Did you know that there are best colors to wear on safari? Before we heading off on our safari vacation in South Africa and Uganda I had no idea how or indeed why the color of clothes your wear on a safari is important but it really is. In this guide we will tell you the worst and best colors to wear on safari and why you should stick to a restricted color palette whether you are going on a safari in Tanzania, South africa or indeed anywhere in Africa.

Why Does the Color of Safari Clothes Matter?

The truth is that color is a really important factor when putting together your safari capsule wardrobe. But why does the color of safari clothes matter?

Blending in With your surroundings

The point of being on safari is seeing the amazing wildlife. If you are wearing neon clothes you will definitely stand out from your bush surroundings.

If you want to see more animals we recommend wearing colors that will help you blend in to the surroundings.

This is important no matter whether you are doing a safari by car, by boat but especially important if you are doing a walking safari.

Keeping clean

It shouldn’t come as a shock that going on a safari isn’t a sterile experience. Chances are you will get dusty and dirty even doing a safari in a car but certainly if you are doing a walking safari.

So you don’t look filthy in your photographs you want to be wearing colors that will not show the dirt so much.

So now you know why it is important to wear and not to wear certain colors on safari we will look in more detail color by color to help you when packing

Packing a Capsule Wardrobe

Keeping to this limited color palette will also help you create and stick to a safari capsule wardrobe which will help you pack light which is an essential for those who are using light aircraft to get to their safari lodges.

In our opinion the best colors to wear on a safari are:

The reason we recommend these colors over all others is that these are the colors that will help you blend in most with the African landscape be that forests, savannahs or plains.

By blending in you will have a much better chance of seeing wildlife and not drawing attention to yourself in a negative way.

Also we found Khaki shirts the best for not showing up dust while tan, beige and brown were the best in our opinion for hiding the mud when doing gorilla trekking and other muddy activities.

What Colors Not to Wear on Safari

We recommend adding the colors below to your what not to wear on safari list. While it is probably more important for those on walking safaris to adhere to this most strictly we recommend following it whether you are in a car, on foot or on a boat. This is especially important when relating to health and safety.

Blue and Black

Blue and Black tend to be go to in my wardrobes, particularly in my outdoors wardrobes however in my opinion these are the colors that you should most avoid on safari.

This isn’t because they will make you stand up or show up dirt but for a very serious health and safety reason.

Africa unfortunately is home to the Tsete Fly. They are particularly abundant in East and Central Africa and we did see them when we were on safari in Uganda. Tsete Flies are known to cause Sleeping Sickness which is a horrible disease and you should try at all costs to prevent getting bitten by a Tsete Fly to avoid this.

Tsete Flies are attracted to two colors above any other. And you guessed it those colors are Blue and Black. although this is especially important when visiting Central and Eastern Africa I would follow this advice wherever you are going on safari just in case.

Can you Wear White on Safari?

We often get asked whether you can wear white on safari. I think most people have a romantic notion of what a safari wardrobe looks like from watching films and movies where women wear pristine white linen tops while out in the bush and savannah.

However this really isn’t a good or practical idea. Out of all the colors you could wear on a safari white is the color that will make you stand out the most. Also white will absolutely show up dust and dirt more than any other color.

If you have to have a white linen shirt in your safari wardrobe I would personally recommend you wearing this just for dinner in your lodge rather than out on safari drives and walks.

Can you wear bright colors on safari?

It is not recommend that you wear bright colors on safari. Neutral colors, such as tans and khakis are a much better choice. Bright colors will make you stand out which could prevent animals coming out or even attract some that you don’t want to be too interested in you especially on the walking safaris.

We therefore leaving bright colors out of your safari capsule wardrobes.

Is grey ok to wear on safari?

Grey is not the worst color to wear on safari however I would definitely prefer to keep khakis and neutral tones in your wardrobe instead.

Can I wear pink on a safari?

Pink is not as bad as white, blue or black on safari and it doesn’t attract anything in particularly depending on the shade but I personally would still not add pink to my safari wardrobe.

