India claims new first for world's fastest cruise missile

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India said the world's fastest cruise missile passed another key test on Wednesday (May 22) when it successfully hit a land target after being fired from a fighter jet.

India is developing the supersonic BrahMos missile - which has a top speed of 3,450 kilometres per hour - with Russia, and according to media reports wants to soon start selling it abroad.

The missile is one-and-a-half times faster than the old Concorde supersonic jet.

The Indian Defence Ministry said a specially converted Su-30 MKI fighter jet successfully fired the 2.5-tonne missile, which has a range of about 300 kilometres.

"The launch from the aircraft was smooth and the missile followed the desired trajectory before directly hitting the land target," a ministry statement said.

It did not say where the test was staged or give other details apart from saying "very complex" mechanical, electrical and software modifications were made to the Russian-origin fighter jet.

The first test on a sea target was staged in November 2017. India said then it was the first country "to have successfully fired an air launched 2.8 Mach surface attack missile of this category on a sea target".

"The BrahMos missile provides Indian Air Force a much desired capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target at sea or on land with pinpoint accuracy by day or night and in all weather conditions," the ministry said.

India has already ordered sea-launched versions of the missile for its navy, and specialist defence media reports have said the BrahMos could start being introduced to the air force from 2020.

BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia and officials from the enterprise have said at recent international air shows that discussions on sales are being held with a number of countries.

Media reports have said South-east Asian countries have expressed particular interest, which could worry China.

India and Russia are reported to be preparing plans for a longer range version of the missile, which could fly at up to Mach 5, or 6,125 kilometres per hour.

Bramhos is named for the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers of India and Russia, respectively.

BrahMos: The success story of the Indian Cruise Missile

On 11 Jan 2022, the Supersonic BrahMos NV was test fired from Indian Navy Ship, INS Vishakhapatnam, a stealth guided missile destroyer somewhere in Bay of Bengal and precisely hit the designated target almost 300 kms away within 15 minutes of its launch. The prime minister and defence minister have congratulated the Indian Navy for its mission readiness and DRDO for yet another stride towards “Mission Atmanirbhar.”

BrahMos, under Project 10, produced by India is one of the best cruise missiles in the world. It is a medium range, supersonic missile based on Ramjet principle, capable of being launched from Trident modes i.e. Sea, Land and Air platforms. It is a Joint Venture between DRDO and Mashinostroyenyia (NPO) of the Russian Federation. These two organisations have formed BrahMos Aerospace Limited on 12 February 1998 whose headquarter is in New Delhi. The MoU was signed between Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, then DRDO Chairman from India and Russian Deputy Defence Minister N V Mikihilov, who was also head of NPO Mashinostroyenyia. The name BrahMos is a portmanteau, coined from two rivers, Brahmaputra of India and Moskva of Russia. The objective was to design, develop, manufacture and market the world’s best supersonic cruise missile.

The initial investment for the corporation was $250 million shared between India (50.5 %) $126.25 million dollars and Russia (49.5%) $123.75 million.  The founder CEO and Managing Director of the project was Dr. Shivathanu Pillai. Dr. Sudhir Kumar Mishra took over as second CEO in 2014. The present CEO, who took over in 2021, is Dr. Atul Dinkar Rane.

The first facility to be developed was BrahMos Aerospace integration /production centre at Hyderabad in Telangana in 2007 and the second production and testing facility was established at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in 2008.

Initially, till 2008, Russia supplied 65 percent of the BrahMos component including Ramjet Engine and Radar tracker but now India makes 65 percent of Missile parts indigenously. With the BrahMos Manufacturing centre coming up in Lucknow Defence Industrial Corridor in 2021, the indigenous component will rise to almost 90 percent with an Indian made seeker and booster engine being put in place.

