history school visits

Including larger than life, interactive performances, open-ended workshops and more intimate classroom-based sessions, our unique range of History Workshops and Shows for Primary Schools offers pupils privileged perspectives on the lives of people in the past – and asks important questions about ways that the past has affected the present. And there are four exciting options awaiting you: The Brilliant Britons, Time Travel Theatre, Time Travel Tourists and Historical Maths.

Our workshops are available as in-person sessions and live streamed workshops - all of which are listed below.

“Ten out of ten! I was taken aback by just how good the Time Travel Theatre actors were – and by the impacts the workshops had on the pupils!” History Co-ordinator, Christ Church Primary, Leigh
"Thank you from us all for the fantastic workshops -  I have had so much positive feedback  from the different classes and the content you delivered was spot on for each of the groups.  I was in awe of how easy you made it look, which as a teacher with 20 years experience I don't say very often! -  we will certainly have no hesitation in booking you again in the future." History Through Drama day,  Kirkland and Caterall St Helen's Primary
“The children absolutely loved it and Chris expertly managed to keep them all engaged for over an hour which is a challenge in itself! Chris was so enthusiastic and full of information about Neil Armstrong and really brought History to life for all children. The resources were brilliant and pitched just right -  challenging the more able children whilst allowing our SEN children to be involved too. We will look forward to booking more workshops with you in the future and will highly recommend your workshop to colleagues. Thankyou for making it such an easy process to enquire and book a workshop - we really appreciate this!" A Visit from Neil Armstrong, Bridgewater Primary
"We enjoyed the workshops tremendously. The children learnt a great deal, in an interactive and engaging manner. They gained the intended knowledge from the year specific workshops. They gained a sense of enjoyment through the drama activities and were able to talk, at length, about their activities afterwards. Jo was fabulous and made the day very special for all the children." Cloverlea Primary School

The Brilliant Britons

Ten thousand years of British history in just an hour and a half!

Join our quarreling historians, Professor Past and Dr Dunne, as they trace their families’ roots from the dawn of the Stone Age to the end of the Second World War – taking in over ten thousand years of British history in a fast-paced and action-packed hour and a half. This hilarious and highly interactive presentation has the unique feature of covering key features of every age demanded by the National Curriculum / Curriculum for Excellence, from the birth of civilization to the Roman invasion and from the Viking incursions to the rise of the Saxons – as well as paying brief visits to the bakery at the heart of the Great Fire of London, St Paul's Cathedral in Victorian times and the Home Front in World War II. Not only that, of course, but the experience can be enjoyed by up to 420 pupils in a single day - as well as supporting schools approaches to teaching British values.

"The students gained knowledge about WW1- how it began and life as a soldier, they developed their role play skills in the scenario workshop and learnt about how valuable team work is. We would definitely recommend you to other schools around the area, as well as other teachers who we are friends with. It was a really successful day and the children haven't stopped talking about it." Ditton Primary School

London History – Through Drama (London History Day 31st May)

The ideal way to celebrate London History Day, London History – Through Drama can accommodate the whole of up to a two-form entry school in a single day in an exploration of more than 2,500 years of London history. Specially developed to support children’s understanding of the important part London has played, continues to play and will always play in history, a day comprises …

An interactive assembly, bringing to life what London ‘is” – and why the city is so important, both nationally and internationally.

Workshops (one per year group), using age-appropriate, drama-based activities to explore different aspects of London’s history:

  • EYFS: Transport for Londoners … how have the ways Londoners get about their city changed over the centuries?
  • Year 1: The Great Fire of London … who or what caused it, how did it spread – and how did it shape London’s future?
  • Year 2: Victorian London … how did the Victorians change the way London looked – and the ways Londoners spend their free time?
  • Year 3: Iron Age London … what can the Iron Age Hill Camps of Epping Forest tell us about London in the days before the city even got its name?
  • Year 4: Rebellion against the Romans … why did the Battle of Londinium give such hope to Boudica’s band of rebellious Britons – and how did it all turn out?
  • Year 5: Shakespeare’s London … how did Shakespeare change life in London – and what was his relationship with the Tudor court?
  • Year 6: London Strikes Back – the Battle of Cable Street … how did London’s diverse population rise to the challenge of the pre-war fascists – and what were the lasting impacts?
“Our students were thoroughly engaged during Jackon's sessions (and so were the teachers!). Our pupils were so enthused and excited about history after the sessions. They loved all of the drama and being active! History Through Drama day, Castlehill Primary School

Ruby Slippers’ Tour of British History! - Whole School History Day

A unique way to explore both history and British Values - in just one day! There are two things you should know about Ruby Slippers. First, she has a passion for learning as much as she can about and from history. And second, with just a click of her own slippers (and a little bit of imagination), Ruby can visit any time from the past that she wants! And she can help both one, two and three-form entry schools explore both British history and British Values in the course of a single day!