Light pink, similar to white will show up all the dirt and dust and won’t look great in pictures and darker or brighter pinks will make you stand out too much.

Can you wear red on a safari?

Red is not known to attract Tsete Flies however red will make you very conspicuous to the animals and therefore isn’t a recommended color to wear on safari.

Can I wear orange on safari?

Orange no matter the shade is considered a bright color and as such is not recommended to wear on safari. Not only because it will make you stand out to animals but also because insects love orange and you really don’t want to attract more insects towards you on a safari.

Can you wear Camo on Safari?

Although Khaki is a great color for safari you should NEVER wear khaki on a safari. This isn’t anything to do with the Animals but in Africa came or camouflage is almost exclusively used by soldiers and the army. And in fact it is in some places illegal to wear camouflage if you aren’t in the army.

Therefore we recommend leaving anything came behind.

Is it OK to wear black on safari?

No black is a color that you shouldn’t wear on safari. As we mentioned above black attracts Tsete Flies and therefore should be avoided at all costs.

Thanks for pointing this out Bob and I will get this edited. Camo i.e. military camouflage isn't great on safaris as depending on the country you are in it is illegal to wear camouflage outside of the military.

Choose a wall without doors or windows to be the focal point of the room.  Consider painting it a darker shade than the others to add depth and draw the eye.  Then fill the space with an African mask or mask collection, paintings depicting rural life, or wood-framed mirrors.  For a softer texture on your accent wall, try hanging up an authentic kente cloth or batik wall hanging.  Accent walls are endlessly versatile, so it’s up to you and your preferences.

4. Feature indigenous animals

It is a safari theme, after all! A well-placed animal sculpture or two is an elegant way to pay tribute both to Africa’s extraordinary wildlife and its amazing artisans. If you’re using animal prints in your furniture or textiles, though, stick to one pattern and don’t overdo it — nothing makes a room feel more dizzying and look more gaudy than multiple animal prints stacked up next to each other.

5. Practice restraint

Speaking of not overdoing it, the key to pulling off the safari look without making your home feel like a noisy zoo is restraint.   For example, room composition in Africa is typically kept minimal to allow air to circulate in the humid climate, so don’t overcrowd the furniture.  Similarly, don’t go overboard with accessories, and be sure to balance your accent items throughout the space. Finally, balance patterns and solids to create a room that breathes and feels uncluttered.

6. Feature tribal art as accents

Scattering a few well-chosen pieces of authentic tribal art in a room is the perfect way to tie your African theme together. Drums, for example, are renowned throughout African society and make very interesting conversation pieces. Leave a small drum at the end of the couch or by a few plants, or even create a unique end table from a larger one! African woven baskets, meanwhile, can be used for wall ornaments, magazine holders, or fruit baskets.

What to Wear on an African Safari

When I was shopping for my South Africa trip , I had no idea where to start. What does one wear on a safari? After some research, I found lots of articles that recommended long sleeves, pants, and a hat. I knew I wanted to wear a hat, but I wasn’t convinced long sleeves and pants were necessary in the 90-degree heat. So instead of packing my lululemons and nikes, I went shopping.

To me, half the fun of traveling is the outfits I get to wear. I love dressing the part and this trip was no exception. I knew it was going to be hot, so instead of covering up head to toe, I made sure to bring bug spray and SPF. Dulini provided that for us as well, which was awesome! Anyway, I wanted shorts and short sleeves since a dress wouldn’t really make sense for a bumpy ride in a Land Rover. I wanted to be outdoorsy, but stylish. And I have to say, I think I nailed it!

What to Wear on an African Safari Trip

The color palette for this trip was all neutrals and earth tones. I wore lots of tan, white, army green, and ivory. Since most safari experiences are upscale, and I was staying at a luxury resort , I wanted to have a clean, upscale, and modern vibe to my looks.

The first safari outfit I wore was this white short-sleeved button-down shirt and high waisted cotton shorts with an adorable little tie at the waist. I have to say, it is definitely a good idea to wear a hat on a safari. I had to hold mine down most of the time, but the sun is strong and it helped out so much. Speaking of the sun, another absolutely essential for a safari is sunglasses. The sun is very bright both in the morning and in the afternoon, so it’s important to not only protect your eyes from the sun, but also from all the sand and branches that inevitably hit you while driving through the bush.

