This exhilarating tour, starting from Reykjavik Airport, will take you to the scenic  volcano eruption area.  Even though it may sound daunting at first, there’s no need to worry! This is a fissure volcano, meaning it causes no disruption to air traffic, and it is entirely safe to fly above it. See the hot, steaming lava spewing from the narrow fissure and flowing on the fresh lava field formed after the recent eruption. Volcanic eruption alone is a rare occasion itself , but for it to happen in the same location within the span of one year is even more remarkable!

We’ll end our extraordinary helicopter flight with a scenic route over Iceland’s capital and see the famous attractions from above before taking off at Reykjavik Airport.

Please note

  • There is a 4-person minimum passenger requirement.
  • All our flights are weather dependent and we have to abide by the rules and regulations set in place by the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. If we have to cancel your flight due to weather or other factors out of our control, we will try to reschedule your flight or give you a full refund.
  • Due to the nature of the flight, we can not accommodate children under the age of 2 years old on this tour. Exceptions can be discussed for private tours.
  • Volcanoes are a natural phenomenon, and the level of volcanic activity at the site varies daily. Even if the volcano is not erupting during your visit, visiting the area is still fascinating.

Is it safe to hike up to the eruption site?

Authorities in Iceland have taken the necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety. Hiking in the area will only be allowed once they give the go-ahead. Keep an eye on the situation and regular updates .

When exploring volcanic areas, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance, be mindful of gas exposure, and know the direction of the wind to avoid any mishaps.

Is it possible to go to the restroom during the hike?

There are no restrooms at the area just nature 😊 We do recommend that people use the restrooms in Grindavík where we stop for lunch before we start the hike.

How To Visit The Volcano?

The best and safest way to visit a volcano is with a guided tour. Expert guides will be able to lead you to the eruption site, choosing the most secure paths and the optimal distance to observe the newly formed lava fields so you can get the best, safest, and most enjoyable experience. You can choose to book the hike to the eruption site or book a helicopter tour and see the volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula from above!

What to bring to The Volcano?

Make sure that you are prepared before heading out to the volcano. We recommend wearing hiking clothes and packing a backpack with:

  • Extra layers, gloves and headwear
  • Good waterproof hiking shoes
  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Snacks for the hike & water
  • Camera and extra batteries

Is the eruption site open for a visit?

The situation at the eruption site can change. Please check regularly for updates on on accessible areas and safety rules.

Do I Need A Guide To Accompany Me To The Eruption Site?

It is not obligatory to be accompanied by a professional guide to visit the site. However, taking a guided tour is safer than visiting the eruption site as fellow travelers will accompany you, and a local professional guide will ensure your safety.

Is it allowed to walk on the lava?

According to the Environmental Agency of Iceland, walking on the lava is forbidden and can be very dangerous. The top layer can easily break when stepped on, causing hazards to people. The lava at Fagradalsfjall Volcano is a unique geological monument that we must respect and protect. It is important for visitors to leave no traces such as throwing stones at the lava or making inscriptions on it. Lavas are under special protection according to art. 61 of the Nature Conservation Act. One of the biggest risks of walking on new lava is breaking the top layer over an unknown lava tube. Falling into a lava tube that's still several hundred degrees Celcius can lead to injuries.

Is the eruption still ongoing?

For updates on the eruption, please check the news about the volcano eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula .

Does the weather make any difference at the Eruption Site?

Yes, the weather can make all the difference and determine whether you can reach the eruption site or if you will enjoy the journey or not. You can find Weather information here and a gas forecast  here .

Magnificent Volcanic Eruption in Iceland near Reykjavik - Fagradals mountain

There is a lot of Volcanic activity in Reykjanes peninsula.  It started first in March 2021 and has been on and off several times since. Volcano experts foresee that this will continue for several years now. Activities Iceland are offering helicopter tours to view the area. Please be aware of when the volcano is active the spots sell out very fast.

Could you be interested to experience something extra unique, something you might not have the possibility to experience ever again in your live?