One-Form Entry

Your day will start with a whole-school interactive presentation in which Ruby introduces herself and her powers - then allows the pupils to select which periods of British history she visits. As each epoch is unveiled, she’ll invite some of the pupils to join her in playing characters from the Stone Age to the Roman occupation of Britain, from the tussles between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings (and, eventually, the Normans, too!) to Tudor Times - and from the Great Fire of London to the Victorians and the two World Wars. She will then work with each class in turn to bring aspects of history alive though drama-based activities - with teachers choosing from the Stone/Bronze/Iron Ages, the Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks, the Romans in Britain, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, the Normans, the Mayans, the Tudors, Mr William Shakespeare, the Great Fire of London, the Gunpowder Plot, the Victorians, World War I and World War II.

Two-Form Entry

Don’t feel left out - because you get choices, too! You can elect to have three of the interactive presentations, each for a third of the school community - or two (each for half of the community), plus two Question and Answer sessions (each for one class). And you can also, of course, choose to book two days of Ruby’s time - offering the whole school the whole experience!

Three-Form Entry

Ruby doesn’t want to leave larger schools feeling overlooked - so you have the option of going for three of her presentations, each for a third of the school community.

“Thank you so much to Helen and the team the pupils had a brilliant day yesterday. The performance and workshops were engaging getting the pupils to think about what they had seen and learnt.” Fairmead Special School

Time Travel Tourist - the Apollo Adventurers

Celebrating 50 years since the first humans walked on the moon

It was in July 1969 that Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar landscape and uttered the famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Since then, only another eleven astronauts have walked on the moon - and none since 1972. This unique programme, though, gives your pupils an opportunity to meet and work with one of the people behind Apollo 11 - Margaret Hamilton (who led the team designing the mission's software) or Astronaut Armstrong himself. Your Tourist will be more than happy to meet the school at an assembly - then visit a number of classes during the day in workshops using drama techniques to bring to life the Apollo 11 adventure, and her/his role in its success.

We have lots of other Time Travel Tourists available, too, including; Mrs Pankhurst , General Haig , Siegfried Sassoon and Kitty Wilkinson. So if there's someone that your pupils would like to meet - just ask!

Suitable For: up to 30 pupils at a time, EYFS - KS2 / P1 - P7

Exploring (according to age): preparations for the mission; history, characteristics and composition of the moon; the Apollo 11 astronauts; the role of the moon in future space exploration.

Duration: 1 hour + (depending on how many classes)

“Our pupils absolutely loved having “Neil Armstrong” in school for the day, the workshops were really engaging and further embedded the pupils’ knowledge about the moon and the moon landing. It was a brilliant day that the children thoroughly enjoyed." Canons Primary Schooll
"The children had an absolutely amazing time and learnt so much. The children were so convinced that Neil Armstrong had travelled through our time machine that one of children had made!  They were so engaged throughout the workshop, asked so many questions and recalled lots of information that was shared with them.  I look forward to applying our learning over the next few weeks!" Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School

Florence Nightingale - Legacies of the Lady with the Lamp

Florence Nightingale gained the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” whilst caring for soldiers injured in the Crimean War. And our Time Travel Tourist programmes give you the opportunity to mark the occasion by inviting her into your school, running workshops allowing children to explore her life, her work - and how the different approaches to nursing developed by both her and the Jamaican-born Mary Seacole changed the medical world forever. And as Florence is just one of the Tourists we can provide, you might also be interested in hosting the military strategist General Haig, the suffragette Emeline Pankhurst or the astronaut Neil Armstrong!

“The interactive performance was brilliant and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors were lovely and worked really hard during the day - Thank you!” Headteacher, Weston Primary School, Runcorn
“The children have learnt more from than this than from a thousand worksheets!" Assistant Headteacher, Holy Family Primary School

Homing in on the Home Front - WWI

Our uniquely interactive 75  minute Time Travel Theatre performance, Homing in on the Home Front, offers pupils opportunities to explore ways that the War touched on every aspect of life – from the food people ate to the clothes that they wore to the precautions they took against invasion.

The programme exists in a range of flexible formats, allowing up to 420 pupils to experience it in a single day! Classes in one-form entry schools will have opportunities to take part in follow-up workshops – while selected pupils in larger schools will have chances to engage in Question and Answer sessions with the actors.

Although they live in the countryside, Ed and Flo Duckworth are still in danger from the enemy planes that fly overhead. So they combine running their farm with “doing their bit” – Flo as an Air Raid Warden and Ed as a private in the local Home Guard. Join them and their friends Vera the Land Girl and Cyril the Spiv as they begin to get used to the huge changes in their lives – including the impending arrival of a couple of evacuees!

There’ll be laughs and tears, singing and dancing as your pupils join these larger than life characters to Make Do and Mend, Save Kitchen Scraps – and Dig for Victory. Not forgetting that Walls Have Ears, of course!

