All of our vehicles are air conditioned and covered.  For approximately 4 months a year from the middle of May through the middle of September, you can expect the high temperatures in Houston will be between 90 and 109 degrees Fahrenheit/30 to 43 degrees Centigrade with 70% + humidity during the day.  We want you to be comfortable during a tour.

Texas Historic Homes

Texas Historic Home Tours List

There are many Historic Homes Tours in Texas. I wish all the special Holiday Home Tours in the Central Texas and Austin Texas area were held at different dates and times so I could schedule to see them all! Austin, TX; Dripping Springs, TX; Georgetown TX; Lockhart, TX; Taylor, TX and San Marcos, TX are some of the Central Texas towns that regularly hold special Holiday Historic Home Tours. I recently went on the Georgetown and Taylor Holiday Tours. I also went on the Historic Home Tour that Preservation Austin held in April and the Mid-Century Modern.. I also have attended the Gingerbread Historic Home Tour in Waxahachie TX as well as toured many historic homes in Dallas TX with Preservation Dallas. Galveston Texas holds its Historic Homes Tour every May. In addition to Historic Home Tours, there are many other Historic Texas buildings one can go tour including churches, courthouses, jails and more. I highly recommend the Painted Churches Tour  out of Schulenburg Texas and seeing other Painted Churches of Texas as well. Texas Historic Courthouses are also fun to tour and I know the Waxahachie Texas Courthouse is open for tours. I have also toured Texas Historic Jails such as the one in Lockhart Texas and the Gonzales Texas jail. If you are interested in touring Texas Historic Homes, follow these links to locations and organizations that hold historic home tours throughout the year.

England's Mike Browne takes historic G4D title deep in heart of Texas

This week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson PGA TOUR event in McKinney, Texas, can only hope to play host to a finish that rivals the exciting ending to the Golf 4 Disabilities (G4D) Tour event that preceded it at TPC Craig Ranch.

England’s Mike Browne made pars on his last three holes on Tuesday to hold off the Tour’s top-ranked player, Kipp Popert of Australia, and capture his third G4D Tour title by one stroke. Browne came home in 2-under 34 to shoot 73, finishing 36 holes at level-par 144. His score was one better than Popert, who had begun the day sharing the lead with Browne after an opening 71, and Spain’s Juan Postigo Arce, an amazing talent who competes on one leg and shot 71, tying the day’s low round.

Popert was one of four players who either held or was tied for the lead across a tightly contested final round at TPC Craig Ranch, which plays host to this week’s TOUR event beginning on Thursday. Popert was trying to land his 11 th championship on the All-Abilities circuit.

For historical purposes, this week marked the first official G4D Tour stop in the United States, one of nine stops on the 2024 circuit, and the 10 highly ranked players (eight men, two women) who attended from across the globe enjoyed the experience and hope that there will be more to follow.

With his left leg straightened and braced, there was little that Browne could do day-to-day. He could not drive, could not fly, had great difficulty trying to negotiate stairs and his overall quality of life plummeted. He said he contemplated ending his life by jumping out a second-story hospital window – if only his annoying leg brace would have allowed him to fit through it.

He ended up viewing a random poster promoting golf as an outlet for the disabled, and thought he’d try it once he made the astute decision to simplify his life by amputating the leg. He now plays using a prosthetic.

Browne had one of those early moments when first starting to hit golf balls on a range when he flushed a shot and got that "feel." The game just grabbed him. It hasn’t let him go, either, which is fortunate. He wakes up each day with goals, and golf gives him something to do. Browne, in fact, credits the game for not only changing his life, but saving it .

In an interview with the EDGA (organized in 2000, and formally known as the European Disabled Golf Association), Browne said of golf: “It gave me confidence. It just saved my life, really.”

He explained, “A lot of people think their life is over when they get injured, but I’m not the same. ‘That life’ (pre-injury) is done; I’ve got a new one now. Let’s make the most of it. That’s what I’m doing, and that’s what I’ve done."

