Your Guide to New Year’s Eve in Iceland

From fireworks to comedy shows, 5am parties to the aurora borealis, check out our guide to iceland’s new year celebrations..

December 21, 2023

Iceland may be small, but the New Year’s celebrations here are mighty. For one night of the year, the sky above Reykjavik is illuminated with the spiralling brightness of fireworks. Pops, whizzes and bangs can be heard throughout the night in towns and villages across the island, reaching a crescendo for the countdown to midnight.

Perhaps you want to stay in the thick of it, and party with the people of Reykjavik, or head out on a cruise to witness this spectacle from the sea. New Year can be a great time to go hunting the Northern Lights. If you’re visiting Iceland to see in the end of the year, we’ve got plenty of tours and activities for New Year’s in Iceland . Read on to find out why you should choose Iceland for your New Year festivities.

How do Icelanders celebrate New Year's Eve?

For such a small country, Iceland’s New Year’s Eve celebrations pack a powerful punch. As wintery darkness falls on the 31st of December every year, the people of Reykjavik (and towns and villages all across the island) take to the streets to let off fireworks.

Wandering through the capital, you’ll hear the crack and whizz of fireworks throughout the night and spot them blooming against the night sky from street corners and parks. Kids carry sparklers in gloved hands and the night culminates in a huge crescendo of fireworks at midnight.

There’s a lull in activity around 10.30pm when Icelanders return to their homes to watch the annual comedy show Aramotaskaup, or Skaupid for short. It means The Spoof and is a comedy round-up of all the things that have happened in Iceland over the year. Nearly every Icelander watches it and talks about it the next day.

Reykjavik New Year's Eve

The capital and biggest settlement in Iceland, Reykjavik’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are the largest in the land. In the greater Reykjavik area, there are usually around fifteen bonfires blazing against the night sky. These are places for folk from the neighbourhood to gather, greet each other and keep warm while watching the fireworks. Bonfires tend to be lit around 8.30pm and last until 10.30pm (when most people head home to watch the annual comedy show).

Across the city, you’ll see people letting off fireworks on street corners and in parks, alongside official, organised firework displays. In Reykjavik, locals like to set off fireworks by Hallgrímskirkja Church, and Klambratún and Landakotstún parks.

Anyone can let off fireworks on New Year’s Eve, so it’s a good idea to go out with a pair of protective glasses on if you’re walking around the city. One of the best places to see the New Year’s fireworks in Reykjavik is Öskjuhlíð hill, which the Perlan sits atop.

Christmas in Iceland

christmas iceland

Did you know that there is not one, but thirteen Santa Clauses in Iceland’s Christmas traditions ? That every year a book flood takes place and that a sock-stealing Christmas cat stalks the streets of Reykjavik? Browse our selection of things to see and do at Christmas in Iceland for some inspiration.

New Year's Eve tours in Iceland

With all the jolly chaos and liveliness across Iceland on New Year’s Eve, joining a guided tour on the day itself is a good idea. Guided by locals, you can really get under the skin of Iceland’s traditions with one of Reykjavik Excursions’ New Year experiences.

On the Reykjavik bonfire tour , join a local guide to experience the ultimate New Year tradition in the capital. Stopping at a few different bonfires across the city, you can join families as they celebrate around a two-story bonfire with live music playing in the background and sparklers in hand. It’s a New Year experience you’re unlikely to forget.

If you want to watch the spectacle of Reykjavik’s New Year fireworks from the water, perhaps the New Year’s fireworks cruise is the option for you. Seeing the colourful explosions reflected against the water is doubly as impressive as on land. Plus, you get a complimentary glass of bubbly to toast in the New Year at midnight.

New Year’s Eve is considered a night of magic and mystery in Icelandic folklore – a night when the elves come out to play. Embrace Icelandic tradition and folklore on the magic and mystery at New Year tour . Hear tales of the dead rising in an atmospheric graveyard before heading to the elf stone for an aura of magic. There’s a stop to buy fireworks and see in the New Year with a sparkler in hand with your new friends on this small group tour.

Winter in Iceland

Gullfoss waterfall in winter

Deepest, darkest winter sees a blanket of snow cover Iceland as the Northern Lights dance against the night sky, The nights are long and the temperature dips below freezing, but there is something particularly magical about spending deep winter in Iceland. Tumbling waterfalls morph into icy cascades, the mountains boast a dusting of snow, ice caves open up on glaciers and there’s the best chance to spot the Northern Lights. Find out why you should visit during the colder months with our guide to visiting Iceland in winter .

Tours & activities around New Year's in Iceland

The days around New Year are a great time to embrace Iceland’s wintery landscape. If you’re visiting this little island to experience our New Year celebrations, you might want to fill the days either side with some experiences that really embrace the winter wonderland in December and January.

There’s no denying that the sights of Iceland’s Golden Circle are an essential experience for any visit. In winter, you can combine the classic stops at Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park with a session spotting the Northern Lights against the dramatic landscape outside of the city. Or, embark on a Northern Lights tour straight from the centre of Reykjavik.

With a professional, experienced guide, you’ll find the best spot to see these ethereal lights dancing against the night sky and you’ll have some help capturing that essential photo to show off back home.

During the winter, Iceland’s south shore is a picture of snow-tipped mountains, frozen ice caps and sparkling glacial ice on black-sanded beaches. Road conditions in December and January can be unpredictable, so if you want to explore the natural wonders of the south coast , a tour is the easiest option.

After a night of New Year celebration, you might want to take it easy for the day. Iceland’s bathing culture is the perfect way to unwind after a night of excess and partying. Heading to one of the geothermal pools can refresh and rejuvenate your soul, soaking in the bath-warm waters of a geothermal pool.

For an indulgent soaking session with a view, head to Reykjavik’s Sky Lagoon – a heated pool jutting out over the North Atlantic, particularly dramatic and restless during the winter months.