The programme is particularly suited to Keys Stages 2 and 3 / P4 - P7 – but Years 1 and 2 / P2-P3 will get a lot out of it, too. And we always welcome Reception classes / P1 for the first half hour or so!

Outcomes: greater knowledge of the causes and course of World War II; increased understanding of the concept of “total war”; heightened awareness of the roles played by class and gender during the period.

“All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and have been able to use this as a hook for their ‘Local Heroes’ History topic. We have been able to generate lots of discussion and high quality written work from the visit. They particularly enjoyed how engaging and practical the session was. It was a very enjoyable experience for not only the children, but the staff have found it very useful as it has helped with their planning." Banks Road Primary School
"Please can you pass on our thanks to “Neil Armstrong”, he was brilliant. The children got so much out of it and really enjoyed the session. He answered their questions so well and was very, very knowledgeable." Clarendon Infants

Historical Maths

These uniquely cross-curricular programmes see children using a range of age-differentiated mathematical skills to solve problems from the past – whilst at the same time learning a wealth of new historical content. Lasting 90 minutes upwards, they can all accommodate up to 30 pupils at a time. You can choose from …

The Viking’s Quest –a mixture of myth and maths from the North!

CSI: Ancient Greece – who lifted Zeus’s Lightning Bolt?

CSI: Saxons – was it really Alfred the Great who burnt the cakes?

“As part of our Maths week, all KS2 children in the School had the CSI:Maths workshop. The children were buzzing about it all week and realised that Maths can be fun! I would highly recommend it and would not hesitate to use you again in the future." Maths Teacher, St Benedict’s Primary

Exploring the World of Explorers KS1

From Leif Erikson to Neil Armstrong, and led by our modern day explorer, Major Tom, this workshop introduces KS1 /P1 - P3 pupils to some landmark people and moments in the history of global exploration. They’ll consider what it takes to be a great explorer (including remembering the need to respect other cultures), engage in drama activities unveiling some set-piece expeditions and complete beautifully illustrated Timelines to record and celebrate their learning.

“The students loved the workshops. Staff and pupil feedback was very positive. Children particularly loved the explorer statues that they were asked to make. By the time Chris and Zoe came in, the children already had a fairly good grounding in relation to their explorer. What was impressive though is that you had clearly done a lot of research because Chris and Zoe were able to teach them new things or make links to other aspects eg nationality. You've made a very positive impression and I am sure we will be inviting you back to St George's in some guise in the future." St George's Church of England Primary School
"The sessions were really hands-on and interactive and the children were always switched on. I feel they have learned a lot from the sessions and it will show in their upcoming history work. I know from discussions with the staff and pupils that it was an entirely enjoyable experience and you will be our first port of call for any future history topics.  Thank you very much." History Subject Leader, The Berkeley Primary School

1066 and all that: A History of Britain

Extending children’s learning beyond the national curriculum, while also exploring British values, this KS2 / P4 - P7 workshop sees pupils working in teams of Historical Ambassadors to teach each other about some of the important moments, both famous and infamous, of British History since the Battle of Hastings. Armed with enticingly designed Fact files, teams will explore moments from the Black Death to the Second World War, selecting key facts and preparing and presenting short dramas to bring them to life.  During the workshop, pupils will annotate our beautifully illustrated Timelines - which can either be taken home or used for displays.

Duration: Workshops last for 1-hour to half a day and preferably using the hall space.

"It was good to get the children problem solving and doing both mental and written calculations. They also gained lots of knowledge about the Vikings and lots of them have remembered the facts Jackson shared with them. It was great to see the children being creative. They usually associate maths with being boring and sitting down but getting them to make statues was amazing for them!" Holy Trinity Primary School

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm ready. how do i book a youth group visit.

Appointments are required for all groups visiting the Museum. To request an appointment at The Met Fifth Avenue or The Met Cloisters , please fill out the School Group Visit Request Form for K–12 school groups or the Camp and Community Youth Group Visit Request Form for summer camps and community youth organizations.

Do you have lunchroom facilities? May we eat in the cafeteria?

Unfortunately the Museum does not have indoor lunchroom facilities. Bag lunches can be stored while you are in the galleries, but please plan to eat outside or on the bus. We encourage groups visiting The Met Fifth Avenue to picnic in neighboring Central Park before or after your visit (weather permitting). Groups visiting The Met Cloisters are encouraged to picnic in surrounding Fort Tryon Park.

My group includes children with special needs. Should I use the online request form?

Yes. The Museum welcomes children of all abilities. When requesting your youth group visit, please let us know what accommodations we can provide in order to meet your needs. You can also reference a social narrative that prepares children on the autism spectrum for a guided visit.

We have a guided visit scheduled, but we have additional chaperones that want to attend. Is this okay?

Please notify us as soon as possible at [email protected] so that we can assess the feasibility of your request. We typically permit only three chaperones per assigned guide and may not be able to accommodate the additional adults. If this is the case, the additional adults are more than welcome to do a self-guided visit and meet up with the group afterward.

