Freeride world tour junior, qualifier & challenger calendars announced.

The Freeride World Tour (FWT) has announced a new overarching identity to bring more clarity to the relationship between the FWT Junior , FWT Qualifier and FWT Challenger event series, and with this news, has released an action-packed freeride calendar for the 2023 season.

junior freeride world tour 2023

NEW IDENTITY The FWT is the leading brand in the sport, making it a natural decision to combine each freeride series under one name. The Sport Pyramid format remains the same, starting with grassroots events through to the elite, but each series will now fall under the FWT brand.

The pyramid starts with the FWT Junior series, an incubation stage where promising young riders develop their skills and begin to build their global ranking. Once riders are at least 18 years of age, they are eligible to compete on the FWT Qualifier , with the best athletes qualifying for the FWT Challenger , together with the athletes who don’t make The Cut on the FWT. The talented few in each category will then reach the apex of the pyramid, the Freeride World Tour , to compete among the world’s best in this pro series.

Each of these competition series—Juniors, Qualifiers, Challengers and Pros—has its own ranking, but it’s only by winning the Freeride World Tour that a rider can be crowned world champion.

FWT QUALIFIER CALENDAR The FWT Qualifier calendar is packed with 1*, 2*, 3* and 4* events, which all count towards securing a spot on the Challenger series. However, the 4* category gives riders the greatest opportunity to stack up some serious points. Action will span across the globe, from Canada and the U.S. to Japan and Norway, with a variety of stops to look forward to. Here’s a look at the schedule of events…

Region 1 FWT Qualifier 4* Events

The North Face Frontier Qualifier (completed) New Zealand / August 30th - September 2nd, 2022

French Freeride Series La Rosière Qualifier France / January 10th - 12th, 2023

French Freeride Series Arc 1950 Freeride Week Qualifier France / January 18th - 20th, 2023

Engadinsnow by Dakine Qualifier Switzerland / January 26th - 29th, 2023

Toyo Tires Hakuba Qualifier Japan / February 7th - 10th, 2023

Open Faces Montafon Qualifier Austria / February 23rd - 26th, 2023

Region 2 FWT Qualifier 4* Events

Revelstoke IFSA Qualifier Canada / January 24th - 25th

Kicking Horse IFSA Qualifier Canada / February 13th - 17th

Crested Butte IFSA Qualifier Canada / February 28th - March 1st

Crystal Mountain IFSA Qualifier Canada / March 6th - 8th

junior freeride world tour 2023

FWT CHALLENGER CALENDAR Here, the competition really heats up, as riders coming from the FWT Qualifiers will face off not only against each other, but also against FWT athletes who miss The Cut after the third stop of the 2023 FWT in Ordino Arcalís, Andorra on February 4th - 9th.

There will be six FWT Challenger events—three in Europe and three in North America—that will determine who will find their name alongside the world’s best in 2024.

Region 1 FWT Challenger Events:

Nendaz Freeride Challenger Switzerland / March 4th - 8th

Jasna Adrenaline Challenger Slovakia / March 10th - 13th

Open Faces Gurgl Challenger Austria / March 17th - 22nd

Region 2 FWT Challenger Events:

Whistler IFSA Challenger Canada / March 12th - 14th

Taos IFSA Challenger USA / March 23rd - 25th

Snowbird IFSA Challenger USA / March 30th - 31st

junior freeride world tour 2023

THE NUMBERS 60 to 75 riders will take part in each region's FWT Challenger series Approximately 140 athletes worldwide will qualify for the FWT Challenger series, including around 20 riders who don’t make The Cut for the FWT Finals, as well as the top 40 to 60 riders from the FWT Qualifiers in each region after the final 4* events.

18 riders will qualify for the 2024 FWT Riders will take their two best results out of the three FWT Challenger events in each region, which will count towards their final ranking. The top four ski men, two ski women, two snowboard men and one snowboard woman from each region—18 riders in total—will qualify for the 2024 FWT for their shot at the crown.

The format is therefore the same as the previous year, but everything will fall under the FWT name to provide more clarity. The pyramid format allows all competitors, from young aspiring junior freeriders to FWT mainstays, to clearly see the path to the top, as well as keep an eye on the relentless supply of talent knocking at the door.

This season’s schedule features a wide range of events, providing athletes with copious opportunities across all formats in their pursuit of making the FWT. Stay tuned to the FWT social media channels ( @freerideworldtour ) and website ( freerideworldtour.com ) for updates regarding event locations and dates.

The drops, flips, and tricks done by these teenagers are unbelievable.

Jeremy Bernard Photography junior Freeride world tour

Skiers and snowboarders line up above daunting exposed cliffs and steep chutes. One by one they choose lines to ride, pushing their limits to score big air and big points from judges.