For a serene experience close to nature, the Hvammsvík Hot Springs offer the perfect blend of relaxation and invigoration. You can enjoy a unique contrast by wading into the brisk sea for a revitalizing dip and then immediately return to the comforting embrace of the hot spring or steam bath. It's an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil retreat with a touch of natural exhilaration.

Northern Lights in Iceland

What’s the best time to see the northern lights in Iceland? That’s what we’re here to share with you. As you’ll likely know, winter is best—but it’s a little more nuanced than that. In this practical guide to the northern lights , you’ll discover everything you need to have the best experience possible.

Frequently asked questions about New Year's in Iceland

Still not sure if Iceland is the destination for you at New Year? We’ve rounded up some frequently asked questions to help you make that decision.

Is Iceland good for New Year?

For such a small country, Iceland’s New Year celebrations far surpass expectations. It’s a night when folk flock to the streets, gather around bonfires and party until the small hours in pubs and bars.

There’s an undeniable atmosphere to Iceland at New Year that is easy to get swept up in, where people hug each other in the street and call out greetings and well wishes to everyone they see. If you’re looking for a fun, friendly way to see in the New Year, then Iceland is definitely a good choice.

How do they celebrate New Year in Iceland?

Across the country, you’ll hear pops and bangs as fireworks light up the night sky. Icelanders save all their fireworks for this festive period, buying around 500 tonnes of fireworks each year. So fireworks are a big part of Iceland’s New Year celebration.

There’s also the annual comedy show, a parody of the major events that have taken place across the country during the year. Most Icelanders watch this at 10.30pm before continuing their celebrations with more fireworks, reaching a climax at midnight. After midnight, there are house parties to attend and pubs and bars stay open until around 5am to keep the celebrations going.

Can anyone buy fireworks in Iceland for New Year?

Currently, the law in Iceland restricts the sale of fireworks to between the 28th of December and the 6th of January. This is the only time of year fireworks are allowed to be let off in Iceland too.

There has often been discussion around further restriction of fireworks, but since fireworks are sold by ICE-SAR (the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue) and profits go towards the upkeep and running costs of the search and rescue services, they continue to be sold during a limited time of the year. So, when you buy a packet of sparklers for your New Year celebration in Iceland, you are helping out the ICE-SAR.

Are restaurants in Iceland open during New Year's?

Quite a lot of restaurants close on New Year’s Eve as Icelanders don’t tend to eat out to celebrate the new year. You’ll still find a healthy crop of restaurants open in Reykjavik though, and you should make sure to reserve a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Those that are open often offer a set menu and book up months in advance.

Is December a good time to go to Iceland?

While the days are short and the nights are long, December is a great time to visit Iceland. First of all, you’ve got a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights in December as the sun sets early and darkness lasts long into the day.

It often snows in December, which can make driving a challenge, but if you’re using organised tours to get around you can admire the drama of the snow-covered scenery from the comfort of a bus or 4x4. Filled with tradition and folklore, Iceland is also a great place to celebrate Christmas and New Year, making December the ideal time to head to this North Atlantic island.

Which country is best for New Year’s Eve?

Ringing in the New Year can be a blast across the world, whether you’re one of the first to greet the next year in New Zealand or counting down to midnight in Times Square, New York. But there are a few countries, particularly in northern Europe, where New Year’s celebrations are steeped in old-world traditions. Scotland’s Hogmanay, for example, is a world-famous New Year celebration where street parties take place across Edinburgh and everyone links arms to sing Auld Lang Syn at the strike of midnight.

A small and friendly country, Iceland’s New Year celebrations are inclusive and very accessible for visitors, making it one of the best countries in the world to celebrate the turn of the year.

What to wear during New Year’s in Iceland?

Throughout New Year’s Eve, you’ll see Icelanders dressed up in sparkling sequins and funny hats. People here like to dress up for the festivities and you’ll fit right in with a sparkly top and silly headwear if you want to get into the spirit of the celebration. Of course, it’s deepest, darkest winter and the weather will be cold. Most people layer with thermals underneath their sparkles and a big woolly jumper to keep warm by the bonfire. Once you’re safely in the pub, you can show off your finery in the warm.

So, that’s it – everything you need to know about Iceland’s New Year celebrations. Visiting Iceland for New Year means celebrating with a fun and friendly nation, gathering around a neighbourhood bonfire and watching the fireworks explode above Reykjavik. If you really want to get a taste of a proper Icelandic New Year’s Eve, check out our tours for New Year’s in Iceland , and book your experience today.

One complaint was that we were run from early in the morning till late in the evening. We were eating late and going to bed on a full stomach. Maybe one afternoon having a few hours to ourselves. Paul was a great guide and we enjoyed all his commentaries. Very knowledgeable and a pleasure to have him take us on this trip.

It was a great time. Everything was easily followed and organized well. Only drawback was the weather, and not being able to see the northern lights during our time. All things considered, will definitely be going back to Iceland.

Our tour guide, Hjalti was amazing! The hotels were lovely and of course the nature was magnificent. What people love about Christmas & New Year Tours in Iceland

Overall the guides and drivers were excellent - in their knowledge, driving safety, preparing the group for activities that were next on the list. The only down time during the day was some of the distances between stops. But not an issue as we were well aware of that before hand. A good value for the cost!!
Arctic adventure is strongly recommended, lots of bonus stops and get to enjoy the best local cruisin
Iceland is a natural wonder and this tour provided us with the opportunity to experience it.

Welcome to your New Year´s tour in Iceland. Our private chauffeur waits for you in the arrival hall of the airport and transfers you to your accommodation in central Reykjavík. During the day we recommend to explore the center of Reykjavík. It is also possible to “prepare yourself” for the evening by visiting the Northern Lights Centre in the old harbor. Learn more about the magic lights before seeing (hopefully) tonight how beautiful they are in real.