We offer helicopter tours that fly over the magnificent natural phenomenon, where you can observe the new bursting, fiery lava. There is a great demand for these tours, and it is therefore important to contact us as soon as possible if interested.

This type of volcanic eruption is called basaltic lava eruption and it flows from long, parallel fissures. This type of eruption could go on for many years, even decades. It is amazing scenic sights to see the glowing lava run slowly in a lava river throughout the valley of Geldingadalir.

This area is very close to the Keflavik international airport and the Blue Lagoon. It is only about 30 km from Reykjavik city and the smoke from the volcano can often be seen from the capital, especially at night. The area is a very volcanic active area with bubbling hot springs in some places, although the last actual volcano eruption was in this area in the year 1240.

On the helicopter tour you will experience mother nature’s power on a close range. It should not be missed out on, when travelling to Iceland.

About the tour:

We will meet you in Reykjavik, where we head off flying south west towards the eruption in Geldingadalir / Merardalir / Sundhnjukagigar. This tour takes about 30 - 55 minutes. This is an experience for all the senses, not only the view is magnificent, but the smell and the sounds of the lava bursting out of the volcano play´s also a huge roll here.

Important information:

  • We only have two helicopters, with 5 - 6 seats in each one. We recommend that you book in good time, as this is a very popular tour, and it gets sold out quickly.
  • We will cancel the tour if the conditions on the site are not safe

We are obliged to charge cancellation fees to passenger(s) as follows: Less than 2 weeks and more than 72 hours – 10% Less than 72 hours– 100%

What is the price of an Iceland helicopter tour?

As you may have already guessed, taking a helicopter over Iceland isn’t exactly the cheapest activity. That said, tours vary in terms of duration and attractions covered, so the cost can vary quite a bit. To help you choose the best tour for your budget, here is a comparison chart of Iceland helicopter tour prices :

My experience flying over Iceland

While we had photographed the island countless times, taking a helicopter tour over Iceland opened up a whole new world of possibilities for us. Even though it was a short tour, I know that we’ll do it again as soon as we have the chance.

During our Iceland volcano helicopter tour , we were able to see places we wouldn’t have otherwise seen, and at the same time, we enjoyed some completely new perspectives of places we have seen a thousand times from the ground. It was incredible getting aerial views of some of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland!

We booked our Iceland heli-tour for the first day of our trip, but the weather conditions weren’t ideal, so we had to postpone the tour for the last day of our visit, about 15 days later. Luckily, the weather was amazing this time, so we got wonderful views. In short, I suggest booking your tour for the beginning of your trip just in case you have to reschedule it.

Iceland landscape, helicopter tour iceland volcano

Moreover, if you book any of the helicopter rides in Iceland that I recommended in this guide, you’ll be in for a treat. The pilot will point out all the important sights and tell you interesting information during the tour. This way, you’ll get the most out of your flight and understand exactly what you’re looking at as you soar over the island.

I recognize that this is an expensive activity, but it’s 100% worth it. So, if you have your heart set on flying over Iceland by helicopter , don’t overthink it!

That’s it from me! I hope you enjoy this stunning country and your helicopter tour of Iceland . If you have any questions, leave me a comment below, and I’ll be happy to help you.

Happy flying!

Much has been written about sightseeing in Iceland . It is, after all, a landscape defined by its staggering natural attractions, characterised by its rugged coastlines, smoky mountains , cragged lava fields and creeping glaciers . Around every corner, every twist in the road, it is as though Iceland materialises countryside in a bid to forever outdo itself.

Tours leave from Reykjavík , Akureyri and the east on a daily basis, carting busloads of visitors along the famed Golden Circle and Diamond Circle sightseeing routes . Catching such fantastic sites as Þingvellir National Park , Gullfoss Waterfall , Dettifoss , Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss , Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Haukadalur Geothermal Valley , Iceland never fails to amaze and inspire the travellers lucky enough to appreciate it.

But is there a way to take sightseeing in Iceland to the next level? How does one beat the crowds, cut down on their travel time and bag a lifetime of memories in the process? Well, there’s only one option.

