Dodge Journey P0306: Misfire Detected (Cylinder 6)

P0306 is a fairly common trouble code with the Dodge Journey . It’s and OBD2 code and stands for:

P0306 is certainly a cause for concern, and should be considered a threat to the drivability your Journey. The nice thing about P0306 is that it’s a cylinder specific trouble code, which makes diagnosing the problems much more simple than P0300 , which means that the cylinders are randomly misfiring.

It will often be accompanied by codes P0301 , P0302 , P0303 , P0304 , P0305, etc…. These particular codes indicate that there is a misfire in cylinder one, two, three, four, and five respectively.

Fixing P0306 should be considered a high priority. Unlike a lot of the OBDII codes, this code has to do directly with engine combustion. It also can cost money to ignore it, since driving with a misfire can damage the Journey’s catalytic converter. The engine is also not firing all of the fuel, so raw fuel is also passing through Cylinder 6 into the exhaust. Mileage may suffer as well when your Journey has P0306 as well.

Dodge Journey P0306 Definition

P0306 is a cylinder specific misfire code, which means that Cylinder 6 is misfiring and causing it. An important thing to understand when finding the location of Cylinder 6 is that it’s going to be the sixth cylinder in the firing order . It won’t be the sixth cylinder that you might see when looking at the engine.

Journey P0306 OBDII Code Symptoms

• The P0306 trouble code will trigger the Journey’s service engine soon light.
• The vehicle itself may begin to run rough. It depends on how serious the misfire is.
• The vehicle may produce excess vibration, especially at lower RPM.
• Fuel mileage may suffer.
• You may smell raw gas coming from the tailpipe.
• The Journey may backfire.

P0306 Trouble Code Diagnosis- Dodge Journey

There are quite a few things that can cause the P0306 trouble code to trigger the Dodge Journey. Here are the most common problems that may cause it. They are presented somewhat in order from most to least likely to be causing the code:

• Bad Spark Plugs – Spark plugs are one of the most common causes of P0306. Take a look at the electrodes and see if they are in good shape. Most vehicles now come with iridium plugs that need changed very infrequently. That being said, the plugs are a great place to start. Here’s a great video on how to see if a spark plug is bad. • Spark Plug Wires – On most modern engines, the plug wires are not nearly as long as they once were, but they can still go bad. Here’s how to tell if your plug wires are bad (video).
• Coil Packs – Coil packs rarely go bad, but when they do, they can certainly cause P0306 in your Dodge Journey. Replacing a set can be very expensive. Here’s how to test them .
• Bad Fuel Injector – If you have a fuel injector that has gone bad, it won’t be able to properly atomize the fuel and you’ll get the P0306. Here’s a good video on how to diagnose an injector , it can be a little tricky. This is definitely not the place to start.
• Vacuum leak – If your Journey has a vacuum leak, it can be very difficult for it to get the right air/fuel mixture. This will cause the cylinders to misfire and it’ll throw the P0306 if the leak is around that specific cylinder on the intake manifold. It’s easy (and kind of fun) to chase one down. • Cam or Crank Sensors – This one is very unlikely, but it does happen. If the ECU is not getting the right signal from these sensors, the vehicles timing is not going to sync up and it’ll misfire.
• Low Compression – If you have a leaking head gasket, bent valve, cracked head, etc.. that would cause compression to not be as high as it should, you’re going to get P0306. You should also feel the vehicle is down on power as well.

Most Common P0306 Fixes

If you follow the items listed above you should be able to fix the P0306. Here’s how to go about it:

Inspect and test the parts of the ignition system around the cylinder to determine whether or not you need to replace the coil packs, plugs, or wires. Most of the time one of those three things will end up being the problem.

You need to reset the trouble codes and swap the coil pack, wire, and plug from Cylinder 6 to another cylinder. If you get a different P030X code, you’ll know that one of those three components is bad, since by moving those components you have changed which cylinder the trouble code has registered in. After that, Go ahead and replace them or have them tested. It’s an easy, and cheap method of determining if your ignition components have gone bad.

After that you would want to test the fuel injection system. There are links above that’ll show you how to do that. If that doesn’t work, it may be time to do a compression test and see if you have a leak in the sixth cylinder.

Is P0306 a Serious Concern?

P0306 is cause for concern and left unfixed can leave you stranded or make the vehicle virtually un-drivable. Fixing the problem causing the code to fire can save you time and money and keep your Dodge Journey from breaking down. Quick action may also save your catalytic converter from going bad. Introduced nearly a decade ago, the aging mid-size Journey has survived this long thanks to its affordability and practicality, but it’s decidedly lacking in the latest technology and safety equipment. Despite the availability of five trim packages, the choice of inline-four and V-6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive, and five- or seven-passenger seating, the Journey is just not truly competitive with the best family crossovers. It’s only worth considering if there’s a steep discount working in your favor.