How do I reschedule or cancel a confirmed group appointment?

All requests to change or cancel existing appointments must be made via email to [email protected] . Please include your name, phone number, confirmation number, name of organization, and date and time of your visit. If you need to reschedule or cancel a guided visit, we kindly ask for as much advance notice as possible so that we can assign your guides to another group.

Do you have a place for buses or large vans to park at the Museum?

There is no school or charter bus parking in the vicinity of the Museum. We recommend referencing the New York City Department of Transportation website for bus layover locations.

The Met Fifth Avenue's parking garage can accommodate smaller vans. The clearance is six feet, six inches (6' 6"). Designated spaces are available in the parking garage for visitors with disabilities. Alternate arrangements can be made in advance for visitors with disabilities traveling in oversized vehicles. Please call 212-650-2010, between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

If we schedule a guided visit for a specific time, may we arrive earlier and look around on our own?

Due to the number of groups scheduled throughout the day, we ask that you arrive at your scheduled time. Your group is more than welcome to explore the rest of the Museum after your scheduled visit.

I have a guided visit scheduled and want to speak with the guides prior to the tour. Is this possible?

Yes, our guides will contact you seven to ten days prior to your visit to discuss your tour in more detail. They usually write to the email address you provided when you requested your visit, so be sure to check your email a week or so prior to your visit.

Can New York City schools book group visits during the summer?

Yes, NYC school groups are welcome to visit during the summer. All fees are waived for verified summer school programs and District 75 schools. Summer enrichment programs and summer camps that operate out of NYC schools are subject to  Camp and Community Groups  rates.

Does the Museum offer school partnerships? I'd like my students to experience more than a one-time visit.

Yes, the Museum offers a range of school partnerships! A limited number of free mini residencies, which consist of two in-school programs and one Museum tour, are available for New York City Title I and District 75 schools. The Met also works with schools to co-develop a limited number of customized and long-term partnerships consisting of programs at the Museum, in-school, or a combination of both. Please contact 212-570-3985 or [email protected] for more information.

How should I prepare for my youth group visit?

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Met before bringing your group to the Museum. There are a range of resources for you, including:

  • Lesson Plans Search for lesson plans with keywords, or sort them by age, subject area, collection area, and theme.
  • Curriculum Resources These comprehensive and fully illustrated guides provide useful background information and ideas for engaging children.

Why it’s important to take students to historical sites

Share this:

School visits to historical sites in the UK are becoming increasingly important to teachers like me who want to bring history lessons to life for the class, and enable pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the people and places that have shaped society today.

Castles, palaces, abbeys, country houses and other historical locations in the UK are now catering for school visits and offer a variety of experiences to bring history alive for the student, at every level of their education.

Visits to sites where the things we learn about in history actually happened can serve as a catalyst for sparking children’s imagination and showing them a world beyond the classroom. A school visit to a historical site can put what I teach in the classroom into context, and many sites offer interactive, hands-on and immersive experiences specifically designed to meet the needs of different groups across the key stages.

For example, over the last couple of years, I have visited several of the Historical Royal Palaces sites with our secondary school students. Our students come from North London but often do not have the opportunity such places outside of school.

Most recently, we visited the Tower of London twice with Year 7, which tied into our scheme of work for Key Stage 3, and Banqueting House with sixth formers and Years 8 and 9.

A popular choice

The visits are incredibly cost effective and link really clearly to what we teach in school. With the Tower of London visits, we split the students into groups and gave them tasks to complete whilst they explored the site. Girls and boys alike absolutely loved learning about the dungeons, torture weapons and famous inmates, as well as the crown jewels. History is a very popular subject at our school; the fact that we can offer students the chance to experience history where it actually happened has been undeniably invaluable.

Not only do the visits help with the students’ overall enjoyment and deeper understanding of the subject, they also encourage them to realise there are a lot of other historical sites in London they can visit for their education, like galleries and museums.

The staff at the Tower of London in particular were fantastic with the students during our visits. They really focused on engaging with them, picking up on what interested them and developing that knowledge with them – they weren’t intimidated by a large bunch of young people, instead they helped them investigate and explore. The students talked about their visit the next day; they really enjoyed it and we tasked them with producing presentations and write-ups of their experience.

A new perspective

The trips to Banqueting House were also very memorable. We took two groups of A level students, aged 16-18, there. The new A-Level states that 50% of history that is taught should be British History, and I am teaching the Stuarts, so I felt that Banqueting House would be the perfect setting to develop their learning about this period in history.

During our visit, the students engaged with a costumed interpreter who was dressed as Charles I which worked really well – the young people got really into it and were able to draw on their knowledge as well as the resources provided to ask him relevant questions, which he answered in character. A highlight was when he delivered his execution speech to the students before leaving the throne room; they were stunned into silence!

Interestingly, the Stuarts visit at Banqueting House changed the way I teach the subject; I definitely saw Charles I as more of a rounded character following our experience, whereas before, I had been tending to paint him in a mostly negative light.

