Sizzling Big Loud Records upstart Griffen Palmer is more than meets the eye. Growing up musically, his artist/musician father instilled an early appreciation for lyricism in him that soon turned into a love for the craft of songwriting. Cultivating a strong pen and sturdy performance chops through four-hour, back-corner cover sets in dusty college bars at Ohio's Bowling Green State University, the D1 rugby player's house party introduction to GRAMMY-nominated hitmaker Geoff Warburton (Shawn Mendes, Machine Gun Kelly) was the tip of the scale that moved him to Music City. Winning NBC's Songland in May of 2020, the in-demand wordsmith has only continued stacking cuts with global superstars like Florida Georgia Line (“Second Guessing”), Keith Urban (“Polaroid”), The Band Camino, Chelsea Cutler, MacKenzie Porter, Jade Eagleson and more. Starting the year off hot with a solo version of “Second Guessing,” the SiriusXM The Highway “Highway Find” performed the heart-stopping ballad on ABC's The Bachelor . Just wrapping a nationwide run with labelmate Lily Rose supporting her 2023 headline tour, the 27-year-old's midwestern drive and versatility are on full display, showcased on his debut album Unlearn out now.

INTERVIEW: Griffen Palmer Discusses His Debut Album, Unlearn

griffen palmer tour

Kyla Pearson

  • March 9, 2024

Big Loud’s rising star Griffen Palmer is giving fans a first taste of his music with his debut album,  Unlearn .

For those unfamiliar with Palmer, he’s a songwriter first, with cuts with Jade Eagleson, Keith Urban and MacKenzie Porter. Since signing with Big Loud, he’s released numerous singles, accompanied Lily Rose on her US nationwide tour and performed at the 2023 CMA Fest.

Last April, the singer-songwriter released Unlearn , a record that is best described as encompassing what it means to be young and in your ’20s. Consisting of  10  pop-infused   tracks, the record explores relatable themes & experiences  such as falling in love with the one, personal growth and more—all while maintaining fresh perspectives. As he shares,

“This record brings together  4 years of writing songs. I wanted the record to feel like me, so I chose songs that were key to who I am as a person. I set out to write the best songs and this was the result”  (Palmer, Griffen).

Evidently, Palmer is proud of the record and happy to be finally sharing it with his fans.

griffen palmer tour

Each of the tracks were co-written by Palmer’s longtime collaborator, GRAMMY-nominated creative & songwriter Geoff Warburton (Shawn Mendes, Machine Gun Kelly, 5 Seconds Of Summer)– quite the heavy hitter to be involved in your debut album.

“We’re from the same hometown. I met Geoff at a random house party, his girlfriend (now fiancé) mentioned being there with a songwriter and introduced us–I was working at a restaurant at the time. So we were buddies writing songs before this– we’ve written hundreds of songs and were getting ready for the record. He adds, “It’s great to collaborate with a friend on a project and have it all come together. That’s what makes it fun and all worth it” (Palmer, Griffen).

Further adding to the star-studded team, the whole record was produced by Joey Moi (Jake Owen, ERNEST, HARDY)– Big Loud’s resident multi-platinum-selling, award-winning producer.

The album opens with “ Second Guessing, ” where Palmer is casting away all doubts. He knows he found the one and is focusing on the present moment– letting go of all his overthinking in the process. This is followed by “25 To Life,”  in which he sings of a head-over-heels protagonist who’s willing to commit to spending the rest of his life with the woman he loves. Then comes the title track, “ Unlearn” . It’s an interesting one  because it sheds light on the pre-existing traumas, patterns and behaviours we bring into a relationship, and how we have to ‘unlearn’ the negative ones to make a healthy relationship work.

Up next is  “Put Me Through Hello,”  a song about that ex that doesn’t quite let you move on with every ‘I miss you’ and ‘R u up?’ text they send. “ By The Way” is also about an ex, only this time said ex has seemingly moved on so easily while Palmer sings of still being in love with them. Then there’s  “ Small Town After All, ” which presents the challenges that come with breaking up in a small town. After all, it’s much harder to move on when you share mutuals and the same hangout spots with your ex.