The Freeride Junior World Tour recently completed its fifth year with this year’s championships in Grandvalira, Andorra. Riders scored points based on the difficulty of the line, control, fluidity, jumps, and technique.

For this event, athletes pick exposed and steep lines with jumps and flair that demonstrate maturity and control beyond their age.

How Freeride Works

Freeriding courses do not feature any man-made obstacles or jumps but instead rely on natural cliffs, lips, and chutes. Each rider starts from the same point and chooses their own path down the mountain. The best run down wins.

Jeremy Bernard Photography junior Freeride world tour 1

Junior Freeride World Tour

The tour attracts 14- to 18-year-old athletes from Europe, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. Qualifying events are held around the world leading up to the championships.

While the championships may be over (it was held February 5 – 8), there are still Junior Freeride World tour events through the months of February and March.

The tour works to develop the talents of future freeride athletes and encourage youth participation in the extreme sport.

Think you (or your kids) have what it takes? Check out some videos of the best lines from past Junior events. The last video shows Ross Tester’s Championship-winning run from this year.

How Freeriding Is Judged

There are five categories  to judge each rider’s performance.

1) Difficulty of Line

Danger factor, creativity, linking passages, and imagination all go into judging the rider’s path down the mountain.

Falling (or not falling), confidence, and recovery are key factors.

3) Fluidity

Judges look for how well a rider completes their line from start to finish, without stopping. Transitioning poorly, or hesitating before cliffs impact the score.

This category makes freeriding exciting. Style, aggression, size, entrance, landing, and confidence in the air all influence the score.

5) Technique

Riders must execute their lines and moves, and do so more cleanly than their competitors. If a rider cuts speed and edges poorly, points will be deducted.

2023 Is Going to Be the Year of the Rookie Challenger on the Freeride World Tour

The fwt just released its 2023 athlete roster. here's who we have our eyes on..

This morning, the Freeride World Tour raised the stoke levels a notch by announcing their list of 2023 competitors. The roster comprises FWT veterans and exciting newcomers, all set to shake up the battle for the 2023 title.

This season’s athlete list, in particular, illustrates a multi-year shift in rider demographics on the Tour. For years, career Tour athletes who stuck around for five or even 10 years dominated the podium and start list. A few seasons back, this status quo began to shift thanks to a new cadre of ripping up-and-comers. If you peek at the 2023 roster, you’ll notice that many riders are either newcomers or recent additions to the Tour.

During this season’s upcoming FWT, we’ll have a chance to witness these skilled young guns turned pros give it all they’ve got on the world stage; but don’t expect the old guard to go down easy. Here are the returning vets and new additions we’re most excited to watch this coming season.

Reine Barkered

Category: Ski Men Status: Veteran Country: Sweden Age: 40

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Reine Barkered (@reinebarkered)

I know I just said that the future of freeride is with the youth, but you can’t talk about the FWT without mentioning Reine Barkered. The man’s got absurd longevity. The 40-year-old made his first appearance on the FWT in 2008 (that’s 14 years ago for those who don’t want to do the math). Since then, he’s snapped up multiple titles and top-five finishes. His legacy is already apparent—an enormous cliff on the Verbier FWT venue bears his name.

Barkered’s been on the FWT for more than a decade, giving him accumulated wisdom absent in younger riders. He’s intimately familiar with each venue and will bring a calculated yet explosive style to every competition face. Anticipate Barkered showing the young guns how it’s done on more than one occasion.

Category: Ski Men Status: Rookie Country: Austria Age: 20

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Max Hitzig▪️Skier (@maxhitzig)

In many ways, Max Hitzig is the polar opposite of Barkered. At 20 years old, Hitzig is half Barkered’s age. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Hitzig’s lack of experience presents a disadvantage, but you’d also be wrong. Hitzig combines the precision of a seasoned FWT rider with the tenacity of someone looking to make a name for himself.

On paper, Hitzig is a rookie as he’s never officially competed on the FWT. However, event organizers tossed him a wildcard slot last season for Fieberbrunn, an opportunity Hitzig took full advantage of by grabbing first place amidst a stacked field.

At Fieberbrunn, he displayed his complete suite of freeride talent: clean skiing, precise line selection, and a deep bag of tricks. While Hitzig doesn’t have a ton of experience under his belt (last season was his first time in the start gate), he’s already established himself as a contender for the FWT title.

Xander Guldman

Category: Ski Men Status: Rookie Country: U.S. Age: 24

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Xander Guldman (@xanderfire)

Xander Guldman followed a unique path to the FWT. As a junior, he competed on both the IFSA and JFT junior circuits, where he developed into an impressive freeride force known for technical lines and massive 360s. Then, after aging out of the juniors, he took a break from competing altogether.

