Lady Gaga Revives “Mother Monster” Style for Her Chromatica Ball Tour

By Christian Allaire

Image may contain Human Person Dance Pose Leisure Activities Crowd Stage Lady Gaga Musical Instrument and Musician

Lady Gaga kicked off her much-anticipated Chromatica Ball world tour last night in Dusseldorf, Germany, and she certainly didn’t disappoint in terms of the fashion. (But does she ever?) On her stark stage inspired by brutalist architecture, the pop star emerged from fog and opened with her smash hit “Bad Romance” while wearing an equally-austere look: The shapely, extraterrestrial-like number —complete with spiked arms and shoulders—is an archival look from Gareth Pugh’s spring 2007 collection , finished off with her death-defying Pleaser platforms of course. Later in the show, she then changes into a new custom Pugh creation, this one complete with a conical harness .

Gaga’s Chromatica Ball tour fashion is the brainchild of her three go-to stylists: Nicola Formichetti, Tom Eerebout, and Sandra Amador. While the Chromatica album’s debut single, “Stupid Love,” saw Gaga embrace more of a futuristic pink vibe , the new tour sees Gaga reviving her signature “Mother Monster” style, which favors a darker, edgier aesthetic. The “Mother Monster” look is ominously sci-fi (but high-fashion), as evidenced by the outfits in her Monster Ball tour—where she wore exoskeletal Olima dresses —and Born This Way Ball tour—where she wore Alien -esque Armani . It's the look that Gaga is best known for. Though she's experimented with country western style for her Joanne album era, and Old Hollywood style for her A Star Is Born press tour, the Chromatica Ball is a glorious return to freaky-deaky dressing. The theatrical looks are filled with lots of latex and leather, avant-garde silhouettes, and even fake blood ; During a performance of “Replay,” for instance, Gaga wears a nude latex bodysuit by Vex Latex that has the effect of being splattered in faux red goo—punctuated by taped X’s over the bust, and a gigantic spiked necklace that’s dangerous to the touch.

Gaga’s stage style is, of course, always connected back to the music. The singer has said the Chromatica Ball tour is a journey around trauma and healing, so the clothes play an integral role in telling that story. While her songs deal with a grappling of her inner demons, the fashion also appears ready for combat. One that certainly does is the cropped biker jacket with silver metal eyelets by Alexander McQueen, complete with a crystal harness from the label’s resort 2023 collection. There are also more upbeat, celebratory style moments in the show that represent a sense of overcoming—like the custom, gold moiré Alexander McQueen suit she wears for the campy house track “Babylon.” A glorious ending note? The fall 2007 couture gown from Christian Lacroix she wears in an interlude video for the tour, directed by Nick Knight.

As the new tour continues to develop and tour across the globe, time will only tell if even more dramatic Gaga looks are on their way (it is only night one, after all!). But for the Chromatica Ball debut, Gaga has already brought forward some of her best tour fashion yet, fusing a mixture of custom and archival numbers for a one-of-a-kind wardrobe. We’d expect nothing less from her.

Below, a closer look at Gaga’s new Chromatica Ball tour style.

Inside The Monster Ball: Lady Gaga Reveals Plans for Ambitious New Tour

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

J ust two weeks after Lady Gaga ‘s Fame Kills Tour with Kanye West was cancelled, the ambitious pop star announced plans for an unprecedented “multimedia artistic experience” called The Monster Ball . The show was originally slated to premiere in London in early 2010, but the singer rallied her Haus of Gaga and is set to launch the trek on November 27th, four days after the release of The Fame Monster . Rehearsals for The Monster Ball begin next week and details about the show have been scarce until now. Lady Gaga revealed the tour’s theme, stage design and plans for The Fame Monster in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone . For more details on the tour, see our story in the next issue, on stands October 28th.

Look back at Lady Gaga’s most memorable fashion moments.