It flies at a constant speed and is designed to deliver a conventional/Nuclear warhead over long distance and with high precision. The older version of Cruise missiles like Tomahawk of USA had subsonic speed but the new versions are capable of cruising at supersonic as well as hypersonic speed. The advantage of Cruise missile over Ballistic missile is that as it does low flying it cannot be detected by Radars, Electronic surveillance devices and even AWACs. It has very low Circular Error Probability (CEP), meaning that it is very accurate, precise and with low collateral damage. Interception is very difficult.

The disadvantages are that it cannot carry large war heads and generally the subsonic version has slow flying. Moreover, Cruise missiles cannot have capabilities of long range like Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (5000 Kms plus).

BrahMos 1 was first test fired on 12 June 2001 from Integrated Test range (ITR) Chandipur in vertical configuration. On 14 June 2004 it was fired from Mobile Launcher.  On 5 March 2008, it was launched from INS Rajput and later from INS Ranveer. The BrahMos was then test fired at Pokhran Ranges for summer trials with success. On 5 September 2010, BrahMos created a world record for being the first supersonic cruise missile. It was tested with Indian seeker and propulsion system on 30 September 2019 and extended range version was fired in September 2020. Submarine launch version was successfully test fired on at NSTL underwater pods on 20 March 2013. BrahMos A version was developed in 2016. SU30MKI aircrafts were suitably modified and on 22 November 2017, BrahMos a was successfully launched from SU30MKI and hit the sea based target 500kms away in Bay of Bengal, a record was created by IAF which became the only Air force in world to fire a heavy pay load supersonic cruise missile from a fighter jet. As on date, 40 SU 30mkl have been suitably modified for BrahMos fitment.

Cruise missiles can be divided into three groups as per speed. The first type are subsonic version like AGM 86B, AGM 129, BGM Tomhawk (USA), KH 55, 65, 101 (Russia), G4 (North Korea), Nirbhay (India), C/D10 (China), Popeye Turbo (Israel), Hoveyzeh (Iran). Supersonic version are 3MS4 Sizzler, 3M51, KH15, P500, 700, 800, 1000 (Soviet), AGM69, Regulus 2 (USA), Moynee Portee Air Sol (France), BrahMos B1, B2, B2A (Indo Russian), C101, 301, 803, 805, CX1, YJ 12, 18, 91 (China) The third and most advanced type of Cruise missile is Hypersonic version  which flies at five times the speed of sound ( Mach 5), these are still in development stage. India leads the show with BrahMos 2 already tested (Indo Russian), HDTV scramjet (Indian), AGM183, LRHW still under development with USA, KH47M2, KH90, Zircon still not in service (Russia). The Chinese Hypersonic carrier is in trial mode only.

BrahMos ll will be a hypersonic version of Indian Cruise missile. The speed already tested is almost Mach 8, the fastest in the world. Trials are in progress. BrahMos ll is likely to be in service in 2024. Yet another version under development is BrahMos NG (Next Generation) variant. It will be lighter by half, smart with Artificial intelligence, faster Mach 7 to 8 and more lethal and accurate. SU 30 mk 1 will be able to carry four missiles and also can be fitted on Rafale and Tejas Mk IA and ll .The new production centre spread over 200 acres was inaugurated on 26 December 20201and will be operational by December 2024.

BrahMos Aerospace has developed a Export version with limited range to be supplied to friendly nations. The cost per unit is 2.75 million dollars. The countries like Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa, Oman, Chile, Brazil, Indonesia have shown interest in purchase of BrahMos weapon system. The deal with Vietnam and Philippines is in final stages. Indian Govt has agreed for line of credit to Vietnam and Philippines. With BrahMos, India which was largely known as heavy importer country of Defence equipment will transform in to a defence hardware exporting Nation.

BrahMos – Philippines deal becomes official

Brahmos aerospace private limited signed a contract with the department of national defence of the republic of philippines on january 28, 2022 for the supply of shore based anti-ship missile systems..

A ceremonial contract signing for the Shore-based Anti-ship Missile System acquisition project for the Philippine Navy worth Php 18.9 Billion from Brahmos Aerospace was held today at the Department of National Defense.

Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana signed on behalf of the DND, while its Director-General, Mr, Atul Dinkar Rane, signed for Brahmos Aerospace. Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Shambhu Kumaran was present to physically represent the Indian side in the event.

First conceptualized in 2017, the Philippines will acquire three (3) batteries.

“Equipping our Navy with this vital asset is imperative as the Philippines continues to protect the integrity of its territory and defend its national interests. As the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles, the Brahmos Missiles will provide deterrence against any attempt to undermine our sovereignty and sovereign rights, especially in the West Philippine Sea.” Delfin Negrillo Lorenzana, Philippines Defense Secretary

Naval News Comment:

The Philippines have shown interest in the purchase of the BrahMos since 2016. It was reported that negotiations were underway since 2019 regarding the procurement of two mobile batteries for the Philippine Army under the Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) program.

On March 2, 2021,  the Philippines and India signed a government-to-government agreement  on defense equipment procurement, paving the way for the sale of the missile to the Philippines.

On January 12, 2022, the Philippines Department of National Defense issued a notice of award indicating the government’s approval to procure the BrahMos shore-based anti-ship missile system from India.

Following today’s signing ceremony, the Philippines became the BrahMos missile’s first export customer. The contract, according to India’s DRDO, is a major step forward in the Government of India’s strategy of supporting responsible defense exports.

The Philippines are worried about the dominance of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy), which controls many islets in the region. The Brahmos procurement would offer the Philippines a way to deter China’s expansionism and somewhat restore the military balance between the two countries.

About Brahmos

The BrahMos is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can target ship and land targets and can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land. It is designed by Brahmos Aerospace, a joint venture between the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The baseline Brahmos ground-launched cruise missile (GLCM) has a launch range of approximately 290 km (180 miles) and a speed of Mach 2.8-3.0. In 2016, India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and got the right to develop cruise missiles with extended launch ranges for the national armed forces. In March 2017, the Indian defense industry tested an extended-range variant of the missile known as Brahmos-ER (ER for Extended Range), which was reported to be able to hit targets at a distance of approximately 400 km.

BrahMos-II is a hypersonic cruise missile currently under development and is estimated to have a range of 600 km and a speed of Mach 8. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) is a mini version based on the existing BrahMos. While it has a similar 290 km range and Mach 3.5 speed, it is much smaller to be able to be deployed from Indian Air Force aircraft such as Mig-29K, HAL Tejas, or Dassault Rafale.

India is developing the supersonic BrahMos missile - which has a top speed of 3,450 kilometres (2,140 miles) per hour - with Russia, and according to media reports wants to soon start selling it abroad. The missile is one-and-a-half times faster than the old Concorde supersonic jet.

The Indian defence ministry said a specially converted Su-30 MKI fighter jet successfully fired the 2.5-tonne missile, which has a range of about 300 kilometres (185 miles). ‘The launch from the aircraft was smooth and the missile followed the desired trajectory before directly hitting the land target,’ a ministry statement said.

It did not say where the test was staged or give other details apart from saying ‘very complex’ mechanical, electrical and software modifications were made to the Russian-origin fighter jet.

The first test on a sea target was staged in November 2017.

India said then it was the first country ‘to have successfully fired an air launched 2.8 Mach surface attack missile of this category on a sea target’.

‘The BrahMos missile provides Indian Air Force a much-desired capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target at sea or on land with pinpoint accuracy by day or night and in all weather conditions,’ the ministry said.

India has already ordered sea-launched versions of the missile for its navy, and specialist defence media reports have said the BrahMos could start being introduced to the air force from 2020. BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia and officials from the enterprise have said at recent international air shows that discussions on sales are being held with a number of countries.

Media reports have said Southeast Asian countries have expressed particular interest, which could worry China.

India and Russia are reported to be preparing plans for a longer-range version of the missile which could fly at up to Mach 5, or 6,125 kilometres (3,800 miles) per hour.

