The Jungle Cruise

BACKSTORY (July 17, 1955–Present): Inspired by a “True-Life Adventure.” Boats modeled after “The African Queen,” which Harper Goff loved. Bill Evans (Disneyland landscaper) uprooted trees, replanted them upside-down, then grew vines on the exposed roots, thus creating “new” plants. Imagineers dyed the water brown so guests couldn’t see the river bottom which varies from 3'—8' deep. Marc Davis created the wading elephant pool and the rhino/safari/totem pole scenes. Supposedly this ride caused Walt’s obsession of “plussing the show” when he overheard a mother telling her child that they’d already been on the ride and didn’t need to go on it again; Walt had Imagineers add more scenes.

If you’d like to keep your family together, please stay in the same line. However, if there is someone in your family you’d like to get rid of, just put them in the opposite line and you’ll never see them again.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please. Would the party that lost the roll of 50 $20 bills, wrapped in a red rubber band, please report to the shipping office…we have good news for you. We found your red rubber band.”

“Your attention, please. We do not allow cutting in line here at the World-Famous Jungle Cruise. Anyone caught with a pair of scissors will be asked to leave.”

“Come all the way up to the front…up by me. There’s no truth to the rumor that you get a longer ride in the back. Slide all the way forward now…that’s how we keep the cushions clean!”

THE DISNEYLAND LINE, AUGUST 25, 1977

Disneyland Taxidermy: From Cover to Cover What do you do with a greasy, holey, hairless moose? Why you change its fur, of course. And that's just what Bob Johnson does. Few people in the world have a job like Bob has as a Staff Shop Artificial Taxidermist. He has been doing fur and hair transplants on Audio Animatronic animals for over 14 years here at Disneyland--ever since the transition was made from authentic to artifical furs for heartier environment endurance and wildlife preservation purposes.

This artificial taxidermy required an artificial taxidermist. "The real taxidermist left because his experience was with the real stuff," Bob said. "On my first day I went to my supervisor and said, 'Okay, now that I have the job, how do I do it?' and he said, 'That's your problem!' The job had never been done before so nobody knew where to start. I spent the whole first year experimenting," Bob recalls. "When I finished my first few animals and put them in the Park people kept asking, 'What is it?'"

Being the first (and only) artificial taxidermist seemed to be quite a trial-and-error job for a while, but there really was little time for guessing with about 210 immediate unfurred and unfeathered customers. New materials had to be ordered and experimented with quickly. Bob worked on acrylic, nylon and orlon furs, tried all kind of dyes to see which would work on water animals, which would fade in the hot summer sun and which could withstand constant animation movements. The fur and feathers on audio animatronic birds and animals had to be constantly replaced because of the grease and wear and tear that ruin its Disney appearance.

White artificial fur is dyed in various shades and colors of shoe dye according to pictures of the animals in such references as the National Geographic Wild Animals of North America. Then, needing something a little more durable than Aquanet hairspray to hold and protect the dyed fur, Bob applies about four coats of spray varnish to do the trick of holding every hair in place--for years.

Besides an interesting job, the taxidermist also has an interesting office with migratory wall decorations. The particolored feathers covering his wall are constantly being used and replaced to attire over 100 birds. The taxidermist outfits a variety of birds from Jose the parrot to "odd-ball feathered things." Plumes, turkey feathers and ostrich feathers, among others, come in 400 t 500 sizes and colors. Each feather is individually glued to the bird, but contrary to popular belief, birds are not all feathers--at least not Disney birds. The undersides of most birds and the entire bodies of other birds are done in short fur material--the same material used for the former Mine Train marmots, six of which also decorate his office. Taking shortcuts such as these, some birds take little over an hour to attire.

Animals are more time-consuming due to their complexity. The Jungle Cruise gnu, for example, has three types of hair on its face and all down its back. This doesn't even include the individual horsehairs that must be inserted with a needle into its ears, tail, eyelashes, etc. Bears, after being outfitted in fur, must be inserted with horsehair whiskers, earhair and rubber claws.