“Came Here To Leave,” opens in a bar, setting the stage for a couple that can’t wait to sneak out of the social function to have some time alone together.  “Late To The Party”  is a fun one, where he tells the story of meeting the person who could be the one and wishing they had met sooner. In “ How Many Beers,” Palmer finds himself heartbroken, wondering how many beers he needs to  drink before he’s over his ex. Palmer closes off the album by contemplating where the night is leading them in “ Bottles On The Table,”  wondering if there’s more to it than just drinks.

THE VERDICT

Out of all 10 tracks, “Unlearn” , “By The Way” and “25 To Life” would be my standout picks. Conceptually and lyrically, each of these songs brings something to the table. That’s not to discredit the rest of the record, which does a good job of introducing Palmer and the brand of country he wants to share with the world.  If you’re going through a breakup & trying to move on, falling in love for the last time or simply in a period of pivoting in new directions in your ’20s, you’ll find comfort in the tracks on this album.

'Songland' Winner Griffen Palmer Details Debut Album 'Unlearn' (Exclusive)

By Stephen Andrew - April 28, 2023 03:45 pm EDT

Songland winner Griffen Palmer has released his debut album, Unlearn , a collection of pop-infused country tunes filled with heart and reflection. Over the past few months, Palmer has put out a handful of singles, which tease a little of what listeners are in store for, but don't give away just how much of a treasure trove Unlearn really is. Recently, PopCulture.com had a chance to speak with Palmer about the album and he provided some insight into a few of the songs, as well as dished on what fans can expect from him over the next year.

PopCulture.com: I wanted to ask you about the title song, "Unlearn," specifically, because I know that that was your most recent single. Can you share a little about the origins of that track and how it evolved into what it is now?

Griffen Palmer: I wrote that song maybe about two years ago with Jeff Warburton and it was really just a personal song about my experiences growing up and my family. My parents separated when I was pretty young. It really has a big effect on your outlook on things when you're trying to just learn who you are as a person, and what relationships look like and what love's like. Once you get old enough to decide what that should look like for yourself, it's a pretty interesting thing to go through. I just wanted to write that song as a song that I would've wanted to hear 15 years ago.

When I was really going through it, especially now being on the other side of things where my family's better than it's ever been and everyone's super happy. Anyway, so it's the most personal song on the record and that's kind of why I wanted to make it the title track, because I feel like if there's any song to get to know me by on this record, it's probably this one.

PC: Was there any kind of hesitation on your part to be this vulnerable?

Griffen Palmer: Yeah, definitely at first it was a bit overwhelming. When I first started sharing this song with my team, everyone was like, "This is incredible. This is going to help so many people." I was like, "I feel super naked." But the more we talked about it, the more I thought it was super important to include it. Yeah, I'm really glad I did in the end.

PC: How did your family respond to that? Yeah, like you said, it's so vulnerable, it's so personal. How did they feel about that song?

Griffen Palmer:  Yeah, when I first played it for my sisters and stuff like that, who were right in the thick of things with me back in the day, they all got super emotional with it. I think it was reactions like that really showed me the power in the song and the importance in sharing that kind of story.

PC: I also really love "25 to Life." Great single, just a beautiful song. What was the story behind that tune?

Griffen Palmer: Again, I wrote that with Jeff Warburton. We were in the middle of the pandemic. It was right during kind of house arrest. We decided to try to stay productive. We were just going to live together during that time. I moved in with him and his fiance, God bless her, to just let two adults have a sleepover for a month.

I just had this idea called "25 to Life," and I just really wanted to touch on the juxtaposition between a sentence, like a prison sentence, the worst kind of sentence, and the idea of spending a really, really long time with the person you love, with kind of the idea that that would be the best type of sentence you could possibly have. It was a bit of a puzzle to put that one together, to try to fit in the kind of prison lingo mixed with the sentiment of a love song. But I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. I think we did a really good job.

