What is a safari hat?

What became the first safari hats were introduced in Asia and the Indian subcontinent through the 1800s as a pith helmet , also known as a safari helmet, sun helmet, topee, sola topee or topi.

These lightweight hats were made out of pith (a soft tissue found inside tree trunks) of the Indian sola tree and covered with a white cloth. They were first used by the European military, though they quickly realized that white hats made them an easy target, so started dyeing the white cloth with tea, to give them a distinctive khaki colour.

In the early 1900s, many Europeans in Asia started to were these pith helmets – and variations on them – as sun hats to protect their heads from the tropical sun. (They were even worn indoors by some who believed sunlight could penetrate their roof!) Understanding of the sun’s powers has evolved since then, as has fashion, and safari hats have developed to be an essential piece of kit when spending time outdoors in sunny terrain, whether on a trip taking in the desert, jungle, savanna, or, of course, safari.

And these days safari hats are being worn not just for protection from the sun, but as a fashion statement too, acceptable as an accessory of choice when going outdoors in any situation given.

What makes a great safari hat?

Whilst there’s a time and a place for the traditional pith helmet (fancy dress party, perhaps?), there is much choice for great safari hats around today – the question is, ‘what should I look for in a safari hat?’ We believe there are several things that you need to consider when buying a good safari hat:

The primary reason for wearing a hat on a daily basis – not just on safari – is to provide protection from the sun while you’re out and about. So just how much sun-protection will the hat provide? You might want to consider buying a safari hat with a wide brim so it can cover both your face and your neck and protect you from sunburn.

A waterproof safari hat is a good idea for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that if it rains whilst you’re on safari and you don’t have shelter your hat can protect you from the rain. The other reason is that non-waterproof safari hats tend to be made out of cotton, which can start to smell a bit after a long day of usage. Buying a waterproof safari hat will make sure you’re protected from sun damage as well as from developing a bad odor.

They say that style and comfort must meet halfway, but if you must choose one over the other you should go for comfort. Why? Simply because you look the best when you feel most comfortable! And when on safari you can sometimes find yourself wearing a hat for the best part of a whole day, so it makes sense to ensure that any safari hat you buy is as comfortable as possible.

Most safari hats are made out of leather, rubber, cotton or man-made fabric. Which one you go for will depend on your personal preference, but make sure you choose a well-made safari hat that will last.  My personal choice is leather because in most cases leather hats will last a lifetime (and grow character) with proper care.

Style is subjective, but it all comes down to how you picture yourself wearing something. Make sure that when you buy a safari hat you really see yourself wearing it and looking at your best.

The Original Pith Helmet is the original design by the French. A hundred years ago, the French discovered the advantages of the pith material used for these hats. Originally made from pith bark. Over the years, construction and materials were improved which make it both a good sun and rain shield. The Original Pith helmets have air vents on both sides and at the top of the helmet. This allows air to circulate to keep you cool. Widely used by missionaries, archaeologists, adventurers, and those who live in the tropics.

The Original Pith Helmet features:

• Handmade from pith or cork and covered in twill

• Adjustable by way of a Velcro-like ending to the interior cotton sweatband

• Medium – Adjustable – Fits up to size 7 1/8 comfortably
• Large – Adjustable – Fits up to size 7 5/8 comfortably

The Pith Helmet is a hard-shell, high-crowned hat with a wide, sloping brim. Originally made of ‘pith’ (soft heartwood) of the Sola plant. Also known as ‘Sola Topees’ or Sola hats. Originally made with a white cotton covering. Later stained an earthy sand color – khaki. This was a form of camouflage in the sandy regions of Africa, India and the Middle East. Soon it became standard on most pith helmets. Currently, there are typically two colors: white and khaki. Ceremonial roles used white, while more practical roles used khaki. Pith helmets came about around the mid-1800s. Helmet design was taken from the German Pickelhaube helmet. Designed for use in hot, dry and humid climates. It has a number of features which make it ideal for these kinds of conditions. Through the centuries, changes to the construction and the materials used has molded they current style.