It took some time working with every detail of every animal to get his artificial taxidermy to a science, but now when Bob places one of his works in the Park nobody has to ask him "What is it?" They know--it's a work of art.

“We’re leaving the last outpost of civilization and entering the jungle by way of the Irrawaddy river of Asia. We’re now entering the rainforest, wait it’s not a rain forrest, it’s a mist forrest. But you probably mist (missed) it!”

“As you can see, those crocodiles provide the Temple with a very effective security system. They are completely reliable and they never ask for a dime.”

“Up on the steps—two King Cobras, some of the world’s deadliest snakes. Hmmm…there used to be three of them. Wonder where the other one is?”

“Don’t make any sudden moves. That’s a Bengal Tiger there on the left! Those tigers can jump over 20'. But not to worry. We must be at least…19' away, he’ll jump right over us!”

“Here is a statue of Ganesha, the Elephant-Headed God and guardian to the sacred bathing pool of the Indian elephants. Ganesha is the only concrete evidence we have that elephants exist here in the jungle.”

THE DISNEYLAND LINE, MAY 9, 1973

THE LOST AND FOUND DEPARTMENT OF THE JUNGLE CRUISE

The articles pictured above are a small sampling of some of the various things that were found in the now dry Jungle Cruise river which is currently undergoing a three week rehab. The rehab will involve cleaning out the almost 2,000 foot long river, installing a new switch in the host storage area, re-working all of the animation, checking and repairing the guide rail, and rebuilding the sides of the river bank which have worn down from the constant action of the river.

The Decorating Department is giving Mother Nautre a little assist by completely rebuilding the rain forest section of the river and our Landscaping Department is doing a general rehab of the entire jungle area.

The bottom and sides of the river are of gunite construction and the river has an average width of thirty feet and an average depth of five feet. Each ungle Cruise boat is independently powered by inboard natural gas engines, riding on the 1,920 foot long guide rail. Natural gas was chosen because of its clean burning characteristics.

It will take approximately two and a half million gallons of water to fill the river when the rehab is complete.

“And look at all the elephants on the river today! This comes as a complete surprise to me ‘cause I had no idea these guys were going to be here. If you want to take pictures, go right ahead. All the elephants have their trunks on.”

“Oh, no. There on the right. That big elephant is coming up and it looks like he’s aiming for us! On no! He’s coming up again…you folks in the back…get down! Well…I guess he didn’t have time to reload.”

JOEL HALBERSTADT: 1960's Jungle Skippers...A Different Breed

Former Disneyland Cast Member Joel Halberstadt (and Daveland reader!) graciously shared some of his memories from his days in Adventureland. In Joel's words:

As an ex-Disney employee, with six years in Adventureland, two as head of Disneyland communications and four years in management at Imagineering, I still count the Jungle Cruise as my "home." Much to my amusement, the jungle cruise spiel, which I re-wrote in it's entirety in 1976, still contains most of the jokes and lines I incorporated into it 36 years ago. At Imagineering in the mid-seventies, I had the honor to work along side many of those who you have pictured in your historical photos, such as Marc Davis, Herb Ryman, X. Attencio, Bob Gurr, and John Hench, among others.

To many of the jungle cruise skippers who existed in the late 1960's and early 70's, the spiel was everything.

In 1968, I had the privilege of being trained by an older guy named Lee David, an Hawaiian performer who had worked in vaudeville and on stage in a previous life. In fact, he was the designated skipper Walt always asked for when he went on the jungle cruise. Lee taught me everything he knew about timing, voice inflection, delivery, eye contact, involving the audience, humor in good taste, and overall stage presence.

