Check-in at Maalaea Harbor

Enjoy an open water voyage to Lanai where you will get have incredible views of the islands of Maui County like Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, and Lanai. During winter months, passengers can often spot humpback whales in the water as the relax or play with their calves in the warm Pacific Ocean.

Upon arriving at Manele Harbor, be greeted by your driver, and the guide will be driving an air-conditioned Suburban SUV to ensure your comfort and safety during your exploration of the island of Lanai. Feel free to ask your guide any questions you may have, and then sit back to enjoy the tour!

After departing from the harbor, destinations may include Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, and Hulopo’e Bay. Where you guide takes you on your activity date may change depending on the weather and road conditions, but they will do their best to accommodate any requests while exploring Lanai.

Start the tour driving by Hulopoe Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District and one of the most beautiful aquatic areas on Lanai. From there, you will cruise by the famous Lanai Cat Sanctuary, home to hundreds of furry felines, stop by a Hydroponic Farm, and visit the scenic Kaumalapau Harbor.

Walking at the Garden of the Gods is a captivating journey into a rugged, Martian-like landscape. This surreal terrain, sculpted by nature's forces, showcases vivid red and orange hues contrasted against the blue sky. The walk unveils rock formations & geological wonders that spark the imagination.

This pristine stretch of coastline offers a dramatic seascape with the remains of a World War II-era shipwreck in the background. The golden sands are framed by turquoise waters, creating a stunning contrast. While swimming is discouraged, it is an ideal spot for taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Once your tour has completed, you are free to enjoy Lanai at your leisure. You can be dropped off at the harbor to wait, or visit other areas. Please note that transportation around Lanai is not provided once your tour has ended, but taxi and shuttle services are available for an additional fee.

After a long yet exhilarating day on Lanai, make your way back to Maui and the Maalaea Harbor. Depending on the season, you may even catch a glimpse of the sun as it dips below the horizon, offering beautiful sunset views to ferry passengers.

• Depending on what you would like to do during the four hours of free time on Lanai, guests should bring methods of payment (credit card and cash) for shuttle and transportation services, food at restaurants, and purchases at stores.
• Guests who plan to go the beach during the free time on Lanai should bring a swimsuit, change of clothes, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and snorkeling equipment.

Overall rating

The trip was excellent. Parking at the Maalea harbor dock is a pain. In the future tell your clients to get the ParkWhiz app on their phone You can pay for close up parking on this app. The code reader at the dock is cr ... appy. Our Lanai on site guide, Russ was a wealth of information and had as much fun with us and the other couple as we did with him and the tour. A nice day was had by all.

Can I bring my own drinks and snacks?

Yes, you can bring snacks with you, but please do not eat or leave trash in the vehicles. There will be a stop for lunch (Full Day) in Lanai City as well.

Will the ferry be a problem if I am prone to seasickness?

Consider taking an over the counter motion sickness preventative before your cruise if you are worried about sea sickness. The waters in the afternoon tend to be much rockier than in the morning.

How far in advance should I book this activity?

We recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last-minute bookings are often possible, but availability is limited.

Will we see whales?

Every year Humpback Whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii, and although not guaranteed, they are often seen between the months of December and April.

Is transportation provided on Maui?

Please make your own way to the Lahaina Harbor to catch the Ferry, and once you arrive in Lanai, your guide will pick you up at Manele Harbor upon disembarking the passenger ferry. You can be dropped off back at the Manele Harbor or a location of your choosing.

What kind of vehicle will be used?

The vehicle is a newer model Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that can be either a Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, Land Rover, or Ford Expedition.

How long is the ferry ride each way?

The ferry takes approximately 45 minutes each way, but can be up to an hour depending on ocean conditions.

GLENHOPE STATION

4wd group tour experience, experience this rugged 4wd track through a guided 4wd tour or self guided 4wd experience.

Glenhope Station offers both 4WD Guided Tours as well as an option for those wanting to do a 4WD Self-Guided Experience.

Find yourself fording rivers, manoeuvring steep cliff cuttings & venturing through wide open tussock valleys. This diverse track has it all. You'll be sure to walk away empowered once you've conquered it.

The 46km drive can be done as a day trip or split over two days with an overnight cabin stay.

