The divine MSC Divina is the only ship at sea with a suite designed by Sophia Loren, legendary Italian actress and the ship’s godmother. Delicious cuisine is served at every meal, from the laid back Sacramento Tex Mex restaurant to the elegant Black Crab restaurant. The 9 best Bahamas cruises for every type of traveler

Melinda Crow

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don't regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don't worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Whether you're looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, "Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy's Ship Show." There's a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you'll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it's also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas from Miami

italian cruise ship to bahamas

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean 's massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It's loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it's a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

italian cruise ship to bahamas

When Royal Caribbean' s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas' inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go? Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children's programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando's Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you'll also find your spot on board. From the "Star Wars"-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including "Star Wars" and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It's light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children's program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line's last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice Class ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship's power grid. You'll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn't draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady from Miami

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It's the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You'll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and '80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you're easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line's private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau's Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line's Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line's "freestyle cruising" mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

Related: Best time to cruise to the Bahamas

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

italian cruise ship to bahamas

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It's currently Carnival's oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau's iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival's private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city's historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don't care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they're ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

italian cruise ship to bahamas

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line's fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival's signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola "sailing" down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they've been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It's almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can't quite get enough of — whether it's beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. The key is identifying the cruise that fits your style, preferred activities and vacation budget.

Carnival's new ship offers Italian-style cruising

italian cruise ship to bahamas

You don’t have to go to Italy to get a taste of Venice.

Carnival Cruise Line has added a new ship to its fleet, Carnival Venezia, which puts an Italian twist on the “fun ship.” The ship departed on its first sailing from the U.S. on Thursday, a four-day round-trip cruise from its New York City homeport to Bermuda.

The ship originally debuted as part of Costa Cruises – also part of Carnival Corp. – in 2019 to serve China, but with the country’s international cruise market dormant in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , the vessel was rehomed.

Venezia is the first vessel in a new concept, Carnival Fun Italian Style, and marks a stylistic departure for the line, with interiors inspired by its namesake city.

“We're leaning into Italy and saying this is like our adopted daughter,” Christine Duffy, Carnival’s president, told USA TODAY.

A second former Costa ship, Carnival Firenze, will also begin sailing for the line in 2024.

Where will Carnival Venezia sail?

The ship, which can accommodate nearly 5,000 guests, will spend the summer sailing four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises to Bermuda, the Caribbean, New England and Canada. In September, Venezia will start sailing between eight and 12-day itineraries to the Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean and Southern Caribbean, with select sailings also including a stop in Miami.

What can guests expect from Carnival Venezia?

The ship strikes a balance between its Italian theme and the brand’s signature features guests know. Venezia underwent renovations in the spring, keeping venues like the ship’s gelato bar – which became part of the line’s JavaBlue Cafe – in place while adding some entirely new elements and Carnival-specific touches.

The line introduced Il Viaggio, a new specialty restaurant serving cuisine from various regions of Italy, as well as Amari – a venue similar to Alchemy Bar on other Carnival ships – which serves drinks with a range of Italian liqueurs and bitters. The ship also hosts a new Italian street party with live music and street food at the ship’s Lido pool.

Even Guy Fieri’s Carnival mainstay, Guy’s Burger Joint, returned with a twist: on Venezia, the casual eatery features special menu items like a burger with toppings including fresh mozzarella, diced tomato, balsamic and fried basil. Other familiar venues include the steakhouse Fahrenheit 555, Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki.

The ship also has close to 2,000 staterooms, a bocce ball court (a first for the line), water park, gym, spa, and more, with details throughout that remind guests they are not on just any Carnival vessel: arches and faux-greenery covered columns abound at the Lido pool, for instance, and the Venetian gondola inside the Canal Grande restaurant is hard to miss.

“I think people see this as a more elevated, elegant ship,” Duffy said.

How much does Carnival Venezia cost?

A nine-day round-trip cruise from New York to the Bahamas departing on Feb. 2, 2024, starts at $449 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival's website , though prices vary by itinerary, stateroom, and other factors. The fare includes most food, drinks like iced tea and regular coffee and more.

Side by side of Carnival Venezia.

Never underestimate the value of a cruise from a home port.

Not only does it eliminate the fatigue of a flight and the need to arrive a day early for, can we just say, regular-size toiletries and a bottle of wine in the carry-on.

Add the arrival of a new ship, and there’s twice the cause for celebration. Carnival has this covered with the launch this June of its snazzy ship Carnival Venezia , now sailing from the Manhattan cruise terminal.

The 15-deck, 4,977-guest-capacity Venezia was originally part of the Costa Cruises line, the Italian company that was purchased by Carnival in 1997 (and, ahem, later infamous for the Costa Concordia capsize in 2012).

Built in 2019 with the intention of sailing the China seas, she was transferred from the Costa line to Carnival’s bucket in March and is now taking off on her inaugural cruises to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Florida, New England and Canada.

Exterior of the Venezia ship docked at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

Soon to be joined by sister ship Firenze, which will be based in LA, the company is placing the ships as a sub-brand called “Carnival Fun Italian Style.” As the name suggests, there’s Italian theming throughout, with gold romanesque pillars, lots of green and red, and generous usage of the word “ciao.”