In the evening you will visit Laugarvatn Fontana´s open-air geothermal baths where you can relax in the warm pools and natural steam rooms. Enjoy a local style buffet (included) before heading out to hunt for the Northern Lights. Iceland is one of the best places in Europe to see the Northern Lights because of its location so close to the Arctic circle. You will have the chance of spotting colors in the sky ranging from green to red and even purple. After viewing the Northern Lights for a while you drive back to Reykjavik and at approximately 01:00 a.m. you will be back at your accommodation.

Highlights of the day:  Reykjavík City,  Northern Lights Centre (entrance not included), visit of Fontana Spa, dinner buffet, Northern Lights tour

Highlights:

Today you explore the so-called Golden Circle with the three primary stops Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. The tour is a small group tour in a super jeep which is more personal and intimate. You combine the most popular sites in Iceland with an exciting drive to a glacier.

After seeing the highlights of the golden circle, your guide takes you to the second largest glacier Langjökull. The road to the glacier is impassable for normal cars during winter and normally there is a lot of snow in December. Enjoy the breathtaking views and some super jeep fun in this remote area of Iceland. After an exciting day in the Icelandic nature, you will be back in Reykjavik in the evening.

Highlights of the day:  The Golden Circle,  Þingvellir National Park,  Geyser spouting hot springs,  Gullfoss waterfall, and more

Today you go on a guided minibus tour to the South of Iceland with an easy glacier walk on Sólheimajökull glacier included. You will visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind this magnificent wall of water and you will also stop at Skogafoss waterfall. During winter the waterfalls are often partly frozen which gives them a unique look. After that, it is time for the glacier walk and you will explore a wonderland of ice formations, ridges, and deep crevasses. Not many people can say that they have walked on a glacier but today you will be one of them!

In the afternoon your guide shows you the beautiful black sand beach of Reynisfara. This beach features stacks of basalt columns that wall off surrounding cliffs scattered with caves. Offshore you will see the Reynisdrangar pillars, basalt rock stacks that rise from the sea. Icelandic legend says they were trolls turned into rock by the rising sun when they came home late after a fishing trip.

Highlights of the day: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfall, black sand beach of Reynisfara, Reynisdrangar pillars, 1-hour glacier walk

In the morning you will go on a guided tour of the volcanic active Reykjanes peninsula. On your way, you will visit the geothermal area in Krysuvik. There you will find boiling mud pools and colorful mountains. The next stop will be at the “Bridge between Continents”. This is a 15 meters long footbridge spanning a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. If time allows, you might make a short photo stop at Gunnuhver and its hot springs. In the early afternoon, you will go on an adventurous ATV tour on Reykjanes peninsula. During this one hour tour, you will drive along lava and black sand on top of a mountain with a great view over the whole area. The ATVs are automatic and easy to drive, so no experience is needed.

You have some time in the afternoon to prepare for the evening. You will enjoy a great New Year’s Eve buffet in Haust Restaurant . After dinner, you will visit a bonfire. The custom of having bonfires on New Year’s Eve in Iceland dates back to the 18th century and the locals gather around the several bonfires dispersed all over the city, celebrating and singing. You will be back in the city center for the big firework show at midnight and one of the best (but also most crowded places) is at the Hallgrims Church. After the fireworks show you can experience the world famous and thrilling Reykjavik nightlife.

Highlights of the day: ATV tour, visit of a bonfire, fireworks, Reykjavik’s nightlife, and more

After the last night festivities, you have a free day to sleep late and relax a bit. We recommend a walk in central Reykjavík to get some fresh air and explore some of the highlights of the city. Visit the Hallgrims church and take a look at the Einar Jónsson Sculpture Garden next to the church (free entrance). Einar Jónsson is one of the most famous Icelandic artists and his bronze casts are mostly figurative sculptures which fuse classical art with northern myth. Walk along Reykjavik’s scenic waterfront, look out for the remarkable Solfar Sun Voyager sculpture and do not miss the modern Harpa Music Hall. Behind Harpa, you also find a picturesque small yellow lighthouse.

In the early afternoon, you will visit the famous Blue Lagoon, a spa located in a magnificent black lava field. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the milky blue water makes your skin super soft.

Highlights of the day: Reykjavik, visit of the Blue Lagoon Optional activities: Winter whale watching, Northern Lights Tour in a super jeep

Sadly today your Iceland New years eve tour comes to an end. Transfer by bus back to the International Airport Keflavik. Thanks for traveling with Iceland Unlimited and all the best for 2019.

New Year’s Eve in Iceland

Iceland is initially popular for its natural beauty and landscapes. While the large sandy beaches, high peaks, and long-stretched glaciers deserve all the praise they get from the whole world, several other immensely beautiful and entertaining elements of the land of ice and fire have recently gained a lot of spotlights. Iceland has become enormously popular for its exquisite festivities and celebrations of every festival and event, each one of which is laced with a beautiful show of fireworks. Filled with food, drinks, dance, and banter, festivals in Iceland have a different kind of vibe to them. Tourists have shown an equal amount of enthusiasm and interest as the locals in attending these festivals and becoming one with the culture and traditions of Iceland.

Apart from the traditional festivals which are exclusive to Iceland and its culture, New Year’s Eve is the most loved and popular event in Iceland. The new year is always welcomed with a blast a lot of partying and finally a gorgeous show of fireworks. The whole country indulges in these celebrations while the tourists also come forward and join. There are a bunch of things one can do in Iceland when it’s time for the new year to arrive. From parties in clubs and bars to events, concerts, skits, shows, bonfires, several cultural events, and countryside celebrations, numerous things are available for both locals and tourists to do on New Year’s Eve. Let’s find all about Iceland at the time of New Year’s Eve, what is the weather like, what events you can take part in, and how to have the time of your life when welcoming the new years in Iceland.

The Weather

Since it is the end of December and the beginning of January , it is very evident that the weather is going to be cold, very cold. Most of the country is covered in snow this time of the year and the northern lights are in full swing.

The temperature in December stays between -2°C and 4 degrees while the temperature in January the temperature stays around -1°C. There have been times when the temperature has dropped till -10°C but never below it. This simply means that the weather is going to something a winter fanatic would enjoy. Needless to say, if you are spending Christmas in the country as well, it is most likely going to be a white Christmas .