Last season, on a whim, Guldman decided to throw his hat back in the ring, ultimately qualifying for the 2023 FWT. I’m thankful that Guldman opted to give the start gate another try, and as a viewer, I expect you’ll be, too. These days, the American is one part mountain goat and one part acrobat, peppering consequential terrain with quick tricks, making him uniquely prepared to find success on the FWT. Check out this video from last season, and you’ll know what I mean.

Manon Loschi

Category: Ski Women Status: Rookie Country: France Age: 20

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manon Loschi (@manon_loschi)

Manon Loschi proves that the women’s start list, like the men’s start list, is set to be rocked by a crew of newcomers. At 20 years old, Loschi’s already grabbed the attention of industry titans like K2 and Peak Performance. These sponsorships are well deserved, as evidenced by her equally fluid and aggressive style, which includes tweaked shiftys, smooth nose butters, and stomped backflips. As a fan of the FWT, I’ve long waited for the presence of riders who can mix old-school freeride know-how with new-school stunts. Loschi fits this bill and then some—stay tuned for aerial wizardry from the French rider.

Jess Hotter

Category: Ski Women Status: Veteran Country: New Zealand Age: 29

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jess Hotter (@jesshotterski)

Jess Hotter had a banner season last year, grabbing two first-place finishes, a second-place finish, and the overall title. Hotter’s success as a rookie during the 2022 FWT likely came as no surprise to those in the know. She cut her teeth on the qualifying circuit for years, and she’s from New Zealand, a country known for producing top-tier freeriders.

Hotter’s excellent line selection skills, impressive technique, and her hard-won experience last season means she everything she needs to defend her title this season. If her Instagram is any indication, Hotter intends to augment her extensive freeride skills with some tricks of her own, clearly taking advantage of that southern hemisphere winter to dial in an array of stunts.

Sybille Blanjean

Category: Ski Women Status: Rookie Country: Switzerland Age: 22

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Freeride World Tour (@freerideworldtour)

Sybille Blanjean, like Manon Loschi, spent little time in the qualifiers. In 2018, she graduated from the junior circuit before spending a short three years on the FWQ. Starting last season, she was officially part of the big leagues. Many riders spend over five years on the FWQ before fighting their way onto the Tour. Not Blanjean.

Blanjean’s rookie season on the FWT was promising. She held her own throughout, stacking solid middle-of-the-pack runs, which led to her clinching a spot in the finals. However, things kicked into a different gear in Verbier, Switzerland, with Blanjean putting down a winning run in puckering steep terrain—a poetic conclusion to the season for the Swiss skier and an indicator that Blanjean’s ready to take a crack at the overall title in 2023.

Amidst this excitement of fresh faces and new challengers, you may notice that a few fan favorites won’t be returning. On the women’s side, Hedvig Wessel has opted to step away from the FWT this upcoming season to focus on personal projects. While her backflips will be sorely missed, the FWT reports that she may return for a one-off as a wildcard at one of this seasons events. On the men’s side, big sender Aymar Navarro unfortunately won’t appear in the start gate in 2023, unless he’s offered a wildcard.

We’re about three months from the FWT’s kick-off in 2023, which will be broadcast free on Youtube and the official FWT website . Stay tuned to SKI’s Competitions channel for more coverage as we inch closer to the first drop of the season.

Vail skiers take home season titles at Junior Freeride Championships at Breckenridge

Fletcher taylor finished third to lock up the u15 overall season ski crown and kate pitkin claimed the u19 silver.

junior freeride world tour 2023

The Ski and Snowboard Club Vail freeride ski team concluded a successful 2023-24 season at the International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association (IFSA) Junior Freeride Championships held at Breckenridge Ski Resort earlier this month. The precursor to the Freeride World Tour, the IFSA Junior Freeride Championships featured over 350 of the best North and South American riders across U12, U15 and U19 divisions.

SSCV’s Katie Pitkin earned a U19 silver medal and Fletcher Taylor took the U15 boys bronze as all five SSCV skiers made the April 13 final held on Peak 6’s Sixth Senses area. Taylor also captured the U15 overall season crown.

“Fletcher had a great season,” coach Matt Luczkow said. “He came out this year and made the winning look pretty easy.”

Taylor opened his campaign with three-straight wins at Copper Mountain, Crested Butte and Snowbird en route to becoming the second SSCV skier Luczkow has coached to a season title after Finn Griffith won the U19 category last season.

Taylor was ranked second in the standings behind Whistler Freeride Club’s Carter Durlacher coming into Breckenridge. But Durlacher fell on his second run and only managed a seventh-place finish, opening the door for Taylor to accomplish his season-long goal.

“I think he really wanted that top spot,” Luczkow said, adding that Taylor made his biggest off-season gains in the gym and through more serious dry-land training.

“I really noticed before winter started that he was working hard in the weight room and (he) went into the season really strong,” the coach continued. “He’s very athletic, very talented … and he really loves skiing.”