Another important item to consider when shopping and packing for a safari is the shoes. While there isn’t a lot of walking involved, you do want shoes that are comfortable. It is important to wear closed-toe shoes as there are lots of bugs and once again, sand and branches, in the bush. I wore my Rothy’s the entire time. They were perfect for walking around in Cape Town and for wearing on safari! I did bring one pair of heeled booties. I wore them on the short flight to and from the bush, but didn’t wear them during the actual safari, so heels are definitely not necessary, even for dinner. For dinner, I wore light, flowy dresses, airy palazzo pants, and casual tops.

When it comes to accessories, I think it’s fun to incorporate just a touch of animal print. So whether it’s a headband, tortoiseshell sunglasses, or a lightweight scarf, it’s always nice to tie in a little bit of the wildlife. I also like to wear gold accents as opposed to silver. I just think it looks better with the earth tones!

One day I went with a romper. While it was super comfy and breezy, going to the bathroom in the bush was not fun. Don’t make the same mistake I did – ha! Since there is a bit of downtime on a safari getaway, I would recommend also bringing plenty of comfy clothes for lounging around your room or the lodge grounds. You don’t really need things like jeans on a safari. Think chic, outdoorsy resort wear. And of course, always bring a bathing suit! We had our own little private pool in addition to the lodge pool, so a bathing suit is definitely a must. I really felt like I had everything I needed on this trip, and definitely did not regret not bringing pants and long sleeves! Ryan also wore short sleeves and shorts and was totally fine.

WHAT COLOURS SHOULDN'T YOU WEAR ON SAFARI?

Blue and black Black and blue stand out in the bush, but there is another reason to avoid wearing these colours on safari. If you are travelling to an area with tsetse flies, this attracts the dreaded fly – an insect with a painful bite – so much so that fly traps are made from blue and black fabric.

Nine tips to prepare for a memorable experience

After many decades of thinking about it, I decided this is the time to go on African Safari. Now in my 80s, if not now, when?

For me, preparing for an adventure has always been a quintessential part of the experience of travel. The further out the trip is, the more time I have to research, purchase, and plan! 

The options seemed endless, but these three things persuaded me to choose OAT (Overseas Adventure Travels ): their space for single travelers with no single supplement, their limit of 16 people per tour, and a photo book of pictures by some neighbors who took the same tour 2 years ago. Their photos looked like a National Geographic layout, and tales of their experiences made me sign up immediately.

1. Do a thorough investigation of the climate

I am going in early August, which is still winter in Africa but approaching spring. Thankfully, it is not the rainy season. But the weather requires preparation.

This becomes important as I will be staying for 12 days in tented camps, called “rustic but comfortable” in the brochure. There will be no heating in these tents nor air conditioning, though they have a shower and toilet en suite.  

Being a thin-skinned desert dweller (I live in Las Vegas) who thinks anything below 75 degrees is “chilly,” I want to be sure I can handle the overnight temperatures for sleeping and the chill of early morning and early evening game drives.

Weather is easy to research. Online, I enter locations (not just the country, but specific regions) and see past highs and lows and averages. As I start my journey out of Johannesburg at the beginning of August and spend my first night in a tent in Botswana, the temperature may go as low as 42. Yes, definitely chilly! I am told we may be given a hot water bottle, something I remember well from my youth in cold England, but I may need more!

I will take some Thermacare heat wraps , which I have used in my past career doing night shoots as a TV and film costume designer. I have found them to last many hours. I have also purchased a battery-heated vest, probably meant for skiers and hikers but also suitable for a thin-blooded octogenarian.

Our tour material advises lots of layering. We go from a 6 am start of a game drive to the sun coming out and warming us during the three-hour morning excursion. A warm, insulated jacket and a wool or fleece sweater are needed. Add a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf for those early mornings. Pants that can roll up into capris are a good idea. Long-sleeved shirts in a heavy fabric work for cool nights. 