There’s even a genuine gondola (one of only 500 in the world, we’re told) parked outside the Canal Grand main restaurant for that now-compulsory Instagram moment. (And, in keeping with the theme, rather than the customary godmother, the ship was even dedicated by a godfather — Jay Leno, in case you were wondering.)

There’s no signature whale tail on the ship, but there is a big overstamp of everything you already know about Carnival — lots of RelayComp-Black font, “art” sales and gargantuan lines for karaoke and the omnipresent Guy Fieri burger bar. Added to this, though, is an airy feel to the ship, with subtle decor touches like Murano glass ornaments, beachy color palettes in the nicely appointed rooms and the classy Frizzante bar for your prosecco fix.

Interior of the ship's casino space.

Venezia also features the unique-to-this-ship restaurant, Il Viaggio (“the voyage”). Sporting stylish decor in white and gold, its goal is to serve authentic dishes from various culinary regions of Italy. Expect dishes like pollo parmigiana pizza from Lombardy, or mile-high gelato pie from Tuscany. Your waistline won’t thank you, but your taste buds will.

In fact, worthy of note (and, perhaps, because the company’s chief culinary officer is Emeril Lagasse) you’re not going to be disappointed in any of the food and beverage options, all of which are fresh and varied — an important plus on any cruise.

Interestingly, differences in the Chinese market for which the ship was designed included a desire for more shops and casinos at the cost of less pools and dining. So while Venezia has been re-jiggered to include all the Carnival Horizon-class upgraded dining, entertainment options and adults-only Serenity deck, they couldn’t fix everything. So, there’s only a small pool at the front and another in the center of the ship, and on a full cruise it’s standing room only.

Interior of a bar area on the ship.

However, the main Lido pool has a retractable roof, nicely tall and non-confining. Surrounded by roomy lounging areas and bars in a design inspired by the Italian Riviera, it’s a comfortable spot that comes in handy when the rain comes in sideways.

For kids, there’s also the splash pool and well-attended sports areas, as well as a kids club. An afternoon G-rated comedy show at Punchlines is a nice touch, too.

The extra retail space leaves room for some Italian finery — think Gucci, Fendi and Bulgari. I’m not sure who, on a cruise, is looking for “lightly used” leather handbags, but they’re here at What Goes Around Comes Around, and they’re very nice.

Aerial shot of the Carnival Venezia in the waters of NYC at night.

Carnival has positioned itself with low-entry prices, so you’re looking at $559 per person for the long weekend cruise from New York to Bermuda, which we took — worth the price of entry just to sail past Lady Liberty at sunset. Little wonder that our cruise was sold out and boasted its fair share of birthday bashes and bachelorette parties.

Just one other thing: Don’t think about bringing your weed. It might be legal in this home port, but it’s not allowed on board and anyway, there’s a $500 fine for any illicit smoking or vaping. This didn’t seem to stop some of our neighbors, but there is a sniffer dog on board, so, just don’t.

Venezia will sail 22 itineraries from New York now through winter 2024, ranging from 4 to 15 days to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Florida, New England and Canada. Prices start at $439 per person. For more information visit Carnival.com.

Including some of “Italia Lines” earlier Liners in brief

With Reuben Goossens

Maritime Historian, Cruise‘n’Ship Reviewer, Author and Lecturer

Commenced in the Passenger Shipping & Cruise Industry in 1960

Introduction:

The Italian Line like so many of its competitor’s lost most of its passenger liners during World War II, including two of their prestigious luxury liners the superb S.S. Rex as well as the magnificent S.S. Conte di Savoia .

Above the luxurious S.S. Rex and below the S.S. Conte di Savoia , both commenced service in 1932

The luxurious S.S. Conte di Savoia

But the liners that did somehow manage to survive the war, mostly dated from the 1920’s and these ships by the late 1940’s were due to be replaced.

Thankfully, in 1949 the Italian Line received special subsidies from the Italian government for them to construct two new liners for their Trans-Atlantic service between Italy and the United States . The first of these ships was delivered in 1953 being the S.S.   Andrea Doria , and she was followed the very next year by the S.S. Cristoforo Colombo . Together these two liners re-established the Italian Line’s prestige Trans-Atlantic service with two of the finest liners to serve on the respective service.

Here we see the elegant S.S. Andrea Doria

This is the slightly newer sister the S.S. Cristoforo Colombo

However, as history proved, the  Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish American Line M.S. Stockholm and the great Italian liner sank due to the collision, whilst the much smaller Stockholm suffered damage to her bow. The Stockholm did assist and she was able to rescue many passengers from the Andrea Doria . The much loved and admired Andrea Doria  sank after just three years of service on July 25, 1956 which was a great loss to the company, besides the Italian Line was left to pay the full cost of their lost ship, due to negligence on the bridge that night, whereas the Stockholm only had to pay for their bow repairs. Sadly the vast majority of the blame was laid on the Andrea Doria , which was tragic for the Italian Line had a long record of excellent maritime safety!

A New Ship in Planning:

But with the tragic loss of the Andrea Doria , the Italian Line was now short of a ship and they desperately required a new liner to join S.S. Cristoforo Colombo on their Trans-Atlantic service.