SSCV results

  • Fletcher Taylor – third
  • Levi Flach – 17th
  • Kate Pitkin – second
  • Ingrid Gerdes – sixth
  • Andrew Forestl – 10th

IFSA Final season standings

  • Fletcher Taylor – first
  • Levi Flach – 16th
  • Andrew Forstl – 13th
  • Ingrid Gerdes – fourth
  • Kate Pitkin – 10th

Even though Pitkin flashed signs of her potential this season — finishing first at the Copper Mountain Junior 2 (regional) event and second at the Snowbird Junior 3 (national) competition — her silver came as a bit of surprise, Luczkow said.

“I think she proved in the championship event that she’s one of the top skiers,” he said.

junior freeride world tour 2023

Ingrid Gerdes joined Pitkin in the top 10. Gerdes placed sixth, wrapping up a season in which she also earned a Freeride World Tour Junior Worlds spot via her fourth-place season standings finish. Luczkow said Gerdes has taken massive strides in her second season with SSCV.

“She’s gotten a lot better,” Luczkow said of the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy student, who went right from the championship event to perform in a figure skating show at Dobson Ice Arena later that evening.

“She’s a go-getter,” the coach continued. “She’s really progressed and competed smart and consistently and that’s led her here. She’s also very friendly and a great ambassador for our team.”

Gerdes joins Finn Griffith and Jenna Myers as the only SSCV freeride skiers to compete at the FWT Junior World Championships. SSCV snowboarder Finn Eisenman earned a Junior Worlds silver in Austria this January.

Considering the caliber of the field competing in Breckenridge two weeks ago — only the top 60 U15 boys (out of 934 on the IFSA season standings) even made the IFSA Junior Freeride Championships cut — Luczkow was proud to see all of his athletes advance to finals at the championships. Drew Forestl finished 10th in the U19 boys division and Levi Flach was 17th for U15 boys.

“The team did great,” he said. “All of them have a lot of potential with their skiing and a lot of passion for it. And they’re a good crew — they enjoy hanging out.”

When Luczkow started SSCV’s full-time freeride program five years ago, he had six athletes and was the only coach. Currently, he and multiple assistants guide roughly 40 full-time athletes as well another 40-50 weekend team and rookie development skiers.

“The program continues to grow, especially on the full-time side,” he said. “What we’re seeing with these competitions is the level of skiing is very high, where you do have to be quite dedicated. It almost takes being a full-time athlete to really be competitive now, where that probably wasn’t the case 5-10 years ago.”

The  New Zealand    Junior Freeride Tour presented by The North Face

junior freeride world tour 2023

The 2023 season will be the 9th year of the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour!

We are very proud to announce The North Face presents the New Zealand Freeride Tour. The NZJFT is extremely proud to have The North Face as the title sponsor again for 2023, they have been a backbone of the NZ freeride scene for generations and to have them supporting our junior events is a honor.

The NZJFT is going to be a 3 stop tour this year, providing our young freeriders a chance to compete in a Junior Freeride Tour event.

We are proudly supported by the resorts - Treble Cone, Remarkables & Mt Olympus.

Its the small guys that always carry the load & the NZJFT is blessed by the support of NZ SnowSports, Volkl skis, Jonel Hydraulics, Bridgens Construction, Be Effect Brewery, & AJ Hackett.

Without them we wouldn't be able to run a tour for all you frothing freeriders so a big thanks!

This tour has been set up to provide our junior and adult athletes with the opportunity to compete in professionally run freeride competitions. Our focus is on fun, participation and safety along with promoting the incredible sport that is freeriding.

We are proud to be sanctioned by the prestigious Freeride World Tour (FWT) and are delighted to be running a tour of three events in one season!

Stop #1 - Treble Cone - 18th - 20th August. (18th, Inspection day/ possible competition day, 19th, competition day, 19th weather day Sunday)

Stop #2 - Remarkables - 25th - 27th August. (25th unofficial inspection, 26th competition day, 27th weather day)

Stop #3 Mt Olympus - 15th - 17th September (weather window Friday - Sunday. Competition will be the best weather day)

Ski and snowboard

Male and female

Age Categories

14 - 17 years

Under 16 Ski Men

Under 14 (all categories)

Under 10 (depending on demand)

The athletes with the most points in each category after the completion of the tour will be crowned the Overall NZJFT champions.

As past years the NZJFT will again award invitations to the 2019 JFT World Championship to the stand out skiers and boarders in the 14 – 17 age category (potential for both boys and girls). In past years we have selected a team based off results and personal performace on the NZJFT. The teams have backed up their performances on the NZJFT at the Junior World Championships and have showed NZ is a nation to be reckoned with. In five years NZ has had 4 overall European champion titles claimed by kiwis.