BrahMos is named for the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers of India and Russia respectively.

Tangled in Steel With No Way Out: How the Crew Stuck in Baltimore Is Faring

Twenty-two seafarers from India find themselves not only trapped in the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, but also in an unexpected spotlight.

Even from miles away, the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is a jarring visual: Chunks of steel jut above the water like metallic icebergs. Twisted gray beams protrude in crooked positions. From a park near Fort McHenry, visitors can see the giant cargo ship that struck the bridge and remains lodged in the wreckage.

Less visible, however, are the 22 crew members from India who have remained on the ship, named the Dali, since the disaster on Tuesday.

Little is publicly known about them other than that they are seafarers who embarked on a journey aboard the 985-foot-long cargo ship that was on its way to Sri Lanka, carrying 4,700 shipping containers, when it lost power and struck the Key Bridge, causing the structure to collapse.

Since the accident, which killed six construction workers, the crew members have found themselves in an unexpected spotlight. While keeping the ship operable, they are answering a deluge of questions from officials investigating the nighttime catastrophe, as the evidence of what occurred lies around them in mangled ruins stretching across the bow and deck.

While officials investigate what could have caused the tragedy, another question has emerged this week: What could the crew members, who have limited access to the outside world, be going through right now?

“They must feel this weight of responsibility that they couldn’t stop it from happening,” said Joshua Messick, the executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center , a religious nonprofit that seeks to protect the rights of mariners.

Even so, officials have praised the crew’s swift mayday message that was transmitted over the radio as the ship lost power on Tuesday. Before the Dali struck the bridge, traveling at a rapid eight knots, the mayday call helped police officers stop traffic from heading onto the bridge, most likely saving many lives, the authorities said. A local harbor pilot with more than 10 years of experience was onboard, as well as an apprentice pilot in training.

As the ship remains stuck in the Port of Baltimore, where it may remain for weeks, the lives of the crew members have entered an uncertain phase. But one thing is certain: They will no longer cruise through the sea around South Africa toward their destination in Sri Lanka anytime soon.

But they are not going to imminently dock at the port either, as they must wait for enough debris to be cleared to free the ship and reopen the channel to one of the busiest ports in the United States. On Saturday, the governor of Maryland said officials planned to remove the first piece of the debris.

So, for now, crew members are most likely working a grueling schedule to maintain the ship that is similar to the one they would be if they were out at sea. The difference, though, is that they are in an immobile state as the eyes of the world fixate on them, experts said.

“The captain of the vessel and the crew have a duty to the ship,” said Stephen Frailey, a partner at Pacific Maritime Group, which helps with marine salvage and wreck removal.

According to Chris James, who works for a consulting firm assisting the ship’s management company, Synergy Marine, the crew members have ample supplies of food and water, as well as plenty of fuel to keep the generators going. Indeed, when Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, went onboard the ship this week, she observed the cook cooking. “It smelled very good,” she said.

But there is still no exact timeline for when the ship might be extracted from the wreckage, Mr. James said. Once the N.T.S.B. and the Coast Guard finish their investigations, he said, “we’ll look at potentially swapping the crew out and getting them home.”

India, the home country of the crew members, is one of the world’s largest hubs for seafarers, according to John A. Konrad, a ship captain and the chief executive of gCaptain, a maritime and offshore industry news website. Though Indian captains and engineers are paid less than their American counterparts, Mr. Konrad said, they make a decent living when they work for three or more months out of the year at sea.

Working on a cargo ship, he said, is a 24-hour ordeal with no weekends off: Every day, decks are checked for maintenance and safety, cooks and cleaners serve the other members, and workers in the engine room keep things on track.

Cargo ship crew members do have some leisurely activities available to them onboard, though, such as video game breaks in cabins, workouts in gyms, table tennis sessions and movie nights. The Dali crew has at least a TV, magazines and books onboard, said Andrew Middleton, who runs Apostleship of the Sea, a program that ministers to sailors coming through the port.