However, amongst the board of directors of the Italian Line there was considerable turmoil regarding the collision and the ensuing court case, etc. But thankfully there was a part of the company that commenced to work on plans for a new ship that was so urgently needed to replace the lost ship.

Maritime architects decided to use the very same hull design as that of the SS Andrea Doria , but adapt it, and update it into a larger design for the new ship. The Andrea Doria was 29,083 GRT and 701 ft long and 90 ft wide, whilst the design of the new liner would be 33,340 GRT and 763.12 ft long and 92.19 ft wide.

This silhouette was a first look of what the ship would look like

Italian Line’s released this Leonardo da Vinci brochure in 1960 and considering the ship was named

after one Italy ’s greatest innovators ever, it was obvious the new liner would represent the very best in INNOVATION!

This is the cover of the brochure but sadly I do not have its interior

Brochure cover provided by Jason Macinnes , Scotland

As plans progressed many innovations were made for the new liner, as she would incorporate very high standards and many fully upgraded safety features, and as the plans for the new ship came towards a conclusion, there was no doubt at all that she would be one of the most advanced liners of her time!

New safety features included:

The liner would have lifeboat davits that would be capable of launching lifeboats against a 25 degree list, as well as lifeboats would be fully motorised, also her watertight bulkheads would be extended. Another astonishing innovation was, that her engine rooms would be separated into two compartments one located forward and one just aft, with each engine driving its own propeller and thus being capable of powering the ship independently from the other. Another great innovation was, considering the Andrea Doria was not known for her stability, the new ship would be provided with not just the usual two stabilizer fins, but four “Denny Brown” stabilizers fins.

There were a good number of other notable features and innovations such as; an Infrared-heated swimming pool in First Class, all First Class and Cabin Class cabins, as well as 80% of Tourist-Class cabins were provided with private facilities, and the ship would be fully air-conditioned. Whilst the Andrea Doria and her newer sister had three electric cranes located on their aft decks, servicing their holds there, the new ship would be completely free of any cranes, thus providing spacious Lido Decks with fine Swimming Pools and Sun Decks.

But I left one thing out, as they say the “Big Daddy” of the story, for the Leonardo would be given one of the most unusual features in passenger liner history. The truth is that provisions were made to convert the ship in due course to operate on Nuclear Power whenever it should become available. We know that the American “ State Maine Lines” built the N.S. Savannah being the world’s first nuclear powered Passenger-Cargo liner, and she commenced her maiden voyage on August 20, 1962. But, although she did have passengers, but sadly she was seldom booked to capacity, due to many people being fearful of being exposed to radiation, etc, and thus this magnificent looking ship proved to be a complete failure. In due course she operated as a cargo ship and finally she became a stationary museum, and in this role she has been more successful than she ever was as an operational passenger ship!

N.S. Savanna seen arriving at   Seattle   in 1962 for the World Fair

Construction & Launching:

The famed shipbuilder “ Ansaldo Sestri Ponete ” of  Genoa , which commenced ship building in 1815, was given the contract in 1958 to build the ship that would be named later at her launching “ Leonardo da Vinci ”. She was laid down in Yard 1550, and as work commenced it did not take too long before her hull stood tall.

With her hull completed, the great new liner is seen a little over a month prior to her launching

Then came a big day for this fine new ship, for on Sunday December 7, 1958 she was launched and officially named “Leonardo da Vinci” by Mrs. Carla Gronchi , the wife of Giovanni Gronchi , being the President of the Italian Republic . and the Leonardo da Vinci gently slid down into the water and was taken into tow to Ansaldo’s fit-out berth to be completed.

Leonardo da Vinci is seen during her triumphant launching on December 7, 1958

The Italian Line commenced a promotional opportunity and as they had built a perfect scale model of their new liner the Leonardo da Vinci , it received a popular viewing Trieste in April 1960.

Here we see a huge model of the Leonardo da Vinci at the Milan Fair in April 1960 and the model reveals her beautifully shaped bulbous bow

On Thursday May 19, 1960, S.S. Leonardo da Vinci undertook her Deep Sea Speed Trials which she did with great success, at first she reached a top speed of 25.3 knots and then on her next run she achieved a remarkable 26 knots. However whilst on her Trans-Atlantic services, she would usually operate at a service speed of around 23 knots.

Looking simply sublime, like a perfectly polished gem the S.S. Leonardo da Vinci was delivered early to her owners in Genoa in June 1960 and there she was made ready for a short “shake-down cruise” which departed Genoa on June 17, this gave the crew the opportunity to get used to the new ships and the surroundings as she was quite different to their previous liners. The cruise went well, and upon her return the media on board gave her a stunning review! Now she was ready for her official maiden voyage to New York . But let us first take a closer look at this amazing ship, her excellent features and one that was not that great, which follows next.

As was discovered during her sea trials, sadly just like the S.S. Andrea Doria  and  Cristoforo Colombo, the Leonardo da Vinci, even with her four stabilizer fins, she still proved to be prone to instability in rough weather, and this was due entirely to her hull design. The main problem being is that her designers took Andrea Doria hull design and simply stretched and widened it, but somehow this really did not work for a larger version and it affected her stability. Thus it was decided to fit 3,000 metric tons of iron onto the bottom of her hull, and it was stated that this was done to “improve her stability”. However, this caused a huge problem, for it now made; “The Leonardo da Vinci excessively heavy for the power of her engines” and sadly this led to fuel costs for her being extremely expensive, especially during a time of a fuel crisis, and fuel costs would obviously affect her eventual future!

