CATCHING WALLEYE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

We do the work, so you can catch fish.

If you love to catch walleye, you’re in the right place. Charter fishing for walleye on Lake of the Woods has many advantages. The biggest one is that you don’t need a boat or gear. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, just show up, hop on a boat, and catch fish. Charters are also perfect for a group or family trip. And our boats are big and comfortable. We’ll even clean the fish and have it cooked for you back at the lodge if you like!

Our guides are Professional Coast Guard Licensed Captains with the experience and knowledge to put you on fish. We offer charter trips on our fleet of 27′ Sportcraft boats, allowing up to 6 people per boat. Our standard trip is 9 hours long from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All charter fishing adventures include rods and reels, tackle, bait and fish cleaning and packaging. Guests on our meal plan can enjoy a bag lunch with a large deli sandwich and snacks. We also offer shorelunch at certain times of the season.

If you don’t own a boat, or have never caught a walleye, this is the perfect adventure for you. Come up and fish with us this season!

WALLEYE CHARTER TRIPS

May – october.

Our Walleye charter trips are available from the May Walleye opener through the end of October. You can expect to travel anywhere from 1 mile to 30 miles on a charter. We’ll go where we need to go to put you on fish! Where you fish will also depend on the time of year and the wind direction/weather. Being located on the end of the Rainy River allows us to take guests fishing on the river even when the weather/wind makes the lake nearly unfishable. Our guides are always on the water, ensuring they can put you on a big school of Lake of the Woods Walleye.

GUIDED STURGEON TRIPS

When most all other fishing is closed, the Sturgeon are on the move in the Rainy River. If you have never caught a sturgeon, then put this on your list this year! Nothing compares to catching a giant sturgeon that bends the rod in half and puts up an incredible fight. The spring keep season is from April 24th through May 7th, but catch and release is allowed before and after the season.

There are over 100,000 sturgeon over 40 inches roaming our waters, according to Minnesota DNR. So your chances of tying into one of these giants is pretty good. Our guides have all the gear and know where the fish are.

* Guest will need to purchase a Minnesota fishing license prior to fishing, and a Sturgeon tag is just $5.

Where and When to Catch Walleye on Leech Lake

The right timing greatly increases your odds of a  successful walleye fishing trip  on Leech Lake. The  early summer season  is prime time for this endeavor, as walleyes actively feed and move along the  shoreline structures  during this period.

Anglers have a keen eye for key factors such as  water temperature ,  wind direction , and  bait availability  which are known to impact fish activity significantly. Walleyes typically follow a feeding path out of the bays and along shoreline structures in pursuit of  spawning spottail shiners and perch .

Unsurprisingly, certain spots on Leech Lake stand out as particularly  productive fishing grounds . Duck, Grassy, Ottertail, Partridge, Pine, Stoney, Sugar Flat areas all prove fruitful while Second Point and Mounds also offer exceptional opportunities.

It’s worth noting that Leech Lake offers not only high numbers but also trophy-class walleye throughout the open-water season. Regular  fishing reports  provide timely updates on conditions to better planner trips according to prime hot spot conditions around these famed locations.

Tips and Techniques for Successful Walleye Fishing on Leech Lake

Catching walleye is a thrilling experience, and with the right strategies at play, you can make it even more successful on Leech Lake . Here are some key tips and techniques to maximize your catch:

  • Cast your line during early ice – out and late ice conditions for higher chance at catching walleyes due to their increased feeding activity during these periods.
  • Use  live bait like minnows or artificial lures  that mimic small perches, a favorite meal of walleyes in Leech Lake.
  • Seek out the  shallows and weed lines  where walleyes love to spend their time during peak feeding hours of dawn and dusk.
  • Keep an eye on water temperature as walleyes spawn when it reaches low to mid-40s – an excellent opportunity for anglers.
  • Employ  trolling techniques across flats, near shorelines or deeper parts of the lake  which serve as classic spawning and migratory routes for walleye.
  • Do not underestimate the usefulness of jigs in attracting walleyes especially when paired with spinners or other attractants.
  • For best results, consult  fishing guides familiar with Leech Lake’s hot spots for professional insights into optimal fishing locations.
  • Be mindful of current regulations concerning the fishing limit for walleye on Leech Lake to maintain sustainable operations.
  • Take advantage of  Brian Brosdahl’s early summer tips  if you’re planning a trip around that time as he’s quite knowledgeable about Leech Lake’s terrain and resident fish behavior.