PC: I know you've been touring, and have a lot more shows lined up. Do you have any parts of North America that you enjoy playing or that you discovered you enjoy as you began to tour?

Griffen Palmer: Obviously anytime I can play in Ohio is really fun just because a lot of my favorite people are all from Ohio. It's always fun to see them. [Palmer is originally from Ontario, Canada, but went to college in Ohio.]

On this tour I've got to see so many different parts of the country and I've really liked places like Philadelphia, and Boston, and those bigger cities, but also playing some spots in Georgia and Texas this weekend has been pretty incredible. It's been my first time in Texas. Just seeing all these new places is really fun.

PC: Would you say that your life after Songland was a pretty big change for you? Or, did the bigger changes came a little later with the touring, and working on the album, and all that kind of stuff?

Griffen Palmer: I think it changed in some ways just based on, it gave all the people in my life context for what I'm actually doing. Because when they know I'm just a songwriter and writing songs for people, it's hard for people to wrap their head around what that really is. Songland is really cool in that sense because it showed people what I'm doing and what the process is like, and what it really is like to have the life of a songwriter. It changed in that sense for me, but it didn't really explode my life into something super crazy. Maybe that's to come, but right now everything still seems pretty normal.

PC: What's on the horizon for you for the next foreseeable future?

Griffen Palmer: Right now, we're just really looking forward to getting this music out. Then we just got festival shows in the summer that should be getting announced pretty soon. Hopefully getting up another tour in the fall and just playing this music for anyone who wants to listen to it.

Palmer's new album, Unlearn , is now available on most streaming services. Click here to listen, and click here to find his upcoming concerts. Keep it locked to Pop Culture.com for more great country music interviews, news, and exclusives!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the cj cup byron nelson 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

jason-day-usatsi.jpg

There are plenty of challenging courses throughout championship season on the PGA Tour, but this week's stop at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson is not one of them. It features wide fairways that can be torched by some of the sport's big hitters. Nine of the top 10 finishers at this event last year winded up inside the top 50 in driving distance on the PGA Tour at the end of the season. Jason Day finished 23-under par in his victory, while K.H. Lee won back-to-back tournaments in 2021 (-25) and 2022 (-26). Jordan Spieth, who finished second in 2022, is the 12-1 favorite according to the latest 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds.

Spieth has posted a trio of top-10 finishes this season and has made the cut in six of his 10 events. He is followed by Day (18-1), Will Zalatoris (22-1) and Si Woo Kim (22-1) on the PGA odds board, creating some enticing options for your 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson bets. Before making any 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Jason Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.

Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament.

Another surprise: Tom Hoge, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Hoge is ranked inside the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings, making him one of the top golfers in this week's field. He has made the cut in 11 of his first 13 events this season, including seven top-25 finishes.

He missed the cut in last week's team event in New Orleans, but he has three top-20 finishes in his last four individual events. Hoge finished T-6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and eighth at the Genesis Invitational earlier this year. He ranks second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approach to green, making him a valuable longshot this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Zalatoris would fit the mold of winners here, assuming his putter holds up well.

Tom Hoge was playing great at Harbour Town until the 72nd hole and has been on a good run of late.

2. 25 To Life

8. Late To The Party

9. How Many Beers

10. Bottles On The Table

Star of NBC’s Songland and Big Loud’s latest prodigy, Griffen Palmer emerges with his debut album Unlearn , a first in-depth glimpse into the Ontarian’s highly-acclaimed lyricism. Having secured writing cuts for the likes of Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line and Mackenzie Porter, there’s a Music City buzz building around Palmer, and with that success comes great expectation.

Apart from on opener 'Second Guessing', there’s no long list of co-writers on the credits, that’s for sure. A chance meeting with mega-hit songwriter Geoff Warburton at a house party opened a dream door for the budding singer-songwriter, forming the basis for this project on which Warburton co-wrote every track. His touch of pop-leaning know-how and melodic mastery adds a layer of very strong mainstream appeal.