Her Interiors

Due to the possible conversion for the ship to operate in the future on nuclear power, the   Leonardo da Vinci   had what would be known as a rather different interior layout to the majority of passenger liners. The reason being, that the location for the future reactor was located amidships, thus in and around the liner’s steam turbine power plant. Therefore it was necessary to locate the dining rooms and galleys one deck higher than they had been on the Andrea Doria and Cristoforo Colombo , thus it was separated from the ship's main working area. There are no passenger hallways that pass the area that is reserved for a reactor, meaning that the forward and aft passenger sections of the lower decks were complexly separated from each other. Mind you, that would also be the case in a good number of other ships in due course that had no thoughts of a reactor, there it was just the fact that the engine room separated forward from aft, and it was no big deal!

In addition she became the first Italian liner to be fitted with an efficient water desalination plant with a capacity of over 184,000 gallons of fresh water per day. She also had two garages for 50 cars; one the First Class garage had a fold down door and cars could just drive on and off.

Some of the ships thirty Lounges, Dining Rooms and other public spaces on board were designed by several famed Italian designers, which included Vincenzo Monaco   and   Amedeo Luccichenti   and these two men were responsible for the sublime Ballroom and Cocktail Bar, whilst other amazing designers worked on the rest of the venues. Closed-circuit Televisions were located in all the Main Lounges. The Leonardo da Vinci had a total of 524 cabins, accommodating 1,326 passengers in her three classes, First, Cabin and Tourist-Class, all being exceptionally fitted out according to their class.

The Italian Line published a brochure full of artist impressions long before the completion of the ship, and this brochure and a later one from 1966 are shown in full on Page Two. Her Deck Plan will be shown on Page Three.

And here is the actual elegant First Class Restaurant, featuring a wall of fine timbers and four stunning sculptures

The liner’s namesake is seen here in the First Class Lobby, where he is honoured by a large hammered silver relief

portrait of Leonardo da Vinci by famed Italian artist & sculptor Renato Marino Mazzacurati (1907 - 1969)

The exterior design of the   Leonardo da Vinci   was somewhat similar to that of her two earlier sisters, but she was 63 ft longer and a good 2 ft wider, in addition she had a larger forward as well as an aft   superstructure. The ships funnel was also beautifully re-shaped into a more modern shapely funnel, as well as being somewhat taller and also having a small smoke deflector fin.

The Leonardo had the same livery as the Andrea Doria and the Cristoforo Colombo having a perfectly painted black hull with a thin white band painted two-thirds of the way up from the bottom of the black-painted area.

There is no doubt externally, and I do mean visually, S.S. Leonardo da Vinci was a perfectly balanced looking liner, just simple perfection to behold at sea, be it back then and honestly she would still be today!

But sadly, her machinery was under powered and thus it was difficult to cope with the ships very poor underwater hull design and all that iron that had to be fitted to keep her stable, thus fuel cost added up to a fortune to operate her, and tragically that was the ships main downfall and a big problem. Due to the aforementioned this wonderful ship as far as passengers were concerned, her days were considerably short for such a sizable liner serving the Italian Line for she only served a total of 17 years, and then she was laid up several times for a good number of years. Such a magnificent looking ship, with interiors fit for an Emperor, she certainly deserved much better!

Maiden Voyage:

On June 30, 1960, under the command of the company’s Senior Captain; Commander Armando Pinelli S.S.   Leonardo da Vinci  departed Genoa on her maiden voyage. She first headed for Cannes where she arrived later on that day. She the arrived at Naples on July 1, and Gibraltar on July 3, after which she headed directly for New York where she arrived July 9. Upon arrival in the “Big Apple” S.S. Leonardo da Vinci received a Grand Welcome, which new liners were traditionally given as they arrived in the City on their Maiden arrival.

An Italian Line postcard of Leonardo da Vinci ’s maiden arrival in New York City

Not long after the Leonardo entered the Trans-Atlantic service, amazingly the Italian Line announced that by 1965 that their new ship would be refitted to operate on nuclear power. But as we know, that never came about, and to be honest it was just as well, for all too soon big changes were going to happen.

S.S. Leonardo da Vinci (right) and Cristoforo Colombo are seen together at Genoa . Amazingly the

Cristoforo Colombo seems to look larger than the Leonardo da Vinci , but that is an allusion.

It had already been decided by the Italian Line that the  Leonardo da Vinci would be replaced on the North Atlantic service by their two brand new liners the  S.S.   Michelangelo  and  S.S.   Raffaello mid 1965. Thus the Leonardo da Vinci continued on her regular North Atlantic service from Genoa to New York until July 1965.

When she completed her Trans-Atlantic services in July 1965, she commenced to operate a new service and she departed on her new Trans-Atlantic service, but now from Naples to New York , with her first departure from Naples being on July 19, 1965, however, by the end of the year she would return to cruise duties.

