Italy from North to South

The first part of the tour was absolutely fantastic and our tour guide Carlos was both knowledgeable and well prepared and organised, on our return to Rome things wend down hill, complete chaos, no organisation, dreadful guides, no organisation, this really puts a damper on the trip, the end of the trip was just cobbled together, this was a very disappointing end to our holiday

Very nice and knowledgeable your guides. Bus driver was spectacular as well. Great timing on the locations. Is a bit rushed but that’s the nature of guided tours. But allows you to see many places in one week

Best of Italy (Summer, 13 Days) Tour

Best of Italy (Summer, 13 Days)

First of all Trafalgar should have known that on Wednesdays the Pope is in audience so disappointed the people on our tour that we did not get to see the Basilica. The tour guide told us that they only learned that that morning which is not true. It has always been Wednesdays for years now. Very disappointing. So the people who go on the tour starting on another day get to see the Basilica and we are paying the same money. One of the main reason people go to Rome. VERY DISAPPOINTING. When people complained the guide told us that we could go and line up in the afternoon and hope to get in after a couple hours when he knew that meant we would miss the afternoon tour. The day could have been arranged differently so that the Rome tour ended at the Basilica and not started there. Secondly the Lake Como optional cruise was very disappointing as we did not get to see all the famous villas e.g. George Clooney, Richard Branson etc. as our tour guide pointed to an area and told us that it was around the corner in the distance. It would have taken 5 minutes to take us there. The optional cruise around Capri Island was another disappointment as you saw nothing more than what you see coming in on the Ferry. These optional tours are extremely expensive for what you get from them. The meals were very repetitive, pasta, pasta, and more pasta. Some of the hotels were very second rate. I had to ask to change rooms twice. A/C not working at night in the summer, showers with doors that did not fit and bathroom flooded after taking a shower. Enjoyed the itinerary although very rushed and having to get up at 6.00 am everyday but very disappointed in the three expensive optional tours above that we did not get what we paid for. Great bus driver and tour guide. Would I recommend this trip, maybe with a higher rated tour company.

Splendor of Sicily 8 Days Tour - from Catania Tour

Splendor of Sicily 8 Days Tour - from Catania

Very much enjoyed the tour of Sicily with our guide Vittoria who was very knowledgeable, kind and funny! We saw a lot of amazing and beautiful places in Sicily, some with local guides, ate a lot of delicious food and were entertained. Vittoria kindly organised gluten free meals for me, as I had an intolerance flare up before the tour. Just to note you need to take your own suitcase to and from the bus, so be aware of this. All the hotels were great quality in good locations. Some meals were a bit late in the evening due to long distances travelled that day, but it wasn’t a huge issue. Highlights for me were Cefalù, Ragusa, Ortigia, Noto and Taormina. Would highly recommend this tour if you want to see the most beautiful places in Sicily.

Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights) Tour

Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights)

Tiring. But then I AM 80 years old. We saw a lot and maybe more than was needed for survey I would have liked to have a little more down time at hotel much like our last trip to Venice with Gate 1. Would suggest touring till three where possible then or a break and something less Strenuous in evening if needed. Overall a great experience with a knowledgeable, pleasant Guide with good company. A Taste of Italy: 11 Days Tour

A Taste of Italy: 11 Days

Our tour guides were very knowledgeable. Hotels were adequate, nothing special as were the meals from the hotel. At times, we seemed to be uncertain about what to expect mainly upon arriving in Rome at the Hotel St Martin. There wasn’t any published info or a contact there to refer to. Also didn’t like having to transfer with our luggage from a small bus to the tour bus in Pompeii. The bus wasn’t vacant when we arrived and we had to wait with our luggage for others to come back from their tour. I would have liked more to be included. The tour states Amalfi Coast. When we got to sorrento we were advised that a tour of amalfi coast would be an extra 80 euros pp.

One of the best vacations I have ever experienced!! People at 2 Torri where the best! Treated you like family! Food was great! Never a dull moment moment! Recommend for anyone traveling alone! Strongly recommended if you want to explore Italy!!

A Taste of Italy: 8 Days Tour

A Taste of Italy: 8 Days

If you want to see a lot of Italy in a short amount of time this is the tour for you! Our guides and driver were fantastic. They took all the guess work out of the equation with their guidance on Italian culture and recommendations of good restaurants and safe areas to visit during free time. Be prepared for a lot of walking as much of Italy is best accessed via walking tours. There is beauty around every corner. If walking is difficult for you, be warned that the handicapped accessibility is not near the standard we find in the USA. All of our hotels were great—clean and comfortable. The bus was well appointed and had free WiFi.