School visits to historical sites are amazing for developing the students’ interest in history as well as their knowledge, and I would highly recommend them to any teacher considering ways to improve delivery of the subject.

History school trips – Help pupils develop a greater understanding of chronology

History school trips destination Stonehenge

Use a history school trip to explain to pupils how historical events link together

Helen Kerry

Whether taught at school, presented on a TV documentary or noted in a history book, most of us are aware of history’s key moments and we know who the main protagonists are. You know, “1066 and all that”.

Understanding how life was different thousands of years ago can be relatively easy for our students to grasp – handling objects at Stonehenge to get under the skin of Neolithic life, for example, can help transport students back.

Finding continuity, or things that are directly relatable, however, can be more challenging for them.

Bring learning history to life

Appreciating how events link together throughout history, and then considering our place within it, is beneficial from both an academic and wellbeing perspective.

“If we can find these links,” says Katie Thoburn, learning manager at English Heritage, “it brings learning history to life. And this is where educational school trips can have a real impact. They help make the past much more relatable, tangible and assist school children in developing a much deeper understanding of period and chronology.”

Why history school trips are hugely beneficial

There’s nothing quite like standing in the places where history happened. Spending time in places where people lived, breathed, worked and fought can be hugely beneficial for students in understanding key moments in history in a way that transcends text books.

Pupils have a chance to interact with each other and their teachers in a new way, sparking conversation and debate.

Bea Honap-Baker, teacher of history and politics, sums it up, saying: “Students ask probing questions, get excited about learning new facts, and they enjoy learning about different perspectives about the past.”

Understanding our place within history, too, can be massively beneficial for our wellbeing.

Historic England has reported how heritage can help “improve personal wellbeing, by helping us understand our past, our individual and communal identity and help us connect with the places where we live.”

Bea adds, “Importantly for us, it has allowed us to really connect with local history and has given us so many chances to develop our students’ cultural capital.”

Providing experiences via a school history trip

History school trips also widen a student’s horizons, reinforce their cultural rights and their right to participate in the culture of their community.

Providing these experiences means they feel confident visiting as an adult – they feel welcome and like they belong in these settings.

Passing of time

It might be that you want to use a visit to a site to go into detail on a particular moment in time, like Neolithic life at Stonehenge, or you may want to use an educational trip to help students understand progress throughout history and the passing of time, as you can at sites such as Dover and Portchester.

Either way, there are a wealth of historical sites throughout the country that can address both of these challenges.

While some heritage sites offer expert-led tours at a small cost, there are also opportunities for you to organise your own free, self-led visit at many locations.

The prospect of organising one of these may bring you out in some sort of stress-induced rash, with risk assessments, permission slips and coach travel admin to arrange.

However, venues are generally more than happy to help with your planning and can point you in the direction of what you need to know. Once you’re out of the classroom, it’s well worth the effort.

Explore the breadth and depth of the curriculum

Taking the opportunity to get out of the classroom is enormously helpful for both you and your students, giving you the chance to explore both breadth and depth elements of the history curriculum.

It also allows both you and your class to approach a topic from a new perspective.

A school visit is often the first and only time a child will visit a heritage site, even if it’s to a very local place. Their excitement and joy at being out of the classroom visiting somewhere different is infectious.

Self-lead a school tour like an expert

As well as being low cost, leading an historical school trip yourself means you can choose to explore the topics, or even elements of topics, that are of particular interest to your class.

History school trips can be tailor-made according to your group’s needs and you can spend as much or as little time as you need on the site.

Narrow your focus. When browsing school trip ideas , consider the topic you want to cover and how a visit to the site will benefit your students and their understanding of it. What parts do you want to go to and what can you do there?

Do a pre-visit . If you can, take up the opportunity to go on a free planning visit ahead of history school trips. This way you can get all the logistical worries out of the way, as well as being inspired before the main event by the wide range of opportunities available at your venue.

Ask about resources. There are often free resources or handling collections available for schools to use – just make sure you book them in advance. At English Heritage we provide these at many of our sites and they always go down really well.

Sort out logistics. Venues can often help with risk assessments and hazard information, taking the hassle out of planning your day. Before you go, find out who your point of contact is for the day, where the toilets are, where you can have lunch and where you can store your bags and coats.

Get back-up. Find out if there will be any staff or volunteers around to help on the day who can provide additional information or insight during your trip.

Victorian Visits for Schools

Schoolteacher session.

Pupils are given a Victorian penny to pay their rather formidable Victorian School Mistress or School Master in the morning and then use authentically made slate boards and dip pens to engage in real Victorian lessons.

After an exhausting drill(!), a specially planned playtime is incorporated into the morning when children are encouraged to play with a range of authentically reproduced and some antique Victorian toys.

history school visits

Children are allowed to use the playground basket of toys if they behave well!