It is certainly not for the faint-hearted & only experienced drivers should attempt it unless supervised by a one of our guides. ​

4WD TRACK - SELF GUIDED

Whether you're a 4x4 club or an experienced group of high country enthusiasts wanting to explore the outdoors, Glenhope Station will certainly put your 4x4 skills to the test. 

On the day of the booking, drivers or a club representative meet with management for a safety briefing & gate key exchange.

Drivers choose the route they wish to take (anywhere between 1.5-3 hours). Finishing with an optional overnight stay at "The Retreat" eco cabin or "Magdalen House" . 

Track Pass:

A group track pass starts at $300 (minimum 5 vehicles). Additional vehicles are $60 each.

4WD Tour Descriptions / Featured Tour Routes

Tomboy / Imogene Pass:   Tomboy Road climbs to Imogene Pass from downtown Telluride to a summit of 13,114 feet. Our half day trip to Imogene via the Tomboy Ghost Town is our single most popular tour, generally available from late June through September. Tomboy Road is an intermediate 4-WD road, bumpy and airy, but not as tricky as Black Bear Pass or other truly advanced routes. This is a well-suited trip for most customers. Kids, seniors and everyone in between enjoy the thrill of high country adventure and the colorful history of Telluride's most famous gold mine: Tomboy.

In addition to Tomboy, tour highlights include the "Social Tunnel," the summit of Imogene and the Red Mountain Overlook, which offers astounding views of the towering Weminuche Mountains to the east.

Early season variation:  In June, Tomboy Road typically opens to the ghost town a couple weeks before it clears all the way to the summit.  During this period, we’ll make a round trip to Tomboy (about ½ way to the pass), return to Telluride and head up the Bridal Veil Road for an up close and personal view of Colorado’s biggest waterfall, which is always cranking during peak snowmelt in June.

Ophir Pass/Alta Ghost Town:   Ophir Pass (11,789 ft) is well-suited to less experienced offroad travelers and those who seek the beauty of the high country in combination with a less rugged 4-WD experience. The pass road does include some classic "shelf road" sections with stunning views and the necessity of 4-WD maneuvering, but much less “exposed” terrain than Imogene or Black Bear.

We also commonly visit the Alta Ghost Town on this tour, a 4-mile excursion up a nearby Forest Service road. Alta (11,000 ft) is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in Colorado and the site of a classic post card photo opportunity: Wilson Peak as viewed from Alta.

During the gold rush, Alta became the first town in the world to utilize the modern technology of alternating current electricity. You'll learn about this and many other significant facts tracing their history to this eerie, abandoned townsite. As a bonus, our Ophir/Alta tour offers Telluride's best wildflower viewing in July and early August.

Black Bear Pass: One of Colorado's most notorious offroad passes, Black Bear (12,840 ft) is recommended for thrill seekers and experienced 4-WD travelers. We offer Black Bear as a half day morning trip to avoid exposure to rain storms on slow-driving sections above treeline.

The tour begins by crossing Ophir Pass and driving north on Highway 550 to the beginning of one-way Black Bear Pass near the summit of Red Mountain Pass. After climbing the back side of Black Bear, we summit the pass and drop into Black Bear Basin, where wildflowers grow waist-high in late summer. We then negotiate Black Bear's notorious "stair steps," cross under Ingram Falls, and descend the breathtaking "switchbacks" of Telluride's box canyon headwall. The road becomes two-way at the top of Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's highest waterfall (464 feet). We view Bridal Veil from many angles, including an astonishing straight-up view from the mist plume itself. Total tour time is approximately 4 hours.

Sunset Tours: Enjoy a relaxing evening of high country scenic touring on a Telluride Outside sunset tour. Popular destinations include the Alta Ghost Town, Last Dollar Road and Bridal Veil Falls, all spectacular places to enjoy the magnificent evening light that flows into our valley from the west, bouncing off clouds to bathe our peaks in alpenglow.

Telluride Outside’s Touring Vehicles

Our “Jeep” tours are actually conducted in new model trucks customized for your safety, comfort and optimal viewing. Seats are heavily padded, suspension is beefed up and the cab is open so you may converse directly with your guide. Removable canopies provide shelter in all weather conditions without inhibiting the "open air" experience.  Vehicles are inspected daily, cleaned after every tour and maintained to scrupulous standards under regulation from  the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and Telluride Outside’s meticulous operating procedures.