And, I also benefited from working along side several professional actors, school teachers and others who were used to speaking in front of others---Mike Lorenz would be at the top of that List, along with Don Munsell, Bob Glassman, Doug Miller, John McCoy, and Bob Levering. They knew so well the adage "whatever you put into your spiel, you'll get out of it..."All great examples for me to be sure and I constantly honed my spiel and looked forward to every trip---pure entertainment.

The result was a small group of perhaps 6-7 skippers whose humor could be described as a mix of Steve Martin, Chris Rock, and a touch of Don Rickles. It was all carefully thought out ahead of time, since a major aspect of our fun and success was audience involvement in our spiel. I personally took every chance I could to involve each kid, grandmother, or family in my spiel to make them feel as special as possible.

And so after more than six years on the Jungle Cruise, more than 20,000 spiels/trips, and countless interactions with guests of all kinds, I never thought I would be at a loss for words....except for, well, uh ...those three times!

July 1969: #1 Loss for Words - At the attacking native scene, a frequent bit I used was pretending to carry on a conversation with them, and then turning to one of my crew and informing them that the natives wanted to trade three coconuts for their wife/sister/mother-in-law...and suggesting "...I'd hold out for four if I were you.!" Always got a hilarious reaction from everyone...well, almost every one. On one particular trip, as the crew exited my boat, a middle aged man of foreign origin who had been sitting in the middle, turned to me and said, with squinted eyes and a growl to his voice, "I did NOT appreciate you trying to trade my wife for three coconuts!" Of course, my immediate reaction was to respond with, "Well, okay...what do you think she's really worth? Four? Five? But it was instantly clear that this man was deadly serious, and was NOT happy. Perhaps in his country women were held in such high regard that the mere suggestion of trading them for anything was an outrageous insult. Perhaps in his country no one had a sense of humor. Either way, I opened my mouth, but nothing came out...all I could muster was to suppress my laughter and shake my head, trying to convince myself that this wasn't happening.

August 1971: #2 Loss for Words - One of our jobs taking E tickets at the turnstile (when they had tickets) was to make the guests' boring wait in line as enjoyable and as quick as possible. And there were perhaps a dozen stories/announcements/bits we had crafted to achieve that thru the microphone in front of us. For better or worse, a few of us discovered that the the turnstile was our stage and the queue area was the audience. Indeed, many guests as they handed us their E coupon actually commented on how much they enjoyed out patter. One of the bits that got the biggest reaction was to announce: "Once again, we are still looking for that little lost girl who got separated from her family ...please keep your eyes open for her. She has blonde hair, shorts and a halter top -- and is approximately 22 years old. If you see her, please take firmly by the hand and bring her over to us at the turnstile...we'll know what to do."

One summer day in 1971, about a minute after making that announcement, I look up and approaching me was another reason for me to temporarily lose my ability to speak: There she was...the consummate California surfer girl, 5 foot 6, long blonde hair, tan - in a halter top and shorts yet - and with a face and body that I was sure had made grown men weep. As she confidently brushed her hair back, she said with a playful smile, "I think I may be the little lost girl you've been looking for." With a wink, she pushed through the turnstile and was gone. I laughed out loud, but no words would come. Fortunately, I resumed normal breathing a few moments later.

September 1972: #3 Loss for Words - Working on front load late one afternoon, I turned around to see a three year old girl waiting in line with her family near the turnstile. Unbelievably, her father had allowed her to slip under the railing and protective netting that separated the guests from the water. She was now standing two inches from the edge of the queue area over five feet of cold, filthy water. I started to walk toward her and to yell out a warning to her father, but the words stuck in my throat and never came. The three foot high child had fallen backwards and upside down into the water below. Although I was still about fourteen feet away, I took a long running jump from front load toward the spot where she had disappeared, realizing in mid-air that she had not yet come up. Closing my eyes, I submerged myself over my head, grasping under the dark dock for what seemed forever. My hand felt her arm near the bottom, and I propelled her up and out of the water into the waiting arms of a few fellow skippers who had run over to the edge of the dock to assist. Other then some coughing up water and crying, she seemed to be okay as the nurse and security officer from First Aid took her away in a wheelchair. A serious injury avoided? Almost certainly. A life saved? Possibly. But any other vigilant skipper would have done the same thing if put into that identical situation.

