We had a fantastic time hiking with him. The rating is more a 4.5 but don’t have that option on trip adviser … we were hoping to spot some wild life but alas animals have a mind of their own! Chilling at the waterfalls and ending the trip in horseback riding was a cherry on top! The lunch was very good as well! Definitely worth the cost… door to door was 5.5 hours but could be longer. Marvin was an amazing tour guide, very passionate and eager to show us the animals, We saw a mama sloth and her baby, pit vipers, tarantulas, monkeys, birds, insects, and a even a porcupine! We saw a black breasted wood quail and a olive streaked flycatcher singing their heart out in a mating song. Absolutely remarkable. We saw more than we expected and enjoyed every minute. He picked us up in a timely manner and took us on a wonderful birding trip tailored to our needs. He is very kind and exceptional at spotting and drawing out interesting birds. I got great pictures of both Quetsal, Motmots, Bell-bird, Trogons, Long-tailed Manakin, and other very interesting ones. I would especially recommend him to birders who already has some basic insight into the hobby. He is in the top 40 among bird watchers in Costa Rica and his guidance is brilliant when looking for regionally rare species beyond the normal sightings on a typical tourist check-list. I decided to take the 4x4 land rover out at Station 4. Some people rode the horses. Jean Carlo was such an excellent guide, always so kind, considerate, and informative. He spotted many beautiful birds for us including motmots and several gorgeous euphonias. I'm a novice birder, just picking up the hobby, and Jean Carlo essentially provided me a 4 hour coaching session with our tour. I learned so much from him in regards to birding and I will always be grateful for this experience. His passion is infectious and I feel that the trajectory of my birding has been so positively affected by him. He is flexible to adjust the birding locations based on any target species you're hoping for. We enjoyed viewing so many species over the course of our tour. Some highlights were the Collared Trogon, Scarlet-thighed Dacnis, Masked Tityra, Elegant Euphonia. Jean Carlo uses eBird and shared the checklist for the day with us afterward. All of the logistics went super smoothly and he picked us up right on time. He is an incredibly experienced bird watcher, and help us see 60+ species in a half day of birding! He is also a fount of information about the area and we learned so much from him about much more than just birds. I would absolutely recommend this trip for anyone interested in spending time seeing the incredible birds of Costa Rica. Jean Carlos was incredibly knowledgeable and we learned so much from him. I’m glad we did the tour first thing, as it helped us do additional birding on our own later. We are a family of 4 with teenage boys, and we toured with Jean Carlo when we visited Monteverde 4 years ago and again in March 2023. I saved his contact information because I knew we were going back (we loved the area) and knew we wanted to do a night tour + morning birding tour with him again. He is so passionate and knowledgeable, and brings the forest to life. I love that he referred to the big wild avocado tree in Curi Cancha as a “restaurant” for the birds - and we saw a male resplendent quetzal in it, absolutely spectacular! He even remembered some of the birds and animals that we saw together 4 years ago, and exactly where we saw them. Jean Carlo is a first class act - can’t wait to return yet again in the future.