Both of these months do not get a lot of daylight which gives all the more time to continue the nightlife and the fireworks. There are only about 4.5 hours of daylight in these two months on average. The night lasts for an average of 21 hours with daylight showing up late in the morning or noon and its dark again before one knows it.

How does the Party Proceed?

Even if New Year’s Eve is all about partying and merrymaking, there is a certain pattern or a schedule that Icelanders follow even when preparing to party. Friends and family are a part of every celebration.

Friends and family start gathering around 6 or 7 pm. An array of festivities, chats, and merrymaking is followed by dinner and then some pre-party rituals near the bonfire. Some partying goes around till 10 – 10:30 pm and then people head home to catch the comedy show, or watch it at the party.

Fireworks start to show up as midnight approaches and take on full swing as the clock strikes 12 and continue till 1 am. Some people keep on the firework show late till the early hours of the day. The best part of this show is that it is not synchronized. Everyone puts on a separate show of their own and it makes a beautiful show for everyone to enjoy. Most people head to the party after the fireworks. Some choose to go to the clubs and bars which stay open till late in the morning but most of the townsfolk go for house parties.

iceland trips new year

Spending the Evening in the Countryside

The countryside is a little bit different from the main cities like Reykjavik or Akureyri but the gist of the celebration is still there. If you are around the countryside on New Year’s Eve then you will pretty much have the same kind of experience that one would have in the big cities. The rituals are pretty similar starting with the gathering of friends and family, leading to bonfires, food, drinks, Áramótaskaup, fireworks, parties, and ends with after-parties.

The only difference you will find between the country and the big city celebrations is the size of the firework display, the number of clubs and bars you get to attend, and the number of bonfires. The rest is pretty much the same. If you are going to spend the eve somewhere in a remote area or a small settlement then go out and talk to the locals. There is always some kind of events, dance, concerts or gala planned in the area which you can join. But if you are planning to escape the hustle and bustle of the town then renting a small cabin can be the best way to welcome the new year with food and drinks.

Best Places to Catch Fireworks in the Capital

No matter where you are at, you are sure to get a dose of the incredible firework display of Iceland but some places still offer a better view than others. Choose the front area of Hallgrímskirkja church that surrounds the statue of Eiríksson both for firework viewing and firing. This particular area will be covered with swarms of people coming out to fire up their stack and welcome the next year. If you want to mingle with fellow enthusiasts then this is the best way to go for it.

On the contrary, if you would like a nice quiet place to celebrate and toast to the new year surrounded by your family then the balcony of Perlan is the perfect place to be it. Kick-off the evening with a fantastic dinner and send off the old year at midnight with crackers. Other great locations include the Harpa Concert Hall , a bonfire near the sea in Ægissíða area, or the Sun Voyager Sculpture of the capital city. No matter which place you choose, make sure that you are wearing warm layers and have a bottle of bubbly handy for the toast.

Get One-on-One with the Lore

Iceland is known for its natural beauty, sure, but it is also known for its undeniable beliefs in elves, fairy, giants, and many other mystical creatures. Every ritual and tradition has a meaning in Iceland which represents how rich the culture is that Icelanders hold. Lighting up of firecrackers on the year’s eve is a way to represent the concept of leaving the past year behind by setting it on flames and moving on to the next. From spooky to spiritual, several kinds of folklore are connected to the arrival of a new year and the dawn of the previous one. One sure way to know more about the Lore is to chat up with the locals when you get to the bonfire.

Planning Your December 31st in Iceland

December 31 st will be a busy day for you if you decide to spend it the traditional way like the whole of Iceland. Considering starting the day by visiting one of the several bakeries in the capital – sipping coffee and munching on some fresh baked goods. You can squeeze in a small day tour after that. As the day starts to proceed towards the evening, consider buying firecrackers for the night, a bottle of champagne, and some delicious snacks. Once you are done shopping, put on your warm, heavy jackets and head out to the street meeting the friends that you have made during your travels. As you chat and laugh with locals and other tourists, it will be time to head to a bonfire. Consider deciding beforehand on this one because it could be a hassle if you try to pick one at the moment since there will be so many bonfires around you.

After that, you can either leave early for the gala dinner at The Pearl or get back to your accommodation to watch Áramótaskaupið Comdey Show. If you want to go to dinner in any restaurant on New Year’s Eve then it is recommended that you make reservations well in advance as getting a table impromptu will be a problem on a busy night like this. Get to the main streets in time for the firework show and after that hit any club or party you would like to. Having fun is the key to make your New Year’s Eve in Iceland the best one yet.

In the evening

Come evening, it’s time to chase the mesmerizing Northern Lights. You’ll be whisked off to a spot in the countryside, away from the city lights. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are an mind-blowing natural phenomenon. So it’s worth keeping in mind that sightings are weather-dependent and can’t be guaranteed.

If you don’t see them tonight, you’ll be able to join another Aurora excursion for free later on in your trip!

You also have the option to upgrade to a small group excursion for a more intimate experience, or even a trip via super jeep or boat if you’re feeling adventurous!

Day 2 – The Golden Circle

29 December

The Golden Circle needs little introduction: it is home to some of the most stunning and famous sights in Iceland.

You will see the hot spring Strokkur shoot a column of water up to 30 meters (98 feet) into the air every 4-8 minutes. It is a thrilling experience that never gets old. You will stop to admire the magnificent Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, created where the river Hvítá tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 meters (105 feet) deep.

This tour also includes the historical and geological wonder, Þingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimeters per year.

Included experience

Included with your package is a visit to the idyllic Friðheimar greenhouse cultivation center. Here you and your group will learn about the magic behind growing delicious, pesticide-free tomatoes and cucumbers with the aid of the geothermal heat that Iceland has in abundance.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to a different adventure on this day. All experiences include a Golden Circle tour, so you won’t miss out on this classic touring route.

