland, Australia; 5 nights of luxury accommodation; a scUber tour; a Daintree Rainforest tour; and a $250 Uber Eats credit.

And hey, if you’re not planning to go to Australia or don’t want to shell out $3,000, feel free to make a direct donation to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef here .