What's New for 2017?

Not much. Other than a few new paint colors, the Journey’s biggest update this year was the renaming of its top trim level from R/T to GT.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission that’s best avoided. We can confidently say that its 173 horsepower isn't enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model is slower than most rivals. The bigger engine is punchy enough for everyday driving, but its six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow on the uptake when you request more power, hampering the Journey’s responsiveness. Front-wheel drive is standard with either engine; all-wheel drive is optional on the V-6 and not available with the inline-four. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling leaves it wallowing in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of its soft suspension, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, and fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially egregious in higher-trim Journeys. Several luxury features, including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system, with its larger screen, incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup has a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. We’d choose the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, which has much larger touch zones and more available features, including optional navigation, voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a a single USB port up front.

DCF Moscow: Interview experience & advice

Hi everyone,

I posted a detailed review in the Consulate reviews section, so if you're interested you can read it here .

I had no problem getting into the Embassy because we called and emailed beforehand to make sure my name was on the list. If you are the petitioner and are planning to accompany your spouse, definitely do this as it'll just be one less bit of stress for you in this process. Indeed, they had a separate list and I saw my name there, so they check these kinds of things.

There were A LOT of people there, a huge line outside the Embassy, but it moved very quickly. The immigrant visa area was also jam packed and crowded with people. We were number 10 in the line. The whole process took about 3 hours from start to finish, mostly just waiting until we were called. Get there early! I'd imagine the later you come, the longer you will wait. We arrived at 8:00am, but our official appointment was 8:30am.

Registration/fingerprinting:

This process took only a few minutes, but we had to wait for about an hour and a half before they called our number.

The registration woman asked my husband his age and his name, where he is working, has he ever had any other names and if he has lived anywhere else besides Russia. She then asked for the following documents:

- Original Russian marriage certificate (no copy/translation necessary; it was returned after the interview)

- Original Russian birth certificate (no copy/translation necessary; it was returned after the interview)

- Original military ticket/booklet (they asked us for a copy as well, we handed them a complete copy with a complete translation and they kept it; the original was returned after the interview)

- Original police certificate (they also asked for a copy, so we gave her the copy plus translation, but they kept the original. This was the only original document they didn't return to us.)

- My husband's foreign passport (no copy was necessary)

The lady then asked for "financial documents," by which she meant the Affidavit of Support (I-864). I handed her a huge stack of these papers which included:

- Letter of explanation for why I wasn't required to file taxes

- Cover letter explaining my proof of domicile in the US, plus evidence to support that (voting record, mail received at US address, letter of resignation from job in Russia, etc.)

- My joint sponsor's I-864 (the lady asked me: "Is this your mother?" and I affirmed that my mom was the joint-sponsor.)

- Cover letter written by my joint sponsor explaining her financial situation

- My joint sponsor's household member I-864A form

- My joint sponsor's IRS transcripts for the last three years, and copies of W-2 forms as well

- My joint sponsor's bank statements for the last 12 months (this was necessary because we used assets)

- My joint sponsor's proof of US domicile, including US birth certificate, marriage certificate (because of the household member), and copies of the joint sponsor and household member's passports.

After all that, they took my husband's fingerprints. We then waited another hour and they called our number again, this time for the interview.  

Our interview was extremely short, much shorter than what I had read and heard about previous DCF Moscow experiences. The IO was extremely friendly. Both my husband and I went into the interview room together, and I thought that perhaps they would separate us and interview us separately, but I just sat down and she started interviewing us together. First, my husband took the oath in Russian, and then she started asking him questions in English. She asked him only two questions: "What do you do for work?" and "How did the two of you meet?". She typed in some information while he was answering. After that, she asked me three questions: "Does your mother (joint sponsor) have anyone else in her household (brothers or sisters)?" "How long have you been living in Russia?" and "Where are you planning to move back to in the US?" She also was a bit confused by the huge stack of papers, and she asked me if my mom had filled out an I-864, I told her yes, it's there in the pile somewhere. She found it and then she asked my husband when he had taken the medical exam, we explained that we'd done it a few days earlier. Then she said that "Everything looks great" and that as soon as the results of the medical are in, we should expect the approved visa to arrive about a week later. She basically told us we were approved! Woohoo! (They kept the passport obviously.)

I just want to say thanks to everyone on VJ! I seriously couldn't have done it without this site. Thanks again for everyone's input and advice!