Yes, we guarantee a private tour for all parties of 8 or more guests.  Smaller parties commonly choose to pay the 8-person minimum to ensure a private tour.  However, 4WD tours are an inherently social experience and the majority of our tours are not booked on a private basis.

There are lengthy sections of “shelf road” on both Imogene and Ophir Pass.  Guests with an acute fear of heights are advised to sit on the left side of the vehicle.  If you find yourself asking this question, we assume you are not interested in Black Bear Pass!  Our high country tours push the comfort envelope for some guests, but are generally well suited to parties with a wide range of experience and enthusiasm for such endeavors.

Registered service dogs are welcome, but unfortunately, our operating plan with the National Forest Service excludes all other dogs.  Pup will eagerly await your return.

Yes, but our guests must provide the car seat and handle its installation and use.  Lap belts are provided for each guest in the primary seating area of the vehicle.  There is also one regular bench seat adjacent to the driver in the cab, which has a full shoulder/lap belt.

Our 2 hour Xtreme tour is on the same trail as the 3 hour tour but doesn't include all of the obstacles and intensity that the 3 hour trip includes. 

It is in the Moab back country where you will see beautiful views of Arches National Park in the distance and stand 1,000 ft. above the Colorado River. There are plenty of fun photo opportunities!

Guided 4x4 Jeep Trail Tour

Explore the majestic La Plata Mountains and Canyon near Durango, CO on one of our guided 4×4 tours. This adventure travels through La Plata Canyon and ascends to the Kennebec Pass at over an astonishing 12,000ft, discovering the old 1875 ghost town of La Plata City along the way. This is a great adventure for the entire family. All ages are welcome on this trip, however, car seats are not provided. Twilight 4x4 Jeep Trail Tour

Explore the majestic La Plata Mountains and Canyon near Durango CO at dusk, one of the most scenic and beautiful times of the day. Our Jeep trail tour travels through La Plata Canyon. We climb to nearly 10,000 feet above sea level then stop to take in the views. This is a great adventure for the entire family. All ages are welcome on this trip, however, car seats are not provided. NOTE: This tour does not go up to the top of Kennebec Pass.

Scenic Waterfall 4 x 4 Tour (2 1/2 hours)

If you love waterfalls you will enjoy this tour. Explore the majestic La Plata Mountains and Canyon near Durango, CO at some of the canyon’s most scenic and beautiful waterfalls. This is a mild scenic tour fun for the entire family who does not want to do the full four-hour tour. We will stop at 3 unique waterfalls for plenty of photo opportunities, as we climb higher into the canyon. Our last waterfall stop is on private property accessible only to Durango Rivertrippers. This stop gets you up close to a stunning 25-30ft waterfall with some old mining structures scattered around the base. We reach around 10,000 feet above sea level and stop to take in the views. This is a great adventure for the entire family. All ages are welcome on this trip however car seats are not provided. NOTE: This tour does not go up to the top of Kennebec Pass and is a mild tour.

You will board into our “Open-Air” vehicle (however we reserve the right to take a Jeep Wrangler if needed). We will drive on the highway for approximately 20-25 minutes to the mouth of the canyon and from there we will start our tour into the canyon. It can get windy so if you get cold easily please bring a jacket or ask for one, we carry extra jackets and blankets but you may need to ask.

Our 2024 season opens with private tours starting on May 24th and group tours beginning on June 3rd.

Setting up our tour online was exceptionally easy. We met our tour guide/Jeep driver for a tour of Corkscrew pass. Larry was knowledgeable, very friendly and a safe driver. The scenery was amazing, equipment in great shape, and they even had blankets for us when it began to snow at 12,000 feet!

What an adventure to remember! Breath-taking views from the bottom of the mountain to the top of the mountain and back down to the bottom of the mountain! Exhilarating and adventuresome! Joe, our guide/driver, is an expert in navigating the mountain as well as educating us on our sites!

We had a great time on our guided jeep adventure with our guide Larry. He was extremely experienced and very safe as a driver. He had a great understanding of the area, including the mining history and scenery. This was a spectacular experience!

This was our second trip with Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours. Each time is a great experience. We did the Cork Screw route and the scenery was amazing. The fall colors did not disappoint! Once again we all can't say enough about our trip and our tour guide will continue to book and recommend them!