Hundreds of drugs are in short supply around the U.S., pharmacists warn

A growing number of drugs are in short supply around the U.S., according to pharmacists. 

In the first three months of the year, there were 323 active medication shortages, surpassing the previous high of 320 shortages in 2014, according to a survey by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Utah Drug Information Service. It also amounts to the most shortages since the trade group started keeping track in 2001.

"All drug classes are vulnerable to shortages. Some of the most worrying shortages involve generic sterile injectable medications, including cancer chemotherapy drugs and emergency medications stored in hospital crash carts and procedural areas," ASHP said in a  statement . 

"Most of the drugs in short supply are generic, older products, and about half are injectable drugs that are hard to make," Erin Fox, associate chief pharmacy officer, University of Utah Health, told CBS MoneyWatch. "Because the FDA says all generics are equal, the only way to compete is on price," creating a race to the bottom that results in companies either halting production of the drugs or taking cost-saving shortcuts in quality, Fox said .

"The Biden-Harris Administration remains focused on strengthening the resilience of critical supply chains, including for medical products like pharmaceuticals," the White House told CBS MoneyWatch on Friday. The effort to "ensure Americans can access the medicine they need when they need it," with  steps including investing $35 million in domestic production of materials needed to produce sterile injectable medicines.

Drug shortages have plagued the nation's health care system for several decades, largely due to market failures and "misaligned incentives," the Department of Health and Human Services stated in a paper published earlier this month. 

Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is among the medications that are hardest to track down . The Drug Enforcement Administration said last fall that more than a dozen manufacturers planned to hike production of the drug, which has been in  short supply since October 2022 , but the problem persists, the pharmacist group found. 

"Ongoing national shortages of therapies for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) also remains an issue for clinicians and patients," it said. 

Federal agencies have been tackling the shortages by offering pharmaceutical companies their version of carrots and sticks. The DEA, for example, recently announced quota increases of roughly 25% for methylphenidate, another type of ADHD medication, to help manufacturers to increase supply. 

After noting that manufacturers had for years not been using their full quota allotments for amphetamine salts — which include Adderall — the FDA and DEA in August notified manufacturers that they need to produce to quota or return the ingredient so it could be used by another company.  

Contributing to the  Adderall shortage include a spike in prescriptions during the pandemic, while a key manufacturer experienced production delays and other companies fell short on production targets. 

The FDA recently approved several generic forms of a third type of ADHD medication, Vyvanse, or lisdexamfetamine, which could have a meaningful impact on supply, the White House said.

Most drug manufacturers did not disclose the factors behind the shortages, the pharmacy group noted in its quarterly findings . But experts have pointed to demand outstripping supplies, manufacturing constraints and disruptions in supply lines for raw materials. 

As things currently stand, medicine labels are only required to name the company selling the product, not the product's manufacturer — a lack of transparency Fox said the  White House has joined the ASHP in advocating against. 

Because manufacturers make so little on low-cost generic drugs, when there is a shortage, it's only a problem for patients. The "companies are not facing any sort of hardship," Fox added.

Meanwhile, insurance companies, as a matter of course, oftentimes only cover generic medications, putting a financial burden on patients unable to find a pharmacy that can fill the less-expensive version of a drug. "One recommendation is to call your insurance company, and ask for coverage for brand names," Fox advised.

Mandatory Helmet Laws: A Controversial Topic

While there is much agreement as to the appropriateness of mandatory helmet laws for children, mandatory helmet laws for adults are one of the most controversial topics in the world of cycling.  Proponents argue that helmets help prevent and/or lessen the effects of head injuries and that therefore helmet use is a valid legal requirement for cyclists of all ages.  However, opponents argue that mandatory helmet laws make cycling seem more dangerous than it actually is, thus reducing the number of cyclists on the roads, which then causes the remaining cyclists to be less safe as a result of a reverse strength-in-numbers effect.

Opponents also argue that because bicycling is a healthy activity, the benefits of which far outweigh its risks, promoting cycling saves lives by reducing risk of death from diseases caused by a sedentary lifestyle.