And to the Adventureland manager and supervisor on duty in 1972, who never acknowledged the incident ever occurred or offered one word of appreciation... "you're welcome."

Disneyland Shares More Jungle Cruise Photos and Video With a Look at What’s New

Disneyland has shared even more information about the reimagined Jungle Cruise, including video of some of the changes and interviews with Imagineers Kim Irvine and Chris Beatty. The Disneyland Jungle Cruise reopens officially on July 16th, and the Walt Disney World version will be complete this summer (with the same changes). The Disneyland version is in soft opening now. Read more below from Disney!

The world-famous Jungle Cruise at Disneyland Park officially reopens on July 16, 2021, with new adventures, an expanded storyline and more humor as skippers take guests on a tongue-in-cheek journey along some of the most remote rivers around the world. The new creative concept is original to Walt Disney Imagineering, just like the classic attraction itself.

Changes to this attraction also are underway in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, with completion expected later this summer.

“We’re excited to be building on the story of the Jungle Cruise to include new adventures that stay true to the experience we know and love, while adding more humor, more wildlife, and an interconnected story,” said Chris Beatty, an Imagineer who led creative development of the enhancements. “As part of creative development, we’ve also introduced characters from around the world and took a thoughtful approach to ensure accurate representation of cultures in our story.”

The world-famous Jungle Cruise skippers return to share the unique adventure and interactions that guests expect on this expedition in Adventureland. New scenes have fun with the legendary comedic tone of the attraction, and some unexpected scenarios give the jungle and the animals the last laugh!

What’s new: Disney Imagineers have a longstanding history of updating attractions at the Disneyland Resort and Disney Parks. The expanded backstory centers around Alberta Falls, the granddaughter of the world-renowned Dr. Albert Falls, who is now proprietor of the Jungle Navigation Company Ltd. New scenes include:

• A safari of explorers from around the world finds itself up a tree after the journey goes awry
• Chimpanzees have taken over the expedition’s wrecked boat
• A Lost & Found location has turned into a Gift Shop run by Alberta’s longtime friend, Trader Sam

Don’t miss: Jungle Cruise skippers incorporate plenty of gags as they narrate “wildlife” scenes for guests who have boarded a canopied tramp steamer, leaving civilization behind.  Those scenes include:

• Ancient Cambodian Shrine with leaping tigers, lethal cobras and snapping crocodiles

• Jungle Cruise Safari Camp is a former camp overrun by “explosively” curious gorillas
• Indian Elephant Bathing Pool where bathing Indian elephants have their “trunks on”
• The African Veldt where angry hippos and hungry lions are guarding a “sleeping” zebra
• Schweitzer Falls, where skippers introduce guests to something they may have never seen before – the “back side of water”!

Changes through the years: The tone of the attraction was more serious when it opened, on the first day Disneyland Park welcomed guests in 1955. The river has changed course through the years and additions included the elephant bathing pool, gorillas in the safari camp and a new piranha scene.

Imaginative landscaping : The foliage is designed to look as if it had been created by nature. Since 1955, the Jungle Cruise vegetation has evolved into its own tropical jungle with three levels: the upper canopy, the understory and the forest floor. The “father” of the attraction’s jungle was horticulturist and Disney Legend Bill Evans, who directed the landscaping of much of Disneyland in the 1950s.

• The skippers of the Jungle Cruise lead a humorously irreverent expedition, carrying passengers along four rivers: the Nile of Africa, the Amazon of South America, the Irrawaddy of Southeast Asia and the Ganges of India.
• Guests will enjoy the return of the Jungle Cruise and also something new at The Tropical Hideaway – a Pineapple Split! Starting July 16 and while supplies last, it will be served in a souvenir container that looks like a Jungle Cruise boat with a red-and-white striped canopy. This “pineapple split” comes with DOLE Whip® , blueberries, strawberries and Mandarin oranges, topped with coconut-caramel sauce, crushed plantains, dried hibiscus and toasted coconut.