Can you talk about the songs on The Fame Monster ? This is a new album. It’s eight songs, I could have put more songs on it, but I just decided not to because I thought they fit beautifully together. I’m really excited about all my new work, and I’ve been going through some really wonderful times and some really rough times all at once, so it’s been really good for my artistry. On the re-release, I wrote this song called “Speechless,”which I think is the best song I’ve ever written. It’s about my dad, it’s a really beautiful ballad. It’s piano-driven, and there’s no beat on it, it’s all live instruments. I produced it with Ron Fair, so we did a full live orchestra, recorded everything with live drums, live guitar and bass with me playing piano. We got that really organic, delicious feeling.

What was the thinking behind The Monster Ball? I wanted to really put together a show that would be the most beautiful, expensive-looking, delicious show, but that my fans wouldn’t have to pay a ton of money to come see. So we’re playing a few nights in a row. I’ve got super loyal fans, so I feel this tremendous obligation to take care of them.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

You said it was a pop-electro opera. Yeah. It’s the first ever, so it’s really whatever I want it to be. The theatrics and story elements are in the style of an opera. Imagine if you could take the sets of an opera, which are very grand and very beautiful, and put them through a pop-electro lens. The design of the show is very, very forward, very, very innovative. I’ve been thinking about ways to play with the shape of this stage and change the way that we watch things. So what I’ve done is I’ve designed a stage with Haus of Gaga that is essentially a frame with forced perspective, and the frame is put inside the stage.

It’s got kind of a triangular inset, like a diamond, and everywhere we’re playing, the dimensions fit this box that I’m bringing, so it’s this giant box that fits into every show. So no matter where I go, my fans get the same experience. So often you go into theaters and there’s ambient light flying in from all sorts of places, and the audience is in different spots, and the stage is in different shapes and lengths and widths and depths, so this is a way for me to control all the light and all of the different elements of the show. The theme of the show is evolution.

How will that theme express itself? Each one of these songs on my album represents a different demon that I’ve faced in myself, so the music is much more personal. I don’t write about fame or money at all on this new record. So we talked about monsters and how, I believe, that innately we’re all born with the monsters already inside of us — I guess in Christianity they call it original sin — the prospect that we will, at some point, sin in our lives, and we will, at some point, have to face our own demons, and they’re already inside of us. So we talked about growth, and that led us into this kind of scientific space, and we started talking about evolution and the evolution of humanity and how we begin as one thing, and we become another.

This is the first time you’ve had the resources to do a tour the way you wanted. You’ve visualized ambitious things before, but you probably weren’t able to do it to this extent. No, I couldn’t, but there was one major ingredient that was missing, and that’s my fans. Now, I have the inspiration of my fans, and I know what they want. I think there’s a lot of artists that are very self-serving, but I’m not one of them. When I create and make music, I make music that my fans want to hear. My record label didn’t want to put out that photo that’s my album cover, with the brown hair.

Lady Gaga Becomes Joaquin Phoenix's Partner-in-Insanity in 'Joker: Folie à Deux' Trailer

Everything we know about 'joker: folie à deux', lady gaga says she's 'writing some of my best music' as she celebrates her birthday.

They found it too confusing? It was World War III. They were like, “It’s confusing, it’s too dark, you look gothic, it’s not pop,” and I said, “You don’t know what pop is, because everyone was telling me I wasn’t pop last year, and now look — so don’t tell me what pop is, I know what pop is.” It’s funny, because I fought and fought and fought, and I actually ended up having two covers, because I wanted to do this yin and yang presentation with the covers. When I go to see what my fans are saying, I go onto GagaDaily — they see the cover and say, “I don’t really like the blonde one, but the brown one is fucking sick. They love it, and I know what they love, so I make it for them, I don’t care what anybody else wants.

Were there elements of the Fame Kills Tour with Kanye West that were going to be in The Monster Ball? I’m certainly inspired by what we were doing, but I made a decision based on integrity not to use any of the things that we had designed together.