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days) Tour

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days)

The first hotel in Rome Romanico Palace Hotel was a dump, dirty and dingy. When arriving in Rome after a long plane ride, I would have expected a nicer hotel for the money we paid. Also, we paid a premium for a small group (20 people) but ended up with the larger group (60 people) on several occasions such as breakfast in two hotels that was chaos BTW and some tours. When we pay extra to be in a smaller group, I expect that this would be honoured by Insight. We were disappointed and didn’t get what we paid for.

“Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a world class museum with an incredible renaissance art collection. Enjoy a guided tour with a Local Specialist to make the experience more memorable, especially when in front of Botticelli’s stunning ‘Birth of Venus’ painting”

Pino, Travel Director

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

7-10 Day Coach Tours of Italy

Your coach tour of italy.

You will begin and then depart in either Rome or Milan, or Venice. Italy itself will unwrap your senses in a way you will not expect. You will be entranced by the magic of Venice, with the winding canals and majestic architecture that will make you want to return again and again. In your guided Tour you will visit the Doge's Palace and stroll through St. Mark's Square, perhaps enjoy a coffee at Cafe Florian as Casanova once frequented. The Market at the Rialto Bridge will be a feast for your eyes and nose as the freshest ingredients of the day are on display.

Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?

The beautiful city of Verona will enthral you with its ambiance of romance as it is the setting for Romeo and Juliet, as Juliet's balcony is located here. Look out for Juliet's statue and she may give you luck. As you wander through the streets, you will see the Roman Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, and the Ponte Pietra. Your escorted Tour may take you to Pisa, the city known for its iconic Leaning Tower. Next to the Tower is the Baptistery, which you can tour and be astounded by the acoustics which are demonstrated daily by amateur singers. There is simply a charm of its own on the back streets of Pisa.

The bustling yet peaceful city of Florence will delight you with the picturesque Piazzas, the Arno, and the terracotta tiled Duomo. On your guided vacation, take in the sights of the Ponte Vecchio, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and the Accademia Gallery to behold the statue of David. Rome is the most famous Italian city of all and the capital of Italy. All roads truly do lead there as do most of the tours. See the Colosseum, Forum, Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain on your guided sightseeing tour. With most tours you will be supplied with headphones so that you can hear the guide clearly.

Three Coins in a Fountain

Most tours spend a couple of nights in Rome so you will have the opportunity to see all the historical sights floodlit which brings an extra magic to your visit. Heading south from Rome you may take the opportunity to see Pompeii. Sitting in the shadow of Mt Vesuvius you’ll learn about the 79 AD eruption which destroyed the Roman cities of both Pompeii and Herculaneum. The magnificent Amalfi Coast will take your breath away as you meander along the coast line viewing the towering cliffs as houses seem to grow out of the mountains. Perhaps you will visit Positano, a quaint cliffside village. Finally let us not forget two more major regions that you can visit in less than 10 days. The Italian Lakes of Maggiore, Lugano, Como and Garda all have their own characters and are simply stunning. Fans of Island life may wish to visit Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean. A prominent landmark is Mt Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. 7-10 days in Italy will leave a lasting impression and you will be yearning for another visit. Perhaps a longer one, which you can find in our other section of  Italy tours 11-30 days which also include visits to other European countries.

What our customers say

We were very impressed.

"My wife and I have just returned from the Classic Sicily tour on our first holiday with Travelsphere. The result was that we were very impressed with the company. Roberto, our Tour Manager, was very efficient, attentive and helpful. Guiseppe, our driver, was friendly and efficient, the coach was always clean and he was always there waiting for us at the appointed time. The local guides varied, but it was worth going to Agrigento to listen to Claudio, who imparted his knowledge to us with the air and professionalism of a true thespian. Had to be seen to be believed!" Alan H

Would recommend this tour

"Just returned from treasures of Tuscany tour. Despite the unseasonal cold weather it did not spoil the trip or the beauty of the region Michaela our tour guide deserves special mention for her organisational skills, obvious love and knowledge of Tuscany and her sense of humour, always checking we all knew exactly where to meet and the ‘loo stops’! The hotel trips and free time where pitched in my my opinion just right - Would recommend this tour" - Dorothy Corkery

Most wonderful experience

"We had the most wonderful experience with Travelsphere to the Amalfi Coast. Hotel base was perfect. So friendly. We had day trips from there by coach or coach and boat. Wonderful trips. Faultless, everything we expected and more" - Susan Payne

Italy touring holidays - Frequently Asked Questions

Every region of Italy offers a unique experience, from the shimmering lakes in the north and the rolling Tuscan countryside, to the traditional towns in Puglia and its sun-kissed islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. If you love history then you should consider a tour to Pompeii , if the arts are more up your street then make sure you visit Florence . Of course you can enjoy a taste of it all on a holiday that takes you on a grand tour of Italy , from the top to the toe.