The History and Evolution of the Disney’s Jungle Cruise

Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. Everything from the distinctive ride vehicles, comical tableaus, animatronic animals, and even the purposely over-the-top skipper spiel have become iconic elements of the Disney theme park experience, explaining why the Jungle Cruise has been cloned to nearly every Disney resort around the world.

However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021 .

To analyze this attraction’s controversial history, we must first look at its origins, years before Disneyland was constructed.

The origins.

The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats. The series was so successful with movie-goers and critics that it eventually evolved from two-reel shorts to full-length documentary films that quickly became a cornerstone of Walt Disney Studios.  

Guests would view the animals from skipper-guided ride-vehicles modeled after the titular boat from the 1951 hit film The African Queen, while traveling through a jungle designed by Disneyland landscape extraordinaire Bill Evans.  

Welcome to the Jungle

Jungle Cruise opened with the rest of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. Sure they would be familiar with Goff’s general concept, and if they squinted they could imagine how the rather light jungle Evans planted would grow into the lush greenery seen today, but many iconic elements of the attraction would be absent. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. In fact, there was no humor period.  

The Jungle Cruise, like Disneyland overall, was a massive success upon its opening, quickly becoming an integral part of American pop culture. However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again. Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions.  

One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

These comedic elements in-turn influenced the ride’s skipper narration, which became more and more comical over the years. Davis’ changes led to the attraction becoming even more popular.  

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.

The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section.

Jungle Cruise International

A near-direct clone of the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction opened with Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, but when Disneyland Paris, then known as EuroDisney, opened in 1992, the park became the first “castle park” not to feature a Jungle Cruise on opening day. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks.

Disneyland Levels Up

While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction. The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy.  

While these changes were substantial, they were nothing compared to the original plans , which were going to see a portion of the Jungle Cruise take place inside the Indiana Jones show building, as part of a plan to build a massive complex that would house four attractions.  

Holiday Overlays

Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions. As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise.

The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day.  

Controversy in the Jungle

Despite Jungle Cruise’s ongoing popularity, in recent decades the attraction has become controversial due to its purported negative depictions of native people, specifically the “headhunter” party as well as the Trader Sam “head salesman” character.  

In January 2021,  Disney announced that it would be making significant story changes to the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World to alleviate these issues. Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the changes in a statement to the Los Angeles Times , saying:  

As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love – the humor and wit of our incredible skippers — while making needed updates.

Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger added , “The exciting changes we’re making to one of Disney’s most popular classic attractions, Jungle Cruise, reflect our commitment to creating unparalleled experiences that reflect, not only the best in storytelling, but also the values and rich diversity of our world.”

As part of these announcements, Disney made it clear that these changes to the attraction were not going to be related to the upcoming film based on the attraction.

Said film, simply titled Jungle Cruise , was released in July of 2021. The film starred Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. It was such a hit, a sequel is already in the works.

Ever since opening in Disneyland in 1955, the Jungle Cruise has been one of the “boulder attractions” amongst guests who don't take adventure for “granite.” Due to its popularity at the Anaheim location, the ride was introduced to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and officially opened with the park in October 1971.

Since its inception, this classic adventure has whisked millions of eager explorers away on a journey through dense, exotic landscapes, teeming with animatronic wildlife. Walt himself called the ride “the waterways of our man-made jungle.” The Jungle Cruise boasts an approximately 10-minute boat ride through “10,000 miles” of river wilderness, encompassing the Egyptian Nile, the African Congo, the Amazon in South America, and the Southeast Asian Mekong River.