Clistan Joy Sequeira, an Indian seafarer who was not on the Dali but who docked in Baltimore from another cargo ship on Friday, said in an interview that he feared the repercussions that the bridge collapse could have on his industry and his country.

“I’m scared that because this crew is Indian, our international image will suffer,” said Mr. Sequeira, 31. “Maybe we lose jobs.”

Some in Baltimore’s port community have had some contact with the Dali crew, albeit brief, through third parties or WhatsApp. Mr. Messick said he sent the crew two Wi-Fi hot spots on Friday because they did not have internet onboard.

Mr. Middleton said he had been keeping in touch with two crew members, reminding them that “we’re here for them.”

“When I’ve asked how they’re doing, their answers range from ‘good’ to ‘great,’” he said. “So, by their own accounts, they’re OK.”

Mr. Messick said he had also sent a care package to the crew through a salvage company helping with operations. In the package were candy, home-baked muffins from a concerned local and thank-you cards from children.

With so many questions still unanswered about the crew members’ next steps, Mr. Messick said he was eager to provide them with trauma care and emotional support. On Friday, he wrote a letter to the captain, which was delivered by another vessel.

“We’re here to support you,” it read.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Global Indian Festival 2024 (GIF 2024) is targeting up to 150,000 visitors at its 19th edition of 'All Things India'.

Founder and CEO of Agenda Suria Communications Sdn Bhd as the organiser of the carnival, Jaggarao Simancha said the exhibition, which started on Wednesday (April 10) and runs until Sunday (April 14), aims to make Malaysia a hub to promote Indian culture in the region.

"Taking a closer look at this exhibition, since 2003, the average attendance of visitors is approximately five million people, while the number of traders reaches three thousand people. This festival not only attracts the interest of the Indian community, but also Malays, Chinese, and foreign tourists.

"This exhibition not only aims to showcase the culture of the Indian community (such as clothing, food, and dance) but also provides a platform for traders from various backgrounds, including the Indian community and other nationalities, to network and prosper," he said.

He said this after the GIF 2024 inauguration ceremony which was officiated by Klang MP V. Ganabatirau at Midvalley Megamall here on Thursday (April 12).

At this year's festival, more than 120 vendors offer a variety of Indian apparel and food, as well as a host of activities for visitors to engage in.

In the meantime, for Ismail Khan Ahmad Khan, 69 was excited to attend the exhibition while describing the items on sale as cheap and unique.

"I never miss coming to this exhibition every year. Looking at the items sold, they are affordable and the clothing designs are unique and change every year.

"At the same time, I also get to experience the Indian culture more closely," he said.

Meanwhile for Indian citizen Nisha Tated, 49 admits that exhibitions like this somewhat cure her longing for her motherland.

"I feel like I'm in Little India when I come to this festival. I see a lot of Indian society, food like panipuri (a common street food in the Indian subcontinent) and sweets similar to those in India. I like it," said Nisha who works as a Hindi language teacher. - Bernama

Tensions in the Middle East are continuing to increase this evening, as the US moves assets in the region to better protect its forces and bolster regional deterrence. 

It comes amid the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria. 

Earlier, Joe Biden was asked what his message was to Iran.

More details now on the news we brought you earlier about that US military moving assets in the Middle East. 

An American defence official told Sky News the move was being made to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase protection of US forces in the region. 

Now, our US partner NBC News has reported most of the assets involved are already deployed in the area and just moving around. 

Officials said moves were being made to be better positioned for defence of Israel and US assets and in case the US needs to respond to whatever Iran does. 

The specific assets being moved in the region have not been identified. 

Germany has advised it citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. 

The German foreign offices warned there was a risk of sudden escalation in Tehran's situation with Israel and also of arbitrary arrest in the country. 

"In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation," it wrote in a travel warning. 

"It cannot be excluded that air, land and sea transport routes could be affected." 

It said Germans were at "concrete risk" of being arrested, interrogated and being given long prison sentences. 

"Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk," it added. 

Three Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank today in military raids and settler rampage. 

Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, in raids. 

While, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least one person was killed in an Israeli settler rampage near Ramallah.

The Israeli military said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, who has been described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

It said a number of weapons and military-style equipment, including automatic rifles were found in his vehicle.

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed Al Qassam Brigades.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Far'a refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member. 

The military said forces carrying out the operation opened fire on Palestinians who threw explosive devices and killed one man it said was attempting to attack them.

Israel has stepped up military raids in the West Bank since launching its operation in Gaza. 

Joe Biden has reiterated US support for Israel, saying his administration is "devoted" to its defence. 

The US president said his message to Iran, which has threatened to take military action against Israel, was simply "don't". 

"We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he said. 

His comments come after a US defence official confirmed to Sky News that "additional assets" were being moved to the Middle East to "bolster regional deterrence efforts". 

Iran has threatened to attack Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria last week.

Israel has been widely blamed for the attack, but has not commented on it publicly. 

Around 40 rocket launches have been identified crossing from Lebanon, the Israeli military has said. 

In a Telegram post, the Israel Defence Forces said some rockets were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas. 

It also confirmed two Hezbollah explosive drones that had entered Israeli territory from Lebanon had been intercepted. 

"Over the last few hours, the IDF struck in a number of locations in southern Lebanon in order to remove a threat," it added. 

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have regularly exchanged fire across the border since the war in Gaza erupted last year. 

Throughout the day, we have been reporting on the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel. 

The US has warned the threat is "real" and "viable" and, in the last few moments, an American defence official has confirmed "additional assets" are being moved to the Middle East as a result. 

Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has said it is "quite likely" Iran will attack, and the US has been given signals all day that it could be "imminent". 

He added he is "fairly sure" Iran will not let go of the deadly strike on its embassy in Syria - which is what sparked the threat of an attack in the first place. 

"The United States is pretty clear now that something is about to happen, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but it won't be much further than that, and it might be quite big," Prof Clarke said.

He explained that the US has said it is more likely Iran will launch a direct attack on Israel, and the Iranians do have missiles with the capability to do so.

Israel has made it very clear it will hit back if Iran decides to attack, and Prof Clarke said some Israelis would "almost like that to happen" so they could attack some of Iran's nuclear facilities.

The US is "moving additional assets" to the Middle East, a defence official has told Sky News. 

The move will "bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces", the official said. 

Our US correspondent Mark Stone said no further details have been provided. 

"That means more military hardware is being moved or will be moved to the region to do two things - try to deter Iran from taking any massive action and also to protect existing American forces that are in the region," he said. 

"I think the consensus among experts is that the Iranian will respond, but they will almost certainly respond against Israel directly rather than any American military in the region. 

"Nevertheless, what that response will look like and what it will mean in terms of an Israeli response, we don't know yet." 

The announcement comes after the White House said it changed its force posture in the region amid threats of an Iranian attack on Israel. 

Fears of an escalating situation in the Middle East have grown in recent days after Iran threatened to attack Israel. 

But how is Iran involved in the conflict - and why is it threatening to attack Israel? 

Firstly, Iran is the biggest backer of Hamas, having provided weapons and training to the militant group in previous years. 

It also backs Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen - both of which have been involved in attacks on Israel since the war in Gaza erupted last year. 

Historically, Israel and Iran have been arch enemies, with both countries allegedly behind a long series of attacks on each other's interests. 

Tensions between the two nations have been increasingly stretched since Israel entered Gaza following the 7 October Hamas attacks. 

But, they became incredibly high last week after an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria. 

That's why Iran is threatening to attack Israel. 

Two generals and seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were killed in the strike in Damascus, which Tehran has blamed on Israel. 

The US military has said it also believes Israel was behind the attack. 

However, Israel has not publicly commented on the airstrike. 

Iran has been warned by the US not to use the embassy attack as a pretext to escalate the situation in the region.