Lake Erie walleye fishing has strong start near Oak Harbor

PORT CLINTON - Walleye fishing has been strong in the western basin of Lake Erie, between Toledo and Port Clinton. According to norrik.com , fishing in the tributaries is flowing nicely, and walleye fishing is strong, but location is key.

Walleye are appearing in 15 to 20 feet of water, and trophy fish and record walleye catches are being reported.

“Our group comes this time every year, to jig for walleye. We’ve been staying at a condo at Green Cove for the last several years," said Johnathan Hartwig of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin on Tuesday while cleaning a catch of walleye at Shatto's Fish Cleaning along Lake Erie, near Oak Harbor. "Yes, the cost of living is going up, so is the cost of fishing. We limited out, six walleye each, and were back before 11 a.m. It was a good morning. Fishing has been great."

The Pettit and Struck families, of Mankato, Minnesota, brought in their boat and strung up a catch of walleye after a morning of fishing on Lake Erie. They got their limit of six walleye each in around three hours Tuesday.

New legislation sends millions in lottery proceeds for minnesota outdoors projects.

Minnesota will pour millions of dollars into recreational trails, environmental education, water protections, and a smorgasbord of wildlife conservation efforts specified in the latest grant package funded by state lottery proceeds.

In all, this year's Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund bill will distribute $77.6 million to 101 different projects, more projects than ever before. The bill, shaped in 2023 by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR), sailed smoothly through the Legislature and was signed into law Monday by Gov. Tim Walz.

All new in the list of projects is the creation of a 110-mile Driftless Area Hiking Trail in southeastern Minnesota. Volunteers would shepherd the proposed backpacking trail, which has been likened to the Superior Hiking Trail along the North Shore. The initial appropriation of $426,000 will be aimed at route planning, obtaining land permissions, and other preliminary work.

Becca Nash, LCCMR executive director, said she's thrilled by the bill's early passage.

"None of us has any memory of the bill passing this early in the session,'' she said.

The speedy approval is an extra gift for the grantees, Nash said, because it allows them to move ahead sooner than usual. Project work plans must be approved by the LCCMR before the grant money can start to flow in July.

One of the largest appropriations authorized in the bill is $5 million to expand and rehabilitate existing state trails, including high-priority bridge repairs or replacements. Trail building also will be incorporated into other projects, such as the $2.9 million upgrade to Spring Lake Park Reserve in Dakota County.

Game and nongame wildlife projects are sprinkled throughout the bill. The conservation efforts pertain to walleyes, deer, elk, bison, wolves, trumpeter swans, butterflies, moths, small weasels, loons and other critters.

Swans and loons, for instance, could benefit from the $254,000 earmarked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to educate the public about the dangers of using lead fishing tackle and promoting lead-free alternatives. Ingesting lead fragments from lake bottoms is poisonous to swans .

To better understand swans in the state, the University of Minnesota will receive $180,000 to model historical population abundance of the species and to estimate future population dynamics.

The bill includes a $1.77 million grant for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to reintroduce bison to Camden State Park in Lynd, Minn. DNR says it's part of a statewide effort to preserve the "American Plains bison genome.''

To help conserve walleyes, the Science Museum of Minnesota will use $1.12 million to reconstruct historical lake conditions in Minnesota walleye fisheries "to identify factors linked to past success to guide effective management in the uncertain future.''

Regarding wolves, the grant package will send more money to the University of Minnesota's Voyageurs Wolf Project "to continue to study summertime wolf predation on deer, moose and other species.'' The Phase III grant of $996,000 also is designed for the U to "share natural history of this species with the public.''

At least 14 of the LCCMR-chosen projects promise to deliver environmental education, mostly to various segments of youth. One of the grants, for $500,000, goes to Friends of the Boundary Waters to teach a course called "The Boundary Waters is Our Backyard'' to school students in Ely and Cook County.

Together, the educational grants exceed $6.5 million.