It Was Originally the Only Ride in Adventureland

As the gates of Disneyland swung open in 1955, Adventureland made its debut, featuring a lone attraction that stole the show – the Jungle Cruise. Drawing inspiration from Disney's acclaimed True-Life Adventures documentary films and the movie The African Queen , the ride and its surrounding area became a gateway to wild and captivating narratives.

In the early stages, there was a plan to christen the area “True-Life Adventure Land,”  a nod to the documentary series that fueled its creation. However, simplicity prevailed, and the name was gracefully shortened to the now-iconic “Adventureland.”

Real Animals Were Almost Used

In the early days of envisioning the Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney himself dreamt of infusing a touch of authenticity by featuring live animals on the attraction. His passion for creating immersive experiences led him to contemplate the idea of incorporating real wildlife to bring the jungle to life. However, practical challenges and safety concerns soon became apparent. Maintaining the well-being of the animals, ensuring their safety and the safety of the visitors, and the unpredictability and inconsistency of live creatures in a controlled environment posed significant hurdles.

In the spirit of innovation, Disney opted for a groundbreaking solution–Audio Animatronics. This decision not only addressed the logistical challenges but also allowed for a level of creative control that would ensure a consistent and magical experience for every guest. By pioneering the use of animatronics in Jungle Cruise, Disney successfully blended imagination with technology, creating a timeless attraction that captures the essence of the wild in a safe and enchanting manner.

The Skippers Don't Drive the Boat

While the charismatic skippers of the Jungle Cruise may appear to be masterfully navigating the winding rivers with expert precision, there's a delightful secret beneath the surface–the boats are actually on a track! Yes, the magic of Disney extends even to the waterways of this iconic attraction.

Behind the scenes, the boats are guided along an unseen track beneath the surface, ensuring a seamless and controlled journey through the exotic landscapes. What makes the experience truly enchanting is the skillful touch of the skippers. The skippers excel in making you believe they are steering the ship with ease with perfectly timed spins of the captain's wheel. While they can control the speed of the boat and move it forwards and backward, the track guides the boat along the Jungle Cruise's journey. This way, the skippers can focus on bringing the adventure to life with their wit and “niles and niles” of punny jokes.

There's Something in the Water

Have you ever wondered why the water on the Jungle Cruise river has such a murky appearance? Personally, I have. Come to find out, it's not a natural muckiness! In fact, it's Imagineers employing a clever technique!

The Imagineers introduced a water-soluble dye, tinted in green-brown hues, to give the water an authentic jungle aesthetic. Located behind the “Eighth Wonder of the World” a large pump disperses the dye into the water.

Beyond its visual impact, this dye serves a crucial purpose—it conceals the boat tracks and wiring essential for the animatronics. It also helps give the illusion that the water is much deeper, like it would be in the wild. In reality, the water is only about 4 feet deep in most areas. This thoughtful technique ensures that guests remain fully immersed in the jungle ambiance.

Sensors Help the Skippers

Personally, I was always curious how the skippers had such impeccable timing with their jokes hitting at the exact right moment with an animatronic. If you’ve ever wondered about this too, wonder no more–it's no mere coincidence!

According to DisneyFanatic.com and TPM Vids , there are sensors in The Jungle Cruise that trigger a specific effect to go off when the boat passes. This clever technological integration allows skippers to synchronize their narration and punch lines perfectly. Harnessing the ability to control the boat's speed, skippers ensure that their witty commentary aligns precisely with the sensor signals preceding each animatronic encounter.

An Animator Added the Fun

When The Jungle Cruise initially debuted in 1955, it embraced a more educational tone reminiscent of the documentaries that inspired its creation. However, by the early 1960s, Walt Disney envisioned injecting additional drama and humor into the ride to enhance the overall experience. To bring this vision to life, he enlisted the talents of animator Marc Davis, one of Disney's esteemed “Nine Old Men.”