S.S. Leonardo da Vinci is seen at Naples during her 1965 Trans-Atlantic service to New York , until she was called up for refurbishment in 1966

Leonardo da Vinci commenced cruises around the Mediterranean , however the Italian Line decide that some cabins in Tourist-Class were not up to standard for cruise duties, as the cabins in question did not have private facilities. Therefore it was decided to keep those accommodations closed during her cruise services. This obviously would have an effect, for she would be cruising with minus 230 passengers than her usual capacity, making a dent in the profitability, considering her high fuel costs.

However Italian Line decided to schedule S.S. Leonardo da Vinci on one of the most ambitious cruises ever, and would be a 42-day extensive 21 ports and 14 Countries voyage, being promoted by Italian Line as the “Gala Cruise.” The itinerary for this amazing cruise was as follows:

March 5, 1966 , depart New York, and head for the following ports, Tenerife, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Bizerte, Palermo, Istanbul, Rhodes, Alexandra, Port Said, Beirut, Haifa, Piraeus, Kotos , Budva , Naples, Genoa, Cannes, Malaga, Algeciras, Madeira, Bermuda, arrive New York on April 16 .

A New Look S.S.   Leonardo da Vinci :

Then in mid 1966 the Italian Line decided that they would bring the Leonardo da Vinci in line with the Company’s new livery introduced earlier, as seen on their two newest liners. She would now be painted all white, with her hull given green boot topping and a longitudinal thin green ribbon.

Although many preferred the more classic look on her as they considered the black hull a more elegant look. However, in general cruise ships had become what was known at that time, as the “cruising white ships”, therefore they were all becoming, what they call part of the “In-Thing”.

With the makeover as well as an interior refit, cruise fares could be increased accordingly considering she was considered as a luxury cruise ship! And soon she commenced on her cruise schedule and operated a good number of them, yet she still continued regular Trans-Atlantic liner voyages during the summer months. Cruises were becoming more and more popular and in general they were operated during the cooler (winter) months as they offered an escape to warmer climates!

An Italian Line postcard of a new look, all white S.S. Leonardo da Vinci

S.S. Leonardo da Vinci commenced on yet another extensive cruise departing in February 1970, being a 41-day voyage commencing in the Mediterranean sailing via a host of ports including transiting the  Panama Canal  and bound for  Hawaii , from there she would return again to Italy , thus a very different cruise to the one in March 1966, and it offered a range of Fly-Cruise opportunities.

The Final Days of the Traditional Liners:

During the 1970s competition from jet aircraft became more and more pressing on the North Atlantic service. In 1975 the Italian Line decided to withdraw both the Michelangelo and Raffaello from service.

But despite the withdrawal of state subsidiaries, the Italian Line did not withdraw from the North Atlantic service altogether as the Leonardo da Vinci returned to her original Trans-Atlantic service, although be it for a short time until June 1976.

A gleaming white Leonardo is flying the Blue Pieter, thus she is due to depart New York later that after noon

The photographer is unknown, *Please view the photo notes at the bottom of this page

As soon as her trans-Atlantic duties had completed in June 1976, sadly she, like the Michelangelo and Raffaello were also withdrawn from duties and laid up at La Spezia .

However, in 1977 there was a reprieve, for she was transferred to “ Italia Crociere Internationali ” (ICI), Genoa , and the Leonardo da Vinci headed for the United States of America where she would commence a new cruise service. “Costa Cruises” would operate for as ICI’s General Agents in the USA .

The S.S. Leonardo da Vinci seen in her final role in 1977

The Leonardo da Vinci commenced operating from Miami to the Bahamas on three and four day cruises, meaning she would spend some overnight stays berthed in the Bahamas . But the sad fact was, that the Leonardo da Vinci would actually consume more fuel whilst she was berthed in port, than the majority of other ships would consume whilst under full speed at sea.

Therefore her cruise role to the Bahamas was again sadly relatively short lived and thus around a year after returning to cruising she returned to La Spezia , Italy on September 23, 1978 where ICI had her laid up once again, but this time it would be for the very last time.

Disaster Strikes the Ship:

The Leonardo da Vinci remained laid up at La Spezia for two years, but then suddenly a fire erupted aboard the Leonardo on Friday July 4, 1980 and it rapidly engulfed the entire ship. She burned for four long days, after which the once beautiful looking ship capsized.

A tragic scene with the Leonardo da Vinci seen on fire

This once great liner is seen completely burnt out, and she will soon capsize

The photographer is unknown, * Please view the photo notes at the bottom of this page

Having capsized, here we see the Leonardo partially righted

The once so beautiful S.S. Leonardo da Vinci was declared as a “total constructional loss”. This was without a doubt a sad and a tragic end to one of the most elegant and stylish looking Italian Line ships ever built. Many seem to go wild over the weird funnelled S.S. Michelangelo and Raffaello, although these ships were stylish, but they did not have a patch of exterior style and the magnificence of the great S.S. Leonardo da Vinci , although they did fail her when it came to her underwater hull design!

The burnt-out Leonardo having been righted is now seen at the La Spezia breakers yard

With burnt-out hulk having been righted, she was towed to the breakers yard of “Cant.  Navali Lotti ,” at La Spezia , who broke her up in 1982.