Sightseeing by Helicopter. For lack of a better word... Flightseeing.

Oh yes, for those looking for a truly V.I.P. experience in Iceland, taking a helicopter ride across this wild and mesmerising landscape is a serious must.

Not only do helicopters provide a fantastic aerial perspective over some of Iceland’s most beloved natural attractions, they also shoot an enormous jolt of adrenaline into the system, adding a level of action to the day that can hardly be substituted for a seat on the MiniBus .

A helicopter making a landing at one of Iceland's geothermal valleys.

Thankfully, there are a good number of options for helicopter flights in Iceland, ranging from the one-hour turnaround to a full day’s adventure soaring among the clouds. Many of these flights choose to specialise in certain routes, such as the Golden Circle, while others promise a wider appeal, soaring across an open landscape with the possibility of making a landing on a mountain summit.

  • See Also:  Top Activities in Iceland for Adrenaline Junkies

We will explore these options together to ensure you find the helicopter tour that best suits you. Whatever it is, you’re sure to be in for the ride of your life.

There are a number of benefits to sightseeing by helicopter rather than by minibus, coach or Self Drive. The first is, naturally, the most obvious; the views by helicopter are immeasurably stunning.

Many Helicopter Tours take you flying over the stunning mountains of Iceland's Central Highlands.

Unlike flightseeing in a light aircraft , helicopters keep relatively low to the ground, meaning you’ll still feel like you’re getting an intimate appreciation of the attraction in question. Given your height, you will also be able to look down upon sights not visible from the road, such as a smouldering volcanic caldera or an untouched canyon, deep in the highlands.

  • See Also:  Top 5 Destinations in Iceland

They can also land almost anywhere, be it in front of a waterfall, on a glacier or even a cragged mountain ridge. In this regards, sightseeing by helicopter is certainly the most flexible and accessible means of accessing the Icelandic countryside. Not only that, but this wealth of choice when it comes to possible landings means that you’ll likely come to experience incredible panoramic views inaccessible to almost everyone else.

Given that Iceland’s helicopter tours leave from beside Reykjavík Domestic Airport, take-off will immediately mean you are privy to the city from above. As you rise into the air, the colourful tin-roofs of the earth’s northernmost capital city quickly transforms into a kaleidoscopic, patchwork quilt.

Noting the sheer openness of Reykjavik’s surroundings, you will instantly gain an awareness of just how small this “city” is—it’s impossible to think otherwise as the endless wildlands of Iceland stretch out over the horizon.

  • See also:  A History of Reykjavik

Another benefit of sightseeing by helicopter is, undoubtedly, the small group sizes. Helicopter tours in Iceland can take up to a maximum of eight guests, with the usual minimum at 4. This means that during your trip, you will be sharing the magic with only a few other people and your pilot, ensuring an intimate and personalised experience.

A helicopter that has landed on Langjökull, the second largest glacier in Iceland.

Unless you happen to be a pilot yourself, or just some strangely-obsessed whirlybird fanatic, chances are you won’t consider what helicopter you’ll be flying in. A helicopter is a helicopter, right? Wrong.

The particular type of helicopter used for sightseeing in Iceland differs greatly between the operators, but all are equally safe, managed by experienced hands, and suitable for the task at hand.

You could be riding in an AS365N Dauphin, for instance, a double-engined chopper capable of carrying up to eight passengers and reaching speeds of up to 275 km/155 knots an hour.

The South Coast, as seen from the cockpit of a helicopter.

Alternatively, you might find yourself seated in an AS350 B2 Ecureuil–Astar, a smaller helicopter that holds 5 people and is largely used for aerial photography work.

You might even be riding in the smaller Bell 206 Jetranger, otherwise known as “The Bell”. This helicopter seats up to four people, but on longer flights, will only take three (this to provide a greater level of comfort during the trip). The Bell also comes with an interchangeable door, a modification provided especially so that photographers can get the best possible snapshots.