Children use a range of resources including a class set of slate boards and quill pens and ink.

history school visits

Parlour Games

Parlour games with the lady.

Then, in the afternoon, children learn all about what it might be like when they return from school to their Victorian home.  Lady Lisa’s butler, Poyser is otherwise engaged so pupils are expected to help the Victorian lady by laying her table properly for dinner and are then rewarded with parlour games and gossip over tea.

Meanwhile, her butler, Poyser oversees groups using a selection of Victorian antique artefacts to engage in an array of household tasks including washing linen napkins, using a posher; drying them using a mangle; pegging them up on a line with wooden pegs etc.

history school visits

Pastimes, Toys & Games

High quality, reproduction and original toys are presented to the children in traditional wicker baskets for them to play with and discover the various mechanisms.

Additionally, each small group has a larger or special toy to engage with, such as bagatelle, shove ha’penny and a zoetrope.  The baskets of toys carousel around the groups until all have been seen, when the class gather for a plenary.

Storytelling

history school visits

The day usually ends with groups coming together for storytelling from the lady, who is altogether more sympathetic than the School Ma’am!

Resources and costumes for this day (as with all of the Specialists’ work) are researched to a high level and are mainly of museum grade.  Many objects for this session are real antiques.  Our research shows that one of our parlour games is of local origin, being played specifically in the East Midlands in Victorian times.

We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role as Victorians.  This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions and talk as they would do.  To achieve this we use an antiquated pattern of speech to lend a realistic feel to our words whilst remaining clear enough for children to understand.  The overall experience for children is then an immersive one where they feel they have truly met a Victorian and gained a picture of Victorian times. The sessions are interactive and involve all of the children.

The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request.  Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .

History School Trip Ideas

History is one of the most valuable areas of the curriculum, in which students can explore the past and discover what has created the world we live in today. One of the great things about history is its diversity, allowing pupils to pursue specific areas that particularly interest them.

Here at UK School Trips, we have a School Trip for whatever period of history your class is studying, whether it be the Second World War or the Vikings. We also ensure that we only provide the best venues that are available, guaranteeing that your class will have an enjoyable and highly educational School Trip experience.

By visiting a Historic School Trip destination, students will be able to develop their understanding in a way that is impossible in the classroom. Seeing sites and objects firsthand allows students to truly think about the past and understand the reality of the situation.

From historic museums to immersive workshops, we have something to suit every school. Students will even be given the chance to handle valuable artefacts, transporting them back into the past and allowing them to further their understanding on the subject.

We are honored to have some of the best historic destinations that the country has to offer. Whether it be the Imperial War Museum Group, Warwick Castle, National Slate Museum Wales, Golden Hinde, Jorvik Viking Museums and The Edinburgh Dungeon these venues will fail to disappoint, providing both students and teachers with memories that will last a lifetime.

There are plenty of other great places to consider that are slightly less thought of but are equally as momentous. Depending on your requirements and the key stage of your group, our expert team will be able to create you a bespoke trip that will certainly be remembered by all. The world is your history classroom

If you were to throw a dart at a map of Europe and decide to take a school tour to that country, the one thing you could study and guarantee finding value in would be its history. Our most popular European school trips for history students include the D-Day landing beaches of Normandy and the WW1 battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium. Further east, Berlin and Auschwitz offer an important insight into WW2 and the Holocaust.

We've seen a growing trend of schools taking history trips further afield and our most popular long-haul history destinations are Vietnam, Washington and New York.

What ever era or topic your class is studying, we can help bring it to life with a bespoke history trip. Talk to one of our country experts to organise a tailored itinerary to match your teaching objectives.

Do your bit for nature

Biodiversity is connected to almost every aspect of our lives, but it needs our help. Small actions can make a big difference.

The school from ‘Footloose’ lobbied Kevin Bacon to visit. He delivered.

Kevin Bacon returned to Payson High School in Utah decades after he filmed the 1984 classic, following a student campaign ahead of the school’s demolition.

history school visits

In his mid-20s, Kevin Bacon walked through the halls of Payson High School in the 1984 film “Footloose.” Last month, Bacon, now 65, traversed those halls for the first time in 40 years and revisited his locker used in the film.

“I think it was unexpectedly profound in a weird kind of way,” Bacon said in a phone interview.

Bacon’s return to Payson High, in Payson, Utah, was the culmination of a campaign to bring him back to the school before it is torn down next year.

Much of the film, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in February, was shot at the school. Residents and students take pride in the film, and Bacon still has fond memories of the movie.

Those memories came rushing back as a crowd greeted Bacon when he stepped onto an outdoor stage at Payson High on April 20, the day of the school’s spring prom.

“You were all just tireless, unrelenting in your desire to have me return and you talked me into it,” Bacon told the crowd. “It’s amazing, the power that this movie has to bring people together.”

The school’s campaign for Bacon’s return included re-creations of the film’s opening dance in TikTok posts last year, a “Footloose”-themed musical in November and fundraisers for Bacon’s nonprofit group, SixDegrees.org .