2. Select safari-appropriate colors

But there is something else that needs to be considered: the color palette. Neutral earth tones (browns, tans, greys, or greens) are best to help us blend into the background, and we must avoid white because it attracts attention.

Blue or black clothing is to be avoided as it attracts tsetse flies. And in Zimbabwe, camouflage patterns in clothing are actually illegal. 

I stocked up on t-shirts at the Banana Republic and bought a couple of these Sun Protection, Quick-dry safari shirts on Amazon .

Good walking shoes are essential. Any pair of sturdy closed-toe shoes will suffice, and  be sure to break them in before you go!  I will bring one pair of more casual shoes for daytime activities around the pool. Perhaps one more – a girl has to have shoes!

I’m packing a swimsuit as the camps and hotels have pools.

Our luggage allowance will be minimal. We can only take an OAT-provided soft duffle bag that will fit in the various small bush planes that will take us from place to place. The duffle bag and carry-on must weigh no more than 44lbs. combined.

3. allow for physical comfort.

Our tour brochures are very clear that many roads are dusty and bumpy and to be prepared for that. I have a blow-up cushion that I take on airplanes that I will pack and possibly a back brace to support my scoliotic spine.

Here is a pillow that I like . It is easy to blow up and pack back up into an attached stuffer bag.

4. Practice photography in advance

Practice practice practice. I urge the amateur photographer to be up to speed on whatever photography equipment they will use, as those precious sightings of a lion or tiger on the prowl can be gone in a flash.

Recently I purchased a mid-level Nikon Coolpix camera . I know I will need a good zoom lens and the ability to shoot in low-light. I need plenty of pre-trip time to study how this camera works, so I am not fiddling with settings while an exotic beast walks right past me! My sister practices focusing videos trained on a passing car as a stand-in for a charging animal! I also will have my iPhone 13 Pro , which I purchased a year ago, knowing that its camera abilities were quite advanced. 

Don’t forget memory cards , batteries, etc. A general-purpose binocular with an aperture of 8×40 or 8×42 is excellent. Other things to go on your list: a waterproof/dust-proof bag /cover for your camera; good quality sunglasses ; moisturizer ; sunblock , and a refillable water bottle . (No one-use plastic is allowed).

5. Bring charging equipment and batteries

Nowadays, we are all so dependent on being able to recharge our many devices and to have wifi access at all times. This will not be the case in the heart of the national parks in Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. I am telling my family and close friends that they may not hear from me for days at a time. 

The tent camps I am staying in will have a period in the evening where generators are on, and we can recharge our devices. However, I am investing in a portable solar charger that I can carry on my backpack or attach to our jeep, which may give me a small added charging ability.

Also, don’t forget your power converter . There are 3 different plugs for the 3 countries I am visiting. 

Essential for camping is a good flashlight, and Journeywoman highly recommends this headlamp . I have bought one. I find it powerful and easy to use, leaving hands free.

Observing wildlife from a distance 

6. Anticipate….uh…bathrooms in the bush  (or behind it.)

I am told that “behind the green door” is the expression for the bathroom while out on a game drive! It refers to a nice thick bush. Taking a hygiene kit and an appliance for these needs is a good idea and can be found on Amazon here (they are called Portable Female Urination Devices).

7. Practice mindfulness by journaling

On most trips, I take my laptop and write like crazy at the end of every day or dictate into my iPhone and email myself. Since battery life is of the utmost importance, and wifi will be little or none, I will be writing by hand.

Take a notebook and several pens, and perhaps invest in The African Safari Journal and Field Guide . It is the perfect book to take because it is a wildlife guide, trip organizer, phrasebook, safari diary, map directory, and wildlife checklist, all in one!   Get a copy here (in Canada) and here (in the US).

8. Bring practical gifts for children

Friends who have previously taken this tour say t-shirts and clothing are very welcome gifts (even used!) with the local vendors and can be used as barter for their crafts. Also, schoolchildren need pencils, paper, and other school supplies, so if you have room for a few of those, do include them.