If you’re the type of photographer looking for that epic perspective, The Bell can be the chosen helicopter of the day (at an extra fee), as long as the tour operator is notified beforehand.

A helicopter overlooking the flaming crevasses of Holahraun Lava Fields.

A quick look online will reveal the sheer wealth of options when it comes down to choosing where to sightsee in Iceland by helicopter. Many operators split their flights into different categories; Glacier flights, Reykjavik flights, tours to volcanoes and mountains and geothermal valleys and highland canyons. It seems the list is never-ending, and for that, there is only the landscape to thank.

One of the most popular options is the Reykjavik summit tour, a flight that takes you from the civilised flatground of the city all the way up to a mountain summit. Depending on conditions, and the desires of your pilot, these flights tend to land either on Mt. Esja—the tabletop mountain that overlooks Reykjavik and Faxi Bay—or within the Blue Mountains, in the Reykjanes Peninsula.

  • See also:  9 Best Cheap Things to Do in Reykjavik

Of course, helicopters do go further afield, but if you have particular attractions which you are desperate to see from the air, it is your responsibility to make sure that your chosen tour includes said attraction. Given the sheer size of Iceland and the long distances between many of attractions, helicopter pilots can only fly a certain distance and back before needing to refuel.

If you are interested in discovering the frozen plateaus of one of Iceland’s beloved glaciers, then a helicopter tour will save you the hassle of not just driving to it, but actually hiking it. Nothing feels quite as satisfying as landing at the glacier summit without exerting any physical effort—the only thing that could make it better is smiling smugly at a group of exhausted glacier hikers as they wheeze their way to the peak.

Helicopter Pilots in Iceland are knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about flightseeing.

Particularly popular are helicopter trips to geothermal valleys, craters and volcanic calderas across Iceland. This is a fantastic means of reaching these authentically Icelandic areas and presents the unique chance to observe the rising pillars of steam that so characterise these areas from the air.

And, once again, there comes with it the luxurious sensation of landing among a bunch of people not wise enough to travel by helicopter themselves. Aren't you special?

What Do I Need To Bring On A Helicopter Tour?

A happy helicopter passenger!

The good news is, helicopter tours require very little but a level of courage from their guests. Don't underestimate the level of courage needed, however, given the feelings and sensations that come over one after lifting off (...let's face it, being a helicopter passenger is not a natural fit for most of us).

However, it is a good idea to keep in mind some common sense considerations before arriving at the airport for your tour. Most importantly is proof of purchase and ID (so the tour operator knows who you are), warm clothing and your camera. You will need warm clothing and good shoes based on where you will be landing and what you will be doing—don't get caught on a mountaintop in just your shorts and a t-shirt!

But most important is your camera. The panoramic sights and aerial perspectives are entirely out of this world and seemingly demand to be captured on film. One of the real pleasures of helicopter sightseeing is knowing that you won't see visual stimulation like this for a long time, so make the most of it!

Besides, this is a trip that you're going to want to look back on for the rest of your life.

Volcano Helicopter Tour from Reykjavik

Embark on a journey from Reykjavik to the 2023 & 2024 Sundhnukar eruption site and witness firsthand the latest volcanic activity in Iceland. Experiencing this natural wonder up close is truly extraordinary and should be on your must-do list when in Iceland.

The eruption site in Reykjanes Peninsula , commencing on March 19th, 2021, and lasting six months, shaped a vast lava plateau and numerous craters. Marking the first eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since the 14th century, it followed three weeks of over 50,000 earthquakes in the region.

A new eruption kicked off on August 3rd, 2022, as a crater began to form, and fresh lava joined the already expansive lava plateau.

On July 10th, 2023, the third eruption in this sequence began to take shape, with additional lava contributing to the extensive lava plateau.

December 18th, 2023, witnessed the fourth eruption in this series, surpassing the intensity of any previous eruptions in 2021. New lava flowed, further expanding the extensive lava plateau.

During this flight, marvel at the area from a bird’s-eye view, taking in the breathtaking colors and vastness of the craters, all while enjoying the surrounding scenery.

