Try Behind The Scenes Tour!
We visited the Denver Zoo & did a behind the scenes tour to see how they take care of the tigers. We learned a lot & got to see the beautiful Nikita up close. You do not get to touch the tiger, but you can feed her a treat thru the fence. You learn about their personalities, how they come to be at the zoo. It had snowed the day before so a lot of the animals were not out. The inside exhibits were interesting although some did not have animals. The coffee shop was great, friendly service.
Loved the peacocks around the zoo! It was also fun to participate in a giraffe feeding and well worth the money (there are many interactive activities that are not too expensive but completely worth it)! Lots of the animals were out in the afternoon! It was a little hot though to prepare for that and lots of walking in this LARGE zoo.
So many cool things to see at the Denver Zoo. We love the way they keep trying to update the exhibits to make it the best experience possible. There is truly something for everyone so what are you waiting for? Your turn to check out one of the best zoo's in the nation.
Should have known not to go on a Friday but we still did. The animals were cool and there was a lot of information but too many kids.
We visited on a cold, rainy Tuesday morning right when they opened. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see too many animals. I think maybe had it been a little later in the day more would have been out in their enclosures, but it’s hard to say. Also, the few animals we saw seemed a little stressed.
The Denver Zoo is always relevant and upgrades as often as possible. Many great new exhibits and lots of animal fun for little kids, medium sized kids, parents and grandparents. This a fair weather favorite all year around, and we highly recommend this Zoo to others! A membership is recommended as you save money in the long run when you visit a lot, and the Zoo can count on your $$ as income for their own needs.

About Denver Zoo : At 126 years old, Denver Zoo is one of the oldest and most visited public institutions in Colorado, welcoming more than 1.4 million visitors annually. The experience for both visitor and animal has transformed dramatically over the course of its history. In the last century, Denver Zoo has created award-winning animal habitats, designed to optimize animal health and wellbeing, along with a state-of-the-art animal hospital. The campus is also representative of Denver’s architectural history, as the grounds feature 100 buildings of various styles, from Victorian to contemporary. With over 3,000 wild animals to house, feed and care for, the buildings are not only aesthetically pleasing, but contain highly complex operating systems to keep animals healthy and comfortable.
About the tour guide: Bert Vescolani , President and CEO, Denver Zoo, is a marine biologist and educator by training. His encyclopedic knowledge of animals’ needs is key to his leadership, not only for planning new exhibits, but for maintaining all exhibits, some decades old. A passionate advocate for optimizing the guest experience while ensuring that animals thrive, Bert oversees all Denver Zoo operations, including the planning and construction of over $50 million in new habitats and improvements currently underway at Denver Zoo. An engaging wildlife advocate and institutional leader, Bert has led zoo, science and aquarium teams for more than 20 years, with leadership roles at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium and Saint Louis Science Center. He joined Denver Zoo in 2018.
Please note: While Denver Zoo is a beloved family destination, the content of this tour has been developed with adults in mind. Due to Denver Zoo safety protocols, no attendee on this tour may be under the age of 9.

What is Denver Zoo?
Denver Zoo is a cherished gem nestled in the heart of Denver, Colorado, known for its commitment to animal care, education, and conservation. It's a place where you can admire wildlife from around the globe and learn about the natural world while taking in the thoughtful displays and habitats designed to mimic the animals' natural environments as closely as possible. With over 3,000 animals representing 450 species, there's an adventure around every corner.

This isn’t just any ordinary zoo; it's a living ecosystem that supports a diverse range of species, and every visit can offer a new experience. I have wandered these paths countless times, witnessing the transformation of the Denver Zoo from a simple menagerie to an institution that prides itself on innovative, educational, and conservation programs. You're not just visiting a zoo; you're stepping into a world dedicated to the wellbeing of its inhabitants, each enclosure sparking a greater appreciation for the creatures we share our planet with.
History of Denver Zoo
The origins of Denver Zoo trace back to the late 19th century when it all started with one orphaned black bear named Billy Bryan. The zoo officially opened its gates in 1896, making it one of the oldest zoos in the United States. Over the years, I've heard stories passed down through generations about how this zoo has grown and adapted through times of hardship and prosperity, becoming a leader in animal care and public education.
Significant milestones include the construction of Bear Mountain, one of the first naturalistic habitats in North America, and enormous efforts towards sustainability and energy efficiency. For instance, the Toyota Elephant Passage uses a biomass gasification system, something few know about, proving Denver Zoo's commitment to being a steward of the environment. And, with every visit, I can't help but reflect on how it's a living piece of history that continues to evolve and educate.
Why is Denver Zoo Important?
Denver Zoo holds an essential place in the community. It's a conservation powerhouse, working tirelessly to protect endangered species, both locally and globally. The zoo isn't just a place to see animals; it's a hub for education and conservation action. Families and school groups flock here not only to marvel at the animals but to absorb the impactful conservation messages interwoven throughout the exhibits.
I like to remind people that the Zoo is also spearheading several science-driven field projects, focusing on species like the black rhinoceros and the Mongolian wild horse. Supporting Denver Zoo thus contributes to these vital efforts to save animals from extinction. The Zoo’s role in fostering connections between humans and wildlife cannot be overstated—it inspires us to learn more and to care more.
Things to Do & See at Denver Zoo
There's no shortage of experiences at Denver Zoo! You can enjoy up-close animal encounters, where you might find yourself feeding a giraffe or watching an elephant painting session. Truth be told, one of my favorite hidden secrets is the Lorikeet Adventure, where colorful birds may land on your shoulder if you're patient.