Lachlan Wood (Australia), who overcame a horrendous car accident and spent five years away from golf before finding his way back, had opened with 72, and when he birdied the seventh and ninth holes, he moved into the lead midway through the final round. When Wood made two early bogeys on his back nine, Popert, Postigo Arce and Browne passed him at the top, all getting to even par shortly after the turn.

Browne got back in it with birdies at Nos. 10, 13 and 14. Postigo Arce, playing up ahead, birdied the 12th and 14th holes. Popert was heating up, too; he birdied three of his first four holes on his second nine. Brendan Lawlor of Ireland, a consistent contender among G4D competitors, made his own late move by shooting 3-under 33 on his final nine, but fell two shots shy of Browne, tying for fourth with Wood.

In the end, Browne, whose strength is his driving, just proved a tad steadier, and that showed in his finish. After a bogey at the par-3 15 th , he was mistake-free, doing what he had to do by making pars to win. It was his second big win in months, coming on the heels of winning the G4D Tour Season Finale in Dubai the week of the DP World World Tour Championship.

In Dubai, Browne posed on the 18 th green with his G4D champion's trophy alongside Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard, the tournament champion, and Rory McIlroy, who captured the Race to Dubai. Browne marvels at the experiences that golf has given him.

At his lowest point, when he figured he could take no more pain and all his social skills had vanished, Browne remembers sitting in his hospital bed and crying for three days straight. He knew he needed help, and that was the point he finally would ask for it. And then his life would take a starkly different turn when he saw a single golf poster.

On Tuesday in Texas, that time seemed so long ago.

Golf saved my life in that aspect,” he said. “It gave me everything that I was missing. It gave me purpose.”

On Tuesday, it gave him a great victory, and a small piece of history as the first G4D player to win an official Tour event in the United States. Best yet: At 46, Browne believes he is just getting started.

Joanna Gaines Just Gave an Epic Tour of Magnolia's Headquarters

Not only is there a coffee bar, but there's also a golf simulator and basketball court.

Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

While the Gaineses initially thought they would turn the old Grand Karem Shrine Building into their headquarters, that historic structure is now their Hotel 1928 , so the growing brand needed somewhere to work out of. Well, in 2021, according to KCEN-TV , the designer duo purchased the old Waco Tribune-Herald building that was constructed in 1950 and decided to renovate it to create their perfect HQ. It took them a while, but in 2023, the Gaineses were finally able to perform a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the 110,000-square-foot building.

Keep reading to learn all you need to know about the Magnolia headquarters before you take a trip to Waco, or if you're simply curious to find out more about the now renovated 70-year-old structure.

How Far Is the Magnolia Headquarters From the Silos?

According to Apple maps, the headquarters, which is located at 900 Franklin Avenue, is about a ten-minute walk from Magnolia Market, aka the Silos. If you're staying at the hotel , you can walk to their headquarters in just about seven minutes, and if you've just visited the Cottonland Castle, aka the Waco Castle , you're either a 50 minute walk or a six minute drive away depending on what mood you're in.

Is Magnolia Headquarters Open to the Public?

We hate to burst your bubble, but no. The Waco Tribune-Herald reported (assumedly out of their new headquarters) that while other Magnolia structures are designed for shopping, lounging, or eating, this building is off-limits to the public eye. Unless you're visiting Waco on direct Magnolia-related business, your only view into the HQ is through the front windows or via Joanna's Instagram reels , one of which you can see below.

Pause—Was That a Basketball Court in the Magnolia Headquarters?

Oh, yes—you saw that correctly. As someone who has been inside the Magnolia headquarters when I went to Waco to stay in Hotel 1928 , I can confirm that there is a court that can be used for a multitude of sports purposes inside the building. In fact, there are quite a few amenities in their HQ. Magnolia's reported $21 million renovation also included putting in a golf simulator, a coffee bar, a test kitchen for developing recipes for Joanna's cookbooks, and plenty of places to lounge about. The coffee bar sits at the bottom of a three-story atrium that was once the press room, so it was aptly named The Press Room, and it's open for both employees and guests, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald .

Something I learned while visiting is that the books that line the walls in the HQ all came from the same collection of vintage novels in the hotel. When Chip bought late Texan author Larry McMurtry's bookstore, he bit off more than he could chew when it came to how many books McMurtry kept, so the couple put a good chunk of them here for their employees to browse if they so pleased.

Since you can't actually visit the headquarters, these little snippets as Joanna rolls through the floor plan will just have to do!

Hampton National Historic Site Tours

Hampton National Historic Site

Hampton National Historic Site preserves 63 acres of what was once the second largest plantation in Maryland. At one time in its history, the Hampton plantation had over 24,000 acres and throughout its history saw over 500 enslaved people work the site. At the center of the park sits the historic Hampton Mansion, a late 1700s Georgian architecture building that, upon its completion, was once possibly the largest private residence in the United States. Originally preserved on the basis of “architectural merit” (the first National Park of its kind), recent scholarship has enhanced the park’s ability to explore the lives and identities of the enslaved and free people of Hampton. Not only is the site a destination for architectural and material culture enthusiasts, but also for those looking to learn the history of one of the darkest times in American history where the words “land of the free” were truly put to the test. The majority of the 63-acre park is free and open to the public on a daily basis, including historic gardens, trails, and structures such as quarters for the enslaved and stables. Visitor services, including ranger programs and access to the park visitor center, are available Thursdays-Sundays. The highlight of many visits to Hampton is the opportunity to go inside the historic Hampton Mansion. Mansion access is only available by attending a guided tour. Tour access is limited to 15 visitors per tour. To accommodate growing demand in visiting the Hampton Mansion, in May 2024 the park launched a pilot program to allow visitors to access tickets to mansion tours in advance of their visit to the park.

Notifications and Alerts

Reservations for Hampton National Historic Site Tours will open at 10:00 a.m. ET on May 1, 2024.

Need to Know

Tours of the Hampton Mansion are available year-round, Thursdays-Sundays. Visitors may book reservations beginning 3 months in advance until midnight the day before the tour.

If visitors are unable to obtain reservations for the day of their planned visit, they are welcome to do many of the non-reservation-based activities including outdoor programs, self-guided visits, Jr. Ranger activities, and more!

Tickets are free. However, a nonrefundable $1.00 advance reservation service fee applies to each ticket.

The park strongly recommends reservations. If a tour has not been completely filled the day of a visit, visitors can get remaining tickets on a first come, first serve basis in the park visitor center. There is no guarantee that tours will have tickets available the day of the visit.

Tours start promptly at the specified time at the visitor entrance of mansion (atop the accessibility ramp). Visitors should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to tour time to allow for introduction and restroom stops. Visitors may not join the tour after it has entered the Hampton Mansion.

All visitors must pick up tour tickets in the visitor center prior to the tour.

Food and drink (including water and gum), backpacks and large bags, selfie sticks and other photography equipment are not permitted in the historic mansion. Pets (non-service animals) are not permitted in any of the park buildings.

The mansion is made accessible via a lift in the entrance room. Let your tour leader know ahead of time that you will require use of the lift to enter the house. Some parts of the house are not accessible, and tour leaders will adjust their tours accordingly based on accessibility needs. Visitors should be aware that tours last 45-60 minutes of standing and walking.

The B-17 aircraft consumes 200 gallons of fuel per hour, equating to $3,200 per hour to operate.

Aboard both the B-17 and B-25, passengers can experience a profound emotional connection.

According to officials from the Flying Legends of Victory tour, the majority of military personnel riding these aircraft were merely 17 or 18 years old during WWII, with some knowing it would be a suicide mission.

Pilots, typically 23 years old, navigated these perilous missions.

Remarkably, they say only four B-17s remain worldwide, with this particular aircraft being the sole option for passenger flights—a rarity indeed.

Additionally, the distinctive sound of the B-17 and B-25 aircraft has been featured in the new Apple TV series, "Masters of the Air".

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. More information about the Texas MS 150 and Bike MS is available at events.nationalmssociety.org .