The total duration of the tour is approximately 60 minutes. Please note that landing at the eruption site is not available, but rest assured, we’ll provide you with the best viewing experience from the air.

Lava-Chasers and Volcanic Tourism

L ava-chasers flock to the world’s most active volcanoes, risking their lives to see nature’s raw power up close. Earth has over 1,500 active volcanoes and there is something about the violence and unpredictability that draws people in.

Lava-chasers indulge in what is sometimes called volcanic tourism: travel to sites of past and present geothermal activity. This can include active and dormant volcanoes, geysers, thermal and sulfur springs, and volcanic disaster sites.

Eruptions from the past

You cannot discuss volcanic tourism without mentioning Pompeii and Herculaneum. In 79AD, these two Roman cities were effectively wiped out by Mount Vesuvius. From the mid-1700s excavations began to reveal streets, villas, frescos, marketplaces, artworks, and bodies.

Over two million people visit the sites each year. As morbid as it may seem to some, people continue to be fascinated with the petrified bodies, frozen in their last moments.

On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens exploded. It was the most powerful volcanic eruption in US history. The eruption resulted in a debris avalanche, pyroclastic flows (a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter), mudflows, a 24km high ash column, earthquakes, and 57 deaths. The eruption was so powerful that it changed the volcano’s features, reducing the size of the crater, and collapsing a portion of the volcano.

After the dust settled, tourism activities resumed. Visitors who wish to climb the volcano need a special permit. However, many opt for a helicopter sightseeing tour of the collapsed north face. This stratovolcano is the most active in the United States and is due for an even larger explosion in the future.

In 1995, the Soufriere Hills volcano in Montserrat erupted, burying half of the small Caribbean island in several meters of ash. Some residents started new lives on other islands or in the United Kingdom. Some moved to the other half of the island.

But now, volcanic tourism is a major draw. Locals offer tours of Plymouth (the former capital) and some parts of the island’s exclusion zone. Visitors can see clock towers, church steeples, hotels, and homes peeking through the ash. Tours are advertised as showing the ‘Pompeii of the Caribbean’.

Volcanic tourism has provided a plethora of new jobs to islanders and exposed the wider world to a lesser-known Caribbean island. However, tourists need a special permit to enter the exclusion zone and cannot venture off on their own.

Recent eruptions

While eruptions in places like Hawaii have brought tourism activities to a halt many times, Icelanders tend to continue life as normal. In fact, they use the volcanic landscape to their advantage.

Since 2010, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano has become a big tourist draw. When the volcano starts to stir, lava escapes through vents and fissures in the glacier, creating a stunning spectacle of lava, steam, and ash. The volcano is so powerful that in the 2010s a particularly large eruption caused disruption as far away as mainland Europe. An ash cloud from the volcano blew across the northern and western parts of the continent, grounding flights for several days.

In 2021, the volcanic tourism industry in Iceland took off. Tourists flocked to the Fagradalsfjall and Geldingadalir volcanoes to watch rivers of lava streaming down the hillside. Visitors can have a picnic while watching new basalt eruptions. With a tour guide, visitors can get surprisingly close to the slow-moving lava.

Geothermal powerhouses

Hellish, scorching, and remote, the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is the result of a crazy convergence of three tectonic plates. It is one of the lowest points on Earth, as well as one of the hottest.

If you dare to venture in, you will find brightly colored sulfur springs, acid ponds, hydrothermal terraces, and salt formations. The otherworldly landscape draws both geologists and adventurous tourists.

Visitors can expect temperatures up to 50°C.

Risky hikes

Sometimes, the thrill of hiking to the top of a volcano is too strong to resist. This is surely the case for Volcan de Fuego and Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala, as well as Arenal in Costa Rica. These volcanoes are active, with the Guatemalan volcanoes spouting bits of ash and lava almost daily. Even though these eruptions are minor, authorities still dissuade the public from getting too close. Arenal is prone to landslides and suffers constant erosion.