The zoo offers behind-the-scenes tours that provide an in-depth look at animal care and the complex operations required to maintain a facility of this calibre. For young explorers, the Zoo Lights during the holiday season is a breathtaking display, transforming the zoo into a luminous wonderland. The Predator Ridge recreates an African savanna, which is a standout exhibit – particularly when the lions become vocal.
- Feed the Lorikeets: Dip into nectar and have these vibrant birds flock to you.

- Predator Ridge: Experience the roar of lions and the cunning of spotted hyenas.
- Toyota Elephant Passage: See these majestic creatures like never before in one of the most extensive habitats.
- Up-Close Animal Encounters: Make a personal connection with animals and learn from their keepers.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned patron, every trip to the Denver Zoo is unique and promises fresh discoveries. Remember to check the daily schedule for feedings and talks – those can offer an eye-opening perspective on the animals’ personalities and the care they receive here.

Guided Tour Topics
What is an Animal (K-2 grades)

A Phoenix Zoo instructor leads students on a tour of the zoo’s Children’s Trail, highlighting the characteristics of living and non-living, and the characteristics of animals and plants. The instructor challenges students, through inquiry, to improve their observation and critical thinking skills.

A Phoenix Zoo instructor leads the tour of the Zoo’s Children’s Trail, classifying rainforest vertebrate species. The instructor challenges participants with interactives and inquiry to improve their observation and critical thinking skills.
Desert Discoveries: Exploring Arizona (3-5 grades)
Food, water and shelter are hard to find in the Sonoran Desert. Avoiding predators and scorching temperatures are just some of the challenges living organisms must face. Through the Exploring Arizona Guided Tour, participants explore and learn about several desert animals along the Phoenix Zoo’s Arizona Trail by comparing and contrasting their habitats and adaptations. Utilizing manipulatives, a Zoo instructor will guide small discussion groups to uncover how various Arizona animals survive in the harsh extremes of our local ecosystem.
Desert Lives: Exploring AZ Native Plants & Animals (6-8 grades)
Food, water and shelter are hard to find in the desert. Avoiding predators and scorching temperatures are also the challenges desert plants and animals must face. In Arizona, there are four deserts, each one unique and presenting different trials. Through the Exploring Arizona Guided Tour, participants explore and learn about several desert animals along the Phoenix Zoo’s Arizona Trail by comparing and contrasting their habitats and adaptations. A Zoo instructor will guide discussion groups to uncover how various Arizona animals survive in the harsh extremes of our state deserts.
Dynamic Deserts: Exploring Desert Conservation (9-12 grades)
Conservation in the desert requires a unique understanding and perspective of one of nature’s harshest, and often misunderstood, biomes. With scarce resources and fierce competition, life in the desert has adapted creative techniques for survival. During this tour, a Zoo instructor will lead participants on the Arizona Trail while exploring different adaptations from our resident plants and animals, and the impact humans play on this surprisingly rich and diverse ecosystem.
More Than a Zookeeper (10-12 grades)
How many people does it take to run a zoo? There’s a lot of work going on every day at the Phoenix Zoo that many never even notice. Throughout the More Than a Zookeeper Guided Tour, participants will view the zoo from a different perspective. A zoo instructor will lead the group in discussions and an activity, while exploring some of the jobs necessary to run a successful zoo and conservation program. Participants will discover the importance of the Phoenix Zoo’s role in conservation while uncovering STEM career opportunities along the way.
Enriching Experiences: Exploring Behavioral Enrichment (K-12)
Movies, music and video games provide us with hours of entertainment, but what does a zoo do to keep a monkey from getting bored or a zebra from being stressed? Behavioral Enrichment! By providing mental and physical stimulation through naturalistic settings and environmental enhancements, managed setting animals’ lives are greatly improved. The benefits include increased natural behaviors and healthy, stress-free individuals. The Enriching Experiences Guided Tour provides participants with the opportunity to explore and learn about different types of behavioral enrichment used by the Phoenix Zoo through comparing a variety of exhibits and species. Utilizing manipulatives, a Zoo instructor will facilitate observations and discussions to discover some of the intricacies involved in the behavioral management of managed setting animals — making life more stimulating for the Zoo’s animals and guests alike!