In Conclusion:

Looking back, it was really quite remarkable for in the very same year the S.S. Leonardo da Vinci commenced sailing, the Italian Airline “Al Alitalia” had the audacity to challenge their major competitors the “Italian Line”, both being financially supported by the Italian Government mind you, and around the same time S.S. Leonardo da Vinci headed of on her maiden voyage, Alitalia placed their newly acquired Douglas DC-8 Jetliner on the New York service. Thus, Alitalia was stealing countless of Italian Line’s passengers who would now be flying instead of going by sea as it was so much faster.

As most will be aware the 1960s sadly commenced the end for the many of the beautiful traditional classic Liners, be it the Trans-Atlantic Liners or those that sailed around the globe, even as far as New Zealand, Australia, Asia and South Africa, etc, including many other Italian ships did at that time. The Jet age had begun, especially with the arrival of the Boeing 747, the Jumbo Jet which sounded the end for countless excellent and most beautiful ships, and many where either sold to Greece , or were simply broken up.

New cruise ship MSC Meraviglia arrives at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

Crystal Cranmore Image

RED HOOK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A brand new cruise ship has made a grand entrance into the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook.

The MSC Meraviglia, Italian for wonder, arrived at its new home port on Thursday morning, and is ready to launch year-round sailings from Brooklyn.

The boat will be the first cruise ship here all year long. Officials say the ship will bring more than 10,000 full time-equivalent jobs to the terminal.

The ship will soon offer trips to the Bahamas, Florida, Bermuda, and Canada, among other destinations.

City leaders say this ship will bring job and tourism opportunities for thousands in New York City. The mayor is expecting an economic boom of $102 million a year in spending from tourists.

"We're anticipating 219,000 passengers arriving in NYC per year," Mayor Adams said. "Anytime we have international travelers, spend money, spend money, spend money."

The news of the ship is exciting for many, but the terminal itself was the subject of controversy when migrants were first moved there as a temporary shelter.

Just last month, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was used to house asylum seekers .

The hope was to ease the strain on city shelters, but some advocates were not happy with the conditions . They were compared to detention centers.

At one point, Adams stayed at the terminal overnight on one of the coldest night's of the year to show the temporary setup was warm enough.

Officials say their plan was always to move the men when cruise season started. Those migrants went to new relief centers in Bushwick and Times Square.

The ship's first voyage from Brooklyn is Saturday.

"The uniqueness of New York City really lies in our waterways and our harbors that bring people in and out," Adams said.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is breaking even more records ahead of its maiden voyage this month.

Officially setting sail on Jan. 27, the ship has already made history by holding the title of world’s largest cruise ship. It hit another milestone on Wednesday when it arrived in Miami for the first time in preparation for its debut sailing.

The massive ship was welcomed to Port Miami with banner planes and fireboat salutes, according to a press release from Royal Caribbean. Its grand arrival was celebrated by locals, fans of the cruise line and employees who are all eager to witness the monumental vessel for themselves.

Along with boasting the world’s largest waterpark at sea, Icon will feature a sprawling three-story accommodation called “The Ultimate Townhouse” that the cruise line describes as a "sprawling adventure-filled pad” equipped with an in-suite slide, a karaoke station and more hidden treasures.

The ship will also debut over "40 ways to dine, drink and be entertained," as well as eight "neighborhoods" and 20 decks on board, according to the company. Thrill-seekers can have the time of their lives at 154 feet above the ocean while exploring the Crown’s Edge ropes course experience.

Icon of the Seas will offer vacationers a seven-night sailing through either the Eastern or Western Caribbean from its Miami starting point. It will also make a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas.

The cruise line is also debuting the island’s first-ever adults-only getaway called Hideaway Beach, which is “an all-day experience complete with a private beach and pools, new dedicated spots for drinks and bites, exclusive cabanas, live music and more,” according to the release.

After construction for Icon of the Seas was completed at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the ship went through its first phase of sea trials in June 2023. It has officially replaced Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

5 Reasons to Go Ashore in Bimini, Bahamas

italian cruise ship to bahamas

Located just 55 miles (roughly 89 kilometres) east of Miami, the Bahamian island of Bimini is the cruise industry’s newest port of call. First opened in 2021 during the middle of the global health pandemic, Bimini seeks to court cruise lines looking for an alternative to busy Nassau and Freeport.

But therein lies part of Bimini’s problem, at least from a cruise passenger’s perspective: it’s sleepy. You’re not going to find a pierside Senor Frogs or a massive Margaritaville location where you can get your drink on. Choices in Bimini are, comparatively, few and far between, with shore excursions generally limited to the timeless pursuits of beaches and booze.

And while there is a small tram that whisks cruise passengers to the for-fee beaches and resorts, there’s really nothing within walking distance of the very, very long pier that ships tie up in.

All is not lost, however. For those thinking of staying on their ship in Bimini, here are five very good reasons to walk down the gangway and spend some time in the cruise industry’s newest slice of paradise.

1. Bimini Offers a More Laid-Back Experience than Nassau or Freeport

A tram is available to the end of the pier, and over to the nearby resorts (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Bimini looks like Nassau or Freeport, if someone stopped time and wound the clock back. Infrastructure, particularly near the pier, is still minimal. The American chains (save for the nearby hotels) are largely missing. Bimini, for all intents and purposes, is a sleepy little island made up of several local settlements and a beach with a handful of four-star hotels.