  • Exploring Venice - whether by foot, or treating yourself to a gondola ride
  • Italy's Lakes - from the iconic Lake Como to the secret lakes of Iseo, Ledro, Caldero and more
  • The historic cities and rolling countryside of Tuscany
  • The lesser-visited Puglia , the "Heel of Italy" is spectacular to discover
  • Sampling a glass or two of Limoncello in Sorrento

Spring, early summer and autumn are the best times for touring Italy as it is generally warm everywhere. However, the temperatures in the evenings can be cooler and it is therefore advisable to take something warm to wear; remember it is always easier to remove warm clothes if you need to than to add those you don't have! Comfortable shoes are a must as there can be a lot of walking involved on some excursions.

Weather from October to March is wintry and you should expect conditions similar to the UK, especially in the north.

As Italy is such a large country with such varying temperatures it is always best to check weather forecasts prior to travel.

Eating out in Italy is a joy. It is a country rich in culinary and gastronomic products and some of its dishes are amongst the best-known in the world. There is a huge choice available, from the smartest, sophisticated restaurants to the simplest of cafes and bars whether you want a sandwich, snack or a full meal. Just about all bars, cafes and restaurants in Italy are licensed so you can always have a beer or wine even with a simple sandwich.

Dinner is usually served in the late evening in Italy, especially in the hot months.

In many Italian households a 3-course meal at both lunchtime and dinner is still par for the course. Both meals begin with a primo piatto or first course which is a risotto (rice), soup (zuppa or minestrina) or a pasta dish. (Pasta is only a first course dish in Italy).

There is an infinite variety of such primi - pasta comes in many shapes and forms, depending often on the region in which you find yourself. The accompanying sauce, whether it be based on fish, meat, cheese or vegetables, should be just enough to coat the pasta. The origins of the pasta course date from poorer times when the pasta was used to help a small amount of meat or whatever ingredients were available go a long way and this tradition remains an important part of the character of pasta dishes.

Next is the main course or secondo piatto which is a meat or fish dish often simply grilled and accompanied by a side dish of 1 or 2 'contorni', vegetables cooked in a variety of ways or served plain for you to add olive oil, the usual accompaniment or dressing for plain vegetables which brings out their flavour.

The meal finishes with either a dessert, perhaps ice-cream for which Italy is so famous, or often fresh fruit of the season.

For special meals a further 4th course is added at the beginning, before the pasta, which is called an 'antipasto' which might be a selection of the local salami and meats, or perhaps in Tuscany the famous Crostini; toasted Tuscan bread with various toppings like tomatoes, pate etc, or Bruschetta; toasted bread rubbed with raw garlic and sprinkled with salt and drizzled with the local extra vergine olive oil.

Specialities:

  • Pesto: sauce of basil, pine nuts and pecorino cheese
  • Parmigiano (parmesan cheese)
  • Abruzzo: Trebbiano D'Abruzzo, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
  • Apulia: Primitivo di Manduria, Salice Salentino
  • Calabria : Greco di Bianco, Cirò
  • Campania : Greco di Tufo & Lacryma Christi
  • Lazio and around Rome: Frascati, Est Est Est
  • Liguria: Rossese di Dolceaqua
  • Sardinia: Vermentino & Cannonau
  • Sicily: Marsala and Moscato
  • Tuscany: Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile dI Montepulciano
  • Umbria: Orvieto
  • Veneto: excellent prosecco's or sparkling dry white wine like champagne from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, as well as the familiar Soave, Valpolicella, Bardolino.
  • After a meal why not try the Italian espresso coffee - small, strong and aromatic!

Breakfast is a meal of little consequence to the Italians who usually take their only cappuccino of the day at breakfast along with perhaps a pastry. Hotels, however, have mostly adapted to the northern European habit and provide bread, butter, jams, honey, fruit juices etc.

The famous Italian pizza is an invention of the Neapolitans and one of the culinary prides of the Campania region where it is served in a great variety of recipes. It was originally made of bread dough, spread with herbs and tomatoes, a simply cheap and tasty form of bread sold in slices. The most common version (The Pizza Margherita) with tomatoes, herbs and mozzarella cheese was invented at Brandi's ristorante in Naples to celebrate the royal visit of the Princess Margherita to the city in the time of the Bourbons.

Throughout the year, the local time in Italy is 1 hour ahead of the UK.

The currency in Italy is the Euro (€), which is widely available in the UK.