Starting his journey with Disney in 1935 as an animator for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Davis became a crucial collaborator on various iconic rides, including Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, it's a small world, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Walt Disney's request for humorous sketches from Davis marked the beginning of transforming the once-serious wilderness into a “wise-cracking” adventure. Among Davis' notable contributions is the creation of the Elephant Pool scene, leaving a lasting mark on the Jungle Cruise's whimsical evolution.

Too Good for Backstage

In addition to his work on the Jungle Cruise, Marc Davis was enlisted to create entertaining scenes adorning the outskirts of various lands visible from the train, serving as lively advertisements for the attractions within. According to a Marc Davis conversation with Disney Archaeologist Scott Wolf detailed in a Keeping the Magic Alive YouTube video and The Kingdom Insider article , the “Trapped Safari” scene was initially designed as a promotional visual. However, Walt Disney, captivated by Davis' ingenuity, declared that it had to be in the ride.

Fast forward to today, and the once-promotional sketch has evolved into a cherished fan-favorite scene on the attraction. Notably, it has become the “butt-of-the-joke” for many of the skippers' witty punch lines.

Easter Eggs Laid by The Rock

In July 2021, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the highly anticipated summer blockbuster “Jungle Cruise,” featuring the dynamic duo of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. While the Jungle Cruise attraction predates the movie, the film drew inspiration from the iconic Disneyland ride. Disneyland's queue, in a stroke of cinematic magic, received some delightful Easter Eggs courtesy of the movie.

Notably, across from Dr. Kon Chunosuke’s insect collection, visitors will discover the map from the film—a map that Dr. Lily (Emily Blunt) reveals to Skipper Frank (Dwayne Johnson), leading them on a quest to find an ancient, powerful healing tree poised to revolutionize medicine.

The Disneyland queue holds additional hidden gems from the movie. Dr. Lily and Skipper Frank's attire is suspended behind Alberta Falls’ office door in the Jungle Cruise boathouse. Frank's coat also adorns Alberta's office, discreetly placed behind a wicker hutch. Further intrigue awaits in the Safari Supply Storage Room, where a Conquistador's helmet serves as another nod to the film's adventurous narrative.

Recent Changes to the Jungle Cruise Attraction

Returning visitors to Disneyland and Magic Kingdom will notice a change in the Jungle Cruise attraction, as the character known as the “Head Salesman” Trader Sam is no longer present in person. Following a 2021 refurbishment at both parks, which aimed to address concerns about cultural sensitivity, several scenes underwent renovations to ensure they were more respectful to Indigenous people.

In response to criticisms regarding the representation of Indigenous people on the ride, Disney Parks took action in January 2021. The refurbishments were designed to “reflect and value the diversity of the world around us.”

As part of these changes, scenes featuring a war party with spears, native dancers, and Trader Sam selling shrunken heads have been completely removed from the attraction. However, Trader Sam is still part of the ride in a different capacity, as guests can now encounter him within the new “Gift Shop,” where he sells explorers' lost items.

Special Holiday Overlays

During the merriest season of the year, both Disneyland and Disney World once joined in the festive transformation of The Jungle Cruise, giving rise to the enchanting “Jingle Cruise” holiday overlay. While Disneyland stopped doing this festive overlay in 2017, Disney World still partakes in the merriment every year.

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy opens in theaters Friday and judging the photos from the production of the new action comedy, the Barbie Oscar nominee is diving headfirst into his role as a stuntman opposite Emily Blunt.

The big screen adventure is inspired by the hit Lee Majors TV series of the same name from the 1980s. Here’s a look at several photos of the Barbie Ken actor getting down and dirty as a rough-and-tumbling stunt performer in the action comedy.

In The Fall Guy , Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a down-and-out ex-stuntman who is recruited by a film producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) to pull off perhaps his greatest stunt yet.

The assignment isn’t on a movie, though. Instead, Colt needs to find a big-name action star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who has gone missing from Meyer’s big-budget action film Metalstorm .