Day 3 – Glacier ice cave tour & super jeep ride

Get ready to discover dazzling ice caves with an expert guide. Today’s small group excursion will take you to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers Katla volcano.

This morning, your guide will collect you from Reykjavík for the drive to Vík. And if daylight allows, you’ll have the chance to stop off at Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Once you arrive in Vík, you’ll ride in a super jeep to the base of the glacier.

Now the real adventure begins! Strap on a pair of crampons and follow your guide as you hike across the glacier to reach the Kötlujökull ice caves. The caves here are particularly striking thanks to the layers of black volcanic ash you can see in the blue ice.

After spending time exploring the natural features in the ice and learning from your knowledgeable guide, you’ll head back to the vehicle for the return trip to Reykjavík. On the drive back, simply sit back and watch the winter sunset.

Day 4 – New Year’s Eve walk & dinner

31 December

Icelanders go all out with their New Year’s Day celebrations, and during your trip you can too! Begin the day with a guided tour of Reykjavík city center, where you’ll learn about the local culture and traditions. Later, indulge in a delicious meal at a restaurant in Reykjavík.

In the morning

Meet your local guide, dressed in Icelandic national costume, in the heart of Reykjavík. Here you’ll uncover Iceland’s New Year’s customs as you’re shown around the city’s historic downtown area.

Your group will start by meeting the Icelandic Search and Rescue Team, who raise funds by selling fireworks for the big celebration. Your guide will pick up some small fireworks to set off at the end of the tour over a glass of champagne.

Then you’ll have a few hours to spend at your leisure before dinner.

The New Year’s fun begins at 21:30 with a 4-course celebration meal (included). After dinner, join the Icelanders at a bonfire in the local area. Warm yourself up, gaze up at the sky, and watch the fireworks as midnight draws closer.

If you’re the party type, why not check out some of the local nightlife venues? There you can dance your way into the New Year with the locals.

Day 5 – Blue Lagoon spa day

After yesterday’s festivities a healthy dose of R&R is probably what you’re after on New Year’s Day. Today you’ll be whisked off to Iceland’s most iconic geothermal spa: the Blue Lagoon.

Enjoy a drink as you luxuriate in the lagoon’s turquoise, silica-rich waters. And take in the surrounding lava field that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Day 6 – Goodbye Iceland

FAQs about our multi-day trips

How does an iceland multi-day trip work.

Throughout your multi-day trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be based in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík or Akureyri the capital of the North. From here, you can join guided tours into the surrounding countryside to soak up the mind-blowing scenery. Your package will include at least one day trip, and depending on the length of your tour package you can opt to add more.

It’s worth bearing in mind that you won’t have the same guide throughout your trip. In fact, on each escorted group day trip from Reykjavík or Akureyri, you’ll get to meet a new guide and new fellow travelers.

What’s more, spending each night in the same accommodation means you don’t need to worry about unpacking and repacking during your trip. It also gives you the chance to experience more of the city’s restaurants, food halls, and bars. And you’ll have time to browse the local shops and visiting the city’s attractions.

How many people will there be on a multi-day trip?

When you opt for a multi-day package, you won’t be traveling with the same guide and group throughout your trip. This means that number of fellow travelers you meet on your guided excursions will vary depending on the activity.

For instance, if you’re going on an ice cave tour, your group could include a just a handful people. Meanwhile, a tour of the Golden Circle by bus will often be a larger group as you’ll likely be traveling by coach. And you’ll find evening Northern Lights tours are usually by coach too, although you have the option to upgrade to a small group, super jeep, or boat tour.

What are the buses like on a multi-day trip?

Depending on the excursion, your bus could be either a minibus or coach. Most buses will have free onboard Wi-Fi and charging points for your phone. Larger buses also have overhead compartments for stowing your bag and jacket.

It’s good to know that although there’s no restroom on the bus, your guide will make sure to include regular breaks throughout the journey.

Do multi-day trips include airport transfers to Reykjavík?

Yes, all of these multi-day trips include airport transfers by bus from Keflavík International Airport to Reykjavík on arrival and departure.

What meals are included in a multi-day trip package?

On each morning of your trip, you’ll get a tasty continental breakfast at your accommodation. In most places, this is served buffet-style in a communal dining room.

With most packages, lunch and dinner are not included so you’re free to choose from all of the options available. In Reykjavík and Akureyri, you’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to eat.

Some festive packages include special meals. Check the ‘What’s included?’ section for the individual package to find out exactly what you’ll get.

If your package features longer day tours, you’ll find that the guide will factor in lunch and restroom stops. But it’s still good to come prepared by packing a few snacks and plenty of water. And if you prefer, you could bring a picnic lunch rather than eat out.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

iceland trips new year

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

When Is the Next Solar Eclipse?

If you miss April 8, you may need to travel to find the next event—or wait a long time.

solar eclipse in new york

  • The April 8 solar eclipse will cover a wide swatch of the United States, but it isn’t the only eclipse hitting the world in the next decade.
  • For those based in the U.S., the 2024 solar eclipse is the one to see, but there’s other worldwide destinations getting ready for their own eclipse events in the coming years.
  • Mark your calendars for Greenland, Iceland, and Spain in 2026.

But what if you miss out on the fantastical site on April 8? How long will you have to wait for the next total solar eclipse to spin around? It all depends on your willingness to travel . But if you’re waiting to see the next solar eclipse in the contiguous U.S., you’ll have to wait quite a while.

When Is the Next Solar Eclipse in the U.S.?

The next eclipse after this one to shade American soil will be 20 years later on August 23, 2044, and that will fall on Montana and North Dakota as it mainly blocks out the Sun in Canada. So if you’re going to catch an eclipse in the U.S., the 2024 eclipse is your last opportunity for quite awhile.

But if you’re up for traveling the globe, there’s plenty more big events coming in the next decade.