In May 2025, the school will move to a new campus, which is under construction, and demolition of the current building will begin the following month. A few valued items, such as Bacon’s locker, will move to the new location.

‘All of our dreams came true’

Though Payson students, including student body president Rubie Raff, had long lobbied for Bacon to return — and, if possible, attend the spring prom — his visit still took them by surprise.

“It was surreal,” Raff, 18, said. “As soon as he started walking onstage and they played the ‘Footloose’ song, I started crying. I was so happy that this finally happened and all of our dreams came true in that moment. It was indescribable.”

Jenny Staheli, a Payson English teacher and student council adviser, said the school presented Bacon with two letterman jackets, with his name and the SixDegrees logo on the front and “Footloose 1984” on the back. One was for Bacon to keep; the other, which Bacon signed, will be placed in a display with the locker once the new school is built.

Staheli said a highlight of the visit was when Bacon signed her husband’s Laserdisc copy of the 1992 film “Singles,” which stars Bacon’s wife, Kyra Sedgwick.

“He saw something in this campaign and the work that these kids put in that was worthwhile,” Staheli, 50, said. “Acknowledging that and taking time out of his schedule to visit us speaks to his character. Watching these kids accomplish this is the dream of every teacher.”

Raff said Bacon told her and other student council members that he admired their commitment, particularly their work with his nonprofit, which distributes kits to low-income people that include toiletries, socks and nonperishable goods.

“This idea was originally just to get Kevin Bacon here,” Raff said, “but it turned into something much bigger by impacting other people’s lives.”

Staheli and the student council learned in January that Bacon would be coming. They kept the news a secret as Staheli worked with Bacon’s representatives to plan a grand announcement.

Payson Principal Jesse Sorenson announced on the school’s Instagram account that 600 people needed to gather in the school’s gym at 5 a.m. on March 22. Ultimately, Staheli said, around 1,300 people came, including community members.

Bacon, who was in Atlanta at the time filming the upcoming TV series “The Bondsman,” appeared via live video.

“The movie and Payson High School was a big part of my life and I’ve been amazed at the work that all of you have been putting into this with the musical and the flash mobs and the re-creations,” Bacon told the crowd. “It hasn’t gone unnoticed by me.”

Bacon called the school’s work with SixDegrees.org “inspirational” and, after a pause, delivered the news that students hoped to hear: “I’m gonna come. I gotta come.”

The gym erupted in cheers.

Nick Dansie, Payson’s senior class president, said it was rewarding to know that Bacon followed the campaign’s work that paid off in his visit.

“We’d been up so early and the day just lasted forever,” Dansie, 19, said. “It just felt like a party day after that. Everybody wanted to be a part of the prom of the year.”

Bacon said he was “tickled” by the reaction and called the students who gave him a tour “inspiring and passionate.”

“The fact that people maybe two generations later appreciate the movie and find something they can relate to is really staggering,” Bacon said. “There was a kid who said, ‘My grandfather was here when you were doing the movie!’ I was like ‘Whoa, your grandfather?’”

‘It seemed impossible’

In the film, Bacon plays Chicago teenager Ren McCormack, who moves to the fictional town of Bomont, set in Payson, about an hour south of Salt Lake City. Many residents look down on dancing, and the students challenge the town’s strict morals. The film culminates in a prom that Ren puts together for the high school students.

Bacon didn’t attend this year’s prom, but he visited earlier in the day, and he also shared a video message that was played during the prom. “I want you all to have a great time, and most importantly, be good to each other,” he told the students. “And don’t forget to cut loose.” The DJ then played the film’s final dance number as students did the dance from its climactic scene.

Student say they’ll remember Bacon’s visit long after graduating.

“It’s something we’ll tell our kids in 20 or 50 years from now,” Dansie said. “Being able to say we got Kevin Bacon to come back is pretty cool.”

Raff called the campaign’s work a “game changer” for the school and said it instilled in students the confidence that they can accomplish something big.

“I was so proud that we finally pulled it off,” Raff said. “There was a lot of relief. Even though it seemed impossible, it came together in the best way. It made everything worthwhile.”

Preparations underway for Liberty University’s 51st Commencement

May 8, 2024 : By Office of Communications & Public Engagement

history school visits

Liberty University is gearing up for its 51st Commencement — projected to be one of its largest in its history — with ceremonies running from Thursday through Saturday. Approximately 10,800 graduates have registered to participate in degree ceremonies, and the university estimates about 60,000 graduates, family, and friends will flock to Liberty Mountain over the three-day period.

Last week, crews began setting up the stage and field seats in Williams Stadium for the Commencement Main Ceremony, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and featuring U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as keynote speaker. Staff from Liberty’s Emergency Management and Community Engagement Office and Grounds Department have been setting up barricades around campus to help with traffic and create safe pedestrian walkways for the events. On Monday morning, the Registrar’s Office kicked off the week with a large planning session for the staff responsible for running all the events.

history school visits

More than 29,000* degrees will be conferred at 28 individual degree presentation ceremonies set for 2 and 6 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. All degree ceremonies and the main ceremony will be streamed live from the  Commencement website .