That, however, is one of Bimini’s greatest charms: nothing is overrun yet with tourists. No one is going to shake you down for a hard-sell hair braid or wares sold on sidewalks. Generally speaking, locals are friendly and content to show you around – or leave you alone – as you wish.

That relative laidback quiet is likely to appeal to those who find themselves flustered with Nassau’s hyperactive pier scene, or Freeport’s more industrial surroundings. Here in Bimini, you walk off your ship, down the pier, and into paradise.

2. Bimini’s Beaches are Superb

Bimini's Public Beach is steps away from the cruise ship (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

The water in Bimini has to be seen to be believed. In an area already known for its luscious azure waters, the seas around Bimini kick the beauty factor up by several notches. Crystal clear, tinged with shades of aquamarine and soft blues, and warm to the touch, Bimini is a beachgoer’s paradise.

It doesn’t hurt that there is a small public beach situated right at the head of the cruise pier, complete with chairs and umbrellas that can be rented for a fee. For those who don’t want to venture too far in, this is one of the best beaches outside of cruise line’s private islands for sheer convenience.

A couple admires the surf on Bimini's Radio Beach (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

For the adventurous who don’t mind hailing a cab or renting a golf cart to zip around the island for the day, Bimini’s Radio Beach has to be seen to be believed. Located in nearby Alice Town, Radio Beach consistently scores highly on Tripadvsior , where readers praise its beauty and warmth, if also highlighting the rockier nature of the sand here.

Palm trees and quiet streets border Radio Beach, which is in walking distance to the famous Dolphin House – a residence built entirely by hand since 1992 using nothing but local materials and materials like Conch shells that have washed up on the beach.

italian cruise ship to bahamas

What’s more, those who need a break from the sun will find plenty of shade courtesy of the palm trees that line the area between the elevated road and the sandy beach below.

It’s every bit like a cruise line’s private island, without actually being one. Don’t forget to buy some local conch fritters, too.

Bimini Offers Nearby Resorts to Relax In

For an easygoing day, book one of the inclusive shore excursions through the local hotels in Bimini – Resorts World Bimini and Hilton at Resorts World Bimini are the two 900-pound gorillas here – through the cruise line. Some packages include full open bars and use of all facilities, while others might just include lunch and a few beach chairs.

It’s not the most active excursion, but for those who just want some easy fun in the sun, these inclusive hotel packages fit the bill.

Bimini Offers Great Snorkelling and Sportfishing

The sea around Bimini is idyllic, and ideal for fishing (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Bimini is known for its sportfishing and snorkelling, and both are on offer here. While both are highly weather dependant (two of the three times we’ve been here it’s been rather stormy), they can also be incredibly rewarding.

A popular snorkelling location off Bimini is over the wreck of the Sapona, a cargo steamer that ran aground during a hurricane in 1926 and which has remained lodged in place ever since. There’s little left except for the vessel’s frame and hull outline, but the wreck has become a viable artificial reef and home to many varieties of marine life and tropical fish.

Sportfishing, too, can provide a real thrill – but those prone to seasickness might want to take a pass, as the fishing boats are often buffeted by the large swells that come in off the largely unprotected Atlantic Ocean.

Bimini Has Plenty of Culture – If You’re Willing to Look for It

Used conch shells line the shorelines of Bimini near where they are processed (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Head north to Alice Town to watch locals harvest Conch with their bare hands – and enjoy the fruits of their labors afterwards. Alice Town offers all the bars and restaurants the locals go to, along with a few notable locales, like the aforementioned Dolphin House and even the local market, which has a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in honor of the slain civil rights leader’s contributions to the Bahamas.

Bimini's market also has a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in the gazebo at right (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

From cultural tours of Alice Town and the settlements to the north of the cruise pier, to local conch fritters and laid-back beach breaks and resort escapes, the small environs of Bimini do not disappoint. While it’s hard to independently explore here (travellers really do need to book a shore excursion through the cruise line, an independent tour, or at least rent a golf cart for the day), Bimini offers a world of wonders to those willing to explore off the beaten path.

‘What happened to his organs?’: Sister alleges body of Carnival Cruise Line worker in the Bahamas was returned, missing organs

The family of a man employed onboard Carnival Cruise Line but died at the Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama is crying foul after his body was allegedly returned to Italy with missing organs.

“We want to know if he died at work and what happened to his organs,” sister Rosaria Torrisi lamented to an Italian local daily.

Carnival Paradise - Wikipedia

Her brother Alfio Torrisi, 54, worked as a carpenter on Carnival Paradise, employed by Techni Teak, a company based in Riposto, Sicily. He was reportedly hospitalized after becoming ill onboard the popular cruise line while docked in Grand Bahama. Still, he died on October 2023 while under medical care at the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

When the man’s body returned to Sicily, Italy, the family claims it was stuffed with wood dust and newspaper instead of organs, upon examination by an Italian forensic pathologist .

“My brother was very well. He had undergone medical checks shortly before and was healthy,” Rosaria told La Sicilia .

“He left behind a wife and a child, and us sisters and brothers with [a] destroyed father.