Aug. 12, 2026: Iceland and Europe

Summer may be a perfect time to visit Greenland or Iceland. And August 12, 2026 may make those trips even more appealing with a coming total solar eclipse. The path of the eclipse is heavily weighted to the far north of the globe, but the path also centers nice and wide over western Iceland, making this a key stopping point for the 2026 event. If that wasn’t enough, the path curves into Spain and Portugal, giving the 2026 offering a little bit of variety for the two minute-plus duration.

Aug. 2, 2027: Northern Africa

If you’re hankering to view a total solar eclipse matches up with a desire to see Africa, start planning for August 2, 2027. That total solar eclipse may be lost to many (a large portion of the path covers the Indian Ocean), but over land, the path clips the top of the African continent. It hits Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Egypt while also grabbing the Arabian Peninsula through portions of Saudi Arabia and Yemen. This eclipse could last over six minutes . The northern Africa path also catches the southernmost portion of the Iberian Peninsula, giving Gibraltar (and a miniscule section of Spain) viewing options.

July 22, 2028: Australia

At least some portion of Australia is touched by a total solar eclipse five times in the span of 15 years from 2023 into 2038. The next total solar eclipse to hit the continent will last for about five minutes on July 22, 2028, when the path of totality nicely crosses Western Australia, the Northern Territory, southwest Queensland, and New South Wales. Sydney will be right in the heart of the path for the first time since 1857 . But it isn’t just Australia in the 2028 path—New Zealand will also find itself in a prime viewing spot.

Nov. 25, 2030: Australia and Southern Africa

While the Indian Ocean will again see the bulk of the path of totality for a Nov. 25, 2030, total eclipse, a portion of southern Africa and Australia also rest on either end of the event. The path will hit Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and South Africa early in the event, and will arrive right before sunset in Australia.

March 30, 2033: Russia and Alaska

Alaska is the next U.S. state to get included in a total solar eclipse path of totality, on March 30, 2033. The two-minute-plus event grabs a portion of Russia and western Alaska, with totality visible in Nome, Alaska.

Bjarni Benediktsson celebrating in a previous election

Iceland appoints Bjarni Benediktsson to replace Katrín Jakobsdóttir as PM

Benediktsson takes over as Jakobsdóttir steps down after six years as PM to run in presidential elections

Iceland has appointed Bjarni Benediktsson to replace Katrín Jakobsdóttir as prime minister after she resigned to run in the country’s upcoming presidential election.

Benediktsson, who was previously the Nordic country’s foreign minister, officially took over from Jakobsdóttir on Tuesday night after she stood down following more than six years in office.

The announcement came after an agreement was reached between his party, the Independence party, which is conservative and pro-business and trade, and the other governing parties: the Progressive party and Jakobsdóttir’s Left-Greens.

The Independence party said in a statement that, after “very good discussions in recent days”, the governing parties had “reached a conclusion”. Benediktsson, it said, wanted the government “to stand for political stability”.

He plans to focus on issues including disability, energy procurement and immigration, as well as tackling inflation, the statement said.

“This is a very happy moment,” said Jakobsdóttir outside Bessastaðir, the official presidential residence near Reykjavík, on Tuesday night.

She added: “I am happy that these parties have managed to agree on a functioning government.”

Benediktsson previously served as finance minister under Jakobsdottír and was prime minister for 10 months in 2017.

Unless the government decides to call a snap election before then, Iceland’s next parliamentary elections are due to be held next year.

In Iceland, the prime minister is head of government and usually has a seat in parliament. They are formally appointed by the president and exercise executive authority with the cabinet with the support of parliament. The president, meanwhile, is a ceremonial figurehead and head of state, voted for by the public, with limited political power.

The change in leadership comes at a pivotal time for Iceland, which is in the midst of volcanic eruptions near Grindavík that have led to the evacuation of thousands of people, the death of one man who was working to secure the site, and regional disruption to power supply.

After announcing her candidacy last week to replace the outgoing president Guðni Th. Jóhannesson – who, despite high approval ratings, announced on New Year’s Day that he was stepping down after two terms – Jakobsdóttir is now a frontrunner to replace the historian and former university professor.

Other leading presidential candidates include politics professor Baldur Þórhallsson , comedian and Reykjavík’s former mayor Jón Gnarr, and businessperson Halla Tómasdóttir.

after newsletter promotion

During her time as prime minister, Jakobsdóttir has been a prominent voice on the global stage for gender equality.

As well as serving as chair of the Council of Women World Leaders, Iceland’s premier made headlines last year when she talked about her loneliness amid the dwindling number of female world leaders. Taking part in her country’s record-breaking women’s strike in October, she told the Guardian that her dream was to achieve full gender equality in Iceland before 2030.

In 2022, she also published her debut crime novel, Reykjavík: A Crime Story, which she co-wrote with bestselling Icelandic author Ragnar Jónasson.

In a video released last week, she said the world faced “enormous challenges in climate and environmental issues. The pace of technological development is unprecedented, and it has never been more important to foster and protect humanity”.

She added: “The experience I have in politics, the experience of bringing together different groups, and the understanding I have gained during this time, make me well-suited for this [presidential] office.”

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: Arrival & Hunt for the Northern Lights

On arrival to Keflavik International Airport, your driver will greet you and chauffeur you to your accommodation in Reykjavík. The rest of the day is at your leisure. The colourful city centre is always full of life, offering a great variety of museums, shops and cosy cafes to suit all tastes. You can explore downtown easily on foot, and a walk along the old harbour and seafront is highly recommended.

Later in the evening, if weather conditions allow, you will be taken for a super jeep tour in search of the magnificent Northern lights, also known as aurora borealis.* By choosing a super jeep tour, you are able to go to off the beaten track to search for the lights, reaching places that are inaccessible by bus.

Spend the next four nights in Reykjavík.

*Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. We book the Northern Lights Tour on your first day to optimise your chances of a sighting during your trip. Should the excursion be cancelled due to adverse weather, we can rebook you later on during your stay.

Please note that the order of activities on this itinerary may vary depending on your arrival date.