9. Read your tour company’s travel planner

My last and most crucial Tip:  Read your tour company’s Travel Planner thoroughly! Mine from OAT is 108 pages long. It outlines the passport and visa requirements clearly, essential medications you should have in addition to your regular prescriptions. They discuss the lack of working ATMs and the need for cash. There is very little that they don’t cover, though there is no mention of “Behind the Green Door!”

Jun 19 How to Design a Safari Theme Nursery

I often get asked by my customers “How do you design a Safari theme nursery?” This isn’t an easy question to answer because quite frankly there is just so much bad “art” out there and so many ways a safari theme nursery can go wrong. Given that the Safari nursery is in such hot demand, it’s time Chub & Bug answered this question. 

In this post, we not only explain why choosing a Safari theme is a great idea for your nursery, but also provide insight on how to design the perfect Safari theme nursery by showing which animals to include in this type of theme, recommending three styles to design your nursery in, and then providing 10 recommendations for Safari theme nursery furniture, decor, and accessories to help you design a nursery that will help your little one prepare for life’s grand adventure.

Why Choose a Safari Theme for your Nursery?

There are many great reasons to choose Safari as the theme for your little one’s nursery. 

The first reason to choose it is that the very idea of Safari connotes “adventure,” and it’s always a good idea to imbue your child with the sense that life is a big adventure, albeit with some risk. The definition of “safari” is an “expedition to observe animals in their natural habitat.” So safari is really setting out on a great big adventure to learn about the world and those beings who live in it. I can’t think of a better mission for your child in their life.

What Animals Do I Include in a Safari Theme Nursery?

To do a Safari theme nursery right, you need to start with the right animals. 

The most common animals used in a Safari theme room are the core four and you can’t really create a Safari theme nursery if one of these animals is missing:

Gorillas, monkeys, cheetahs, hippos, and rhinos are often included when more animals are used or as alternates for the primary four.. Sometimes hyenas round off the pack :) 

While some designers do use adult animals in the Safari nursery, it’s best to use baby animals for your baby room! Babies love to look at babies like themselves and there is nothing cuter than a baby elephant or zebra! These baby animals will provide your child with companionship, which will help to comfort them when they’re alone and start them off with a deep respect for animals and their natural habitats.

What Are Common Styles for a Safari Theme Nursery? 

Contrary to popular belief, your Safari baby room doesn’t have to look like a cliche with bright colors and obnoxious patterns. The unique pelts indigenous to animals in Africa can be brought into play, with the right design scheme. 

Modern Neutral Style 

The good news is that the Safari nursery theme works beautifully with a modern neutral color scheme and minimalist design principles.

The basic or typical Safari color palette includes, kelly green, jungle green, yellow, orange,  sienna, and brown.

However, the typical Safari color palette is often overwhelming and unsophisticated. It’s also just so overdone. Instead, at Chub & Bug, we like to think of new and intriguing ways to bring old themes and ideas to life.

Neutral Safari Theme Color Palette

The above color palette shows how gray and light beige can be paired with highly saturated greens and browns to produce a neutral, subtle and sophisticated look. 

Here is an example of a neutral color scheme using pale bege, gray and saturated greens and browns to convey an ultra chic minimalist look. And what’s even better is that these neutral tones also create a unisex or gender neutral look and feel.

What I love about this palette is that it is masculine but also provides just enough charm and warmth for little boys. The gray in this palette tones down the warm hues, creating a perfect harmonic balance.

And finally we have this wonderfully masculine, yet still playful Safari palette that leverages two saturated blues, which is again perfect for baby boys rooms.

Girl’s Safari Nursery Palette

Many customers ask me about how to develop a Safari theme nursery for little girls. My advice is to always go with neutral and saturated colors and provide a pop of a feminine color. 

This palette leverages a pale green and very subtle pink, which achieves a realistic look of the African landscape, but also feminizes it.

Better yet, this palette is a bit bolder and pairs complementary colors, saturated yellow and purple, to sound a perfect note. The pop of purple instantly feminizes it without taking us out of Africa so to speak. The black brilliantly reminds us of a zebra pelt, without all the melodrama ;)