So it’s the great lost tour, then. Yeah, probably. I guess that’s kind of perfectly epic, isn’t it, though? Isn’t that exactly what’s supposed to happen? It just wasn’t the right timing. I don’t want to embellish on it too much, because I want to respect Kanye’s privacy. But we just had our own reasons. We’re real friends, real friends can make decisions like that, and we wanted to keep the momentum going in terms of pop music staying innovative with hip-hop and R&B, and we really wanted to do it, and it just wasn’t the right time. But who’s to say what will happen in the future?

Is this tour going to include the band and dancers we saw on SNL ? It’s going to be much bigger, but I love my guys. My dancers that are with me now have been with me for two years. I just shot a music video for “Bad Romance” and the Haus of Gaga did the whole art direction for it. We worked with Francis Lawrence, he’s a movie director, and he almost never does music videos anymore, and I’m really impressed, even with myself — it’s so amazing. That’s another thing that keeps me going, when you have moments of adversity and challenge in your life, you have to dig deep. It’s my music and my sadness that runs into one another and mutates and gives me the ability to make new things.

Have you already begun to plan the show’s fashion? The fashion, certainly, is going to be another exploration and another level from where we were with the Fame Ball. The theme of monsters is certainly going to be an influence, as well as the theme of evolution and change. It’s going to be a truly artistic experience that is going to take the form of the greatest post-apocalyptic house party that you’ve ever been to.

The Monster Ball is the second concert tour by Lady Gaga to promote The Fame Monster , her sophomore album. The tour was officially announced on October 15, 2009, after her joint concert tour with rapper Kanye West, titled " Fame Kills ", was suddenly canceled. Described by Gaga as "the first-ever 'pop electro opera'", The Monster Ball Tour began four days after the release of The Fame Monster .

Initially, hip-hop artist Kanye West and Lady Gaga had plans to launch a joint tour together. Fame Kills: Starring Lady Gaga and Kanye West was confirmed in September 2009 , as a concert tour that West and Gaga would co-headline. In the aftermath of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards , West made a public statement that he would take a break from the music industry following the media and public reaction to his outburst during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for winning the Moonman for "Best Female Video". Nevertheless, the complete schedule for the tour was released, with the tour set to begin on November 10, 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona. Shortly afterward, the tour was officially canceled without any explanation. Gaga addressed the situation at Billboard's annual Women in Music luncheon where she cited creative differences as the reason for the tour's cancelation. In an interview she stated, "[Kanye] is going to take a break, but the good news is, I am not."

After ensuring the public that she would be embarking on a solo tour in lieu of the defunct tour, Gaga officially announced The Monster Ball Tour on October 15, 2009 . The tour had originally been planned to debut in London in early 2010 , but was rescheduled, and launched on November 27, 2009, in Montreal, QC. Rapper, Kid Cudi , and singer, Jason Derülo , were confirmed as the supporting act for the tour. While Cudi was confirmed to be supporting Gaga from the beginning of the tour, it was reported that Derülo would join the tour beginning on December 16, 2009. Cudi was kicked off of the tour after the December 14th show due to inappropriate behavior towards a fan. The official poster for the tour features Gaga in her signature Versace 676 sunglasses and what she has dubbed " The Orbit ", which she first wore on the October 3 , 2009 edition of Saturday Night Live . The contraption was designed by Nasir Mazhar in collaboration with Gaga's own creative production company, Haus of Gaga .

Broadcast and recordings

Fans who met Gaga after various shows confirmed that she will be releasing a 3D movie of the tour. This is one of the reasons behind the 3-D glasses included in the Super Deluxe version of The Fame Monster . On March 4, 2010, Gaga Daily announced via Twitter : “ The Monster Ball DVD is going to be released and it will be in 3D! ” On March 8, 2010, a rep from Interscope Records released the following statement to MTV News : “there are talks about a 3D concert and DVD in the near future.” On February 14, 2011, while on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , Gaga announced that there will be an HBO special of the concert. The program was filmed during Gaga's February 21-22 shows at Madison Square Garden and will be titled "Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden." HBO confirmed that the special will air on May 7, 2011 and will be directed by Laurieann Gibson. [1]