Day 2: Golden Circle Super Jeep & Snowmobile Safari

You have a big day of adventures ahead of you today, with a guided super jeep tour of the sights of the Golden Circle. This is a popular route in South Iceland that contains some of the country’s most well-known attractions. The first stop is at Þingvellir National Park, an area full of unique geology and the site of Iceland’s ancient assembly grounds.

Next is Haukadalur valley, the home of Geysir – the original geyser. While Geysir is currently dormant, its neighbour, Strokkur, spouts boiling water up to 30 metres in the air every few minutes. It‘s a fantastic glimpse in the raw geothermal energy of this volcanic island. Then you will visit the beautiful Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, even more stunning in its white winter coat.

The high point of today’s tour is a visit to Langjökull glacier, where you will enjoy a 1-hour guided snowmobile adventure. This excursion requires you to be in good physical fitness.

Later, you will return to Reykjavík, where you can enjoy the evening at your leisure and dine at one of the city’s many highly rated restaurants.

Day 3: Relax at the Blue Lagoon & Enjoy Leisure time in Reykjavik

Today, you will be picked up for a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon. You will have a chance to bathe in the heated geothermal pool, which is rich with silica and soothing for your skin, and enjoy the unique surroundings. You can also visit a sauna or steambath and chooose from an array of spa services (which must be booked in advance).

After your time at the Blue Lagoon, you will board a transfer back to Reykjavík, where you can spend the late afternoon, and evening, at your leisure. If you are up for some adventure, you can book a northern lights excursion. For instance, you could take a northern lights boat tour, where you could see the majestic lights flicker and dance in the sky, far from the bright city lights of Reykjavik.

Day 4: New Year's Celebration in Reykjavík

This morning your Icelandic New Year's Eve experience begins with a local guide showing you some of the main highlights of downtown Reykjavík, allowing you to take part in local traditions. You will have a chance to taste some local food, admire the city's Christmas decorations and enjoy fireworks that the guide will set off. You then have the afternoon to spend at your leisure.

Tonight, you will attend an exclusive New Year’s Eve party hosted by Nordic Visitor and Héðinn Kitchen & Bar.* This New Year’s celebration takes place at a beautiful venue in the Grandi district, in the heart of downtown Reykjavík. Mix and mingle with other guests over an apéritif and then enjoy a gourmet 3-course dinner, paired with selected wines, and live entertainment during your meal. Afterwards, you and fellow dinner guests will be taken to a large neighbourhood bonfire to celebrate with Icelanders. You will then return to Héðinn Kitchen & Bar for dessert, sparkling wine and the exciting countdown to the New Year. Once the event finishes, you can head to the city centre and continue the party, like the locals, with music and dancing late into the night.

*Please note that venue location and more details about the 2024 New Year’s Eve party will be available as soon as possible.

Day 5: Departure from Iceland

Your winter getaway to Iceland has come to an end, and you will have a semi-private transfer from your accommodation to Keflavík International Airport. If you are departing in the afternoon and are interested in adding an optional activity in the morning, please arrange this with your travel consultant in advance, as there are a limited number of activities available during the holiday season.

Optional extras

Customise your adventure with these Optional Extras.

We recommend adding your extra activities to the tour now for the best booking experience and to secure your spot, as activities are likely to sell out.

Essential information

Everything you need to know about this tour before you book

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this multi-day tour in Iceland. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Iceland Travel Guide .

On a multi-day tour, Nordic Visitor books your accommodation and excursions for a self-guided travel experience. That means you’ll enjoy some free time to explore on your own as well as planned, guided day tours.

Each activity is run by a different tour operator, so you’ll get to meet a few local guides throughout your trip.

You can rest assured that Nordic Visitor only works with a small number of handpicked suppliers that meet our high standards. The activities you’ll participate in are all extremely well rated so you’re sure to have a memorable time.

During your tour, we’re with you every step of the way. On arrival, you’ll receive personalised information, including an itinerary, map and detailed Iceland Travel Guide. Plus, you’ll always be able to reach us on your trip by calling our 24/7 helpline.

Yes, when you book your Iceland tour with Nordic Visitor, you always get airport transfers to and from Keflavík Airport included. This will be a private, shared or bus transfer, depending on your itinerary. Please check the details of your tour to confirm.

If you add extra nights to your stay before or after the scheduled trip, we’ll rearrange your transfers to fit your new itinerary.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your travel consultant if you have any specific requests about optional activities or services.

Due to the nature of this tour and activities included, it’s not recommended for families with young children. That said, it is suitable for well-travelled, active children of 12 years or older. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

If you have something specific in mind, get in touch with your travel consultant and they’ll create your dream trip.

Your day-by-day itinerary will be modified based on your arrival date. Except for some fixed events, the other days will be rearranged by your travel consultant to make sure you take full advantage of your time in Iceland.

On your multi-day tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our local Iceland travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

During the booking process, you can choose from single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in Iceland room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please  contact us  to discuss customising your accommodation options.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a Reykjavík-based travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

If you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Iceland.

Visiting from another country? You can find the complete list of countries whose nationals require a visa to enter Iceland on the website of Iceland’s  Directorate of Immigration . If you do require a visa, they maintain a list of local embassies that can assist you with the process.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Iceland. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Read more about visas, airports and airlines in the  getting to Iceland  section of our travel guide.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Iceland for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore, what you want to see in Iceland and any events you might like to attend.

In summer, June to August , you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours, compared to the winter. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book your summer trip in May or September . These shoulder season months have more tour and attraction availability.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter, apart from the Christmas holiday season. This is the ideal time to try to spot the northern lights.

Find out what  annual Icelandic events and festivals  are on in our travel guide. Or read more about the  best time to visit Iceland  on our blog.