The Prosecutor’s Office in Catania, Italy has launched an investigation into his death, suspecting involuntary manslaughter.

“It all seems so absurd,” the angry sister added.

The Catania Prosecutor’s Office said it had written a letter to the hospital, seeking an explanation regarding the circumstances surrounding his death and reasons for the missing organs, but has heard nothing. It has since started the process for an international rogatory commission to obtain the necessary evidence for the involuntary manslaughter case it intends to pursue.

“We will not rest until we have the truth,” Rosario concluded.

Carnival Firenze cruise ship arrives at new home in Long Beach

by: Travis Schlepp

Posted: Apr 23, 2024 / 12:03 PM PDT

Updated: Apr 23, 2024 / 12:17 PM PDT

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal has a new resident — a 1000-foot-long, 5,200-guest cruise ship by the name of Firenze .

The Carnival cruise ship arrived Tuesday after traveling from Europe to Long Beach , which will be its permanent home base as it sails year-round, offering multi-day cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

The Firenze is an Italian-inspired ship that is named after the city of Florence. It was originally part of a fleet of cruise ships belonging to Costa Cruises, a popular cruise line in Italy, and a subsidiary of Carnival.

It was built and delivered to Costa Cruises in December 2020, but in June 2022 , it was announced Firenze would be coming stateside as part of the company’s “ Costa by Carnival ” initiative, alongside its sister ship, Carnival Venezia, which calls New York City home.

Both cruise ships feature Italian-themed restaurants, bars and entertainment, and unique Italian-inspired design and architecture.

It’s the third Carnival cruise ship to sail from Long Beach to Baja Mexico and the Mexican Riviera, joining the Carnival Panorama and Radiance ships. Firenze is the largest of the three and has the highest maximum passenger capacity of more than 6,500 combined guests and crew.

The ship is over 323 meters long with 135,300 gross tonnage, a measurement of a ship’s total internal volume, and has more than 2,100 passenger cabins, according to its  specification page .

Video shared by Carnival Cruise Line shows the new Carnival Firenze arriving in Long Beach in April 2024. (Carnival Cruise Line)

Firenze’s maiden voyage —from Long Beach, at least — will take place on Thursday, with an “Italian-inspired” inaugural event and naming celebration being held the day before at the Carnival Cruise Terminal.

Carnival Cruise Line executives will be on hand, as well as actor Jonathan Bennett, known for several holiday romance films and his portrayal of Aaron Samuels in the classic teen-comedy “Mean Girls.”

Bennett is a longtime Carnival cruiser and even honeymooned on one of its ships, Carnival officials said. He sailed the first voyage of Venezia last May and has been given the unofficial title of Firenze’s “godfather.”

Firenze will offer several different itinerary options, with cruises ranging from three-day quick tips to seven-day excursions.

Cruises can be reserved by phone or online at  carnival.com .

Lightning Fire on Carnival Cruise Ship Cancels Trip Through Bahamas; 2nd Major Fire on Same Ship in 2 Years

A fire potentially caused by a lightning strike erupted on a cruise ship en route to the Bahamas over the weekend, interrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers.

The Carnival Freedom has now caught fire twice in less than two years, Knewz.com has learned.

An exhaust funnel on the cruise ship's port side burst into flames on Saturday, March 23, prompting the company to cancel its next two voyages.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," Carnival wrote in a post on X . The company also noted it was investigating "the possibility of a lightning strike" based on reports from eyewitnesses.

A passenger from Maryland , Heath Barnes, shared videos on social media showing flames shooting out of the pipe amid gray, rainy conditions . He took the videos from his room's private balcony after he said he heard thunder and his family members notified him about the fire.

"I thought they were giving me a hard time but I got up and went out on the balcony and sure enough the flames and smoke was pouring out of the tail," Barnes told TMX.

https://twitter.com/CarnivalCruise/status/1771646928377254314

The cruise was set to dock at Princess Cay at 9 a.m., but around 8 a.m., crew members announced over the loudspeakers that strong winds would prevent the ship from making the scheduled stop. Instead, guests would "have a sea day and be in Freeport tomorrow," Barnes said.

"It was storming pretty hard until about 1 [p.m.] with all the upper decks closed," he said. A couple hours later, "the loudest thunder and lightning I have ever heard happened," he added.

According to Barnes, the crew instructed all guests to stay inside until around 5:40 p.m. due to the fire.

"Definitely an exciting day," Barnes said.

During the Carnival Freedom's visit to Freeport the following day, a technical team "completed a thorough assessment," John Heald, Carnival's brand ambassador, wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, March 24.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Heald said. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

No injuries have been reported, and guests were refunded for the cancelled cruises.

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests , as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation," Heald said.

In May of 2022, a fire broke out in a funnel of the Carnival Freedom while it was in Grand Turk, as People reported at the time.

Photos and videos on social media showed a massive plume of black smoke billowing from the burning pipe as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

The 948-foot cruise ship was built in 2007 and can carry up to 3,500 passengers, according to Cruise Mapper .

Two crew members have also died on the Holland America Line’s New Amsterdam ship, as Knewz.com reported , while the ship was at the island resort of Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Friday, March 22, following “an accidental steam release in an engineering space in the Bahamas,” a spokesperson for the cruise line said.