The university will hold its annual Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Thomas Road Baptist Church. The ceremony honors all service members, veterans, and military spouses who have completed their degree during the 2023-24 academic year. In addition, Liberty will hold two commissioning ceremonies for Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC on Saturday.

Visitors can download a Weekend Guide to the Commencement activities and are encouraged to download the Champion Safe App (on Apple Store or Google Play ) for up-to-date information on activities and safety alerts throughout Commencement. Updates and FAQs are also available on the Commencement website and Facebook page . Additionally, information booths will set up at Williams Stadium, the Vines Center/Liberty Arena, Thomas Road Baptist Church, and the Liberty Multipurpose Center.

“It definitely can be challenging with the large numbers on campus, but I love how I’ve heard President (Dondi) Costin refer to Commencement as our Super Bowl,” said Lori Baker, Liberty’s Senior Associate Registrar for Student Services & Records and Program Manager for Commencement. “It’s our big time to celebrate why we’re here, and for our graduates it’s about celebrating that they’re finishing a major goal and moving along the path to their dreams.”

history school visits

Returning this year is the Graduate Reception, set for Friday from 1-3 p.m. on the Academic Lawn. The event will be a time for graduates to meet and greet faculty, visit with students and professors from other departments, and enjoy light refreshments and fellowship with their classmates.

“We want to give our graduates more opportunities to connect with the faculty in their program during Commencement,” Baker said. “We anticipate this will be a very highly attended event.”

Tents will be set up for each school and for various campus departments, such as the Alumni Relations Office and Flames Club.

With a large majority of the graduates (more than 24,000) having earned their degrees through  Liberty University Online Programs , Baker estimates that 75 percent of the graduates attending Commencement will be visiting campus for the first time.

“This is such a great opportunity for our university and our community to show off our campus and everything it has to offer,” she said. “It’s very exciting to see a lot of these graduates and guests on campus because they are just happy to be here, see campus, and meet people face-to-face who have worked with them over the course of their time with Liberty. We want them to have a great experience while they are here.”

While on campus, guests are encouraged to take a campus tour (start at the Hancock Welcome Center), the Legacy of Faith Historic Walk around campus, and visit Lynchburg’s tallest landmark, the Freedom Tower. For those arriving early, Liberty Baseball  will be hosting Virginia Tech tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m.

Commencement festivities officially begin today (Wednesday) with a Commencement Welcome Fair from 1-5 p.m. in the Montview Alumni Ballroom, where graduates can pick up their honor or military cords, reader cards, purchase a T-shirt, and have formal regalia photos taken. The fair will continue on Thursday and Friday as graduates arrive to campus.

For the Main Ceremony, gates at William Stadium will open at 3 p.m. Friday. Metal detectors will be at all gates, and Liberty’s  clear bag policy  will be in effect.

The university has announced several road closures throughout the events. Guests should anticipate heavy traffic on Friday leading up to the Main Ceremony and between degree presentation ceremonies on Thursday and Saturday. Parking and shuttle services will be available at multiple campus locations throughout Commencement.

Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils land highest-ranked recruit in school history

A fter a disappointing 14-18 season, the Arizona State Sun Devils and head coach Bobby Hurley have been hard at work trying to replenish a roster that lost seven players to the transfer portal, including guards Frankie Collins and Jamiya Neal.

On Monday, they added the highest-ranked recruit in school history with five-star center Jayden Quaintance announcing his commitment after getting his release from his National Letter of Intent from the University of Kentucky.

At 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, Quaintance is the second-best center in the 2024 class and is still only 16 years old, which makes him ineligible for the 2025 NBA Draft.

He will spend at least two years in college, which is a big boost for the Sun Devils, who hope to get back to their winning ways.

Quaintance made his official visit to Arizona State on April 26 and committed just three days later.

"We went out on the visit and it was right. Arizona State has a former teammate of Jayden's from Dream City Christian where he played as a freshman and Jayden is really familiar with the state of Arizona, so it all just worked out," Quaintance's father said in an interview with 247Sports .

Quaintance wasn't the only good news the Sun Devils received on Monday, as guard Adam Miller is reportedly using his additional year of eligibility and will return to Arizona State.

Quaintance and Miller will be joined by transfer guards BJ Freeman, Austin Nunez, Alston Miller and forward Basheer Jihad.

Four-star high school recruit forwards Amier Ali and Sammie Yeanay and three-star forward Jaden Smith and guard Bo Aldridge round out a loaded 2024 class as the Sun Devils enter their first season in the Big 12 conference.

With Hurley exploring ways to bring visibility to the men's basketball program , 2024 has a chance to be a special season for the Sun Devils after finishing with losing records in three of the last four years.