The title track has all the ingredients of a smash hit; a stadium-ready chorus that explodes into life, as Palmer gushes over a fairytale relationship that changed a lost lover’s fortunes. ‘25 To Life’ is another highlight, as Palmer goes all-in for his life partner with some clever lyricism; “ If loving you is a crime / give me 25 to life with you ” It’s these moments of nuance and transparency on a personal level where Palmer shines artistically, something that’s wonderfully endearing when it hits the spot.

In-house producer Joey Moi’s slick expertise provides radio-potential hits aplenty, with the likes of ‘By the Way’ and ‘Small Town After All’ packing in the infectious hooks that all chart-toppers require. ‘How Many Beers’ is also an instant favourite, with its novel take on a breakup providing much more depth than the title suggests. It possesses an absolutely killer, electric guitar-driven melody, too.

But you only get one chance to make a first impression; listeners need to hear artistic boundaries being stretched. At times, a lack of bravery in the subject matter leaves much to be desired. Country Music wasn’t longing for another ‘taking a girl home from the bar’ song in ‘Came Here to Leave,’ and ‘Late To The Party’ feels rather generic and far too safe for a songwriter of Palmers’ calibre.

Unlearn teases immense potential, whilst still leaving much to be discovered. Clearly a complex, sophisticated songwriter, there’s just enough there to reel you in and leave you wanting more. Whilst the choice of material for a short 10-track project could be sharper, when Palmer is on it, he’s really on it.

Palmer certainly has a lot more to unleash and is definitely a talent to keep an eye on.

Griffen Palmer's 2023 album, Unlearn, is released April 28th via Big Loud Records.

For the second time in as many Additional Events, a former winner on the PGA TOUR emerged with the title. Brice Garnett did it at the Puerto Rico Open on the second Sunday of March. Today, it was Billy Horschel at the Corales Puntacana Championship.

It could be argued that the only commonality between both winners was that they had prevailed previously, but in a blind test, no one would mistake Garnett’s career for Horschel’s, and vice versa. And that’s not a knock to either guy, instead, it’s a validation of the possibilities of the Additional Events. Show up, peg it and putt out. The golf ball doesn’t care who you are.

All motivations to compete in Additional Events begin with the opportunity to make a difference in one’s season and potentially a career, but the betting houses care only about the tournament proper.

In what was his season debut, Garnett was +15000 to win pre-tournament at BetMGM in Puerto Rico. He broke through on the PGA TOUR in the inaugural edition of the Corales Puntacana in 2018, so he went six years without another trophy presentation, not to mention a loss of fully exempt status in the interim.

Horschel’s most recent of seven TOUR victories was the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday in early June of 2022, and he’s played out of the winners category ever since his maiden title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2013. Of course, he also was the 2014 FedExCup champion. And with a sturdy 2024 that already included two top 10s among four top 20s, it wasn’t surprising that his pre-tournament odds were just +2000 , third-shortest in the field of 132.

With his eighth victory, Horschel banks 300 FedExCup points and $720,000. The win comes with a two-year exemption (although Horschel is exempt on TOUR through 2025 thanks to his win at the Memorial), entry into the PGA Championship at Valhalla next month and a start next year at Kapalua in The Sentry.

Like Garnett, Wesley Bryan is a former winner on TOUR (2017 RBC Heritage) who also lost status – injury and shoulder surgery played a significant role as well – but he was attempting a wire-to-wire victory at Corales Golf Club. He settled for solo second, two strokes back of Horschel. Had Bryan finished the job, at +30000 , he’d have been the latest longshot to win in 2024.

Kevin Tway ( +15000 ) checked up alone in third another two shots in arrears. He’s another one-time PGA TOUR champion (2018 Fortinet Championship) who lost his card since.

At +1400 each, Alex Noren and Nicolai Højgaard were the tournament favorites at Corales. Noren finished T23, while Højgaard missed the cut by five. The Dane was the only golfer in the field who had played the Masters the previous week.