The festive holidays are meaningful for Icelanders. For that reason, shops, museums and restaurants usually close their doors for part of the holiday season. They are often as follows: 23 December: Open until late 24 December (Christmas Eve): Open until noon 25 December (Christmas Day): Closed 26 December: Closed 27- 30 December: Open as usual 31 December (New Year’s Eve): Open until noon 1 January (New Year’s Day): Closed A few establishments will remain open during the holidays. For more information, you should call or check online for each spot you’d like to visit on those days.

Please note: We highly recommend you make dinner reservations well in advance if you are staying in Iceland at this time of year.

Because of its northerly location close to the Arctic Circle, Iceland has limited daylight in winter.

Around Christmastime, from early December until late January, you can expect an average of 4–5 hours of daylight. These extended hours of darkness give you a higher chance of seeing the northern lights.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Iceland .

Yes! Wintertime is the right season to visit Iceland if you want to see the northern lights (or aurora borealis). You can experience the northern lights between October and March, with peak visibility from December through February.

For the best chances of seeing them, a self-drive tour is ideal. It means you have the flexibility of deciding when and where to go. To enjoy the aurora at its brightest, you’ll want to head into or even stay in the countryside, away from city lights.

Please note that as the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, sightings cannot be guaranteed. Even if you go out on a specific northern lights excursion, you might not see them, depending on the conditions or cloud cover.

Read our Iceland northern lights guide to learn more.

The winter climate in Iceland is generally mild compared to other Northern European countries. That said, the temperature can drop below freezing at times. And the Atlantic winds can make it feel colder than it is.

You can expect average temperatures between 4°C (39°F) and -1°C (30°F). Throughout winter (October to April), the weather conditions are very changeable, so you could experience rain, snow, sun and cold winds.

For more information on the local climate, read this guide to Iceland weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. Your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Your scheduled journey to the Blue Lagoon is by bus, with up to 70 travellers. When you arrive in Iceland, you’ll receive vouchers with all your transfer details.

Children must be at least 2 years old to visit the Blue Lagoon. And it’s mandatory for children aged 2 to 8 to wear inflatable armbands while in the lagoon. These are provided free of charge.

Please note that only 2 children under the age of 10 can be admitted into the lagoon per guardian.

Yes, you can. The Blue Lagoon is open year-round and popular during the festive season.

Your dedicated travel consultant will book your entrance in advance, so you’ll have a specific arrival time and duration at the lagoon. If you’d prefer a different time, please let us know as soon as possible.

A snowmobiling tour allows you to get up close to the actual snow and ice in Iceland.

You’ll start by meeting your tour guide for a safety briefing. They will also provide you with the gear you need and teach you how to drive a snowmobile. After you’re outfitted and informed, it‘s time to take to the snow.

Here is some important information:

  • Tours are family-friendly, but passengers must be above the age of 6.
  • Drivers must have a valid driver‘s licence.
  • Two people share a snowmobile and take turns driving.

Iceland’s winters are chilly although not as cold as you may expect. As you’ll probably spend a lot of time outdoors, we recommend bringing plenty of layers to stay warm and dry.

Here is a recommended winter packing list for your trip to Iceland:

  • Durable insulated jacket, which should be waterproof
  • Robust walking boots with a good grip
  • Mid-layers such as a fleece or woollen jumper
  • A few pairs of warm hiking socks
  • Hat, gloves and scarf
  • Swimwear for visiting geothermal pools or spas
  • Backpack for daily adventures
  • Electronic equipment such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for exploring in the snow or glacier excursions
  • And don’t forget your camera!

For more information, check out this  Iceland packing list .

Breakfast at your Iceland accommodations is always included when you travel with Nordic Visitor.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 2,000–3,000 ISK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 3,000–6,000 ISK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 7,000 ISK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits so you can reserve your trip as early as it’s convenient for you. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well ahead. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

At that time, they’ll confirm the availability of your tour. Then the booking process starts, which may take a few weeks. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip. You will also receive more information about what to expect during your trip.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

You can get in touch with our Iceland travel experts ahead of your trip if you have any questions. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Iceland Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Icelanders speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying souvenirs, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything. Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll email you copies of your travel documents.

When you arrive in Iceland, you’ll receive a welcome bag with hard copies of your itinerary, attraction and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Iceland Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Keflavík?

After picking up your luggage, you will be greeted by a driver holding a sign with your name in the arrivals hall. The driver will hand over your welcome package with hard copies of your travel documents. You’ll then be driven to your hotel in Reykjavík.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2 PM and 4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel so you can start exploring before check-in. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will need to check out from your room, but will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before catching your transfer to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Icelandic Króna (ISK), the official currency of Iceland.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate as issued by the Central Bank of Iceland. This means conversions from ISK to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These should tide you over until you’re in Iceland to take your own pictures.

new years sparkles

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

We enjoyed everything!

We enjoyed everything! The hotel was excellent and very well located as most tours picked up just outside the hotel and many other points of interest were within a 10- to 20-minute walk. The Northern Lights tour was test of patience but we were lucky and saw a great show on the second night. The Golden Circle and glacier snowmobile was a test in endurance but extremely fun and satisfying. And the walking tour was very interesting and a different challenge, as the early morning snow and wind tested our resolve. Our group included a 10-year old, two folks in their 40s, and a 73-year old. All found it to be the trip to fill lifelong goals and memories.

A really enjoyable trip.

A really enjoyable New Year's trip with a very nice mix of different activities.

Jeremy, United Kingdom

An amazing and unique experience.

Our tour was great! Went for our honeymoon and it was everything we wanted. First night we got to see the northern lights which were fantastic! Second day, most certainly our longest, visited several sites (Geysire & Þingvellir) and went snowmobiling on a glacier. Such an amazing and unique experience. The walking tour around Reykjavik was surprisingly educational and our guide pointed out things that we ordinarily would have missed. The NYE dinner was delicious and going out to see the firework displays by (what seemed to be like) everyone was something. Practically had to dodge fireworks! Our 4th day was spent at the Blue Lagoon; perfect after a night of partying! Our last day was nice and relaxing, did some final shopping before we headed off to the airport. Hope to go back & visit Iceland again!