Colt is going to need his skills as a stuntman, though, because behind the movie star’s disappearance is part of a conspiracy and he’s walking — as well as flying and falling — into a very dangerous situation.

Ryan Gosling’s fellow 2024 Oscar nominee Emily Blunt ( Oppenheimer ) also stars in The Fall Guy as Judy Moreno, the ex-girlfriend of Gosling’s Colt Seavers.

A former camera operator, Judy is a first-time director on Metalstorm and gets more than she bargained for with the gig as she’s pulled into Colt’s assignment to locate the missing movie star.

Blunt is no stranger to action films, having starred in such hits as Looper , A Quiet Place and its sequel and The Huntsman: Winter’s War . Blunt’s other action movie credits include Jungle Cruise in a turn opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Edge of Tomorrow , in which she starred opposite Tom Cruise.

‘The Fall Guy’ Is Directed By A Former Movie Stuntman

It’s only appropriate that The Fall Guy is directed by a former movie stuntman, which is why the production hired prolific stunt performer David Leitch.

Before Leitch directed such films hits as Atomic Blonde , Deadpool 2 , Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Bullet Train , he did stunt work in more than 80 productions dating back to 1995. Among Leitch’s stunt performing credits are The Matrix Reloaded , The Matrix Revolutions , Van Helsing , The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy .

In addition, Leitch served as a stunt coordinator on such hits as Tron: Legacy and the 2014 live-action and CGI hybrid version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , which starred, among others, future Reacher star Alan Ritchson as Raphael.

Real Stunt Performers Get Their Due With ‘The Fall Guy’

Normally only actors and filmmakers are featured in production photos but The Fall Guy’s press materials highlight some of the film’s key stunt performers alongside Ryan Gosling and Aaron-Taylor Johnson.

Among those pictured above are Ben Jenkin, whose stunt credits include the blockbusters Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 , Spider-Man: No Way Home and G odzilla vs. Kong , as well as Logan Holliday ( Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , Logan and Bad Boys for Life ) and Justin Eaton ( Black Adam , The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Jumanji: The Next Level ).

Jenkin, Holladay and Eaton perform stunts, naturally, for Gosling and Taylor-Johnson in The Fall Guy .

Gosling Also Has Action Movie Work On His Resume

Like Emily Blunt, Ryan Gosling has appeared in his share of action movies over the years. Among his hit action films are Drive , Blade Runner 2049 , The Nice Guys and The Gray Man .

Up next, Gosling — who also starred as legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong in the historical U.S. space travel chronicle First Man — is set to star as an astronaut once again in space thriller Project Hail Mary .

‘The Fall Guy’ Also Stars Winston Duke

Also starring in The Fall Guy is Winston Duke, who plays Colt Seavers’ (Ryan Gosling) stunt coordinator and best friend, Dan Tucker.

Like his cast mates, Duke has several action movie credits on his resume including the pivotal role of M’Baku in Black Panther , Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame .

Teresa Palmer And Stephanie Hsu Are Also Featured In ‘The Fall Guy’

Rounding out The Fall Guy cast are Teresa Palmer and Stephanie Hsu.

Palmer — whose credits include the 2015 remake of Point Break , the horror thriller Lights Out , the zombie comedy Warm Bodies and the biographical war drama Hacksaw Ridge — stars in The Fall Guy as Iggy Starr, who is Tom Ryder’s (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) girlfriend and fellow film star.

Stephani Hsu stars in The Fall Guy as Alma Milan, who is Tom Ryder’s personal assistant. Hsu played the key role of Joy Wang in the 2022 Best Picture Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once , which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

Hsu’s credits also include the superhero action blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and a voice role in Adam Sandler’s animated film Leo . In addition, Hsu’s television credits include the recurring role of Mei in the hit Prime Video streaming series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel .

The Fall Guy opens in theaters on May 3 and will face off against the new horror thriller Tarot and this weekend’s new box office champ Challengers , starring Zendaya .
